00:00 Every year Americans fan up for $20 billion
00:03 to look like they did 20 years ago.
00:04 But there are secrets the beauty industry
00:06 does not want you to know about
00:08 the anti-aging products that you buy every day.
00:10 Lisa Lee Freeman is helping us.
00:11 She's been doing independent testing
00:12 and investigating these products.
00:13 She's the editor-in-chief of Shop Smart Magazine.
00:16 So why doesn't the beauty industry
00:17 want us to know about these secrets?
00:18 Because they want you to keep buying and trying
00:20 all of these hundreds of products
00:22 that they develop and sell every year.
00:25 But the truth is, is that they don't give you
00:27 the dramatic results.
00:29 If they gave you dramatic results
00:30 and actually changed the structure of your skin,
00:32 they'd be drugs.
00:33 They'd be regulated as drugs.
00:35 They'd be prescriptions.
00:36 But you can get some results.
00:39 And our tests have shown over the years
00:40 you don't have to pay a lot to get results.
00:43 That message appealed to me a lot.
00:44 If you can get some of the benefits you desire
00:45 for a lot less money, then that's real value.
00:47 So the first secret we're gonna talk about
00:49 are the under-eye circle erasers.
00:50 The hundreds of these are out in the market right now.
00:53 I've got a little image.
00:54 Who's tried some of these, by the way?
00:56 These under-eye circle erasers?
00:57 Everybody.
00:58 They're all putting their hands up like this
00:59 so sheepishly.
01:00 (audience laughing)
01:01 Here's the secret.
01:03 The best tested circle erasers contain caffeine.
01:06 Caffeine, they have to have that.
01:08 Now why is that so important?
01:09 Well, first I just wanna say that most under-eye circles
01:12 are due to genetics or allergies,
01:13 and that's very difficult to treat.
01:16 However, if you do get a product with caffeine in it,
01:18 you have a chance at making a slight difference.
01:21 For example, those bags under your eyes,
01:24 caffeine will help--
01:25 These bags.
01:26 Yeah, see that? What is those bags on your eyes?
01:28 They help reduce water retention,
01:30 so that actually helps smooth your skin,
01:33 and it also helps restrict the blood vessels in your eyes,
01:35 which reduces that dark look under your eyes.
01:38 So one product that has caffeine in it
01:40 is this particular product from MAC.
01:42 It's $30.
01:43 But really what you just wanna do is look for a product
01:45 that advertises caffeine in it.
01:47 Look at ingredient labels.
01:48 You can go online and find that out.
01:50 And these are relatively affordable?
01:52 Yeah, like I said, this is 30,
01:53 but if your dark circles don't go away,
01:55 you should go see a dermatologist
01:57 and find out if there are prescription creams
01:59 that might be worth trying,
02:00 or laser treatments, or even dermal fillers might help you.
02:04 Very fresh.
02:05 If it's not working for you, it's not wasting your money.
02:06 The second secret is about anti-wrinkle creams.
02:08 Now, ShopSmart spent 12 weeks comparing different creams,
02:11 and here's a video of some of the extensive testing
02:13 that you did.
02:14 And if you can, walk me through what you found.
02:16 Well, we had 80 subjects,
02:18 and we tested these creams for 12 weeks,
02:19 which is about the timeframe
02:21 that the advertisements say they're gonna work.
02:23 And what we found is we tested creams
02:25 from $8, and in the past,
02:27 we've tested creams as much as $400.
02:30 And what we found is spending more
02:32 doesn't necessarily get you better results.
02:34 This $16 cream from Garnier
02:36 was our top-tested cream in our last test,
02:39 but you might get good results
02:40 in terms of it plumps up the skin,
02:42 it's gonna make those fine lines less noticeable.
02:45 Well, in the studies you did,
02:46 did the women actually perceive differences?
02:48 Yes, absolutely.
02:49 But only about half of them.
02:51 I gotta say, if half the women are happy with a $16 cream,
02:53 I think you're probably worth trying.
02:55 Okay, the next secret is about cleansers
02:57 with acids, peptides, and vitamins.
02:59 Now, what's the secret here?
03:01 Do these things really work?
03:02 Well, you know, cleansers are only on your skin
03:04 for like 30 seconds,
03:06 so whatever is in those cleansers
03:09 isn't going to really penetrate or make a difference.
03:11 So if you're gonna spend money,
03:12 don't spend it on a cleanser.
03:13 Put that money into a good moisturizer
03:15 with those ingredients.
03:17 But one thing that you should think about
03:19 is getting a cleanser that is right for your skin.
03:23 For example, if you have dry skin,
03:24 you don't wanna get a cleanser with harsh ingredients
03:27 that might actually irritate your skin.
03:28 By the way, this is a cleanser that did well in our test.
03:32 These Olay cleansing cloths, they're only $7,
03:34 and they did just as well as products
03:36 that were a lot more expensive in our tests.
03:38 I counted these up, I got 33 of these in a box.
03:40 Is that right?
03:41 Yep, exactly.
03:41 Not bad.
03:42 I think I'm home with you.
03:43 Not bad at all.
03:44 Thank you.
03:45 And the next secret is about scar eliminators.
03:47 Who's tried scar eliminators?
03:49 About a third of the audience, probably.
03:52 So what's the secret about scar eliminators?
03:54 Well, they don't work, basically,
03:55 'cause you can't turn scar tissue back to regular skin.
03:59 That's the problem.
04:00 You might be able to get some redness reduced
04:02 by using these products,
04:04 but you're not gonna get a scar to turn back to regular skin.
04:06 Let me show you an animation to explain why
04:08 it's nearly impossible to reverse a scar
04:10 just with using one of these cosmetic products.
04:12 Let's say you're working in the kitchen
04:13 and you're cutting some onions,
04:15 and you've mistakenly made a little cut in your finger.
04:17 What really happens in there?
04:18 Well, as those skin edges come apart,
04:20 your body secretes fluids, white blood cells,
04:22 all these different elements come together
04:23 to provide a nutrient base in that scab
04:27 for collagen to grow.
04:28 Collagen is like ropes.
04:29 They wind around each other,
04:30 and as they grow through there,
04:31 they actually literally, like,
04:33 ropes pull together the skin.
04:34 It's tough stuff.
04:35 It changes color sometimes,
04:37 and gets slightly raised as well.
04:38 Doesn't have the right amount of melanin in it.
04:41 It can become this big, you know, unattractive element,
04:45 but you can't turn that back.
04:46 Thousands of years of evolution
04:48 just with a cosmetic cream.
04:49 So what do you recommend?
04:50 Talk to your dermatologist,
04:51 and find out about laser treatments,
04:53 or even plastic surgery that might be able to help you.
04:56 All right, you can go to DrOz.com
04:57 to find the recommendations from ShopSmart Magazine.
04:59 I'm saving the best for last,
05:01 my favorite anti-aging secret from the grocery store
05:03 that can help you look years younger.
05:05 What could it be?
05:06 Find out next.
