00:00 I recently came across a tweet that caught my attention.
00:03 Camila Cabello asked fellow pop star Ariana Grande
00:06 for advice about ponytail pain.
00:09 I'll quote her, "I just did a high ponytail
00:11 "for the first time and it's literally pulling on my brain.
00:14 "It's so painful, how do you do it?"
00:16 Ultimately, losing the ponytail all the way, by the way.
00:18 But Ariana's response was interesting.
00:20 She said, "She's actually in constant pain
00:22 "from her famous ponytail."
00:24 And now, Ariana Grande has cut off her famous ponytail
00:28 with people asking the question,
00:29 "Was it the pain?"
00:31 Today, I'm getting to the root of the problem
00:34 and revealing how you can avoid the pain
00:36 without ditching this really popular hairstyle.
00:38 Now, I admit, this is an area
00:40 I don't know that much about,
00:41 so I had to bring in an expert.
00:42 Kelsey Castagnon is here,
00:43 the senior beauty editor from PopSugar.
00:45 It's the number one digital lifestyle brand
00:48 for young women.
00:49 Congratulations on that, by the way.
00:50 So first, walking back, this is a guy.
00:51 If something could cause pain to my head, I wouldn't do it.
00:54 Yet, women are big into this high ponytail.
00:56 Why?
00:57 - It's easy.
00:58 It's a simple hairstyle.
00:59 You can just throw it up.
01:01 And also, it's trendy.
01:02 You can pull something in this slick, sky-high look.
01:07 And it's so popular that her hairstylist,
01:10 Ariana's hairstylist, has a name for it.
01:12 It's called Snatched Ponytail.
01:14 So what that means is you snatch your face,
01:16 you pull it up, it gives you this younger-looking effect,
01:19 and it just pulls up all your features.
01:21 - Pursuit of youth, even if you're in pain.
01:24 - Even if you're in pain.
01:25 - Come on over here.
01:26 I wanna know what was going on,
01:27 why it caused so much pain.
01:28 So I brought you a little model.
01:29 Here's Ariana's head, right?
01:31 And I wanna look to see whether it can really cause damage.
01:34 Hair follicles are there, right?
01:35 And hair follicles, these little things right here,
01:37 are small pockets of skin
01:38 that surround the root of your hair.
01:40 When your hair is pulled back into a high ponytail,
01:43 like Ariana's, it puts your hair in an unnatural tension,
01:46 right, an unnatural angle.
01:47 So it pulls those hair follicles in a weird way,
01:50 and those follicles have little nerve endings.
01:52 That tension causes pain.
01:55 And for Ariana, it could be even worse,
01:57 'cause her hair is so long and so thick, right,
01:59 that adds extra weight.
02:00 So over time, that tight hairstyle
02:02 can damage your follicles.
02:03 It could even lead, believe it or not, to hair loss,
02:07 which is really a big-time concern,
02:09 I know for a lot of you as well.
02:10 Maybe that's why she cut it off.
02:12 - Yeah, so the ponytail is not going away, obviously,
02:14 and really, it shouldn't be painful.
02:16 Your ponytail should not be painful.
02:17 So what you can do is grab a scrunchie.
02:21 They are back, but these, obviously,
02:23 as you can see, are silk.
02:25 So they're silk, and so it will hold your hair,
02:27 but it gives it a little bit of a slip.
02:29 So it's not gonna be too tough
02:31 and create that concentrated tension.
02:33 - You can still get that youthful look.
02:34 - You can get the younger-looking effect,
02:36 but not so pulled, you know, tight.
02:38 - You know, I see these all over the house.
02:39 I have no idea what they normally do.
02:41 (audience laughs)
02:41 I think the guys are like this.
02:42 - They could be sleeves, you know.
02:44 - Is this, yeah.
02:46 - They're very, very trendy right now.
02:47 And then you can also do-- - These candies?
02:49 - So they look like telephone cords, right?
02:51 Those are coil hair ties,
02:52 'cause the number one thing you wanna stay away from
02:54 is the elastic.
02:55 The elastic is the enemy for your hair.
02:58 So these evenly distribute your hair.
03:01 As you can see, the hair will go in these little coil areas,
03:05 and that way you don't have to deal
03:07 with so much pressure in one concentrated area.
03:09 - Kelsey, thanks for this sight-frame,
03:10 this enigmatic area for me. - Of course.
03:12 - Thank you for watching.
