00:00 From 44th Street in Camelback, this is the Arizona Daily Mix.
00:05 And it all starts right now.
00:08 Good morning and welcome to the Arizona Daily Mix. I'm Brad Perry.
00:17 And I'm Lexi Romano.
00:19 Today on the show, travel has become a top priority for many people.
00:23 And we're talking with a travel expert about black travel, which is becoming like a billion dollar industry with Travel World.
00:32 That's great. Love it. Yeah, very cool.
00:35 Plus, National Slapjack Day is tomorrow.
00:38 So we're headed out to Breakfast Kitchen Bar for some great flippin' fun.
00:44 I love Breakfast Kitchen Bar. Have you ever been to one of their locations?
00:47 No, where are they located?
00:48 So this is their new location, which is on Hayden, but they have another location up at Desert Ridge, which is the one that I've been to.
00:54 Alright, I gotta check it out. Let's really see what's going on there.
00:57 Because what's the best thing about them is their name doesn't lie.
01:01 They are the Breakfast Kitchen Bar, baby. They got some good espresso martinis.
01:07 Bloody Marys? Mimosas?
01:09 Probably. I haven't had one there, but they're espresso martinis.
01:13 I like it. Alright.
01:14 I can't wait to taste that because also in the show, I gotta put my spelling skills to the test because the Arizona Spelling Bee is happening in a couple of weeks.
01:24 And I'm gonna be testing my skills, as I just said, with some of the finals.
01:28 And there they are. Eighth grader and a fifth grader.
01:32 With her B, correct.
01:34 I'm done. That's gonna be, it's over with.
01:38 They're gonna beat you so hard, Brad.
01:40 They are. I've actually, when I was in elementary school, I...
01:44 Did you do a spelling bee?
01:46 We did a spelling bee.
01:47 Did you win?
01:48 I made it to... no.
01:50 Okay.
01:52 I did not make it. How about you? Did you ever do one?
01:54 You know, I never did. And if anyone in my family was watching, they're all in California, so I don't know that they are tuning in today,
02:00 but they would all laugh because I am a terrible speller.
02:03 Oh.
02:04 Terrible.
02:05 I can barely speak.
02:07 Oh, no, but it's gonna be great. And it's all about them, actually.
02:11 It's all about those cuties who are out there. They are the actual champions.
02:14 Well, actually, the spelling bee actually is how I found out I was dyslexic.
02:18 So it's kind of interesting.
02:19 Oh, okay. Well, there you go.
02:20 Yeah, that's how they found out that I was. So they started working with me.
02:22 There you go.
02:23 We'll see.
02:24 All right.
02:25 Let's do some trending. Brought to you by Gerber Injury Law, where we travel the Internet, the social media websites, our own backyard,
02:28 to give you something to talk about.
02:30 And we want to thank Gerber Injury Law for sponsoring this part of the Arizona Daily Mix.
02:34 And as we said, tomorrow is...
02:36 It's Flippin' Flapjack Day.
02:38 Flapjack Day. And so we were talking yesterday, flapjack pancakes, what is the difference?
02:43 So, yeah, so I didn't know. You didn't know.
02:45 We were both kind of talking about it, trying to figure it out.
02:47 I looked it up because I was like, "Wait, you know, I don't really know."
02:51 So, actually, I found an article online that I was reading that says the difference is not what they are, but where they are.
02:59 So in the U.S., flapjacks and pancakes are basically the same thing.
03:04 They're exactly the same, made the same. We just kind of call them two different things.
03:09 Pancakes or flapjacks, kind of the same.
03:11 But in the U.K., pancakes, their version of pancakes in the U.K., are actually very thin.
03:17 They're almost like a crepe, like a very thin, still kind of the flavor profile of a pancake, that same kind of thing.
03:24 But then when it comes to flapjacks, this is what's wild.
03:28 Flapjacks in the U.K. are actually almost like an oat bar.
03:34 Like a protein bar.
03:35 Yeah, so they call them oat squares or whatever.
03:39 So you would make them in a dish and cut them into squares.
03:43 But they're made with oats, they're made with honey, they're made with sugar.
03:46 Whereas here in the U.S. are pancakes and flapjacks, because they're basically the same, they're just your traditional,
03:51 they have the flour, the egg, whatever you put into it.
03:55 Throw the maple syrup on there, and there you go.
03:58 Because we were saying, we thought flapjack was because what you added into it.
04:02 I think some people were saying protein is what makes a flapjack,
04:05 and a pancake is just like with water, put butter, milk, or something like that to make flapjacks.
04:10 No, so according to this article, again, I could be wrong, but according to this article,
04:15 pancakes can be anything. You can put anything on them, in them.
04:18 You can have sweet pancakes, savory pancakes.
04:21 I've never had savory pancakes.
04:23 Have you ever had savory pan--
04:24 What's a savory pancake?
04:25 They were saying like the toppings on a pancake that you can make it savory.
04:28 You could put cheese or chicken or bacon.
04:31 Okay, yes. I've had chicken and pancakes.
04:33 I've had chicken and waffles.
04:34 Oh, okay, I guess I have two.
04:35 I guess I have two, because I didn't think of chicken and waffles.
04:37 Right.
04:38 But yeah, chicken and pancakes.
04:39 Same thing.
04:40 Okay, okay.
04:41 All right, that's it there.
04:42 You're right, you're right.
04:43 Would fruit be the savory, or was it more like--
04:45 No, so that would be the sweet.
04:46 So the way that we traditionally eat pancakes would be some strawberries
04:50 or some berries of some kind on top with some maple syrup,
04:53 maybe some powdered sugar, and then a savory version.
04:55 Is anything savory on top?
04:57 And then, yep, in the UK, totally different.
04:59 They are a completely different thing.
05:01 All right, so you've been to IHOP before, right?
05:03 Everyone's been to IHOP, right?
05:04 Remember the good old days going to IHOP?
05:06 Fruity, tutti, fresh and fruity.
05:07 There you go.
05:08 And remember when IHOP at the time, they had like 20 different syrups or something.
05:13 It was so weird that they had all these syrups.
05:16 Was it four or something?
05:18 I want to say 20 because as kids--
05:20 We went from 20 to four.
05:22 Well, but as kids, you're like, "That's a lot."
05:24 I do remember.
05:25 And did they used to bring it, or did it sit on the table in like a little caddy
05:27 and you had all the different little flavors?
05:29 Yeah, they had the little caddies there.
05:30 But I remember they also made stuff up in the back.
05:32 Like they would have like a strawberry one or something like that
05:35 that they would have special, but they would bring out.
05:37 That's what I'm saying.
05:38 I thought there were so many because they had flavors and everything like that.
05:41 IHOP has a very special place in my heart because when we were little
05:45 and we didn't have a lot of money like I told you yesterday,
05:48 on our birthdays, my dad would always take us, just whoever's birthday it was,
05:52 just me and my dad or my sister, whoever, to IHOP to get Rudy, tutti, fresh and fruity.
05:57 And that was your birthday.
05:58 Because it was free.
05:59 Yeah.
06:00 Because it was free.
06:01 There you go.
06:02 My dad was like, "How can we make this as cheap as possible?"
06:04 We also had a Howard Johnson.
06:05 That was a Midwest--
06:06 Oh, yeah.
06:07 Howard Johnson.
06:08 Hojo's.
06:09 Not in California.
06:10 Not in the Midwest, I think.
06:11 Yeah.
06:12 It was pretty good.
06:13 All right.
06:14 Now that we got you hungry, after the break we're going to get a taste
06:16 of some of those delicious flapjacks.
06:18 So stick around as we head out to the Breakfast Kitchen Bar.
06:22 Ooh.
06:23 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:26 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:28 All right.
06:43 National Flapjack Day is coming up this week,
06:45 and we're so excited to talk with Ariel at Breakfast Kitchen Bar
06:49 about their delicious flapjack offerings for the occasion.
06:54 Welcome, Ariel.
06:55 Hi.
06:59 Thank you.
07:00 So tell me a little bit about Breakfast Kitchen Bar for those at home
07:03 who maybe haven't heard of you guys.
07:07 So Breakfast Kitchen Bar, we have two locations.
07:10 We just moved from the Scottsdale Quarter.
07:12 That was our original one.
07:14 We're here now at Hayden and Northside,
07:17 and then we have another location at Desert Ridge Marketplace.
07:20 We have breakfast, lunch.
07:22 We have a bunch of keto options, a little bit of everything here.
07:26 And I have been to the Desert Ridge location,
07:29 and I was saying earlier in the show that I love that you really are true to your name,
07:34 that you are about breakfast and a bar because you have delicious drinks there, right?
07:39 Yes, we do.
07:42 And we have a brand-new beverage menu also with a bunch of new flights,
07:46 shareables, Bloody Marys, martinis.
07:50 Ooh.
07:51 That looks incredible.
07:52 Okay, so let's get to the name of the day or the week, which is Flapjacks Pancakes.
07:57 Tell us a little bit about your food.
07:59 Yes, Flapjack Day.
08:03 We have tons of different pancakes.
08:06 Here we have our keto cannoli pancakes.
08:09 They have a cannoli filling in them, and they are gluten-free keto.
08:14 That comes with a sugar-free syrup, sugar-free chocolate chips on top,
08:18 some fresh fruits.
08:20 We have our original keto pancakes that have the pork sausage and bacon crumbles,
08:27 also served with the sugar-free syrup.
08:30 And then we have our churro keto pancakes right here,
08:36 and those are drizzled with the sugar-free chocolate syrup.
08:41 Our original buttermilk pancakes are going to be right here.
08:46 They're made with our buttermilk pancake mix and then topped with our honey ricotta whip.
08:52 Ooh, Ariel, all of that looks delicious.
08:56 Here comes our chef Ramon with our kids' chocolate chip pancake.
09:03 And we have a lot of really delicious kid options.
09:07 I know everyone's on spring break coming up, so bring your kids in.
09:11 Lots of kid options here.
09:13 Ooh, I love that.
09:14 And, you know, Ariel, for me, I'm a new mom, so I love that you have the kid option there.
09:19 A little bit smaller, you know, portion-wise, but still looks absolutely incredible.
09:25 But I see that there are some other dishes on the table,
09:28 because you are more than just pancakes, obviously.
09:31 Yeah, we brought out a couple other items to show you here.
09:36 This is our farmer's market omelet right here.
09:40 That one has all the veggies in it, topped with our homemade tomato, pesto, and goat cheese.
09:46 Right here we have our keto pistachio mousse,
09:51 and that's going to be a sugar-free pistachio mousse on top of fresh strawberries and blueberries.
09:57 And then we have here our protein pancake bowl.
10:02 That one's going to be our protein pancake, chopped up with peanut butter, berry puree, fresh fruit,
10:09 and then syrup with that as well.
10:11 Ooh, Ariel, all of this looks so good.
10:14 But I know you guys do more than just breakfast, because you have lunch options too, right?
10:19 We do, yes. We have a lot of lunch options.
10:23 We have chicken sandwiches, burgers, lunch bowls.
10:28 We have a really great blackened salmon coleslaw bowl. That's my favorite.
10:33 Nice. Ooh, that all sounds so tasty. It's making me, making me, my mouth water a little bit.
10:38 And I see you have a beautiful patio out there.
10:41 You can grab a Bloody Mary, go sit outside on the patio,
10:44 just enjoy this gorgeous new location right there at Hayden, or your other location up at Desert Ridge.
10:50 Yes, and it is definitely patio weather.
10:54 We are filling up on the patio, and it's just beautiful outside.
10:58 Okay, so a quick question that I have, because obviously you're all about breakfast,
11:02 you're all about, you know, the Bloody Marys and all of that.
11:04 So a lot of people think of brunch and breakfast kind of items as only happening on the weekend,
11:08 but you guys do this all throughout the week, right?
11:10 Yep, we're open every day from 7 to 2.30.
11:16 So we do breakfast, brunch, lunch, all the drinks.
11:21 Ooh, that's fantastic.
11:22 All right, Ariel, well, thank you so much for showing off those incredible pancakes/flapjacks
11:28 and all those other great offerings you have.
11:30 Like you said, everybody can find you at your two locations in the Valley.
11:32 Thank you guys so much, and cheers.
11:34 Thank you. Cheers.
11:38 All right, guys, stick around, because International Women's Day is coming up,
11:42 and we're getting a look at how women are progressing in the tech industry.
11:59 The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix is sponsored on behalf of DeVry University by KEF Media.
12:05 International Women's Day is a time to celebrate the accomplishment of women's unique gifts around the world.
12:13 And while women have gained a lot of ground over time, they are still underrepresented in the tech industry.
12:19 Last week, I talked with Lynn Daum, Executive Director of Women in Cyberspace,
12:22 and Scarlett Howry, Vice President of Public Workforce Solutions for DeVry University.
12:27 We're hoping to change all that.
12:29 Good morning, Lynn and Scarlett. How are you doing this morning?
12:34 We're great. Great.
12:37 Good. Hey, Lynn, let's talk a little bit about your organization and what you're doing to help close the gap in tech.
12:43 Sure. So, Women in Cybersecurity, or the WSIS organization, we're a 501(c)(3) member-based nonprofit
12:52 with a mission to recruit, retain, and advance women in cybersecurity.
12:56 But we exist because we're at a critical workforce shortage.
12:59 CyberSeek reports that there's over 570,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs right now.
13:06 And women represent roughly 24 to 26 percent of that.
13:10 So what we do is we create accessibility and opportunities for women to not only get into cybersecurity,
13:17 but advance in their careers because of it.
13:19 And we also partner with higher ed institutions such as DeVry in order to help fill that gender gap.
13:26 Wow. That's important right there. And Scarlett, what's very important too is education needing to evolve
13:32 to meet the needs of today's workforce, right?
13:34 Absolutely. You know, higher ed institutions need to create short cycles of learning.
13:41 And they should include industry-recognized credentials by understanding where the biggest skills gap,
13:47 working alongside industry and corporations to understand that.
13:52 We're able to incorporate that into our degree program so that learners gain the skills not only that they want,
13:57 but that the industry demands.
13:59 It's why DeVry created the Women in Tech Scholars Program.
14:03 Our program creates resources and support for women so that they break into a career in technology.
14:11 Not only do our programs include curriculum as well as DeVry's care formula,
14:17 but we also include in our scholars program our partnerships with women in cybersecurity
14:22 and other corporate partners to ensure learners gain the skills that they need to break into a career in tech
14:28 and stay in that field.
14:30 In addition, we work with partners like Women in Cybersecurity and our industry partners
14:35 to uncover where all of those gaps are so that learners, when they come out of a school,
14:41 they have all of the skills that they need in order to help industry to grow, thrive,
14:47 and continue to compete in a highly competitive market.
14:51 Yeah. Scarlett said something very important, Lynn, and that's of course education with us.
14:55 So what should women expect on their path to a career in tech?
15:01 We believe in the value that women bring industry that require the digital talent.
15:06 But what we don't want is financial and personal hurdles to stand in the way.
15:11 And so to Scarlett's point is that it's super important to have these type of programming efforts
15:17 with all the wraparound services.
15:20 And those services include resources, accessibility, mentoring, funding, financial support, and so much more.
15:29 And that's the point for women to launch into their career.
15:32 It's a starting point for them to get into tech or get into the lucrative cybersecurity careers that are out there.
15:37 Wow. All right. So, Scarlett, with that said, what programs are available to help prepare someone
15:42 for, of course, a career in tech and cybersecurity?
15:45 Yeah. In addition to DeVry's Women in Tech Scholars Program,
15:50 we also offer our Future Cyber Defender Scholars Program,
15:53 which brings in the curriculum from cybersecurity so that learners gain the skills that they need
15:58 in order to become a cybersecurity professional.
16:01 Wow. All right. Well, that's incredible for a lot of women to get into it.
16:04 And, of course, those who are looking to for, you know, another career path.
16:08 So where can people find more information?
16:10 Yeah. If you want to find out more about DeVry's Women in Tech and Future Cyber Defender Scholars Program,
16:16 you can do so by going to DeVry.edu.
16:19 Love it. Thank you two very much for joining us this morning.
16:22 Thank you.
16:24 Thank you.
16:25 [Music]
16:28 The preceding portion of the Arizona Daily Mix was sponsored on behalf of DeVry University by KEF Media.
16:34 [Music]
16:37 This is the Arizona Daily Mix.
16:40 [Music]
16:46 Welcome back to the chilly Arizona Daily Mix. It's cold in the studio today.
16:51 Still to come on the show, we're getting a look at the top toy trends for 2024.
16:56 Yeah. Plus, in just a few minutes, I'm going to be testing my spelling skills
17:00 with some of the finalists heading to the Arizona Spelling Bee Competition.
17:04 So you said you did spelling bees when you were in school. Do you remember any of the words that you had to spell?
17:08 Cat.
17:09 Dog.
17:11 Really?
17:12 Yep.
17:13 They didn't give you like onomatopoeia?
17:15 I'm glad they didn't.
17:20 Yeah.
17:21 Oh, man.
17:22 But I think I lost to, I don't know, I think it was like,
17:25 what was, I think it was, I think it was desert or dessert.
17:30 I think because it was like, yeah.
17:33 I get, that's hard.
17:34 That's, you know what I always have to think of is that there's an extra S in dessert
17:39 because there's an extra little something when you have your dessert.
17:42 It's like your little extra something.
17:43 And what Aaron here taught me, the way to remember,
17:46 Oh, okay.
17:47 What he would do is that you always want an extra dessert,
17:50 then you want a extra desert.
17:53 Sure.
17:55 That's what he said.
17:56 That's what he said.
17:58 Sure.
17:59 You don't want extra desert, but you want extra dessert.
18:00 Yeah, that's the way I think of it is that like, you know, your extra S,
18:03 the second S is like your extra little something after your dinner.
18:06 Just helping you guys out with spelling.
18:09 There you go.
18:10 But something you don't have to spell and that is of course spring training.
18:12 But you can win it.
18:14 That's right. Spring training baseball is back and CW7 Spinato's Pizzeria and Family Kitchen
18:18 are teaming up to send you out to the ballpark.
18:20 All you have to do is simply just head over to aztv.com/win
18:23 and enter for your chance to score four tickets to a game.
18:27 There's nothing better than a day at the park with the family
18:30 and thanks to Spinato's for making it all happen.
18:33 Absolutely.
18:34 All right, let's see. Can you spell pizzeria?
18:36 Is it on the screen somewhere?
18:38 Can you?
18:40 No.
18:42 P-I-Z-Z-Pizza. Is it Pizzeria or Pizzeria?
18:47 Pizzeria.
18:48 So it's P-I-Z-Z-A. Pizza. No?
18:53 Mm-mm.
18:54 Well, I don't know.
18:55 E-R-I-A.
18:56 Well, that's what I just asked you. Is it Pizzeria or Pizzeria?
18:59 Well, is it pizza?
19:01 Pizzeria.
19:02 Pizzeria.
19:03 So it's P-I-Z-Z-E-R-I-A.
19:06 But then how do you spell pizza? Pizza is P-I-Z-Z-A?
19:08 Yeah.
19:09 But then...
19:10 They're changing it up on us.
19:12 But I thought it was just Pizzeria.
19:14 Between us, we can almost spell the word Pizzeria.
19:17 Well, you're getting at me. You asked me, like, is it pizza or pizza...
19:23 What'd you say it was?
19:24 I said, is it Pizzeria or Pizzeria?
19:26 Pizzeria.
19:27 It's Pizzeria.
19:28 See, I don't think I would pronounce it Pizzeria. I'd pronounce it Pizzeria.
19:31 You're right. Grady just said you can't ask questions during a spelling bee.
19:34 But you know what you can do? You can ask them to use it in a sentence.
19:37 So we would say, "Go get a slice of pizza from Spinato's Pizzeria."
19:42 Ooh, I like that. Okay.
19:44 See?
19:45 I'm going to ask a lot of questions in this.
19:47 There you go. See, you can always ask them to put it in a sentence.
19:49 Have you ever seen the movie, what's it called, Bad Spell?
19:52 What's it, uh...
19:53 Bad Spell with Justin Bateman.
19:56 No, is it about a spelling bee?
19:58 Yeah, he's an adult going to compete in a spelling bee because he never passed, like, sixth grade or something like that.
20:04 No, that sounds like, um...
20:07 What's it called?
20:08 Billy Madison.
20:09 Billy Madison, same thing too.
20:10 But this one was, this was a spelling bee, actually.
20:12 He went to a spelling bee competition and everything.
20:14 They totally jacked that from the Adam Sandler movie, which is...
20:16 Although they didn't finish school.
20:18 Is it Billy Madison?
20:19 I think it's called Bad Speller. I think it's Bad Speller.
20:21 Bad Speller.
20:22 Yeah, it's very funny.
20:23 It just makes me think of in Billy Madison when he's trying to spell couch.
20:26 All right.
20:28 Anyways, we can come off on a tangent on this.
20:30 Oh my gosh.
20:31 Something kind of meaningful that was very important going on.
20:34 Yeah, so I was looking through, you know, just the news stories of the day and stuff,
20:37 and we had talked about something a couple weeks ago,
20:39 and I actually almost asked our producer, Alyssa, to not make me talk about it
20:43 because talking about it was making me get choked up.
20:46 But do you remember the story about the mom who was a musician,
20:50 and she wrote a song that was an uplifting, beautiful song
20:54 that was meant to kind of, like, make people dance and have fun,
20:57 and she sadly was on hospice at the time,
21:01 and she wanted her song to go viral so that all the proceeds of the song
21:07 would go to her son if and when she passed away.
21:09 Well, the update is that she unfortunately did pass away from cancer.
21:14 She lost her battle, but the song reached number one on the TikTok charts,
21:20 and it was in the top 50 Billboard charts,
21:22 which is a huge deal for an independent artist to do,
21:24 and her music is going to be continued on through her family and through her son,
21:29 and if we have the song, we should play it.
21:31 It's such a groovy tune and a really uplifting, beautiful song.
21:36 [music]
21:43 Yeah, that's really nice.
21:45 It's a tough story because especially as a mom,
21:48 it's something that you hate the thought of is leaving your kids,
21:52 but she left him with something really beautiful and a great legacy.
21:55 So anyways, we wanted to give you guys that update.
21:57 And that's important there of leaving something behind for your child,
22:01 and I mean, you know, as a parent, it is kind of like, what do we leave behind?
22:05 But this is great because it's going to live on for him and to remember his mother.
22:08 Yeah, something really tangible that she leaves him with.
22:10 So great. So a nice song, and I know a lot of celebrities
22:13 have started getting on top of it and using it and stuff.
22:15 Yeah, a lot of celebs, a lot of people on TikTok,
22:17 and so you can go on and watch that and listen to her song.
22:20 I like it.
22:21 Anyways, what else you can watch today is our new lineup here on The CW7.
22:26 Starting this afternoon, we have two hours of your favorite funny man.
22:29 That's Steve Harvey and Family Feud at 4.
22:31 We're following that up with The Big Bang Theory,
22:33 which brings on the laughs at 6 and 630.
22:36 Then we have our new CW primetime lineup,
22:40 which is the brand new Wild Cards at 7, followed by Family Law at 8.
22:43 You've got to check those two out.
22:45 Then we have your favorite funny man again at 9,
22:47 and hang in there for the craziest sitcom on TV, which is Mom at 10.
22:51 It's all about the smiles here at The CW7.
22:54 As we like to say, it's all good.
22:57 Okay, the Arizona Spelling Bee finalists is coming up,
23:04 and we are lucky to have two of the students competing
23:07 to go on to the big Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland.
23:10 And Emily Ramirez, Laura, is here to tell us how we can cheer on the students
23:15 for this big competition.
23:17 But let's back it up and talk about the Arizona Foundation
23:20 and how important you guys are to education throughout Arizona.
23:24 Yeah, so the Arizona Educational Foundation
23:27 has been in the spelling bee business for well over 20 years.
23:32 We've been the official state sponsor since 2001,
23:36 and we partner directly with the Scripps National Spelling Bee
23:40 in order to help bring our students all the way to nationals.
23:43 And this is a big spelling bee.
23:45 And again, the Scripps Spelling Bee has been around since I was a little kid.
23:49 Don't look at me like that, guys. It's been around that long.
23:52 And so this is really big for students to get to here
23:55 because there's scholarships, there's all kinds of things,
23:58 and it's on national TV now, which is amazing.
24:01 But here we have our finals coming up on March 16th.
24:07 Yep, March 16th at the Madison Center of the Arts.
24:10 We will begin around 930 in the morning,
24:13 and it is free and open to the public.
24:15 So we'd love everybody to come and help support.
24:19 These are just two of our 28 spellers that we will be showcasing that day.
24:24 So, yeah, come on and cheers on.
24:26 And so these are students all over Arizona.
24:29 And so how do they make it to this far?
24:31 How many times do they have to go through to make it this far?
24:34 Well, in Arizona, we have over 500,000 students
24:39 that end up competing through the Spelling Bee,
24:42 which start at the school in classrooms,
24:45 then they go on to school bees, then we have district bees,
24:48 then they go and compete on to regionals or county bees.
24:52 And then ultimately, we are left with 28 Arizona state finalists
24:56 that will come and compete in March for the state finals.
25:00 I like that. And we have two of them here.
25:02 Let's introduce ourselves. You are?
25:04 -Aleah Alpert. -And?
25:05 -Alvin. -Yes. And this is really great.
25:08 -Fifth grade, right? -Yes.
25:10 -Yes. And A3. -Yeah.
25:12 And now let me talk-- because you've been there before.
25:15 And we'll get to you in just a minute because you've been up on five,
25:18 and so I'm nervous, but I've got to look at my competition here.
25:20 So how was it going to the Scripps National?
25:24 -It was great. -Yeah?
25:25 And so how much do you practice with this?
25:27 How much do you spend learning words and doing things?
25:31 I spend, well, four and a half hours daily about, sometimes a little more.
25:35 And do you know how many words you know,
25:37 or is it just kind of like they're all just out there and you find them?
25:40 Well, at least hopefully I definitely know the 4,000 words on Words of the Champions list,
25:45 which is what Scripps takes some of their words from.
25:50 And then there are other lists that you should know too
25:53 because they'll take it from that as well.
25:55 4,000 words you-- oh, my goodness, that's amazing.
25:58 So now do you know any languages that are in with them or like backgrounds?
26:03 Well, you do study languages. I mean, I speak a little bit of Spanish,
26:06 but you study language rules, language patterns, like what to guess
26:10 because ultimately you're going to get a word that you don't know.
26:13 You have to be able to guess.
26:14 Wow. Okay, and with you, you've been there.
26:17 You've been a finalist of getting there in fifth place.
26:20 And so how much do you practice the words?
26:25 I study the list of 4,000, and then I study about two hours in the weekend
26:32 and about an hour each day.
26:35 Each day, so because you have school. Wow, that's amazing.
26:38 Now, do you get nervous up there? Are you scared or anything when you go up there?
26:42 I'm terrified, but--
26:43 Are you?
26:44 I mean, maybe that's just me.
26:45 Oh, my goodness, to know the words. So this is so cool.
26:47 Okay, we thought we'd go ahead and give our own spelling bee competition here with the students.
26:53 And so you have some official words there?
26:56 Yes, I do.
26:57 Okay, so who should we start with? The winner, me, or who do you want to go with?
27:02 We'll leave you for last. You know, I have some special words for you, bud.
27:07 Oh, no. All right.
27:09 All right, Aliyah, your word is exposition.
27:12 Exposition. E-X-P-O-S-I-T-I-O-N. Exposition.
27:18 Correct.
27:19 All right, all right.
27:21 All right, a little break.
27:23 Denunciation.
27:25 Denunciation. May I please have the definition?
27:29 Yes. The act of pronouncing, as a person, idea, course of conduct, or political philosophy, to be blameworthy or evil.
27:39 The senator's speech was a denunciation of many federal programs.
27:43 Denunciation. D-E-N-U-N-C-I-A-T-I-O-N. Denunciation.
27:56 Correct.
27:57 All right, well, there you go. All right, well, that's good. We ran out of time for me. All right.
28:00 Okay, you know what, actually, information's on the screen on how you can go out and support them all.
28:06 So you can get over to azdailymix.com.
28:08 Go ahead and give me my word right now, and we'll see if I can get it before we go into break.
28:13 Okay.
28:15 Utiratious.
28:16 And we'll be back with more of the Arizona Daily Mix after this.
28:20 Stick around.
28:21 [music]
28:28 [music]
28:31 The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix is sponsored on behalf of Molis and Doug.

28:41 [music]
28:43 It's time to announce some of the exciting new toys and toy trends for 2024.
28:48 Last week, Brad talked with toy industry expert, Elizabeth Warner, to find out what's new and fun.
28:54 [music]
28:56 Good morning, my favorite toy guru, Elizabeth Warner. How you doing?
29:02 Good morning. I'm well. Thank you for having me.
29:04 Well, this is a very important time because we are going into a new year, new trends with toys and things for the kids.
29:12 And my understanding is that arts and crafts are really on the point for this year.
29:19 They are, which as a mom of four makes me so happy.
29:22 They can put down the tablets, right, and spend a little time playing.
29:26 Let me show you this one. This is called Sticker Wow.
29:29 It's brought to us by Molis and Doug, and we all know and love Molis and Doug items.
29:34 Well, this is really innovative because now they can actually play with stickers and learn at the same time.
29:41 300 stickers come inside of these adorable sticker stampers.
29:44 They are refillable.
29:46 It comes with a 24-page activity pad, which has counting, matching, lots of fun things.
29:52 They work on those fine motor skills. They're going to be creative.
29:55 Perfect for at home or on the go.
29:57 These stickers, by the way, they peel right off of every surface, so no worries.
30:01 And I think it looks cute in an Easter basket, just saying that out loud.
30:05 It does, and very easy to put in. I like that idea of learning with the stickers.
30:09 We might get that here for the station.
30:13 All right, let's talk TV shows and what toys are coming out to match those this year.
30:19 Yes, so always relevant Paw Patrol Jungle Pups Marshalls Elephant Vehicle.
30:25 Now, this is still the number one preschool property out there with these exciting rescues and adventures.
30:31 Well, this elephant here, yes, he's got tusks and wheels so we can get through any obstacles.
30:35 That water tank holds three water projectiles that the kids are going to be able to load them up
30:40 and let them out into the jungle wherever they need to.
30:42 This is a lot of fun because they get to reenact their favorite scenes.
30:45 And it even comes with Marshall in his red Jungle Explorer uniform and helmet, which the kids are a little wild for.
30:52 Oh, my gosh, that is so cool. I want these toys for myself always when I see these Paw Patrol.
30:59 Exactly.
31:01 Hey, Elizabeth, let's talk about nurturing toys.
31:03 That's something also parents are wanting to see this year.
31:07 Yes, that's social, emotional learning, nurturing, loving.
31:11 Well, these are Gabbers. They're brought to us by Vtech.
31:14 They are so cute. They come in a few different colors.
31:17 Now our kids get to nurture them. They talk, they sing.
31:20 They can even perch on your shoulder.
31:22 It comes with a little magnetic egg that you slide underneath your shirt, put the birdie on top.
31:27 Now you can push the belly. And when you push the belly, it's going to repeat what you say in either a funny voice or by tweeting.
31:34 It also has a little wing that has a musical note on it.
31:37 You push that, you're going to get to hear songs.
31:39 And then it's got sensors inside, so if you shake it up or you toss it in the air or flip it upside down,
31:43 it's going to make some silly sounds for you.
31:45 So these are a really wonderful way for our kids to engage and interact.
31:49 Oh, my gosh, that's so cool. I love that.
31:51 Okay, teaching, because toys are, of course, on the trend of teaching our kids.
31:56 So what do you got for us?
31:59 Yes, so for our kids ages 8 and up, the Gecko Run Marble Run.
32:03 Now my bet, Brad, is this will be your fave today.
32:06 This is from Thames & Kosmos, and you take that classic marble run, but you bring it to a whole new level.
32:11 These are flexible tracks, and the pads themselves are like little mini suction cups.
32:16 You can't even see them. They're so small.
32:18 So there's no glue. You can move this all around on any flat surface, your windows, your fridge, a flat wall, a glass, a mirror.
32:26 You name it, you can put these up on it, and kids are working on their engineering.
32:29 This is literally physics in action learning, problem solving.
32:34 I think that this is wonderful, and my hubby and I have it on the fridge, and we have daily competitions now.
32:39 I was going to say, we got to get to them and have the marble races going on.
32:45 That would be so cool.
32:47 I'll tell you, Elizabeth, this is awesome, great stuff.
32:50 Where can we find more information?
32:52 Yes, you can go to our website, which is warnerinfo.com, and you have time for one more quick one?
32:59 Yeah, I do. Yeah, go ahead.
33:01 Okay, yeah, it's okay. So this is our Learning Friends 100 Words book.
33:06 Now 100 vocabulary words selected by learning experts, pets, animals, food, mealtime opposites, and so much more.
33:14 All the kids have to do is push the buttons.
33:16 They're going to hear these silly little animals talking to them, giving them words and sound effects.
33:21 It can be done in English and Spanish with just the flip of a switch.
33:24 I love boosting literacy, and again, another one for the Easter basket.
33:29 I like it. There we go. Again, some great items there for kids to learn and have some fun with.
33:35 You bring them to us. Amazing. So again, where can we find information?
33:40 Thank you, Brad. Yes, you can go to our website, which is warnerinfo.com.
33:44 Perfect. Thank you, Elizabeth.
33:47 Thank you very much.

34:01 The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix is sponsored by Scottsdale Bullion & Coin.
34:18 Anytime we have questions about your options when it comes to investing in finance, we talk to Eric from SBC.
34:23 Thanks for doing this.
34:24 Well, thanks for having me once again.
34:26 There is a term that more and more people are becoming familiar with, and it's the petrodollar, because of what China is doing in other countries.
34:32 Can you explain what this is and what's going on?
34:35 Okay, so to kind of summarize it, the petrodollar was what we used to replace the gold standard when we went off of the gold standard in '71.
34:46 By '73, we shook hands with Saudi Arabia and the petronations to make sure that they would use only U.S. dollars in trade internationally for that of petro.
34:56 So this gave us a stronghold all over the world when it came to our currency dominance, because they would have to go through us to get to them.
35:05 And that was honestly, that was a handshake deal. You're not being facetious. It really was just a handshake.
35:11 Absolutely. Not only was it a handshake, but it was something that has given us dominance since the '70s.
35:18 And here we are in 2023, and for the first time ever, that's being jeopardized because China right now sees an opportunity.
35:28 The current administration is very anti-petro, if you would.
35:32 And then we saw China go to Saudi Arabia and then do a diplomatic approach when they brought Iran and Saudi Arabia to the table together in peace negotiations.
35:44 And then also immediately following that, we saw for the first time the yuan being exchanged for petro out of Saudi Arabia.
35:53 So, I mean, this is a huge game changer, and it's something that everybody is going to feel eventually.
36:00 Isn't India a little involved in this in a way too with the petro dollar? Aren't they trying to advance in that area?
36:05 Not only India, but I mean, there are many nations around the Middle East.
36:10 The more you look into this, the more you're going to find that it is a rabbit hole that you're going to tumble down.
36:17 And the likely outcome here is that we are no longer going to reserve our currency as the petro standard.
36:23 And that is going to possibly jeopardize, not possibly, but it will jeopardize our currency as the reserve currency of the world.
36:32 And the big problem with that is we've got so much debt. What keeps us afloat is the fact that we're number one.
36:38 But what if we weren't number one? I mean, Mike, I'm sure you probably would have concerns about that.
36:43 Right. Yeah. And so if that's happening, if the dollar is weakening around the world, which it appears like it is, how is gold or what do you recommend?
36:52 What is a way to protect yourself? Well, the reason why gold in in uncertain times, the only certain thing is gold.
36:59 And the reason why is because you go back as far as you want. Gold has always been a standard of money worldwide, not just in our country.
37:08 But, you know, there's no way that we're going to find in our lifetimes or the next gold not being a standard of money.
37:15 And therefore, if you retreat and put money into something like gold, you know, it's going to be there no matter what happens to the currency that, you know, your country provides to your citizens.
37:27 Well, I know that you talk about just when you say gold, but I know that there are a lot of different options and a lot of different things that you can buy, whether it's physical gold or whatever it is.
37:37 If people want to learn more on what the right thing to buy is, not just gold, but how to buy it. How do you do that?
37:43 Well, the best thing to do is just give us a call. You can text us. You can call us. You can go to SBCGold.com.
37:49 But more interesting than that right now is more that they can learn about the petrodollar as well.
37:54 If they go to our website right now, they can go ahead and they can request a copy of the petrodollar.
38:01 And then on there, once they get the link to that, they can even go ahead and sign up to have all the upcoming events that we've been sourcing and showing people that will pop up in their email feed and that they can watch this in real time.
38:15 Well, the advantage also, I think, for people is even though you are nationally known, this is a local company, you're Scottsdale Bullion and Coins.
38:22 So they can actually go into an office, talk to somebody face to face. You're proud to serve the local market.
38:27 Oh, absolutely. I was born in Arcadia and I love servicing the community here. I mean, yes, we do business all over the country, but we love it when people come in.
38:36 You know, the idea of getting information is one thing, but getting reliable information is another thing. Expert advice. Here's local expert advice at SBC.
38:43 Get down and see Eric and his team. Make the phone call. Go to the website. Thanks for coming down.
38:47 Thank you so much, Mike.

38:57 The following portion of the Arizona Daily Mix is sponsored on behalf of Vrbo by the broadcast experts.
39:06 Good morning, Tamika. How are you doing this morning?
39:11 I'm good. How are you?
39:13 I'm doing great because you're in a place I've been wanting to visit for this great event going on this week. Tell me about what you're doing and where you're at.
39:20 Yes, well, where I'm at is Big Sky, Montana. See this beautiful Vrbo view that I have.
39:26 I'm here right now, but this week I've actually been hanging out with hundreds of black outdoor enthusiasts for the National Brotherhood of Snow Sports 51st annual celebration.
39:38 I mean, it is a vibe on the slopes for sure.
39:41 The organization focuses on diversity and representation on the slopes. It's one of the reasons or one of the events that contributes to the more than $100 billion that black travelers spend on vacations like this.
39:57 Yeah, well, it's amazing because I know they travel around to different ski resorts throughout the year. It's so amazing.
40:02 So being up in Montana must be just a great event going on there.
40:05 So let's talk about, of course, when planning a trip and what you look for to help black travelers get the best out of their trips.
40:13 Absolutely. One of the first things I look for is where am I staying?
40:17 And especially when I'm considering family and friends who are tagging along, you know, it's like a family reunion.
40:22 So places like this is perfect to really create memories under one roof.
40:26 And also diversity, I should say inclusion, destinations that are inclusive.
40:32 That's important to be able to travel someplace where you see yourself, you know, and, you know, it's just about the vibe as well.
40:40 So and that's I love how you said bringing the family together.
40:43 So with that, what tips do you have about, of course, getaways and how we could bring everyone together or even just ourselves on some getaways?
40:51 Absolutely. Book now. I know we like to wait until later, but book now.
40:56 And it's not too late to book a ski trip if you were looking to come out here and get on the slopes or go anywhere for that matter.
41:03 Book now. And also when you were preparing for next season, if you can't book right now, look at booking before October.
41:11 And also check out apps like Verbo where you can use those filters to really search for things like and a ski in a ski out.
41:21 That's the home I'm in now. It's ski in a ski. It's convenient.
41:25 Yeah, I like that. And they're not that expensive if you start planning now.
41:28 And that's the big part about it that, you know, you want people to do.
41:31 All right. You're on the mountain right now, but let's talk about other destinations to get out to.
41:37 Absolutely. A hot spot, especially in the summertime, is Martha's Vineyard.
41:42 It attracts a lot of black travelers in the summertime, as I mentioned.
41:46 And it is a lot of events, I would say events like the African-American Film Festival.
41:51 And another another popular hot spot is Sag Harbor.
41:55 Sag Harbor is the black community of the Hamptons.
42:00 And also one of my new favorite Caribbean destinations happens to be Antigua and Barbuda.
42:05 I mean, fun fact, they have three hundred and sixty five beaches.
42:09 So really for one beach for every day of the year.
42:12 Oh, I like that. And also, Tamika, one more question.
42:15 Do you recommend people to go into other like, of course, neighborhood when they go like, you know, someone from South Carolina, go to Alabama.
42:22 There's some great ways to connect with people there when you take these vacations. Am I right?
42:27 Absolutely. You want to be able to experience the culture.
42:30 The culture includes locals, food, just the whole vibe, I would say, not just the vibe here on the slopes, but also the vibe in other destinations.
42:40 And also you want to be able to stay in places where everybody can connect.
42:44 I will continue to say places like this are verbal, are amazing.
42:48 I like it. I like it. Tamika, this is awesome. Got me ready to go plan a trip right now.
42:52 So where can I find more information?
42:54 Yes. Go to the National Brotherhood of Snow Sports, Snow Sports, that is.
43:00 Www.nbs.org.
43:04 I love it. Thank you. Tamika, thank you very much.
43:07 Thank you for having me.
43:10 The preceding portion of the Arizona Daily Mix was sponsored on behalf of Verbal by the broadcast experts.

43:21 We did. So we'll see you back here tomorrow.

43:29 No one's making us spell anything tomorrow.
