01:11 And one women-owned local brewery is making a special beer in honor of this month.
01:16 And I got the chance to check out how it was made.

01:41 But I think recently they expanded and got this like big, huge area to brew and everything.

01:52 It's coming back to town.
01:53 We're going to get a special sneak peek performance from Mr. Jay White.

02:09 And yeah, he actually has his undergrad in jazz.
02:14 And he's an incredible jazz player as well.

02:20 He mainly plays piano.
02:21 He can like fiddle on other things, but I don't think he would claim that he plays anything else.

04:09 Yeah, be honest, because all of a sudden you're going to be like so surprised, you're going
04:13 to jump up and walk, and you're going to be...
04:15 Well, we're just worried about crawling right now.
04:17 I mean, once he starts crawling, yes, we have everything to baby proof, we just haven't
04:21 quite done it yet.
04:23 So maybe this weekend we'll have to do it, but my mom is coming into town this weekend,
04:28 so maybe she can help us with that.
04:30 No, it goes fast.
04:31 I mean, I remember when my kids were crawling, they started, and all of a sudden you don't
04:35 realize they're walking.
04:36 And we didn't, I mean, please, we had things that were, back in my days, cables hanging
04:39 and everything.
04:40 Just catch them in the corner.
04:41 Totally, exactly.
04:42 I can stand on it.
04:45 Also, what's kind of trending, and that is to let my neighbors and everyone know I am
04:48 okay.
04:49 Nothing's wrong with me, I know I've been losing weight, but I'm not on a doomsday...
04:52 Are you going to just disappear?
04:54 No, I'm not.
04:55 You're going to lose so much weight, you're just going to...
04:57 The reason why is that I'm getting new windows in the house, and people know that you have
05:00 to take everything down.
05:01 So yesterday I took everything down, I put paper up in my windows, and the neighbors
05:06 are like, "Uh, is everything okay?"
05:08 Oh no!
05:09 Yes, that's what it looks like outside.
05:10 So people are like, "Uh, hey Brad."
05:12 "Are you okay?"
05:13 "What's going on here?"
05:14 Exactly, so one of the neighbors asked me, but this is something you have to do, so I
05:19 had paper up in there, but today...
05:21 They're like waiting for you to come out with a tinfoil hat.
05:24 Exactly, all this stuff.
05:25 But you know what the problem was?
05:27 Was finding paper.
05:28 Finding newspapers.
05:29 Oh, you didn't have any?
05:30 I guess I wouldn't either.
05:31 Remember, back in the day, the paper used to be really thick, and you used to be able
05:36 to hold on to it to make fires and do stuff in the fireplace.
05:39 But now it's so thin, or they don't even have them, because everything's online.
05:42 Yeah, where'd you get them?
05:43 So actually, a friend had a bunch of old newspapers from 2018.
05:47 Oh my gosh.
05:48 That's what I love about older people.
05:50 Okay, do you want to know something really cool?
05:52 We only have 30 seconds, so I'll tell this really quickly.
05:54 But Josh's parents used to live in a really, really, really old house that was attached
05:58 to the church that his dad worked at, and in the basement, they had a bunch of old newspapers
06:03 from like the 20s and 30s, and we went down and they had like New York Times newspapers
06:07 that were talking about World War II.
06:09 Oh my gosh.
06:10 Crazy, crazy, crazy stuff.
06:11 So yeah, we went through them, we're looking through all of it, but it's like the ink was
06:14 like bleeding off and stuff.
06:16 They were so old, but yeah, it was pretty cool.
06:18 That's all, yeah, there was no paper, so I'm okay, my neighbors.

06:22 Hey, after the break, see how one organization is helping women in need in a very good trend of ours.

06:31 Hope Women's Center is a special place here in the Valley, and we've been honored to have
06:46 them on the show in the past.
06:48 Well, this year, they're celebrating 40 years, and we are so excited to have CEO Tammy Abernathy
06:54 here to tell us what they are up to.
06:56 Welcome, Tammy.
06:57 Thank you, so good to be on here.
06:58 We are so grateful for you guys and love to come on and talk about what we do at Hope
07:02 Women's Center.
07:03 And we love having you on, so we were just kind of chatting about everything you have
07:07 going on.
07:08 Yeah.
07:09 So before we get into all the kind of topical things that are happening, tell everybody
07:12 at home who maybe doesn't know about you guys who you are and what you do.
07:15 So we are a resource and referral center for women and teen girls.
07:18 We have six day locations across the state.
07:21 Our mission is to engage, encourage, and equip any woman or teen girl in any difficult life
07:25 situation.
07:26 So whether that's a single mom that's struggling, a teen that's struggling, somebody that's
07:30 just lost their job, whatever her struggle is, we want to wrap around her with support.
07:35 That's so cool.
07:36 And I know you guys do so many amazing things like training, like making sure that these
07:40 women have what they need.
07:41 Life skills, job training.
07:42 Life skills, job, yes, all of those things so that they can go from struggling to thriving.
07:47 Yes, exactly.
07:48 We love to say trauma to transformation.
07:50 We want to wrap her with support physically, emotionally, spiritually.
07:53 How do we give her practical tools to break long time cycles of poverty and abuse.
07:57 That's really, really cool.
07:59 What you're doing is so needed and it's so great.
08:02 And you're celebrating 40 years.
08:04 We are, we're really excited.
08:05 This is our 40th year as an organization and just the expansion that we've seen.
08:09 Last year we served over 1,700 women and just really expanding now statewide.
08:14 We're excited about some new programs we're launching.
08:16 So tell me really quickly what you're doing for the 40th anniversary because I'm sure
08:20 you're celebrating all year.
08:21 We're celebrating all year.
08:22 Yeah.
08:23 We've been delivering celebration boxes all this month to some of our partners.
08:26 But we are celebrating all year.
08:27 Every center will have a big open house where we'll have special speakers and just a lot
08:31 of fun at those.
08:32 We have our gala that will be obviously a big celebration for 40 years.
08:36 That's in September and just different events all year long to highlight what we're doing
08:40 and highlight the families we've been able to serve.
08:42 That's so cool and definitely something to be celebrated.
08:45 Congratulations on those 40 years.
08:47 That's really beautiful.
08:48 And in those 40 years I'm sure you have helped so many, many, many women.
08:53 Powerful stories of women.
08:54 I'm sure.
08:55 I'm sure.
08:56 I wish we could get into all of them.
08:57 We don't have enough time today.
08:58 I know.
08:59 But what I do want to focus on is a new cool thing that you're doing which is your mobile
09:02 outreach program.
09:03 So tell me a little bit about that.
09:04 We're excited about that.
09:05 So I feel like for the last 40 years we've had women coming to us in our day centers.
09:09 This year we want to go to them to be able to help more women who might not necessarily
09:13 be able to get to a day center.
09:14 So we're partnering with other non-profits and doing a little Hope pop-ups.
09:18 In this mobile we're calling it Hope on the Road.
09:20 So we'll go into a food bank, into a domestic violence shelter, into these partnerships
09:25 we built over the last 40 years and provide Hope services directly to women there.
09:29 So we're excited.
09:30 That's beautiful.
09:31 But when women are meeting you guys there, when you're kind of meeting them there, how
09:36 many services are you going to offer?
09:37 What are they going to find in these mobile services?
09:39 So we have a lot of our life skills services are now available on Zoom so they can do virtual
09:42 classes.
09:43 We can do one-on-one mentoring, crisis support right there.
09:46 We've expanded our Hope Heals counseling so we can do telehealth and do counseling.
09:50 And then all of our material resources.
09:52 So we can bring her, do you need shampoo, do you need diapers, what do you materially
09:55 need, we're going to be able to bring that to you.
09:57 And then we're going to get you connected to all of our services.
10:00 Oh man, Tammy, that is so cool.
10:02 And tell me really quickly some of those partners that people can go to.
10:06 So like if they happen to be at, I don't know, you said like Harvest.
10:09 Harvest Compassion Center is one of our partners.
10:11 So we have Hope pop-ups at their Maryville and West Phoenix location.
10:14 We've been talking to several different domestic violence shelters.
10:18 So we have partnerships right now with A New Leaf.
10:20 We'll be in the city of Surprise starting in April at their resource center.
10:24 And then we're looking northern and southern Arizona to start expanding into some of those
10:28 communities where we can't have a full center yet but where we can bring services to women
10:32 in crisis.
10:33 That's great.
10:34 And so for those of us at home watching, and this is something that's on your heart, you
10:37 want to help.
10:38 How do we get involved?
10:39 Hopewomencenter.org, we are 90% volunteers.
10:42 So we need the local community to step up.
10:44 They teach classes.
10:45 They can help with material resources.
10:47 So many different ways to get connected, families and individuals to support these moms and
10:51 women in crisis.
10:52 That's really cool.
10:53 So go to our website.
10:54 We'd love to connect with you.
10:55 And I love that you said moms first but also just any woman.
10:59 Any woman.
11:00 Any woman who's struggling.
11:01 She can be a young woman.
11:02 She can be someone who's--
11:03 A teenager.
11:04 She can be a woman in her 70s and 80s.
11:05 A lot of times at that point in life, they don't have family.
11:08 They don't have support.
11:09 So an older woman, too, we want to be able to support.
11:11 And then tell me about the tax credit, because I know that's big for you guys, too.
11:14 Yes, thank you for bringing that up.
11:15 Tax season is upon us.
11:17 We qualify for the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit.
11:19 So you can get $421 or $800 and something.
11:24 Yes, somewhere in the $800 range.
11:26 Somewhere in the $800 range.
11:27 We're not known for our math.
11:28 That's okay.
11:29 To get dollar-for-dollar state tax credits.
11:30 So it's a great way to save for your tax dollars.
11:33 I want them to support women and teen girls.
11:35 Definitely.

14:51 Well, hey, March is the month that reminds us to celebrate women around the world.
14:55 And a couple weeks ago, I had the chance to check out one, what one women-owned brewery
14:59 was doing to celebrate.
15:01 So March is Women's History Month, and we are so excited to be here in downtown Phoenix,
15:12 right on Roosevelt Row at Greenwood Brewing.
15:15 And I'm standing here with Megan, the owner.
15:17 Megan, thank you so much for chatting with us.
15:18 Thanks for being here.
15:19 Absolutely.
15:20 So tell me a little bit about your story, because if I'm correct, you are one of the
15:25 very, very few female-owned breweries here in Arizona.
15:28 Yes, it's less than 3% in the whole country that are solely women-owned.
15:32 So we like to say we're Arizona's women-owned and women-inspired brewing company, where
15:36 we make real beer for everyone.
15:39 And I've had your beer.
15:40 It's phenomenal.
15:41 It's delicious.
15:42 But you really got started through your specific beer called Her Story, right?
15:46 That was the first one you brewed.
15:48 Yes, exactly.
15:49 I actually started in my kitchen, graduated to my garage, and then rented space at another
15:53 brewery where that was the only beer I brewed for two and a half years while we were starting
15:56 Greenwood.
15:57 So it became our flagship beer, and throughout the month of March, we're actually featuring
16:01 that beer.
16:02 Very cool.
16:03 Yeah, I know you said you're featuring it at a couple different locations.
16:05 But before we get to that, let's talk about your location right here, because this is
16:09 so beautiful.
16:10 It's such a cool, unique space.
16:12 Not only do you have the indoor area here, this gorgeous bar, but you have a beer garden
16:16 outside too, right?
16:17 Yes.
16:18 So this whole space was built.
16:20 We started construction in the end of 2018, and it took two and a half years to build.
16:25 So this was all adaptive reuse.
16:27 So we built this space to be exactly what it was originally meant to be when it was
16:31 built in 1950, which was a storefront.
16:34 And so then on either side of our taproom are two beer gardens, and then we have our
16:39 brewery, which was actually a parking lot.
16:41 So we built that building.
16:43 And so it was an infill project in downtown.
16:45 So it's such a cute pocket park right in the heart of downtown Phoenix.
16:50 I love what you're doing with this space, and it really is a place for people to come
16:53 and gather and be together.
16:55 But the name of the month is All About Women, and you are a woman-owned business.
17:00 Have you faced a lot of adversity with that?
17:03 Of course.
17:04 I think that especially being a woman in mostly a male-dominated industry, things like securing
17:11 capital, securing a loan, things that are not as easily sought by women, I think the
17:19 more women we can get into doing those kind of activities is just going to help all of
17:23 us.
17:24 So yeah, I would say in a little bit of ways, yes.
17:27 But our community has welcomed us with open arms.
17:30 We actually opened in 2020, and we never closed, and it's because our community is absolutely
17:36 incredible.
17:37 That's so great.
17:38 Yeah, well, we love you guys.
17:39 We love supporting you, and something else really cool that you're doing is the brew
17:43 specifically for this month, which is called Women's Brew.
17:46 Yes, so my head brewer, Kristen LuParello, she is brewing with them one of our most popular
17:53 beers that we've ever come out with, which is a cold IPA.
17:55 It's a really fun beer, a mix between an ale and a lager, so nice for the warm weather
18:01 that's coming.
18:03 So we have our community come in.
18:05 They brew the beer.
18:06 They literally put the grain in our vessels.
18:09 We really celebrate here.
18:11 Sometimes when you walk in, we'll have, at 4 o'clock on a Friday, we'll have a bar full
18:17 of women.
18:18 I think that's so unique, and it's really a testament to what we're building and why
18:23 I started.
18:24 I started Greenwood because I felt underrepresented in the beer industry as a woman, and I felt
18:28 like I wasn't being marketed to, and I found that a lot of other women felt that way.
18:32 And so we make beer that's inspired by women, and so this is our month.
18:36 I love it.
18:37 Well, this is so great, and we were talking a little bit about your gorgeous cases that
18:40 you have over here.
18:41 You can get these at Whole Foods, at Costco, and you're specifically doing something really
18:45 special with the Her Story Brew.
18:47 So we have a special going on where a dollar of every pint that you buy from our taproom,
18:52 or we donate on behalf of our customers a dollar of every case or 5% of every keg that
18:57 we sell.
18:58 So all throughout the month of March, with the Her Story Brew, we're doing a donation
19:03 to women's foundations throughout all of Arizona.
19:06 That's really special.

19:57 The Arizona Jazz Festival on High Street is back for another year of jazz celebration.
20:02 Here to tell us all about it is saxophonist Jane White, who knows that people think the
20:07 trumpet or something is sexy, but it's the saxophone that does it.
20:09 It's the sax, man.
20:11 It speaks for itself, man.
20:12 It's the sax.
20:13 I love it.
20:14 Okay, first, before we start, let's remind people where High Street is, and then we'll
20:16 get into it, because we were talking about that.
20:18 Like, where's High Street?
20:20 So it's all the way down to 101, right at 56th Street exit.
20:23 So you got about 30 miles down to 101.
20:25 It's right near the top of Scottsdale.
20:27 Yeah, so right there where you pretty much go up, you'll go north.
20:30 It's this area that you look at and you go, "Okay, where's that?"
20:32 But it's a lot going on.
20:33 There's restaurants.
20:34 There's like a little grocery store, all kinds of stuff there.
20:36 And that is where the Jazz Festival is this year.
20:38 Great to be back, which is really nice.
20:40 And the lineup, wow!
20:42 I mean, this is amazing.
20:44 It's crazy.
20:45 So we got Robin Thicke.
20:47 If you like '90s R&B, we got Jodeci, SWV, En Vogue.
20:52 And Babyface.
20:54 Babyface.
20:55 You can't forget about Babyface.
20:57 And you're performing, too, which is really nice.
20:59 I am performing Friday night, so I'm going to have my band.
21:01 It's going to be high energy, electric, soulful, and I'm excited to be back on the festival.
21:06 And what I love about this festival, it brings a lot of people together from the community and different things
21:10 to enjoy this amazing music, as Lexi was saying, her husband plays, and he loves it, too.
21:15 So what brings people and jazz together?
21:17 Well, it's just a good time.
21:19 It doesn't offend anybody.
21:20 Jazz is universal.
21:21 It's been around since the '20s.
21:23 And so anybody can appreciate it.
21:25 I don't care where you're from, what background you have.
21:27 It's just good music, good time.
21:29 And out there, it's supposed to be a nice weekend.
21:31 And again, throughout the weekend, it's really nice.
21:33 And is it just one stage or are there different stages?
21:35 There's two stages.
21:36 So they have a main stage and they have a jazz stage.
21:38 So you've got Tyra Power on the jazz stage, Miss Boney James is going to be in the house, Eric Darius.
21:43 And once again, you're a Shooley on the house Friday night.
21:45 I love this.
21:46 And bringing it back here, I mean, we know it's been off and on for different reasons.
21:50 One was COVID.
21:51 I know they had to stop, and then they started bringing people back outside, which is really nice.
21:55 And again, bringing people from all over the place.
21:57 We were talking because we're both Michigan boys.
21:59 You should be doing, of course, Motown music, but you're doing jazz.
22:04 Is that something you always--?
22:05 It's all the same.
22:06 My uncles played for Motown.
22:07 They were both musicians, and that's how I got started, just kind of following in their footsteps.
22:11 So Motown kind of follows the jazz era anyway, so it kind of just goes hand in hand.
22:15 There it is right there.

23:05 There is a term that more and more people are becoming familiar with, and it's the petrodollar.
23:09 Because of what China's doing in other countries, can you explain what this is and what's going on?
23:14 Okay, so to kind of summarize it, the petrodollar was what we used to replace the gold standard
23:22 when we went off of the gold standard in '71.
23:25 By '73, we shook hands with Saudi Arabia and the petro nations to make sure that they would use only U.S. dollars
23:32 in trade internationally for that of petro.
23:35 So this gave us a stronghold all over the world when it came to our currency dominance
23:40 because they would have to go through us to get to them.
23:44 And that was honestly, that was a handshake deal.
23:47 You're not being facetious.
23:48 It really was just a handshake.
23:50 Absolutely. Not only was it a handshake, but it was something that has given us dominance since the '70s.
23:57 And here we are in 2023, and for the first time ever, that's being jeopardized
24:04 because China right now sees an opportunity.
24:07 The current administration is very anti-petro, if you would.
24:11 And then we saw China go to Saudi Arabia and then do a diplomatic approach
24:17 when they brought Iran and Saudi Arabia to the table together in peace negotiations.
24:23 And then also immediately following that, we saw for the first time the yuan being exchanged for petro out of Saudi Arabia.
24:32 So, I mean, this is a huge game changer, and it's something that everybody is going to feel eventually.
24:39 Isn't India a little involved in this in a way too with the petro dollar?
24:43 Aren't they trying to advance in that area?
24:45 Not only India, but I mean, there are many nations around the Middle East.
24:50 The more you look into this, the more you're going to find that it is a rabbit hole that you're going to tumble down.
24:56 And the likely outcome here is that we are no longer going to reserve our currency as the petro standard,
25:03 and that is going to possibly jeopardize--not possibly, but it will jeopardize--our currency as the reserve currency of the world.
25:11 And the big problem with that is we've got so much debt. What keeps us afloat is the fact that we're number one.
25:17 But what if we weren't number one? I mean, Mike, I'm sure you probably would have concerns about that.
25:22 Right. Yeah. And so if that's happening, if the dollar is weakening around the world, which it appears like it is,
25:28 how is gold or what do you recommend, what is a way to protect yourself?
25:32 Well, the reason why gold--in uncertain times, the only certain thing is gold.
25:38 And the reason why is because you go back as far as you want, gold has always been a standard of money worldwide,
25:45 not just in our country, but, you know, there's no way that we're going to find in our lifetimes or the next gold not being a standard of money.
25:54 And therefore, if you retreat and put money into something like gold, you know it's going to be there no matter what happens to the currency that, you know, your country provides to your citizens.
26:06 Well, I know that you talk about just--when you say gold, but I know that there are a lot of different options and a lot of different things that you can buy,
26:14 whether it's physical gold or whatever it is. If people want to learn more on what the right thing to buy is, not just gold, but how to buy it, how do you do that?

27:46 Young people have so many hardships facing them in today's world. Mental health therapist and author, Erica Tracino, is here to talk about her book and how it might be able to help those seeking self-acceptance.
27:59 Welcome, Erica. Thank you for being here.
28:01 Thank you so much for having me.
28:02 Absolutely. So this is an incredible concept. This was born out of your work as a therapist.
28:09 Yes.
28:10 And you were working with young people and noticing, hey, there's a trend going on here that these young people are really, really struggling with self-esteem.
28:17 Yes, that is my passion. I specialize in eating disorders and body image and it's such a hard topic to talk about.
28:24 Absolutely.
28:25 So trying to find something that's relatable in a different way makes it a little bit easier to talk about.
28:30 Definitely. Okay, so tell me about the book because the book was born out of this work.
28:35 Yes.
28:36 Tell me what the story is and just give me a little insight.
28:39 Of course. So my book is about three flower friends that are going through their own insecurities about different aspects of their bloom, like most of us can relate to.
28:48 And so through that process, not only acknowledging their insecurity, but then they're learning that other people have different perspectives of their beauty.
28:56 And that in this garden, it looks more beautiful when we have variety and that we all don't look the same.
29:02 Look, this is such a great story because, I mean, as you were saying that the word bloom just makes me think when you're a young person and you're growing and you're blooming and you're blossoming.
29:13 And maybe sometimes there can be some kind of growing pains or some changes that you weren't expecting.
29:19 So if you don't mind, can you open up the book for us so we can maybe see a little bit of what is in there?
29:24 Because I'm a new mom, I have a baby, and for me, looking at these beautiful illustrations, that's what another thing about the book being so great is that it has a great story, some beautiful illustrations.
29:38 This is something that so many young people are going to be able to open up and really just relate to and enjoy.
29:44 So you have an incredible event coming up this weekend where people are going to be able to come out in person.
29:50 Yes, I'm so excited.
29:51 Yeah, tell me all about it.
29:53 So this Saturday we're going to be at Seed House and it's from 9 to 12.
29:57 I'll be doing multiple readings.
29:59 We have a really fun coloring activity that we'll be providing.
30:03 We have a great DJ.
30:05 I mean, we have just lots of events.
30:07 Bring people out.
30:08 We love the community aspect.
30:10 We have a lot of really great sponsors also.

31:12 I mean, social media is.
31:14 It really changes how we see ourselves, see other people, and it's good to get back to the basics of what our beauty is all about.
31:21 Definitely.
31:22 So this is going to be great because you're at Seed House, which again ties right into the theme of the bloom and all of that great kind of theme that you have for the book, which is really beautiful.
31:34 And I love the idea that this is about variety.
31:38 Having different flowers in the garden makes the garden all the more beautiful.
