00:00 In the jungles of Negeri Sembilan lies a small animal shelter known as Cherish Life Home.

00:06 This shelter is run by Winnie Lau, a 67-year-old retired nurse.

00:11 Where once she cared for patients in a hospital, today Lau cares for almost 200 dogs and cats at this animal shelter.

00:24 They are all strays who have nowhere else to go.

00:28 For Lau, it all started when she agreed to a simple request by a security guard in her housing area.

00:34 Later, when he resigned, he asked if she would take over the job of feeding the strays in the area.

00:54 And once more, she agreed.

00:57 Besides feeding them, she is also a part of the Traff Neuter Release Program,

01:01 but it was the abused and injured ones that distressed her the most.

01:05 She rescued some of them and placed them in an animal shelter where she volunteered,

01:10 before starting Cherish Life Home in 2010.

01:15 Life is also precious, you know.

01:19 And I was thinking like, if we are to rescue and all that, let people know we cherish them also.

01:28 So I was thinking like, cherish, cherish a life.

01:33 So that's why I named it Cherish Life, and then it's our home.

01:40 Admittedly, running this home is tough.

01:43 Having sufficient funds for food and medicine is a constant worry.

01:47 Yet, she finds her fulfillment in seeing the animals thrive within the safe confines of the shelter,

01:54 away from the dangers of the streets.

01:56 Here, the cats and dogs live in spacious, partitioned spaces,

02:01 have dedicated playtimes, and enjoy the clean air and lush greenery.

02:07 I prefer not to have my location out,

02:12 because if they start dumping dogs or cats or whatever, it's dangerous.

02:20 Because this is a forest, jungle area, there's no body around.

02:27 So if you dump your dogs here, or even puppies, they will get killed, you know,

02:34 by wild dogs and wild boars.

02:38 For Lau, the animals of the shelter are more than just rescues.

02:43 They are all my children. They are all my children.

02:48 Very cute, aren't they all?

02:50 Once, she nursed ailing humans, but today Lau is devoted to caring for these animals.

03:00 Be kind to all living things.

03:04 Not only to stray dogs or stray cats.

03:09 They are also part of the community.
