00:00 The 49ers just restructured Javon Hargrave's contract to free up major cap space for 2024.
00:07 According to overthecap.com, "Hargrave converted $7.675 million in salary to a bonus in 2024
00:15 to free up $6.14 million in cap room.
00:20 His cap charge increased by $1.535 million in every future year."
00:26 That means Javon Hargrave's cap number in 2024 dropped to $9.27 million, which is completely
00:35 manageable and now the Niners have freed up a bunch of cap space to sign other players.
00:41 In addition, that means that Hargrave's cap number next year has gone up and will be $28.1
00:50 million.
00:51 Does that number kind of sound familiar?
00:53 And if they want to cut him for whatever reason, they would eat $24.8 million of dead cap space.
01:01 Does that kind of sound familiar?
01:03 It's like they just put themselves in the same exact position they got themselves out
01:08 of with Eric Armstead.
01:11 Last year, the 49ers restructured Eric Armstead's contract to lower his cap number significantly
01:20 for 2023 when the 49ers were all in.
01:25 And it sounded like a great idea.
01:26 It just in 2024, his cap number was $28 million and it was way too much for him.
01:32 And they asked him to take a pay cut and he refused.
01:36 Who's to say that won't happen next year with Javon Hargrave?
01:38 He'll be 32.
01:39 He hasn't exactly lightened it up on the 49ers.
01:42 And will they really want him to play on a $28.1 million cap number?
01:48 They didn't want Armstead to.
01:50 So it's interesting.
01:51 Is this how the Niners do business?
01:53 They restructure a player's contract.
01:55 They ask him to, I mean, they understand the issue that you want cap space now and less
02:00 cap space later.
02:02 And then when later comes around, you go to the player and ask him to cut his salary.
02:05 Is that even fair?
02:06 So I don't know.
02:08 Did the Niners learn their lesson with Eric Armstead?
02:10 It appears they did not.
02:12 Maybe this is just how the Niners do business.
02:14 They restructure, they put themselves in a bad situation in the future, and then they
02:18 ask the player to get them out of the bad situation and the player refuses.
02:22 And they just eat a bunch of dead cap space and spread it out over two years with a June
02:26 1st designation.
02:29 I don't know.
02:30 This isn't the best news.
02:31 I mean, it's great that they created some cap space, but you'd like them to have restructured
02:34 someone in their 20s.
02:38 You'd like them to show that they learned something from the Eric Armstead debacle.
02:43 But they didn't.
