00:00 There's more than one that wields the hammer.
00:02 Here's a look at the Diamond Select Marvel Select Beta Ray Bill Special Collectors Edition
00:07 Action Figure.
00:29 It's an all new Marvel Select Action Figure and it's a big one.
00:32 Beta Ray Bill has arrived with his Hammer Stormbreaker.
00:35 Standing approximately 8.5 inches tall with crest, Bill wears his outfit from the 2021
00:40 miniseries and includes his hammer and a spinning version of the same hammer.
00:44 Featuring 16 points of articulation and a detailed paint application, it comes with
00:48 display ready Select Figure packaging designed by Yuri Ting, sculpted by Gentle Giant Studios.
00:55 Just before Beta brings the Storm, let's grab the tape measure and see how tall the figure
00:58 stands.
00:59 I'd like to thank the folks over at Diamond Select by the way that did provide this sample
01:02 of the Marvel Select Beta Ray Bill that we could have a look at this review.
01:05 The figure is available in stores, comic book stores, and hey, online as well if you're
01:10 interested to get this one for yourself.
01:11 Including the crest that's on top of his head, the figure stands at about 9.5 inches
01:15 in height.
01:16 Our Beta Ray Bill is 24 centimeters tall.
01:19 A World War Hulk would be an ideal figure for comparisons.
01:21 Sadly though, he's somewhere stuck in storage.
01:24 What I do have though is an equally large sized figure.
01:27 Here's what he looks like with a very old Thing.
01:29 Thing from a size standpoint, obviously you can see he's a little bit shorter than Beta
01:33 Ray Bill.
01:34 Just recently we also had a look at a couple of other Marvel Select figures.
01:37 Here's what he looks like with Captain America.
01:39 Here's what he also looks like with Mr. Fantastic.
01:41 Mentioning earlier about bringing the Storm, thanks to Diamond Select, Beta Ray Bill does
01:45 in fact get two variations of Stormbreaker, his trusty hammer.
01:49 First one, a default.
01:50 It's cast here nicely in gold plastic.
01:52 It's actually honestly a lot lighter than I was expecting it to be.
01:55 And then there's a loop on the end that you can actually carry it around.
01:57 While he doesn't have a holstered section, a clip, a hook for example, that can store
02:01 Stormbreaker that way, he does though have at least the means by one gripping hand on
02:05 this side, while the other hand is a gestured hand.
02:08 Getting though the hammer into his hand is a little harder to do, just because the plastic
02:12 that they're using here for the hands is fairly thick, fairly rigid.
02:17 I did in fact have to heat the hand and since of course the time that I've been talking
02:20 away about this, the plastic has cooled just a little bit.
02:23 But he does have the means of course to hold the hammer in one side.
02:26 I mean, it would be really disappointing if he didn't even have that.
02:30 One thing he also comes in clue with, which is very cool, we did in fact look at a Thor
02:34 many, many moons ago.
02:35 Unfortunately, I don't even have that Thor anymore, that had something very similar to
02:39 this, although his was Mjolnir.
02:41 Stormbreaker also comes with a spinning variety here.
02:44 And while you can easily identify the hammer in one spot, all the other versions of the
02:48 hammer are slightly more translucent.
02:50 They have added though a little bit of gold to get the idea across that of course it's
02:54 the spinning hammer.
02:55 Instead of actually holding it in the way that he's holding it right now, what you'll
02:58 do though is you'll take the hammer out of his hand, going back to the idea that his
03:02 hands are a little bit harder of a plastic, and then you'll take this part and you'll
03:05 basically clip it into his hand like this.
03:09 Now you can also have this facing forward as well, but obviously for how much diameter
03:13 this is going to be taking up, it's probably a lot easier just to have it displayed on
03:16 the side of the figure instead.
03:18 I really like the look of that.
03:19 That gives some extra interesting stuff to look at.
03:22 Shelf appeal.
03:23 Shelf appeal is always the thing I talk about usually in these reviews.
03:26 If you can have something on a shelf with a figure that automatically somebody's walking
03:30 past the shelf and it just catches their eye, that's shelf appeal.
03:34 And it definitely does have that.
03:35 I like the look of that quite a lot.
03:36 It's not again very heavy at all.
03:38 I mean it's just a little bit tad heavier than obviously the hammer on its own, but
03:42 it's not a very heavy plastic.
03:43 I mean there's some weight to it, but not enough where I feel like it's going to start
03:47 to droop the figure's arms or shoulders for that matter.
03:50 Nice little effect.
03:51 Let's move those off onto the side.
03:54 The figure itself though of Beta Ray Bill is a fantastic likeness of the character.
03:58 One thing he does have obviously is the crest on the top of his head.
04:01 You may notice already for the fact that the crest is slightly swayed to the side and it
04:07 sort of has kind of a curl effect to it.
04:09 Instead of actually being just straight, it actually is, as you can see, sort of a more
04:13 waved effect.
04:14 It really looks good on this.
04:15 I mean looking at the crest on top of his head, it kind of reminds me of that Red Mohawk
04:18 guy from Road Warrior.
04:20 What about that for a comparison?
04:22 Head sculpt wise, it certainly doesn't look like the guy from Road Warrior.
04:25 As you can see, it sort of has again Beta Ray Bill's classic looking face.
04:28 It is though open.
04:29 One of the unfortunate things about this figure is that he doesn't have any mouth articulation.
04:35 Unfortunately by also adding mouth articulation, as good as it may sound on paper, it would
04:38 mean also that you would break up this really nice sculpt that they've done so well on the
04:41 figure's face.
04:42 Because obviously there would have to have been a hinge there that would allow the mouth
04:45 to open and close.
04:46 I suppose greater sacrifices have to be made and in order to get a better looking head
04:50 sculpt like this, a sacrifice of like a hinge joint, for example, in the lower jaw had to
04:55 be given away.
04:56 He does have little wings there on the sides of his helmet.
04:58 That's nicely done there as well.
05:00 Really isn't a lot of paint.
05:01 There's only paint really just on his teeth, his tongue, and his eyes.
05:04 I suppose they probably could have gone in there and outlined the eyes so that they pop
05:08 a little bit more than what they do.
05:09 But I mean, let's face facts.
05:10 The paint on this guy is really quite good, especially with the way they've done the
05:13 crest here.
05:14 It's darkening the coloring more closer to his helmet, making a much brighter red
05:18 along the top end of it.
05:20 Similar to the guy from Road Warrior.
05:22 One thing that's also interesting about this figure is the fact that he does also have
05:25 a cape.
05:26 The way the cape's attached is not by actually the back of his body.
05:28 I was expecting there would be a peg, for example, like right here that would then probably
05:32 fit into a hole right about here.
05:34 But that's not the case at all.
05:35 Instead, actually, the cape has freedom to move on its own.
05:38 But it's a very weighted cape.
05:40 It does seem to plug on the front here by these circular discs, similar to any other
05:44 Thor, for example.
05:46 The thing about it, though, is it does almost look like you'd be able to attach these.
05:49 If you look and I move his arms out of the way, it does look like basically it's a
05:52 post system that runs from the top here, basically where the cap of this would be.
05:57 It runs through what would be the cape.
05:58 It then runs through what would be the straps of his uniform, and then it plugs into the
06:02 torso area.
06:03 While it does, again, look like you could move this, even detach this if you wanted
06:07 to, I would just imagine the chaos that would be caused by just all these things falling
06:11 off the figure.
06:12 Plus, too, this strap really does need these in order to stay in place.
06:15 So there does seem, I would imagine there would be some means to probably remove the
06:19 cape.
06:20 I'm just not going to remove it, though.
06:21 I just like the idea that, I mean, Beta Ray Bale needs to have himself a cape like any
06:25 other Thor, for that matter.
06:26 Coloring it again on this guy really is quite good.
06:28 You get mostly the dark black here for the top of his torso, but painted again very nicely.
06:33 There is the M from the gold.
06:34 You got the gold there on the tops of the shoulders.
06:37 Similar style of gold also there in his arms, and a little bit of blue also there as well.
06:41 The blue, the black, and the gold work really well in this figure.
06:45 He does also have a belt here on the front, which, sort of like the cape, seems like a
06:48 separate piece.
06:49 Like, if you're looking at this, for example, there's a little bit of shifting when this
06:53 is getting moved around, which I suppose is probably a good thing, as opposed to this
06:56 being permanently in place.
06:58 It does, it will give him a little bit more freedom when it comes, for example, to him
07:01 rotating his waist, that if you were to, say, glue this, I mean, obviously this would be
07:05 not able to move as much.
07:07 I like the lower end of his feet, or like the way they've sculpted his legs, for example.
07:12 For example, you've got like the top, I guess the top, would this be the top of his
07:15 boot?
07:16 I guess this really would be the top of his boot, but the top of his thigh, before it
07:19 sort of gets to this section here, again, really like the use of this particular blue.
07:24 They really did choose a nice blue for this.
07:26 Of course, you got your larger clunkier looking boots that he also has as well, where the
07:29 tops kind of look like Hawkeye's mask.
07:33 These by the way are not the softest of plastics, not that it really needs to be either.
07:37 I mean, the figure doesn't seem to have any articulation problems at all.
07:41 He's nice and durable as well.
07:42 No ankle looseness at all.
07:44 Anything for the figure that would be causing this character chaos, when again, getting
07:48 this guy on the shelf, you won't have that problem at all.
07:50 It seems like all the joints, even like the ankle pivots, are nice and tight on this figure.
07:54 So let's run through, going all the way back to the top here, the figure's articulation.
07:58 So Beta Ray Bill is going to have a ball joint in the head.
08:01 I mean, you would expect probably that there's not going to be as much that you can really
08:04 do with it because he has the cape on the sides.
08:06 But really, I mean, there's enough space here and here that you can still rock the
08:11 head back and forth.
08:12 You can almost, almost rotate it all the way around.
08:14 And you can also move it up and move it down.
08:16 There's just enough to work with there.
08:19 As for the arms, the arms come out, they're on hinge joints, easily being able to pull
08:23 out a 90 degree angle bend.
08:24 The thing that they're a little bit more limited with though, is when you get around
08:27 to moving the arms forward and back, just because the shoulders, the shoulders aren't
08:30 soft plastic, certainly not, it's not soft enough plastic that they're going to move
08:34 out of the way if you want to move the arms.
08:36 So that's about as far forward as you can get them.
08:38 That's as far back as you can get them.
08:41 There's a swivel there at the bicep.
08:42 The figure only has a single hinge, single hinge in the elbow, but the forearm also does
08:46 rotate there as well.
08:48 Hands do also rotate all the way around.
08:50 There's a hinge back and forth there too.
08:52 Now again, going back to this, and probably one of the reasons why they didn't fully commit
08:55 to the idea of adhering everything down, because the way that they've designed the straps,
09:00 you can still very freely move Beta Ray Bill's upper torso, because these are separate from
09:05 the rest of his body, because this is also separate from the rest of his body.
09:09 There doesn't seem to be the complications that would go along with everything being
09:12 like again, permanently attached to the figure's torso.
09:15 So he does have like an upper torso ball joint.
09:17 You can move that quite easily around.
09:19 There's also a secondary ball joint that's a little harder to see because it's just
09:22 behind the belt.
09:23 As for his legs, they don't seem like they're unratcheted joints.
09:26 Every once in a while though, as I'm moving them, I almost feel like I'm snapping what
09:30 would be a ratcheted joint, but they seem to be just on regular hinge, actually ball
09:33 joints you can see right there.
09:34 Legs move forward, legs move back, the swivel of course at the top of the thigh.
09:39 There is a single hinge.
09:41 I really was thinking initially that this guy would have a double hinge, but he only
09:43 has a single hinge in his knee.
09:45 He does also have a rotation there in the lower leg.
09:47 And then again, going back to his ankles, they rock back and forth this way and they
09:50 rock this way as well.
09:53 I don't know if I would say this guy is top favorite Marvel select figures that we've
09:57 gotten in the recent releases.
10:00 He certainly does compare things nicely.
10:03 I'm just going to slide this guy back over here and bring in Captain America.
10:05 Captain America set the bar pretty high and he still is right now one of my favorites
10:09 Marvel select figures.
10:10 Beta Ray Bill comes pretty close though.
10:12 I mean, he's big, he's oversized.
10:14 And obviously, when you're looking at figures like this, they tend to be of the same price
10:18 point.
10:19 So again, it goes to really show that Diamond Select, even though they are releasing big,
10:22 small figures, they're usually generally priced around the same price.
10:27 Interesting also as well that Beta Ray Bill does come included with two versions of Stormbreaker.
10:30 One the default, one just the regular version of the hammer, and then one a spinning variety.
10:34 There's a lot of certainly mileage, a lot of extra plastic that went into this release.
10:39 That if you were a fan of Beta Ray Bill, not that those would be then the direction, the
10:42 kind of the things that nudge in the direction want to pick this up.
10:44 But there's certainly a lot of cool selling points for why you'd want to get this figure
10:47 as part of your collection.
10:49 Spinning now on turntable is Beta Ray Bill with a spinning now Stormbreaker.
10:52 The figure though, as already mentioned, is available in comic book stores or online.
10:56 The asking price of Beta Ray Bill is the same asking price that Diamond always asks for
11:00 their Marvel Select figures, around $30 US.
11:03 Granted, that is going to be a little bit more here in Canada.
11:06 Expect more to pay about $45 to $50.
11:08 I think usually the last time I went to a comic book store, they were selling their
11:11 Marvel Select figures for $54.
11:14 So it's a little bit more than just the conversion alone.
11:17 The beauty though of Marvel Select is always the thing I always talk about is whether you
11:20 are collecting say a Beta Ray Bill that's bigger, bulkier figure, or you go back to
11:24 a slightly smaller frame with say Captain America or Mr. Fantastic, the price is always
11:28 going to be the same.
11:29 I don't know how Diamond is making back their money.
11:31 Because you would imagine though, the cost of tooling Beta Ray Bill, the more materials
11:35 are obviously required not only for him, but also as well the two variations of Stormbreaker,
11:39 they got to be making that money back.
11:40 Because again, like as a collector, it's one of the best user friendly, at least budget
11:44 friendly collections out there.
11:46 Because no matter what figure you're buying from Diamond, they're always going to be around
11:49 that same price.
11:50 I wish Marvel Legends could be doing the same.
11:52 But what do you guys think of Beta Ray Bill?
11:53 Let me know down below in the comment section.
11:55 Have you already had the chance to pick this figure up?
11:57 If you haven't, what do you guys think of him?
11:59 Is he a worthy candidate?
12:01 Not only for bearing of course one of the hammers, but also as well to be a figure that's
12:05 on your shelf.
12:06 Let me know what you guys think of him.
12:08 In the meantime as well, I'd like to thank the folks over at Diamond Select that did
12:10 provide this sample of the Marvel Select Beta Ray Bill.
12:14 Great looking figure that we could have the chance to have a look at this review.
12:16 Speaking though of reviews, if you guys don't mind doing me a solid, if you guys like the
12:20 one you just finished watching, why not throw it a like?
