00:00 All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots beat podcast
00:13 here on the CLNS Media Network presented by our wonderful friends over at prize picks
00:19 and game time today. We'll hear more from them later, but we are back. It is back to
00:24 a two man show today. Brian Hines with Alex Barth as always. Thanks, everyone, for listening
00:32 and following along with our draft shows over the weekend and the dual shows with Taylor
00:38 and Mike. We really enjoyed those. Hope you really enjoyed those as well. But we're back
00:43 to man regular Pat's beat here today. We're going the draft is obviously over. So we hope
00:49 you guys have lots of questions about the draft. We're going to turn it over to you
00:53 guys and let you ask any questions you have in a little bit. But we do have some housekeeping
00:58 items to do beforehand. And we can start with the news of the week. The exciting news, the
01:03 news. I think we all wanted to see this offseason. And that was a contract extension to Christian
01:08 Barmore as they continue to kind of take care of their own guys and this draft and develop
01:13 a team now that they are now under Elliot Wolfe and Gerard Mayo. So Christian Barmore
01:19 four year, 84 million dollar deal can max out at 92 million dollars, I believe, with
01:23 the incentives. So that was obviously at the top of all of our checklists after his monster
01:29 year last year. So that was very good to see them kind of take care of Barmore there on
01:33 Monday. Yeah, that was the one extension they really had to get done this offseason. I mean,
01:38 Ramon, Dr. Stevenson will see, but he's also running back. So that's just inherently different.
01:42 Barmore's a playmaker. He's a difference maker on the defensive side of the ball. It's a
01:46 defensive line that's going to undergo a lot of change in the next year or two with with
01:50 some older players, guys who's lesser players whose contracts are up. So. It was a contract
01:56 they needed to get done. It's good to see him get it done. Yeah. Yeah. Once he stayed
01:59 healthy last year and you saw his pass rush ability kind of mimic what it was, his rookie
02:04 year and then he took that step forward with his run defense.
02:07 Right. He posted a career high at run stops. We heard the Marcus Covington talk all the
02:11 time how that area developed, called him a complete three down player. So that was kind
02:16 of a no no brainer to try to extend him before, as you said, reach free agency. I think he's
02:21 the only defensive lineman under contract now besides Keon White on his rookie deal
02:26 under contract for next year. So Sam Roberts is the other one. Sam Roberts, too. So, yeah,
02:32 you needed him. You needed him around. And that was good to kind of take care of him
02:36 there. Yeah, absolutely. Like you said, it continues that that draft and develop thing.
02:41 And yeah. Yeah. So that's. Oh, sorry. I remember what I was going to say. Your point about
02:45 him being healthy. That's a big one because I don't think he was ever really healthy in
02:50 twenty two, maybe at the very beginning of the year. But you remember he missed a lot
02:54 of time at that knee injury, came back, didn't look right. Now that you saw it last year,
02:58 he's finally healthy. You could see what he's fully able to do now. He's got to stay healthy.
03:01 That would be the big if. But if he can, I think he's totally going to be worth this
03:05 contract. Yep. One hundred percent. So that was the big news again that broke on Monday.
03:11 Good to get far more extended there. We had a few signings. We had a pass rusher from
03:18 the Giants who I'm blanking on his name. It also starts with an X like he's the only player
03:23 who's Shane. It's like Zimmy is a mind. I think the minds only player, I believe, whose
03:30 last name starts with an X in the NFL. So they didn't draft an edge guy last weekend.
03:37 So they bring in exams who played under outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins with the Giants.
03:41 So a little edge depth there. And then we have our kicker. We have our competition kicker
03:47 for Chad Ryland. That was something we talked about a lot. People said, are they going to
03:52 draft one? UDFA. We always kind of said, you know, they'll probably going to go with this
03:56 veteran route. So Joey Sly gets cut by the commanders a few days ago and they add him
04:02 here for that for that veteran and for some competition for Chad Ryland. Yeah. And a veteran
04:09 always made sense. I know some people wanted them to draft a kicker, sign a UDFA kicker,
04:13 but there's just rookie kickers are an unknown.
04:16 That's, that's what they always are. And that's what Chad Ryland became last year. He was
04:19 an unknown because he put up much better numbers in college. It was just something about being
04:23 in the NFL altered that. So adding another rookie, isn't the guy you bring in for competition.
04:29 That's you're taking another long shot. You want to bring in a guy that maybe has less
04:32 of a stealing, but it's definitely going to be more sturdy. And, and Sly's a good example
04:37 of that. I'm 82% career on field goals, 88% on extra points. Like he's not an all pro,
04:45 but he's been pretty steady throughout his whole career. And he's a guy that ideally,
04:50 you know, you, you would think Chad Ryland can beat out, but if he continues to struggle,
04:56 like you do have an NFL kicker on the roster, maybe not a top end NFL kicker, but you have
05:00 an NFL kicker on the roster. Yep. Yeah. I think he was like 26 a sly in the league and
05:06 field goal made percentage. So, uh, but that's where you're kind of shopping at this time
05:10 of the year, right? You're not going to go out and just sign like a Justin Tucker obviously,
05:14 uh, or someone, but he is an NFL, NFL kicker. And he has that. I think you raise if Ryland
05:20 doesn't bounce back, you probably raise the floor in that room a little bit more than
05:25 obviously what you had last year with Ryland, uh, in, in his struggles, but it's going to
05:29 be, look, it just sends the message. Like you get him under the pressure of competition
05:34 and maybe it doesn't end up being slide. Maybe they end up on the other side. You know, the,
05:38 the Titans had a couple of kickers in camp last year, none of them worked out. So what
05:41 do they do? They go and they trade for Nick Fulk. So it could be another thing where you
05:46 added the pressure Ryland didn't rise to it, but you also don't think slides good enough
05:50 in, in there in the market for a kicker, common roster cuts.
05:53 Yeah. Yeah. I mean, over the weekend with these draft picks, how many times did we see
05:57 or hear Gerard Mayo say, we want to create as much competition on the roster as possible.
06:02 He said it with the quarterbacks. He said it after they drafted, you know, late in Robinson,
06:07 you know, create competition on the interior of that offensive line. So, uh, they want
06:10 to create as much competition as possible. And obviously when, you know, Chad struggled
06:14 like that last year, that's a spot you're going to naturally want to, uh, create some
06:18 competition and obviously not writing Chad Ryland off, right? Like there's still, as
06:23 you said, in college, there's still a lot of potential there. We saw, you know, a glimpse
06:26 of his last year, like, like the Denver kick, but, uh, you know, just, you need to bring
06:31 in a veteran there and create some competition there. So that comes in the form of Joey slide.
06:36 We'll watch them go at it, uh, throughout the spring and the summer. And, uh, so that
06:41 was the signings. That was all the, you know, signings from the past week. We did have,
06:45 uh, we spoke to, uh, Michael windu today, Juwan Bentley today, uh, Ramondre earlier
06:51 in the week, as well as Joshua who J where he's going by Joshua this year to honor his
06:56 dad. Um, you kind of said Ramondre with the contract, he said he was interested in re
07:02 re signing with the team that might be the next extension, uh, in line potentially. Uh,
07:08 the other news I'd say from, you know, speaking with those four was, uh, Mike on when you
07:12 said that he was brought back with the expectation. He talked about it with the team during negotiations
07:17 that he's going to play right tackle, which we kind of saw that coming. It seemed to be
07:22 trending in that direction, but just kind of getting a confirmation there from big Mike
07:26 today that he's going to at least at least start the year at right.
07:29 Tackle is also interesting to hear him say he was asked if he thinks he could play left
07:33 tackle. And he said, no, not right away, which again, hammers home the point. It's really
07:37 not that easy to move right tackles over to left tackle. And I don't think he wants to
07:42 be in that situation. I don't think he wants himself put in that situation. Um, uh, opposed
07:47 to playing where he's comfortable. Yup. Yeah. It's a tough spot. I think he said he would
07:52 probably need like another off season full of, of training and technique and everything.
07:57 So, uh, just something kind of interesting to keep in mind with their brain and Caden
08:01 Wallace in here and hoping to flip him from the right, uh, to the left side there. But
08:06 anything else from those availabilities with those four guys that, um, I think it was pretty
08:11 much it. That was, yeah, that was pretty much the big news, but, uh, yeah.
08:16 So that was kind of the news that trickled in, uh, over the last week after the draft.
08:23 So, uh, we could kind of turn this over to you guys now and any questions you have about
08:28 the draft or the roster, or maybe looking ahead towards training camp competitions,
08:32 anything on your mind, you can kind of fire away and we'll try to get as many as possible.
08:37 You want to hear from our friends at prize picks where people get questions in and then

09:57 All right, let's start right here. We talked about Keon White being kind of the long term
10:04 now defensive lineman alongside Christian Barmore. What are you expecting from him this
10:07 season? Definitely a step up. I think, I think I don't know if it's under the radar or just
10:15 kind of forgettable that he did suffer that concussion like midpoint last year and it
10:19 seemed like it took him a while to kind of regain his footing there at midpoint of the
10:23 year and then he kind of had a good, I think he came on a little bit more at the end of
10:28 the year. So I'm more interested in how they kind of use him. What's their plan for him
10:33 going forward? Is he going to be more like a standup edge guy or hand in the dirt or
10:37 is he like a standup edge guy on early downs and they bump him inside to, you know, be
10:42 an inside pass rusher on, you know, third down there. So yeah, you definitely want to
10:47 see more from him obviously in year two, but I don't know. I'm interested in kind of the
10:52 game plan for him as well. I'm with you. I think he's at his best as a hand down rusher,
10:57 but you're right. That injury seemed to really cause Mary, he had an amazing preseason, played
11:02 well in the opener against the Eagles and then kind of got banged up and it seemed like
11:05 he never really recovered. So kind of like we talked about far more, you hope fully healthy.
11:10 You see, you see some more consistency from him. Any trade value for Cole stranger, Juju
11:15 Smith Schuster.
11:17 No,
11:18 I, I don't know about Cole strange. I just, cause the injury you might, if they could
11:27 get a seventh for John, who Smith, you might be able to get like a seventh or a pick swap
11:32 for Juju Smith Schuster. It's nothing significant. It's nothing massive.
11:36 I think the big thing, if you're really looking for a place for Juju, I'd be watching that
11:40 Rashi rice respect suspension coming with Kansas city. That seems like the logical place.
11:46 Obviously he was with them two years ago. So yeah, maybe you get a late round pick swap
11:51 for them. You obviously have to eat most of the money. Cole strange though would be an
11:55 interesting one just cause he can't stay healthy. He can't stay on the field. I don't know if
11:59 a team would take the chance on that.
12:02 Oh, this is an interesting one is the lack of impact UDF a signings from this front office
12:08 inexperienced. Then he named some of the players that we liked who were UDF phase. We don't
12:15 know what players they liked and they didn't like it. I wouldn't say, you know, maybe they
12:19 look at the guys they signed as more impact than some of the guys listed there. I would
12:23 disagree, but, um, I don't think they went out of their way to get lesser than UDF phase.
12:29 I wouldn't categorize it like that. I don't know why they would do that. Um, you know,
12:35 I think it's pretty clear. They hammered certain positions, linebacker defensive back. I think
12:41 the running back and tight end that they signed to Sean Fenwick and, um, I'm blanking on the
12:46 tight ends.
12:47 Warren Warren. Yeah.
12:48 Dylan Warren or Jaron Warren or something. Jordan Warren, something like that. Like those
12:52 are both guys that will have a chance to make the team. So, right. You mentioned there's
12:56 a couple of tight ends mentioned here. Brevin span forward, um, was one will span forward.
13:02 Can't block Warren's a blocker and they needed a blocking tight end. I Dylan Johnson and
13:07 Deshaun Fenwick, I would argue Dylan Johnson's a, a better play. You know, you talk about
13:11 some of the tackles here. It, the, the one, the guy they signed a Hunter or Henry, sorry,
13:19 Zuri Henry is a true swing tackle. Most of these guys are not true swing tackles.
13:25 They stuck on one side or the other. So if they wanted that true ability, that experience
13:30 to play on both a guy to play on both sides, then that's the kind of guy you're going to
13:34 target. It seemed, I wouldn't say it was, it was impact, lack of impact, UDF a signings.
13:40 I think they're just targeting certain guys. It's not to say that there's guys on this
13:43 list I wouldn't want, you know, Frank crumb, I think would have been great. Dylan Johnson,
13:47 I think would have been great. Um, and, uh, Gabriel Murphy, those would be the three guys
13:51 I'd circle is like, yeah, I probably would have been in on, but it's also, you know,
13:56 you get to bidding on these guys and they may have just not seen, especially a guy like
14:01 Dylan Johnson who may not make the team.
14:03 Um, or a guy like Gabriel Murphy who may not make the team. They may look at it and be
14:07 like, this guy isn't a roster lock for us. We don't want to give them a massive bonus.
14:12 So there there's any number of reasons that could have happened. I, I wouldn't lack of
14:16 impact UDF a signings a weird way to put it. Yeah. It also seemed like the league and honestly
14:22 the media too, as a whole thought like the talent, there was kind of a drop off in talent
14:26 on day three, it seemed this year. So that obviously impacts the UDF a class, probably
14:31 a weaker, like general UDF a class. So yeah. Saying like the impact UDF is it's, that's
14:37 kind of a weird way of going about it, but yeah, I think they, they hit on some guys,
14:41 some, some intriguing guys still in that mix that might fit certain roles there throughout,
14:47 throughout the summer.
14:48 Um, is it a good one? Are there any success stories of right tackle shifting the left
14:53 tackle after the draft? Not off top of my head. Hmm. There's some going the other way.
15:02 Actually Trent Brown might've been a right tackle in college. Let me look that up, but
15:06 it's not, it's not super common cause it's a tough move to make. What was, or will Nate
15:14 soldier? He came in, he was a left tackle, but they, yeah, but then he played right tackle
15:19 like his rookie year. They needed him at right tackle. Yeah. But the tight end, he was around,
15:25 he had experience blocking on both sides. That's yeah. He wasn't someone who entered
15:29 the league only with one side of experience, right? He was a little different. He was kind
15:33 of his own thing. Trent Brown was a right guard in college. I don't remember that at
15:38 all. That is a big, that's a big guard, right? Right. Guard to left tackles and outstanding
15:44 jump. So, I mean, there's one is Trent Brown. There you go. Um, what's the contingency poll
15:50 plan of Polk and Baker sucking camp? Luther burden. Luther burden. That's a little bit.
15:55 I was about to say these, this is the group for this year. Um, excuse me. It's probably,
16:01 um, it's probably hoping to get more in a Taekwondo juju. That's probably what it is
16:06 for this year. And then you go get Luther burden next year. Um, Tristan worse. He was
16:11 a right tackle and switched to left last year, I think. But Tristan works is all like a all
16:17 pro tackle as well. So, um, right back to that tackle question, but yeah, yeah. It's
16:24 Luther burden or you hope like it's one of those depth guys or K Sean booty, you know,
16:31 sizes everyone and stands out. But, uh, yeah, you're hoping those two guys don't, don't
16:36 suck in camp. Um, obviously, uh, three quarterbacks on the roster. If you had to guess, obviously
16:43 may and Jacoby, but the first Milton, yeah, I'd go Milton Milton for now.
16:49 Uh, do you think they trade for a receiver? I, I, not now. This is the next season, next
16:55 off season conversation. They just have, unless they have so many complimentary players, you
17:00 really can't add anymore. Cause guys got to play, you gotta have snaps for everybody in
17:05 less it's for a true number one, which is a guy like Iuke, which doesn't seem like it's
17:09 happening. I, they're not going to trade for anybody who's, they shouldn't trade for anybody
17:13 who's not clearly at the top of the depth chart. Yeah. Yeah. They have 11 guys. So if
17:19 you're adding a guy, it's gotta be that number one alpha. And I just don't know if those
17:23 guys are going to be available right now and if they're going to want to divvy up for those
17:27 guys right now. So, um, does Alex Austin have a legit chance at the CB to roll? He looked
17:33 good at the end of last year. Yeah, I'd say so. Uh, you know, it's going to be, we'll
17:38 see what happens with Jonathan Jones. That's the big question. Is he back on the boundary
17:42 or is he in the slot? If he's, if, if Jonathan Jones is back on the boundary, he's going
17:45 to be your CB too. But if he's in the slot, I, yeah, I think it's, you know, Alex Austin,
17:50 Marco Wilson, um, die Marcella style. Uh, uh, who's the kid they signed from Alabama
17:56 state and one of their UDF phase will mix in there. Sean Wade will probably get some
17:59 run like it's, it's a wide open competition. And even if Jonathan Jones is on the boundary,
18:05 that's the competition for the third boundary cornerback spot, which is still important.
18:09 Yeah. Isaiah Bolton too. I don't know. Did he, did he say his name? Um, no, I knew I
18:14 was forgetting somebody. Yeah. So he'll, he'll be in that mix as well. They have a lot of
18:18 like really intriguing of those kinds of depth corners, young depth corners with, uh, intriguing
18:24 kind of size physical traits. So if one of those guys or even two of those guys can kind
18:29 of take a, take a jump that that secondary, uh, is, is looking pretty good, but staying
18:33 in that secondary Marcus Jones, do you think he could make the transition back to free
18:39 safety if maybe some of those corners kind of, you know, step up and maybe move Jones
18:43 back to free safety? The one thing I wonder about, like he's small and you really need
18:51 to be able to tackle. You're the last line of defense and just his tackling ability back
18:56 there. That would be the question. If he can prove to be capable tackler, he definitely
19:01 has the speed and the ball tracking to play back there, but you have to be able to tackle
19:05 in that role. You have to be able to consistently tackle.
19:08 Yeah. What do you think about Marcellus dial back there? I saw some people floating that
19:14 out there on, on Twitter. Do you think that's something, cause he's got the ball skills
19:18 obviously. And I think he, he ran like a four, four, six. So he's got kind of the speed
19:23 to do it as well. That, that could be kind of a interesting transition. He's never really
19:27 done it. He pretty much only played on the boundary at South Carolina. So it'll just
19:32 be how he adjust. I think they'll try it, but it will be, how does he adjust to seeing
19:37 the field from back there? Yeah. Uh, 2025 mock Luther burden or offensive tackle. Yeah,
19:47 pretty much. Exactly. Um, what was it going? If you could redo one pick in the draft, who
19:53 would it be or what would it be? And who would you draft instead? I'd probably move up from
19:59 68 and get, you know, draft either, either Blake Fisher. I don't think they liked Kingsley.
20:04 I don't think they were screwing with the guys that had the injury concerns and he was
20:07 hurt last year. I would move up and draft either Blake Fisher, Blake Coleman.
20:13 That's like if we're, I guess in your points, what would you do? But if we're being realistic,
20:17 guys who I think were on their board, we know they liked Blake Fisher. We know they liked
20:20 Blake Coleman. I move her from 68 draft. One of those guys get the guy with some actual
20:24 left tackle. Not that they were true left tackles, but actually they actually have left
20:28 tackle experience in game left tackle experience. Unlike Caden Wallace. Yeah. Yeah. That's one
20:34 of my, like my one, I don't know the word. Um, or one like question about the draft is
20:40 like, were they not aggressive enough? Like we heard they wanted to try to trade up in
20:44 the first round for, you know, one of those receivers. And then did they kind of miss
20:48 that run on the pure left tackles there and in the third round. So, uh, I like Polk still
20:54 in the second round, but if you could redo one, I might try to get a little more aggressive
20:58 and go get one of those pure left tackles. So you don't have to just worry about making
21:02 that, you know, making Caden Wallace switch from the right to the left side.
21:07 Are you, are we concerned about the depth at running back? We were screwed her from
21:11 Andre goes down. I, you're not going to keep a second starting caliber running back on
21:16 a roster like this. You're just not, that's not how it works. I think Antonio Gibson solid
21:21 again. I like Fenwick who they signed as a UDFA. You still have Kevin Harris. It's fine.
21:26 They're running backs by look if losing Ramond Ray is their biggest issue this year, they're
21:29 pretty good shape. So I built, they'll, they'll make it work. They can also sit running backs.
21:35 You can add super late. Like they added Zeke last year in camp. If they feel like they
21:38 need a running another back, they'll go out and get another back. I think they're fine.
21:42 It's not the best position on their roster, but I think they're fine there.
21:44 Yeah. I was just going to pull up, you know, biz said they have 50 million in cap space
21:49 left. They could still add a running back. I just pulled up the list like Dalvin cook.
21:54 He's, he's kind of cooked, but a Rashad Penny, Joshua Kelly, Latavious Murray, Matt Rita,
22:00 cream hunt, Jerick McKinnon, uh, Brandon Bolden's out there. Melvin Gordon, like they could
22:05 go add, you know, it's nothing flashy obviously, but they could go out of veteran depth there
22:10 and free agency. Uh, if, if they needed it at some point, just like they did with Zeke
22:15 last, right. Uh, who could be a surprise cut this year? Are we counting Cole strange in
22:21 this or is it kind of obvious that a surprise at this point? That's what I'm saying.
22:29 Or juju, like you can put them both in that. Yeah. I think guys, I think who should have
22:36 the warning lights on after the draft are called strange to do some issues during Bailey's
22:40 Abbey. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know about any other surprises outside of that group. Um,
22:50 no one on defense really. Yeah. We got to get a little closer and then maybe we'll see.
22:56 Does Elliot Wolf get the GM title? I don't think they're going to give them the GM title
23:04 just cause that's not how they operate. Like they've never like craft has never had the
23:09 GM title, but I wouldn't be, I think he deserves like the de facto GM and maybe that's director
23:16 of player personnel or one of those, not director of scouting, right? Like some, some title
23:22 that kind of signals that he has control, but I don't think it's going to be the exact
23:26 GM title. He's getting the new contract and all that. Yeah. He's getting the stuff. He's
23:32 getting the stuff that matters. Uh, this is kind of a good one. What existing player won
23:39 the draft if possible, like locked up a roster spot or maybe one playing time or Austin Hooper,
23:49 I guess would be the best example of this. I'd say any of those corners, any of those
23:54 depth corners that they didn't bring in like a real true, you know, they didn't draft a
23:58 cam heart or Kyrie Jackson or Jarvis Brownlee. Um, you know, they, they definitely now have
24:05 more opportunity. Would you say chooks at left tackle or no, just cause Caden Wallace
24:10 is still a threat there theoretically. Yeah. They, they still drafted somebody with a plan
24:15 to play that position. So yeah. Um, what else do we got here? Um, uh, Ooh, this is a good
24:24 one. Actually. What role does Marte Mopu have this year? I think he's just going to be doing
24:31 a little bit of everything, which I don't know if I love that, but I think it's, he's
24:36 going to be a free safety. You're going to see him at linebacker. I think he's just going
24:40 to be kind of mix, mix and match all over the place. Yeah. This one's super interesting
24:45 just because it's not the, the, the staff that drafted him is no longer in charge. So
24:53 I'm sure bill Belichick had a plan for him. I think it may have been to let Kyle Duggar
24:56 walk and play him in that role, but bill Belichick had a plan for him. Bill Belichick's no longer
25:00 here. Does he go back to playing linebacker? Do they keep him at safety? I think Gerard
25:04 Mayo had said the plan was to keep him at safety. Does he just become a special teams
25:08 player? He does have a good skillset for that new kickoff rule. It's going to be very interesting
25:13 to see what his usage is. I don't think anything would surprise me at this point. I think it's
25:17 all on the table with him. Yeah, definitely. Kind of in that secondary, Sean Wade at free
25:26 safety. I'm more interested. Sean Wade was really good in camp in the preseason last
25:30 year when they moved him inside as a slot corner and then they lost all their boundary
25:35 corners during the season and they had to move them back outside along the boundary.
25:40 So I'm kind of interested if maybe, you know, now that you have Alex Austin and Isaiah Bolden
25:44 and maybe Marcellus Dial and Jonathan Jones, maybe he stays out on the boundary if they
25:48 give Sean Wade another look in the slot and see how that looks again. I'd rather see that
25:54 maybe over than free safety, especially now with Jonathan Jones, who I think he's entering
25:58 his age 30 season, right? Yeah. Entering his age 30 season on an expiring contract or sorry,
26:04 entering his age 31 season on an expiring contract.
26:08 You know, you got to find a long-term option in the slot. Sean Wade was at his best in
26:13 college when he was a slot corner, so that wasn't surprising to see. So maybe they give
26:15 him more run there. Yeah. Do you think the defense? All right, we'll do this one real
26:23 quick. Then we'll go to yours. And I saw us may reportedly offer Democratic job, which
26:29 player besides Tom Brady would we most want to see on the staff? We offered kind of offer
26:33 Tom Brady a job too. Yeah, this is a good question. I honestly might go West Welker
26:41 just because he's proven to be a good wide receivers coach and boy, do they need that?
26:47 You know, I guess if we're going nuts, I'd say Randy Moss cause he'd probably be a pretty
26:51 good wide receivers coach. Mike Vrabel. We talked about how much we wanted Mike Vrabel
26:57 on the staff, right? All of these is like an invite basically in the role that Matthew
27:00 Slater's in. If we're going to talk, people are like actually in coaching to Kevin Falk.
27:06 Kevin Falk did a lot at that LSU program. He'd be an interesting hire. Yeah. I still
27:12 wish last year they brought in the Garrett Blunt cause he was around and then like training
27:17 camp on that. I forget what it was called, like doing something with, it was him and
27:21 Aaron Dobson on the, like that coaching fellowship, right? And he just, he's a good vibes guy.
27:28 He would have been fun to have in the room there, but yeah, obviously it didn't happen.
27:34 But do you think the defense will be more aggressive up front this year with the blitzes?
27:39 I don't know about if they're going to be bringing more blitzes, but that's something
27:41 the Marcus Covington kind of highlighted that they are going to be more aggressive as a
27:47 whole. I think there are two keys or two things they highlighted were more turnovers and more
27:53 aggressiveness this year. So I don't know if that's just going to be them bringing the
27:57 house or maybe just letting guys like Josh Uche kind of pin their ears back more instead
28:03 of, you know, playing a more disciplined there on the edge, but they do plan. It sounds like
28:07 to be more aggressive this year. Yeah, I think so too. I just think you're going to see more
28:12 of an aggressive nature from the rush, whether it's on a blitz or not. Yeah. What about going
28:19 back to free agents and kind of that free safety, Justin Simmons? I think that's the
28:23 guy we're both still interested in. I'd absolutely take Justin Simmons. Yeah. Any other free
28:28 agents kind of from a broad point of view? I know we've talked about stuff on Gilmore
28:32 a lot and Gilmore would be the only other one I think. Yeah. I'd love Justin Simmons.
28:38 He'd be a great fit in that secondary with them, but we'll see what happens there. Um,
28:44 I just had one when will, this is kind of the big one. Everyone wants to talk to when
28:52 will may Drake may start. Will he sit the entire season? So I think he will end up starting
29:00 this year. I really want to see when the bi-week is before I answer this question. Cause I think
29:05 that it's sneaky important in answering this. We'll get the schedule. They usually put it
29:10 out second, third week in may. So that's coming soon, sooner rather than later. Um, I I've
29:16 kind of used Halloween as just a, you know, checkpoint if it's a week earlier, a week
29:21 later or whatever, but you know, it's kind of a, around the midway point. I, I, I don't
29:27 think they're going to start them right away. I think they saw what happened doing that
29:30 with Mack Jones and you can't pull back if he's not ready. I think they want to be sure
29:34 when they're ready. Um, and then, you know, it should take about, I think half a season.
29:41 Yeah. Yeah. All the indications we've gotten makes it seem like they're obviously not going
29:46 to rush him into this and it kind of seems like they want to start him or start him on
29:50 the bench or on the sideline. I should say my only thing is I still think we're going
29:54 to get out there and we've heard them preach competition. And I just think he's going to
29:58 be kind of clearing away the best quarterback on the field. And then if you're preaching
30:03 competition, can you say, we're going to sit this guy down kind of like what happened with
30:07 Mac and cam and max rookie year in 21, where it was the best thing for the team. If Mac
30:14 Jones started, he was the best quarterback in camp. Now you flash forward. Now if Drake
30:18 may is the best quarterback in camp, like, can you sit him and maybe you have an early
30:21 by and you can sell to the team like, Hey, we're going to bench him a month just so we
30:26 don't overwhelm them. And then we're going to put them in. That might be easier for the,
30:29 like the defense to understand. But that's my only thing. But yeah, the bi-week is going
30:34 to be important and just don't rush them. We, we said like once he's in there, he's
30:39 in there. So you gotta be 100% certain that he's ready, ready to get in there before you
30:44 just kind of throw them out there. But, uh, that that's obviously the one everyone's looking
30:50 at. If we were on prize picks and the line was, uh, six and a half games played or games
30:55 started by Drake may this year, would you go more or less? Oh, six and a half games
31:01 started. Yeah. That's a good number. I'd probably go more, more. Yeah. I'd go more too. I think.
31:11 Uh, what about games one? That's also kind of, we need to see the schedule, uh, for that
31:17 one, but yeah, I mean, they do have a tough, uh, list of opponents on the scale. I think
31:26 like strength of schedule, they're like 30th or 31st, uh, which is tough when you're playing
31:30 a last place schedule, but you know, like Joe Burrow and the bangles were a fourth place
31:34 team last year. So, uh, it wasn't a great time to have a last place schedule, but, uh,
31:40 yeah, I think, I think probably like six or seven is what you're looking at. That's the
31:46 range I'm kind of into. Unless like, unless Drake made maxes out and go CJ strat, I'm
31:50 thinking six or seven. Yep. I'm with you on that one. Uh, most important re-signing done
31:59 this off season. I guess you can include bar more in there if you want to, but yeah, no,
32:04 but it's Michael and one who look at, look at how worried we are about one of their tackle
32:08 spots. Now you're telling me they have another that's open. Uh, it's easily Michael and when
32:11 well, Caden Wallace could be the right tackle. Okay. And while it's going to be the left
32:17 tackle, so you're right. You know what? If they didn't re-sign Michael and went to one
32:21 of their left tackles, who's a right tackle would actually be playing right. Tackle. Um,
32:28 what is Joe Milton's role in the QB room? Uh, his talks with the pats have been about
32:34 playing quarterback. Yeah. He's going to play quarterback. Joe Milton's not a tight end.
32:38 Like I know people think that cause he's big and he's physical. First off his biggest issue
32:42 is quarterback is his footwork. So if you can't, you know, work out a drop back, how's
32:47 he going to work out rat running? He's also not people think cause he can run. He's super
32:52 fast. Like he's not slow, but also he's not going to run away from coverage. Part of the
32:56 reason he's so effective as a runner is that he's fast enough at six, five to 30 that he's
33:02 just impossible to tackle. So if anything, he's a running back, but he's too big to play
33:06 that. I think his role is essentially is a combination of two roles. When Jacoby Bursette
33:13 was backing up Andrew Luck in Indianapolis, he, they used him for hail Mary's cause he
33:19 had a bigger arm than luck and for quarterback sneaks cause he was bigger and they didn't
33:23 want luck taking the beating. So I think Joe Milton gives you that. And then maybe you
33:27 put in, when I say this, don't think of taste some hill cause he's not going to play tight
33:32 end, but you put in a package for him where it's like some version of the cam Newton goal
33:39 line package. So there's designed runs, there's read options and there's options for him to
33:45 throw out of it.
33:46 And you just let him operate those and you don't just run on the goal line. Maybe you
33:50 mix in a little Malik Cunningham as well, but not with the receiver part. Like he's
33:54 just playing quarterback, but I think he's a package player and then you hope he shows
33:59 enough in the preseason that in a year or two, you know, you drafted him with a six
34:02 round pick, maybe a flip him for a fourth or a fifth. Yeah. Yeah, I agree with all that.
34:10 I'm Brendan schooler. He had penalties last year. A blue 42 Python saying there was a
34:17 lack of development from him. Do you see him off the 53 man roster?
34:21 I don't see him off, but he's got to cut down on the penalties cause they were stupid penalties
34:26 and it's not, you know, it's different staff than the one that brought him in. So I, they
34:30 need special teams guys. So I think he makes the team. Although I, if he starts paying
34:35 a bunch of stupid penalties in the preseason, maybe not, but uh, one way or another, he's
34:39 got to cut down on the penalties. If he has another bad run of penalties this year, maybe
34:44 he doesn't make it through the season.
34:45 Yeah. Yeah. He does have a relationship with Jeremy Springer. I think he committed to him
34:51 under Arizona, never played on something like that. Yeah. But I think then Brendan schooler's
34:55 brother played under Springer. So there is a relationship. Um, but yeah, you can't, what
35:01 was it like eight or nine penalties last year? I think he was either first in the league
35:05 or tied for second among specialists. So, uh, you need to cut that number down, but
35:09 they Slater's obviously gone. I'd be pretty surprised if he doesn't at least if something
35:14 happens over camp and the preseason that works his way off the 53 men roster.
35:20 Uh, yeah. Um, do we have any more or do we want to get a quick Boston sportsman in here
35:25 before we wrap it up? Uh, we could do that. But before we do that, Alex Celtics are advancing.
35:32 And if you want to go to a game TD garden, we are back. We're hosting round two game
35:38 time is an authorized ticket marketplace of the NBA, which makes getting playoff tickets
35:43 even faster and easier prices on the game time app actually go down. The closer you
35:48 get to kickoff, they are tip off kickoff. I'm getting ahead of myself here. They have
35:54 flash deals, zone deals, last minute deals, save up to 60% off by and last minute for
35:59 sports. You can also use concerts, comedy theater. I love, you know, if you're in Boston,
36:04 you can go get a slice at halftime or go to the harp for a drink. And then right before
36:08 tip off, you can log on game time, get your tickets, get a really good deal, go see the
36:13 Celtics in the playoffs there. So take all the guesswork out of buying NBA tickets with

36:31 game time today. Last minute tickets, lowest prices, guaranteed game time. So Celtics are
36:37 advanced. They are through Porzingis out. You worried?
36:43 I mean, I'm worried big picture. I just think Porzingis gives them such a different element
36:47 that they don't have. Like you could lose Jalen Brown. I have other guys that can do
36:51 what Jalen Brown does not as high of a level, but they can do it. Um, Porzingis gives them
36:56 an interior presence that they just can't mimic. So if you run into the nuggets, right
37:01 in Yopi, it, you need that guy. Now the reporting makes it sound like he'll come back during
37:04 the Eastern conference finals, which I think is perfect. You ease him back in during that
37:08 series and then he's full go. When you get to the finals, they should still be whoever
37:12 it is, Orlando or Cleveland in the second round.
37:15 I still like them against whoever in the Eastern conference finals, like him against anybody
37:19 coming out of the East, but boy, it was already tough enough. The matchup with Denver and
37:24 not having Porzingis a hundred percent would be a brutal blow. Yeah. Yeah. They should
37:28 be fine. I think without them throughout the East, they should still, you know, walk through
37:33 that. You take him out. It's basically the team last year, just replacing Drew for Marcus
37:37 smart. So they should be fine through the East, but yeah, if you want to be Denver or
37:41 even like, you know, Minnesota has got a really good size if they work their way out of the
37:45 West somehow, like you're going to need Porzingis to, to, to win the finals most likely.
37:50 So hopefully, hopefully like the Cleveland series goes seven and you have a week before
37:54 you even have to play the second round and then you just don't need them in the second
37:57 round and you can get them plenty of rest here down the line. But yeah, you're, you're
38:00 going to need him at the end and the stretch there to kind of get over the hump there in
38:06 the finals. Definitely. Yeah, that's it. He's the most important player on the team, not
38:11 named Jason Tatum. I truly believe that. Yeah. And then Bruins they're doing it again.
38:17 Are they maybe puck drop in about 20 minutes here? Do you have any good about them tonight?
38:22 You can't. And I think they'll win because the Maple Leafs can only do so much without
38:26 Austin Matthews. But you, you, even if you think they're going to win, you can't tell
38:30 me as a Bruins fan, you feel good about this game tonight. I oddly do, which is why I never
38:38 have confidence in them and they don't deserve confidence in. Right. And so tonight you do,
38:43 but it's just, it's like, it's the Leafs second. Like you can't lose two games against the
38:50 Leafs without Austin Matthews. Can you? And it, it seems like if any team can, it's this
38:55 Bruins team. I agree with you, but if any team can, it's this Bruins team. Yeah. I just,
39:01 I don't know. And again, I rarely have confidence in them and these big games, but I just have
39:07 a weird confidence that they're going to win by like two or three goals tonight. I think
39:12 they're, I think they're going to come out. Hopefully they come out with a little more
39:15 jump than they did in game five. Cause that was ugly. Two shots in the first period there.
39:21 I still can't believe Jim Montgomery changed the lines. That is still just blowing my mind
39:26 that he went back to what failed him last year against Florida and changed the lines
39:31 again. That is that just, I'm still confused about that. But yeah, I feel like, I don't
39:37 know why I just feel confident in them tonight.
39:39 All right. But we should mention the Red Sox too, by the way, in this 18 to 13 great pitching
39:46 with all these injuries with the triple a roster. Pretty much. I mean, are there 18
39:51 and 14? Sorry, but how they're already done. What time did they play today? Oh, was it
39:56 a getaway game today? Uh, they played at one 30. So yeah. Um, I, uh, look, they're going
40:06 to get guys back and they're going to get better. And I don't know how long this pitching
40:09 is going to last. Cause I think these guys are thrown in a way that's not sustainable.
40:12 They're gonna blow their arms out, but they've given us a baseball season into may. That's
40:17 exciting. I still have my problems with the overall direction of the organization, but
40:22 I think Alex Cora deserves a ton of credit and, uh, Andrew Bailey as well. I think the
40:27 two of them deserve a ton of credit for getting what they've gotten out of this group so far.
40:32 Yeah. Andrew Bailey team MVP I'd say so far. Yeah. I mean, what cutter cop Crawford has
40:37 like a sub one era. He has the best. He is like the best area in baseball. It's only
40:41 a matter of time till he blows his arm out because he's only throwing breaking balls
40:45 and it's not sustainable, but it's fun for now. So, uh, I love like, uh, Cooper Criswell.
40:52 Like they trade for them and then he just like shatters his hand upon arrival immediately.
40:56 It's just like, no, Cooper Criswell, Garrett Cooper, Cooper Criswell. So healthy. So no,
41:01 it's the first basement Dominic Smith any minute now it's coming for him. You know,
41:05 it's just, it's just, they're in and then they're out, but right there, they're winning
41:09 games somehow. So, uh, we'll see. We'll see. But, uh, it is Jeremy Swayman as well. I just
41:14 looked that up. Obviously I think I would have stayed with Swayman tonight. Um, probably
41:19 his series from here on out, but I think that is, that is the report right now that Swayman's
41:24 going to start. Yeah, I just looked, he, he led the, led them out on the ice. So it's
41:28 his neck. He should be, he should be starting tonight. Yeah, a hundred percent. But all
41:32 right, let's go watch the Bruins. Hopefully we have a win. Hopefully we don't have an
41:37 elimination game, uh, back in the garden on Saturday, but, uh, until then you can follow
41:42 us on Twitter at real Alex Barth at I am Brian Heinz. Make sure you follow at Patriots at
41:47 CLNS on Twitter as well. We'll let you know when our next show will be. We'll be back,
