00:00A little advice, if you find yourself in Australia, never put your finger in one of these holes, it could be the den of a fleeing spider.
00:08Some species have a sufficiently strong bite to pierce the nail, and the pain caused by the venom is comparable to a hammer blow.
00:16So, always quickly inspect your boots and outerwear to stay safe.
00:21All kinds of animals are likely to go home or look for their food there, especially Australian bandicoots.
00:28A terrier stuffed with silk in a shady corner could well belong to the black-winged spider.
00:33This silk works like a direct line that informs the spider of everything that is happening outside.
00:38Beware of these shiny, dark brown or black spiders, with pro-eminent filaments at the end of their abdomen.
00:46You will sooner or later find them.
00:48Males have a robust coupling rostrum, which emerges from the middle of their second pair of legs.
00:53When these spiders feel threatened, they adopt a threatening behavior by standing on their legs and showing off their impressive hooks.
01:01These spiders, which belong to the family of Araneida, are known for their web-shaped funnel that expands near the entrance.
01:09They patiently wait in this narrow funnel for their prey to touch the web, then they catch it promptly.
01:15In Australia, these large brown spiders, Latrax robustus and Latrax formidabilis, terrorize people because of their venomous bites.
01:23They are known to have caused many deaths in the south and east of Australia, especially in the Sydney region, and since the 1920s.
01:31It is imperative to administer the antidote as soon as possible after a bite to avoid serious sequelae.
01:38The next spider is one of the most dangerous in the world because of its venom.
01:42Phonotria nigriventer is a spider living in South America.
01:46It is often nicknamed the wandering spider of Brazil.
01:49There, 4,000 people are victims of this spider every year.
01:53Its bite can cause serious problems including perspiration, hypertension, vision problems and vomiting.
01:59It would be better for you to never meet this creature because you could face much worse consequences than vision problems.
02:06In some situations, its sting can prove deadly.
02:10In addition to attacking humans, this spider has a very varied diet, including crickets, otters and even larger prey such as arboreal frogs, lizards and bats.
02:21Operating under the cover of darkness, these spiders are the most active during the night.
02:25They tend to ambush their prey instead of hanging from their web.
02:29And during the day, they seek refuge under meadows or in narrow crevasses.
02:34They like to climb banana trees but can also find themselves in urban environments and inside houses.
02:39If you spot one one day, be ready.
02:42The body of this creature is covered with brown hairs and it is rather tough.
02:46In 2013, a London family had to leave their house due to a Brazilian wandering spider infestation.
02:52Troubles began when an egg pocket, hidden in a banana regime, scurried off to their local supermarket.
02:59No one noticed anything.
03:01When they bought their banana, the egg pocket broke and potentially deadly spiders spread all over the house.
03:09More than 2,500 people visit the United States antipoison centers every year.
03:15Black swans are these spiders wearing a characteristic sand-shaped mark on the belly.
03:20But let's talk a little bit about their bite.
03:22These arachnids have a bad reputation because their venom is supposedly 15 times more powerful than that of snakes.
03:29When a black swan bites a human, its bite causes muscle pain and nausea.
03:34This venom can even complicate breathing by paralyzing the diaphragm.
03:38Despite these rare cases, most victims do not develop serious problems, unless they are very young or too old.
03:45These deafening creatures do not choose just one place to relax.
03:49They can be found in piles of wood, terriers or among plants that serve as skeletons to their web.
03:54Black swans are particularly dangerous to other insects and their companions.
04:00After a not-so-romantic mating parade, these ladies sometimes like to replay the silence of the lambs with their partners.
04:07These spiders are also talented architects.
04:09They weave huge webs where the females hide a cocoon filled with several hundred of them.
04:14The baby spiders come out once hatched.
04:17But the web remains in place because it is also a trap.
04:20Thus, different types of prey later join the frightening buffet of the black widow.
04:26The Chiracanthium inclusum or Chiracanth has a size between 3 and 15 mm
04:33and builds silk tubes under the stones, in the foliage or in the grass.
04:37It is found everywhere in the United States, Mexico and Latin America.
04:41They are venomous to humans and, alas, often end up inside houses.
04:46The venom of Chiracanth contains a cytotoxin.
04:49It is a substance that can damage or alter the functioning of cells.
04:53Reactions such as redness and swelling at the site of the bite are common.
04:57Chiracanths are not known for their serene nature and the female can bite to protect her eggs.
05:03These spiders generally wear distinctive light colors and can cause us discomfort in several ways.
05:09Your vehicle can also pose a risk because on rare occasions they can install their nests in the engines of cars.
05:17Now let's move on to wolf spiders.
05:20They are part of a vast family that can be found all over the world.
05:23They are nicknamed so because of their hunting techniques similar to that of wolves.
05:27They track their prey before leaping on it.
05:30About 125 species exist in North America and about fifty live in Europe.
05:35These spiders are generally dark brown in color, with ragged, velvety and elongated bodies and robust long legs.
05:42They are extremely fast.
05:44Although they generally create tubular nests filled with silk to the ground, some can hide the entrance with debris.
05:51Others erect structures similar to turrets and some species also weave stars.
05:57Wolf spiders can bite to defend themselves.
06:00They are venomous, but their bites are not considered very dangerous.
06:04Some people allergic to spider bites can still feel nausea, dizziness and an increase in their heart rate.
06:12The pain caused by the large mandibles of this spider is similar to a bee sting.
06:17Thus, it can cause a physical injury and the venom can cause disfigurement in the biting area.
06:23The combination of their terrible mandibles, their fast movements and their appearance can be quite disturbing.
06:31Beware of the black widow with a red back, a close relative of our black widow.
06:36She used to live only in Australia.
06:38However, she managed to spread her web to New Zealand, Belgium and Japan thanks to the export of grapes.
06:44These characteristic red stripes, or these marks in the form of sand on their backs, are more easily observable in females.
06:51Disturb one and you will see how she protects her eggs.
06:55You are likely to be bitten.
06:57These spiders can sneak into the shoes or clothes, covering the victim's skin while she is dressing.
07:03Males and females are both venomous.
07:05And this venom is a cocktail of neurotoxins capable of causing sweat, an acceleration of the heart rate and a swelling of the lymphatic ganglions.
07:13This spider is able to control the dose of venom, so that the symptoms vary depending on the amount injected.
07:20Australia is prey to more than 250 bites of black widow with a red back each year, many of which require treatment.
07:27The last case where a person died goes back to 1956.
07:31But it can still happen, so be careful with these sneaky spiders.
07:38Let's now talk about the heavyweight champion in the world of spiders.
07:41The blonde pteraphosa, commonly called Goliath or bird-eater migal.
07:46This huge spider can stretch up to 30 cm and weigh up to 170 g.
07:52To put this into perspective, it would be big enough to cover your plate and is certified by the Guinness Book of Records.
07:59Its nickname could make you imagine a migal feasting on a hummingbird, but it would be more of a poetic license dating back to the 18th century.
08:07These arachnids are much more interested in arthropods and rarely throw their devils on birds.
08:13The Goliath spider does not hide from webs like its congeners.
08:16Instead, it reserves its silk for the creation of nested terriers under the forest floor.
08:21The spider itself seems dangerous, but its bite almost never requires a visit from the doctor.
08:27It looks more like a wasp bite.
08:29The Goliath migal is the largest spider on Earth.
08:32At the other end of the spectrum, we have this one, the Patu digua, native to Colombia.
08:38It is among the smallest spider species.
08:41Adult males of this species measure 0.4 mm in length.
08:45Smaller than an average pinhead.
08:48Females are generally a little bigger.
08:50Well, that's scary, isn't it?
