00:15 It is Monday the 3rd of June 2024.
00:20 The players of the national football team, the Indomitable Lions,
00:24 held their first training session today at the Nguwakele Stadium in Younde,
00:28 as they prepare for their World Cup qualifier against Cabo Verde on Saturday.
00:36 A topical issue today is on the cost of building roads in Cameroon.
00:40 Public opinion is in discord as to why building a road in Cameroon
00:44 is two or three times more expensive than in other African countries.
00:50 No doubt other countries are doing better in the domain.
00:54 Plus, Cameroonian pilgrims to this year's spiritual retreat, the Hatch,
00:59 arrived in Medina today for the prayers.
01:02 Their quest for basic goods and services sets the stage for spiritual quest.
01:08 Those are our top stories. I am Benin Bumagana.
01:11 This is the 730 News.
01:15 The national football team, the Indomitable Lions, held their first
01:18 training session today at the Nguwakele Stadium
01:21 ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Cabo Verde on Saturday.
01:26 The Indomitable Lions arrived at the stadium amidst cheers and shouts from their fans.
01:31 The first 15 minutes were open to the press and our man,
01:35 Sirin Nwaziki, was there. Here is his report.
01:40 They had been waiting for a while until this moment.
01:43 The bus having on board the Indomitable Lions
01:46 arrives the Yaounde Military Stadium. The old and new players drop off
01:51 one after the other to the applause of fans, either by waving
01:55 or putting on a smile. On the training pitch,
01:59 Mark Brice and his assistants lead the session,
02:02 ball juggling in different groups in preparation for a light training session.
02:07 After the brief prayer, the players and instruction of the head coach
02:12 take on the training proper. According to the staff, the training session is
02:16 entitled to muscle relaxation and group exercises.
02:20 Vincent, Boubacar and Mait talk of a serene atmosphere in the den
02:24 and are ready for the upcoming clashes. The atmosphere is very good.
02:29 We have a good group here, good people and yeah we're gonna try to
02:33 to play well for the two next games. The two games we're gonna play
02:37 are gonna be tough because obviously both of them went to the
02:41 good stage in the last half-con so we're gonna face two good challenges.
02:46 Prior to this first training session, the Lions earlier had a fitness exercise
02:51 plus a walk downtown. Cameroon will currently top group D with four points
02:57 face off against Cabo Verde on June 8 for their day three World Cup 2026
03:02 qualifier at the Yaounde Omni Sports Stadium.
03:06 And such a disclash against the Blue Sharks of Cabo Verde
03:10 will determine who takes the lead in group D of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
03:15 Cameroon and Cape Verde including Libya are four points each
03:19 and with the match against Angola on the 11th, Cameroon must be on a win
03:23 and a prayer. Cape Verde has however never beaten Cameroon in the World Cup
03:27 qualifier so Gilbert Ngane took a keen interest in
03:30 the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde. Here is his report. Cursed by 54 year old
03:36 former national Cabo Verdean team defender Pedro Laitao Brito, the Blue
03:41 Sharks have made great strides in football on
03:44 the continent this recent past. Though we've seen so far he's done it again
03:49 look at that he is unreal. Though forward Ryan Mendez and his
03:55 teammates have never qualified for the FIFA World
03:58 Cup, the team has taken part in the four past
04:01 editions of the nation's cup. Their best performance
04:05 is when they reached the quarterfinals of AFCON 2023
04:09 and were knocked out by South Africa. The Blue Sharks
04:12 dominant display in AFCON 2023 in Cote d'Ivoire
04:16 still sparks excitement and speculation on what the present squad can achieve.
04:22 Cabo Verde have won their two last friendly games
04:26 as a build-up to the World Cup qualifiers. First
04:29 against Guyana one goal to nothing and then against
04:33 Equatorial Guinea last March 25th in Jeddah,
04:36 Saudi Arabia on a similar score. The team has so stamped their mark on the
04:42 African continental football scene that any match involving Cabo Verde is
04:47 now a must-watch spectacle.
04:51 So the Lions have the entire week to train before the game.
04:55 On to something else the director general of the World Intellectual Property
04:58 Organization Darren Tang says his organization is open
05:02 to working with Cameroon to make intellectual property
05:05 a driver of innovation creativity and development.
05:09 He was speaking today in Younde after a meeting with the prime minister head of
05:13 government Joseph Dion Gute. Discussions focused on
05:16 ways of taking intellectual property closer to inventors and innovations on
05:21 the field. Details with a Star Building Correspondent
05:24 Christian Che Atam.
05:27 The meeting between the prime minister head of government Joseph Dion Gute
05:32 and the visiting director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization
05:36 was also attended by a cross-section of members of government.
05:40 The two parties explored ways of making intellectual property
05:43 a vector of national development in Cameroon. A very good meeting with the
05:47 prime minister and many of the ministers to see how
05:51 intellectual property can support the Cameroon's
05:54 you know national development plan and a lot of it is about how can IP go down to
05:59 the grassroots. Supporting Cameroonians, inventors,
06:03 creators, entrepreneurs. The discussions also touched on ways of updating the
06:08 intellectual property strategy of Cameroon.
06:10 So that it now is not just focusing only on the legal and technical aspects of IP
06:14 but on the developmental aspects of intellectual property. How can it
06:17 support the use of innovation and creativity and
06:21 entrepreneurship by Cameroon. The director general used the meeting to
06:25 salute the important role Cameroon has played over the years
06:28 within the organization. Over the last few decades Cameroon has played a very
06:33 important role in our work. Just two weeks ago Cameroon was part of
06:38 a very active part of very important negotiations that led to a new WIPO
06:42 treaty on intellectual property, genetic resources
06:46 and associated traditional knowledge. A cooperation which the prime minister of
06:50 government Joseph Dion Gute and the WIPO director
06:53 general promised to continue. The costs of building roads and motorway
06:59 in Cameroon remains two or three times more expensive than
07:03 similar projects in countries with equivalent levels of development
07:07 on the continent. The situation has sparked displeasure and discord
07:12 in public opinion as the state continues to lose
07:15 huge sums in road infrastructural projects. Several efforts undertaken to
07:19 curtail the expenses show that government will can be done
07:24 with just amount. Joyce Kimbe Forwaju brings details.
07:30 The cost of road and motorway construction are most often influenced
07:34 by either topography, climatic, hydraulic and other conditions.
07:38 From conception to execution of the road project it could be influenced by many
07:42 other factors such as the characteristic of the
07:45 project, provisionary estimate, the lengthy procedure of the award of
07:49 public contracts, the economic environment, business climate,
07:52 unavailability of project site and the non-payment of indemnities.
07:56 To reduce the high cost of road construction in Cameroon, the government
08:00 being this project supervisor since 2013 have been addressing the situation. This
08:06 through redimensioning the road, the promotion of the public-private
08:10 partnership in road infrastructural development,
08:13 reduction of the cost per kilometer of road construction
08:16 as well as the reduction of taxes on the award of contracts,
08:20 the implementation of innovative techniques in the construction of roads
08:23 in the country as well as measures taken to reduce
08:26 cost. The fight against corruption in the sector
08:30 has also been tightened and the construction of a tar production
08:33 factory in Kribi is well advanced. Since 2017 there has been a decrease in
08:39 the cost of road construction in the country
08:41 as seen on the project of road construction on Lena
08:45 Segba Tibati in the center and Adamawa region which has benefited
08:49 from some economy and the money has been used in the construction
08:52 of a 32 kilometer long road in Ngat. Well it's the greatest wish of Cameroonians
08:58 that the efforts undertaken should continue.
09:01 This time 25 journalists are studying projects implemented within the framework
09:06 of the French death relief and development contract known by its French
09:10 acronym as C2D or C2D. The first trip is to
09:14 enable journalists drawn from different media houses better
09:17 inform the public on the C2D projects in the literal.
09:21 Scholar Maloke reports. Although it is now a thing of the past
09:27 the inhabitants of the Bepanda, Mispo and Sitesik neighborhoods
09:31 still recall those days when floods made life unbearable for them.
09:36 If rain starts I will carry all my children and put them on top of the table
09:42 of everything. We have a little hitch we'll be coming back to that story.
09:48 But this time the director general of treasury financial and monetary
09:51 cooperation has called public and private agents and
09:55 members of the civil society on the appreciation of new anti-corruption
09:58 techniques. East governor Gregor Vongo chaired the
10:02 two-day training on exchanges and new developments centered
10:05 around the theme mastering corruption and related offenses and techniques.
10:10 Pearl Sa brings us details from Betwa.
10:14 The leitmotif of this seminar organized by the directorate general of treasury
10:20 financial and monetary cooperation in partnership with GONAC is to ensure
10:24 actors from different sectors in the east region reinforce the fight against
10:28 corruption by implementing preventive educational
10:32 and repressive measures in their various units.
10:35 When somebody embezzles or steals money there are some structures that have
10:39 been supposed to be built on the field that cannot have the
10:42 possibility to have these financial means. This particular seminar
10:46 brings together collaborators of treasury services, the
10:49 users of the public services, the senior staff of the state here in the region
10:54 so that we bring up solid proposals so as to reduce eradicate corruption.
10:59 For two days the participants have been equipped with knowledge on different
11:03 facets of corruption related offenses as well as corruption
11:07 combating techniques. All participants to fight against
11:11 corruption all our regional administrations.
11:16 In the presence of Bule Valentine, East Regional Paymaster General and the
11:21 president of the East Regional Council, Wamanbele,
11:24 the actors were exhorted to make use of the seminar and improve on their
11:28 performance and contribution in the fight against corruption in the region.
11:33 Now let's go back to the literal where we were seeing that 25 journalists are
11:36 studying projects under the French debt relief and
11:39 development contract known by its French acronym "Ace de Deux"
11:43 for better media communications. Colum Maloke now reports.
11:48 Although it is now a thing of the past, the inhabitants of the Bepanda, Mispo
11:53 and Sitesik neighborhoods still recall those days when floods made life
11:58 unbearable for them. If rain starts, I will carry all my children
12:03 and put them on top the table. Of everything like electric, water will
12:08 fill everywhere because there was no drainage. Here was
12:11 just a nightmare. Water used to enter the house, you will
12:15 see everything flooding, pandas. Oh mama,
12:20 we will dry mattress for more than one week. A majority of neighborhoods in the
12:25 five subdivisions of the Vuri benefited the construction of drainages
12:30 by the French C2D projects intended to ease
12:33 life for the population, action which has been impacting lives.
12:38 Today it seems as if we are living in Bonnando. Now when it is raining,
12:42 the big drainage you see like this, we carry all the water and go. Everywhere
12:47 is open. You can see the places are very good, so
12:51 we are now feeling fine. Development is now a reality in
12:56 these neighborhoods with beautiful structures erected
12:59 accessibility on both sides of the drainage is also possible.
13:04 But the major problem of uncivil behavior of the inhabitants
13:08 abound as they dump refuse in the drainages.
13:11 Constant maintenance of this facility is thus a cause for concern.
13:18 Let's follow the development story in the southwest region
13:21 where the southwest development authority, SOEDA, says it will spare no
13:24 efforts in assisting farmers to guarantee food
13:27 security in the southwest region. During a meeting to evaluate the
13:30 performance of the structure, there was also stated that in spite of
13:34 the crisis, the government has provided SOEDA with the resources to
13:38 attend to the challenge of farmers in the region. Details with
13:42 Enanga Menyoli, CRTV Southwest. The promotion of white pepper
13:47 cultivation, eco-livestock and fisheries value chain
13:51 projects, road infrastructure and many more will
13:54 soon be injected in the agricultural map of the
13:57 southwest region with the intention to create more jobs and opportunities for
14:01 farmers in all corners of the region. For such projects like these and more to
14:06 be executed, Bote, SOEDA says there must be
14:10 collaboration between SOEDA and partners. We've recommended asking management to
14:16 look for other funding partners, collaborate with third parties,
14:20 especially international partners who have funding, who have projects.
14:26 During a meeting in Boya devoted for the evaluation of management report for
14:33 2023, it was revealed that 81 percent of
14:36 projects were realized despite the existing
14:40 constraints. Resources were mobilized to the tune of
14:43 about 2 billion 266 million and of those 2 billion 266,
14:50 1 billion 840 were executed. In terms of expenses, the management has
14:56 done very well. SOEDA is expecting to bring development to red zones
15:00 and ensure food security in the southwest region as
15:03 it is a key player in the presidential plan for the reconstruction
15:08 and development of the region. Across Cameroon and around the world, you are
15:12 watching the 7.30 news on the CRTV. Our only series on the news this week
15:18 zooms in on the fourth industrial revolution which is the merging of
15:22 technologies like artificial intelligence to change people's way of
15:26 life. Tonight we focus on modern smart
15:29 technology or internet of things which is the ability to
15:32 connect and exchange data with other devices and systems over the
15:36 internet. A video surveillance system is one of such technologies
15:40 as Yoti Kalelisonge tells us in act one of our running series.
15:46 Industry 4.0, a bridge to the future of cutting-edge solutions.
15:51 One of them being the internet linking up devices and exchanging data
15:56 making it smart technology like phones, intelligent watches and security
16:01 cameras. The main things that is really special
16:05 for them is their capacity to communicate one to another. For instance
16:10 the cameras that are used you know by parents
16:14 when they leave their children in class or at home.
16:17 A technological evolution gradually being assimilated in Cameroon
16:22 with youth daring to be innovative. In 2023 for example, some students of the
16:28 African Institute of Computer Sciences won the first prize in science and
16:32 technology during the university games for their
16:35 smart parking solution. More and more students are thinking
16:40 out of a box and building applications. That is how much internet of things
16:46 is being integrated in Cameroon today. The main challenge now is data security.
16:54 In addition to data security is the problem of storage.
16:57 It's very very important for us to have energy
17:01 in the whole country. Equal access to internet is fundamental.
17:05 The government has the huge responsibility with the help
17:09 of private sector to build to have in this country data centers.
17:15 Internet of things keeps impressing users with their various functions which
17:20 they say facilitate life. The written phase of the 2024
17:25 session of the Certificat d'Aptitude Professionnel CAP
17:28 has begun nationwide at a government bilingual technical high school,
17:32 LONCAC in Yaoundé. 522 candidates of both French and
17:36 English subsystems of education are sitting the exam. Victor Siga has
17:40 details. Government bilingual technical high
17:44 school LONCAC gives a hint of an examination center.
17:48 As early as 6 a.m candidates answered present
17:52 while supervisors carried out the systematic check of candidates.
17:56 The center is host to over 522 candidates
18:01 sitting the Certificat d'Aptitude Professionnel from the English and
18:04 French subsystems of education. Here we are the CIP industrial. We have
18:10 building construction, mercenary, electricity. We equally have
18:16 Kome which is Kutu Sumesu. The exam unfolded while we started at
18:20 eight o'clock exactly and for now we have few cases of
18:25 absence. In all serenity candidates of the English
18:28 subsystem of education began with English language while those
18:32 of the francophone subsystem starts the day with etude the text.
18:37 Majority of the cases of absence are those who are not regular. It is two hours
18:41 period. English language there is a reading
18:43 comprehension and listening comprehension.
18:45 They are going to face the practical as from the 11th of June to the 22nd of
18:50 June. The exam ends on Friday the 7th of June
18:54 2024. Minister of the employment and vocational training Isa Chiroma Bakari
19:00 has signed an agreement with the common initiative group in
19:03 Banjun to provide vocational training to youth
19:06 in the area. The two parties signed the contract during a visit to the project
19:10 financed by the French development agency C2D
19:13 on the construction of vocational training centers.
19:16 Siobhan Bokuma completes that story from Banjun.
19:21 Young people in Banjun and the west region at large will now benefit
19:25 from quality training in the fields of solar energy,
19:29 civil and mechanical engineering, food production and conservation
19:34 amongst others. All these thanks to this new training center
19:38 fruit of an agreement signed between the states of Cameroon,
19:42 the French development agency C2D and members
19:46 of the private sector. Private and public cooperation is
19:53 the device conceived by the government in order to fight
19:56 against poverty and unemployment. The only outcome that might be
20:04 useful to help the government address this issue of creating wealth
20:08 and job is the private sector. This is the purpose of this
20:12 convention. Such win-win partnerships between the state and private sectors
20:17 will boost the technical and professional skills of young people
20:21 in and around Banjun tailored to suit the job market.
20:26 We face every day the lack of good employees. This convention
20:32 we are sure that we will have this opportunity to employ
20:40 the men they've qualified. The move which will help increase employment
20:45 opportunities for young people and boost the local
20:48 economy has been warmly welcomed by the local
20:52 population. The ceremony ended with a tour
20:56 of the Banjun vocational training center.
21:00 The sixth meeting of the council of ministers of the steering committee for
21:03 the restructuring of regional economic communities in
21:06 central Africa opened today at the Yande Hilton hotel.
21:10 Focus of the five-day forum grouping state authorities
21:13 of the Semarc, ECAS and ECGLC member countries
21:17 aims at working towards an improved structure and efficiency of regional
21:21 integration. Ewanepole reports. Three regional
21:27 integration organizations coexist and overlap in central Africa. These are the
21:32 economic community of central African states, ECAS, the economic and monetary
21:37 community of central Africa, Semarc and the economic community of the
21:41 Great Lakes countries, ECGLC. These regional communities
21:47 pursue the same objective with similar integration policies
21:51 and programs. It is in order to remedy this situation
21:55 that the sixth steering committee for the restructuring of regional
22:00 economic communities in central Africa is meeting in Yaounde
22:04 from June 10th to the 7th. In application of the
22:10 United Nations intentions of ensuring the efficiency of regional
22:16 economic communities, the African Union adopted what we call
22:21 the Lagos declaration, objective being
22:25 to rationalize and ensure that regional economic communities
22:29 are as efficient as possible. The five-day forum opened this Monday with
22:35 experts working on the document to put in place
22:38 the new organization. Governors of the central and national
22:42 banks and officials of the financial markets of central Africa as well as the
22:47 council of Semarc ministers are expected to hold different sessions
22:51 during which the final decision will be taken to merge
22:55 the three regional economic communities in central
22:58 Africa. Some 25 staff of the National Gendarmerie are currently upgrading
23:03 their capacities on how to fight against gender-based
23:06 violence and women in conflict zones in Cameroon. The opening ceremony of the
23:11 workshop was chaired by Colonel Ngozo Silva,
23:14 commander of schools and training centers at the National Gendarmerie.
23:18 As she tells us, Solange Awasom. Women still shy away to report any kind
23:24 of violence be it physical, psychological and economical violence
23:29 inflicted on them especially in conflict regions in Cameroon.
23:33 This is the focus of the first training workshop on the fight against gender-
23:38 based violence especially violence against women. We want
23:42 to give a professional training to Cameroonian gendarmes
23:45 so they are more apt on how to address cases of violence
23:48 and document any form of violence reported. The staff members will be
23:53 trained on how to address victims of violence
23:56 in a professional manner and they will be schooled
23:59 on the different types of violence and more effective methods of prevention
24:03 and intervention. On the field we receive different cases of violence in conflict
24:08 areas that is why most of our participants are from
24:11 northwest, southwest and far north and north. We have
24:14 rehabilitation centers already set up where we receive victims. The seminar
24:19 that will run till the 14th of June is an avenue to set a fair playground
24:23 where women and girls will feel more secure like their male
24:27 counterparts. Students and lecturers from some higher
24:31 institutions political studies, human rights
24:34 and other institutions on international relations are meeting in the Aonde to
24:37 discuss child protection in the framework of armed conflicts.
24:41 UNICEF statistics show that close to 468 million children globally
24:46 are living with the effects of war and conflicts ages ranging
24:50 from 15 and above. Minister of Social Affairs
24:53 Pauline Irengene checked the opening as she tells us
24:56 Laurel Bate'eya.
24:59 Based with the distressing pictures of the misery and suffering of children in
25:03 times of war, there is an urgent need to ask how to
25:06 develop a culture of peace and dialogue as a way of
25:10 managing conflicts prone situations. Close to 468 million children globally
25:16 are living with the effects of war and conflicts according to UNICEF.
25:20 This seventh session is focused on the protection of the child in the framework
25:24 of armed conflicts. One of the first principle is the fact that children are
25:29 victims whether or not they are associated with
25:32 armed conflict. We need to end impunity of grave violation
25:36 against children. The training session is an opportunity to address these
25:40 fundamental concerns of human rights. We decided to face the problem
25:46 of how children rights are protected. The current
25:53 training can lead to the building of a stable
25:58 society. The program aims to strengthen among
26:01 participants a common understanding both of the new challenges affecting the
26:05 international protection of human rights and of the actions that allow a
26:09 strengthening of protection mechanism.
26:13 Let's talk the Hajj. The city of Medina in western Saudi Arabia
26:18 is hosting millions of pilgrims this Hajj and Umrah seasons.
26:21 With the pilgrims on a holy quest, the demands for several goods and services
26:26 are consequently higher on the available stores and malls to purchase enough for
26:30 the season. Territory Jamila Katsalad is one of
26:33 these pilgrims. Here is her account. Business is the in thing in Medina,
26:41 the second holiest site of Islam. An array of shopping malls, traditional
26:46 markets and retail stores remain open during this period to serve
26:51 the purchasing needs of millions of pilgrims each year.
26:55 A variety of items are on offer from traditional
26:58 outfits, local spices, perfumes and arts and crafts pieces.
27:04 This site all came real perfume, watch, this bracelet can come real and this
27:10 side everything is real. Millions of pilgrims are up and about
27:14 feeding their curiosity as the search for prayer beads, Islamic
27:19 calligraphy and religious books all on display.
27:24 It is a vibrant business period for traders in Medina during the season of
27:37 pilgrimage, a fascinating contrast to the city's
27:41 spiritual veil. A sign that Medina aside being a
27:44 religious place par excellence, it is also an economic hub during the
27:49 period of Hajj and Umrah, an atmosphere that draws a multitude
27:54 yearly from around the world. And we are seeing that the ninth
27:59 contingent of Cameroonian pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia
28:02 for this year's Hajj. Among the 264 pilgrims
28:06 who touched down this afternoon at the Medina International Airport
28:09 was the Minister of State for Tourism and Leisure, Maigari Belobuba
28:13 and a Minister Delegate in the Ministry of Transport, Njoya Zakarayo.
28:17 Our special envoy to Saudi Arabia, Gonengeshwai Boshari, captured the
28:21 emotions of the pilgrims on arrival and here is his report.
28:26 It is a moment of great joy for these Cameroonian pilgrims from diverse
28:32 backgrounds who have arrived in Medina for the
28:36 start of their pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
28:41 Among the pilgrims who have come to seek the face of Allah
28:50 is a host of prominent personalities like the Minister of State for Tourism
28:57 and Leisure, Maigari Belobuba and the Minister
29:01 Delegate in the Ministry of Transport, Njoya Zakarayo.
29:05 Naturally very very very happy as a Muslim
29:09 as you know the pilgrimage is one of the five pillars of Islam
29:17 and having the opportunity to perform the hajj
29:21 is a great pleasure. On hand to welcome the pilgrims
