00:00Your sensei is a man of great honor. I can only hope to be like him.
00:04Here's your look at the brand new Diamond Select Cobra Kai Chosen Toguchi.
00:30Decades after the tournament that changed their lives, the rivalry between Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso reignites in the sequel to the Karate Kid films.
00:37But with the reappearance of old friends and old enemies, the rivals must work together to protect the young fighters they have trained.
00:42This deluxe action figure of Chosen Toguchi is based on his appearance in the Netflix series Cobra Kai.
00:47It features over 16 points of articulation, multiple interchangeable hands, and a support stand.
00:51It was sculpted by Chris Dahlberg and Rocco Tartamello.
00:55Here's Daniel LaRusso's got himself an ally from the unlikeliest of sequels.
00:58Just before we get a closer look at the new Cobra Kai Chosen Toguchi,
01:01I'd like to thank the folks over at Diamond Select that provided the sample we could have a look at.
01:05Taking the tape measure as we've already started, Chosen is going to stand at about six and three quarters of an inch in height.
01:11Or the figure is going to stand 17 centimeters tall.
01:14As supporting sensei to Miyagi-Do, here's what Chosen looks like along with Daniel LaRusso.
01:18Looking at the two, you may recognize right away that from the head down, both Chosen and Daniel LaRusso are using the exact same molds.
01:25Maybe not as much the case when we looked at Johnny Lawrence.
01:28Although with Lawrence's case, they have basically removed the sleeve portions from the molds.
01:32The torso is going to be the same. The lower trunks are also going to be the same.
01:35And with all the cases, it seems to be the case that they're using all the same feet molds.
01:39It wasn't as much though the case when we looked at Eagle Fang Johnny Lawrence.
01:43Obviously though, while the lower trunks are the same, different t-shirts.
01:45So that's a brand new mold there.
01:47Bringing in some of the bad guys.
01:48Here's also as well what Chosen looks like with both John Kreese and the recently looked at Terry Silver.
01:54While poor Silver was strapped for accessories, Chosen does seem blessed with some additional plastic.
01:58The figure first of all comes in clear with Miyagi-Do display stand.
02:01Thinking though it was the same stand that we got from Daniel LaRusso, I wanted to bring it in just to prove a point.
02:05It isn't.
02:06While the stand looking at it is exactly the same and they've also molded in the exact same white plastic.
02:11They have though printed it differently on the top.
02:14Daniel's though had a smaller version of Miyagi-Do where both the bonsai tree, the Miyagi-Do font,
02:20and even like the ringlet around it are all shrunk down in size.
02:23Chosen though has the outlining of the green right around the trim of the actual molding of the display stand.
02:29They've also as well increased Miyagi-Do karate and they also have made the size of the bonsai tree larger.
02:35Not really sure though why they wouldn't have kept it consistent.
02:38Obviously if you're going to be putting these on the shelf, you're all likely going to be putting them all together.
02:42And you would notice right away that two stands like this don't look the same.
02:46Either way though there is the peg placement on the side and there's also a hole there on the other side
02:50that then belongs to this adjustable neck.
02:53The adjustable neck I will admit is way too long.
02:55It actually has four individual knuckle joints.
02:57Some of these knuckle joints by the way are super tight.
03:00I've noticed though, especially with Chosen's, not that it had to be necessarily Chosen's,
03:04but that the screws are way too tight to the point where I can't even bend these.
03:09I've had actually cases in the past where when trying to move this,
03:12I ended up fracturing the plastic on both the sides.
03:15And again I think it had a lot to do with just the fact I was putting too much pressure against it
03:19and it started to snap the plastic.
03:21Any one of these by the way can be detached.
03:23So again if you feel like that's way too long, any one of them again you just remove from the provided posts.
03:28I like to generally just detach it and kind of split it by half.
03:32And I kind of just kind of keep these extra ones laying around if I happen to want to display my other figures with this.
03:37And then basically that's going to plug into the provided hole.
03:40And then you're probably asking yourself, well whereabouts that pig's going to go?
03:42Turn around.
03:43Not you, Chosen.
03:45If you spin the figure around though, he's located, he's got a hole on the back in the exact same place.
03:50Like say for example we bring in Johnny Lawrence,
03:52just because again they're using the exact same holes, the exact same torsos.
03:55The placement of the hole is also going to be the exact same place too.
03:58I would have said you don't really necessarily need the display stand,
04:01but I suppose really if you did want to put them in any like kicking pose for example,
04:05it's kind of hard sometimes to balance those feet properly.
04:08One good thing at least by using a clear post like this is it's very subtly placed on the figure's body.
04:13He doesn't have like for example a big waist clip that goes around his torso.
04:16He doesn't have either like a suspended stand.
04:20I mean it really conceals itself nicely other than really just the fact that you would, you know,
04:23you'd obviously see the post behind the figure's body.
04:26At least it puts it in place.
04:28You can put the figure in a more dynamic pose without having just an overly obtrusive looking display stand.
04:34So let's move that out of the way.
04:36The figure also as well comes included with a staff.
04:38I'm sure if you've gone back and looked at any of my other Karate Kid Cobra Kai figures,
04:43sooner rather than later we've also gotten this staff accessory.
04:47The figure also comes included with a pair of tonfas,
04:50which basically are just like martial arts nightsticks.
04:54These are basically molded here in dark plastic.
04:56But if you look at them, they look like they're a little bit more of a shinier finish than the actual staff.
05:02He does have, don't worry, also gripping hands.
05:04So even though he has close to this right now,
05:05they aren't going to serve much of a purpose to hold any one of these accessories.
05:08Wait it out.
05:09He does have also some gripping hands.
05:11He also gets himself a pair of sai.
05:14The sai are actually in the same sort of shiny black plastic as the tonfas.
05:19And again, obviously, if you want to have the figure holding anything,
05:21he does also have gripping hands.
05:23The gripping hands I'm certain have been packed before with other Cobra Kai figures,
05:27just obviously molded in a different flesh skin, flesh tone color.
05:31And again, you just basically pop the hands off.
05:33He does also have this hand.
05:35And he also has a karate hand.
05:37Normally, when you get one like this, you get also the mirror flip pair of that,
05:40but you get the other mirror flip of it.
05:42In this case, actually, though, with Chosen, you get only one of each one.
05:46And again, if you want to change out the hands,
05:48just grab the existing fist that he has and just remove it.
05:51One thing, again, you'll be reminded of is just how long these posts are in these hands.
05:54But then just take the hand that you want to use,
05:57plug it back in place.
05:59I feel like—actually, hold on a second.
06:01I've got—there we go. I've got Eagle Fang.
06:03There you go. Just to show you as an example.
06:05Eagle Fang's Johnny Lawrence has the exact same hand.
06:08It just happened to be the hand that was displaying with the figure at the time.
06:10And then again, if you want to have the figure display, let's say, the gripping hands.
06:14I'll probably come back to using that more in a moment.
06:16That, again, plugs into his hands like that or plugs into the forearms.
06:20Then you can get yourself something like the Sai.
06:22Sai just fits into his hands.
06:24The plastic, by the way, also on these hands, for the fingers at least,
06:26they're fairly easy to bend.
06:28So you don't really have to fight too hard to get any one of the weapons,
06:31for that matter, for him to wield.
06:33Fairly easy to get him inside his grip.
06:35Again, you can also do that as well with the tomfas.
06:37Tomfas tend to be ones that fit basically parallel to the forearm.
06:41I can get my own hands out of the way here.
06:44But again, basically, that's just going to fit inside his grip like that.
06:48And then the figure basically has himself a tomfa.
06:50Tomfa.
06:52Just remove those and move everything, though, out of the way.
06:54Getting a closer look, though, at Chosen.
06:57Now, obviously, we were first introduced to Chosen when it came to Karate Kid 2.
07:01Not really one of my favorite of the Karate Kid films.
07:03I actually kind of really like Karate Kid 1 and Karate Kid 3.
07:05Even though Karate Kid 3 isn't the greatest of stories,
07:08I do kind of like the idea of the introduction of Terry Silver.
07:10So that kind of made Karate Kid 3 a little bit better.
07:12One thing that's good, at least, though, about Karate Kid 2
07:15was it had a very different story and a different environment.
07:17So it broke up the pace of sort of having...
07:19It sort of was the equivalent of Temple of Doom,
07:21changing out the scene so that, again, when you had Rage of the Lost Ark
07:24and then you had, of course, Indiana Jones' Last Crusade,
07:26the ones on either side of Temple of Doom kind of felt very similar to one another.
07:30I don't know why I'm comparing Karate Kid films to Indiana Jones.
07:33One thing I will say, though, to the credit of Diamond Select,
07:36is this is probably the best likeness we've gotten
07:38from any one of the characters from Karate Kid.
07:40I feel it looks the most like him.
07:42Obviously, Chosen is a little bit older, like all the other characters in Cobra Kai.
07:46But I think it really is the best likeness that we've gotten.
07:48Probably then after that, I would say, is Johnny Lawrence.
07:51Shortly then after that is John Kreese.
07:53Probably Terry Silver.
07:54I would still say that Daniel LaRusso might be maybe the weakest.
07:57The head sculpt looks good, though.
07:58And because, again, they are using the exact same body,
08:00if you were to bring back in, speaking of which, Daniel LaRusso,
08:03same torsos, yes.
08:05Same as well, same sleeves.
08:07And also, as well, they've got also the belt and the lower legs
08:09are all identical with one another, which, again, isn't a big thing for me.
08:12I mean, obviously, if it means that we get more figures,
08:15use as much of the mold as you guys possibly can.
08:17Feet are also sculpted the exact same,
08:19which means that the placement of the pegs are also in the exact same spots.
08:22So, again, you can just attach onto the display stand that's provided.
08:26I don't feel like he necessarily looks too young or too old.
08:29They've just landed, I feel, the right age here for Chozen.
08:32Skin, though, is nicely colored.
08:33I mean, again, you've got something so small, like the eyes like this,
08:36which, by the way, as well, you can see he's looking off to the side,
08:39which really, again, if you want to have the figure kind of posed,
08:42kind of have the head slightly tilted,
08:44and it has this really neat look of having him kind of looking off to the side like this.
08:47The eyebrows, the lower, smaller lips like this are all painted very well.
08:51There's no real paint problems at all I can see on this figure.
08:54Of course, when you get to the lower half of his body,
08:56my guess is that they probably would have just molded this
08:58and then gone back and painted in things like the neck, for example,
09:01because it would have been a lot less work than having to paint the entire gi.
09:05For the figure's articulation, though,
09:06Chozen's going to have the same as all the other Cobra Kai figures.
09:09Head's going to be on a ball joint,
09:10so it allows the head to rotate all the way around.
09:12The head looks down about that far.
09:15It looks up, and you can also slightly rock it back and forth, too.
09:19As for the arms, I wouldn't say easily rotate.
09:22As you rotate them, you can kind of feel there's resistance.
09:24They squeak. They creak.
09:26You can also, as well, bring the arms out at 90 degrees.
09:29There is a swivel cut right here where the bicep would be,
09:32and you can rotate it right there.
09:33The figure does have a double hinge on the elbow, also right there,
09:36and the hands do rotate all the way around.
09:38Like with all the other cases, as well,
09:40let's get the arms just hinged down. There we go.
09:42The upper torso's going to be on a ball joint.
09:44It gives you a full rotation happening,
09:46although the lower waist is, again, a very stiff swivel.
09:50Legs split out.
09:52The lower end of the gi, actually, is a softer plastic,
09:54so it makes things very easy, in fact,
09:56and they also put a little slit on the side,
09:58so you can split the legs pretty far, in fact, on all the figures.
10:01There is also 3 quarters of the way up the thigh, a swivel cut,
10:03so you can rotate the leg all the way around.
10:05Again, it's going to squeak a little bit.
10:07The legs do also have a double hinge on the knee,
10:09and with all the other cases, as well,
10:11he has a hinge back and forth on his feet
10:13and an ankle rocker, as well.
10:15Because you'll also see, as well,
10:17the back of the legs run pretty low,
10:19it kind of throws off a little bit of the standing problems,
10:21or causes some of the standing problems
10:23when you get the figures to actually be level-footed.
10:25But, again, like when it comes to Chosen,
10:27he seems to be one of the better figures,
10:29even though, ironically enough, he's using, essentially,
10:31the exact same mold.
10:33He seems to be one of the better figures to stand.
10:35Again, bringing back in Johnny Lawrence,
10:37I, again, feel my top 2 favorite figures we've gotten
10:39from Cobra Kai so far, thus far,
10:41is Chosen and then Daniel LaRusso,
10:43and maybe even, again, putting,
10:45not Daniel LaRusso, Johnny Lawrence,
10:47and then putting them in, I feel,
10:49in the order of the best sculpts,
10:51Chosen, Johnny Lawrence, John Kreese,
10:53then I would probably maybe say Terry Silver,
10:55which, again, Silver wasn't a bad figure at all,
10:57and then finally, low at the bottom,
10:59unfortunately, Daniel LaRusso of Daniel.
11:01Nice-looking figures, though.
11:03You know, again, even though,
11:05obviously, when we looked at Terry Silver,
11:07a decent-looking sculpt probably could have been improved
11:09a little bit. Unfortunately, though,
11:11it's ironic, though, that the sensei
11:13of the dojo Cobra Kai, the one that
11:15owns and runs the show, didn't come
11:17with any weapons. One good thing,
11:19at least, though, that Chosen had as many weapons
11:21that he has, and he only has, really, two hands
11:23to hold them, is that he has extra weapons
11:25to go around. I think, if anything,
11:27Terry Silver might end up stealing some of those,
11:29similar to the way he stole back Cobra Kai.
11:31While Chosen may not have won
11:33the respect of his uncles, Sato and Karate Kid II,
11:35the one thing, though, the character does win in
11:37is the best likeness so far from the
11:39Cobra Kai line. I think, not only does he
11:41look the most like the actor, but they also
11:43have aged him just the right way, as well.
11:45Like, Terry Silver, one of my big takeaways from the character
11:47was the fact that I felt his face was way
11:49too smooth. They needed to maybe make him
11:51a little older than when he actually appears in the figure,
11:53but, you know, Chosen, though, does
11:55things just right. Granted, though, to do things
11:57just right, it means that, from the neck down, they're using
11:59the same body as both Daniel LaRusso
12:01and Johnny Lawrence, but that's not a bad thing at all.
12:03I always really advocate that, if a company can get more mileage
12:05out of their molds, and it benefits collectors,
12:07meaning that we can then get more figures from that,
12:09then that's not a bad thing at all. I mean, geese
12:11are geese. I mean, yes, there were a few little changes.
12:13I think, actually, Silver's has a
12:15different geetop than what we actually get
12:17here for Chosen. So, again, they are changing
12:19some of the molds. They're not going to be consistent
12:21all across the board. Chosen also benefits
12:23from having a lot more accessories at his disposal,
12:25as well. More accessories than he'll
12:27ever be able to carry around on his own.
12:29He also comes in clear with a Miyagi-Do display stand,
12:31which, funny enough, is different
12:33from Daniel LaRusso's. Looking, though, at
12:35Chosen's and the way they outline the border
12:37and make the font of Miyagi-Do, as well
12:39as the symbol of the bonsai tree, bigger
12:41on his stand, makes me then look at Daniel LaRusso's
12:43and wish that Daniel's was the exact
12:45same. I might not always have
12:47the figures displayed on the display stands,
12:49but, though, if I decide to do that,
12:51I also have the benefit of an adjustable neck
12:53that plugs onto the side of it, that can also peg
12:55on the back of the figure's body. You know, again,
12:57if you want to have the figure in a more, you know, again,
12:59karate-kicking pose, you can pull it off
13:01a lot better by the use of the display
13:03stand adjustable neck. Just, though, be careful,
13:05because, at least with mine from Chosen, I
13:07find, like, the screws are way too tight. I'm gonna have to
13:09loosen those up a little bit,
13:11which is, though, funny, because sometimes you'll either have
13:13to loosen them up, in a case like Chosen's,
13:15or sometimes, if you have a slightly older display stand,
13:17a lot of times you may have to go back and tighten up
13:19the screws, as, over time, of course, they develop
13:21a little bit of looseness. Of the
13:23figures that we've looked at so far from the Cobra Kai,
13:25now, again, we've just gone back to this line with
13:27the now-released Chosen and Terry
13:29Silver, what do you feel has been the
13:31best likeness that Diamond Select have
13:33captured for the character? Also, speaking
13:35of Diamond, I'd like to thank the folks over at Diamond Select that did
13:37provide the sample of the brand-new Cobra Kai Chosen
13:39to Gucci, that we had the chance to have a look
13:41at in this review. Are you guys also excited for
13:43the brand-new season of Cobra Kai? Which, as far as
13:45I know, again, they're splitting it up in two parts,
13:47giving a chance, a breathing
13:49break in the middle, so that you can get the chance
13:51to watch the first part, and they're probably gonna leave it
13:53off with a tail, a tail hanger,
13:55I can't even get that, a cliff hanger,
13:57can't even get that all out, a cliff hanger,
13:59then, of course, it will be continued on in part two.
14:01Super excited for that. In the meantime, though,
14:03if you guys did want to certainly hit
14:05this video with a like, that is to say, of course, if you
14:07enjoyed the video, not tail hanging,
14:09cliff hanging. If you guys
14:11did want to stick around for more, though, make sure
14:13you don't leave this on a cliff hanger by
14:15turning on, as well, the bell notification and hitting
14:17the subscribe button. As always, guys, thanks for
14:19watching. See you guys next time.
14:29you
