00:27Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin written by Joe Troiano, illustrated by Susan Banta.
00:37One day in the pumpkin patch, the strangest little pumpkin hatched.
00:42Spookley wasn't like his friends, where they had curves, he had ends.
00:48Spookley was different, he was odd, he was rare.
00:52Spookley the pumpkin wasn't round, he was square.
01:00While the round pumpkins had fun rolling along, poor Spookley sat there shaped all wrong.
01:07He tried and tried with all his might, but he couldn't budge, he just sat tight.
01:13The other pumpkins teased him because he was square.
01:17Spookley wished he was round and could roll everywhere.
01:21That is, until one night when they all discovered it's fine to be round when the weather is
01:27fair, but there are times it's better to be square.
01:34Halloween was just a day away when a mighty storm blew across the bay.
01:40It tossed the round pumpkins to and fro.
01:43It snapped their vines, then off they'd go, bouncing left, slamming right, banging, bashing,
01:51out of sight.
01:53Spookley sat there filled with fright, but glad to be a square that night.
02:02Suddenly the fence gave way, three pumpkins rolled out and into the bay.
02:13Spookley knew what must be done, it was up to him, he was the one.
02:18He teetered, he tottered, he tipped, he tried, and finally flipped, he was on his side.
02:30Again he tipped, again he flopped, again he flipped, and then...
02:39He stopped, right in the gap where the fence had snapped.
02:44He blocked the way, the hole was capped.
02:47All of the pumpkins shouted, hooray, Spookley the square pumpkin has saved the day.
02:54Then a pumpkin hit him with a whack, he thought his shell would start to crack.
02:59Then another one hit him with a thump, and another one with a smack.
03:07Then one by one, a ton of pumpkins piled on the stack, with a bang and a bash and a crunch
03:14and a crash, and then it all went black.
03:24At dawn, when the storm had stopped, the farmer came out and checked his crop.
03:29He picked his pumpkins up one by one, and laid them out in the warm dry sun.
03:35And when the last was moved away, the farmer could see what saved the day.
03:40An odd-shaped pumpkin, short and dense, and wedged against the broken fence.
03:50Its shell was bruised, its stem was too, but there was brave little Spookley, sitting straight
03:57and strong and true.
03:59Right then and there, the farmer knew, of all the seeds he'd ever sown, Spookley's were
04:05the most special that had ever grown.
04:11And the next year, when it was time to sow, he sowed those seeds in every row.
04:17He watered and weeded and watched them grow.
04:20And oh, the morning about mid-June, when the pumpkin patch began to bloom, there were tiny
04:26pumpkins everywhere, hundreds and hundreds, most of them square.
04:33But some were cubes, and some rectangular.
04:39Some were flat, and others triangular.
04:43There was a bed of bright red ones, and two rows of blue.
04:48There were polka dot pumpkins, and rainbow ones too.
04:52There were thousands of colors, and hundreds of shapes.
04:55Oh, what a garden variety makes!
05:02Now every year on Halloween, Spookley's patch is quite a scene.
05:07People come from far and near to see what wonders grew that year.
05:11They stop, they gawk, they gaze, they stare.
05:17Then they pick a pumpkin that's round, triangular, or perfectly square.
05:26Now you know the story of how Spookley grew.
05:30Maybe someday, if you tell someone too, they'll go tell someone who will go tell another.
05:36And maybe one day, we will all discover.
05:39You can't judge a book, or a pumpkin, by its cover.
05:47I hope you enjoyed that story.
