00:00Welcome back to Cincinnati, 78 degrees and sunny currently, but the clouds are expected in later and they are expecting light rain.
00:10Adam Vinatieri will kick it away for the Patriots and back deep for the Bengals.
00:16Curtis Keeton, second year man out of James Madison.
00:21And the replacement officials did a good job, guys, with that coin toss.
00:25So far, so good. They're one for one.
00:29Opening day in the National Football League.
00:34These two teams met last year at Foxboro with the Patriots winning 16-13.
00:40This man, Adam Vinatieri, kicked a 22-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to win it for New England.
00:55Here we go. We're underway. Keeton, eight yards deep, will take a knee.
01:04So the Bengals will start from their own 20-yard line.
01:07John Kitna comes over as a free agent from Seattle as the starting quarterback.
01:13What do you see from John Kitna?
01:15Well, guys, what you get with John Kitna is you get some gritty, tough play at quarterback.
01:19He's mobile. He came over with Bob Rutkowski, his offensive coordinator in Seattle.
01:23So he's well aware of his passing offense.
01:25And he right now is a stable presence at that quarterback position for the Cincinnati Bengals.
01:30In his fifth year, 18-15 as a starting quarterback.
01:34First down and 10 from the 20.
01:37Dillon, the deep back, Lorenzo Neal, the up back.
01:40Here's Barry Dillon straight ahead with a running roll.
01:43Spins and gets up to the 30-yard line, close to a first down.
01:48Matt Stephens with the tackle.
01:50Offensively for the Cincinnati Bengals.
01:53They pride themselves on running the football.
01:55Richmond Webb comes over from Miami.
01:57He's a veteran. O'Dwyer, Graham, Goff, and Willie Anderson at right tackle.
02:01The backs and receivers.
02:03Corey Dillon, one of the best in the business.
02:05Now he has a great blocking back in Lorenzo Neal who comes over from Tennessee.
02:10And the offensive coordinator from Seattle, Bob Rutkowski.
02:14Second down and one.
02:16Here's Kitna, throws it out of the backfield, finds Dillon with the first down.
02:20Gets over the 35 to the 37.
02:23Teddy Bruschi with the tackle, but it's a gain of eight.
02:26Defensively for the New England Patriots.
02:29Some changes on the defensive line.
02:31Roman Pfeiffer starts at right end.
02:33Willie McGinnis didn't play much of the preseason, so he will be coming off the bench.
02:37Mike Grable is the left linebacker.
02:40Cox and Bruschi.
02:42Meanwhile, Otis Smith and Ty Law in the secondary with Malloy and Matt Stevens.
02:46At the safety positions.
02:48And Romeo Prunell is the defensive coordinator.
02:51First down and ten from the 37-yard line for the Bengals.
02:55Their opening drive.
02:56Dillon over the left side, keeps his feet going, lowers his shoulder, and gets to the 45-yard line.
03:06Watch Richmond Webb and Matt O'Dwyer on the left side.
03:10Third time they've gotten the ball into the hands of Corey Dillon.
03:15Every time they do it, they're making yards.
03:17And did you see Corey Dillon take Matt Stevens for a ride, put his head down,
03:21and the safety went flying back about three or four yards there.
03:24And that is some power and strength.
03:26And that's what you get with Corey Dillon, coach.
03:28Another spread formation.
03:29They're widening, they're spreading out the defense.
03:31Second down and short.
03:33They need two yards from the 45.
03:35Here's the draw play.
03:36Dillon again.
03:38Dillon has been successful running the football.
03:40Anthony Pleasant, 12-year veteran, making the tackle for the Patriots.
03:45And so far, Dillon, three carries, 17 yards.
03:48You know what I like about that, Gus?
03:50Not only the carries, but he caught the ball in the flat.
03:52They didn't use Corey Dillon in the passing game much at all last year.
03:55Now, there's a weapon.
03:56You get him out in the flat one-on-one with a linebacker, he can make people miss.
04:00Get him the ball as many times in as many ways as you can.
04:04Coach, they're taking him out here on third and short.
04:06I told him yesterday, he'd be in the lineup on third down most of the day.
04:09Brandon Bennett is the backup to Corey Dillon.
04:13Hitting a short drop, tipped at the line of scrimmaging.
04:16Complete.
04:17Bobby Hamilton gets a hand on the football.
04:20And the Cincinnati Drive stalls at the 45-yard line.
04:25That will bring in Nick Harris to punt it away.
04:27Some of the fans thought that was interference by Ty Law.
04:30But once that ball is tipped, there's no interference.
04:34So, Nick Harris, rookie out of Cal, ready to kick it away.
04:39Troy Brown, a dangerous receiver and return man, stands at the 10-yard line.
04:46Good snap.
04:49Wobbly kick, Harris.
04:53And it's fair caught by Brown at the 20-yard line, a 34-yard punt.
04:58So, coming up, it'll be Drew Bledsoe and the Patriots on offense.
05:04Bangles coming up empty on offense.
05:07Now, New England will get an opportunity.
05:10Bill Belichick, second year as the head coach in New England.
05:14And in two years, he's almost entirely revamped the lineup.
05:1838 new players.
05:22And his team starts from their own 21-yard line.
05:25Drew Bledsoe with Mark Edwards and Antoine Smith behind him.
05:29And Antoine Smith behind him.
05:34Quick strike.
05:35Bert Emanuel with the reception spin.
05:37Picks up maybe a yard and a half.
05:40Tackle on the play made by Artrell Hawkins.
05:42Drew Bledsoe, three-time pro bowler.
05:45And Coach Weiss, he is a player.
05:47He is.
05:48And Brent and I were just talking, what a mature guy he has become.
05:50He's only 29 years old.
05:52Been the starter for this ball club for nine years.
05:54Only Brett Favre has started for a team longer than that.
05:57But he has taken over the leadership role.
05:59One of the captains on this football team.
06:01Quick arm, good feet, a lot of size.
06:04Signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract
06:07that should keep him a patriot through the end of his career.
06:11Second down and nine from the 22.
06:14Bledsoe out of the shotgun.
06:18Nice snap.
06:19Here's the handoff going to Antoine Smith over the left side.
06:24No room for him.
06:27Takiyo spikes with the tackle offensively for the New England Patriots.
06:31Grant Williams starts at left tackle.
06:33They thought Matt Light would be the starter, the rookie out of Purdue.
06:36But they go with the veteran on opening day.
06:40Backs and receivers.
06:42Antoine Smith with Buffalo the last few years.
06:44Mark Edwards with Cleveland last year.
06:46Brown and Emanuel.
06:47Rod Rutledge is the tight end.
06:51Charlie Weiss is the offensive coordinator for the Patriots.
06:56Third down and eight from the 23-yard line.
06:59Split backfield.
07:00Bledsoe to pass in trouble.
07:02Bledsoe goes down at the 19.
07:06Darrell Williams, backup safety, shot the gap and made the sack.
07:11Paul Booker with pressure as well.
07:16Now Gus, there's been a lot of talk about this Patriots offensive line.
07:19But that was a coverage sack.
07:21Third down.
07:22You've got to go ahead and get rid of the ball.
07:24You know the blitz is coming.
07:25Here come the Bengals.
07:26Bledsoe knows he's got to get rid of that ball on the first hit.
07:29Or there's going to be problems.
07:31And the Bengals excited about their defensive line.
07:34They only had 26 sacks last year.
07:36Had 15 in the preseason.
07:39Here's Lee Johnson.
07:40Sends it away.
07:41Peter Warwick at the 34.
07:44Makes the first man miss.
07:45Warwick in the center of the field.
07:47Still making people miss.
07:49Gets inside New England territory.
07:51But flags are all over the field.
07:53Matt Stephens with the special teams tackle.
07:56And it's a 45-yard punch.
08:00Teddy Bruschi's over there telling the Cincinnati Bengals,
08:03Hey, you clipped us, you held us, you did everything.
08:06This one's got a little bit of a grudge match going in this thing.
08:09Both ball clubs coming off of subpar years need to get going fast.
08:14Now, Lee Johnson punted that ball.
08:16He needed holding the call against the Bengals.
08:19He needed 43 yards to become the all-time leader in punting yardage
08:23in the National Football League.
08:25Ron Stark was number one.
08:27And that was a 45-yard punt.
08:29So it looks like Lee will have the record.
08:31Hey, party time.
08:32Party time.
08:33There you go.
08:34Coach, that was one of your punters.
08:35Excellent.
08:36With a return.
08:37Illegal block in the back.
08:39Return team.
08:4110 yards.
08:42He spotted a foul.
08:43He'll be first down.
08:45I drafted Lee Johnson out of BYU in 1988, Super Bowl year.
08:5017 years later, he's the all-time leader.
08:53Back to Cincinnati after this.
08:57The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Southwest Airlines.
09:01Celebrating 30 years of freedom.
09:0330 years, one mission.
09:04Low fares.
09:05IBM.
09:06Taking e-business and your business to the next level.
09:09And by Sutter.
09:10Now with two distinctively different car lines, the L-Series and S-Series.
09:19Welcome back to Cincinnati.
09:21It's been raining off and on all day.
09:23But the sun has come out for the beginning of this football game.
09:27The Spangles have it at their own 28 first down.
09:29Marco Pataglia in motion.
09:31Here's Kitna going up top.
09:33He's got Darnay Scott but overthrows him.
09:36When Lee Johnson first came into this league in 1988,
09:40he started trying to sell me stocks and bonds right away.
09:43He told me on the sidelines that he sold you a stock.
09:45He said a tank.
09:46He did.
09:47Yeah, it's gone in the tank with the rest of the market.
09:49Chances of me recovering.
09:51Marco's going to get up over 10,000 again.
09:53Look at those numbers, though.
09:54You've got to be around a lot of teams that need to punt a lot in order to get those numbers.
09:58Coach, I figured it out.
09:59Over 28 miles of punting yards.
10:02Long.
10:04Long walks.
10:06Second down and 10.
10:09Here's Dillon running.
10:11Gets a couple of yards in the box on the upper right-hand part of your screen.
10:17Those are current scores in the National Football League.
10:21Trying to keep you up to date on what's going on around the league.
10:24We call it the shadow box.
10:28And we saw this Cincinnati team go deep for Darnay Scott here a couple of plays ago,
10:32and that's something they didn't do a lot of last year.
10:34They've got to take some shots down the field.
10:36You can't hit them all, but you know they want to get the ball in Scott's hands.
10:39Third down, seven from the 31.
10:41Cincinnati needs to go to the 38-yard line for a first down.
10:46Kitna throwing a strike underneath.
10:48Caught by Darnay Scott.
10:50He gets the midfield.
10:52It's a gain of 19 yards.
10:54It's a gain of 19 yards.
10:57Terrific protection.
10:59He looks at the inside.
11:02The Bengals picked it all up.
11:04Watch coming to the inside.
11:05You're going to get a twist.
11:06Coming to the inside.
11:07Everybody's picking up.
11:09You can get a back out of there.
11:11And when you get time, you get a deep over route.
11:13The quarterback and the receiver are going to usually win
11:15because that's just tough to cover when you're 18 yards downfield.
11:18But it's all underneath help.
11:19That's exactly it, Coach.
11:21Darnay Scott missed all of last year after injuring himself during training camp.
11:25But he is back and 100%.
11:28Kitna again firing underneath.
11:30It's caught at the 40.
11:31Darnay Scott still running.
11:33Makes another man miss and gets to the 30-yard line.
11:37It's a Bucky Jones with the tackle.
11:39Back-to-back gains of 19 yards.
11:46You're going to watch Darnay Scott go one-on-one with Otis Smith.
11:48Give him a little head and shoulder outside.
11:50Come back underneath on the slant.
11:51Ball is thrown a little high.
11:53Hangs onto it.
11:54Look at him bounce off.
11:55You think that leg is healed up?
11:56It looks like it's healed up to me.
12:00Corey Dillon trying to break it back.
12:02Spins.
12:03And it's taken down by Bobby Hamilton.
12:06Darnay Scott broken leg.
12:07Doesn't look like his leg is injured at all now, Coach Weiss.
12:10I don't think so either.
12:12You know, the one thing about this ball, the trend is already set.
12:16Keep giving the ball to Corey Dillon.
12:17Throw him a little wide flare.
12:18Left side, right side.
12:19He bounces outside as well as he runs inside.
12:21They told us yesterday he was the fastest guy on the football team.
12:24He's your running back.
12:26Dillon out of the game right now.
12:28Brandon Bennett in to give him a rest.
12:30Dillon so far five carries, 22 yards.
12:33Second down and eight from the New England 29.
12:36Kitna throws the out pattern.
12:39Caught by Rod Dugan who cradles it and slides out of bounds.
12:44They're spreading it around, Brent.
12:46They're not just throwing, trying to find Darnay Scott or Peter Warrick.
12:49They're getting the ball to a lot of people.
12:52You know, Coach, it's nice to get Warrick involved.
12:55But I think Darnay Scott, after coming back from that broken leg,
12:58they want to get him some touches early, get that confidence going.
13:01And right now, he's not even thinking about the leg.
13:03He's thinking about beating Otis Smith deep.
13:05And it's only arc so far.
13:07Here's Kitna.
13:08Loses the ball.
13:09John Kitna.
13:10Here's Kitna.
13:11Loses the ball.
13:12John Kitna fumbles.
13:14And let's see who has it.
13:15New England says they have it.
13:18Kitna fumbled the ball 17 times last year for the Seattle Seahawks.
13:23And that's the first of the season.
13:25Now, it looked like up here, Coach, the ball just slid out of his hands.
13:28It's a little humid up there.
13:29Maybe it got hit.
13:30You can see him re-gripping it right there.
13:32And it does slide right out of his hands.
13:34He didn't have that grip right away trying to adjust the ball.
13:37Roman Pfeiffer to recover.
13:40No score.
13:45639 to go, first quarter of play.
13:47We get our first turnover of the game.
13:49John Kitna fumbling.
13:51Drew Bledsoe taking over.
13:53That ball tipped at the line of scrimmage.
13:56Looks like Vaughn Booker got a hand on it.
14:00And let's look at that last play.
14:01Watch the second step here.
14:02Watch John Kitna rotate the ball all the way around.
14:06Right there, all the way around, trying to find the laces.
14:08It's humid.
14:09It's sweaty out there.
14:10Sweat's coming down his wrist.
14:12And you see him trying to re-grip.
14:13And the ball slides right out of his hands.
14:15Usually, you just rotate on the axis.
14:17You don't turn it that way.
14:19Second down, 10.
14:21Edwards, Antoine Smith in the backfield for Bledsoe.
14:24Second man through is Antoine Smith trying to get outside.
14:27Lowers his shoulder.
14:29And Antoine Smith goes out at the 33-yard line.
14:33Meanwhile, let's take a look at the Bengals' defense.
14:37Up front, they're getting more and more aggressive.
14:39Vaughn Booker, Oliver Gibson, the former Steeler,
14:41Tony Williams playing with a broken finger,
14:43and Renard Wilson.
14:45The linebackers all in their fourth year, all very quick.
14:48Foley, Simmons, and Takeo Spikes.
14:50And in the secondary, where they are a little vulnerable,
14:53Heath Hopkins, the corners, Hall, Carter, the safeties,
14:57Mark Duffner, former head coach at the University of Maryland,
15:00and Holy Cross is the defensive coordinator.
15:04Third down and eight from the 34.
15:05Bledsoe rolling out of the pocket.
15:07Bledsoe with room, looking for the first down.
15:10Dives, and let's see.
15:13Was his knee on the ground?
15:15You know what, Gus?
15:16That is exactly right.
15:17His knee wasn't on the ground.
15:18You're going to see his body land and bounce off and go forward,
15:22and they're going to give him the mark,
15:24and I think he's going to get the first down.
15:25Well, he should get as far as he can go
15:27until something other than his hand touches the ground.
15:30Hand or feet, obviously.
15:31Now look at him get airborne, and he bounces
15:34and rolls back over and gets the first down.
15:36That's some savvy.
15:39This is actually good officiating.
15:41We haven't talked about it yet,
15:42but the officials here are replacement officials,
15:44and they've got that right on the line.
15:46Eight-yard game.
15:47First down for the Patriots from their own 42.
15:57And a whistle.
15:58Trick play.
16:04Dick LeBeau.
16:06He was my defensive coordinator for eight years.
16:08A terrific coach.
16:09Motivator.
16:10Players love him.
16:11Of course, he played in Detroit for years.
16:13He knows how the players feel.
16:16And you think he was on the button, Coach?
16:17You think he's challenging that spot?
16:19He may be, and what he's going to do,
16:22he's going to ask the official some questions
16:24to find out if it's worth it.
16:26You know, you don't want to waste your time out.
16:27Well, especially with the new officials,
16:29you want to let them know that they're not going to
16:30just get away with every call.
16:31You've got to at least stay on top of them
16:33and work the officials.
16:34Now, the veteran referees wouldn't fall for that trick.
16:37They've all been around.
16:38Hey, guys, talk about the officiating situation in Europe.
16:41Give us your opinions.
16:43Well, one thing, they're calling fewer penalties.
16:45I think that's actually good for the game.
16:47Let them play a little bit.
16:49These officials, though, many of whom are going to be
16:51NFL officials or would-be NFL officials in the future anyway,
16:54so these are not guys just off the street.
16:56They're Arena Football League, European Football League,
16:59major college.
17:00They've been out there a lot with some good football players.
17:07Your referee today, John Smith from Virginia State.
17:13And another look, Bledsoe diving ahead.
17:15Well, you don't want Drew Bledsoe, your quarterback,
17:18in the second series of the game, going full out extension.
17:22And it's great they rolled the pocket.
17:24It's great they moved it.
17:25He was going for the first down,
17:26and I think that just shows the competitor that Drew is.
17:29Man, you've got to be a little concerned
17:31when you're Bill Belichick and there goes your quarterback.
17:34That's absolutely right.
17:35But the rule is, as far as he can go,
17:37he can roll over a lot of defensive players
17:39until his knee or any other part of his body
17:41other than his hands or his feet touches the ground.
17:44First down and 10 from the 42 for the Patriots.
17:50Antoine Smith running over the right side.
17:52Vaughn Booker there to stop him.

18:08Patriots 5-11 last season.
18:12They have the fifth-place schedule.
18:14Great opportunities.
18:16They open up, though, with two games on the road
18:19before going home.
18:21Carolina next week.
18:22Here's the pitch.
18:23Smith stops, starts, gets going forward
18:27and close to midfield.
18:28Corey Hall to safety with the tackle.
18:30It's a gain of four.
18:32We've seen Antoine Smith outside a few times.
18:35His strength over the years has been running inside
18:37between the tackles.
18:38You see the pitch right here going to the right.
18:40Watch the little juke move that he gives
18:42to a little inside to go outside.
18:44Freezing linebacker right there.
18:45Bang!
18:46Jumps right around Brian Simmons.
18:48Nice move by Antoine Smith.
18:50I'll tell you what, Brian Simmons,
18:52he's not an easy guy to make freeze out there.
18:54He is one of the fastest linebackers
18:55in the National Football League.
18:57Third down and five from the 47-yard line.
19:00They need to get to the Cincinnati 48 for first down.
19:04Here comes the finger-pointing.
19:06He moved first.
19:07That's right.
19:08You did that, Brent.
19:09I think it was the Bengals.
19:10I think Drew Bledsoe on the hard count,
19:11and that's what you've got to look for.
19:12Third and five or less.
19:14You've got to give your guys a crack at it.
19:16See if you can get those guys,
19:17those anxious young guys of the Bengals,
19:20to jump offside.
19:21Dead ball.
19:22False start.
19:23Six to three.
19:25I'm wrong.
19:28Unbelievably wrong.
19:29Yeah.
19:30Joe Andrews is the right guard.
19:32Tuesday on CBS, after three months of conniving,
19:35lying, and cheating,
19:36the Big Brother game is hotter than ever.
19:38Nine house guests have been eliminated,
19:40three remain,
19:41but who will walk away with a cool half-million dollars?
19:44Don't miss an all-new Big Brother Tuesday on CBS.
19:47I thought you were talking about us for a minute there.
19:50Never, never, never.
19:52Third down and 10
19:53from the 42-yard line.
19:57And number 77 this time moves.
19:59It's Mike Compton, the left guard.
20:03And you can bet Drew Bledsoe is trying to work a hard count
20:06to draw the opposition off.
20:07Mike Compton's first year with the ball club.
20:09He was a center with the Detroit Lions last year.
20:18So it remains third down
20:20and 15 now,
20:22and the Patriots have to go to the Cincinnati
20:2648-yard line for a first down.
20:29You know, going back to Compton,
20:30you're used to bringing that ball up.
20:31You really concentrate on the count.
20:32A guard sometimes just moves on motion.
20:35J.R. Redman in the backfield
20:37for the Pats.
20:41Ron Rutledge goes in motion.
20:43Play action.
20:44Bledsoe sets up.
20:46Fires to the sideline.
20:47Compton heard a manual,
20:49trails the football,
20:50and picks up a first down.
20:52Nicely done for the Patriots.
20:54And you see when Drew Bledsoe has time,
20:56he can just gas you,
20:58and Bert Emanuel runs what we call
21:00a comeback route.
21:01Does a great job getting downfield.
21:03Watch Drew.
21:04Stand, good protection in the pocket,
21:06step up,
21:07and Emanuel coming right back down the line,
21:09knowing where that first down marker is.
21:11Let's watch Drew's reaction.
21:13Here we go.
21:14We'll take it.
21:15Move the chains.
21:16And he went right up to Tom Carter.
21:17He's a nipple back.
21:18He's the fifth back in the ballgame
21:19on pass and bounce.
21:20Here's Bledsoe to pass again.
21:22This time on first down,
21:23dumps it over the middle.
21:24And it is caught.
21:26Charles Johnson
21:30with the reception.
21:31Johnson played for Philadelphia last year,
21:34released by the Eagles.
21:35Hawkins with the stop.
21:38And we talked to Drew Bledsoe
21:39about his receivers
21:40and about missing Terry Glenn,
21:42who's out and had a suspension
21:45and has been out for the year as well.
21:47And he said he feels so much more comfortable
21:49with his receiving crew this year.
21:51It's a huge difference.
21:52He wouldn't have felt that way last year
21:53in losing Terry Glenn.
21:54But he said this year,
21:55he's got some veterans
21:56and guys who know how to make it happen.
21:58Three receiver package,
21:59including the tight end.
22:00He used the handoff,
22:01going to Antoine Smith,
22:02back into the game.
22:03And back to Terry Glenn,
22:05the prolific New England receiver.
22:07He was suspended by the league
22:09for four games
22:10for violating the substance abuse policy.
22:13Still could have come the training camp.
22:16However, he chose not to come to training camp.
22:19So inevitably,
22:21Bill Belichick had to make a decision
22:23for the sake of the team
22:25and he suspended Glenn for the entire year.
22:29And that went to arbitration
22:31and Bill Belichick,
22:32when we asked about it yesterday,
22:33said the arbitrator gave us explicit orders,
22:35no comment.
22:37That's perfect for Coach Belichick
22:39because he doesn't like to talk a lot anyway,
22:40especially to us.
22:41Here's Bledsoe,
22:43dumping it over the middle.
22:44Troy Brown with the catch.
22:45Gets his shoulder square
22:47all the way down inside the Cincinnati 15-yard line.
22:51Chris Carter with the tackle.
22:54Let me tell you,
22:55Troy Brown has been with Drew Bledsoe for nine years.
22:58When it's a clutch down,
22:59that's a guy that had two people on him.
23:01And Coach, third down,
23:02you expect some type of blitz.
23:03You're going to get him running a drag route
23:04right across the linebackers.
23:05He runs right by Brian Simmons.
23:07Simmons got to step up and pop him.
23:09He didn't see Troy Brown coming across
23:11and Brown gets that ball,
23:12goes right by him,
23:13gets his shoulder square like Gus said,
23:14and gets some big yards after the catch.
23:16Troy Brown coming off career highs
23:18in 2,083 catches for 944 yards.
23:22Tenth play of the drive that started
23:24at the New England 32.
23:26Antoine Smith running over the left side
23:28and he's met by a number of white jerseys.
23:33Takiyo Spikes leading the way.
23:35And Coach, this is where the Patriots
23:37have to be better this year in the red zone.
23:38Not that they were anemic last year.
23:40I think that really hurt their team.
23:41They couldn't convert.
23:42They need to get points.
23:43They need to get touchdowns.
23:45Too many times they settle for field goals
23:46and you think Drew Bledsoe misses
23:48the old big tight end Ben Coates in this area?
23:51Are you going to leave anything for him to say?
23:53I mean, you said everything.
23:55No, you know what?
23:56Ben Coates was the key to everything you just said.
23:58He was the security blanket.
24:01This year it's Mark Edwards.
24:03Mark Edwards, by the way,
24:04let's throw this one in,
24:05bought 200 tickets for this game.
24:07He grew up, went to high school
24:08right here in Cincinnati.
24:09And that's the end of the first quarter of play.
24:11New England knocking on the door here in Cincinnati.
24:15The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Budweiser.
24:19With a crisp, clean, refreshing taste
24:21you'll find in no other beer.
24:23And by America Online.
24:24So easy to use, no wonder it's number one.
24:27There's never been a better time to get online.
24:34Welcome back to Cincinnati.
24:35No score as we begin the second quarter of play.
24:38Gus Johnson along with Brent Jones and Sam Weiser
24:42Well, in the way we thought they'd do it.
24:44Cory Dillon for the Bengals
24:46and they're throwing the ball for the Patriots.
24:51New England inside the 15-yard line.
24:54Bledsoe to the end zone.
24:56Touchdown, Troy Brown.
25:00And the Patriots are on the board.
25:04And the Patriots have had some success
25:06running Antoine Smith inside.
25:08Watch the play action.
25:09Get those linebackers the safeties to suck up.
25:11Watch Cory Hall.
25:12You see him jump on the play action fake.
25:14There's Troy Brown sneaking right behind him.
25:16That's what you want.
25:17That's what the running game does for you.
25:19It allows you to use your play action.
25:23Troy Brown, first touchdown of the year
25:26for the New England Patriots.
25:29Troy Brown, first touchdown of the year
25:32for the Patriots.
25:34Extra point is up and it is good.
25:3711 play drive covering 68 yards.
25:40They ate up close to 7 minutes.
25:42New England by 7.
25:527-0 New England
25:54on the Troy Brown 14-yard touchdown.
25:5714-yard touchdown from Drew Bledsoe.
25:59Had four touchdowns last year,
26:00so he's off to a good start
26:02with his first of the season.
26:05Adam Vinatieri will kick it away
26:07for the Patriots.
26:09Back deep, Curtis Keeton
26:11standing at his own goal line.
26:14Keeton replacing Tremaine Mack,
26:16who was a pro bowler here in Cincinnati,
26:19as a kick return man.
26:21But they felt that he'd lost it
26:23and they decided to give Keeton an opportunity.
26:26And one thing you gotta watch out with
26:27a young kick returner,
26:29trying to make too many things happen
26:30and losing control of that ball.
26:32Towards the sideline start
26:34from the 5-yard line.
26:36Keeton up the right side,
26:38cuts it across the field with a roll.
26:40Here's Keeton with the blocker.
26:42Keeton to the outside.
26:44Keeton down the sideline
26:46out of bounds at the 30.
26:49Maybe they made the right decision.
26:52Leonard Myers gets him,
26:54a gain of 64.
26:56Now you know what's unique
26:58about Keeton's return.
26:59Watch when he gets up field,
27:01about the 25.
27:02Instead of going out of bounds
27:03right there, one yard to go,
27:05he cuts it all the way across field.
27:07Most returners would have just
27:08put their shoulder down
27:09and gone out of bounds.
27:10Has a line of blockers down the field.
27:12You see them go to strip the ball,
27:13covers it up.
27:15A lot of kickoff returners
27:16close their eyes when they get
27:17about six guys around them like that.
27:19They got good reason to.
27:21He didn't.
27:22He kept his eyes open,
27:23found the other hole.
27:25Cincinnati starts at the
27:26New England 30-yard line.
27:28Peter Warwick in motion.
27:30Here's the handoff to Dillon
27:31over the left side,
27:32and Dillon powers forward,
27:35gets to the 25.
27:37Tackle on the play made by Ty Long.
27:40They were looking for man-to-man
27:41coverage in the head of zone,
27:42so they didn't have quite enough
27:43blockers for Dillon on the left side.
27:46Because we talked about the
27:47play action on the Patriots
27:48touchdown, this Cincinnati team
27:50should have the best play action
27:52game in the NFL with Corey Dillon
27:53back there.
27:54Boy, if you hang on to those
27:55fakes, you should get linebackers
27:57and safety sucking up all day.
27:59You bet.
28:00Dillon, six carries, 26 yards,
28:02gained four in the last play.
28:04Getting to the pass,
28:05finds Dillon in the flats.
28:07Dillon skipping forward, spins.
28:10Taken down at the 23 by
28:12Brian Cox.
28:14Coming up on the next
28:15Tell Halftime Report, join Jim,
28:17Mike, Randy, and Jerry for all
28:19the scores and highlights,
28:20plus a preview of the U.S.
28:22Open men's final between
28:23fourth-seeded Layton Hewitt
28:24and tenth-seeded Pete Sampras.
28:26That's coming up on the next
28:27Tell Halftime Report.
28:30Well, I'm pulling for Pete
28:31Sampras, I don't mind telling you.
28:33Yes, no question.
28:34He was living in Tampa when I
28:35was coaching down there.
28:36That was before I got fired.
28:40Third down and three from the
28:4123.
28:42They need to go to the 20.
28:43Here's the pitch to Dillon.
28:44Dillon stringing it out,
28:45turns the corner.
28:48Depends on the spot.
28:49I believe he's a couple of
28:51inches short.
28:52There's a viper keeping him
28:54from that first down.
28:55Guys, when you toss the ball,
28:57you've got to make sure your
28:58tackle gets out.
28:59Watch Willie Anderson,
29:00and he gets bumped off,
29:01and he's not, he's trailing
29:03Corey Dillon.
29:04You've got to have your lead
29:05blocker out there.
29:06He just had some penetration,
29:07got knocked off, and Dillon
29:08wasn't in front of him,
29:09had nobody to block for him.
29:10And the fans want him to go
29:12for it.
29:13Dick LeBow, celebrating his
29:1464th birthday today, decides to
29:17go for it.
29:18Ten seconds left on the clock.
29:20They may end up calling a
29:21timeout right here.
29:24Kitna at the line.
29:26Three seconds, and he does
29:28call a timeout.
29:30Great recognition.
29:31Coach Weiss, you may have a
29:34future in this game.
29:35Back in a moment.
29:38Seven to nothing, New England.
29:41Fourth down and one.
29:42Dick LeBow decides to go for it.
29:45I love that.
29:46You've got to change the
29:47mentality here in Cincinnati.
29:49Sooner or later, that's his
29:50biggest challenge.
29:51Not physical on the field,
29:52but the mentality.
29:54He's got a great running back
29:56who lines up.
29:58Marco Battaglia in motion.
30:01Corey Dillon over the right
30:03side.
30:04Goes down.
30:06Matt O'Dwyer coming around.
30:08Offensive guard's going to come
30:10right around here.
30:11Watch him pull.
30:12He makes a key block just
30:14enough.
30:15Dillon's got one guy to beat.
30:17He's got to beat him on his own,
30:19and he's good enough to do it.
30:21Teddy Bruschi had an
30:23opportunity to get to the
30:25line.
30:26He's got to get to the line.
30:28He's got to get to the line.
30:30He's got to get to the line.
30:32He's got to get to the line.
30:34He's got an opportunity to get
30:36to Dillon, but he couldn't bring
30:37him down.
30:38First down from the 18th,
30:39Kittna looking in the end zone
30:41and complete.
30:42No flags on the play.
30:44Darnay Scott, the intended
30:45receiver.
30:50Kittna under some pressure.
30:52And Roman Pfeiffer, the old
30:54Jets linebacker, coming through
30:55on a crosstown.
30:56Watch him coming right up the
30:57gut.
30:58Inside, gets right in John
30:59Kittna's face.
31:00Takes a shot to the head.
31:03Roman Pfeiffer and Willie
31:04McGinnis, number 55 there,
31:06usually play the same position,
31:07but they're getting them both in
31:08there for pass rush purposes.
31:12Unusual on first and ten with
31:13the running team.
31:14Anthony Pleasant off the bench
31:16into the game for New England.
31:20So it's second down and ten from
31:22the 18-yard line.
31:24Cincinnati in the red zone last
31:27in the NFL.
31:32Neal and Dillon in the back
31:33field.
31:36I think that red zone statistic
31:38is as good an indication of
31:39whether you're a winner or
31:40loser as any stat that goes.
31:44Kittna, Dillon looking, picking
31:48inside the 15, down to about the
31:5112-yard line.
31:52Anthony Pleasant there to trip
31:53him up.
31:54And you saw John Kittna
31:55audible at the line of
31:56scrimmage.
31:57And it's funny, he was talking
31:58to us yesterday about audibleing
31:59to a run.
32:00And usually he passes his
32:01backside one way or another to
32:02let the running back know which
32:03way.
32:04He said the first time he did
32:05it, Corey Dillon came up to him
32:06and said, I don't need that.
32:08I know all the fronts.
32:09I know all the defenses.
32:10We know the running game here in
32:11Cincinnati.
32:12Leave me alone.
32:13Just give me the ball.
32:16Third down and four from the 12.
32:19They need to go to the eight for
32:20first down.
32:21Kittna to pass.
32:23Kittna in trouble.
32:25To the sideline.
32:26Intended for Tony McGee
32:27incomplete.
32:30Boy, how Richmond Webb got away
32:31with a hold.
32:32I'll never know on that one
32:33because not only did he hold one
32:34guy, he held two guys.
32:36I guess you get bonus points or
32:37something.
32:38And that was a pretty darn good
32:39throw for getting out of the
32:40pocket and getting pressure.
32:41Usually Tony McGee makes that
32:42grab.
32:46Here comes the hole right now.
32:47You'll see it right there.
32:49Oh, yeah, that is good.
32:50Hold on.
32:51Hold on.
32:52Hold on.
32:54Double hold.
32:56Brings on Neil Rackers to attempt
32:58a 32-yard field goal.
33:00He was 12 of 21 last year for the
33:02Bengals in his second season out
33:05of Illinois.
33:07Flag's on the play.
33:10That's the illegal motion by the
33:11Bengals so they wouldn't stop the
33:12call.
33:13We had some movement over on the
33:14left side, I think.
33:19And it will go against
33:20Cincinnati.
33:23How about these referees now?
33:24They've got to be a little
33:25nervous in doing this first
33:26ballgame, but they're doing a
33:27good job.
33:30Just remember, you can't make
33:31bad calls if you don't make a
33:32lot of calls.
33:33That is true.
33:34Your percentage goes up.
33:35That's right.
33:36I thought about that.
33:37I think, you know, the players
33:38love that.
33:39I think they do.
33:40I really think the fans like it.
33:42It keeps the tempo of the game
33:43going.
33:44Rackers pushed back five yards.
33:47This is a 37-yard attempt.
33:49Nick Harris the holder.
33:50Harris down and up and good.
33:56But a flag is on the play at the
33:5720-yard line.
33:59You know, Gus, I think we've got
34:00the same thing.
34:01When the holder goes to look, and
34:04it might actually be against the
34:05Patriots, but it looked like there
34:06was a delay in the snap there.
34:17So the Bengals get on the board.
34:207-3, our score.
34:28Close ball game here in the
34:29first half of play.
34:307-3, New England on top of
34:32Cincinnati.
34:34Now, which AFC team will have
34:35the most regular season wins in
34:372001?
34:38Guys, I ask you the question.
34:40Miami, Indianapolis, Baltimore,
34:41Tennessee, Denver, or Oakland.
34:43Or choose another team.
34:44Just log on and cast your vote at
34:46NFL.com.
34:48We'll have our experts answer
34:49after this.
34:51J.R. Redman five yards into the
34:53end zone.
34:54And he decides to take a knee.
34:58So a commercial coming up right
34:59now with the score 7-3, New
35:01England with the ball and the
35:03lead.
35:08The NFL on CBS is sponsored by

35:25Luxury with attitude.
35:31Welcome back to Cincinnati.
35:337-3, the Patriots lead the
35:34Bengals.
35:35Okay, guys, who do you think?
35:36Which AFC team will have the
35:37most wins?
35:38Well, Sam's going with the
35:39Indianapolis Colts.
35:41They've been close enough.
35:42Peyton Manning is a terrific
35:43quarterback.
35:44Well, I'm going to go with the
35:45Indians.
35:46Oh, that's a good reason to go
35:48for him.
35:49Well, it might have been
35:50subliminal when you talk about
35:51D.
35:52Hey, don't ever use the word
35:53subliminal in front of me again.
35:55Mark Edwards, excuse me.
35:57Yeah, Mark Edwards with the
35:59handoff goes forward, gets to
36:00the 25-yard line, picks up five
36:02yards on the play.
36:04And Drew Bilezzo was really
36:05excited when we talked about
36:07Edwards yesterday.
36:08You know, I played with Mark
36:09Edwards in San Francisco, came
36:10over from Cleveland.
36:11One of the few bright spots in
36:12Cleveland.
36:13There's not a whole lot, if
36:14you've watched the Browns.
36:15But he's a great receiver out of
36:16the backfield.
36:17Good locker room guy, good
36:18leader.
36:19The Browns had no idea how to
36:20use him.
36:21He's going to be instrumental, I
36:22think, in this Patriots offense.
36:24Second and five from the 25.
36:28Antoine Smith straight ahead
36:29with a big gap over the left
36:31side.
36:32Gets up to the 36-yard line, a
36:34gain of 11.
36:37Now Saturday, the Home Depot SEC
36:39football on CBS gets off with a
36:41bang when John Henderson and the
36:43Tennessee Vols get after Jabbar
36:45Gaffney and the Florida Gators.
36:47The excitement begins with Tim
36:48Brando and Spencer Tillman on
36:51Papa John's College Football
36:52today.
36:53For more college football news,
36:54go to cbs.sportsline.com, AOL
36:57keyword, CBS Sportsline.
37:04So far, Antoine Smith, seven
37:05carries, 24 yards.
37:07They give it to him again, and
37:08Smith carrying the male, gets
37:10over the 40, up to the 43.
37:13Bernard Whittington, the former
37:14Colt, with the tackle, but after
37:16a gain of six yards.
37:18Coach, I think Antoine Smith in
37:21top form is what this Patriots
37:23team needs.
37:24They need a go-to back.
37:25He told us that the things in
37:27Buffalo just didn't quite work
37:28out, kind of like a bad marriage,
37:29but he feels like he's going to
37:30get 20 carries a game here and
37:32make something happen.
37:33A bad marriage, but he should
37:34have got most of the settlement
37:35because he's a good player.
37:37Mark Edwards makes something out
37:41of nothing and gets a first
37:42down.
37:43Edwards, as you've mentioned,
37:44coach, from Cincinnati, and he
37:46has a whole bunch of friends and
37:47family at this game.
37:49Well, he's the new security
37:50blanket that Ben Coates once was
37:52for Drew Bledsoe.
37:54He's made terrific blocks.
37:56They're using three wide
37:57receivers and Mark Edwards as
37:59basically the tight end for the
38:01lead blocker.
38:03Picks up the first down from the
38:0547-yard line.
38:07Antoine Smith, the deep back,
38:10Edwards, the up back.
38:12No tight end in the game.
38:14Play action, Bledsoe steps up,
38:16firing, looking, David Patton,
38:18deep catch, at the 20.
38:22Patton got away with an
38:23offensive interference.
38:24A 32-yard gain.
38:29Rodney Heath with the tackle.
38:32And watch Drew Bledsoe get
38:33pressure outside, step up in the
38:35pocket and put the ball right on
38:36the line, and coach, I think
38:37you're right.
38:38A little push off there, right?
38:40The tail end, David Patton.
38:42Just a little push right there
38:43in the numbers.
38:46Beautiful touch throwing over a
38:48defender.
38:49You know, any time a defender's
38:50between the quarterback and the
38:51receiver, you've got to throw it
38:52obviously high enough to clear
38:53him and let the receiver run
38:54under it.
38:56Good point, coach.
38:57First down and 10 from the 21.
38:59Smith, the single setback.
39:01Short drop, Bledsoe decides to
39:03tuck it and run.
39:05Busted play.
39:07You don't want Drew Bledsoe
39:08running the option, coach.
39:10You saw him set his feet, and
39:12something happened.
39:13There was miscommunication
39:14outside, set his feet to throw
39:15that two-step drop.
39:16Nobody was there, and he just
39:17took off with the ball.
39:19Once again, you don't want your
39:20quarterback breaking the pocket.
39:22If it was an option, Charlie
39:24Wise is being talked to right
39:26now.
39:27He's the offensive coordinator.
39:28They won't do that.
39:29But if somebody forgot to run
39:30around, it was going to be a
39:31quick slant or a quick out.
39:33Drew Bledsoe is thrown for over
39:363,000 yards, seventh consecutive
39:38season.
39:39Second down and nine.
39:41Three wide receivers again, two
39:42bats.
39:43Here's Bledsoe looking at
39:45Bledsoe.
39:46Sacked by Raynard Wilson.
39:49Second sack of the day for the
39:51Bengals.
39:54Greg Robinson-Randall just got
39:56beat on the first step.
39:58Didn't have the angle at all.
40:01Right in his face, you see
40:02number 64.
40:04Greg Robinson-Randall.
40:05What does a guy have two names
40:06for, by the way?
40:07What does that mean?
40:08You know, I don't know, but
40:09better say one thing.
40:10When the guy gets around you
40:11that quick, two words better say
40:13to your quarterback.
40:14Look out.
40:16That's a two.
40:17Well, he adopted his father's
40:19name, coach.
40:20His father passed away.
40:21Oh, is that it?
40:22I didn't know that.
40:24Third down and 11 from the 22.
40:26They need to go to the 11 for
40:28the first down, and they won't
40:31get it.
40:33I'm ready.
40:36Give it to me.
40:39Give it to me.
40:43Give it to me.
40:46Give it to me.
40:49Give it to me.
40:52Give it to me.
40:55Give it to me.
40:58Give it to me.
41:01Give it to me.
41:04Give it to me.
41:07Give it to me.
41:10Give it to me.
41:13Give it to me.
41:16Give it to me.
41:19Give it to me.
41:22Give it to me.
41:25Give it to me.
41:28Give it to me.
41:31Give it to me.
41:34Give it to me.
41:3810-3, New England lead,
41:40Cincinnati.
41:41Gus Johnson along with Fred
41:44Jones and Sam Weish.
41:45And guys, what are your
41:46impressions of this game so far?
41:48Well, I think you have to be
41:49impressed with both teams, both
41:50teams in the years prior more
41:52sloppy football.
41:53They play well together.
41:54You see the offensive line for
41:55the Patriots, keeping Drew
41:57Bledsoe some time, you see the
41:58Bengals running the ball, being
41:59aggressive.
42:00It seems like both these teams
42:01are on the right track the
42:02beginning of this year.
42:03They're clearly better than
42:04both up
42:21Don't forget coming up next
42:23It's the men's championship at the u.s. Open Lincoln Hewitt seated number four against the great Pete Sambris
42:32Seated number ten and you had an opportunity to see one of the great matches of the year
42:37one of the great benefits
42:39benefits of working for CBS went to Sam for sagacy the other night and I was just so impressed with the intensity of both of
42:45Those guys and I'm a tennis fan. Now. I'm watching Pete Sambris today first down and 10 from the 29
42:53Dylan over the right side lowers his head gets to the 30
42:57first man there Anthony pleasant for the Patriots
43:00But I tell you what
43:02And I'll ask you Brent because you won't be criticized for being partial this Bengals team looks a lot better
43:10They really look energetic. It looks like there's more of a team
43:13You know
43:14I think that you can just feel it in the locker room and we went out to practice on Friday and we saw the urgency
43:19Which they practiced the Bengals in years past would stand around on Fridays
43:22There'd be loafing the drills and what have you this team was bouncing dick Lebow had these guys ready to go
43:27You practice like a champion you play like a champion
43:30Second down in eight from the 31 drop play Cory Dylan with room houses it outside
43:35He's got a beat on his myth to the corner gets down the sideline and is down at the 25-yard line
43:43Cory Dylan stopped by Smith after a gain of 40 yards
43:49Watch Gloria Malloy blitz from the end zone and he's gonna run right by Cory Dylan
43:54Bang there he goes over 36 a lot of times you're in your running game
43:59You've got one guy that can't be blocked because quarterbacks useless. He's a just handing the ball up of course the runner
44:04So it's 11 against 9 one guy the runner has to make stop
44:08It's 11 carries for 78 yards before Dylan already today first down from the 29 to the sideline warren turns
44:15Gets close to the first down
44:17Will be about a half yard short tie law there to make the stop
44:22But this Cincinnati team they're starting to get a little rhythm here as he picks up nine yards
44:28You know we haven't mentioned this but John Kitna has helped this football team certainly
44:31You can see that the confidence of the ball club
44:34They're still doing the same things, but they're doing it with a guy that they look like they believe in more now
44:38Yeah, he just has to manage this offense very similar to what Trent Dilfer did last year with the Ravens team
44:43Don't try to play out of your your strength
44:46Second down and one
44:49This time it's Bennett over the right side picks up the first down gets to the 15
44:55Lawyer Malloy with the tackle
44:59Three minutes and 44 seconds remaining here in the second quarter of play
45:04New England leads at 10-3, but Cincinnati's driving
45:10It's lawyer Malloy down on the field
45:14And he had big Willie Anderson and Mike golf coming right at him with that run
45:20So Malloy being tended to will be back right after this message
45:27The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Staples
45:31Staples has everything you need for your business at great low prices and by good rich times take control
45:43Well
45:45Guys a couple of 36 is online for a big collision
45:49Brandon Bennett 511 to 20 watch him deliver the blow to lawyer Malloy and lawyer from Malloy coach usually isn't on the receiving end of
45:55A whole lot of hits. I'll tell you what. He's more of a linebacker than he is a safety big
46:00tough guy first down and 10 from the 15 for the Bengals Corey Dillon spinning Corey Dillon hit
46:09On that play by
46:11Roman Pfeiffer also
46:14J. Saylor in on the tackle
46:16For the reason they spread everybody out trying to find out if the Patriots are gonna run zone or man
46:22They ran a man-to-man coverage that time forcing pickles ran the ball, but in the passing game now
46:27They're looking for a man-to-man type pattern
46:31Usually means crossing patterns or patterns on the move no hooks or stop patterns
46:37Play action getting a roll late by war
46:45And it could be a first down tie lot of push him out of bounds a gain of eight though an
46:52acrobatic grab made by the second-year player out of Florida State
46:57You're gonna see this play action take the flow away watch Peter walk little like it's a run rap
47:02Come back in cut it right back outside one-handed grab nice job little misdirection play by the Bengals
47:09High law headed man-to-man, and he thought he was going all the way across
47:12So he jumped in front of him when Peter Warwick planted and came back out
47:16Wide open on the play action Warwick seven touchdowns last year for receiving
47:22First and goal from the five Dylan on the delay
47:33You
47:43Watch my golf right there. Look at that. That's a big hole now. I've been coming around is Richmond web
47:53The offensive line of the Bengals are getting movement
48:02Rackers in to attempt the extra point. It's up and good
48:09Two minutes and 16 seconds remaining here in the second quarter and the Bengals are in business
48:20Cory Dillon
48:21With the rushing touchdown ties the game up at ten apiece with 216 to go Dylan
48:29for carries 50 yards on the drive alone
48:32the
48:37Rackers sends it away. Jr. Redmond from the goal line
48:45Redmond up to the 30-yard line make it the 31
48:50Tonight on CBS if you are anyone you know missed any part of the amazing race
48:55Here's your chance to see it tonight after 60 minutes and catch an all-new episode on Wednesday at 9 8 central
49:01The amazing race tonight after 60 minutes on CBS
49:07So that's not a 40-yard dash there I don't think so I think they're going around the world
49:16So New England with the football at the 30
49:20206 to go Mike Compton is in at Center
49:25They're in the shotgun
49:28Let's go quick strike Bert Emanuel with the catch gets to the 35 where he's met by our trail Hawkins
49:37To Keo spikes
49:40And that takes us to the two-minute warning with the score New England 10 Cincinnati 10 here on opening day
49:50Two minutes to go game tied at 10 New England with the ball at the 36-yard line. What does Bill Belichick tell his team?
49:58Well the same rules they get out of bounds if you can if you're a receiver
50:01If the ball is completed way down the field expect for a timeout
50:04They have three timeouts to go and expect the Bengals to try to strip the ball
50:09tight second and five from the 36
50:18Brian Simmons got a hand on it and almost intercepted it
50:25You
50:26Don't look like drew was thrown in the double covers right there
50:29And that's a ball that he'd like to have back and you know coach you talked about using the sideline one of the routes
50:33I feel like is really great to run in this
50:36Type of situation is that deep over route teams seem to really focus on the sidelines when you got timeouts left
50:41You can still run that 15 20-yard leap over
50:46Underneath JR Redmond first down gets to midfield
50:51Gain of 14 let's go quickly. Here is his team back to the line of scrimmage
50:56See plenty of time
50:58You didn't move far enough down the field to waste the timeout save them for later still a minute and a half to go
51:03Let's go lines up in the gun
51:05Compton once again at center
51:10Now blitz up fires underneath again this time caught by Troy Brown a game seven
51:16You're seeing the zone blitz from the Cincinnati Bengals where they bring linebackers and dropping off the team isn't lining up
51:23They're always one short in the zone. So they get it off. There's running race
51:27Compton goes to center Damian Woody moves to left guard quick strike to the sideline for the manual
51:34Chopping his feet take it down at the 40-yard line picks up the first down
51:38But the clock continues to run now that was a time where Burt Emanuel should have gone outside
51:42He had some blockers outside. He cut back inside had to burn a time in or timeout coach
51:48Time out on the field coming up on the next L halftime report
51:51Join, Jim Mike Randy and Jerry for all the scores and highlights
51:55Plus a preview of the US Open men's final between Layton Hewitt and Pete Sanfors that's coming up on the next L halftime report
52:03Here's where a dig LeBow and the defense has to be careful because they had zone blitz the last three plays in a row
52:09They've come after him
52:10This is the time to go down the field because you're one-on-one
52:13everywhere down the field when I really like David Patton what he brings to this receiving core for the New England Patriots and he
52:19Was gonna be a guy that's gonna make some things happen this year now the time maybe to take a shot
52:24We saw him make a big play earlier on
52:26Take a shot downfield. Give him a chance to run by one of those corners. David Patton is the speed guy
52:31He's the fastest one the clutch guys Troy Brown. That's the guy he's most comfortable with but
52:37Patton certainly is the fastest of the group
52:40New England got on the board first
52:42New blood so found Troy Brown for 14 yards near Rackers came back with the field goal for Cincinnati
52:48And Adam's gonna Terry out of the field goal and then Corey Dillon a five-yard run and we're tied at 10
52:55First and 10 from the 40 under a minute to go. But let's go winds up incomplete
53:01Ball intended for Patton, but he was blanketed nicely by Rodney Heath
53:07I
53:08Did a little turn in pattern and he needed to slide back to the outside because Drew Bledsoe couldn't see him
53:12There was a linebacker blocking the vision
53:15Just miss miss read between the two
53:19Ten to thirteen, let's go having a good day second down
53:26Let's go under pressure
53:30Wraps him up third sack of the day for the Bengals defense
53:36And
53:39A timeout called by New England
53:43Much Mike Compton the left guard having some real problems
53:49Glenn steals a guy getting there first
53:54And boy that just killed the drive coach you get a burn a timeout you lose yards
53:58It just kind of lets the air out of your your offense there marching the ball down the field
54:02We talked about this offensive line given through blood so time and when he has time
54:07He's gonna gas you and it's just tough that zone blitz scheme. You got guys coming from every which way and
54:13Sooner or later. They're gonna get you
54:16Tonight on 60 minutes. Why is Henry Kissinger being accused of aiding and abetting an assassination the victim's son?
54:23Talks to 60 minutes tonight
54:27After tennis
54:29You know in this two-minute drill when you get around the 30-yard line between the 30 and 35
54:34That's your three-point area. You're in field goal range. So you don't want to get sacked or lose yardage back there
54:40That's what the Patriots have done. Let's always been sacked exactly a hundred times in the past two years
54:45Today three times the sack 55 times last year
54:51Flags on the play. Well, they've had trouble with a snap count now
54:55It's about the third time that he's tried to hard count him and that time I think drew bledsoe actually forgot the count as he
55:01stepped away
55:03Well, I know he started the motion quickly because he saw that time was running out just he couldn't get everybody set
55:08He even pulled out of from under center and the ball still wasn't in his hands. Yeah
55:12See the coaches work in the sideline boy. They can't let up a minute
55:16We have game
55:23You know
55:24They'll build a check I've been there
55:26I know the feeling right now and you know at this point coach do you try for the first down or do you go ahead?
55:30And try to chop off, you know, 12 or 14 yards and get yourself in the field goal position
55:35Bennett Terry was hitting him from 55 and pregame warmup. They've got one timeout. They can work anywhere
55:40They want to go right now David Patton comes in motion
55:43Play action bledsoe can't set fires J.R. Redmond with the cat spikes
55:53Immediately
55:57For the Patriots
56:00He owes spikes led the team in tackles last year fourth highest total in Bengals history with 128
56:07When I think he really grew up last year Brian Simmons his running mate
56:11They're linebacker was out for the season with a knee injury and it was to kill spikes all alone
56:16And I think he really matured in that situation
56:18I think he's really a guy that feels like he's a team leader. Now. You've mentioned that he's captain
56:23This is his defense and he is their emotional leader out there
56:30That's the end of the first half with the score New England 10
56:34Cincinnati 10 coming up
56:36It's the next they'll have to report after this message and a word from your local station
56:51Back to
56:52Cincinnati kickoff
56:542000 the opening day in the National Football League where the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals are tied up at 10 apiece
57:01Welcome back Gus Johnson Brett Jones and Sam Weiss and
57:05Surprise surprise the Cincinnati team doesn't look as bad as they did last year and New England
57:10They don't look bad either and this game has died at 10. Well, both teams are clearly better
57:14They're moving the football up and down the field
57:17Cincinnati scored their first touchdown of the year. They're going to their key guy Peter Warrick
57:21I don't want to pick a year ago a little plant Tyler couldn't stay with him
57:26Gets into position to hand the ball to their main man and that's Corey Dillon who scores off the right side running the football
57:33They look pretty good. You know, of course, they do look pretty good. You go back to the halftime stats, you know the 90
