00:00:00The Dallas Cowboys have won the toss and they will receive the kick back deep Kevin Williams
00:00:07and Brock Marion and Craig Hendrick to kick off Mike Holmgren has done a wonderful job
00:00:14as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers so has this entire organization weather unbelievable
00:00:21really seventy two degrees in Green Bay it's twenty five with the wind chill minus one
00:00:26here it's sunny up there it's flurries and it's going to be a flurrying day I don't care
00:00:31what the temperature is at Texas Stadium I wish we were playing up there Hendricks line
00:00:40drive kickoff sails over the head and out of the end zone a good way to start it let's
00:00:47look at the Dallas starting offense Troy Aikman the quarterback number eight has had another
00:00:52outstanding year in front of him perhaps the best offensive line in football two at a Newton
00:01:00Derek Kennard at center Allen and Eric Williams Emmett Smith and Darryl Johnston the two backs
00:01:06Kevin Williams and Michael Irvin wide and Jay Novacek the tight end that is a tough
00:01:15offense to face and there's a guy who has a tough job today Eric Williams blocking Reggie
00:01:21White I have never seen Reggie White as fired up as he is today that's Michael Irvin in motion
00:01:27and Aikman back to throw it. Pass is dropped. Irvin had it. Dropped it but the ball is down.
00:01:37The Packers obviously hoping for a start like they had against San Francisco but they've marked
00:01:42it as down. Packers have their arms in the air signify a touchdown. Fred Strickland came up
00:01:48with it. Ed Hockley is the referee. Pass is incomplete. They're gonna say that Michael Irvin didn't have
00:01:58control of the ball. Again control is having the ball getting both feet down and ready to run with
00:02:05it. The ball popped out just as he was going down. What a start that would have been for the Packers
00:02:13though. Would it have been two weeks in a row. Second and 10. Emmitt Smith is deep behind Aikman.
00:02:19Aikman will throw again and go on deep. Incomplete and no flags. Let's have a look at the Packer
00:02:31defense intended for Kevin Williams. Here's the Packer defensive unit the front porch Sean Jones
00:02:36Yurkovich Gilbert Brown and Reggie White. Koonce Strickland and Wayne Simmons the linebackers.
00:02:44And the secondary Evans Teague Butler and Newsom. Deion Sanders and the offensive package for the
00:02:52Cowboys. This is one of the things that the Cowboys have added in the last couple of weeks.
00:02:57Earlier when they played Deion on offense it would just be on first or second down. Now he's in the
00:03:03third down package. I told you Reggie White was fired up. He was fired up and ready to play
00:03:16yesterday. Reggie White has never won. He's never been in a championship game. High school college
00:03:22or pro. Watch him right here. Here he is against Eric Williams. He just beats him. He beats Eric
00:03:28with his push. Then he pushes him and then right around him. And when he got around Eric Williams
00:03:33he saw one thing number eight and went after it. He knocked Williams back and then he went around.
00:03:39John Jett backed the punt to Antonio Freeman deep for the Packers. He can be dangerous is dangerous.
00:03:48The Packers came after it. Darren Smith
00:03:56came up with a blocked punt but the Packers will take over.
00:03:59The Packers are going to take over in about the 23 yard line. This defense is going out there and
00:04:07they started to make things happen. They're not special teams. They aren't waiting for something.
00:04:11Look they're just coming right up the middle. They're going for it. This is the ideal place
00:04:15to go for a block. Bernardo Harris is the man who blocked it and Bernardo Harris wasn't touched.
00:04:21You saw number 54 coming straight up the middle. So the Packers get the early break.
00:04:29Every time the Packers have come here before Pat they've played soft against this Dallas team.
00:04:35They made one thing say that they weren't going to play soft today and I'll tell you one thing
00:04:39whether they're going to play soft or not they haven't started playing soft today. They get the
00:04:43turnover very quickly. Four wide receivers they open with. Brett Favre's the quarterback.
00:04:51Outside quickly the Cowboys came on a blitz. Let's look at the Green Bay offense. Favre was in a hurry.
00:05:00In his postseason career he's four and two as a starter. The MVP this year and deservedly so.
00:05:08Rutgers Timmerman the rookie. Witters, Galbraith and Dotson in front of him.
00:05:15Edgar Bennett and Dorsey Levins the two running backs. Morgan Brooks and Mark Shimura second and ten.
00:05:21Three wide outs. Edgar Bennett's the deep back. Favre fakes the Bennett.
00:05:27Levin throws Mark Shimura. That's two that Favre has thrown high.
00:05:34Part of that is a crowd and part of that is the adrenaline.
00:05:39Here is the Cowboy defense then. The front four Shante Carver in place of Charles Haley, Leon
00:05:45Lent, Maryland and Tony Tolbert. Coming off a strong week last week. Darren Smith, Robert Jones
00:05:51and Dixon Edwards the linebackers in the secondary. Brown, Marion, Woodson and Deion Sanders.
00:05:59Now they go with a nickel package. Four wide receivers and a three man line. You don't see
00:06:04the Cowboys a lot in a three man line. Very rarely. Third and ten. Favre has time.
00:06:13Favre has time. Throws high again. Bounces off the hands of Brooks. Out of bounds. Caught
00:06:21by Anthony Morgan. That would have been a touchdown if he'd been able to stay inbound.
00:06:31Delay of the game so there was no play.
00:06:36Yeah anytime you get a delay a game if the clock gets to zero before the ball snaps
00:06:41the officials blow the whistle. Then when they blow the whistle then that means that
00:06:46the ball is dead then. So there was no play. No play. We'll take a look at it anyway.
00:06:52Anthony Morgan is number 81. He's going to come up with it. In fact if it hadn't been
00:06:57blown that would have been good. That would have been a touchdown. Right. Third and 15. Favre again
00:07:03back to throw. Outside high again. Intended for Antonio Freeman. Favre so far has been high every
00:07:11time. You know why? And I think it's a crown of this field Pat. This field in Dallas has the
00:07:17biggest crowd there is. And when you're on one hash mark and if you throw normal heights to the
00:07:22other side the ball is going to be high. I was talking to Jim McMahon about it yesterday. He
00:07:27said you have to throw it at guy's knees to hit him in the shoulder. Look at that crown. And the
00:07:32Packers practice facility in Green Bay is flat. Jackie from 46 yards will attempt the field goal.
00:07:40Plenty of distance. And the Packers lead 3-0. Back at Texas Stadium. Green Bay leads it 3-0.
00:07:48Hendricks kick off again. Sales in the end zone for Kevin Williams who's going to stay there.
00:07:55Right now let's send you down to the sidelines of Matt Mellon. Yeah John remember yesterday we
00:08:00watched Brett Favre practice and he was throwing that crown and the ball kept on coming off high.
00:08:04Well I talked to him before the game and I asked him about that and he said you know what after I
00:08:08got used to it I didn't even see it as a problem. But watching him here in that first series it
00:08:13looks like it's kind of a problem. Patrick back to you. All right Matt thank you. It does look
00:08:17like a problem. Every pass he threw was high. Right and especially when you're throwing from
00:08:22the far hash mark across to that other sideline. Then you're at a higher point throwing to a much
00:08:28lower point. First and ten Dallas. Novacek on the move. And Emmitt Smith gets the handoff.
00:08:38Bumbles out of bounds. Gets about five yards. A good block by Moose Johnston on Wayne Simmons.
00:08:44That's what you have to do if you're going to get outside. If you're going to get around the corner
00:08:49someone has to make that block to get you around the corner. Moose Johnston is fullback. Did it
00:08:55on that play. Watch him right here. Get Simmons. Boom. He hits him. Then he gets him turned and
00:09:00that right there that little block there. That was enough to get Emmitt Smith that soft corner.
00:09:06And Emmitt took advantage of it. Cutting up field. Second and four. Deion Sanders in at wide receiver.
00:09:14And gets again to Emmitt Smith. Stumbles across the 25-26. Maybe got a yard.
00:09:20Big John Yurkovich in there. He's the guy if you're going to run inside you're going to have
00:09:24to get those two inside guys blocked. John Yurkovich here and Gilbert Brown. The two big
00:09:29guys. If you're going to run in here you have to get these two guys blocked. Now over the years
00:09:35the Cowboys have done very well at that. That time they didn't get Yurkovich blocked. You see he got
00:09:40on Derek Kennard and he pushed Kennard into the backfield. Then there was no place for Emmitt
00:09:45Smith to cut. Third down. Two tight ends for Dallas. Moose Johnston in motion.
00:09:52Went back to throw it. Incomplete flag on the play. Irvin. The intended receivers started to cut it to
00:10:01the middle and they cut him off. That was a double coverage. That was one of those zone blitzes. We're
00:10:06talking about John Yurkovich giving penetration on the play before then he dropped back on that one.
00:10:14Pass interference by the defense. Number 21. Automatic first down. Called against Newsom.
00:10:23Greg Newsom is number 21 and you see the thing that you always play Michael Irvin. You want to
00:10:29be aggressive and sometimes you're a little too aggressive. Now you can bump that guy but in that
00:10:34first five yards and not when the ball's in the air. Newsom did two of those things wrong.
00:10:40First and 10. Dallas at their own play and Aikman goes back to throw. Dumps it in the middle to Daryl Johnston.
00:10:48Picked up five.
00:10:52And again Big John Yurkovich is back there. This is a thing that Fritz Schirmer likes to do. Now
00:10:58you know his blitz a linebacker or defensive back and then a drop a tackle out of there.
00:11:04Yurkovich last week he got caught on Jerry Rice. He said he covered him pretty well. He said maybe
00:11:09he gave him a little too much cushion but he thought he did okay. And then the last two passes
00:11:14he dropped out of there. The winner of this game on second and five. The winner of this game will
00:11:20play the Pittsburgh Steelers. And this year's Super Bowl. Reverse coming. It's Deion Sanders
00:11:28from Smith. Sanders got about four yards. Not enough for the first down. Stopped by George Koontz.
00:11:36One thing the Cowboys did this week is they put more plays in for Deion. And of course you got
00:11:43the short passes the medium passes and then and then the runs a reverse. They also have a play
00:11:49that is going to kind of look like this like a reverse. But then he's going to stop and go back
00:11:53the other way. And I think this reverse is just to set up a fake reverse.
00:11:58Third and two. They're 0 for 1 in the only attempt so far. Three wide receivers. This time Smith does the deep back.
00:12:08Emmitt Smith. Breaks a couple of tackles and gets the first down. Moves into Packer territory.
00:12:15That's what you want to do. Short yardage. That's what Nate Newton is all about. You get in behind
00:12:19Nate Newton. Derrick Kennard. Mark Tuene. That left side you get Gilbert Brown going back.
00:12:25Knock his helmet off. Watch. Here's right here. Here's the power here. You want to go right in behind these guys.
00:12:31Watch Nate Newton fire off. Boom. He gets his guy. Stands him up. Drives him. They leave one. Emmitt
00:12:38Smith takes him. They leave another one. Emmitt Smith knocks his helmet off. That's mostly Emmitt
00:12:43Smith. In fact at the end of it and getting the first down that was all Emmitt Smith. First and ten. Dallas.
00:12:50First and ten. Dallas. Smith again. And again he finds a little bit of room but not much.
00:12:59Matt Labonte who replaces Reggie White made the stop. One thing everyone wants to be physical
00:13:07against Michael Irvin and watch Craig Newsom here. He knows it that Irvin is a physical guy and if
00:13:13you're going to play him you have to play him like you played Jerry Rice last week and that's what
00:13:18Newsom is doing. But Michael Irvin isn't going to take it either. I mean you talk about
00:13:22the most physical receiver in football is probably Michael Irvin. Yurkovich
00:13:31is injured for the Packers down on one knee.
00:13:37That is a big thing because over the years in those five games where the Packers are 0-5
00:13:43coming in here against the Cowboys they've had problems in that middle and they need John
00:13:49Yurkovich in there today and they need Gilbert Brown to play a good game and their rookie Darius
00:13:54Holland. If he's going to come in and play he has to be able to stand and hold up that middle.
00:13:58Bob Kaburski has come in to replace Yurkovich. You see what happens these guys are so strong
00:14:04this Cowboy offensive line and they just keep blocking and blocking and blocking. Nate Newton
00:14:09had Yurkovich that time stayed with him and then what they try and do is until the whistle blows
00:14:15they're going to drive and try and drive you right into the ground. Three-man rush by Green Bay.
00:14:23Aikman back as time goes deeper. Irvin can't come up with it. Newsom right with him. Good coverage.
00:14:32Hey there was no time there was there was no pressure at all on Troy Aikman. That's what
00:14:37they do to Bob Kaburski in there. They just knock him right out of there then they have good
00:14:41coverage downfield. This Newsom is a rookie. I guarantee you when you get to this point in the
00:14:47playoffs you're not a rookie anymore. He's a very confident player right now. I asked him yesterday
00:14:53when he felt that he wasn't a rookie anymore and he said well about the 16th game. When you first
00:14:59asked him he said what? Three wide receivers. Deion Sanders in. Aikman back to throw.
00:15:11Deion.
00:15:15Inside the 10. Run out of bounds by George Teague.
00:15:22As we said earlier the Cowboys have more plays for Deion and we're going to see a lot more of him.
00:15:29We're going to see a heck of a lot more of him on offense today. He's in the middle. Mike Pryor
00:15:34is going to eventually get to him. You see what they picked him off. He came on across. He got
00:15:39the ball here. Watch Teague didn't know what to do. He didn't know which move to go for and finally
00:15:44Mike Pryor number 39 comes and hits him. Watch Teague here. He just doesn't want to get beat.
00:15:50He's not going to take an inside. He's not going to take an outside. He's just going to watch the
00:15:54dance and hope that Pryor gets there quickly. The pick was set up early.
00:16:02Gabe Wilkins makes the stop. You see what happened to Mark Tuine there? He started to make a block
00:16:08and his helmet flew off and he had to keep playing because the play was coming at him.
00:16:12Unseasonably warm in Texas today here at Texas Stadium. Hot almost. I'll tell you it's going to
00:16:19be a good sweat day then. Watch Mark Tuine here. He goes into Sean Jones. Sean Jones punches him
00:16:27right in the face. Knocks his helmet off and then comes and makes the tackle. That's football.
00:16:32Yes sir. Right in the face. Pop. Off goes the helmet. Boom. There goes the tackle.
00:16:37Aikman to throw. Has Novacek at about the sixth. Mike Pryor made the stop.
00:16:46That play. That pass completion to Deion Sanders. Novacek
00:16:49got some pick. That was. I mean he was looking for someone coming across there and that was
00:16:55that was even more of a block. That was like a crackback block more than it was a pick.
00:17:01Third and goal at the sixth. Reggie White back in. This is what the Cowboys have always done
00:17:08to the Packers. Have good sustained drives with good mixture of run and pass. Seven and a half
00:17:14minutes left in the first quarter. Packers leading three nothing. Aikman. Michael Irvin.
00:17:33From six yards away. The Cowboys take the lead.
00:17:37That is determination. He threw that right into double coverage.
00:17:45Well I said Michael Irvin is going to be bigger today. He's a playmaker.
00:17:49Playmakers come up big in championship games.
00:17:54Chris Bonio for the extra point with Novacek holding.
00:17:57Extra points good at 7-3. We talk about what a physical receiver Michael Irvin is. Watch him.
00:18:12This is all physical. He's going to get a little double here but it is a physical thing. He just
00:18:17comes off and he hits Craig Newsome. Hits Craig Newsome. Double coverage. Trey Aikman has confidence
00:18:23in that arm to sing that thing in there. Bonio kicks off. It'll be Antonio Freeman and look out
00:18:29for him. Freeman out to about the 25. Here's the play that set up the whole thing. Yeah and it's
00:18:40the one that Mike Holmgren is still arguing about. You're going to see right here. Watch
00:18:45Jay Novacek is right here and watch him pick here. I mean that is darn near like I said a
00:18:51crack block but he just picked off two guys and that's what Mike Holmgren at the end is still
00:18:57arguing about. Yep. He said on that play that Deion Sanders caught that ball. Our guy was picked
00:19:05and he was right. Holmgren saw it. We saw it. The officials didn't see it though.
00:19:11First and 10. Edgar Bennett gets the carry. He's hit by Russell Maryland and that tripped him up.
00:19:18That's what the Cowboys get in Russell Maryland. He's not a great pass rusher but he's a heck of
00:19:24a run defender. I mean he plays in there and just boom he hits that thing and gets his penetration.
00:19:31Look at this. This is something new. We're in the first quarter. That's instant energy.
00:19:37Emmitt's in the several other businesses. Now he's in the snack bar business. Well you know
00:19:43now he's in the snack bar business. Well you know they have to do that to get those first downs.
00:19:49Pass from Favre to Chimura is incomplete. Yeah it's something how how one play can light up a
00:19:57team. I mean that that that play that pass that crossing pattern to Deion Sanders really lit up
00:20:04this Cowboy team. Favre yet to complete a pass. Must be having trouble hearing
00:20:10the radio communications as well in his helmet. I think he's having trouble with a lot of things.
00:20:14I think he has too much adrenaline pumping. I think he's one of those guys that
00:20:18sometimes plays offense like a nose tackle. I think the crown is bothering him. I think
00:20:23the crowd and the noise is bothering him. Favre with time throws incomplete.
00:20:31Robert Brooks the intended receiver. Larry Brown was all over it. And that's the other thing that's
00:20:37bothering him is this Cowboy defense. They are playing very aggressive. They're playing
00:20:41aggressive on the receiver. They're playing aggressive against the run. And they're trying
00:20:46to get to Brett Favre. Deion Sanders will return punts. Craig Hendrick to kick it for Green Bay.
00:20:55Deion doesn't need music. He wants music. He wanted him to play a record when he returns
00:21:00punt. He wanted his own music for punt return. High kick. Deion Sickles fair catch and makes it
00:21:06at the 35. 6.32 after play in the first quarter. That's Jim McMahon. Brett Favre's backup in
00:21:18conversation. He's been a big help to Brett Favre. I think so. You know he's a big help
00:21:23because he's been in games like this. And you can look at how big that is. Players with
00:21:28championship experience. The Packers have nine. The Cowboys have 36. So having a guy like Jim
00:21:35McMahon on your team that can help Brett Favre with his experience. And part of his job is not
00:21:41to tell him a lot about the plays and what to do but is just kind of calm him down. Favre will say
00:21:47to him what are they doing. And McMahon says this is the way they're covering things. Favre is now
00:21:54talking to his help up in the press box. Sometimes you see more from up there than you do from down
00:22:03on the field and sometimes the reverse is true. He's going to miss his call. He's going to miss
00:22:08I remember a lot of those times when Pittsburgh advanced to the Super Bowl with Terry Bradshaw.
00:22:14Deion Sanders on second and 11. To Emmett Smith who gets just about three or four. Wayne Simmons
00:22:23made the stop. One thing the Packers are doing is they're playing that line of play that they
00:22:28used to play in the Super Bowl. They're playing that line of play that they used to play in the
00:22:32Super Bowl. They're playing that line of play that they used to play in the Super Bowl. They're
00:22:37doing is they're playing that line of scrimmage a lot more physical. You see John Yurkovich is back
00:22:41in there now. He had that little injury went out for a play or two but he's back. He has to be
00:22:46physical in there. Reggie White you know is going to be physical. He's fired up today. Gilbert Brown
00:22:53he has to be able to handle that middle. And they have to be able to take care of that business
00:22:59first. If you're not fired up today you need a new pilot life. You got to bring all your stuff
00:23:04off the shelf. They're playing a three man line now. Aikman the throw. Irvin makes the catch.
00:23:11Cumberidge is good. He fights for yardage doesn't get the first down. Again that was just a physical
00:23:16play by Michael Irvin but that was a heck of a play by Craig Newsom not letting Michael Irvin
00:23:21get that first down. Yeah you talk about a matchup. Watch Eric Williams here. The first move he's
00:23:28going to make is boom. He's going to put his right hand right up in Reggie's face. And Reggie says
00:23:33that's the thing he doesn't like but you can't stand there fighting about it. You hope that the
00:23:37official sees it because you've got to continue on your pass rush. He was looking to the official
00:23:42to see if he did. John Jett his first punt today remember was blocked by the Packers.
00:23:50This one they don't put the heat on. Antonio Freeman gets away from one. Bates takes him down.
00:23:59In the NFC championship game at Texas Stadium Dallas 7. Green Bay 3. Packers ball at their own 15.
00:24:09You talk about a guy who is fired up and a guy who wants this game. He's still talking about
00:24:15what Eric Williams did punching him in the face. Then he told Mike Holmgren that he started to
00:24:20talk to his whole team. Look what they're doing to us. This guy was fired up. This guy wants this
00:24:26championship. I think more than anyone has ever wanted a championship football. He's never been
00:24:30this far before in his great career. Packers run the ball on first and first and 10 with William
00:24:41Henderson the ball carrier. There's Eric Williams. He's the other side of that. He's the puncher. We
00:24:47just watched the punch he talked to his coach. The puncher is just calm in his eyes a little bit.
00:24:54Eric Williams has a little bad knee now. When he's healthy he is the best tackle in all football. He's
00:25:04the best offensive lineman in all football. He is one tough guy. He plays like a defensive player.
00:25:09Edgar Bennett was split wide to the right and Deion Sanders is covering him. Leon Lett intercepts
00:25:15the screen pass from Favre. Leon Lett. All 6'6 of him in Favre's path. Leon Lett is a guy who just
00:25:26played before that. He stopped the run. You're going to watch Leon Lett here. Last week he raised
00:25:32all kinds of havoc. Watch him there. He starts on the pass rush. Then he feels the screen. It was
00:25:37going to be a middle screen. He was trying to get the ball in the middle. He's going to get it.
00:25:43Leon Lett came off his pass rush and got right in front of Brett Favre.
00:25:49He's trying to throw it to number 25 Dorsey Levins here. Leon Lett started his pass rush.
00:25:55Felt Levins come in the screen. It's a middle screen. Most screens are outside right or left.
00:26:00That is a middle screen. Leon Lett got right into it. Cowboys first and ten.
00:26:07Inside the ten is Emmitt Smith. There's a penalty flag down. There's some hitting down there on
00:26:13that one. Boy. You talk about line play in the pits and hitting. That's what that was.
00:26:19This against Green Bay. Face mask.
00:26:28Face mask by the defense. Number 93.
00:26:32Face mask by the defense. Number 93. Five-yard penalty only. Half the distance to the goal.
00:26:37Big Gilbert Brown. He beat first down.
00:26:44Yeah. Let's watch the interception again, Pat. We're going to watch Leon Lett on the
00:26:47right side of the screen. Looks like Brett Favre is feeling a little pressure there.
00:26:52And if you don't have a screen, you always, always throw it away. And there was not much
00:26:59pressure. No. And it looked like he felt it or he manufactured it. But anytime you see that
00:27:05there's anyone there on the screen, if they read it and it's not going to work, you just throw the
00:27:09ball away. First and goal at the five. Two tight ends. Novichek goes in motion. Emmitt Smith gets
00:27:19to about the four. There we saw a shot over there of Charles Haley and how excited he was when Leon
00:27:27Lett made that interception. Well, since Charles Haley's been out with that back surgery, Leon Lett
00:27:34has really stepped up his play. I mean, last week in the playoff game, he dominated. And this week,
00:27:40he's starting that same type of game. And he's sort of Charles Haley's pupil. I know. Look at
00:27:46the first guy there when he comes off the field is Charles Haley. I watched him at practice and
00:27:51Charles Haley does coach Leon Lett. On second down, Aikman looking all kinds of times. Touchdown
00:28:02to Michael Irvin. His second from Aikman. Emmitt Smith down on the field.
00:28:15Four-yard touchdown pass from Aikman to Irvin, but Emmitt Smith is down. Kevin O'Neal, the trainer,
00:28:22out checking him out. And Emmitt Smith made a heck of a play fake. That's what he does to you,
00:28:28because you say, we have to stop the run. We have to stop the run. Watch them all come towards Emmitt
00:28:34when he fakes that. This is all about a fake and about pass protection. Troy Aikman had so much
00:28:40time, he could look to about five receivers. The fifth one being Michael Irvin.
00:28:46O'Neal for the extra point with Novacek holding and the Cowboys trying to add to their lead.
00:28:52O'Neal does and it's 14-3. The Cowboys 14, the Packers 3. We're still in the first quarter.
00:29:00Michael Irvin scored both touchdowns. There's Fritz Schirmer who runs the Packer defense.
00:29:07They've been put under a lot of pressure. Well, they had the Deion reverse. They had the Deion
00:29:12Sanders catch. They had Michael Irvin making catches and being real physical. They had Troy
00:29:18Aikman drilling the ball in him. They've had excellent pass protection. See, after Troy Aikman
00:29:23throws a touchdown, look at that group that he goes and shakes her hand. That's that offensive
00:29:28line. That was all about a good play fake and good pass protection, because he had so much time.
00:29:34O'Neal kicks off. Freeman will handle it at the two.
00:29:43Freeman hit by Swans and down he goes. The Packers take over at about their own 27,
00:29:51trailing 14-3. We're still in the first quarter. You know, we've done a lot of Cowboy games this
00:29:57year and don't you just feel that they've really stepped up the intensity? There's Ray Donaldson,
00:30:03who was the center for much of this year. In fact, he was injured, broke a leg, had pins on
00:30:09his leg just removed the other day. He was injured on Thanksgiving Day and until that time, I thought
00:30:15he was one of the best offensive linemen on this Cowboy team. He really made a difference.
00:30:20First to 10, Green Bay, Favre. Fakes to Bennett. Got Brooks and Robert Brooks will not be caught.
00:30:35Touchdown, Green Bay and they're back in it. That's Favre's first pass completion, 73 yards.
00:30:43And if you're going to make one, you better make it a great one and he did.
00:30:46Robert Brooks went right by Larry Brown. Larry Brown is not the best speed in the league
00:30:51and once Brooks got a step on him, he was wide open and Brett Favre threw a perfect pass.
00:30:58A new team playoff record. The record had been held by Boyd Dowler and things have turned around.
00:31:05You see what he did there? He made a little move right there on Larry Brown.
00:31:09Larry Brown couldn't get a bump or a jam on Robert Brooks. He got behind him and then Larry Brown
00:31:15was no match for Brooks' speed. Brooks was pulling away. Jackie for the extra point. Hendrick is the
00:31:22holder. 14-10. A minute 59 left to play in the first quarter and this has been full of fireworks
00:31:36and everything we expected. And I think Brett Favre was looking for a chance to get the ball
00:31:41to Robert Brooks. That's his favorite receiver. Everyone thought when the Green Bay Packers lost
00:31:47Sterling Sharp that that was going to be the end of the year. Robert Brooks has really stepped up.
00:31:53We thought Deion Sanders was going to be on him most of the time. This time it was Larry Brown.
00:32:00And you're going to see him right here. Now watch. Brown is going to come up and he's going to walk
00:32:04up here, which is okay, but he misses him. And then Brooks just gets beyond him. And then from
00:32:09that point on is the touchdown. This safety gets held up here. So he's looking to the tight end.
00:32:15He has the tight end. So there's no help at all for Larry Brown. So when Larry Brown doesn't
00:32:20get a jam or a bump, then that is a mismatch in speed. And it's 14-10. Robert Brooks, of course,
00:32:29in Green Bay would be jumping into the stands. You know what he does, Pat? He takes the stadium
00:32:34survey. The Packers were out here yesterday. Robert Brooks went all around the stadium to
00:32:40see if he scored a touchdown, if there was a place that he could jump. And he said they're
00:32:44all too high. There's no place to jump. That's a good, wise survey he took. Kevin William
00:32:52brings it out to about the 32-yard line, where he's taken down by Bernardo Harris,
00:32:59who blocked the punt earlier. One thing about Brett Favre and the Packer receiving core,
00:33:03you're talking about Sterling Sharp. He has really spread it around. Brooks is a key man,
00:33:07but they all catch passes. And I think that's made Brett Favre a better quarterback, because
00:33:12in not having to throw to Sterling Sharp, then he doesn't have to force it. So he just goes back and
00:33:18he looks for the open guy. And it could be Brooks. It could be a tight end. It could be the other
00:33:22wide receiver. It could be Levins, Edgar Bennett. He just mixes it up.
00:33:27Johnston was the man in motion. Emmitt Smith has the ball. Emmitt bounces it to the side
00:33:31and knocked out of bounds after he picked up about three by Doug Evans.
00:33:35You know, that's what a strong arm by Brett Favre does for you, too, because the first three drives,
00:33:41the Packers had nine plays, no yards. And then they come in, and then one play, 73 yards.
00:33:50You know, the Packers last week against San Francisco did an outstanding job.
00:33:54And that's what they're going to have to do today as well. Yeah, because the last time
00:33:59they played against the Cowboys, their tackling was atrocious. It was terrible.
00:34:04Second down, about eight.
00:34:09Blitz coming. Aikman has to unload, and it's on the carpet.
00:34:12You know what they did? They played him in what Fritz Schirmer calls a big nickel,
00:34:16five defensive backs. One of those guys on the Blitz,
00:34:20Butler, he's going to come right up here. He's number 36. He was the fifth defensive back in
00:34:25there. There's a linebacker. There's Butler coming right there. And see, that's the same
00:34:31defense that they used yesterday. Here's Leroy Butler right here. You see, and he's the fifth
00:34:37defensive back that plays like a linebacker. That's a defense they had so much success with
00:34:43last week against the 49ers. That's right. That's right. That's right.
00:34:46That's one thing that Fritz Schirmer has always liked to do. And when he was at Arizona,
00:34:51he called it a big nickel. Here, they call it the packer. But his play with four defensive linemen,
00:34:57just two linebackers, and five defensive backs, with one of those defensive backs being a linebacker.
00:35:04And he's got a lot of talent. He's got a lot of experience. He's got a lot of talent.
00:35:08He's got a lot of experience. He's got a lot of experience. He's got a lot of talent.
00:35:12defensive backs, with one of those defensive backs being a linebacker type of guy that can
00:35:18be either linebacker if it's a run or defensive back if it's a pass. Ernie Zampezzi, who is the
00:35:24offensive coordinator now for the Cowboys, was with Fritz Schirmer when they were both with the
00:35:29Rams those years, 87 through 90, offense against defense. Yeah, and then they played so many games
00:35:35against each other where, you know, Ernie was here and Fritz Schirmer was in Green Bay and so on. And
00:35:42they really know each other well, and they try and get each other's rhythm. I mean,
00:35:46Ernie is calling the offensive plays, so he's trying to get into Fritz Schirmer's rhythm of
00:35:52calling defenses, and Fritz Schirmer says that what he tries to do is get Ernie's rhythm to call
00:35:58the defenses against him. He said it's tough. They both say it's tough. You only got to be wrong once.
00:36:03The Cowboys just were wrong on their defense. There's Eggman, the reverse to Deion Sanders.
00:36:12Deion. They might have gotten a yard, might have gotten maybe two, not much more than that. One
00:36:20thing Mike Holmgren was saying yesterday, that when Deion plays offense, you can hit him. When
00:36:25he plays defense, you can never get to him. Nate Newton down after that play. Now he gets off the
00:36:33field or is still trying to get off the field. But watch, when Deion Sanders runs the ball,
00:36:40he draws a crowd of green jerseys because that's what Holmgren says. He said when he runs the ball
00:36:45and when he gets it, we are really going to go after him because then we can't hit him.
00:36:50That's tough to dance with four people on top of you.
00:36:53It's tough if the Cowboys don't have Nate Newton too.
00:36:58He's not only a big part of this offense as a blocker, but he's a
00:37:03big part of the heart and soul of this Dallas Cowboy offense.
00:37:08So the Cowboys will have to punt with 56 seconds left in the first quarter.
00:37:12Dallas leading 14-10. Green Bay has already blocked one punt. Antonio Freeman is back deep
00:37:18for the Packer. They're not coming after this one. And John Jett gets off a rocket.
00:37:27That had some jets in it. This is Freeman and look out for him.
00:37:33Bono. Jett takes him down by the face mask. John Jett, the punter grabbed him by the face mask,
00:37:41took him down and the flags come flying. I think that was the only way Jett was going to get him.
00:37:46Jett was the last guy there and if Jett doesn't get Freeman, no one gets him. Freeman goes for
00:37:52the straight arm. Jett just goes right through it and grabs whatever he can and it just happens to
00:37:58be a face mask. And as you say, that's the only way he would have stopped him because he was gone.
00:38:05Antonio Freeman has turned into a heck of a player for this Packer team. Both as a receiver
00:38:10and a punt returner. Watch these moves that he makes. Then when he gets by here, he puts on the
00:38:15burst. He tries to make the move and the stiff arm and John Jett made a heck of a play of just
00:38:21running right through the stiff arm. If he doesn't do this, the Packers have the lead. I know when
00:38:27you get a stiff arm like that, you have to run through it. He got stiffed arm to the face mask
00:38:32and then he had to retaliate with a face mask. Nate Newton over on the sideline there checking
00:38:39him out. It's first down Packers at the Dallas 35. Isn't it funny how one play can turn things
00:38:46around. Brett Favre goes back, throws that deep one to Robert Brooks and then the whole thing
00:38:52changes in the Packers' favor. Mike Holmgren calls the offensive plays for the Packers. Four
00:39:00wide receivers for Green Bay this time. Edgar Bennett's the lone setback. They really haven't
00:39:06tried to run much. Now Bennett inside the 30 about the 27 run down from behind by Shante Carver.
00:39:17Adam Timmerman the rookie seventh round draft choice who has to block Leon Lett did a good
00:39:23job that time because if they're going to be able to run, they have to get Leon Lett blocked
00:39:28and Timmerman the rookie turned Lett to the outside. Word from the Cowboys is that Nate
00:39:35Newton has a left knee sprain and it's questionable whether or not he'll be back.
00:39:4314-10 Dallas over Green Bay. Chris Jacky loosening up as the Packers are in his field goal range
00:39:50right now. Second and two. Leon Sanders is looking for Robert Brooks. I'm sure that
00:39:59he was going to be on Brooks most of this game and after they saw the mismatch of speed when
00:40:04Larry Brown was left on Brooks, I would think that the Cowboys would keep Leon Sanders on Brooks
00:40:10the rest of this game but he's not on this play because Brooks isn't an outside receiver. Brooks
00:40:17is in the slot. There's Brooks right here. There goes Brooks in motion. Brown's going to have him
00:40:26again. Carver's looking in that direction but Bennett gets the carry and he's close to a Packer
00:40:33first down. Again let's go down to the sidelines and our reporter Matt Millen. Yeah guys I'm down
00:40:40here and I'm looking at Nate. You know Nate's walking back and forth and trying to take the
00:40:43pressure off that thing. You know the only thing he says is he gives me a wink and I know if Nate
00:40:48gives me a wink things are pretty good. He'll be back. That's one football player talking to another
00:40:55football player. You don't need you know how you're doing. You're okay and you know what do you got?
00:40:59You got a medial collateral. You got a patella. You got what they just wouldn't say yeah that's
00:41:03okay give me a drink of water and I'll go again. Here's Favre. Keith Jackson touchdown Green Bay.
00:41:11That's what the Packers needed. Again Brett Favre is going to have to do it. He got good
00:41:16pass protection, good time. Keith Jackson right down the middle just like they did last week
00:41:22against the 49ers. Jackson from Favre. Hey if Brett Favre started out cold didn't have this
00:41:32thing figured out but Mike Holmgren helped him figure it out. Jim McMahon helped him figure it
00:41:37out and now he's going out and executing. And it's the Packers on top 16-14 with Chris Jackie
00:41:44trying to make it 17-14 with Craig Hendrick holding. Boy did that quiet down the crowd huh?
00:41:51Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith. The Packers just took the lead 17-14. Three plays 35 yards.
00:41:59Touchdown pass Jackson from Favre. His last two passes. Favre's last two passes have been for
00:42:04touchdown. Those were his only two completions. He's only completed two passes so far. Both of
00:42:11them for touchdown.
00:42:13Hammond-Williams to about the 26th. Let's look at the touchdown again. We'll see here's a formation that Mike Holmgren was telling us. Here's the two tight ends. Keith Jackson is right here. Now here's the two wide receivers which brings the extra safety over here. Corner, corner, extra safety here. So now you can sneak in here because they are so concerned
00:42:36about the two wide receivers on the other side. See that safety comes over there and now that just opens up that hole for Keith Jackson because of the two wide receivers on the left side.
00:42:53Favre for two touchdowns. Aikman for two touchdowns. And Favre is feeling confident right now.
00:43:01Here is Aikman. Novacek. Aikman's passed. Covered by Wayne Simmons.
00:43:15Now watch Brett Favre, Pat. What he's going to do is he's looking to the left because he wants to
00:43:20keep that safety we showed you. See him watch. He looks left, left to keep that safety over there.
00:43:25Then with that look that kept the safety over there and that gave Keith Jackson
00:43:30time to get in the middle where the safety couldn't get back. Second and seven.
00:43:41Aikman looks left and hits Darrell Johnston and he is wrestled to the ground quickly by Wayne Simmons.
00:43:49I'll tell you one thing the Packers are doing a heck of a lot better this game than they've ever
00:43:53played against the Cowboys as they're tackling today. And we were talking about what they did
00:43:58last week to the 49ers how well they tackled. And they were very aggressive against the 49ers
00:44:03last week defensively. They're being very aggressive today against the Cowboys.
00:44:09Deion Sanders back in at wide receiver. He comes left.
00:44:14Michael Irvin in the slot to the right with Kevin Williams outside him.
00:44:21Third down.
00:44:24Sanders went out of bounds. Came back in. Now he's pointing but there's no penalty marker down.
00:44:31Lenny McGill with the corner with the coverage. Excuse me. If Lenny McGill was on him you're
00:44:36going to see here's McGill. Now what he's saying is that Deion is saying that he was knocked out
00:44:41of bounds that after five yards you can't be hit. And of course he did. You see Lenny McGill
00:44:47knocked him out of bounds. But that's Deion's fault. That's Deion Sanders' fault because he
00:44:51was too close to the line. That's inexperience as a wide receiver. You never get that close to
00:44:58the sideline that one bump can knock you out of bounds. John Jett back deep for Dallas to punt it.
00:45:07And the dangerous Antonio Freeman will have a chance with this one. A line drive kick.
00:45:13Freeman tripped up by David Lang.
00:45:21There are some cheese heads at Texas Stadium. The Packer fans are here in abundance.
00:45:28I assume they're Packer fans. Why else would you wear one of those? Yeah you wouldn't remember.
00:45:32You can't you can't beat a nice cheese head though. Here's Favre back to throw it. Going deep.
00:45:38Going deep. Got a man open. Anthony Morgan just couldn't turn it on. Favre had him.
00:45:45Yeah they know one thing. Larry Brown is a good corner. Larry Brown is a consistent corner.
00:45:50But Larry Brown doesn't have real good speed. So anytime that they can get speed and they had
00:45:56Morgan on and they had Robert Brooks on him earlier, you can outrun Larry Brown if he doesn't
00:46:02have any help. And the Packers know that and I think they're going to do that all day. That's
00:46:07not a bad game plan. Until they get him some help. Yeah and they're just staying away from Deion.
00:46:11That's one of the problems with Deion. If you want to play that much man-to-man, you can go to other
00:46:16guys other than Deion's man. Favre back to throw it again. Incomplete. To the high bounce off the hand of
00:46:29Robert Brooks. And you see how hard Brett Favre throws that ball. That went off Brooks's
00:46:35hands and I watched it and it went like 20 yards in the air. I mean watch when he puts the hump to
00:46:42it and he does right here. I mean and he comes and he puts that on it. That is putting mustard on it.
00:46:47That's why they have the hole in the roof at Texas Stadium. That ball hit Larry Brown in the head
00:46:53and off of Brown's head it went 20 more yards and out of bounds. Third and 10. Packers are the best
00:47:01in the league on third and short. Here he is chased by Darren Woodson. Favre as he throws it. The pass is incomplete.
00:47:09Dorsey Levin's jump for it. Favre was chased by Woodson. The Cowboys came with a surprise
00:47:16blitz. And that's what that's that's what used to kill Mike Holgren when Brett Favre was younger
00:47:21his first couple years. He would just throw the ball away and he throws the ball away in the
00:47:26middle. That's one thing you never do. If you're going to throw it away, throw it away to the
00:47:31sideline. Throw it away out of bounds but don't throw it away in the middle where you got all
00:47:36those white jerseys. Deion Sanders back deep for the Cowboys. Craig Hendrick to punt it.
00:47:43He's got a strong leg but Sanders is going to have a chance with this one.
00:47:47Green Bay 17, Dallas 14. Second quarter 12.22 left before halftime. Emmitt Smith.
00:48:04Just a yard or so. Stopped by George Koontz.
00:48:09Although that was man to man. Eggman back screen pass. Emmitt Smith.
00:48:15First down Dallas and it's still going on to the 40.
00:48:22And then Wayne Simmons finally says hey if we're going to get this guy down someone better hit the
00:48:27guy. Because Emmitt Smith is a very very strong package and he is going to run through arm tackles
00:48:34and you see Wayne Simmons finally hit him at the end. He said I've had enough of that.
00:48:39Because they weren't getting him down. This is the thing where Charles Haley is still valuable.
00:48:44He is really a very bright guy and a bright football guy and he is into the game all the time
00:48:53with all those defensive players. First down Emmitt Smith. Just got about three over the surge.
00:49:02Behind 2 and A and Nate Newton back. Yeah he's back. That was in there behind Nate Newton and
00:49:09Mark 2 and A. Anytime they want to get to power I mean that's not that's not bad to get in. In fact
00:49:16anywhere you go on that cowboy line you're going to be in behind you know 330 or 340 pounds a guy.
00:49:24Every one of them. I mean they you know they're really about size 58 and they wear size 48
00:49:30jerseys. That's why they're so tight. So you can't grab them. Nothing to grab. No cloth.
00:49:35Hey Emmitt Smith.
00:49:37Picked his way again to midfield. That's very close to another Dallas first down tripped up
00:49:44by George Coons. You know in the other quarterback when your defense is out there you're always
00:49:49looking at those first downs. You don't want them to get first down. You want to get back in there
00:49:54and get the ball. And that's what Brett Favre is thinking now because there are some things that
00:49:58they can do offensively. Yep. They have that two tight end one side two wide receiver the other
00:50:03that's pretty good going against Larry Brown deep is pretty good. So he knows they have some
00:50:08things they can do against this cowboy defense if they can just get back in there.
00:50:19They're going to measure Aikman took advantage of this to go over to the sideline and talk with
00:50:24Wade Wilson. This is one when you're on defense you just as soon it would be a first down because
00:50:30if not it's going to be third and inches and it'll be another down.
00:50:33And this this isn't a bad down. You have your Barry Switzer you want to go for it on fourth
00:50:39down if you don't make it this third and inches is a good down for play pass you get him up in there
00:50:45then you fake that run and you go after a big one. But if you're going to do that
00:50:49you're going to say if we do that and don't hit it then we're going to come back and run on fourth
00:50:55down. Ron Stone has checked in as one of the two tight ends in an eligible position.
00:51:09Yeah they say ineligible number playing eligible
00:51:12position. Right. This would be a great down for a play pass.
00:51:15Emmitt Smith's got more than enough for a first. About eight.
00:51:24All right J.B. Emmitt Smith shaken up on that last play there checking his right arm right hand.
00:51:29Yeah it looks like the right hand or right wrist Sherman Williams is in there now.
00:51:35Aikman's coming from Butler the pass is complete to Irvin.
00:51:39That's a catch. Yeah that shows how tough a quarterback is and how tough Troy Aikman is.
00:51:45Yeah I mean you think all these guys they get the money and they get all this stuff.
00:51:49This is a play before where Emmitt Smith got hurt and you're just going to see right at the end. I
00:51:54mean he just worked so hard to just keep going going going that he is going to get some things
00:51:59at the end of the play. And right there he just comes down on his hand and wrist.
00:52:03Watch Troy Aikman throw the ball. He's going to get the rush and he has to step in and throw
00:52:07the ball. Know that he's going to get the hit and he throws a perfect throw out there to Michael Irvin.
00:52:13Again Butler on the blitz.
00:52:20First down for Dallas. I've always felt that Leroy Butler the closer he gets to the line of
00:52:26scrimmage is a better player. That when he's up there blitzing he's very good at it.
00:52:31When he's playing up tight to the line he's very good. And I think that he is average when he's off.
00:52:37Well today he ought to be very good. He's been very good. First down Dallas.
00:52:42Pitches back to Sherman Williams. He's got blockers in front. He had Larry Allen out in front.
00:52:50You know that's one thing about the the Dallas Cowboys and Ernie Zampezian call and plays.
00:52:56Anytime they have to get the momentum back they always go to the run.
00:53:04Face mask violation against Green Bay. Emmitt Smith coming back in. He landed on what?
00:53:10Face mask. Other defense number 96. The five yard penalty only. Repeat first down.
00:53:16Emmitt Smith landed on his funny bone. There's got to be another dignified name for it but funny
00:53:20bone is good enough right now. Well that funny bone is that one your elbow isn't it? Yeah.
00:53:24Where you get hit and then your whole arm goes numb. Well that carpet down there. We've been
00:53:30down there in that field and that's just that's just carpet over cement. That's hard. That's pretty
00:53:35hard. When you come down any bone you're going to feel it in other parts. It won't be funny.
00:53:42Emmitt Smith is deep and Aikman gives him the handoff and Emmitt Smith's inside the 20
00:53:48yard line.
00:53:50To about the 17 yard line stopped finally by George Teague and this is what the 49ers couldn't
00:53:56do against Green Bay. Yeah and this is what the Packers do and that's what the Packers have had
00:54:01trouble with against this team and this is what the Cowboys do so well. It's just when when they
00:54:06have to use that big offensive line to wear you down and give them a heavy dose Emmitt Smith.
00:54:12Good block by Nate Newton. Yeah I mean I mean that's the place you get. I mean just get behind
00:54:17Nate. I mean he'll just block out the whole side. Yeah. I mean he comes here boom OPEC 61.
00:54:23He just blocks out half the field especially when you're on that ground. Emmitt again.
00:54:29Not much there this time in that same direction.
00:54:33But this is a way they get the momentum back and this is what Fritz Schirmer knows now
00:54:38that you have to you have to stop the you have to stop the run.
00:54:48Again they know the whole thing that Michael Irvin is going to be physical
00:54:51and you better be physical on him. That's way away from the play but it's still physical.
00:55:03Second and 10. Eggman rolls chased by Reggie White.
00:55:09That's one thing Troy Eggman doesn't want to do is because he has a bad back and then he has
00:55:14two bad knees and two bad calves and he doesn't want to have to scramble.
00:55:19Again Michael Irvin has his guy beat and the ball was thrown but it was thrown low
00:55:23where only he could catch it. That was the good news. The bad news is it was thrown low and out
00:55:28of bounds. Third and 10. Deion Sanders. He's going to have to do it again.
00:55:35Out of bounds. Third and 10. Deion Sanders. Split wide left. 12th play of this drive coming up.
00:55:49Emmitt Smith sent to Eggman's left. Going to stay in the block.
00:55:55Incomplete. Kevin Williams the intended receiver. It was a good throw. Newsom is down.
00:56:03Greg Newsom has really been getting worked on over there. They've put every receiver. They
00:56:08have Irvin on him. They put Williams on him. They've been going to work over there and he's
00:56:12done a real good job. I mean he's the outside corner there. He's covering Kevin Williams.
00:56:17He looks he gets a pretty good jump. Just gets his left hand in there and then his right hand in.
00:56:23That looked like he might have pulled a hamstring on that stretch. Yeah right on that stretch there
00:56:28when he was trying to grab him and Kevin Williams was kind of pulling him.
00:56:35Because it is warm down there and if you don't have a lot of fluids especially coming from
00:56:40Green Bay they didn't build up a lot of fluids in their body during their week
00:56:44and they can cramp up in this game. 17-14 Green Bay. Second quarter.
00:56:51Chris Bonio. If you look at the temperature over 70 down on the field. Bonio going for his 29th
00:57:00straight from 34 yards out. Nova checks the holder. Bonio. 29 in a row including the regular season
00:57:10successes and we have a tie. 17-17. That was a big third down play by the Packers and
00:57:19Reggie White putting pressure on Troy Aikman and getting him to scramble. But like I said
00:57:25Troy Aikman is a is a great quarterback. He's had a heck of a year but he's really been banged up.
00:57:29He had the bad back and I think that caused both knees to be bad. He's had both calves and
00:57:35he said he's really never really never recovered from those things all year and
00:57:40the last thing he wants to do is have to run. The word on Newsom John is that he just had the wind
00:57:47knocked out of him and he will be back. Yeah I think you get a long drive like that and that
00:57:52was what a 14 or 15 play drive and the Packers aren't going to have the conditioning to take
00:57:59a lot of those drives because you know you're up there in Green Bay and when you got like none
00:58:04degrees you don't really fill your body with fluid. None degrees can be uncomfortable. Well
00:58:09none and then wind chill you get below none degrees and then so you don't drink a lot of
00:58:15fluids and then you don't have anything to sweat. Now you like Nate Newton he's been here it's been
00:58:20warm he drinks a lot of fluids so he has a lot of stuff to sweat out. Maybe the Green Bay guys don't
00:58:27have as much and that could show on them in the second half if they have a lot of those type of
00:58:32drives in their defense. Bonio kickoff. It's going to be Antonio Freeman at the goal line.
00:58:38Freeman around the corner to the 28. Knocked down by Darren Woodson. What a player he is.
00:58:51He's one of those guys we're talking about Leroy Butler Darren Woodson a lot like that
00:58:55the closer to the line of scrimmage the better player he is.
00:58:59Flag on the field on the kickoff return it's going to be against Green Bay.
00:59:03You know with a guy like Brett Favre in a passing game like the Packers this isn't as big a deal.
00:59:08By the receiving team number 64 to 10 yard penalty. First down.
00:59:15Big Yurko Yurkovich. Well Yurko's on the wedge. I'm not sure why he's on the wedge. He is on the
00:59:22team. And the the bad thing about it the bad thing about it is he's the guy that has the
00:59:31guy that has to catch a ball if it comes in. He's a guy in the pregame that can do everything.
00:59:38He had our camera out there and he was taking pictures before the game.
00:59:41Well he still had a cover on the lens though. Well he didn't learn they didn't get that far
00:59:46to the deal. They just got the camera on the shoulder. Boy this feels good here.
00:59:51It's a good stance. Favre gets the edge of Bennett. Bennett outside the 20 about the 21.
01:00:02You know you can just feel that Brett Favre is a lot more calm now. I thought in that first
01:00:06quarter that he had too much adrenaline and then you hit a couple things and now he's calm. You
01:00:11can just tell his mannerisms the way he moves around the way he is in the huddle that he has
01:00:17calmed down. I thought that was one of the things that really impressed me last week with Brett
01:00:21Favre against the 49ers was how calm he was. And he got off to such a great start last week
01:00:27and after he got settled down today the touchdown pass has started to fly. This is complete to
01:00:34Jackson outside the 30 about the 32. Let's again send you down to the sidelines and Matt Millen.
01:00:41Yeah guys the funny thing you know the defense came to the sideline and Fritz
01:00:44Shermer their defensive coordinator started yelling them hey drink your water drink your
01:00:48water and so they came over and they handed him water and they all looked at it and he said drink
01:00:52this stuff don't look at it. Guys back to you. Well here's Fritz he's drinking it or maybe he's
01:00:59giving him a speech about drinking it. You tell him this is how to drink you put it down here
01:01:05and you lift it up there and you open it and down it goes here's far
01:01:13not much. You know the funny thing about Matt Millen being down there in the sideline and
01:01:19you know the guy saying here drink it not drink it that makes sense to Matt because he was a
01:01:23linebacker. There's someone down on the other side of that fan. He got hit right into the fan. I'm not
01:01:29even sure it's a player. Fritz is all right. Fritz Shermer. You're going to see right here Brooks
01:01:39gets the ball and he gets hit out of bounds. When Darren Woodson delivers a blow you don't get up
01:01:46until you're about five yards outside. Score is tied at 17. Mike Holmgren the head coach there's
01:01:53Jim Eddie over on the Dallas sideline. He has moved down. He had been for most of the year
01:01:59upstairs in the press box when John Blake left to take the head coaching job at the University
01:02:04of Oklahoma. Jim Eddie moved down on the sideline and you can just see that the fans here were into
01:02:10the football game. Then when Gil Haskell was injured I think that took a lot of these fans
01:02:16out of the football game took a lot of everyone out of the game. But I mean this is a much bigger
01:02:23concern right now. Second and about nine as the Packers break the huddle ready to resume play.
01:02:34Edgar Bennett and Dorsey Levin behind Favre. He moves him around.
01:02:41Second and nine. Bennett in motion.
01:02:44Favre outside to Bennett incomplete. Deion Sanders the defender.
01:02:54One thing about Adam Timmerman you're going to watch him here and you say he's a rookie but
01:02:58he knows how to he knows how to play like Eric Williams. The first two you get your hand up
01:03:03there in his jersey and then boom just right up there to his face like an uppercut. Then you bring
01:03:09it back down so you don't get caught with it. But Adam Timmerman is playing pretty well these last
01:03:13two games. A seventh round draft choice. Four wide receivers for Green Bay. Third down at eight.
01:03:21Five minutes to go before the half. Favre trying to run that screen pass again. He does to Bennett.
01:03:28And Bennett does not get the first down. Missed by a yard. Tony Tolbert
01:03:35retreated to make the stop. And again that was that second down pass. That one that
01:03:41the Cowboys really had good defense on second down Brett Favre had no one to throw to.
01:03:46And that created the third and long and a screen wasn't enough to get a first down for him.
01:03:52Craig Hendrick the punt is averaging forty three and a half yards and Deion Sanders back deep.
01:03:57Hendrick has got a very strong leg when he catches it. It'll stay up there a long time.
01:04:03That's going to be up there a long time. Sanders gets away from it. Bounding down.
01:04:09And out of bounds at about the one yard line. Maybe inside the one. What a punt by Craig Hendrick.
01:04:17What a bounce by Craig Hendrick. That was the old rule that if you stand on the tent if it goes over
01:04:22your head let it go. Deion Sanders was back there. It was going to be a one yard line.
01:04:28If it goes over your head let it go. Deion Sanders was back there. It was going over his
01:04:33head. He let it go. And it took one of those artificial turf bounces and went out on about
01:04:38what the half yard line. And the official still has his marker down there at the half yard line.
01:04:46There is our halftime group here. They're ready. They're looking the wrong way.
01:04:50They're looking like this way and the field is that way. That's right Terry. Okay okay.
01:04:54Turn around. You turn around. You turn around. There you go. Now you're talking.
01:05:00J.B. Terry. What the heck are they looking at? At the camera.
01:05:04They're coming up at halftime but the ball's right underneath them. That's right.
01:05:11Eggman gives to Emmitt Smith. Emmitt Smith flashes out. Outside the 20. 25. First down.
01:05:17They get some breathing room. George Teague knocked him out of bounds.
01:05:20Boy is that a big play. That's as big as goal line coming off the goal line.
01:05:24That time he got right in there behind Larry Allen. Eric Williams and Larry Allen. You watch
01:05:30the right side. He's going to keep this thing tight and he wants to get it right in here. Watch
01:05:35the block that Larry Allen gets here. I mean he fires out. They get a double team on Yurkovich
01:05:41and they just hold that thing. Eric Williams seals the outside and there's the hole. Larry
01:05:46Allen blocked two men. Larry Allen blocks two men a lot of times. I mean I've said this and
01:05:51Larry Allen I think is the best guard in football. In fact I think he's the best offensive lineman
01:05:56in football. Emmitt Smith. Emmitt breaks one tackle and gets out the 35 to let the 32s a
01:06:03packer down. For a quick report let's again go back down field side to Matt Millen. You know
01:06:09they took Gil Haskell off and took him to the hospital but the sideline said you know that
01:06:13the doctor said that he had feeling and things looked good. They were going to take him to the
01:06:17hospital and check him but at this point looks good. Back to you guys. Yurkovich is down
01:06:23and you might we might get Matt Millen to check on Yurko. Yeah well he was he was a guy here's
01:06:30Yurko right here number 64 and you see that he gets cut by Eric Williams. See Eric Williams had
01:06:36one of those sprint cutoffs. It's going to be right here right on the right side right there.
01:06:41You see him come down. He gets his left knee came right down on that left knee.
01:06:51That's the thing when the ball goes away and you got that tackle has to come down.
01:06:57Get away from me. He doesn't want any help. I mean he's he's one of those guys that's going
01:07:03to walk on the field and he's going to walk off the field and right now he is yelling at Eric
01:07:08Williams. I'm gonna get you. You better plan to stay a long time. That's what we call a sprint
01:07:14cutoff and cut from behind. You remember for years all players complained about the 49ers
01:07:19doing that to him. Yeah. Bob Kapurski in taking Yurkovich's place. Second and four.
01:07:31Two runs by Emmitt Smith have gotten the Cowboys out from the half yard line.
01:07:39Smith again behind me. Smith knocked out of bounds into the kicking screen.
01:07:55George Koontz knocked him out of bounds knocked him into the kicking net.
01:08:02Yeah but Emmitt Smith knows that you can't let up when you get close to the sideline.
01:08:08You're going to see the there's the one right there where Eric Williams got John Yurkovich
01:08:16and then they come here now they're going to get Emmitt Smith but but that's Emmitt Smith and when
01:08:21you when you get close to the sideline you can't let up. I mean usually you want to turn back in
01:08:26and take them on but when you let up and you're still in bounds you are going to get knocked into
01:08:31kicking tees. Third down. Eggman back to throw it. Michael Irvin gets the first down.
01:08:44And you can see Doug Evans he knew that he was too far off.
01:08:48It's one of those things you could just see coming. Yep. And Doug Evans couldn't do anything
01:08:52about it. Michael Irvin by the way has caught five passes for 36 yards two touchdowns. He's
01:08:59the ninth NFL receiver to gain over a thousand yards in the postseason. All right he's right here
01:09:04and you see Evans come up and he makes a move on him then he gets inside now he's going to make
01:09:09the out move on him. See Evans started inside then Michael Irvin gave him that little slap
01:09:13and went to the outside. Enough for the first down excuse me John. No I was just saying that
01:09:19Michael Irvin is a is a heck of a receiver catching the ball doing all those things
01:09:23but also the process of getting open he's one of the best. This is a Dallas timeout they only
01:09:29have one remaining. Yurkovich headed for the locker room for I don't know why Michael Irvin
01:09:39is over there in the he's in the Packer huddle and he's arguing with all the Packers. I imagine
01:09:46it goes back to hurting Yurkovich this guy and that block from behind. Yeah then they better
01:09:53go talk to Eric Williams about that. Nate Newton just walked over there. Eric Williams didn't walk
01:09:59over there. Yurko's walking pretty good. Yeah and I don't know that I don't know that Emmitt Smith
01:10:06and Michael Irvin would be representing the offensive line. I think it's something that'd be
01:10:11a mistake. I think I think that you know they were physical last week against the 49ers and Jerry Rice
01:10:16and it paid off for them. I think what Michael Irvin is saying that you can't be physical against
01:10:22me and that's what I think it's all about. I'd guess he'd be back that's just a guess.
01:10:31First and ten Dallas. Well it's one of those things you can't hurt me and if you did I'm not
01:10:35going to show it. Aikman back to throw. Chased out of the pocket by Lombardi and Aikman. Cross midfield.
01:10:47Uh-oh we got a fight back here with Eric Williams and Gilbert Brown.
01:10:55Again Eric Williams gets him he pushes him down and these guys aren't going to take it. Gilbert
01:11:00Brown is about 350 pounds. He's bigger than Eric Williams. Eric Williams about 340. Gilbert Brown is
01:11:07usually a defensive tackle plays over a guard. On that play they played him over Eric Williams.
01:11:12We got to get him some bigger shoulder pads. I know but I mean those are just two big old guys
01:11:17just going after it. Green Bay 17 Dallas 17. Time of possession Dallas has had the ball
01:11:2721 minutes and 24 seconds. Green Bay just just over six and a half minutes. Eric Williams there
01:11:35number 79 just started about three fights and caused a couple injuries and a couple of guys
01:11:41to go out. Made a bunch of guys mad like that one Reggie White. Reggie White's been mad at him
01:11:47wanted a penalty against him. We saw Gilbert Brown mad at him. John Yurkovich has left the game. The
01:11:54word is that he won't be back because of Eric Williams. Second and one. Flag on the play. This
01:12:03is Emmitt Smith. Emmitt gets enough yards for the first down but there was a penalty marker early.
01:12:09Doug Evans knocked him out of bounds. It was Gilbert Brown who jumped off sides and then
01:12:13Nate Newton still got him. Gilbert Brown who weighs 340 350 pounds jumps off sides. Nate
01:12:20Newton waits for him and then drives him back. You talk about a strong man. Defense number 94.
01:12:27Five yard penalty. Repeat second down. Watch here's Gilbert Brown here and here's he's a guy
01:12:32that jumps off sides and there's Nate Newton there. Now you're going to see him move there
01:12:37and then Nate just takes him gets underneath him and drives him. Now that's a drive block.
01:12:42If you want to know what a drive block is by an offensive lineman what Nate Newton
01:12:47did to Gilbert Brown on that last play is a perfect drive block. First and 10. Dallas ball
01:12:54with the Green Bay 44. Darryl Johnston was the man on the move. Aikman going deep for Kevin Williams.
01:13:01Incomplete.
01:13:07Kevin Williams has been big. You know he started in the Arizona game you know throwing to
01:13:12catching balls. Troy Aikman throwing to Kevin Williams and then in the playoff game last week
01:13:18he was big. He hasn't caught a pass today but I think that he took some of the pressure off
01:13:23Michael Irvin and then today you just feel if you're playing championship games and championship
01:13:29football Kevin Williams can't be your number one guy. Michael Irvin has to be that guy. He has
01:13:35foot wide to the right. Kevin Williams is. Irvin the other way. Aikman. Michael Irvin who spins away from
01:13:44Newton and finally out of bounds at about the 16. Mike Breyer took him out of bounds.
01:13:51And we talk about how big and strong Michael Irvin is and getting open but also after he
01:13:56catches the ball he's out here now he's against Craig Newsome. Now watch after he catches the
01:14:01ball he's going to give a spin move. See he's in there then he's going to spin to the outside.
01:14:06Newsome thinking inside he spins to the outside and goes right up the sideline. Let's see how
01:14:12how Reggie White's going against Eric Williams there. Reggie White is so strong. He is.
01:14:19Reggie White is so strong that Eric Williams beat him to the punch. First and ten. Aikman looking deep.
01:14:28Kevin Williams makes the catch at about the seven yard line. Newsome again the coverage. Aikman says
01:14:35hurry up we only got one time out left. And again good pass protection by Eric Williams. You see him
01:14:40right down there. That's the area that Troy Aikman throws the ball. If he's going to throw to his right
01:14:46then you better not let a lot of penetration to get to your right.
01:14:50Eric Williams did it that time. Second and one Emmitt Smith.
01:15:03This is a drive. This is mixture. This is about pass protection. This is about throwing to Williams
01:15:09throwing to Michael Irvin. This is about running the ball to Emmitt Smith behind your big offensive
01:15:14line that's drive blocking. First and goal from the one. Remember where this started? Way back at
01:15:20the Dallas half yard line. And that was that great block coming off the goal line where Larry Allen
01:15:26got two. Yep. And really got him out of trouble. This is a Green Bay timeout. And I think this is
01:15:32the second long drive the Cowboys have had. And I think this will show on this Green Bay Packer
01:15:39defense in the second half. They're rotating their guys. They have eight defensive linemen.
01:15:44They don't have John Yurkovich now. But they keep rotating these guys. And they're going to have to.
01:15:50They have eight defensive linemen playing four positions. And they need a halftime right now.
01:15:58At the one yard line. Dallas first and goal.
01:16:0256 seconds left to play in the first half. And the Cowboys have one timeout left.
01:16:09First and goal at the one. 17-17 tie.
01:16:21Eggman in this drive. Three out of four. Smith in this drive. Four carries for 37 yards.
01:16:27Emmitt will be deep. And you would expect him
01:16:31to make the probe at the touchdown. He got the first one. He'll probably get the last one.
01:16:39No signal yet. Packers come out of there with the ball.
01:16:46That's the first time I heard a whistle though. Yeah, me too.
01:16:49They're saying no. But Sean Jones came out of there with that ball.
01:16:54And I didn't hear a whistle until after Sean Jones had it.
01:17:01Dallas lines up in a hurry. 30 seconds left. They have one timeout remaining. Emmitt Smith again.
01:17:07Emmitt Smith touchdown. They knocked him backwards but he got in.
01:17:14And the Cowboys recapture the lead.
01:17:20Emmitt wants that ball.
01:17:26What a competitor. He got that drive started coming off the goal line and he should have
01:17:32finished it. Which he did. That time he didn't go in high. He went in underneath all those big guys.
01:17:38First time he went over the top. That didn't work. And that time he got
01:17:41right in behind Larry Allen the way they got that drive started.
01:17:45Ponyo for the extra point. No good.
01:17:49There's an all-mountain guy right there.
01:17:53I could say who but I think I'm going to have to take a pick. You say why don't you
01:17:58take one of these guys here. I think I'd probably take him. I'd take him. Yeah.
01:18:03We can't give away the team but we'll get the team.
01:18:07We'll get the team. We'll get the team.
01:18:10And you can see that the Cowboys have a good lead.
01:18:13take him I'd take him yeah give away the team but we'll get there anyway wasn't
01:18:19interesting yesterday out Mike holding and got here yeah cowboys for the 96
01:18:26all-american team we're still working on 95 we do it in 96 but it's a team in 95
01:18:32based on what they've done this year yeah that guy who made that sign didn't
01:18:36know that 96 will be next year maybe you pick him next year
01:18:39Mike Holman wanted to change up the luck of the Green Bay Packers and do
01:18:43something different so he led the team here to practice by motorcycle yesterday
01:18:48Bono kicks off to Antonio Freeman who retreats about a yard deep in the end
01:18:54zone
01:19:00came around the corner Antonio Freeman saying that he was down when he got hit
01:19:06Bob Stenner has arrived he was going fast he thought it was a race and all it
01:19:12was was a little escort and a little kneel down leads to a little
01:19:16more you talk about the intensity and the
01:19:20intensity leads to things like this and we've had a lot of things happen in this
01:19:25first half and every player realizes the finality of a championship game
01:19:33back at Texas Stadium with John Madden I've had summer all 24 17 the Cowboys
01:19:40leading the Packers yeah I think this is a big thing here Pat this time of
01:19:46possession you look the Packers only had the ball seven minutes the Cowboys had
01:19:50it 23 minutes so you can talk about what the Packers should have done
01:19:54offensively they should have run more they should do this more they did when
01:19:58you only have the ball seven minutes you only get so many shots and I think that
01:20:02was pretty good you know coming away with 17 points you see the other thing
01:20:06is because you only have it seven minutes you only have four first down
01:20:10yeah you don't win many games you don't stay that
