00:00:00Back in New England, Mike Reilly now in his third year as the head coach of the San Diego
00:00:06Chargers.
00:00:07Won and 15 last year, and it shows you what the organization thought of him, for him to
00:00:11even retain his job coming into this season.
00:00:14Bill Belichick, second year as the head coach in New England, he has had success, his defense
00:00:18has had, dealing and containing Doug Flutie in the past, and that will be the challenge
00:00:26set out for him today.
00:00:27Wade Ritchie to kick it off, New England has won the toss, they'll receive it, Kevin Faulk
00:00:31and Patrick Pass are deep.
00:00:33And the ball comes off the tee, so they'll reset it, we'll get underway.
00:00:40Weather conditions here in Foxborough, it's been a foggy weekend, yesterday more so than
00:00:46today.
00:00:47We had heard rumors about 70 degree temperatures in sunny skies, not the case, 59 degrees,
00:00:53very cloudy, humidity is high, and the wind may be a factor, 15 miles an hour.
00:00:58The wind has been a problem in this stadium in the past, gusting and swirling, and it's
00:01:02going to really affect the quarterbacks as well as the receivers' ability to adjust to
00:01:06the football.
00:01:07Kevin Faulk, from the goal line, off the Ritchie kick, here's Faulk, angling to the outside,
00:01:13trying to cut it towards the sideline, and twirled down as he crosses the 30-yard line
00:01:17by Ronnie Jenkins on special teams, 32-yard return.
00:01:22Major storyline here today, Tom Brady, the development, just his third NFL start, in
00:01:28for the injured Drew Bledsoe, who is still at least a week away from light workouts.
00:01:33And one thing Bill Belichick told us in our meetings, Tom Brady is the most improved player
00:01:37that he has seen on this roster from last year's team.
00:01:40One thing they're impressed with the young quarterback is he hasn't thrown any interceptions,
00:01:44done a good job of protecting the football, not turning it over.
00:01:48Terry Glenn has come onto the field in a 3-wide receiver look to open up, and a 1st-and-10
00:01:54from the 32.
00:01:55Shotgun, Brady, underneath the coverage, able to find his receiver, David Patton, for a
00:02:00gain of 2, he tried to turn it upfield, a modest gain on 1st down, Junior Sale, stopped,
00:02:05along with Molden.
00:02:06Patriots offense, what a recovery for Joe Andruzzi.
00:02:10Injured last week, Andruzzi in the lineup, despite the injured knee.
00:02:17Defense and receivers, Antoine Smith, San Diego is familiar with him because of all
00:02:21of their Buffalo connections, we'll get into that momentarily.
00:02:24Terry Glenn will see action today, his first of the season after serving his suspension.
00:02:28On a handoff, Smith up to the gut, and not much there, a 2-yard gain up the middle, and
00:02:33Rodney Harrison, first man to greet him.
00:02:36San Diego defense, even amidst the 1-and-15 season, the defense, they were steady last
00:02:41year, hard to believe with what they put up in the end.
00:02:45Wiley and Johnson, the bookend, pass rushers, the linebackers might as well get a timeshare
00:02:51for Junior Sale in Hawaii, the way he's been to the formal 10 straight years, and the secondary,
00:02:56newcomers, Molden and McNeil, the free agents that John Butler went out and got during the
00:03:01offseason.
00:03:02Out of the shotgun, a flag comes down, and it was Johnson on the rush, who may have jumped.
00:03:09We will hear from Terry McCauley, our referee, for the first time today.
00:03:13Offside, defense, number 99, unabated to the quarterback, 5-yard penalty, third down.
00:03:21That's Ray Lee Johnson, that's his game, he gets to the quarterback, he's got to jump
00:03:26early, you see him right there, nothing to really draw him off, he just wants to get
00:03:29to the quarterback, 10-and-a-half sacks in the 99th season, missed most of last year
00:03:34with an injured knee, so he's been having a pretty productive season so far here, 2001
00:03:39season, he needs to get to the quarterback, he'll just have to time it up a little bit.
00:03:43Changes a third-and-six to a third-and-one, and up the middle for Smith, first down on
00:03:47New England.
00:03:48Out near midfield, a seven-yard burst, and give some credit to Greg Robinson-Randall,
00:03:54making that space for Smith to work through.
00:03:58The Patriots have been trying to find someone to carry the load in the running game since
00:04:02the departure of Curtis Martin, and now Antwon Smith is going to get that opportunity today,
00:04:07and pretty much for most of the season here, so they're going to ask him to do a lot in
00:04:11the running game.
00:04:12Out of the shotgun from the 49-yard line, Brady again, they set it up for Glenn, his
00:04:16first touch, and Glenn hurdling into San Diego territory and down at the 45-yard line, that's
00:04:22a seven-yard hookup.
00:04:24How much does this change the New England offense, Solomon, getting Terry Glenn back?
00:04:28I think just his presence on the football field, I think, affects their offense immensely.
00:04:32It takes the double coverage off of Troy Brown, a player who's been very productive as a
00:04:36wide receiver for the Patriots, so just the presence of Terry Glenn on the field, I think,
00:04:40helps to open up the passing game for the Patriots.
00:04:42What a soap opera it's been.
00:04:44Four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
00:04:47Belichick suspended him for the season when he failed to return to camp, and an arbitrator
00:04:52ruled that he is eligible to come back.
00:04:54Brady on the move, and Brown cannot bring it in.
00:04:59It would have been a first-down throw for New England.
00:05:02Instead, they'll face a third and short.
00:05:05And I talked to the Patriots' offensive coordinator, Charlie Wise.
00:05:08He told me that we need Tom Brady to come out and be very accurate at the beginning of the game.
00:05:12He struggled with accuracy early in both of their last two ballgames, and he's come out,
00:05:17he's made a couple of completions, but that drop there by Troy Brown, it's what a young
00:05:21quarterback needs for his receivers to make the crucial catches, particularly when the
00:05:25ball hits them in the hand.
00:05:26Line of scrimmage is the 44.
00:05:28Kevin Falk has checked in the third down back on a third and three.
00:05:33David Patton, the motion man, flags come down.
00:05:38Junior Seau coming over to make the stop.
00:05:40Look at his uniform.
00:05:41We haven't played five minutes of this game.
00:05:44Well, Junior's gonna get dirty.
00:05:45He's a warrior, and that time he came down in the A and B gap, and he likes the time
00:05:50of that blitz when he knows that they're running the football.
00:05:55Number 55, five-yard penalty, first down.
00:05:58And I'll say I will take chances.
00:06:00That's part of his game, and sometimes the chances don't work.
00:06:03You'll see Junior coming up in the gap over the center, Damian Woody, and Bill Belichick
00:06:08says he likes to guess, but 90% of the time he guesses right, because he's so good in
00:06:13his film study and his preparation for football games.
00:06:16Gives him a first down, a first intent at the 39-yard line after the offside's call.
00:06:20Play fake.
00:06:21Well done.
00:06:22Brady's setting it up.
00:06:23In and out to the sideline, and Glenn catches cleanly.
00:06:27At the 19-yard line, a 20-yard pass and catch, and Terry Glenn getting involved early.
00:06:35And the play is effective because Tom Brady, as well as the running back Antoine Smith,
00:06:39they do a good job with the play fake.
00:06:41He'll stick the ball right into his stomach and pull it right out, but this is very poised
00:06:46for a young quarterback.
00:06:47Tom Brady showing some poise on the play action.
00:06:50Excellent route by Terry Glenn.
00:06:52Terry Glenn, he breaks it off, and he's in position to make the catch.
00:06:55Excellent throw.
00:06:57Well-designed play.
00:06:58Terry Glenn coming out being very productive early here in the ballgame.
00:07:01We asked Brady about Glenn during the week of practice.
00:07:04He said, I've never seen a more natural athlete.
00:07:06He stepped right in and didn't miss a beat.
00:07:08On first down, Brady, strong throw to the perimeter, and David Patton catches.
00:07:13Alex Moldom forced him out of bounds.
00:07:16A 9- or 10-yard game, depending upon where they spot the football.
00:07:19And the Patriots in business inside the 10.
00:07:22This is just a timing route to Patton as he breaks it off.
00:07:24Moten's just giving way too much room here, playing too high and can't react to the pass.
00:07:29Nice pass by Tom Brady and excellent pass by Patton.
00:07:32Just a timing route from the receiver to the quarterback.
00:07:35How about the poise of Brady?
00:07:36We sat down with him.
00:07:37I know you were impressed.
00:07:38I was impressed with his confidence.
00:07:40Very young quarterback coming in to replace a guy like Drew Bledsoe,
00:07:43who's thrown for over 3,000 yards in seven consecutive seasons.
00:07:46Big shoes to fill, but he comes out, and he's getting it done early in the ballgame.
00:07:50They wanted to get him out to a good start, good rhythm, and he's doing it so far here today.
00:07:55Inches away from picking up that first down.
00:07:59Drew Bledsoe has been so durable for this New England team through the years.
00:08:04And Tom Brady was just hoping to carve out a niche this year as the backup quarterback.
00:08:09He was brought into camp to compete with Damon Heward, the former Miami Dolphin.
00:08:13Brady wins that backup job and then poof.
00:08:16After the jet game, he finds himself as the full-time starter.
00:08:20He's getting more snaps during the week in terms of preparation,
00:08:23so you're going to see him continue to get better each week
00:08:26as he's getting more snaps with practice and working with the first team.
00:08:31Second and inches for this New England offense.
00:08:34First possession of the game.
00:08:36Timing pass.
00:08:37An incomplete.
00:08:39Terry Glenn for the center.
00:08:41In a matchup with Ryan McNeil.
00:08:43It'll be third and short.
00:08:44And that pass looked like it was overthrown,
00:08:46but really it was just an excellent job by the quarterback for the charges.
00:08:49Ryan McNeil did a good job of jamming Terry Glenn at the line of scrimmage
00:08:53and just really disrupted the timing of the route.
00:08:56So excellent defense.
00:08:57You'll see he'll give him a little room,
00:08:59but then go jamming just a little bit before the ball comes.
00:09:02It was just really good play by Ryan McNeil.
00:09:06Third and inches.
00:09:08Keep this drive going.
00:09:09Inside handoff.
00:09:10Edwards runs into a wall and then pushes himself forward.
00:09:14And it should be enough for a first out.
00:09:18We'll see where they spot it.
00:09:20Just needed a couple of inches after that patent catch.
00:09:27Patriots have come out,
00:09:28and I think they've done a good job of mixing the run with the pass
00:09:31and trying to keep this charge's defense off balance,
00:09:34but the Chargers have had two penalties on this drive,
00:09:36one against Ray Lee Johnson and Junior Seau.
00:09:38That tends to help the offense,
00:09:40and that's something I'm sure the defensive coaches for San Diego
00:09:43is really talking to their players.
00:09:46They have to calm down, settle down.
00:09:48This is their second world trip in as many weeks,
00:09:50so they're going to have to settle down,
00:09:52play a little bit better and not hurt themselves.
00:09:55New England had just 69 yards passing that loss to Miami last week,
00:09:59149 yards of total offense.
00:10:05And now they'll face a first and goal from the 9.
00:10:08Three receivers set.
00:10:10Long drive to open this thing up.
00:10:14Doug Flutie jumping at the bit just to get on this field
00:10:17and start making some magic happen.
00:10:20First and goal.
00:10:21Brady back.
00:10:22Brady avoids the run.
00:10:23Floats it upstairs and out of the end zone.
00:10:27Carroll Dixon was applying that pressure on young Tom Brady,
00:10:31and he did get rid of it.
00:10:33That's why it works.
00:10:34You see Junior Seau, he comes up into the line,
00:10:37and what that does, it forces the offensive lineman to have to jump to him
00:10:40and try to pass protect, but it frees up another player.
00:10:43In this case, Gerald Dixon, he comes right up the middle,
00:10:45and he's scot-free because so much attention is given to Junior Seau,
00:10:49and he knows how to free up other defensive players in order to make plays.
00:10:53Constantly a team player, but he can make big plays in his own right.
00:10:56Second and goal from the 9.
00:10:57First man through.
00:10:58It's Edwards, and San Diego sniffed it out.
00:11:00Ray Lee Johnson, first man to wrap him up,
00:11:02and then you saw all the white jerseys join in.
00:11:05That's a gain of one.
00:11:07Late selection here.
00:11:08I think it's a tad bit conservative.
00:11:10You get inside the red zone, and you run it with your fullback, Mark Edwards.
00:11:14You have no lead blocker against a defense that's one of the best in the league
00:11:18at stopping the run.
00:11:19I think you have to be a little bit more imaginative in terms of things you're
00:11:22going to do trying to get the ball into the end zone.
00:11:24The offense has been stagnant throughout the season.
00:11:27Patriot defensive backs have scored more touchdowns
00:11:29than New England wide receivers.
00:11:31Two to one this year.
00:11:32Not a good sign with five.
00:11:34Not a good sign at all.
00:11:35Third and goal from the 8.
00:11:37Brady has the time.
00:11:39Puts it upstairs and too high once again for Glenn.
00:11:42It'll be fourth down.
00:11:44Double coverage.
00:11:45Glenn dealing with Molden and Jason Perry, and Brady could not find it.
00:11:49Yeah, Perry and Molden, they'll just double right outside,
00:11:52coming over the top there, and that's what Terry Glenn is going to bring.
00:11:56He's going to draw the double coverage.
00:11:58So now you have to find other guys to get open.
00:12:00You're going to have to get the ball to Patton and Troy Brown.
00:12:03And I tell you, the tight end has really been absent from the passing game
00:12:06of the New England Patriots,
00:12:07and that's where they really miss a player like Ben Tolles.
00:12:10New England trying to get on the board first.
00:12:12Adam Vinatieri has been perfect this year, six of six on field goal attempts.
00:12:16This is a 26-yarder.
00:12:18Vinatieri leans into it and bangs it through.
00:12:22So the Patriots with a long drive to open play today
00:12:25against the visiting Chargers.
00:12:283-0 New England in front.
00:12:4713th play, 60-yard drive for New England.
00:12:50Took up just over five minutes of action.
00:12:52A 26-yard field goal from Vinatieri.
00:12:54Kicks it off.
00:12:55Lonnie Jenkins on the return for the Chargers.
00:12:58Here's Jenkins accelerating across the 30-yard line
00:13:01and tackled down to the 32 by Patrick Pesce.
00:13:04A 24-yard return.
00:13:06Doug Slooney will direct the San Diego offense when we return.
00:13:23For the first time this season, San Diego has given up points
00:13:27in the first quarter of a game.
00:13:29They trail New England 3-0.
00:13:31And now Doug Slooney steps onto the field for the first time today
00:13:35to lead this Charger offense.
00:13:37A first and ten from the 32.
00:13:38And Ladanian Tomlinson, the dynamic rookie running back,
00:13:41gets the call on the first play from scrimmage for San Diego
00:13:44in a game three.
00:13:45Bobby Hamilton with the stop.
00:13:48Slooney is from Natick, Massachusetts.
00:13:51He's about 22 miles away from Foxborough,
00:13:53and he still keeps his residence here.
00:13:55But he did stay with the team in the team hotel the last two nights.
00:13:58You know, team curfew.
00:13:59He's got to deal with those kinds of issues.
00:14:01A little focus and concentration.
00:14:02Yeah.
00:14:05Floody excited.
00:14:06He knows that a lot of fans were on his side in the pregame warm-ups.
00:14:09But he said once the game started, these are Patriot fans, not Floody fans.
00:14:14Second and seven from the 35.
00:14:16Floody puts it in the air for the first time and zings it near his side.
00:14:20Nowhere near Jeff Grant.
00:14:23It'll be third and seven.
00:14:24Let's take a look at this San Diego offense.
00:14:26Much improved offense.
00:14:27Offensive line has been better than a year ago.
00:14:29Only five sacks allowed so far.
00:14:31They gave up 50 last year.
00:14:33McIntosh, Rountree, Jaycox, Graham, and Vaughn Parker.
00:14:37Backs and receivers.
00:14:38Well, yes, Floody has been a huge key.
00:14:40But without the man they're calling the offensive LT, Ladanian Tomlinson.
00:14:45I'm not sure this team would be three and one right now.
00:14:47Well, he's an all-purpose back.
00:14:49Prides himself on doing everything well, not just running the ball,
00:14:51but pass catching and blocking as well.
00:14:54Crown getting into it early on a third and seven.
00:14:56Floody way back in the pocket.
00:14:59Floats it out.
00:15:00Graham makes the catch and then hit quickly by Tebucky Jones.
00:15:04A gain of four.
00:15:05They needed seven.
00:15:06And San Diego is forced to punt.
00:15:08Bill Belichick came out and said, hey, we have to win on third down.
00:15:12Something they didn't do a good job last week down in Miami.
00:15:15And already they come out and force the Chargers to have to put the ball in the air.
00:15:19They're facing a third medium.
00:15:21But they just come up, keep everything in front of them.
00:15:23Nice tackle, nice hit by Tebucky Jones on Jeff Graham.
00:15:27And we'll get into what Belichick has figured out over the years in dealing with Floody.
00:15:32And the key is mixing it up and changing it up, showing him different looks.
00:15:36Darren Bennett, who struggled the last two weeks for San Diego, gets a pretty good punt off.
00:15:40And it takes a Charger roll inside the 10.
00:15:43Troy Brown had backed off it.
00:15:45And it'll cost New England field position.
00:15:4853-yard punt.
00:15:49And the Patriots pin back.
00:15:51They lead at 3-0 here in the first.
00:16:06Doug Floody's Chargers coming off a 20-16 loss in Cleveland last week.
00:16:09They let one slip away.
00:16:11Could have moved to 4-0 for the first time since 1994.
00:16:14But give Tim Couch and the Browns some credit, a much-improved football team.
00:16:18A 5-receiver look to open up for New England.
00:16:22On a first and 10 from their own 9.
00:16:24Brady straight back.
00:16:26Brady in some trouble.
00:16:27And sacked.
00:16:28Back at the 1-yard line by Ray Lee Johnson.
00:16:33We told you Ray Lee Johnson is the guy that, he's the sack master on this defense.
00:16:37And what you expose yourself to when you go no-backs and spread it out,
00:16:41there's no one to protect the quarterback.
00:16:43He's got to get rid of the ball much sooner because there's no extra protection
00:16:47to help the offensive linemen once you get some leakage.
00:16:49And Ray Lee Johnson just comes right through and gets the sack on Tom Brady.
00:16:53You expose yourself when you have no backs back.
00:16:55The quarterback has to get rid of the ball much sooner.
00:16:57Loss of 7 on the play.
00:16:59The third sack of the season for Ray Lee Johnson.
00:17:02And now a 2nd and 17 for New England.
00:17:08Flags come down.
00:17:14Tom Brady in a passing situation.
00:17:16He was going back to throw it from his own end zone.
00:17:19False start.
00:17:20Offense.
00:17:21Number 77.
00:17:22Half the distance to the goal.
00:17:242nd half.
00:17:25That's the veteran Mike Compton, the former Lion,
00:17:28on the left side of that New England offensive line.
00:17:33You want to avoid making mistakes anywhere on the football field.
00:17:36When you get down in the shadow of your own end zone,
00:17:38you really have to play more perfect and be more exact in the things you do,
00:17:42whether it's pass protection, getting rid of the ball sooner as a quarterback,
00:17:45and even holding your place on the offensive line.
00:17:48One-yard penalty now.
00:17:492nd and 18.
00:17:50Trying to break free.
00:17:51David Patton.
00:17:52And Brady put it on time to the 10-yard line.
00:17:55A gain of 8.
00:17:56Much better job by Brady there, getting rid of the ball,
00:17:58recognizing the coverage, and finding the open man.
00:18:01He's a young quarterback, so he's going to have some moments
00:18:04where he doesn't quite do the right thing, but here he does.
00:18:07He recognizes the coverage, and he's going with one guy all the way,
00:18:10and he gets rid of the ball before he gets hit.
00:18:12Good job by Tom Brady, standing in the pocket,
00:18:14delivering the ball very accurately while under pressure.
00:18:20Patriots, a 3-10 domination in Miami last week,
00:18:25but they were on the wrong side of it.
00:18:27Brady steps up and throws it.
00:18:31Troy Brown out across the 25-yard line,
00:18:34and a new set of downs for New England to work with on that 17-yard hookup.
00:18:41Tom Brady working on 3rd down,
00:18:44and he does a really good job squeezing this
00:18:46in between Rodney Harrison and Tate Cody.
00:18:48Number 27 coming over to play coverage on Troy Brown,
00:18:52but this is an excellent throw by Tom Brady.
00:18:54I'm impressed with the poise that he's had,
00:18:56but Troy Brown getting open now with the double coverage
00:18:59that is being given over to the other side by Terry Glenn.
00:19:02On 1st down, play action.
00:19:04Brady trying to dump it off in the direction of Mark Edwards.
00:19:07It's incomplete.
00:19:08Pressure again being applied by Ray Lee Johnson.
00:19:11Yeah, he's being pressured, but very poised for the young quarterback.
00:19:14It's a very difficult pass.
00:19:15He understands he's going to get sacked,
00:19:17so he's getting rid of the football.
00:19:18Only threw it in the direction of his fullback, Mark Edwards,
00:19:21but threw the ball right into the ground just to avoid the sack,
00:19:24reset the play, and you know what?
00:19:26You come back up at 2nd and 10 to give yourself a chance
00:19:28to create some positive yards and avoid the sack.
00:19:31Play selection so far for this New England offense.
00:19:34Four rushes, 12 passing plays.
00:19:37At a 2nd and 10, on the pitch.
00:19:39Kevin Faulk trying to juke his way forward
00:19:43and couldn't fake out Orlando Ruff.
00:19:45It's a loss of three.
00:19:46And I'm not sure if it was a broken play,
00:19:48but Kevin Faulk took the toss from Tom Brady
00:19:51and appeared to not know which way he wanted to go,
00:19:54but the line's pulling that way.
00:19:55He needs to continue and get upfield,
00:19:57get outside of the defense.
00:20:00I don't know if that play was well contained.
00:20:02He seemed to not have an understanding
00:20:03of where he wanted to go with the football
00:20:05once he received the toss from Tom Brady.
00:20:06Now at 3rd and 13 from the 23,
00:20:09under 6 minutes to play here in the opening quarter.
00:20:11New England leading at 3-0.
00:20:14Spread formation, four receivers.
00:20:17Operating out of the shotgun.
00:20:19Brady.
00:20:22And Glenn could not grab it.
00:20:24A little bit high.
00:20:26And it looked ugly coming off the fingertips of Brady.
00:20:29And Glenn might have been sensing Rodney Harrison.
00:20:32I think Glenn was pulling the arms down a little quick there.
00:20:35It certainly hit him in the hands.
00:20:36The ball did sail high on Tom Brady.
00:20:39He's throwing under pressure.
00:20:40But this is a catch that Terry Glenn has to make.
00:20:43You know, Tom Brady said,
00:20:44hey, he's the most natural athlete of Terry Glenn.
00:20:47He's the guy that if anyone could do it,
00:20:48just walk right onto the field and produce for you.
00:20:50He felt like Terry Glenn could do that.
00:20:52But as you see, he's far less than 100%.
00:20:55A shank off the side of the foot of Lee Johnson.
00:20:58Tim Dwight tried to move forward,
00:21:00attempting to scoop it up,
00:21:01but it didn't even have enough mustard on it
00:21:03to get down to the 45-yard line.
00:21:06That's a 30-yard putt from Johnson.
00:21:08A great field position for the Chargers.
00:21:21And a first and ten for San Diego from the 47.
00:21:25Off play action, fluting in the air
00:21:28and on time for Curtis Conway into New England territory
00:21:32and a first down for San Diego.
00:21:34For a 17-yard pass play,
00:21:36Malloy and Law in on the coverage.
00:21:38Take a look at the New England defense.
00:21:41Not big names as Roman Pfeiffer continues to get the start
00:21:44ahead of Willie McGinnis, who is available for this team.
00:21:47No Teddy Bruschi today, out with a knee injury,
00:21:49so Ted Johnson shifts over to the outside
00:21:51and the secondary, Law and Smith,
00:21:54Jones and Malloy up the middle.
00:21:57First and ten now from the 36.
00:21:59On again.
00:22:01Tomlinson fighting for the yardage,
00:22:03and he picks up three.
00:22:05Ted Johnson, first man there.
00:22:09Well, LeDanny and Tomlinson
00:22:11grew up watching Emmitt Smith.
00:22:14He's had a Waco, Texas.
00:22:16He was a Cowboy fan and then had a chance to meet Emmitt
00:22:18and his whole perspective of the running back position changed
00:22:21after he spoke with Emmitt and Jerome Bettis.
00:22:23Yeah, he's talked about being a complete back
00:22:26and every down back, one who plays on third,
00:22:28down one who can help protect the quarterback,
00:22:30also being able to catch the ball out of the backfield
00:22:32and run the ball on screens
00:22:34as well as from behind the line of scrimmage.
00:22:36On a second and eight, fluting to the outside
00:22:39and Jeff Graham, Graham extending forward
00:22:42out across the 25-yard line.
00:22:45Mike Grable brought him down low,
00:22:47a nine-yard gain and a first down.
00:22:49Right now, let's head to New York
00:22:50in an NFL Today update with Jim Nantz.
00:22:56First down, Chargers have a Patriot 24.
00:23:03Well, Jimmy, I think Baltimore did get a wake-up call
00:23:07with the Cincinnati Bengals again.
00:23:09You getting that sense?
00:23:10Absolutely.
00:23:11They've been a juggernaut ever since,
00:23:12playing really well on both sides of the ball.
00:23:14A little miscommunication?
00:23:15It doesn't matter.
00:23:16LeDainian Tomlinson bursting through the middle.
00:23:19And out to the 15-yard line, a nine-yard scamper.
00:23:23Grable.
00:23:24You talk about LeDainian Tomlinson's ability
00:23:27or at least his desire to be a complete back.
00:23:29This is one of the things he also talked about
00:23:31is not only being a back who can press the hole
00:23:33and bounce outside.
00:23:34We know he's a cutback runner,
00:23:36but he runs very strong in between the tackles as well.
00:23:38When he came into the room yesterday,
00:23:40I was really impressed with the size
00:23:42of his lower body and his thighs.
00:23:43He's not a small back.
00:23:44Very powerful lower body.
00:23:46Second and one now.
00:23:48San Diego on the move.
00:23:49Under three minutes to play in the first.
00:23:51Motion man is Freddie Jones.
00:23:53Flutie on the gear.
00:23:54Tomlinson trying to push the pile.
00:23:56And couldn't do it.
00:23:58Ted Johnson among those there
00:24:01defensively for the Patriots.
00:24:03That was on a second and one.
00:24:05No gain.
00:24:06It'll be third and short.
00:24:08This Patriots defense has been a little inconsistent.
00:24:12Last week they were creased for 144 yards
00:24:14by Lamar Smith of the Dolphins.
00:24:17But you can see they're stuffing the run right here.
00:24:19They bring 18 new players,
00:24:21three agent players to this team.
00:24:23So they're trying to become more cohesive as a unit.
00:24:26I think this team, defensively anyway,
00:24:28is going to get better as the season goes on.
00:24:32Third and one.
00:24:33Tomlinson, he's got the first down.
00:24:35Tomlinson's on the deck.
00:24:37Bruising back.
00:24:38Picks up five.
00:24:39Down to the ten.
00:24:41And this is just good blocking up front.
00:24:43But it's also Tomlinson hitting it up in there.
00:24:45He's not looking to bounce this.
00:24:47He's going right underneath, behind his fullback.
00:24:50And he just hits it up in there.
00:24:52Not a really big back,
00:24:53but we talk about the strength of his lower body.
00:24:55He's hitting it up in there.
00:24:56Very courageous running.
00:24:58Running it right behind his fullback.
00:25:00He's taking it right up in there.
00:25:02Have to give him credit.
00:25:03Fred McQuarrie is blocking for his tailback.
00:25:05Ladini and Tomlinson very productive so far
00:25:07in this first four games this season.
00:25:09A first and goal just inside the ten.
00:25:12They cannot pick up another first down.
00:25:14San Diego trailing 3-0.
00:25:16Flutie throw.
00:25:17Incomplete.
00:25:18Graham made a diving attempt.
00:25:22We talked to Jeff Graham about Doug Flutie.
00:25:24He said, hey, the ball is there.
00:25:25You turn around, the ball is there.
00:25:26You don't always see Doug throwing it.
00:25:28And Jeff Graham just loses his footing here and falls down.
00:25:31And that's why he's not able to get to the corner
00:25:33and be in position to make the reception.
00:25:35But you're right.
00:25:36He says, you know, you can't see where Doug is.
00:25:38But you have to find the ball while it's in flight.
00:25:41That's not an easy thing to do for receivers.
00:25:43It's very challenging when you play with a guy like Doug.
00:25:45He said, but Doug has perfect timing.
00:25:47On second and goal.
00:25:48Draw play.
00:25:49Tomlinson taking it to the outside.
00:25:51Diving for the goal line.
00:25:53The ball popped loose off the turf.
00:25:56And Tomlinson is down inside the one.
00:26:00We already showed you Tomlinson hitting it up inside
00:26:03underneath the tackles.
00:26:04But this one's going to come right at you.
00:26:06He'll press the hole.
00:26:07He goes vertical.
00:26:08Then he goes lateral.
00:26:09He bounces it outside.
00:26:11And that's just speed.
00:26:12Gets outside of Roman Pfeiffer.
00:26:13And he heads for the corner of the end zone.
00:26:15Not for the tackle of Lloyd Malloy.
00:26:17That would be a touchdown because it was very close.
00:26:20He was down, though, as he extended the ball.
00:26:23Now they've got to earn it on a third and goal.
00:26:25A tight formation.
00:26:27Chargers looking for the lead.
00:26:30On a gear.
00:26:31Tomlinson trying to cut it back.
00:26:33And no one to work with.
00:26:36Brian Cox read it perfectly.
00:26:38And the New England defense held Tomlinson to no gain.
00:26:42Among those 18 free agent players to join the Patriots, of course,
00:26:46is the veteran Brian Cox.
00:26:48Roman Pfeiffer does a good job of turning it back in to Cox.
00:26:51And Cox does a good job of filling the lane,
00:26:53giving Tomlinson nowhere to run.
00:26:55You can see off the defensive end, number 95, Roman Pfeiffer,
00:26:58getting up the field, turning it back inside to 51 Cox.
00:27:02That's the way you play team defense.
00:27:04A short field goal attempt for Wade Ritchie.
00:27:07From a 49er, 21 yards away.
00:27:10And Ritchie puts it through.
00:27:16We are tied at 3 as time has run out here at the end of the first quarter.
00:27:21Much more coming up.
00:27:28Prime Shopping.
00:27:30Red, blue, red, yellow, black.
00:27:33The house is full of stubborn dirt.
00:27:35Leave it to me.
00:27:37I'm a good cleaner.
00:27:39Look at this magic.
00:27:41It won't come off with a normal detergent.
00:27:44So I'll cut it as quickly as I need.
00:27:48I'll soak it in water.
00:27:50See?
00:27:51See?
00:27:52No scratches.
00:27:54Stubborn Chashim.
00:27:56I'll soak it in water and polish it.
00:27:59What do you think, Mr. Chashim?
00:28:02See?
00:28:03It won't come off with a normal detergent.
00:28:06It's easy to use.
00:28:08Soak it in water and polish it.
00:28:10See?
00:28:11Mr. Chashim is a high-tech sponge that doesn't need a detergent.
00:28:14It doesn't contain any chemicals or polishing agents.
00:28:17It's perfect for places where you don't want to use a detergent.
00:28:20It's clean, so it's fun to clean.
00:28:22Of course, it doesn't get scratched.
00:28:24So use it for defense.
00:28:26Mr. Chashim is a good cleaner.
00:28:28The secret is this.
00:28:29Mr. Chashim's super-fine fiber, 1 in 10,000 of his hair.
00:28:33This fiber removes the particles of dirt well.
00:28:36Don't be surprised.
00:28:38You can do this, too.
00:28:40There's more.
00:28:41This bathtub is for the bath.
00:28:43The bathtub is, of course, a wall of water.
00:28:45It's easy to clean high places, too.
00:28:47It's all done with water.
00:28:48Mr. Chashim is fun and clean.
00:28:50Yes.
00:28:51When you use it, it shrinks and becomes smaller,
00:28:53but it doesn't change the power to remove dirt.
00:28:55Please take a look.
00:28:56It's economical because you can use it until the end.
00:28:59There are six special items in the set.
00:29:02One for the bath.
00:29:04Six spare sponges for the bath.
00:29:06A set of 13 items.
00:29:085,800 yen.
00:29:09It's 5,800 yen, and it's shiny all over the house.
00:29:12The application will be free right now.
00:29:15Please call 0120-539-639.
00:29:19Please pay in cash.
00:29:20Please pay in cash.
00:29:22You can pay in cash.
00:29:24The bath area is free of charge.
00:29:52Inside the Cleveland six-yard line three times.
00:29:55They only had one touchdown to show for it.
00:29:57At that time, they had the short field.
00:29:59Only had to go 50 yards to get a field goal
00:30:01because of a play by a Patriot punter, Lee Johnson.
00:30:04So you have to take advantage of those opportunities,
00:30:06but if you're the Patriots, you have to really be happy
00:30:09with your defensive unit
00:30:10and keeping San Diego out of the end zone.
00:30:12San Diego has never won in six trips here to Foxburg.
00:30:16Kevin Faulk on the return.
00:30:18Short kick from Ritchie.
00:30:19Faulk's got a layup.
00:30:21He's brought down from behind
00:30:22in the 34-yard line by Derek Harris.
00:30:25Flag on the play.
00:30:2724-yard return for Kevin Faulk.
00:30:32San Diego has been penalized twice so far.
00:30:35New England just once.
00:30:36During return.
00:30:37Holding.
00:30:38Receiving team.
00:30:39Number 53.
00:30:41Ten-yard penalty.
00:30:42First down.
00:30:47Tom Brady gets another crack at this San Diego defense.
00:30:50Early second quarter action continues in a moment.
00:31:05All tied up.
00:31:06Three and three at the 14.52 mark of the second quarter.
00:31:09San Diego and New England.
00:31:11Patriots with a first and ten from their own 12-yard line.
00:31:14Rod Rutledge, the motion man,
00:31:16makes the handoff.
00:31:17Here's Brady to throw it.
00:31:19Airing it out.
00:31:20Brady on a deep ball.
00:31:22And dropped.
00:31:23David Patton had it on his fingertips in double coverage.
00:31:28Molden and Harrison.
00:31:30Strike for strike.
00:31:31We said that the receivers have to really come out
00:31:33and help a young quarterback like Tom Brady.
00:31:35When you have a chance to catch the football,
00:31:37you have to come down with it.
00:31:38This is an excellent throw.
00:31:40Patton, you can see it right off the fingertips,
00:31:43but excellent throw by Tom Brady.
00:31:45Launching that ball up the field.
00:31:47Patton has to make those catches.
00:31:49He's the third receiver in this offense,
00:31:51and you're going to double the outside guys.
00:31:53Patton's going to be in one-on-one coverage.
00:31:55Has to make the play.
00:31:56And he's been the starter because of Terry Burns' absence.
00:31:59Patton has been a go-to guy.
00:32:02Brady, quick drop and a quick throw
00:32:05over the head of Antoine Smith.
00:32:07Wasn't even looking towards the quarterback's direction.
00:32:11It sailed over his head.
00:32:12Well, Brady had to get rid of this ball
00:32:14because Junior Seau was just breathing right down the middle.
00:32:18He's coming smoking, but you see,
00:32:20Seau has a way of getting in there.
00:32:22Actually, this is not Seau.
00:32:23They bring a number of different guys,
00:32:25and this is Orlando Ruff, middle linebacker position,
00:32:28coming in, putting the heat on Tom Brady.
00:32:30Looks like Seau.
00:32:33Well, you start seeing Seau all over the place
00:32:35because of the lineup on the left, in the middle, on the right.
00:32:38Four-receiver look on a third and ten.
00:32:40Shotgun for Brady.
00:32:42Here comes the rush.
00:32:43Brady steps up.
00:32:44Brady under heat.
00:32:46Tried to unload it to the far side,
00:32:48but too low for Patrick Patts.
00:32:50Again, Ray Lee Johnson was grabbing at the jersey of Brady.
00:32:54Well, the charges have got pressure on Brady with regularity.
00:32:57The offensive line for the Patriots is going to have to sure up
00:33:00just a little bit here.
00:33:01You can see Ray Lee Johnson coming off.
00:33:03You've got even the running back, Antoine Smith,
00:33:05just chipping away, trying to help Matt Light.
00:33:08Matt Light has got to do a much better job than Ray Lee Johnson.
00:33:11He's beaten most of the first quarter here so far in the second quarter.
00:33:14Lee Johnson.
00:33:1630-yard punt on his first attempt.
00:33:19And this one does take a New England role.
00:33:21He's fortunate.
00:33:22Did not put it high in the air, and it rolls out of bounds
00:33:26as it crossed the 45-yard line of San Diego.
00:33:293-3.
00:33:30Chargers and Patriots.
00:33:32All not enough.
00:33:35He's a record-holder.
00:33:39He's a 17-year veteran.
00:33:41He's a little off today.
00:33:43He's off.
00:33:46Injuries continue to be a problem for this New England team.
00:33:49The talented weak side linebacker, Teddy Brewski,
00:33:51sitting this one out with a banged-up knee.
00:33:54Ted Johnson has stepped up into his spot.
00:33:56Johnson hasn't been 100% this year.
00:33:58McGinnis has been struggling with injuries.
00:34:00Obviously, we know about blood cell.
00:34:03Primetime players for New England.
00:34:04They have not been leading this team.
00:34:06Flutie on a first down.
00:34:08Up in the air.
00:34:09And complete.
00:34:10Tim Dwight, the third receiver for San Diego,
00:34:13finds a seam and then has some words following the play
00:34:16with Lawyer Malloy, 18 yards through the air.
00:34:21Now, for the best NFL info on the net, including expert analysis,

00:34:27or AOL keywords, CBS Sportsline.
00:34:31It'll be a first and ten for San Diego
00:34:33at the New England Patriot 39-yard line.
00:34:40Still early on in the second quarter, tied at three.
00:34:45Flutie in a three-receiver set.
00:34:47Flutie struggling.
00:34:48Flag down.
00:34:49Flutie on the move.
00:34:50Towering on the run.
00:34:51Out of bounds.
00:34:55Now you see North Turner in this San Diego Chargers offense
00:34:58out looking to take some shots deep against the Patriots.
00:35:02As an aggressive play caller came out working the run,
00:35:04and now they're starting to take some shots in the passing game.
00:35:07The rush was coming, and Tomlinson tried to deal with it.
00:35:10Offense.
00:35:11Number 21.
00:35:12Ten-yard penalty.
00:35:13First down.
00:35:14He held on to Mike Vrabel.
00:35:16Yeah, Vrabel was the guy coming through, applying the pressure.
00:35:19And we talked to Belichick.
00:35:21He says the way you defend Doug Flutie, you have to work the edges.
00:35:24What that means is he wants to contain Flutie.
00:35:26Don't let him get outside.
00:35:27And that time, Vrabel was coming from the outside and applying the pressure.
00:35:31So, he was able to get outside,
00:35:32but only because the Damian Tomlinson was holding on.
00:35:35Something Belichick has done in the past is put a spy on Flutie,
00:35:38where that is the lone objective for that one player.
00:35:42He wouldn't tip his hand, though,
00:35:43when we spoke with him a couple of days ago.
00:35:45Flutie.
00:35:47Sideline throw.
00:35:48It's complete.
00:35:49Jeff Graham able to haul it in at the 32-yard line.
00:35:53Otis Smith had the coverage on the near side.
00:35:56That's good for 16 yards.
00:35:58He's working against Otis Smith.
00:35:59He gets Smith to turn his hips, then breaks back toward the sideline.
00:36:02It's enough time for Flutie to get the ball there.
00:36:05Jeff Graham said that Flutie, his timing in his passing has been really well.
00:36:10And there you can see Graham comes out of the break,
00:36:12and the ball's right there ready for him to make the reception inbounds.
00:36:15Graham and Smith, former teammates with the New York Jets.
00:36:20Now a second and four.
00:36:22Freddie Jones, the tight end, the motion man.
00:36:25Another toss.
00:36:26Here's Tomlinson, turning it upfield and spun down as he crosses the 30.
00:36:31That's a three-yard gain.
00:36:32Otis Smith, first man there.
00:36:35Along with Richard Seymour, the rookie.
00:36:39Tomlinson does a good job of working behind his fullback, Fred McQuarrie.
00:36:43He just sees the kickout blocked by his fullback, and he hits it up inside.
00:36:46He doesn't hesitate.
00:36:47He sees a hole, and he's very aggressive in attacking the hole
00:36:50and pressing the line of scrimmage and gaining positive yards.
00:36:54As they continuously shuffle defensive players,
00:36:57McGinnis has checked in for Vrabel.
00:37:00And this is a third and one.
00:37:03Crowd urging on the defense.
00:37:05Tomlinson gets the call, puts the head down, and picks up the first down.
00:37:10Needed one, he got two, and they'll move the change.
00:37:14You can see Tomlinson's just a little frustrated,
00:37:16knowing that it's a big hole there.
00:37:18He keeps his feet, keeps his foot, excuse me,
00:37:21may even gain more yards on the play.
00:37:23But he's certainly really good, I think, with his vision
00:37:26in finding the soft spot in the defense and attacking the hole.
00:37:29A young runner, he runs with instincts, as he told us yesterday.
00:37:33They've been dealing with a lot of good running backs so far this season,
00:37:36New England and Romeo Grinnell, their defensive coordinator.
00:37:41And in three of the four games, they've given up 100 yards rushing,
00:37:44other than Edrin James.
00:37:45Trying to figure that one out.
00:37:47Flew in a quick toss over the middle.
00:37:49And Terrell Fletcher.
00:37:52Change of pace back.
00:37:53The shifty running back picks up nine on the pass and catch.
00:37:56Stevens and Long combine to make the stop.
00:37:59Let's head to New York right now.
00:38:00Jim Nance has another NFL Today update.
00:38:18If you give one guy in this league a chance to go against that Baltimore defense
00:38:21and find some cracks, Favre might be that guy.
00:38:24Such a strong arm.
00:38:25He only needs a seam to get the ball in there.
00:38:27On a second and one.
00:38:28Flutie, inside handoff.
00:38:30And Fred McCrary getting a rare carry up the middle for a gain of two.
00:38:35All the blocking I'm doing for Tomlinson, give me the ball,
00:38:38let me hear it every now and then.
00:38:40Gets his obligatory carry of the game,
00:38:43and now he'll go back to doing the dirty work and blocking for his tailback.
00:38:46Just his second carry of the season.
00:38:49McCrary, one of the long-term leaders on this San Diego team.
00:38:53Been with him since 1999, a former Saint and former Philadelphia Eagle.
00:39:00And LaDainian Tomlinson is fortunate to have a sturdy fullback in front of him.
00:39:05On a first and ten.
00:39:07Flutie, handoff.
00:39:09Tomlinson spinning.
00:39:11And Richard Seymour was able to get a paw on a three-yard gain
00:39:14off that move from Tomlinson.
00:39:16And San Diego just methodically moving the football now
00:39:19as they're inside the red zone at the 14-yard line.
00:39:26Defensive coordinator, Romeo Cornell, as well as the head coach, Bill Belichick,
00:39:31says we have to hold the charges to less than three yards a pop.
00:39:34And as you can see, the first down play here is a three-yard run by Tomlinson,
00:39:39so they're going to have to do a better job of shoring up the run
00:39:41and making the tackles a little bit sooner.
00:39:43Hopefully in the backfield.
00:39:45On a second and seven.
00:39:47Flags down.
00:39:48And this play never gets going.
00:39:51It's because they jumped the wide receiver, Jeff Graham.
00:39:55False start.
00:39:57Number 81, five-yard penalty.
00:40:00Second down.
00:40:01It is the veteran, Graham.
00:40:02Graham was a little anxious to get into his route.
00:40:05You know it's a pass play when the receivers are jumping.
00:40:08They're anxious to get into their route.
00:40:09They're not so anxious to run down the field and block.
00:40:12Not that they won't, not that they're not willing,
00:40:14but certainly a little bit more anxious to get into their route
00:40:16and try to make a big play in the pass.
00:40:18We asked Graham about adjusting to the new offense under Norv Turner.
00:40:21He said, hey, he didn't have to sell it to us.
00:40:24We know his resume.
00:40:25We knew the offense was going to be better.
00:40:27Well, this offense is a vertical stretch.
00:40:29It allows the receivers to get up the field and catch balls
00:40:33while they can run for more yards.
00:40:35So they're catching the balls at 10, 12 yards deep,
00:40:38not the deep and dump offense that we see maybe sometimes in the West Coast offense.
00:40:42Now a second and 12.
00:40:44Flutie wants to throw it.
00:40:45Flutie steps up to the end zone.
00:40:47Incomplete.
00:40:49In the vicinity, Curtis Conway.
00:40:53And Flutie skied that one too high.
00:40:57I think that's what you have to do as you're going into the red zone.
00:41:00You're at the 20-yard line.
00:41:01You have to take some shots deep while you still have some field left.
00:41:04But Matt Stephens comes over from the safety position.
00:41:07Flutie's looking to get the ball into Curtis Conway.
00:41:09That one sailed high.
00:41:11You know what, had it been any lower,
00:41:12I'm not sure if that ball would not have been intercepted.
00:41:14The free safety, Matt Stephens comes over and plays it very well.
00:41:17Very good defensive help in the end zone that Smith got from Stephens.
00:41:21You're right.
00:41:22And Flutie didn't have a choice.
00:41:26On a third and 12, the play clock was winding down and Flutie uses a timeout.
00:41:30He'll step aside at the 9-14 mark of the second quarter.
00:41:343-3, the Chargers and the Patriots all tied up.
00:41:39What do you think about this timeout?
00:41:45The San Diego Chargers have a chance.
00:41:48But it's a little…
00:41:55Off the San Diego timeout, Chargers face a third and 12 from the 19-yard line.
00:42:00Fletcher the lone setback.
00:42:03Flutie, deep drive.
00:42:06Flutie has the timeout, looking to run it, and no year to go.
00:42:10Gains a yard.
00:42:12He got back to the line of scrimmage and picked up one.
00:42:14Willie McGinnis made sure that Flutie was going down quickly.
00:42:18And San Diego has to settle for a field goal attempt.
00:42:20And that time Belichick does a good job of really, I think,
00:42:23designing the defense to stop Flutie.
00:42:25As you can see in the pass over six games,
00:42:27this is the number to really look at.
00:42:29Flutie only completing less than 59% of his passes against Belichick so far today.
00:42:33He's doing a little bit better.
00:42:35Six of nine at 75%, so he's learning, I think,
00:42:38to crack the code to build Belichick's defense so far here today.
00:42:4236-yard field goal attempt.
00:42:44But it will hold Wade Ritchie with the kick.
00:42:47No good.
00:42:51Wide to the left.
00:42:53And San Diego comes up empty.
00:42:55This game remains tied at 3-3.
00:42:59Second quarter actually continues in a moment.
00:43:03I wanted to score that one.
00:43:05I wanted to score that one.
00:43:07It's not a long field goal.
00:43:133-3, San Diego and New England all knotted up tonight on the CBS Sunday movie.
00:43:18They were TV's original survivors, but behind the scenes,
00:43:22Gilligan's Island was no paradise.
00:43:24Find out what went on when the cameras were off.
00:43:26Don't miss the world premiere movie, Surviving Gilligan's Island,
00:43:29tonight on CBS.
00:43:32I was more of a Marianne guy.
00:43:34I was more of a Ginger guy.
00:43:35I thought you were a Lovey guy.
00:43:37No, Ginger.
00:43:39You didn't like Lovey, Hal?
00:43:40Up the middle for a loss of one.
00:43:45John Perella makes the stop on Mark Edwards,
00:43:48and it will be second and 11 from the 26-yard line.
00:43:53Perella, one of the leaders on this defense,
00:43:55along with Junior Seau and Rodney Harrison,
00:43:57but need guys down in the trenches who can make plays.
00:44:00Perella is that guy.
00:44:01He was one of the guys that showed up at the press conference with Doug Flute.
00:44:04He came on board.
00:44:05He was one of the first guys to say, hey, we're happy to have you,
00:44:08and gave Doug a warm welcome to San Diego.
00:44:11Second and 11, Troy Brown is the motion man.
00:44:13Harrison now crowding the line of scrimmage.
00:44:15They'll throw it underneath, but David Patton creating after the catch
00:44:19and brought down from behind by Ryan McNeil.
00:44:22Patton got the step on McNeil and used the angle.
00:44:25Patton looking to make up for that pass that he dropped earlier,
00:44:28but this time he has sure hands,
00:44:31and he's able to make a move on McNeil after he makes the catch,
00:44:35and little stiff arm buys more time and more room to pick up the first half.
00:44:41Another move to change.
00:44:42Line of scrimmage is now the 37th.
00:44:44Clock is moving with 7.15 to go in the first half,
00:44:47a quick-moving first half here in Foxburg.
00:44:49Very quick-moving.
00:44:50That's because they're mixing in quick passes with the running game,
00:44:53and the defenses are playing really well also.
00:44:59San Diego with wins over Washington, Dallas, and Cincinnati.
00:45:02Those teams' combined record is 2-10 entering action.
00:45:07Here's Brady.
00:45:08Has the time.
00:45:09Brady comes in over the middle.
00:45:10Diving attempt, and Troy Brown could not haul it in.
00:45:14We talked about Tom Brady having problems with his accuracy early in the game.
00:45:19I think he's been doing a good job so far,
00:45:21but he has time to complete this pass, and I think it was just a little wobbly.
00:45:26I think the accuracy bug has jumped up the biting once again.
00:45:29Late flag was thrown.
00:45:31Defense, number 47, five-yard penalty.
00:45:35Automatic first.
00:45:37So off that late flag, hands to the face,
00:45:39called on the ninth-year veteran Ryan McNeil,
00:45:43who was the AFC's Defensive Player of the Month in September.
00:45:48Leads the NFL with five picks.
00:45:50He's always been very productive.
00:45:53Had nine interceptions in a stint with the St. Louis Rams,
00:45:56so he can pick off the ball, and he knows how to cover in the National Football League.
00:46:00First and ten now from the 42.
00:46:03Brady on the rollout.
00:46:05Little touch pass, and knocked away.
00:46:09Alex Molden with a stick on Antoine Smith,
00:46:13and Smith is fortunate he didn't have complete possession of that ball
00:46:17and would have been free.
00:46:18Hopefully Alex Molden does a good job of reading the screen on this play.
00:46:21He's playing the ball, and that's how you do it.
00:46:23You go through the man to the ball.
00:46:25Good things are going to happen.
00:46:27Not only does he almost come up with the interception,
00:46:29but he's able to break up the pass.
00:46:31Very violent collision.
00:46:32Alex Molden coming in, a very physical sin, taking on a big back.
00:46:36But here you see he's playing through the man, going right to the ball,
00:46:39and almost takes it right out of the hands of Antoine Smith.
00:46:42In fact, he had it for a minute.
00:46:43He sure did.
00:46:45Second and ten now from the 42.
00:46:49Chargers showing blitz.
00:46:51Brady does have the protection.
00:46:52Brady steps up and throws.
00:46:55Good blitz.
00:46:56Terry Glenn in the San Diego territory and down at the 41-yard line.
00:47:01Patriots do a good job of picking up the blitz
00:47:03with Junior Seau coming up the middle.
00:47:05And Tom Brady's very poised.
00:47:07That means Terry Glenn's going to be in one-on-one coverage against Alex Molden,
00:47:11and he breaks out of it.
00:47:12But the timing of the pass is really crucial.
00:47:14You see him picking up the blitz.
00:47:15Great job by the offensive line of the Patriots.
00:47:17And Brady steps up in the pocket,
00:47:19delivers the ball accurately to his receiver, Terry Glenn,
00:47:22drawing one-on-one coverage.
00:47:23Terry Glenn, Pro Bowl talent.
00:47:25That has never been questioned.
00:47:27Still one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the National Football League.
00:47:32And he's been in sync so far.
00:47:34Brady misdirection, and Edwards fell down.
00:47:38The play appeared to be going right,
00:47:40and then Brady threw left.
00:47:42Edwards in one-on-one coverage.
00:47:43Yeah, he just sort of rolls a half roll to his right
00:47:46because he knows the ball's coming back left to his fullback
00:47:49working against the tight end.
00:47:51And Mark Edwards is a fine receiving fullback out of the backfield.
00:47:54Having played with the San Francisco 49ers, used to catching the ball.
00:47:57He's a fine blocker also.
00:47:59I think the ball was a little overthrown.
00:48:01Mark Edwards trying to get back to the football and slipped
00:48:04and could not maintain his footing.
00:48:06Mark did have a fumbling problem last year with the Cleveland Browns.
00:48:09It hasn't been a huge issue this year with New England.
00:48:11Five receivers set.
00:48:13That's a movement.
00:48:15Brady steps up and throws it.
00:48:17Far side play.
00:48:19Lunging forward, he loses his helmet.
00:48:22And was unable to get to the marker.
00:48:24It's a nine-yard game.
00:48:27Excellent tackle by Ryan McNeil because Terry Glenn had a step on him.
00:48:31He was able to get open and made the reception.
00:48:34But Ryan McNeil does a good job of keeping him from reaching the sticks
00:48:37and getting the first down.
00:48:38And you can see he's got room there.
00:48:40But McNeil just squares up, makes a fine tackle,
00:48:43and now it's going to be third and short.
00:48:45But Glenn has been very effective here early in the ballgame,
00:48:48and this is something that the Patriots have not had in their first four games
00:48:51this season as well.
00:48:53I think multiple targets in terms of people to get the ball to.
00:48:56Ryan Cox has lined up as a fullback.
00:48:59Brady throws.
00:49:00It's Cox making the catch.
00:49:03And right down to the 22-yard line.
00:49:10He went a little trickery.
00:49:11I don't think Shady Eagle prepared for that.
00:49:13Charlie Weiss.
00:49:15And Bill Belichick, they put the defensive player,
00:49:18Brian Cox, in the backfield.
00:49:20And I don't know why the San Diego Chargers defense doesn't smell a rat here.
00:49:23You know he's not going to block.
00:49:25He's going to do something.
00:49:26You have to keep an eye on him.
00:49:27But he slips out into the flat, Tom.
00:49:29Brady gets him the ball.
00:49:30How about that?
00:49:31A linebacker making a nice catch.
00:49:34And then picking up the first down.
00:49:36On an inside handoff for Antoine Smith, and he picks up two yards.
00:49:40New England fans, it might be new to them, but with the Jets,
00:49:43we did see Charlie Weiss, as the offensive coordinator,
00:49:47use Brian Cox in certain situations coming out of the backfield.
00:49:50And that's something you have to be aware of going into a game.
00:49:53You know certain coaches like to do certain things,
00:49:56and they know players well.
00:49:57Of course, Brian Cox was over with the New York Jets,
00:49:59comes over to the Patriots,
00:50:01and he's one of the many Jets guys that have come over to play for this football team.
00:50:05One of five, Roman Pfeiffer and Anthony Pleasant, Otis Smith,
00:50:09as well as Bobby Hamilton.
00:50:10So these guys know this defense really well.
00:50:13But you know what?
00:50:14When you get Brian Cox making plays on the offensive side of the ball,
00:50:16that's something special.
00:50:18Second and eight now.
00:50:19Kevin Faulk came in initially in the backfield,
00:50:21now sets up as a receiver top of your screen.
00:50:25And a timeout call.
00:50:27San Diego takes the timeout.
00:50:29They use their second, only one remaining until halftime.
00:50:32We're tied at three with 4.01 to go in the second quarter.
00:50:46And a second and eight for the Patriots.
00:50:48Five-receiver look.
00:50:49Line of scrimmage is the 21.
00:50:52Again crowding the line, San Diego.
00:50:54Now they back off.
00:50:56Look at the time he has.
00:50:58To the end zone.
00:50:59Touchdown.
00:51:01Terry Glynn.
00:51:10A 21-yard scoring strike.
00:51:12Does he help this offense?
00:51:14You answer the question.
00:51:15He absolutely does because he has double coverage here.
00:51:19Now Ryan McNeil and the safety, Rogers Beckett,
00:51:22they're covering Terry Glynn over in the corner of the end zone.
00:51:25He gets under the quarterback,
00:51:27and Tom Brady has the poise to drill it in there.
00:51:30So, Tom Brady came in believing in Terry Glynn,
00:51:33and Glynn has answered.
00:51:39Extra point attempt from Adams and to Terry.
00:51:43And it's no good.
00:51:44His kick is no good.
00:51:46So, the New England Patriots put six on the board instead of seven.
00:51:52But they have to be pleased with the production
00:51:55that Terry Glynn has given them so far here in the ballgame.
00:51:58He's drawing double coverage, and he's winning.
00:52:01Junior Seau fakes the blitz, and Brady's very poised in the pocket.
00:52:04He's looking all the way at Terry Glynn.
00:52:06That's his guy to go to, but you can see he gets under the coverage
00:52:09and beats Ryan McNeil over in the corner.
00:52:12Here's Glynn.
00:52:13He's working to the corner of that end zone.
00:52:15And McNeil has good position,
00:52:16but Glynn does a good job of shielding him off
00:52:19and creating room for Tom Brady to squeeze that ball in there.
00:52:23You have to give the veteran credit.
00:52:25Terry Glynn missed two months absent from practice, training camp,
00:52:29and missed the first four games of the season.
00:52:32He comes out, and he's very productive.
00:52:34First NFL touchdown pass for Tom Brady, and now the downside.
00:52:39Adam Ventari on the extra point.
00:52:43I think that ball's blocked.
00:52:44They got a piece.
00:52:45It looked like Ed Ellis.
00:52:46Absolutely.
00:52:47The ball came up clean and very accurately.
00:52:50It came up real straight.
00:52:52And then someone from the San Diego Chargers defense
00:52:55appeared to deflect that ball and get a hand on it.
00:52:58It appeared to be 69 Ed Ellis that did deflect it a bit.
00:53:03You know, instead of the 10-3 advantage, it's 9-3 New England.
00:53:08The coaches told us, we asked, how much is Terry Glynn going to play?
00:53:11He said, you know what,
00:53:12it depends on how many big plays he can make early in the ballgame.
00:53:16Kick, Ronnie Jenkins from the five.
00:53:18Jenkins middle of the field.
00:53:20Jenkins crossing the 30.
00:53:22And brought down to the 33-yard line.
00:53:2528-yard return, and Terrence Shaw able to bring him down.
00:53:31Coming up next, doubleheader action continues.
00:53:33Jay Fiedler leads the Dolphins against Curtis Martin and the Jets,
00:53:37or Brian Greasy and the Broncos take on Trent Dilfer and the Seattle Seahawks.
00:53:42That's coming up next, second half of the doubleheader.
00:53:45Doubleheader action here on CBS.
00:53:48First and 10 from the 33 for the San Diego Chargers,
00:53:51now trailing New England 9-3.
00:53:53Chargers hoping to improve to 4-1.
00:53:56This is a crossroads game for New England.
00:53:58Getting to the backfield, firing through.
00:54:01It's Lawyer Malloy.
00:54:02Tomlinson got spun down for a loss of three.
00:54:05This is how Lawyer Malloy wants to play football.
00:54:07He told us, he said, I want to be one of the eighth men in the box.
00:54:11I need to be right at the point of attack.
00:54:14He plays best.
00:54:15And he'll come right up.
00:54:16He likes playing in this box where he can make his plays.
00:54:19He knows Tomlinson only has one hole to go through,
00:54:21and he closes in fast before Tomlinson can get going.
00:54:24That's what Lawyer Malloy is used to.
00:54:26Wants to do more of that instead of playing back on the hash marks in the past.
00:54:29Two of the best safeties in football on display here today
00:54:32with Malloy and Harrison crowding the line.
00:54:35Quick throw and Tim Dwight.
00:54:37He can explode.
00:54:39Dwight crossing into New England territory.
00:54:41So after a big play defensively from Malloy and the Patriots,
00:54:45they give up a 25-yard hookup.
00:54:48And North Turner, he's going to challenge this defense.
00:54:50He's going to be very aggressive in the play calling.
00:54:52This is just a quick slant.
00:54:56And he just makes plays right here.
00:54:58That's Tim Dwight.
00:54:59He's just really, I think, eluding the tacklers.
00:55:01He's very quick, and he's very small, 5'9", 180.
00:55:04He's very tough to get a hand on him,
00:55:06but he's very quick at making tacklers miss.
00:55:09Very courageous, I think, going in the heart of that defense
00:55:11and catching the ball on the slack.
00:55:13Former track star at Iowa is with the Atlanta Falcons.
00:55:16Involved in that deal with Michael Hook.
00:55:18Flutie in some trouble.
00:55:20Here's Flutie finding an opening and finding an open man.
00:55:23LaGanian Tomlinson turns it upfield.
00:55:26LaGanian's in a huge rut as Tomlinson is able to hurdle the New England bench.
00:55:31Turns into a four-yard gain,
00:55:33and that's all Flutie being chased by Richard Seymour.
00:55:36And the fans are a little divided.
00:55:38They want to applaud Flutie for doing his thing here.
00:55:41This is what he does best.
00:55:42He gets outside, and you know what?
00:55:44He buys time.
00:55:45He's able to make Richard Seymour miss on that play,
00:55:49and he spins back and finds an open guy.
00:55:51But the magic of Doug Flutie is still there,
00:55:53and Tomlinson gives him a target,
00:55:55and he's able to advance the ball up the field
00:55:57and create a positive situation for the San Diego Chargers.
00:56:01Doug Flutie, 12-1 record as a starter all time in this stadium
00:56:05going back to his college days at B.C.
00:56:08His team, though, trails New England 9-3
00:56:11as we hit the two-minute warning here in the second quarter.

00:57:189-3, New England lead coming up,
00:57:20Nextel Halftime Report,
00:57:21Jim, Mike, Randy, and Jerry have all the scores, highlights,
00:57:24latest NFL news, plus a CBS News update,
00:57:27America on Guard.
00:57:28That's coming up on the Nextel Halftime Report.
00:57:32On a second and six now from the 41.
00:57:37Terrell Fletcher in the backfield,
00:57:38fluting on a quick throw.
00:57:40Slant play, Jeff Graham.
00:57:42And it works to perfection for a first down.
00:57:45Terrell Buckley had the coverage,
00:57:4614 yards through the air.
00:57:48And normally the Patriots defense does a good job of adjusting.
00:57:51They've yet to make any adjustments
00:57:53to San Diego Chargers' passing game.
00:57:55They've constantly thrown the ball on these slant plays,
00:57:58going over to Tim DeWitt, to Jeff Graham,
00:58:00and Curtis Conway.
00:58:02They've all caught some slant plays,
00:58:04and I don't think the Patriots have done anything to adjust to.
00:58:06They're going to have to get safeties coming over the top
00:58:09and try to get them in that scene
00:58:10where they're hitting the play.
00:58:11Well, Flutie turns 39 later this month,
00:58:15and another completion for Flutie.
00:58:17James Warren is getting involved in the offense,
00:58:1911 yards, and they'll move the chains again
00:58:22down to a minute 14 and counting left in the first half.
00:58:25And that time, Tim DeWitt was working against a safety
00:58:28to Bucky Jones.
00:58:29And Flutie loves this.
00:58:30If you're not going to put pressure on him,
00:58:32he's able to drop back, three-step drop,
00:58:34get rid of the ball, and find his guys underneath.
00:58:36We hit one minute to play in the second quarter.
00:58:38A first and 10 at the 16-yard line.
00:58:40San Diego is driving.
00:58:43Flutie misdirection.
00:58:44Throwing.
00:58:45Incomplete.
00:58:47He threw it to the sideline,
00:58:49and Anthony Pleasant was applying some pressure.
00:58:52What was in the area?
00:58:53Yeah, Pleasant did a good job of trying to contain Doug Flutie
00:58:56because this was a sprint out from the word go,
00:58:59and that's the pressure by Pleasant, I think,
00:59:01that allows this ball to go out of bounds,
00:59:03and Doug Flutie was not able to deliver the ball on time
00:59:06accurately to Tim DeWitt.
00:59:10Doug Flutie did play parts of three seasons
00:59:13as a member of the New England Patriots.
00:59:16Came here as a member of the Buffalo Bills as well.
00:59:2151 seconds left, first half, on a second and 10.
00:59:25Flutie steps up.
00:59:26Sidearm toss.
00:59:27Freddie Jones, the tight end,
00:59:29finally gets a catch on the board.
00:59:31And a 7-yard gain.
00:59:32Timeout.
00:59:33San Diego, that's their final timeout of the first half.
00:59:37We'll return to Foxboro in a 9-3 game after this.
00:59:43San Diego used up all of their timeouts.
00:59:46Yes, they did.
00:59:47They used up the first half.
00:59:48So the inbound pass was a spike.
00:59:51Yes.
01:00:12A number of players on slack plays here.
01:00:14Down in the red zone, third down.
01:00:16Be careful of the quarterback draw,
01:00:18something he's very adept at doing
01:00:19in this part of the football field.
01:00:21On a third and three, he sends Fletcher in motion.
01:00:23Spread the field.
01:00:24Here's Flutie.
01:00:26Flutie.
01:00:29Improvising.
01:00:31Flutie still has the time.
01:00:33Sets his feet in play.
01:00:35Knocked away.
01:00:37To Bucky Jones.
01:00:40Able to get in and find the angle.
01:00:42He might have been able to bring that one in for the pick.
01:00:45And you might wonder,
01:00:46why does he have so much time to throw the football?
01:00:48They're only rushing four guys on this play.
01:00:51And really, McGinnis is just a spy.
01:00:53So it's really a three-man rush.
01:00:54And they're doing their best to try to contain Doug Flutie,
01:00:58not necessarily get the sack,
01:00:59but try to keep him in the pocket.
01:01:01To Bucky Jones.
01:01:02Should have had the interception.
01:01:03Drops it right in the end zone.
01:01:04He had 10 seconds to work with after the snap of the football.
01:01:0827-yard attempt.
01:01:10And Wade Ritchie drills it.
01:01:14San Diego cuts into the New England lead.
01:01:16It's now 9-6, Patriots.
01:01:1829 seconds to play in the first half.
01:01:20Doug Flutie has only been sacked five times so far this season.
01:01:24You wonder why he has a low occurrence of sacks.
01:01:26And that's because teams come in, game-planning,
01:01:29saying all we want to do is contain him.
01:01:31Actually, we want to keep him in the pocket.
01:01:33He's only 5'9", in stature.
01:01:35So teams believe that if you get a push up the middle,
01:01:37get your hands up,
01:01:38then you can, I think, disrupt his vision
01:01:41and force him to throw the ball from the pocket.
01:01:43So that's why he doesn't get sacked much.
01:01:45Now, he's very mobile, and he can get out and buy extra time,
01:01:47as we saw in that play there.
01:01:49But teams are content to really just, I think,
01:01:51keep him in the pocket and force him to throw the football.
01:01:54But he's been very productive here in the state of Massachusetts,
01:01:57high school, college, and pro with the New England Patriots.
01:02:00Yeah, Doug Flutie told us during their walkthrough yesterday,
01:02:03San Diego came in early, flying west to east.
01:02:06They walked through at Dedham High School here in Massachusetts,
01:02:10and everybody on the charge was saying,
01:02:12what are we doing here?
01:02:13We're in a high school field, the track surrounding it.
01:02:16Flutie loved it.
01:02:17It brought back memories going in with Natick High School,
01:02:19winning games against Dedham.
01:02:21And Flutie said he was having the time of his life
01:02:23just reliving some of those past visuals in his head.
01:02:26And even today, when I walk onto a high school football field,
01:02:29it brings back a lot of memories.
01:02:31It brings back the innocence of the game
01:02:33and a time that was very, I think, very special for many football players.
01:02:37San Diego to kick it off following the field goal.
01:02:409-6, Patriots leading it.
01:02:42This is from the 5-yard line.
01:02:45Patrick Pass trying to circle toward the near side as he crossed the 20.
01:02:50And John Holisen with a stop.
01:02:5318-yard return.
01:02:55This was pregame.
01:02:56Doug Flutie talked about the 50 tickets that he gave out.
01:02:59It probably could have been 50,000, as Solomon mentioned earlier.
01:03:03And pregame warm-ups, Flutie making his way,
01:03:05and they were ready to get the autographs from one of their own.
01:03:10Natick, Massachusetts native, Doug Flutie.
01:03:13He said that the fans are really torn when Flutie makes a play.
01:03:16They sort of want to applaud for him,
01:03:18but they realize it's a bad thing for their football team, the Patriots.
01:03:21But, you know, he has many fans here.
01:03:23He lives by very close to the stadium,
01:03:26and so he makes his home here during the offseason.
01:03:2924 seconds left.
01:03:31Here in the first half, Brady.
01:03:33Rifles it over the middle to Troy Brown.
01:03:35And now New England can start thinking about field goal position.
01:03:38They do have timeouts.
01:03:40A 23-yard hookup to the 45-yard line.
01:03:43They'll use one of those timeouts with 16 seconds left.
01:03:46First half.
01:03:50So, New England has a good field goal,
01:03:54so they want to end it with a 6-point lead.
01:03:56That's right.
01:04:009-6.
01:04:02Bill Belichick's team in front looking for more
01:04:05with 16 seconds to play in the second quarter.
01:04:08First and 10 for this New England offense.
01:04:11Brady steps up. Pocket collapsing.
01:04:13Brady, sideline, diving attack.
01:04:16He caught it. Terry Grant.
01:04:21What an effort by Grant on the near side to bring that one in cleanly.
01:04:25His hand has been productive throughout the first half.
01:04:28He's making plays, and all is forgiven.
01:04:30Much of the turmoil and controversy that has surrounded Terry Glenn
01:04:34since the beginning of the season going all the way back to training camp.
01:04:38I think all is forgiven when you come out and make six catches
01:04:41so far here in the first half, including a touchdown.
01:04:44Line of scrimmage is the 33, and they have 11 ticks on the clock left.
01:04:50Adams and Terry having an extra point scraped away.
01:04:53This would be a 10-16.
01:04:55That's a catch.
01:04:57San Diego wasn't expecting it up the middle,
01:04:59and they picked up valuable yardage.
01:05:01A timeout called with six seconds to go.
01:05:03They gain six straight up the gut.
01:05:07Pass with his first carry of the season,
01:05:10and New England has one timeout left.
01:05:12Adam Vinatieri coming onto the field to attempt a field goal.
01:05:20Vinatieri has converted on nine straight field goal attempts
01:05:24dating back to last season.
01:05:26Six seconds left, first half.
01:05:29Lee Johnson will hold it. Lonnie Paxton will snap it.
01:05:33And it'll be a 44-yard attempt for Vinatieri.
01:05:43We mentioned crossroads game for New England.
01:05:45They're 1-3, and they have three road games coming up in a row.
01:05:49Indianapolis, Denver, and Atlanta after this home game against San Diego.
01:05:5344-yard attempt.
01:05:55Vinatieri, the kick.
01:05:57No good.
01:06:01First miss of the season for Adam Vinatieri.
01:06:07And the Patriots have to go into the locker room with a 9-6 lead.
01:06:11It should have been more.
01:06:15As we hit halftime.
01:06:17Vinatieri does hit this ball very well.
01:06:19This one isn't blocked.
01:06:20He just pulls it a little bit to the left.
01:06:22Nevertheless, there's a golden opportunity for the Patriots to go in at halftime
01:06:27having put more points in the board.
01:06:29You know, points that they're going to need here in the second half
01:06:32to defeat the San Diego Chargers.
01:06:34And in the first half, Patriots lead at 9-6.
01:06:36Jim Nantz in New York.
01:06:38The next Dell Halftime Report is coming up
01:06:40after a word from your local station.
01:06:50We'll be right back.
