00:00A Time to Sing This is a carefully constructed passage.
00:05Take some time to see how it hangs together.
00:09Exodus 14 verses 30 and 31 match Exodus 15 verse 19.
00:14The former deal with divine salvation and Egypt's destruction, the latter with Egypt's
00:19destruction and Israel's salvation.
00:23They thus form a bracket-round Moses song.
00:26The song begins with victory past and ends with victories to come.
00:31In between are two passages focusing on the Lord's hand.
00:35In verses 6-10 we see the Lord's hand in the conquest of human foes.
00:39In verses 11-12 of supernatural foes, with the supremacy of the Lord among the gods.
00:46The bracketing verses then affirm the accomplished reality of our salvation.
00:50The song asserts that the victorious Lord who has acted in the past can be trusted for
00:54the future.
00:56The middle hand section stands for his ability and power to take action and to intervene.
01:02In verse 1 then is the adverb of time, it's that precise moment.
01:07Note it.
01:08The moment of accomplished salvation was the moment of song.
01:12This is the way singing is used throughout the Bible.
01:15It is our joyful response to a salvation to which we have contributed nothing.
01:21God has so completely undertaken the work of salvation, nothing is left for us but to
01:25rejoice in it.
01:27When the Bible speaks of other gods it is not affirming their existence but recognizing
01:31the fact that the nations have objects of worship other than Yahweh and often, as here.
01:38That is a matter of comparison.
01:39Yahweh is incomparably different and superior to them.
01:44This point is important, for we become like the God we worship.
01:49Moreover God's mighty acts are our persuasive testimony to the world.
01:54What he has done convinces them.
01:57So in verse 14 the people hear and fear.
02:00Are we often fearful to offer testimony in case we will be asked questions we can't answer?
02:06We must learn to rely on God's truth to bring its own conviction.
02:11Reflection Reflect on Exodus 15 verses 13 and 17.
02:16The Lord God is our redeemer, our loving next of kin, who has finished the whole work of
02:21salvation.
02:23Pray that he will keep you on the path, day by day, to his holy habitation.
