00:00Good morning from Pag-asa Weather Forecasting Center.
00:03This is our update on the storm that we are monitoring
00:06inside our Philippine Area of Responsibility.
00:09Earlier this morning at 4am,
00:11the center of Hurricane Karina was last seen
00:15at a distance of 490 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora.
00:19This is still a tropical storm and it is a strong storm
00:22with strong winds that are close to the center
00:25that can reach up to 75 kilometers per hour
00:28and a strong storm that can reach up to 90 kilometers per hour.
00:32Karina continues to move west-northwestward
00:35at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour.
00:38And as of now, we can see here in our satellite images,
00:42this storm that is affecting our country
00:45is the movement of the southwest monsoon,
00:47the strong wind that is being carried by Hurricane Karina.
00:51That is why today, we can experience a cloudy sky
00:53with heavy rains, floods, and landslides
00:56in the western sections of Luzon and Visayas,
00:59particularly here in Antique, Northern Palawan,
01:03Occidental Mindoro, Zambales, Bataan,
01:06and in the province of Pangasinan and La Union.
01:11We are hoping for a brighter future
01:13for the vast majority of our country,
01:14as well as Metro Manila.
01:16For now, let's prepare for the chances of a sudden
01:19and rapid downpour, followed by localized thunderstorms.
01:24Here in our satellite images,
01:25this sea tropical depression that used to be in Butchoy
01:29is now here as well.
01:30It is still outside of our PR
01:33and there is no direct effect on any part of our country.
01:38And this will be the track and intensity forecast
01:41of Hurricane Karina.
01:42We are hoping for the continuation of the northwestward
01:45movement of the storm.
01:47And 24 hours from now,
01:49so in the early hours of Monday,
01:52the location of Hurricane Karina is 420 kilometers
01:55east of Tuguegarao City in Cagayan.
01:58Afterwards, the northward or north-northwestward
02:02movement of Hurricane Karina will continue.
02:04On Tuesday,
02:05the location of Hurricane Karina is 390 kilometers
02:09east of Calayan, Cagayan.
02:12This movement will continue
02:14towards the northern boundary
02:15of our Philippine Area of Responsibility.
02:18And by Wednesday,
02:20the location of Hurricane Karina is 365 kilometers
02:24east-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.
02:26And by Thursday early morning,
02:29it is possible that Hurricane Karina is already outside
02:30of our Philippine Area of Responsibility,
02:32595 kilometers north-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.
02:39And for the heavy rainfall that Hurricane Karina will bring,
02:44this is what we are hoping for.
02:50As early as tomorrow, July 22,
02:52we are hoping for 50 to 100 millimeters of rain.
02:56So this is the moderate to heavy rains
02:58in the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan
03:01and in the eastern portion of Babuyan Islands.
03:04So the rain that we can possibly experience
03:07will be stronger by Tuesday, July 23.
03:10100 to 200 millimeters,
03:12so this is the heavy to intense rain
03:14in the area of Batanes,
03:15while the moderate to heavy rains
03:17in the area of Babuyan Islands.
03:20And in addition to the rain that Hurricane Karina brought,
03:23we can also experience the rain
03:25brought by the southwest monsoon
03:27or a strong wind
03:28that will bring the so-called storm
03:30in the coming days.
03:32So this enhanced southwest monsoon
03:33is also possible to bring moderate to intense rain
03:37here in the western portion of Luzon
03:39in the coming days.
03:42And for the additional details
03:44of the rain brought by the storm
03:46for the next three days,
03:47as early as today,
03:48we can experience the rain
03:50brought by the storm
03:52brought by Hurricane Karina.
03:54These areas of Zambales,
03:56Bataan,
03:57Kalayan Islands today,
03:58we can experience moderate to heavy rains.
04:01The rain brought by the storm
04:03starting tomorrow, July 22,
04:05will be stronger in the areas
04:06where we can experience the rain.
04:08100 to 200 millimeter rains
04:10is what we can possibly experience.
04:11It's a heavy to intense rainfall
04:13in the areas of Occidental Mindoro,
04:15Zambales, Bataan, Benguet,
04:17Pangasinan, and the Union.
04:19Meanwhile, moderate to strong rains
04:22can be experienced in Abra,
04:24Cavite, Batangas,
04:26Northern Palawan,
04:28and in most parts of the Ilocos region.
04:31When Tuesday arrives,
04:33July 23,
04:34strong rains will continue
04:36brought by the storm.
04:37These rains will continue
04:39brought by Hurricane Karina
04:42in the southwest monsoon.
04:44Heavy to intense rains
04:45100 to 200 millimeters
04:47will continue in the areas of Occidental Mindoro,
04:49Zambales, Bataan,
04:51Benguet, Pangasinan,
04:53and the Union.
04:54We can also experience moderate to heavy rains
04:56in the areas of Metro Manila,
04:58Northern Palawan,
05:00Cavite, Batangas,
05:01and some areas of Central Luzon,
05:03in Tarlac, Pampanga,
05:05Bulacan, Abra,
05:07and in most parts of the Ilocos region.
05:11In the mentioned areas,
05:13the areas that will experience
05:14the direct rains of Hurricane Karina
05:17as well as the southwest monsoon
05:19or heavy to intense rains,
05:20we hope
05:21or continue to be prepared and alert
05:23to the dangers of floods and landslides
05:26especially if the rains will continue.
05:29It is also possible for our rivers to flood
05:32and bring floods.
05:33We hope that the chances of floods will be higher,
05:36especially if we are in elevated
05:39or mountainous areas.
05:42In severe winds,
05:44the strong winds brought by Hurricane Karina,
05:47as of now,
05:48there is no tropical cyclone wind signal
05:50in any part of our country
05:52because of the track.
05:54Or the track of Hurricane Karina
05:56is far from our rivers.
05:57But we do not remove the possibility
05:59that we will have a high wind signal,
06:01number one,
06:02in the extreme northern Luzon area
06:03and in the northeastern portion
06:05of mainland Cagayan,
06:07possibly by tonight or tomorrow
06:09in anticipation of the strong winds
06:12brought by Hurricane Karina.
06:14In addition to the strong winds
06:16brought by the typhoon,
06:17we expect that this southwest monsoon,
06:19the heavy to intense winds
06:21brought by Hurricane Karina,
06:23we expect that it is also possible
06:25for strong winds to blow
06:27in some parts of our country
06:28in the coming days.
06:30So starting tomorrow,
06:31July 20,
06:33starting tomorrow,
06:34we will experience strong winds
06:36brought by the southwest monsoon
06:38in the area of Kalayaan Islands.
06:40As of Monday,
06:42July 22,
06:43tomorrow,
06:44strong winds will continue
06:46in areas of Zambales,
06:47Bataan,
06:48Metro Manila,
06:49Calabarzon,
06:50Mimaropa,
06:51Bicol Region,
06:52and Western Visayas.
06:53And the day after that,
06:54on Tuesday, July 23,
06:56strong winds will continue
06:58brought by the southwest monsoon
07:00here in Ilocos Region,
07:02Zambales,
07:03Bataan,
07:04Aurora,
07:05Metro Manila,
07:06Calabarzon,
07:07Mimaropa,
07:08Bicol Region,
07:09and Western Visayas.
07:11And in terms of our ocean,
07:13at the moment,
07:14there are still no high gale warnings
07:16for our nearby islands.
07:18However,
07:19our fellow fishermen
07:20will still be careful,
07:22especially here in the western section of Luzon,
07:24in the seaboards of Visayas
07:26and Mindanao
07:27because it is still possible
07:28for us to experience
07:29strong winds
07:30up to the high seas
07:32brought by the winds
07:34of Carina
07:36and the southwest monsoon.
07:39And for more details
07:41on the truck
07:42and the intensity forecast
07:44of Tropical Storm Carina,
07:46we can see here
07:47in this truck image
07:49that starting today,
07:51the generally northwestward
07:53or the movement
07:55of Carina
07:56will continue
07:57until tomorrow.
07:59And after that,
08:00on Tuesday,
08:01Carina will move
08:03to the north.
08:04So generally northward
08:05is the movement
08:06of Tropical Storm Carina
08:07on Tuesday.
08:08We can see here
08:09in this truck image
08:10that this northward movement
08:12will continue
08:13towards the northern boundary
08:14of our Philippine Area
08:15of Responsibility.
08:16So it is possible
08:17for our PAR
08:18to leave
08:19by Wednesday,
08:20July 24.
08:21After that,
08:22while our PAR
08:23is outside
08:24and far away from our country,
08:26it will move
08:28towards the northern boundary.
08:29So it will move
08:30northwestward.
08:31It is possible
08:32for it to pass
08:33through the area
08:34of Singkaku Islands
08:35outside of our PAR.
08:37And we can also see here
08:39in this truck image
08:40that it is possible
08:41for the intensity
08:42or intensification
08:43of Tropical Storm Carina
08:44to continue.
08:45It is possible
08:46for it to meet
08:47the Severe Tropical Storm category
08:48by tomorrow.
08:49It will continue
08:50its rapid intensification.
08:52It is possible
08:53for it to meet
08:54the Typhoon category
08:55by Tuesday, July 23.
08:57So we are not removing
08:58the possibility
08:59of rapid intensification
09:01within the forecast period.
09:02So we can see here
09:03in the truck of Carina,
09:05it is far away
09:06from our country.
09:07So mainly offshore
09:08are the storms
09:09brought by the typhoon.
09:11But for now,
09:12as I mentioned earlier,
09:13it is possible for us
09:14to increase
09:15Tropical Cyclone
09:16Wind Signal No. 1
09:17as early as tonight
09:18or tomorrow
09:19here in the area
09:20of Extreme Northern Luzon
09:21and northeastern portion
09:22of Mainang, Cagayan.
09:23And we should also prepare
09:24for strong winds
09:25and storms
09:26brought by
09:27Southwest Monsoon.
09:28The strong winds
09:29and storms
09:30that are expected
09:31in the coming days.
09:32And for more information
09:33about the weather,
09:34especially in the rainfall
09:35or thunderstorm advisories
09:36that are possible
09:37to be issued
