00:00The Court of Appeal has imposed the death sentence on six former National Defence University
00:08students convicted of murdering Navy cadet Zulfahan Osman Zulkainain seven years ago.
00:16Justice Hadariyah Syed Ismail, who chaired the panel, said the death sentence was warranted
00:21given the cruelty of Akmal Zuhairi Asmal, Azamuddin Sofi, Najib Razi, Afif Najmuddin
00:28Azahat, Shobirin Sabri and Hakim Ali's actions. The court had earlier convicted the six men
00:35of murdering Zulfahan at UPNM's Jabhat Hostel on May 22, 2017. The High Court in 2021 tried
00:44the six for murder but reduced their charge to culpable homicide, not amounting to murder,
00:50and sentenced them to 18 years in prison. In May, the prosecution sought the death
00:55penalty for the six, accused as a deterrent to the community,
00:59and to emphasize the rejection of bullying and extreme abuse.
