00:23♪♪
00:29All right, back live in New York.
00:31I'm Brent Musburger, and Jane the Greek is over here screaming,
00:33they've got to put Kilmer in the game.
00:35But listen, what I want you to do right away is get even with that scoreboard for me.
00:38All right, let me try it again.
00:41We have Chicago and Tampa Bay.
00:43Tampa Bay leads 19-16.
00:45That's the seesaw game going for you out there.
00:47St. Louis seemed to fall apart in the second quarter,
00:50and the New York Jets now lead 23-10.
00:53And this game is very important because Dallas can pick up a full game on the Washington Redskins,
00:58the New York Giants 17, Washington 6.
01:02This one I don't believe.
01:04It looks like a baseball game.
01:05Buffalo leading 5 to Cincinnati's nothing.
01:08Speaking of not believing, folks, how about that one?
01:11The bet of the day.
01:12The Lions 31, San Diego 7 in the third quarter.
01:16Green Bay and Minnesota, tough defensive game in Bloomington.
01:19Tied at 7 in the second quarter.
01:21And there's the game you're watching at the half
01:23as Tony Dorsetti merges from the doghouse in the second quarter.
01:27Cleveland and Kansas City, and that is a surprise with Kansas City leading 10-3.
01:32And, Jane, how about the marathon?
01:33How'd that turn out?
01:34Well, Brent, more than 2 million people lined the streets earlier to watch the New York Marathon,
01:38and one of those who was waiting at the finish line was Jack Whitaker.
01:41And now let's go to Jack with the report.
01:44Welcome to Central Park in the city of New York on a beautiful autumn day
01:48and one of the greatest days this great city has ever seen.
01:51The ninth annual New York City Marathon is coming to an end.
01:54Bill Rogers about to win his third consecutive title in the women's division, a mystery lady.
01:59Number 1173 is leading at this point.
02:02We don't yet know her name.
02:04It all began at 10.30 this morning.
02:0711,142 men, women, and children started running on the Staten Island side of the Verrazano Bridge,
02:15an incredible sight on this warm autumn morning.
02:18Every state in the Union except South Dakota was represented
02:21as these runners attempted the 26 miles, 385 yards of the marathon distance
02:27through the five boroughs of the city of New York.
02:30Over 1,100 women are competing, 1,458 lawyers, doctors, and dentists.
02:36Seventy-one-year-old Walter Stack of San Francisco,
02:40nine-year-old Howard Brynen of Connecticut,
02:42runners from 28 countries, housewives, ballet dancers,
02:46and 4,800 people who have never run in a marathon before
02:49make up this joyous group who celebrate the biggest day that running,
02:54the sport of the 70s, has ever seen.
02:58We are looking down now at the finish line, the last 385 yards that they will run.
03:05As we told you, Bill Rogers, the defending champion, the record holder for this event,
03:09he took over the lead at the 8-mile mark along with Gary Bjorklund.
03:14Gary Bjorklund and he dueled until 15 miles,
03:17and now here he comes all by himself, an exotic and joyous Bill Rogers
03:23about to wrap up his third consecutive New York City Marathon title.
03:28And listen to this crowd.
03:43All right, here we are with the winner, Bill Rogers, his third straight,
03:46and you are Mr. New York right now.
03:48Oh, well, it's a pleasure to be that way, I'll tell you.
03:50It was very intense pace early in the race.
03:53Why was that, because of the great competition?
03:55Only one runner.
03:57Well, first Ian Thompson from England, and then Gary Bjorklund busted it wide open too early.
04:02And I knew that he was making a mistake. It was too early.
04:06And about 10 miles, he seemed to suddenly falter.
04:10That was from about 8 miles to 15 miles in that stretch, where you were right together?
04:14Yeah, right around 13 miles, 10, 12 miles.
04:17And we decided, we told each other we'd run with each other for a little while.
04:21But then I knew that it was either, you know, if it had been later on, I would have considered tying with him.
04:26But this way it looked like it might be risky to win, so I decided to go on ahead, you know.
04:29What you did was absolutely correct.
04:31Terrific, Bill. Congratulations.
04:33You are the hero of this country right now.
04:35I'll be back next year.
04:36Attaboy. Back to you now, Brent.
04:38All right, Jack, thank you very much.
04:40Anybody from the weaker sex finish yet?
04:41Well, you just said Rogers won.
04:43I asked for that. Who was the fastest woman today, all right?
04:47Greta Weiss was the fastest woman today, and she also set a record.
04:50She came in with a time of 2 hours, 32 minutes, and 12 seconds.
04:54And she had her very first try at running a marathon distance today.
04:58Isn't that amazing?
04:59Hey, listen, down in Dallas, Newhouse, the running back, was involved in that Monday night game a couple of weeks ago.
05:05We're going to show you some footage up at Station WBVM in Chicago, where Johnny Morris is.
05:09They did a very interesting thing.
05:10Look at Newhouse. He's the bottom setback.
05:12Do you see the mouthpiece dangling down?
05:15Well, they ran the tape of this game over and over and over again,
05:18and every time the mouthpiece was dangling down, Roger Staubach would throw the football.
05:23Now, here he is coming right at you.
05:24I know it is very difficult to see, but you see the mouthpiece is outside of the mouth at that point,
05:30and Roger went to the pass.
05:31Now, the next sequence, it's inside the mouth.
05:33They go to a running play.
05:34Irv, could the Redskins have been reading that?
05:36No question, Brent.
05:37No question, Brent.
05:38You know, players have all sorts of peculiar habits in running plays or going out as pass receivers.
05:43If he did that, it certainly would be a valid tip for the Redskins defense.
05:46Then, against St. Louis, Irv, they changed mouthpieces,
05:49and this one had to stay in permanently,
05:51so there was no chance for the Cardinals to read the plays off of what Robert Newhouse was doing.
05:55And the NFL today.
05:57We'll continue on CBS.
05:59We're going to take you around the league and show you some highlights.
06:02We've got some good games working this afternoon after these messages from your local stations.
06:10Dallas can indeed pick up a full game
06:13because the Washington Redskins are going to lose this afternoon to the New York Giants.
06:17That game is now in the fourth quarter.
06:19This is earlier action.
06:21Pisarczyk here, finding Robinson, who beat the Redskins secondary clean.
06:257-0 after the point.
06:27Now, watch Cotter here.
06:29Dip and then come up.
06:31And that giant offensive line is the most improved part of that team this year.
06:3531 yards to the Washington 35.
06:37Donella field goal, 10-0.
06:39Everybody's got the flea flicker.
06:41This one's going back to Pisarczyk,
06:43who goes downfield to James Thompson
06:46at the Skins' four-yard line.
06:49And Pisarczyk, this time faking inside,
06:52went to the outside where there was daylight.
06:5417-6 right now, and it is all Giants' serve.
06:58We've been taking a look at the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers game down in Tampa Bay.
07:02Tampa Bay leads that game by a score of 19-16.
07:05It's about ten minutes left to go in the fourth quarter.
07:07This is second-quarter action here.
07:09Young quarterback Doug Williams rolls to his right
07:11and hits Jim Obradovich on a nifty touchdown pass here.
07:14And Tampa took a 13-7 lead at this point.
07:16The Bears came back with a screen pass from Bob Avellini to Walter Payton.
07:20Of course, when Walter Payton has a football in his hands,
07:22he's just simply a work of art in action.
07:24Here he goes down inside the Tampa Bay 15-yard line
07:27with a scoring opportunity for the Bears.
07:28And there it is.
07:29Wilbur Harper goes in.
07:30And Chicago took a 16-13 lead.
07:33Tampa Bay came back with a nifty run here by Johnny Davis.
07:36It goes down to the seven-yard line,
07:37and Doug Williams takes it in on a quarterback sneak.
07:39And Tampa Bay leads 19-16 with 9.55 left to go in the game.
07:43Jimmy, in Bloomington, was that a field goal by Mike?
07:45No, that was a touchdown for Minnesota.
07:47Touchdown Minnesota, and the extra point is now good.
07:50So they have just gone ahead of Green Bay 14-7,
07:53just seconds left in the first half of that game.
07:56Right now, we're going to send you back
07:57to the most dedicated play-by-play man we've got today.
