00:12All right, let's take you around the league, update all the scores right now.
00:15The New York Giants and Atlanta, many of you watching that game,
00:18the Falcons ahead, tough defense this year.
00:20Philadelphia and Detroit, the rest of you watching that contest,
00:2210-7 at the half, the Lions ahead.
00:25New England and the New York Jets, very entertaining football game.
00:2817-14 Patriots ahead.
00:30Pittsburgh and Cleveland, how about those amazing Browns this year,
00:33tied at 14 at the half.
00:35Minnesota and Green Bay, the Packers struck first,
00:3895-yard touchdown pass, now they're tied at 7.
00:41New Orleans and Chicago, the Saints have just scored,
00:44they have just kicked the extra point, tied in Chicago's 7-all.
00:48Dallas and Tampa Bay, a Henderson interception for the Cowboys, makes it 10-0.
00:52Buffalo and Baltimore, what's wrong with the Colts' offense?
00:55That's a scoreless now in the first quarter.
00:57Irv, let's get started with those highlights and let's pick up now on Detroit.
01:01Okay, Detroit and the Philadelphia Eagles, of course, out of Pontiac Stadium.
01:04The Lions are leading that game by a score of 10-7,
01:06and of course defense has been the name of the game all day.
01:08But Ron Jaworski here gets started for the Eagles,
01:10third and 16 on his own 22-yard line.
01:13He goes up in the air, but the defense takes charge.
01:15It's Levi Johnson, number 23, picks the ball off at midfield,
01:18runs the ball back 32 yards, down to the Philadelphia 14,
01:22setting up a Dexter Buzzy touchdown.
01:23Here it is right here, handoff, 14 yards off his right tackle.
01:26Buzzy goes in, Detroit leads 7-0.
01:28Kudlowewski tries to come back, and they do.
01:30Right here, second and 10 on Detroit's 31-yard line.
01:33Jaworski goes at Krempley, 31-yard touchdown, passes all tied 7-7.
01:37Detroit later came back on the field goal and lead at halftime 10-7.
01:40Giants and Atlanta, Irv, and again we stress the importance of a kicking game
01:45in professional football.
01:47How many contests does that turn around?
01:49The Falcons got on the board because of this neat return
01:53coming up here by Lawrence.
01:54Last week for the Giants, it was Hammond who busted one against the Dallas
01:57Cowboys, bad ankle tackle right there.
02:00And Lawrence gets down to the Giants' 34-yard line.
02:03Scott Hunter, then in the second quarter, kept it,
02:06and he ran from the Falcons' 34 to the 1-inch line.
02:10Scott Hunter doing a good job filling in for Bartkowski this year.
02:14Now it'll be Ealy who will score the touchdown,
02:16and the extra point made it 7-0.
02:18Goldstein under pressure for the Giants.
02:20Here comes Lewis out after him as it's that Falcon defense that has
02:24improved this team this year.
02:26Goldstein's pass going to be batted down here by the guy they
02:29call Captain Crazy, Kiken Dawg.
02:31Goldstein's pass this time intercepted by Ray Brown.
02:34And so at the half, it is 7-0, Atlanta over the Giants.
02:38Green Bay, Minnesota, let me show you that 95-yard touchdown pass
02:43as it was thrown by Lynn Dickey to Steve Odom, and it put them ahead.
02:47Minnesota was then able to snap back after that.
02:50But it's a key play because the Vikings have had some problems this year.
02:53Here it is, Dickey now to Odom, who is loose, 95 yards.
02:58And then after the extra point, it was 7-0, the Packers ahead of the Vikes.
03:04But the Vikings rallied, and it was Fran Tarkenton who brought them back.
03:0817-yard touchdown pass, Sammy White.
03:12After the extra point, it was 7-7.
03:14The NFL today will continue on CBS.
03:20Fellas, we've also got the United States Grand Prix.
03:23That's right, Brent.
03:25We have a friend of ours down there right now
03:27because it's getting ready to start.
03:28CBS's Sports Spectacular will bring you coverage of that race next Saturday
03:32at 4.30 PM Eastern time.
03:34But right now, let's go to Ken Squire, who's
03:36trackside, for a preview look at that race.
03:38Kenny?
03:43It is the 30th anniversary of one of the premier races in the world.
03:47It is the 30th anniversary of one of the premier races in the world,
03:50the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, New York.
03:53I'm Ken Squire, and throughout the afternoon,
03:55we'll be updating you on the activity of this world championship
03:58race, in which car number 11, driven by Nicky Lauda,
04:03is expected to assume the world title still another time.
04:07Lauda is about to climb into this famous Ferrari car.
04:10One of his last rides for Ferrari, he changes to another team next year.
04:14And with this race, once again, the world champion.
04:18Lauda will not be racing so hard for first place as for the world title
04:22today, but for others, here in the rain,
04:25the story is going to be a race for first place.
04:28Mario Andretti will be seeking his fifth Grand Prix
04:31victory of the season for Team Lotus.
04:33Meanwhile, James Hunt is on the pole, his car, the McLaren,
04:38establishing a new record, breaking Lauda's old record in qualifying.
04:42And it will be James Hunt against the field.
04:44Mario Andretti is stashed back in fourth place.
04:47And between him and Hunt are the two Alfa Romeo automobiles.
04:51They'll be driven by one of the best drivers in the rain,
04:54and that's expected this afternoon, Hans Stuck,
04:56and also by the very fine John Watson.
05:00Moving out of the way here as Nicky Lauda
05:02moves out to take a practice lap before we settle down
05:05to this world championship race.
05:08The weather is cold.
05:09It is raining, and that will definitely be a factor.
05:12Whether to go with rain tires or the slick tires
05:15on this 3.4 asphalt course, that's a consideration
05:19that the team managers will have to make.
05:21And they'll have to make it shortly.
05:23The temperature has been dropping in the past two hours.
05:25Temperature not as much of a concern on this very undulating course
05:29as the water.
05:30Right at turn number two, the water, if it starts to rain hard, is a river.
05:35Recall a year ago in Japan, Nicky Lauda retired from the event
05:39and lost the world championship to James Hunt.
05:41He said he very well could pull out today.
05:43No one likes to run in the wet, but if there
05:46is a driver that can do it well in the wet, it is West Germany's Hans Stuck
05:50and from the United States of America, Mario Andretti.
05:54Ken, speaking of the wet, remember how Gale Sayers used
05:57to be able to run in the wet weather in Chicago?
05:59Well, now it is Walter Payton.
06:00I don't know how he would do on a wet surface,
06:02because today it is dry in Soldier Field.
06:05And he was able to score the first touchdown for the Bears.
06:08It came off a pass by Bob Avellini.
06:10Here he is rolling to the right side.
06:12Now watch him hit Payton.
06:14Off the scramble, he finally picks him up.
06:16It's a 30-yard score.
06:18After the extra point, it was 7-0 in favor of Chicago.
06:21Saints came back, picked an extra point, and now it is tied at 7.
06:26And here is Archie Manning.
06:30Archie can do it with the scramble, can't he?
06:33Middle opens up, and he's got the 6, and then it was the extra point,
06:36and it was tied at 7.
06:37And I am told that we've got some plays from the Dallas
06:40Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
06:43So let's take a look and see how the Cowboys are
06:45doing against the expansion team, still looking
06:47for their first victory in regular season competition.
06:50Here is Gary Huff quarterbacking the Buccaneers,
06:52picked off by Henderson, who comes back down the sideline.
06:56And the Cowboys took a lead after the extra point of 10-0,
07:01as they had kicked a field goal.
07:02And now I am told that they have also scored again.
07:05So it is 17-0.
07:07Irv, how about that pain machine today with Charlie Sanders?
07:09What's he done with the Lions so far?
07:11Well, you know, Chris, he caught a touchdown pass, which is nullified.
07:14But if people look very closely, you can see
07:15Lint off the field holding his hamstring muscle.
07:18Charlie does have one of his units on attached to his hamstring.
07:21And I just wonder whether or not it really is helping him.
07:24All right, Irv, and fellas, thank you very much.
07:26And the National Football League on CBS
07:27will continue right after this message.
