00:00Back live in New York, I'm Brent Musburger with Herb Cross.
00:05If you're a Giant fan, don't get carried away.
00:08About a year ago was the big turning point when the Cowboys discovered Drew Pearson.
00:11Of course, they had Roger Staubach, a quarterback, then if you look at the board, it's kind of
00:15fun, though, to see the Giants, who were averaging 13 points a Sunday, now lead the Cowboys 28-21
00:20a half.
00:21But a lot of football to go.
00:23That's right, the Bears over Washington.
00:25You think it's Sid Luckman taking it out on Sammy Baugh in the 40s again when you look
00:29at that score.
00:30How about Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay?
00:32Tampa had closed in, and then the Steelers got a double-ricochet touchdown to Lynn Swann.
00:38Gotta be good and lucky.
00:39San Francisco, shutting out Green Bay, 13-0, 22-yard pass to Berg Solomon, one-yard run
00:45by Linville Elliott.
00:46Cleveland and Baltimore, O'Brien Sipe, he's a dandy, 39 yards to Dave Logan, five-yard
00:52run by last year's Heisman Trophy winner, Charles White, and it's 14-0.
00:55Detroit and Minnesota slugging it out in the Midwest, no score in the second.
00:59Big surprise.
01:0017-3.
01:01Pat Telly has caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Jim Hart, so the Falcons could be in
01:06trouble.
01:07Irv, there are some marvelous players in some of the small schools around the country.
01:11Tell me once more why you come up with the gym.
01:13You know, Brent, a couple of weeks ago, we showed you likely Heisman Trophy candidates.
01:16Well, today, we're going to look at the great unknown, some of the best players you'd never
01:21heard of who are likely to go high in the NFL draft to clubs warmed by the thought that
01:26history repletes itself.
01:28Few NFL clubs took notice when this young man graduated from SMU in 1954, but when he
01:33retired from the NFL, everyone knew all about Raymond Berry.
01:37In 1961, the Los Angeles Rams drafted this prospect from obscurity in South Carolina.
01:42He soon was appointed the Secretary of Defense, David Deacon Jones, but perhaps the greatest
01:47success story involving an unknown player centered on this 1954 University of Louisville
01:52star.
01:53The prospect of finding another Johnny Unitas excites men like Gil Brand of the Dallas Cowboys.
01:58As a scout, there's a great deal of self-satisfaction when you can find players at smaller schools
02:06that go on to star.
02:08The stars are shining ever so brightly in the small college ranks this year, like Sam
02:12Green, wide receiver for the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.
02:16He's the owner of a great pair of hands, and he has that big play ability.
02:22He's a John Jefferson type of receiver, and this is what everybody's looking for in our
02:26wide open game today.
02:28There's no such thing as too many great running backs.
02:30At number 31, Clifford Chapman demands respect.
02:33He has rushed for better than 3,000 yards in his career at Central State University
02:37at Edmond, Oklahoma.
02:38The amazing thing about Clifford Chapman is he's almost 6'2", 225 pounds, and he holds
02:43the NAI record for the 100-meter dash in his area.
02:48On defense, remember the name of Don Washington at Texas A&I Safety.
02:53He's picked off 17 passes in his college career.
03:01He's big, he's fast, and he has a unique ability of being able to close on a receiver.
03:07He will be one of the first defensive backs taken in the country come May when the draft
03:12is held.
03:13But perhaps the first unknown to be drafted this year will be Portland State's record-setting
03:17quarterback.
03:21Neil Lomax undoubtedly will be the surprise of the draft.
03:27He is big, he's strong, he's smart, he's got mobility.
03:31He reminds me a lot of Roger Stalba.
03:34He has the ability to make a team a contender within a few years.
03:37He has great, great ability for a small college player.
03:41You know, Brent, Neil Lomax had quite a day yesterday, didn't he?
03:44Yeah, it was Portland State, 105, Delaware State, nothing.
03:50Lomax completed 16 passes, eight of them for touchdowns.
03:54He was indeed the only man in the country who had a better week than Ronald Reagan.
03:58We'll come back with the highlights as the NFL Today continues on CBS after these messages
04:02from your local stations.
04:06It's
04:07Had this many highlights on the Giants in two years.
04:09Would you believe what happened?
04:10They intercept Danny White four times.
04:13White had the Cowboys moving right off the topper, of course, and then Brad Van Pelt
04:18just stepped in there and picked this one off, and you have to believe this may have
04:21turned the game around.
04:22No, because White only threw nine interceptions coming into this game, and he's had trouble
04:25this afternoon.
04:26Then it was Phil Simms to Ernest Gray for the score.
04:29Oh, he's a deep threat in here, cradles that one in to put the Giants on the board.
04:34Tony Dorsett, around the left side for 11 yards and the touchdown, and it was deadlocked
04:39at seven.
04:40But then, another interception, this one by Mike Dennis.
04:42This one really hurt, because it set the Giants up in great scoring position, picked
04:46off around a 20-yard line, and, of course, New York's not finished.
04:49Who are these guys named Larry Here, or where did these people come from?
04:53Rookie out of Arizona, there he goes.
04:54Now, we all know where Tony Dorsett came from.
04:56Watch this run down to the giant one-yard line in the second quarter.
05:01What a big day, Brent.
05:02He carried the ball 11 times in the first half, gained 114 yards.
05:05This guy's got another 30 minutes to go yet, too, eh?
05:09Neuhausen banged in for the touchdown, then another interception, number 10 again, big
05:13Brad Van Pelt.
05:14You know, Roger Starbucks doing that game for the Cowboys for CBS.
05:19They'd rather have him on the field.
05:20Yes, sir.
05:21Tackle-eligible George Martin, the big defensive player, has got the lineman's green.
05:24Who is this Mike Freedy?
05:27I don't know where these people came from for the Giants, and I don't think the Cowboys
05:30do either.
05:31And Leon Perry for a touchdown.
05:34I'll bet you that Tom Landry's got the roster out right now trying to figure out who he's
05:37playing.
05:38Here's the replay.
05:39Screen up the middle to Springs.
05:40They caught the Giants in a full blitz, even though they had a three-man rush out there.
05:43They had linebackers coming.
05:45Cowboys caught them just right, and of course, Springs is sprinting to the end zone.
05:47What an explosion in Chicago, Irv.
05:49Here comes Walter Payton for a 51-yard TD.
05:52You know, Walter's gained about, he's averaged about 88, 89 yards a game this year.
05:57That one, of course, is his biggest, longest run of the year, I believe.
06:00How about Vince Evans on this touchdown pass?
06:01What about this young man at the quarterback?
06:03I kind of like him.
06:04He's a strong arm.
06:05He's perhaps the strongest quarterback in football.
06:06He threw the ball 13 times the first half, completed nine for 189 yards and three touchdowns.
06:11There's one of them.
06:12Joe Theismann made like Billy Kilmer, one difference.
06:14Hit the guys in the dark jerseys with this wobbler, and here comes Campbell down to the
06:18Washington three-yard line.
06:20Let's go away from Big Walter this time and give it to Roland Harper on a two-yard touchdown.
06:24Evans and Payton are not finished.
06:26Here comes a 54-yard touchdown to Sweetness, who in this game has doubled his touchdown
06:32output of the entire season.
06:35Now, Atlanta and the St. Louis Cardinals, and here's your man, Jim Hart, looking for
06:39Chris Cone, sir.
06:40Atlanta was concerned, of course, about Hart's passing ability.
06:42We know they have great young linebackers, but if anybody can find a weakness in a defense,
06:46Jim Hart can.
06:47Hey, here's a receiver that's small, slow.
06:50All he does is score.
06:51Pat Tilley.
06:52That's right.
06:53He's one of the leading receivers in the league right now, and the little guy squirts in for
06:55a touchdown.
06:56Now, we've got some highlights from Green Bay, San Francisco.
06:59I thought the Packers would give the 49ers all they wanted in Milwaukee, but it's the
07:02other way around.
07:03Jim Berg has replaced Montana as the starting quarterback for the 49ers.
07:08He sent Solomon zipping into the end zone.
07:10He laid up a beautiful pass, 20 yards for the score.
07:14Extra point was no good.
07:16Linville Elliott then barged in for the touchdown.
07:19And now, watch Solomon on this next sequence, sir.
07:24Great concentration.
07:25Isn't that unbelievable?
07:26And San Francisco banged in, and now they lead it by a score of 13-3.
07:32And let's send you back to Frank Leber right now.
