00:00And we're here at Essence Authors and we're going to be chatting with folks about what
00:04black authors mean to them and how black authors have impacted and influenced in their lives and
00:09our ode to black authors. So come with us as we walk around the convention center.
00:21One of my favorite like kind of black authors right now in this moment
00:25is S.A. Cosby. That's the kick I'm on right now.
00:27It would have to be Maya Angelou one because she represents black femininity,
00:32black power, black wellness. All of her work has empowered me to be the woman I am today.
00:37The book that I read for the first time was Russell Simmons' Do You.
00:40Slutty Vegan comes from Atlanta. I'm working on like changing my diet so I want to see what this
00:46is about. Kennedy Ryan, new favorite author. Forgot. How could I forget? Before I let go,
00:51I read this one already but perfect book. So my first book ever black author that I can recall
00:57and I probably should be reading this at a young age but was like Sister Soldier,
01:00the Coldest Winter Ever. Just finding like stories that related to me. Granted you know
01:04when you're reading a book you always have to like imagine the characters you're talking about
01:07but when they have like kinky hair, coily hair, they have skin that's brown like yours you know
01:12it's just like you imagine yourself in their characters. So thanks so much for joining us
01:16for Ode to Black Authors where we got to share a little bit about why it's so important to support
01:20black authors and how we're doing it with the Essence Authors stage right here right now in
01:25New Orleans. So enjoy your Essence Fest!
