Interrogations like this don't happen often where the suspect outsmarts the detectives and knows EXACTLY what to do... This is the case of Dababy, who is one of the people who got out of an interrogation better than he went in.

00:00I know if y'all had proof of me robbing somebody, we wouldn't even be talking, y'all would've
00:08cuffed me, I would be charged with it, that's what I know, bro.
00:12In January of 2020, DaBaby, aka Jonathan Kirk, was supposed to be playing a show at a nightclub
00:18in Miami, but when the owner paid him only 20 out of the $30,000 he owed him, things
00:24got out of hand fast.
00:26The victim alleged that Kirk punched him in the face multiple times before he was attacked
00:30by more of Kirk's crew.
00:32He was beaten up and knocked to the ground before being robbed for his phone, his credit
00:36card, and $80 cash.
00:38The only footage of the event was this piece of obscured CCTV footage.
00:43Kirk fled the scene in a black SUV before returning to the hotel a few hours later,
00:48only to be met by both of the victims and a team of police waiting to arrest him.
00:52He was escorted to the police station and told he was only there as part of an investigation.
00:57See, we just gotta do our investigation and that's it.
00:59But as it would turn out, the investigation wouldn't be that simple.
01:04And unfortunately for the cops, Kirk spent his hour in the interrogation room displaying
01:08exactly what to do in this situation, and making the cops' lives as difficult as he
01:13possibly could.
01:14What's your full name?
01:15Come on.
01:16I don't know.
01:17So what do you want I got for you?
01:18This is just a formality.
01:19Just tell us your name, date of birth, and all that stuff.
01:20No, I'm not trying to do a formality.
01:21I've got to live.
01:22Immediately, it's obvious that this isn't going to be an easy one for the detectives.
01:35Kirk starts off by refusing to answer any of the officers' questions, even just regarding
01:40his own name.
01:42He's already been read his Miranda rights, informing him that he has the right to remain
01:45silent, so it seems as though he's choosing to do just that.
01:49Interestingly, however, he is choosing to waive his right to a lawyer, and let's be
01:54honest here, it's not because he can't afford it.
01:58The best course of action if you're ever put in this scenario is to stay silent and ask
02:02for a lawyer, but this time, Kirk is confident that he'll be able to wriggle out of this
02:08himself, as long as he chooses his words carefully.
02:11An incident occurred at the hotel, 1500 Southwest First Avenue, that you were there for, correct?
02:24What incident?
02:25An incident, you had an altercation with somebody?
02:28No.
02:28You didn't.
02:29Did you have any business dealings with somebody?
02:31No.
02:32You didn't?
02:32No.
02:33So somebody didn't bring you $20,000 in front of the hotel when you were issuing?
02:39No.
02:40Somebody had, somebody bring $20,000 that wasn't theirs and lied to them, and told them
02:46it was theirs on the 31st, and lied to them.
02:51That person, once he realized they was doing bad business, said nah, and left with his
02:57$20,000.
02:59Okay, so you didn't count?
03:00And got my contact information to do business the right way.
03:04That's what happened.
03:05No matter what time was this at?
03:06I don't know.
03:07Every time they chose it.
03:09Whatever time, whatever time the camera showed me not robbing no damn body that time.
03:14Kirk is claiming that he had nothing to do with anything that happened outside.
03:18His story is somewhat unclear, but he's essentially saying that his manager was talking
03:23with an event promoter about playing at a nightclub called Cafe Iguana Pines.
03:28But it turns out, the money that they were offering was stolen, and the promoter was
03:32acting strange during the deal.
03:35So instead of taking it and going through with it anyway, he told them to get their
03:39act together, and left without an argument.
03:42This, of course, does not explain the altercation outside that was clearly caught on camera.
03:47But with the footage unclear, and no witnesses nearby to identify the assailants, as long
03:52as Kirk sticks to his story, theoretically, things should be perfectly fine.
03:57Common sense.
03:58It's common sense.
04:00You know what I made to even be down here?
04:02The promoter booked me at that hotel.
04:05I didn't pay to be at the hotel.
04:06That was paid for.
04:08You didn't let me on my room.
04:09You would have saw close to a quarter billion dollars cash immediately.
04:14A hard-earned money.
04:15I don't got to take nothing from nobody, bro.
04:17Let me ask you this.
04:18I will go outside here right now and throw $10,000 in the air.
04:21Like, I do not care about no money.
04:24I don't.
04:25Was there an argument?
04:27No, there was no argument.
04:28I didn't argue with a soul.
04:30I didn't argue with a soul.
04:32My voice was never raised.
04:33Was there a fight?
04:33Never.
04:34Aggressive language from me.
04:36None of that.
04:36Was there a fight?
04:37None of that.
04:37No, I ain't seen no fight.
04:39And nothing's taken.
04:40We shouldn't be in no robbery here, bro.
04:43So when y'all get done doing what y'all doing, y'all need to do y'all job.
04:47Y'all need to file y'all process.
04:49Y'all need to arrest whoever gave y'all these false allegations, bro.
04:52This is bullshit.
04:54While it may just look like Kirk is flexing his rapper money here, this is actually a
04:59very good point for him to bring up in this situation.
05:02If he's doing random $30,000 deals on a weekday and paying for hundreds of thousands of people
05:07per month, what does he need $80 and an iPhone for?
05:11The further he can place himself from this event, both literally and figuratively, the
05:16better.
05:17From Kirk's point of view, he was nowhere near that crime.
05:20He had no reason to commit that crime, and he has sound and reasonable explanation for
05:25his whereabouts at the time.
05:27However, from the detective's side, a crime was committed, and Kirk's vehicle was right
05:32there as it happened.
05:34So they need to try and extract the information needed to piece his day together to come up
05:38with a story that Kirk cannot argue with.
05:40That forces him into a confession.
05:57How'd you get there?
05:58In a car.
05:59What kind of car?
06:00Was it a car you drove, somebody else drove?
06:03A Uber, bro.
06:04A Uber?
06:05Yeah.
06:05What kind of car was it?
06:06Small car, SUV, truck, what?
06:09I don't know.
06:10Let's talk about what matters.
06:12Let's talk about what y'all need to get me about this.
06:16When I'm driving in the car, when I went to go eat, what time I went, that don't have
06:20nothing to do with the fact I ain't robbed a damn soul.
06:25Me, nobody around me, ain't nobody robbing nobody.
06:28Let's take the word robbery out of the picture.
06:29So while we're here, if we take the word robbery out of the picture, y'all are robbery detectives,
06:34robbery units, that's the second word he said.
06:37That's the second word he said when he came in here, robbery.
06:39Come on, bro.
06:40Okay, listen.
06:41He told me, he asked a question to me about a robbery when I walked in my hotel.
06:44A robbery?
06:46I had every answer to the question he needed right there.
06:48Whoa, that ain't it.
06:48That's false.
06:50Throw that out the window.
06:51We talking about robbery, bro?
06:52It's nothing for me to talk about.
06:54So do you think that we just woke up this morning and decided to just run away?
06:58I think y'all got a phone call from somebody that's already a liar.
07:02I know they're a liar.
07:03Got a phone call from somebody that's a liar and y'all bought it.
07:06Y'all believe this.
07:07Y'all got me in here, and y'all put me in handcuffs.
07:10Brought me outside the hotel in handcuffs, cameras and shit all on me.
07:14Come on, bro.
07:14This shit is bad for what I got going on.
07:17And I ain't gonna do shit to that man.
07:19Even without a lawyer present, Kirk knows exactly what to do.
07:23He currently has the upper hand in this interrogation and needs to keep it that way.
07:27The cops are searching for anything that puts Kirk at the scene of the crime,
07:31but by redirecting the conversation away from that,
07:34back to what he thinks is actually important,
07:36there's no realistic way that they'll be able to get what they need.
07:40But even though he's winning,
07:42it's still worth noting how strange it is that he's not asking for a lawyer.
07:47Kirk obviously knows exactly what to do in an interrogation
07:50and has clearly spent time learning what to do.
07:52If that's true, he should also know that there's next to no scenarios
07:57where lawyering up will harm his case.
07:59But whether it's an ego thing or just a lapse in his thinking,
08:03Kirk is definitely still winning this interrogation.
08:07But he's about to start absolutely dominating.
08:10We come out criminals.
08:12When I do business, it's legally binded.
08:16It's legally binded.
08:18Everything I do, you have to sign a contract.
08:21You gotta sign a contract.
08:22It's a contract right now.
08:24The whole incident happened and nothing went wrong.
08:26Nothing happened.
08:28There was no...
08:32There was no fight.
08:33There was no scuffle.
08:34There was no...
08:34I ain't fight nobody.
08:37I ain't fight nobody.
08:38But y'all know it's too much.
08:40Y'all know too many lies.
08:42You get what I'm saying?
08:43That's why y'all gotta move backwards like that, bro.
08:45Like, it's bullshit.
08:47You're saying that they're lies,
08:48but you don't know what we have or don't have.
08:51Okay.
08:53I know if y'all had proof of me robbing somebody,
08:58we wouldn't even be talking.
08:59Y'all would have cuffed me.
09:00I would be charged with it.
09:02That's what I know, bro.
09:04That's what I know.
09:05Now, while this isn't necessarily true in every case,
09:09it is absolutely true here.
09:11If you're in an interrogation room
09:13and the cops are trying to find out details of the case
09:15and accusing you of a crime
09:17instead of charging you immediately,
09:19it very likely means that they're missing the details
09:22needed to charge you.
09:23In the vast majority of cases,
09:25an interrogation is only done to extract a confession
09:29when they don't have enough evidence
09:30to easily convict you otherwise.
09:32There are a few other niche scenarios
09:34such as trying to figure out why you committed a crime,
09:37but it's often very easy to distinguish
09:39why exactly you're there
09:41based on what you know about the event
09:43and what questions they're asking.
09:44If the cops know that you're guilty
09:46and have irrefutable evidence,
09:48cooperation has a lot of merit.
09:50But if they can't prove you did what they say you did,
09:53stay silent and ask for a lawyer,
09:55especially if you're innocent.
09:58What side of the story?
10:00My side of the story.
10:03I don't have a side to the story
10:04because I ain't done nothing to nobody.
10:06And before something could be done to me,
10:12I realized I was dealing with bad business.
10:16Why do you say it was bad business?
10:18What?
10:18Why do you say it was bad business?
10:19I already told y'all that you want to rewind this.
10:21You want to rewind it, bro.
10:22I already told y'all, bro.
10:24My story not going to come out different
10:25no matter how many times I say it, bro.
10:27It's not, bro.
10:28It's right here.
10:29When you press stop and rewind and play,
10:31I'm going here.
10:32I said it was bad business, bro.
10:34Come on, bro.
10:34It's not even going on my phone.
10:35I'm going to tell y'all now.
10:36You needed my help for his event.
10:40He already was in deep water
10:41because he's already doing...
10:43And I see why.
10:43He's already doing bad business.
10:45You see what I'm saying?
10:46He has an event that wasn't going to go as planned.
10:49He needed me to make up for that.
10:51He needed me to cover his ass.
10:53So he brought in another person,
10:54lied to him, swindled him.
10:56He thinking he coming to book me
10:57for a whole different event.
10:58And they tricking him,
10:59got him paying me to come do a walkthrough tonight.
11:03Come on, bro.
11:05His name is full of shit.
11:06And matter of fact, check them cameras.
11:09Y'all got crime scene investigation unit out there.
11:11Check the cameras.
11:12He'll meet up with somebody else in the lobby.
11:14Ask somebody, who is that?
11:15Ask him.
11:17Follow up on what I'm telling y'all.
11:19That's what we're trying to get you to do.
11:21I mean, shit, at the end of the day,
11:24at the end of the day,
11:26I would expect people to act on common sense anyway.
11:30The cops have realized that
11:31they're definitely not getting anything out of him for now.
11:34He's told his side of the story
11:36and made it clear that it won't be changing
11:38no matter what they say.
11:40So as is the protocol here,
11:42the detectives decide to leave the room
11:44and spend some time outside
11:45trying to come up with their next move.
11:47This is also often done
11:48as it gives the suspect time alone in the room
11:50to sit and build up anxiety.
11:52In many cases,
11:53it can actually be the difference
11:54between breaking through a suspect or not.
11:57But in this case,
11:58Kirk literally just shut his eyes and went to sleep.
12:02This dude really does not care.
12:05However, it seems as though
12:06the detectives couldn't come up with their next step
12:09and decided that nothing was going to make this guy budge.
12:12The next time a detective returned,
12:14it was regarding the security of Kirk's belongings
12:16that had been left in his hotel room.
12:18Even though he hasn't been convicted yet,
12:20he was still the prime suspect of this investigation.
12:24So he'd be spending some time in jail
12:25while they figured out what he was up to.
12:27And then the next day,
12:29he was back in his hotel room
12:30with the rest of the detectives.
12:32So they just had to figure out
12:33what to do with his stuff while he was locked up.
12:36But obviously,
12:37Kirk refused to let them touch his stuff
12:38and just let the hotel deal with it.
12:40Kirk was facing a possible sentence
12:42of up to 15 years in prison
12:44plus a $10,000 fine,
12:46plus any charges they could slap him with for the battery.
12:49That's only if they could gather enough evidence though.
12:52Evidence they absolutely were not getting from Kirk
12:55or the blocked security footage
12:57that was the only evidence they could gather.
13:00So just after 48 hours in jail,
13:02DaBaby was released and sent on his way.
13:05Just two months later,
13:06all charges were dropped
13:07and he remained a free man.
