00:00Interrogation rooms hold some of the most horrifying, saddening, and life-changing moments
00:11in history.
00:12So here are some of the craziest interrogation moments of all time.
00:21Starting out with Thomas Robinson, a 27-year-old facing life in prison after shooting a 17-year-old
00:26boy.
00:27But Thomas wasn't going down easily.
00:29In fact, he was determined to make the cop's life as difficult as he could, in the most
00:34dangerous ways imaginable.
00:37As the policeman moves to handcuff him, Thomas leans over and glances at the holster on the
00:41cop's waist, where he gets an idea that could end in death for him and the officer.
00:47Thomas made a leap for the cop's gun, but due to safety features built into the holster,
01:04he wasn't able to get it out.
01:06After a short struggle, two more cops entered the room with tasers to subdue him, and he
01:11was eventually restrained without further issue.
01:14This obviously just looks like a case where the suspect wanted to escape and was prepared
01:18to do so by any means necessary.
01:20But take another listen to what he's saying as he's fighting with the cops.
01:28If he was really trying to escape, it's unlikely he'd be repeating the words, kill me, from
01:33the get-go.
01:34Instead, it's possible that Thomas was so terrified of his sentence and the position
01:39he was in, that he made the radical move to scare the officers in hopes that they'd
01:44shoot him and spare him from what's to come.
01:47Bringing a firearm into an interrogation room is an incredibly foolish idea, and the majority
01:52of police departments forbid it for the safety of the detectives.
01:56But it seems this Las Vegas police department also forgot about that rule, and come incredibly
02:01close to seeing the consequences.
02:18This man convicted of killing a two-year-old boy actually managed to retrieve the gun from
02:22the detective's holster, resulting in a mad scramble to get it back off him.
02:27It took three separate officers and multiple punches to the head to reclaim the firearm.
02:32Somehow, nobody was hurt, but Ryan Waller wasn't so lucky, as his story ends in a truly
02:39horrifying way, after he was brought in for interrogation with a bullet still stuck in
02:44his head.
02:59But little did police officers know, he was actually telling the truth.
03:04As while 18-year-old Ryan was being mocked by detectives, he was suffering from a gunshot
03:09to the head, and experiencing a brain bleed that could end his life at any moment.
03:19On the 23rd of December 2006, two men broke into Ryan Waller's house, looking for revenge
03:24for a past argument.
03:26Ryan heard the noise at the door, but when he went to investigate, a hand reached inside
03:30and shot him twice in the eye.
03:33The two men, Richie and Larry Carver, then entered his house and shot Ryan's girlfriend
03:38Heather, killing her instantly.
03:40By some miracle, 18-year-old Ryan survived, and was able to talk to police when they arrived
03:45hours later.
03:47Given he'd just been shot in the head, he told them he had no idea what happened, but
03:52instead of being taken straight to the hospital, he was taken to the police station and interrogated
03:57for the longest hour of his life.
04:00Before the interview started, Ryan was left in the room alone.
04:03He squirmed in pain for 20 minutes straight, and worse yet, he was handcuffed to the desk
04:09and unable to scream for help.
04:24Ryan is obviously not okay, but the detectives begin the interrogation anyway.
04:50The way the detective is talking to Ryan implies
05:18that he knows something is wrong.
05:21He's raising his voice slightly, slowing down, and talking in very simplified language just
05:27as you would a child.
05:28Yet, even with the massive red mark around Ryan's face and the dazed responses he's giving,
05:33the detective still decides that nothing is wrong and continues questioning him.
06:48Ryan and Heather lived with another person whose name isn't public.
07:04There's a possibility that it's the Christina he's referring to here, but either way, nobody
07:09else was home at any point of the night of the attack.
07:12Ryan is clearly suffering traumatic brain injury, and it's astonishing that the detective
07:17isn't connecting the dots.
07:19Even if it was just blunt force like Ryan is telling him, he still should be checked
07:23out by a doctor given how he's acting.
07:26But of course, that's not how it happens.
07:29Instead, it somehow gets even more messed up.
08:00I don't know, man.
08:00I really don't.
08:01I really don't.
08:02I just want to go and go to sleep, man.
08:05Ryan, you're not going to go anywhere.
08:07Do you know what happened in your house last night?
08:09Uh-uh.
08:10What happened?
08:11I don't know what happened.
08:12You're all beat up, so tell me what happened.
08:15I don't know.
08:16I just want to go to sleep, man.
08:18There's a dead girl in your living room.
08:21She's dead?
08:22Yes.
08:23Heather, the girl on the couch, is dead?
08:26I don't know.
08:26If she's on the couch, she's dead.
08:29Well, these people came over, Richie and his dad, with a shooting arrow, blow up, and darts.
08:35You know what I'm talking about?
08:36Yeah.
08:37They hit me and her with those.
08:39That's it.
08:40And Heather wasn't there.
08:41And Eric wasn't there.
08:42It was just me and Heather.
08:46And then what happened?
08:47And that's it.
08:49Richie and his dad tried to break in through the back.
08:52Richie and his dad?
08:54Mm-hmm.
08:55Who's Richie?
08:56I don't know.
08:58Well, you obviously know him.
08:59You know his name by Richie?
09:00He used to live there.
09:02Was he a roommate of yours?
09:04He used to be.
09:06They hit you?
09:07Yeah.
09:08Now it's Richie that hit you, not Heather?
09:10No, Richie and his dad.
09:11Why?
09:13Because they were trying to get their stuff.
09:14I don't know why.
09:16And they had some kind of bow and arrows?
09:19They each had two revolvers, and they didn't left any shells.
09:23OK, you just said they had bow and arrows.
09:25Now they have revolvers?
09:26That's what I meant.
09:27They have revolvers.
09:29They have revolvers?
09:29Yes.
09:30And then what happened?
09:31And then they shot us with those.
09:34They shot both of you?
09:35Yeah.
09:36Where'd they shoot you at?
09:37I got shot in the eye.
09:39You got shot in the eye?
09:41I think so.
09:42With a revolver?
09:43I think.
09:43I don't know, man.
09:44I don't know.
09:48Then what happened?
09:49I don't know.
09:53You don't know a lot.
09:55I don't, man.
09:56I really don't.
09:57I'd like to see this detective try and articulate himself
10:01anywhere near as Ryan is in this situation.
10:04He's managed to recount the exact sequence of events,
10:07as well as the perpetrator's names,
10:09with the revolver bullet still in his brain.
10:13It does sound like an unbelievable story,
10:15and that's probably why the cop is essentially
10:19laughing at him by now.
10:21But that still doesn't excuse any part of what's going on.
10:24He's obviously distressed, in pain,
10:26and needs to go to the hospital.
10:29But he's still more than a half an hour away
10:31from any form of salvation.
10:33Ryan, why don't you tell me what really happened there?
10:35Because I don't believe.
10:36I really don't know, man.
10:37I really don't.
10:38I don't know.
10:38I could tell you anything, I swear.
10:40I want you to tell me the truth.
10:42That's all I want to know.
10:43Richie and his dad came there.
10:45And I don't know why.
10:45I don't know why.
10:47I don't know why, but they put me in sleeping hold.
10:49And they put me in sleeping hold with the arrows and shit.
10:52I lived through that crap.
10:54You're all over the board here, number one.
10:56You're seeing bows and arrows.
10:58You're seeing revolvers.
10:59And you're seeing some other thing.
11:00And you're saying they shot you in the eye, OK?
11:04They shot you with a revolver in your eye.
11:06Yes.
11:08And that's it.
11:09Is it a BB gun?
11:10No, it was a real gun, man.
11:12It was just a revolver.
11:13If they shot you in the eye with a revolver,
11:18you wouldn't be talking to me right now.
11:20It was most likely you'd be dead.
11:22That's what I thought, too, man.
11:23I really don't know.
11:25I really don't know.
11:26And I just want to go back to sleep and try to go back to bed.
11:29You're not going back to bed, OK?
11:33That's not going to happen.
11:34What happened to Heather?
11:36Heather got shot.
11:37Where did she get shot?
11:39Inside the face once.
11:40She got shot inside of the face?
11:42Mm-hmm.
11:43How close were you to her when she got shot in the face?
11:47It was after I got shirts.
11:48I didn't even hear anything.
11:49So you got shot first?
11:51Mm-hmm.
11:51And what happened?
11:52Did you call 911?
11:54Uh-uh.
11:55Did you see if she was alive?
11:57She was sleeping still, and that's it.
11:59I just let her sleep.
12:00She got shot in the side of the face, and you let her sleep?
12:04Yes.
12:05This does not make sense, Ryan.
12:07I know I didn't mean to, man.
12:09I'm sorry.
12:09I didn't know she was passing out.
12:11That's because I got shot wrong once, too,
12:13and I was going to pass out.
12:15OK, this is now, not before.
12:18You're saying right now you've been shot?
12:21Yes.
12:21In the eye?
12:22Yes.
12:23With the revolver?
12:24Yes.
12:25All right.
12:26Ryan, you need to start telling me the truth,
12:27because your story doesn't make sense.
12:29I'm trying, man.
12:30I don't know.
12:31What happened with you and Heather last night?
12:35Her dad came and shot the house.
12:40And shot her?
12:41Mm-hmm.
12:43Her dad shot her?
12:44Mm-hmm.
12:45All right.
12:46And then leaves?
12:47Mm-hmm.
12:48And what did you do?
12:50I tried to go back to sleep.
12:52After you'd been shot?
12:53Mm-hmm.
12:54In the eye?
12:55Mm-hmm.
12:56You didn't know enough to call 911?
12:58Mm-mm.
12:58Ryan, look at me.
13:00Ryan.
13:01Yes.
13:02I don't know, man.
13:03I really don't know.
13:03Why did you shoot Heather, Ryan?
13:05I didn't shoot Heather.
13:06She was already shot once by her brother, I swear.
13:09Richie?
13:10Yes.
13:11Richie shot his own sister?
13:13Yes, I swear.
13:14That's it.
13:15Sit down.
13:16Not me.
13:19And you've been shot in the eye?
13:20Yes.
13:21All right, put your legs down, man.
13:24Put your legs down.
13:25Bring your face closer.
13:30Oh, my head hurts.
13:35OK.
13:41Yeah, be right back.
13:43OK.
13:47Finally, the detective at least considers the facts
13:51that Ryan might be in some form of physical distress.
13:54He leaves the room to ask for an ambulance
13:56and returns momentarily to try and get a few more
13:59details about the shooting.
14:00Ryan clarifies that Heather isn't
14:02related to Richie or his dad, and that he's
14:05got no idea why they attacked him that evening.
14:0710 minutes later, the fire department
14:09arrives to take a look at Ryan's injury.
14:11And he's acting like he has a serious head injury,
14:15which would make sense.
14:17What's your name?
14:18Ryan.
14:20Yeah, we'll take him.
14:21I don't know why.
14:22Well, we can tell.
14:24Has it been like that before, or it just happened tonight?
14:28It's been like this for like a day or so.
14:30So it happened what, the other night?
14:33I don't know.
14:34You don't know what happened?
14:37Were there guns around?
14:39Kid Eric did it.
14:40I don't know how he did it exactly.
14:43I might have been shot.
14:44I don't know.
14:45Ryan gets his blood pressure taken.
14:46And finally, after 56 minutes of unnecessary and ultimately
14:50deadly interrogation, he is taken to the hospital.
14:54Upon inspection at the hospital, doctors
14:56immediately realized his status was critical
14:59and that he also had indeed been shot in the eye.
15:02They also told his father that he'd
15:04contracted an infection that could have been prevented
15:07had he received proper care.
15:09Ryan stayed at the hospital for 35 days
15:12and lost part of his brain and his left eye.
15:15Worst of all, though, he experienced regular seizures
15:19from the day he left the hospital until 2016,
15:22when one finally took his life.
15:24Richie and Larry were both given life in prison
15:27without the possibility of parole.
15:29Ryan's father also sued the police department.
15:33But as is so often the case, he only
15:35received a fraction of the punishment, less than three
15:38years in prison.
15:40Many people believe this officer should
15:42be charged with assault and possibly even murder
15:45and that three years is absolutely not enough,
15:49especially compared to cases like Reed Durant, who's
15:51facing up to 30 years in prison after attacking a cop.
15:55Reed was arrested at an elementary school
15:57after he was seen pretending to be
15:59the father of a kindergartner.
16:01Reed was seen to be acting strangely around the kids
16:04and failed to correctly name any of the children there.
16:07So he was arrested and taken to the police station.
16:10In the interrogation, Reed freely
16:12told officers that he intended to lure
16:14one of the children out, feed them
16:16candy laced with tranquilizers, then abduct them
16:20while they were unconscious.
16:22But after what seemed like an easy interrogation,
16:25Reed suddenly decided that the detective had heard enough
16:28and made a bid for his escape.
16:30Oh, fuck.
16:31I-538, you need to get up here.
16:35Put your hands behind your back now.
16:38Are you kidding me right now?
16:40Reed had picked up a pen and attempted
16:42to stab the officer with it.
16:44But the officer's reflexes and composure
16:46helped him to instantly take him down and restrain him.
16:49That and the fact that the pen isn't the most effective weapon.
16:53Either way, Reed was arrested and charged
16:56with attempted kidnapping and attempted
16:58with attempted kidnapping and now a felony count of assault.
17:02He's currently awaiting trial and facing
17:04up to 30 years in prison.
17:06Reed's escape obviously didn't end very well for him.
17:09But the story is different for Quantrell
17:11Schwartzlow, who managed to escape the cops faster
17:14than anyone in history.
17:21Quantrell was brought in for strangling a girl
17:23and assaulting her, a crime he clearly
17:25didn't want to be convicted of.
17:28No.
17:45Oh, no.
17:46Fuck me.
17:48Unfortunately for Quantrell, his handcuffs were a dead giveaway
17:52and he was captured four hours later.
17:54While it's unknown exactly what happens to Quantrell after,
17:57this clip will forever put him in the interrogation hall of fame.
18:01However, Ricky Hawthorne took a much more straightforward approach to ending his interrogation,
18:07managing to confess in record time.
18:09Ricky was found covered in blood near the bodies of Lara Kuchar and Tommy Skeens.
18:15Lara had clearly been assaulted.
18:18Ricky's DNA was also found at the scene, so police had no worries when bringing him in.
18:22Surprisingly though, Ricky would make it even easier for them.
18:44So much for staying silent.
18:45However, Ricky is alleging that he wasn't actually the murderer.
18:49He just attacked the couple and assaulted Lara.
18:52It was someone else that finished the job.
18:55Even though the evidence was stacked against him, he still would have had a better chance
18:58of getting away with it if he just stayed silent.
19:14Despite his claims, it was determined that the couple died of the injuries inflicted
19:18by Ricky, and he was later found guilty of the first and second degree murder, as well
19:24as the attack on Lara.
