00:00the NFL News and Notes around
00:07training camp live right here
00:09on this Wednesday on the early
00:10line on sports grid the road to
00:12kickoff. Maybe Donnie and I get
00:14a little bit of shine as we
00:15break down this segment Robert
00:18Saleh meeting with the media
00:19yesterday, of course, the head
00:20coach of the New York Jets
00:22saying that Aaron Rodgers at
00:24the age of 40 years old and
00:26recovering from the torn
00:27Achilles last year is unlikely
00:29to play this preseason. Alright.
00:35Yeah. Well, let's let's get it
00:36started here at the
00:37foundational point here, right?
00:39Like Aaron Rodgers not playing.
00:40Is it a really big deal for me?
00:42But you just saw a class action
00:44lawsuit come through and won by
00:46the lawyers for the NFL game or
00:49the season ticket not to take
00:51it. What's good NFL Sunday
00:52ticket? Excuse me, right?
00:53Getting money back. Yeah, I was
00:55a season ticket order for 15
00:56years for the Philadelphia
00:57Eagles. Here's what I'm getting
00:58at. Aaron Rodgers not going to
00:59play in the preseason. Why do
01:00you pay full price for that?
01:01Like when nobody plays, why do
01:02you pay full price for two to
01:04four home games in the
01:05preseason, which is absolutely
01:07outrageous. So I look at Aaron
01:09Rodgers not playing. I don't
01:10care. I don't have season
01:11tickets anymore. And if the
01:12Jets fan doesn't have season
01:13tickets, they shouldn't care
01:14either. But why should we care
01:15about preseason to pay those
01:16fees that we pay on the season
01:18tickets? Because quite frankly,
01:20let's just say if you're a Jets
01:21fan and your one ticket costs
01:23$200 per game, you know, it's
01:25going to take place when you
01:26play the bills at MetLife
01:27Stadium. It's 200 bucks, but
01:29you also have that same $200
01:30fee in the preseason where
01:32nobody's going to pay. So how
01:33about that Aaron Rodgers? Let's
01:34do Aaron Rodgers and the New
01:36York Jets and the NFL and get
01:37that money back from the
01:38preseason because apparently it
01:39doesn't matter to them. Why are
01:41we paying full prices anyway
01:42for those games, Ben? How about
01:43that slam? I had no idea where
01:47that was going. Clearly you were
01:49thinking about what you wanted
01:50to say when I stopped a little
01:52bit quick right there as I was
01:54reading the tweet. All right,
01:56Donnie made his point about
01:58preseason play and how we feel
02:00about it. Of course, this week
02:02the New York Jets putting on
02:03pads for the first time. There
02:05was the viral social media clip
02:07of Aaron Rodgers and Garrett
02:08Wilson getting into it. They're
02:09just trying to iron things out.
02:11It would seem for the Jets
02:13during this offseason. It's not
02:14like Aaron Rodgers needs to
02:15prove anything during preseason
02:18and you want to keep the guy as
02:19healthy as possible. I will say
02:22this though, Donnie, the Jets
02:23were of course the feature of
02:24hard knocks last year. How
02:26could they not have been the
02:27storyline that was Aaron Rodgers
02:29playing for a new team for the
02:31first time in his 19 year NFL
02:34career. And the thing that was
02:36bemoaned from a football
02:38perspective, not a dramatic
02:40perspective, but a football
02:41perspective was the Jets
02:43offensive line during training
02:45camp, during joint practices,
02:47during preseason games. They
02:49draft Olufosinu out of Penn
02:52State. He will hope to help
02:54that offensive line, but that's
02:56a huge thing to monitor for the
02:58New York Jets throughout their
02:59preseason games, regardless of
03:01who is under center. Yeah, and
03:03I don't know, like, I don't
03:04think he needs to get snaps, but
03:06there is something about having
03:07camaraderie and getting some
03:08things worked out in a game
03:10perspective. Now you are going
03:11to have joint practices. You
03:12could do some of those things,
03:13but nothing beats game day where
03:15you're going through that
03:16entire routine. And it's not as
03:17if they're going to start as I
03:18always like to say against the
03:19Arizona Cardinals at home, like
03:21hey, soft landing spot, let's
03:22get it together. You go right
03:24into the fire on the road game
03:25number one at San Francisco
03:27where you know that front seven
03:28is going to be out for blood. I
03:30would like to see maybe a
03:31quarter of work between Aaron
03:32Rodgers and the offensive line.
03:34He doesn't have to throw the
03:35football like, hey, I'm not
03:36going to take a five or seven
03:37step drop. You don't have to do
03:38that. Quick slants out there,
03:39get the protections correct, get
03:41used to it here because you
03:42can't say this. Well, Aaron
03:43Rodgers got hurt week 14 last
03:44year. Aaron Rodgers got hurt
03:46within the first three plays of
03:47the season. So good luck again
03:49this year when Aaron Rodgers is
03:50out there for those first three
03:51plays and Mr. Bosa and company
03:53are collapsing that pocket right
03:55away. Like, oh, maybe we should
03:56add a little bit more practice
03:57on game day. I mean, when you
04:00think about it, right for Aaron
04:02Rodgers Monday night football
04:04game to open up the season, it
04:06has to be a harrowing
04:07experience. Five and a half
04:08points spread in favor of the
04:1049ers in Santa Clara on that
04:12opening Monday night week
04:14number one. How about the
04:16quarterback situation in Denver
04:18Sean Payton meeting with the
04:19media yesterday, pretty much
04:21saying that all three
04:22quarterbacks in the QB room,
04:24the rookie Bo Nix out of Oregon
04:26the 12th overall draft pick
04:28Jarrett Stidham, a veteran
04:29backup and Zach Wilson now in
04:32the mile high city have been
04:33taking various reps with the
04:35ones and the starters at
04:36different points throughout
04:38training camp. Payton
04:39finishing with this quote, no
04:40news to announce there. I know
04:43you're looking for it. Donnie
04:45when all is said and done,
04:46who's that week one starting
04:47quarterback for Denver? If you
04:50stink and you draft the
04:51quarterback in the first round,
04:53he's got to be the guy that
04:54typically gets under center in
04:56week one. Now, there are
04:57extreme circumstances like we
04:58talk about Drake May in New
05:00England, which I don't think
05:01it's right because they might
05:02open up the season. Oh, and
05:03seven, you don't want to do
05:04that to a real play, but I just
05:05figure like where Denver is at
05:06this point, just let Bo Nix go
05:08out there and get after it.
05:09And it's not one of those
05:10scenarios like, hey, you know
05:11what? He only started 11
05:12college football games. He's
05:13real green. Bo Nix has played
05:14like 16 lifetimes in college
05:16football and had a lot of
05:17success. Let him spin out there.
05:19What if he got to lose Sean
05:20paid? It's going to be Bo Nix.
05:23I actually feel pretty
05:24comfortable with saying that we
05:26have talked a lot about this
05:27DRS. There are a couple of
05:29quarterback room markets that
05:31you can bet. Not everyone
05:32features a rookie Caleb
05:34Williams, Jaden Daniels for
05:36sure. 100% going to be the week
05:38one starters in Chicago and
05:40Washington respectively. I
05:41would say Bo Nix around a 98
05:43and a half 99% chance. In fact,
05:46just follow the odds three
05:48rookie quarterbacks of the six
05:50that were taken in the top 12 of
05:52the 2024 NFL draft have a
05:54season-long passing yards prop
05:56including Bo Nix and it's
05:58Jaden Daniels and Caleb
05:59Williams who are the other two
06:02and I would just say this Sean
06:04Payton known as an offensive
06:06mastermind 2850 and a hook. If
06:09Bo Nix is going to start from
06:11week number one and play
06:12something like 15, 16, 17 games
06:14this year, even though the
06:15Broncos have just a measly win
06:17total of five and a half. Bo
06:19Nix is going over that number
06:20of 2850 and a half. Oh, he
06:23should. Of course, if he's 17
06:24games, you expect them not to be
06:26a great football team, which
06:27means more throwing in the
06:28fourth quarter. And also you
06:29want to put your quarterback in
06:30spots where you can actually get
06:32game film together to teach him
06:33lessons, which means hey, look
06:35even though we're down 14
06:36points late in this fourth
06:37quarter. We're not handing the
06:38football to get out of here.
06:39We're actually going to go try
06:40to drive down and score and get
06:41a little bit more mileage on
06:42your arm. I always love that
06:44when you say it because the
06:45question is going to be, it's
06:46not like, hey, if he starts
06:47game number one and play 17
06:48weeks, is he going to cover
06:492850? He absolutely is going to
06:51do that. You're just trying to
06:52guess right where his season
06:53doesn't start in week eight,
06:55right at that point. So I'm
06:56with you on that. He starts
06:57from day number one. I don't
06:58think you pull him in week
06:59number five if he's struggling
07:01because otherwise you do way
07:02more damage than you can begin
07:03and Peyton's a good coach. He's
07:05done good things with
07:06quarterbacks in the past. I
07:07think he gets over that as well.
07:10Russ wasn't prolific last year,
07:123070 yards to well over that
07:15number. And he only threw for
07:17more than two 53 times, more
07:19than 300 twice very early in the
07:22year. Hall of Fame game brief
07:24now live right here on the
07:25early line on sports grid. It
07:27is the eve of August. It is the
07:29eve of football. Let me just
07:32tell you this. August 1st comes
07:34around tomorrow. The start of
07:35this show, I might shed a tear.
07:37I'm going to be so fired up
07:38because August 1st means a
07:40couple of things. First in the
07:42National Football League. It is
07:43our first NFL preseason game of
07:462024. The Hall of Fame game in
07:48Kenton, Ohio between the
07:50Chicago Bears and the Houston
07:52Texans in August also means a
07:55month in which college football
07:57is going to be played August
08:0024th. That is week zero. Come
08:03on DRS. We absolutely love it.
08:05The Hall of Fame game tomorrow
08:06in Kenton between the Bears and
08:08the Texans and some news for
08:10Chicago yesterday. The
08:12extension of wide receiver DJ
08:14Moore about to enter year number
08:16two with this Bears franchise
08:18four year deal with $110 million
08:21$82.6 million guaranteed only
08:24trailing AJ Brown and the big
08:26money of Justin Jefferson,
08:27third most guaranteed money for
08:29a wide receiver currently in the
08:31National Football League. That
08:32also the richest extension the
08:34Chicago Bears have ever given
08:36out in franchise history. Bear
08:38spending some money making some
08:40shrewd moves. The vibes are high
08:42in the Windy City. Imagine this
08:44a wide receiver in the middle of
08:46his prime wanting a new contract
08:48and getting a new contract
08:49before the season starts to make
08:51everybody in that locker room
08:53happy. Couldn't be the
08:54Cincinnati Bengals at this point.
08:55So that's where I go immediately
08:57when I see wide receivers get
08:58paid. I just go Cincinnati.
09:01We're fading you all season long.
09:03Uh-huh. That's how I'm doing it.
09:06Okay, DRS. I like the
09:07internalization for Cincinnati
09:09there, but for Chicago a prudent
09:11move financially. It's what we
09:13talk about all the time, right?
09:14DJ Moore was still under contract
09:16for this year and the following
09:17year, but you do the extension
09:19early to not only keep him with
09:21the franchise, keep him happy,
09:22reward him for a great opening
09:24season in Chicago when you've got
09:26a bright and promising future
09:28with a new rookie quarterback in
09:29the face of the franchise in
09:31Caleb Williams. He want everybody
09:33pulling on the same rope and you
09:36can average out a very rich
09:38contract for the extension over
09:40the final two years of his
09:42current deal and make it make
09:44financial sense along the way.
09:47We'll talk about Bears franchise
09:48history in just a moment, but
09:50Caleb Williams is not going to
09:52play tomorrow. It is confirmed
09:54in the Hall of Fame game. He was
09:56asked earlier this week and he
09:57said I want to but I trust
09:59whatever the decision the
10:00coaches are making. Do you agree
10:03DRS that Caleb Williams should
10:05not be playing in the Hall of
10:06Fame game? Well, I always think
10:08rookies should play to sort of,
10:10you know, get their feet wet in
10:11the NFL and go through that game
10:13day, you know, putting on the
10:14uniform getting ready
10:15anticipation. I always think
10:16that's something but sometimes
10:18people are short-sighted in this
10:19because when you see that Caleb
10:21Williams isn't going to play if
10:22he does play that doesn't mean
10:24he just gets reps. That means
10:25the entire starting offense
10:27offensive lineman tight ends
10:28wide receivers and running backs
10:30must all play with them because
10:31you're not sending your
10:32superstar rookie out there with
10:34fifth-string guys that are going
10:35to be, you know, selling
10:36insurance in two weeks at this
10:38point. You need everybody in
10:40alignment here. And that's why
10:41the starters don't play if one
10:42doesn't play particularly
10:43quarterback. Look that sends the
10:45Domino down. He is going to play
10:47in the preseason. Otherwise,
10:48that would be ludicrous. But I
10:49just think the Bears are saying
10:50look, I'm not spending my
10:51starting line out there to go
10:53with him just to have a series
10:55here. We'll get to that at
10:56a later time. I don't mind it.
10:58Yeah, I don't really either
11:00right? I think you could look
11:01at it from a glass half full or
11:02a glass half empty approach
11:04anytime you put the face of the
11:06franchise out there for a
11:07meaningless exhibition game
11:09despite its significance in
11:10Canton and he has a risk of
11:12injury. That is always
11:14something that you are going to
11:15proceed with caution and it's
11:17not like he's going to miss out
11:19on one of the preseason games
11:21for Chicago both the Texans and
11:24the Bears will play three more
11:25preseason games after this
11:27exhibition. That is the Hall of
11:29Fame games. So he's got plenty
11:31of time to get his feet wet in
11:33the National Football League
11:34albeit in preseason really good
11:37point as well. Donnie. You're
11:38not going to put Caleb Williams
11:39out there with the reserves. He
11:40is not going to throw the
11:41football to at any point
11:43throughout this season. Despite
11:45the fact that he is just a
11:47rookie. We'll have plenty more
11:49Hall of Fame handicaps in a
11:51coming tomorrow in our show, but
11:54let's take an early look at the
11:55line here a one and a half point
11:57spread in favor of the Texans
11:59the over under 31 and a half. So
12:01it is going to be the Davis Mills
12:03show on one side for Houston
12:05against Tyson Bajan and the boys
12:07on the other side for Chicago.
12:09We're not going to see CJ
12:10Stroud. We're not going to see
12:11many of the starters and the
12:13significant players for either
12:15of these two teams tomorrow.
12:17Yes. And again, what we're
12:18looking forward to most is to see
12:20how this kickoff rule is going to
12:21take place in the NFL and can it
12:23lead to more scoring but you're
12:24always going to see those high
12:2620s low 30 price numbers here on
12:28these early preseason games
12:29because the goal for the NFL
12:30teams used to be let's get the
12:32guys in shape. The goal is now
12:33to can we just keep this clock
12:35running to get out of here
12:36without any injuries any backups
12:38the way it is.
