00:00:16and hope to continue their domination against a pointless McLaren-Mercedes team.
00:00:23Can Ferrari and Schumacher delight the Toposi on the hillsides of Imola?

00:01:23It's a great day.
00:01:25We'll countdown to Indy and meet Murray Walker,
00:01:28the voice of F1 racing to millions of English-speaking fans.
00:01:32We'll have highlights of one of the most memorable
00:01:34nail-biting qualifying sessions ever,
00:01:36and our exclusive interview with the Schumacher brothers
00:01:39together for the first time.
00:01:45Cars coming out on their reconnaissance laps.
00:01:49With just a little less than 30 minutes before the start
00:01:53of round three of the world championship,
00:01:55as Schumacher and Ferrari seek the hat trick.
00:01:58Three wins in a row.
00:02:01Well, the big news of these two weeks has been David Coulthard,
00:02:05second place in Brazil, disqualified,
00:02:07and McLaren appealed to the FIA.
00:02:10That appeal was heard this week and denied.
00:02:13Peter asked David Coulthard what happened to his car in Brazil.
00:02:18It wasn't a miscalculation at all.
00:02:20It was damage caused due to running on the track.
00:02:23We were getting G loadings, up to 30 G on the bump,
00:02:27on the straight.
00:02:28That's a significant amount of load,
00:02:30much more than we ever imagined you could see.
00:02:32No one had raced on that track before,
00:02:34obviously being resurfaced.
00:02:35So how can you know beforehand what the end result's going to be
00:02:39until you've done one Grand Prix?
00:02:41Five of the top six cars had problems with their plank.
00:02:43My plank was fine because I ran the car 10mm higher
00:02:45than I did in Australia.
00:02:47But I ran it vertically stiffer than I did in Australia, in fact,
00:02:50to accommodate the potential problems with the bumps.
00:02:54You know, what's happened is, for the people at home,
00:02:56you've got your wing end plate parallel to the ground
00:02:58and it's rotated.
00:02:59So it's 2mm illegal at one side
00:03:02and it's therefore 2mm more than it needs to be at the front edge.
00:03:06So when we were able to sort of loosen the bolts
00:03:08and do that in the scrutineering, it was then legal again.
00:03:11So it's clearly something that's happened due to the damage of the track
00:03:14rather than something we set up to do.
00:03:17Well, it's probably one of David's greatest drives ever,
00:03:20but, you know, you have to draw the line somewhere.
00:03:22Yes, and the rule was enforced that we'll have more on this
00:03:25during our pre-race and during today's race coverage.
00:03:28So Coulthard does not get six points in Brazil.
00:03:31Michael Schumacher has a maximum 20.
00:03:33Fisichella elevated to second place, has eight.
00:03:36Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher at six.
00:03:38Frentzen, Trulli and Villeneuve.
00:03:40And in the constructors, we have Ferrari
00:03:42with a clear 26-point lead.
00:03:43Benetton with eight.
00:03:44Jordan with seven.
00:03:45Williams with seven.
00:03:46British American racing with four.
00:03:47And nothing for McLaren Mercedes.
00:03:49That is the big statistic and the big surprise of this season thus far.
00:03:53Edwin de la Rosa in. He'll start 13th today.
00:03:56Well, the Coulthard disqualification is not the only news
00:03:59in the Formula One paddock this week.
00:04:01Let's go back behind the pit lane to Peter.
00:04:05Big news from the Imola paddock is that the FIA are introducing
00:04:08tough new measures at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
00:04:11Next round of the World Championship in an effort finally
00:04:14to eradicate traction control from Formula One.
00:04:17The measures are threefold.
00:04:18Two of them involve the car and the engine.
00:04:20The first involves the anti-stall device,
00:04:22the system the teams are currently using to get the car off the line.
00:04:26The new rule says that the clutch must be disengaged
00:04:29whenever the anti-stall device is in place.
00:04:31Secondly, engine parameters.
00:04:33The parameters that involve the mapping of the engine
00:04:35are now going to be very, very tightly limited.
00:04:37Currently, there are about 14 involved.
00:04:39And some engine designers use different engine mapping
00:04:41on every cylinder of the engine.
00:04:43Fourteen down to five.
00:04:45That will be another way of reducing the traction control elements.
00:04:48Finally, the drivers must now control their own speed in the pit lane.
00:04:51No longer can they just press a preset button
00:04:54and allow the car to slow itself.
00:04:56So, are we going to see more stop-go penalties
00:04:58as a result of drivers not going slow enough in the pit lane?
00:05:01Let's hope not, because that would affect the outcome of Grand Prix
00:05:04in a way that we wouldn't necessarily want.
00:05:06Finally, the Jaguar team.
00:05:07Rumors circulating there that Johnny Herbert is under the cosh.
00:05:10He needs to perform well today, he needs to go well at Silverson.
00:05:13If he doesn't, the rumors say,
00:05:15he might well be replaced by Luciano Berti, the Jaguar test driver.
00:05:19When our Mercedes-Benz pre-race continues,
00:05:22how meaningful is two millimeters on that front wing?
00:05:26We'll find out when we come back.
00:05:28Welcome back to Imola, as we count down to the Grand Prix of San Marino
00:05:31on our Mercedes-Benz pre-race.
00:05:33Mika Hakkinen out for one of his reconnaissance laps.
00:05:37McLaren Mercedes enters this race with no points.
00:05:39They could have had six,
00:05:40but for the Coulthard disqualification in Brazil.
00:05:43How much does two millimeters matter?
00:05:45Let's find out with Peter.
00:05:47Big security around the McLaren garage all weekend.
00:05:49Let's look at the sort of margins we're talking about here.
00:05:51Five millimeters on the front wing,
00:05:53five millimeters on the rear wing,
00:05:55let's look at the sort of margins we're talking about here.
00:05:57Five millimeters, the margin the FIA allowed designers,
00:06:00is approximately three quarters,
00:06:02the stack of three quarters you see here.
00:06:04Not very much.
00:06:05Two millimeters, that's the amount McLaren were over that margin,
00:06:08is one quarter.
00:06:09Now, could a driver actually feel a front wing
00:06:12that was out of position or illegal by two millimeters?
00:06:15I asked Ekbal Hamady,
00:06:16one of the leading aerodynamicists in the pit lane,
00:06:18responsible for last year's Stewart,
00:06:20and now at Arrows,
00:06:21whether he could or not.
00:06:23Over a lap, very little.
00:06:25Over a race distance, perhaps there is some benefit.
00:06:29Could you notice a two millimeter difference
00:06:31in front wing position in the wind tunnel?
00:06:34Yes.
00:06:35In a quality wind tunnel,
00:06:38you can measure much smaller gap than that.
00:06:42Guys, I don't know.
00:06:43I sympathize with David Coulthard's position.
00:06:45Equally, it's pretty clear that two millimeters
00:06:47does make a difference.
00:06:48Your call. Back to you.
00:06:50Well, I don't think it's going to make any difference
00:06:53whatsoever to a driver,
00:06:54but it obviously shows in a quality wind tunnel,
00:06:56is what he said.
00:06:58Rubens Barrichello on one of his recon laps.
00:07:02As we look ahead to Indianapolis,
00:07:03who's the most recognizable voice in sport?
00:07:05Well, in football, John Madden.
00:07:07In U.S. auto racing, Chris Sukotamaki.
00:07:09And to millions of English-speaking folks around the world,
00:07:12it is Murray Walker.
00:07:16I was gigantically impressed, Peter.
00:07:20This is my 52nd year of talking about Formula One,
00:07:23so I've been there, seen that, done the lot.
00:07:26And I can honestly put my hand on my heart and say
00:07:29I've never seen a more impressive,
00:07:31new Formula One set up anywhere, anytime.
00:07:35Enormous enthusiasm.
00:07:36That's what pleased me because I had some reservations
00:07:41about Formula One in America.
00:07:43It's been in so many places.
00:07:44I think eight different circuits.
00:07:46And although it went well at Long Beach for a while,
00:07:49it's never really succeeded anywhere.
00:07:51But I said to myself,
00:07:52if Formula One doesn't do well here at Indianapolis,
00:07:55it's not going to do well anywhere.
00:07:57The noise is going to be something like
00:07:59they've never heard in America before.
00:08:01And it is enormously colorful,
00:08:03and you've got a lot of very charismatic people.
00:08:05I mean, when I was there, they'd sold over 200,000 tickets.
00:08:08So it's going to be the biggest thing ever in history.
00:08:11Well, I think there's going to be a tremendous amount
00:08:13of Europeans coming over to watch this race
00:08:15at Indianapolis in September the 24th.
00:08:18I think that'll be a good part of the crowd.
00:08:20Mika Hakkinen completing his recon lap
00:08:22and now talks to his McLaren Mercedes folks.
00:08:25You can call the 800 number on your screen for tickets
00:08:28or email the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
00:08:30tickets at brickyard.com for ticket information.
00:08:34Formula One at Indy this September.
00:08:37When we come back, well, yesterday
00:08:39was one of the most nail-biting qualifying sessions
00:08:42we have ever seen.
00:08:44The poll wasn't decided until the final seconds.
00:08:47Stay with us for our Mercedes-Benz pre-race continues.
00:08:57Welcome back to Imola as we continue
00:08:59our Mercedes-Benz pre-race.
00:09:01In just a few moments,
00:09:02we'll have a look at some of the highlights
00:09:04Welcome back to Imola as we continue
00:09:06our Mercedes-Benz pre-race and countdown
00:09:08to the Grand Prix of San Marino,
00:09:10round three of the world championship.
00:09:12In two weeks, we'll be at Silverstone
00:09:14for the Grand Prix of Great Britain,
00:09:16Sunday, April 23rd, 10 a.m. your local time
00:09:19on most Fox Sportsnet affiliates.
00:09:21We'd like to hear your comments and suggestions
00:09:23for upcoming topics to discuss on our broadcast.
00:09:26We do read all your emails.
00:09:28Send them to formula1 at foxsports.net.
00:09:32We don't reply to all due to the volume we receive,
00:09:34but we do consider all of your story ideas and questions.
00:09:38So here's a helicopter look at Imola, Derek.
00:09:41Very interesting and rather unique circuit.
00:09:43A lot of uphill, downhill and...
00:09:45Wow!
00:09:46Well, it's a certainly lovely track, Mike.
00:09:48It's something like just over three miles round.
00:09:51Very, very twisty, but you can see the braking
00:09:54and actually overtaking area possibilities
00:09:56coming to Avazza.
00:09:57So let's, just in the yellow,
00:09:58so let's go and do a lap with Jarno Trulli.
00:10:02We're coming out on the pit straight.
00:10:04You see he's trying to get traction
00:10:05as he comes out of there.
00:10:06This beautiful circuit set in the Republic of San Marino
00:10:09on the Adriatic.
00:10:10He's working his way down at 185 miles an hour
00:10:12down into Tamburello, sweeping it through.
00:10:15The curbs are very smooth.
00:10:16You have to use the curbs a lot through this circuit.
00:10:18Some are much harsher, of course, than others.
00:10:21Braking very, very hard down through the first left hand
00:10:24into the Villeneuve chicane,
00:10:25the course Gilles Villeneuve chicane.
00:10:27A bit of opposite lock as he comes out there.
00:10:29Back up to 180 again for severe braking.
00:10:31Severe braking for Toza.
00:10:33Corner where you can do a little bit of overtaking
00:10:35but not easy.
00:10:36Then starts the uphill wind straight the way up
00:10:39as he goes up towards Piratella.
00:10:41Very, very fast left hand.
00:10:42This was put in to make the circuit a little safer.
00:10:45Very fast corner there,
00:10:46but it does fall away on the exit,
00:10:48so you have to be careful.
00:10:49Working his way down from 180 miles an hour
00:10:51to the second part of Acquaminerale.
00:10:53Again, trying to get traction as he comes up
00:10:55up over the Brau.
00:10:56Sweeps up towards a corner called the Variante Alta.
00:10:59This is a third gear corner,
00:11:00about 80 to 90 miles an hour.
00:11:02The track again falls away there.
00:11:04You've got to be careful.
00:11:05You don't go in too fast.
00:11:06Of course, at this stage,
00:11:07he is actually backing off somewhat
00:11:09because he's not, in fact, on a flying lap.
00:11:11So he's not taking all this as fast as he'd like.
00:11:14He's working his down to Ravazza.
00:11:16This is a second gear corner,
00:11:18two of them in a row.
00:11:19Get the traction as he comes out.
00:11:21Smooth as you can.
00:11:22You've got to keep the traction.
00:11:23It's a smooth surface.
00:11:24Working his way back up to 180 miles an hour
00:11:27for what they call the Variante Bassa.
00:11:29And then into the last chicane, the Trogado.
00:11:31And just on the right was the entrance to the pits.
00:11:33That was a lap with Jarno Trulli.
00:11:36Looks like you spent as much time on the curbs
00:11:38as you do on the actual asphalt here.
00:11:41You certainly do.
00:11:42There's Mika Hakkinen
00:11:43checking with some of the guys on the team
00:11:45before the start of a very, very important race
00:11:47for them, in my opinion.
00:11:48Yes, they really need to score here in Imola.
00:11:51Well, they scored in qualifying,
00:11:53but it wasn't decided until the final seconds yesterday.
00:11:57Well, it was certainly very dramatic, one has to say.
00:12:00The Ferrari fans were out in force,
00:12:02expecting Ferrari, really their home circuit,
00:12:04to do exceptionally well.
00:12:05Michael Schumacher wanted to do well,
00:12:06as did Rubens Barrichello.
00:12:08But Rubens didn't have a very good weekend,
00:12:10but he nonetheless did a good time getting fourth.
00:12:13Then we saw Ralf Schumacher.
00:12:14He was out with a slightly modified engine
00:12:16in his BMW Williams.
00:12:18He did a very, very good job.
00:12:20Pedro Diniz went out.
00:12:21In fact, he was in sixth place for a while,
00:12:23was doing a super time there,
00:12:24but ended up with tenth.
00:12:28Then David Coulthard.
00:12:29Well, David went out.
00:12:30He was still trying to get that elusive pole position
00:12:33away from Mika Hakkinen.
00:12:34He qualified third.
00:12:36Did a very, very smooth, splendid job.
00:12:38Johnny Herbert.
00:12:39Well, he didn't do too well in seventeenth,
00:12:41but Eddie Irvine, his teammate, did,
00:12:42and he qualified seventh.
00:12:46Heinz Auerfrenzen did another one of those splendid jobs.
00:12:49He qualified truly to get sixth place in the Jordan.
00:12:54And Michael Schumacher, well, with one minute thirty to go,
00:12:57he was out to try and get pole position, and he did.
00:13:00But, and the De Fossi went absolutely crazy.
00:13:03They are wild about Schumacher getting pole,
00:13:06but with just thirty seconds to go,
00:13:08it was this man yet again.
00:13:09Mika Hakkinen, he goes out,
00:13:11and he gets pole time.
00:13:12Can you believe it?
00:13:13His twenty-fourth pole.
00:13:14Let's hear what Schumacher said about that.
00:13:19I'm a little bit upset about myself,
00:13:21because I have made a very bad mistake in my third run.
00:13:24Being in the first row gives me some pleasure,
00:13:27but not the pleasure I was expecting
00:13:29and I was trying to give to all the De Fossis here
00:13:32and to the team, which worked fantastically.
00:13:35Rubens Barrichello is talking with Peter Windsor.
00:13:38That is qualifying.
00:13:40Last minute pressure lap, Rubens there.
00:13:42Fourth position on the grid initially.
00:13:44Tell us about the problems leading up to that lap
00:13:46and how good was the lap.
00:13:47Well, the lap was quite good.
00:13:48I had to back off a little bit for the yellow flags,
00:13:50even though my sector was faster.
00:13:52You know, I had to back off exactly there
00:13:54when I saw the yellow flags.
00:13:57It's just, I have a problem on the car
00:13:59that I cannot find it,
00:14:00and since this morning,
00:14:02it's like going fighting for the whole time.
00:14:06There's a bit of a struggle, really.
00:14:07Problems in qualifying,
00:14:08but let's hope it's good for the race for Rubens Barrichello.
00:14:10Back to you.
00:14:12Well, Derek, key points to look at for today's race.
00:14:14Well, a lot of people have gone for the softer tyre,
00:14:16but it's not necessarily the best choice.
00:14:18It was for qualifying.
00:14:19Engine lubrication seems to be a problem around here,
00:14:21and of course, inevitably, the famous brakes.
00:14:23They're very, very,
00:14:24I worked very hard here from 180 miles an hour.
00:14:28A look inside the cockpit of the Jordan
00:14:30and the steering wheel
00:14:31with all of the buttons and the display
00:14:34mounted on the steering wheel.
00:14:35There's no dashboards anymore on Formula One cars.
00:14:37Everything's contained right on the steering wheel.
00:14:40When our Mercedes-Benz pre-race continues,
00:14:42we'll have part one of our exclusive interview
00:14:45with the Schumacher brothers together.

00:15:34Max Mosley with Bernie Eccleston
00:15:37walking the Formula One grid,
00:15:41having a word here and there.
00:15:45Well, it seems rather amazing
00:15:47that Ralph and Michael Schumacher
00:15:48have never sat down together
00:15:50for a joint interview
00:15:51since they started racing.
00:15:53Well, now they have.
00:15:55Fox Sports Net and Peter Windsor's got them.
00:15:58So let's flash back to Melbourne.
00:16:00Parked firmly after the race.
00:16:01You're both in the first three again.
00:16:04What does it feel like
00:16:05when you get out of the car
00:16:06and you embrace one another
00:16:07and you both know you're going to be on the podium?
00:16:09Ralph, what's that like?
00:16:11It's always a nice feeling,
00:16:13especially when you know
00:16:14that both family members were in a good position
00:16:18and able to fulfil their targets for the weekend.
00:16:22Michael?
00:16:25I was very much surprised
00:16:26when the lap after the finish line,
00:16:30I saw this guy coming next to me
00:16:32and showing me third position.
00:16:35And obviously I was informed a little bit,
00:16:38but not totally whether he made it to the end or not.
00:16:41I think he thought three times left.
00:16:45So I was quite happy for this.
00:16:47It was a perfect combination
00:16:48because they didn't expect to be third.
00:16:51It was a good result for them.
00:16:52We won our race,
00:16:53which was a very good result for us.
00:16:55So all in all,
00:16:56it was a happy family atmosphere.
00:16:58And it really adds to the feeling of
00:17:00if you've won a race,
00:17:01if Ralph's done very well,
00:17:02it really adds to that feeling.
00:17:04It gives an extra pleasure, certainly.
00:17:06Going back to the early days, Ralph,
00:17:07obviously there's a bit of an age difference
00:17:09between the two.
00:17:10Was Michael very helpful to you when you first started?
00:17:15Be careful what you say.
00:17:18Well, actually, every time I had a question,
00:17:20he was able to help me with his experience.
00:17:23But at the end of the day,
00:17:24you sit there in the car
00:17:25and have to do the thing by yourself.
00:17:29The thing he was able to do,
00:17:31he always helped me,
00:17:32but it's a bit difficult, really.
00:17:35Do you think you would have raced
00:17:36if Michael hadn't been racing?
00:17:38I don't know.
00:17:39I haven't asked myself that question.
00:17:41I'm racing.
00:17:42It's difficult to ask this question, honestly.
00:17:45Is he a good learner?
00:17:49I'd say a difficult one
00:17:51because we spend a lot of time together in karting.
00:17:54I used to be his mechanic
00:17:56and I used to be quite often upset
00:17:59when he wasn't there helping me to clean the go-karts
00:18:02and running around with his friends
00:18:04and things like this.
00:18:05But he has developed
00:18:07and obviously matured a lot.
00:18:12But talking about learning,
00:18:13you see the results.
00:18:15You must say he did learn very well.
00:18:18Moving on to America now.
00:18:19You've both spent some time in America recently.
00:18:21I think you were in Utah
00:18:22and you were in Florida learning to fly.
00:18:25Do you enjoy America?
00:18:26It's a great country for us.
00:18:28We're obviously not known as much as we are in Europe,
00:18:32so we have quite a bit of freedom.
00:18:34We can do things.
00:18:36America has a lot of options
00:18:39where you can entertain yourself,
00:18:41so it's a very good country.
00:18:43Talking about that freedom question,
00:18:45do you ever wish that you were not as well-known as you are?
00:18:48Is that ever a hindrance for you in life?
00:18:51I came here for two days to go to Rio
00:18:54and I had the paparazzis and cameras following me everywhere.
00:18:59It was really...
00:19:01They were chasing me.
00:19:02You couldn't move without them
00:19:04and that was quite a pain.
00:19:06Ralph, you chose Florida to learn to fly.
00:19:08Why did you actually choose America?
00:19:11Basically, you have a stable weather condition
00:19:14at that time of the year
00:19:15and if you want to make your PPL
00:19:17in the shortest amount of time possible,
00:19:21you have to go to America.
00:19:22That was the reason why I went there.
00:19:24Are there any parts of America that you've not been to
00:19:26that you'd like to go to?
00:19:27Plenty.
00:19:29America's big.
00:19:30Nearly 90%, I'd say.
00:19:32You had a good time.
00:19:33You played cowboy for a while.
00:19:34Is that something you've always wanted to do?
00:19:37I made an adventure trip.
00:19:39The usual Marlboro adventure trip
00:19:41we did with some friends.
00:19:43That was a thing I wanted to do for a long time
00:19:46and we enjoyed it very much.
00:19:48We had a very good organisation down there
00:19:50which really gave us a huge pleasure.
00:19:55We're looking forward to organise
00:19:57more of these kind of things down there.
00:20:00How do you imagine this American Grand Prix in Indianapolis
00:20:02is going to be?
00:20:03Have you pictured it in your mind yet?
00:20:04All those people, that history in Indianapolis?
00:20:07I'm not pretty much aware of any history
00:20:09so to be honest, I go there totally open-minded.
00:20:13I just hope that we have a nice atmosphere,
00:20:15a lot of spectators
00:20:16and I hope that we bring Formula One
00:20:20back into that country
00:20:22into an acceptable state.
00:20:24I think that the Americans get the chance again
00:20:27to try and understand what Formula One is.
00:20:30And where's Europe?
00:20:32Exactly.
00:20:33It works both ways.
00:20:34But there is a lot of history there.
00:20:36You say you're not aware of history.
00:20:37Is that from childhood, even in normal history?
00:20:40You only think of the future and the present?
00:20:42Is that the way you live your life?
00:20:43I'm a person, I'm not very much interested in history.
00:20:45Maybe I shouldn't say that, but that's the way I am.
00:20:48I never took care for any history.
00:20:50I know Formula One since Michael does drive in Formula One.
00:20:52It's since 1990, not before.
00:20:55Would you say you're the same?
00:20:57Yeah, we are both the same
00:20:58because it depends on the parents,
00:21:00how they educate yourself.
00:21:02Our parents weren't interested in motor racing.
00:21:05It was not our father's idea to make racing drivers out of us.
00:21:10It just developed.
00:21:12If you don't live this life for a long time,
00:21:15you obviously don't look at it.
00:21:17You have your own interests.
00:21:18We played football,
00:21:19we did all normal things you do as a child,
00:21:22but we didn't care about Formula One at the stage.
00:21:24Because even in Germany,
00:21:25it wasn't a big deal, Formula One,
00:21:27at the time.
00:21:28So if I said to you,
00:21:30which American race driver do you most respect or admire,
00:21:33what would you say?
00:21:35Hmm.
00:21:36I mean, obviously we know through Indy,
00:21:39we know a couple of guys who've raced down there.
00:21:42But if you would ask me about NASCAR,
00:21:44I couldn't tell you any names, honestly.
00:21:46There's two brothers in NASCAR racing, actually,
00:21:47Terry and Bobby Labonde.
00:21:49It's about the only other two brothers
00:21:50that race successfully at a reasonably high level in motorsport.
00:21:53Interesting.
00:21:54Okay, what about outside motor racing?
00:21:56If I said,
00:21:57what American sports star do you most admire?
00:22:01Michael Jordan, I would say.
00:22:03Yeah, I would say the same, actually.
00:22:05I mean, basketball is a big thing in America.
00:22:07Football comes along now.
00:22:11When you say football, do you mean soccer?
00:22:13I mean soccer.
00:22:14So yeah, soccer is coming along.
00:22:16We say football in the direct translation.
00:22:18But football is a big thing in America too,
00:22:20but I don't know anything about that.
00:22:24If neither of you were racing drivers,
00:22:26what other profession do you think you could have successfully handled?
00:22:30Both.
00:22:31If you wouldn't be a commentator, what would you do?
00:22:33You know?
00:22:34I don't know.
00:22:35I'm not asking the question.
00:22:36You've never thought of that?
00:22:37It's not something that...
00:22:38I mean, I started motor racing,
00:22:40well, I started karting two and a half, three years, I think.
00:22:43It was my first time that I was sitting in a kart,
00:22:46and since then I didn't do anything else.
00:22:49I haven't thought about anything else.
00:22:51Well, let's just talk about that.
00:22:52There are two guys from the middle of Germany,
00:22:54shall we say, somewhere in Germany,
00:22:56who have become, obviously, a dynasty now in Formula 1,
00:23:00and Formula 1 is a huge worldwide sport.
00:23:03When you go back home, do you ever think,
00:23:05how did this happen?
00:23:06Isn't it amazing that it is like this?
00:23:13We don't go often home, honestly.
00:23:15First of all, because we live our life out of Germany.
00:23:20But, I mean, if...
00:23:22Sometimes we may talk with our parents about this,
00:23:25or we talk with friends about this,
00:23:26but if you don't do that,
00:23:27you don't think that way, honestly.
00:23:29I mean, when you go back home,
00:23:31you don't feel like you are Michael Schumacher,
00:23:34what people think who is Michael Schumacher.
00:23:37You're simply yourself.
00:23:38You go home, and you behave normally.
00:23:40I mean, I have my family,
00:23:41and they don't care who is Michael Schumacher
00:23:44in his job, in his racing car.
00:23:47We'll have part two of the exclusive joint interview
00:23:50with Michael and Ralph Schumacher
00:23:51coming up at the Grand Prix of Britain
00:23:53in two weeks' time.
00:23:59Rick Rubens, sitting there,
00:24:01getting ready to get into his car.
00:24:03He's getting his earplugs in,
00:24:05and, obviously, then he's got to wire everything up,
00:24:08because they have this heads-up display in their helmet now,
00:24:11so there's more wires than ever to click on.
00:24:14And Mika Hakkinen hoping to score his first points
00:24:17of the year 2000.
00:24:19He'll start from the pole.
00:24:21We'll be back with the starting grid
00:24:23and the start of the Grand Prix of San Marino.
00:24:35Welcome back to our Fox Sportsnet coverage
00:24:37of the Grand Prix of San Marino.
00:24:39You are looking over the top of Rubens Barrichello
00:24:42from atop the roll bar on his Ferrari,
00:24:44starting fourth, Michael Schumacher just ahead.
00:24:4764 degrees today.
00:24:49Track temperature slightly warmer.
00:24:51Humidity is moderate, little chance of rain
00:24:54as we get set for the start.
00:25:04As the formation lap begins,
00:25:06let's have a look at the Mercedes-Benz starting grid
00:25:08for the Grand Prix of San Marino today.
00:25:13On pole is Mika Hakkinen from McLaren Mercedes
00:25:15with his 24th career pole.
00:25:18And Michael Schumacher would have been on pole, he says,
00:25:20but for a mistake at Revazza.
00:25:22David Coulthard also ran wide at Revazza,
00:25:25and he will start third in his McLaren.
00:25:27And yellow flags destroyed Rubens Barrichello's last run.
00:25:31Ralf Schumacher with the Williams BMW
00:25:33said his car was perfect to line up fifth.
00:25:35And the Heinz-Johann French said,
00:25:36I'm sorry, but I'm where I thought.
00:25:39Eddie Irvine thought he lost about three-tenths of a second
00:25:42running wide, coming off the corner, so he'll be seventh.
00:25:45And Jarno Trulli was bought by traffic,
00:25:47and then he had yellow flags.
00:25:49Jacques Villeneuve will line up ninth.
00:25:51It's his birthday today, and he paid the price
00:25:53for losing the Friday practice session.
00:25:56And Pedredin is very happy to be in the top ten.
00:25:59Eleventh will be the Benetton of Alexander Wurz,
00:26:02who struggled for grip through the whole session.
00:26:04Mika Sala, well, he said he's been hitting the kerbs too hard
00:26:07to modify things.
00:26:09Arrows disappointed not to be in the top ten,
00:26:11but Pedro de la Rosa, thirteenth,
00:26:13is just one-tenth of a second away from tenth.
00:26:16Riccardo Zonta for VAR starts alongside.
00:26:19John Alessi had gear change problems in his process.
00:26:22He'll be fifteenth.
00:26:23And Jos Verstappen had a problem with the right rear,
00:26:26a low drag setup.
00:26:28Gave him no grip in the corners.
00:26:30Johnny Herbert cracked an exhaust header in his Jaguar
00:26:33and lost power all through the qualifying session.
00:26:35While Jenson Button struggles for the first time this season,
00:26:38he's having trouble using the curbing here
00:26:40to maximum effect.
00:26:42Giancarlo Fisichella is way down the grid in nineteenth,
00:26:45made the wrong choice of tires for qualifying
00:26:47with his Benetton.
00:26:49And the Minardi, Matsukane, the long uphill,
00:26:52showed the Minardi's lack of power.
00:26:54And Marc Genet started the session in the T-car,
00:26:57but had to finish qualifying in Matsukane's car
00:27:00because the T-car broke on its first lap.
00:27:02Nick Heidfeld also was forced into the spare prost,
00:27:05which was not set up for him.
00:27:07And that's why he is twenty-second and last on the grid.
00:27:10Last on the grid.
00:27:11And we just saw his car being wheeled away,
00:27:13and they're trying to start it in the pit lane,
00:27:15so he'll have to start last anyway,
00:27:16which is very sad for Nick.
00:27:17He's had a pretty lurid weekend with all sorts of problems
00:27:20yesterday in qualifying,
00:27:21when he had to take the spare out,
00:27:23and the spare wasn't set up for him.
00:27:24So, one way or another, it's been pretty awful.
00:27:27Well, the screws of the vice are beginning to turn on Mika Hakkinen,
00:27:30the defending twice world champion.
00:27:32But, it is not unprecedented a driver should win the title
00:27:35after scoring no points in the first two races.
00:27:38Ascari did it in 52,
00:27:40Jack Brabham in 1960,
00:27:42and Jochen Rindt started the season with no points
00:27:45in the first two races in 1970,
00:27:48and was declared world champion.
00:27:52You just watched the start,
00:27:53and it'd be interesting just to see how many of these cars
00:27:55actually leave black tire marks behind them
00:27:57and smoke pouring off the back,
00:27:58which is one of the big bones of contention
00:28:00for the future regulations.
00:28:04Of course, they line up at turn one exceedingly fast,
00:28:07and it's going to be quite tricky for people
00:28:09to get into this corner neatly and tidily.
00:28:11Let's hope it's clean.
00:28:14There are the lights getting set for the start
00:28:16of the Grand Prix of San Marino.
00:28:22Oh, the slammer went away.
00:28:23Can't say that...
00:28:24Oh, and look,
00:28:25well, Schumacher came round there very, very well indeed.
00:28:28Whoa!
00:28:29Mika Hakkinen is well away.
00:28:31Watch it, boys.
00:28:32And Ferrari, second into turn two.
00:28:36So far, it's clean.
00:28:41And both the Ferraris put David Coulthard on the start.
00:28:43We saw a lot of tire smoke
00:28:45and a lot of wheelspin off the start.
00:28:47But not much, of course, off the McLarens, I have to say,
00:28:50which is rather sad,
00:28:51considering the problems of the last race.
00:28:53Oh, the two Jordans having a very close coming together there.
00:28:56That would have been disaster for Eddie Jordan
00:28:58if they hadn't done something silly.
00:29:00And we saw the left front lock up on Ralf Schumacher's Williams
00:29:04going into that last corner.
00:29:07And I don't believe Nick Hydeville has made it out of the pits.
00:29:11Now we're going to see just what part,
00:29:13what sort of fuel levels these guys are running,
00:29:16what strategies they're on.
00:29:17We do happen to know that Hakkinen is on a softer tire,
00:29:20so there's a fair chance that he will get away at the start.
00:29:22Schumacher and Coulthard and Barry Keller
00:29:24are all on the medium, the harder type of rubber.
00:29:27That is why they possibly didn't qualify as well,
00:29:29but we do know that the softer tire
00:29:32does give you a little deflection
00:29:33with the steering and the handling of the car,
00:29:35and the drivers don't like it.
00:29:36The medium compound takes a little longer to come in,
00:29:39but has more durability.
00:29:42And now Nick Hydeville has finally started from the pit lane
00:29:45and moved on.
00:29:46We saw Johnny Herbert getting passed there by,
00:29:49I'm not sure if it was Mazzuccani or Genet,
00:29:51one of the minorities, going past Herbert.
00:29:53Right there, toward the back.
00:29:58And there's Hydeville.
00:30:00Villeneuve's had a great start, up into fifth place.
00:30:04There was a lot of battling going on there.
00:30:09Well, Villeneuve started ninth,
00:30:11and to gain four positions from the start,
00:30:13that's pretty quick.
00:30:14Well, you can do that,
00:30:15because the guys are all going down one side to block each other,
00:30:17and you just quite casually go around the outside.
00:30:19Casually probably isn't quite the right word for Jack's moves,
00:30:22but it certainly is, it figures out what goes on.
00:30:26Villeneuve in front of the two Jordans in yellow.
00:30:32There's some very, very high speed already,
00:30:34three seconds between Schumacher and Barry Keller,
00:30:36which isn't so bad.
00:30:37I'm sure Barry Keller would like to be behind Michael,
00:30:39but he hasn't been that competitive all weekend,
00:30:42or he did a good qualifying,
00:30:44but he hasn't been happy with his setup all weekend,
00:30:46has Barry Keller.
00:30:53There are the gaps through positions,
00:30:55and there's Keller, all but tail-end Charlie.
00:30:58It's only Mazzucati and Haidt who started from the pits behind him.
00:31:01Let's have another look at the start, here.
00:31:04Yeah, well, look at the Ferraris' wheels, great traction.
00:31:06Schumacher goes across.
00:31:08Look at that, there's a real lot of blocking off going on there,
00:31:11as they came through the two Ferraris,
00:31:13trying to hold the McLaren off.
00:31:16Oh, what a move by Barry Keller,
00:31:18almost locking wheels with Coulthard, there.
00:31:20Very, very close, indeed.
00:31:21They were talking, Michael Schumacher was saying,
00:31:23oh, he's a bit concerned about the safety of open-wheel cars,
00:31:26and how they could catapult into the crowd.
00:31:28Thank goodness it's never happened,
00:31:30but we're always concerned about it.
00:31:32And you saw in that long run down to Turn 1,
00:31:35how Jacques Villeneuve got a great start,
00:31:37and as you said, an open lane to the outside,
00:31:39nipped to the inside,
00:31:41and was right up on the tail of the two Ferraris,
00:31:43entering that first corner.
00:31:46It's a great start for Villeneuve, there are the Jordans,
00:31:48there's Eddie Irvine.
00:31:52And look at the top of the screen,
00:31:53Fisichella in blue, just ahead of Matsukane.
00:31:55Of course, he started way back in 19th,
00:31:58after having problems in qualifying,
00:32:00but has been unable to advance on the start.
00:32:09Quite a con, and off is one of the Minardis,
00:32:12that is Matsukane.
00:32:14Now, only Heitfeld is behind him,
00:32:17on the racetrack, well behind,
00:32:19after starting from the pit lane.
00:32:21Here he goes, whoops, whoops, really,
00:32:24yes, he came, he had a lot of problems there,
00:32:26as he came to the first part of the corner,
00:32:28and that really put him out for the second,
00:32:30and that was it.
00:32:35Trying to get him refired,
00:32:36yellow flags waving out, here comes Heitfeld.
00:32:38One assumes he's got his engine running,
00:32:40but he hasn't got any reverse gear.
00:32:42I think he might have just stalled it.
00:32:46He can't get any, oh, he has, he's got a gear.
00:32:48He found neutral, that's how they pushed him back,
00:32:50but he couldn't find reverse.
00:32:52And there must be a very fine gear in reverse,
00:32:54you don't want to be silly and engage it,
00:32:56and destroy the clutch by slipping it to get it in.
00:32:58So he's out of the sand trap in three,
00:33:00and now we'll have another opportunity.
00:33:13A lot of wheel lock up there on one of the arrows.
00:33:18And you see now that
00:33:20Fisichella has made a little bit of gains.
00:33:22From Rubens, Barrichello, look at the start,
00:33:24and Schumacher slices to the left.
00:33:27And then David Piculta goes to pull out,
00:33:29around Michael, but Barrichello is in his mirror,
00:33:31and Michael was very, sorry, should I say David,
00:33:33was very, very clever there.
00:33:35Barrichello doesn't give him much room either,
00:33:37as we said just now.
00:33:39But Barrichello can see him,
00:33:40and he's got a very full vision,
00:33:42and he just didn't give him any quarter whatsoever.
00:33:44And you saw him really fighting the steering wheel
00:33:46on tyres that are probably not yet up to racing temperature,
00:33:49even after the reconnaissance laps and the formation lap.
00:33:53Look, Rubens is obviously holding up David,
00:33:56but they're not holding up anybody behind,
00:33:58it just shows the quality of those two drivers,
00:34:01Hacken and Schumacher up front,
00:34:02just how they can get away,
00:34:04and they actually seem to be in a class of their own.
00:34:08Katie Irvine giving good pace.
00:34:10Working heights, Harold Frentzen.
00:34:17Ooh, good little move there.
00:34:20That should be Zonta moving, is that Zonta moving?
00:34:31Tamika Hacken leads Michael Schumacher's Ferrari,
00:34:34Barrichello's Ferrari,
00:34:35Coulthard's McLaren,
00:34:37Villeneuve's BAR.
00:34:39We'll be right back.
00:34:44Hacken is on the softer compound,
00:34:46the engine to see just whether he can persist with that.
00:34:50Problems for Fisichella,
00:34:51he has lost a position to Johnny Herbert,
00:34:53and it just dropped well, well off pace.
00:34:56Well, he's on the harder of the compounds,
00:34:58and he sort of blamed that on the fact
00:34:59that he didn't do that well in qualifying,
00:35:01but to be that far down on the grid in 19th place,
00:35:04really is a poor excuse for Taj.
00:35:06You can't blame him for everything.
00:35:07There's one of the Minardis off in the kitty litter.
00:35:09Well, is that Matsukane again reaching for the sand wedge?
00:35:12Nope, Marc Genet this time.
00:35:14Here he comes, he loses it.
00:35:16Ooh, really well in there, and deep.
00:35:18Yeah, that's buried.
00:35:22So not a great day for Minardi.
00:35:24Schumacher hanging in there with Tamika Hacken,
00:35:27and right now...
00:35:30We will see both these drivers
00:35:33absolutely at their best today.
00:35:35Hacken, desperate to get some points on the agenda,
00:35:38and of course, Schumacher, desperate to get points
00:35:41to continue his 20-point lead.
00:35:43Oh, there looks like...
00:35:45Is that one of the Williams?
00:35:46Yes, it is.
00:35:47It's Jenson Button,
00:35:48who has struggled with the curbings all weekend,
00:35:50how to use them for maximum effect
00:35:52without bouncing the cars off them.
00:35:54And the talented 20-year-old is out of this race.
00:35:58I tell you, it looked like,
00:36:00I wouldn't say it did,
00:36:01but it looked like he went off
00:36:02while the other car was being loaded onto the hall.
00:36:04They were lifting up the Minardi to take it away,
00:36:06and Jenson shot across the kitty litter right behind him.
00:36:09His locked-up marks came right through behind that truck,
00:36:12which could have been very, very dangerous.
00:36:14So one would have to say that he possibly didn't slow down
00:36:17the way he should have done for that corner,
00:36:19or else it distracted him as he came in the corner.
00:36:22He took his mind off what he was doing,
00:36:24locked everything up and went off the road.
00:36:27You're riding with Barrichello.
00:36:31And there's the gap he has on David Coulthard.
00:36:34That's third to fourth place.
00:36:45180 miles an hour as they come down to Rivazza.
00:36:49Second gear.
00:36:53Second gear again.
00:36:57And it's reported that Frentzen's Jordan,
00:36:59Frentzen the 97 winner here at Imola,
00:37:01out of the race with gearbox problems.
00:37:13Really like the way that Italian television
00:37:15makes use of that helicopter camera
00:37:17to follow the cars around this course.
00:37:19Yes, it gives you a very good aspect of this delightful track.
00:37:22It really is a beautifully laid-out circuit.
00:37:25They've been racing there for many, many years.
00:37:27In fact, this is the 21st Grand Prix to be held at Imola.
00:37:3019 San Marino Grand Prixs.
00:37:32And there we go, the Jensen.
00:37:33Ah, they were involved.
00:37:34Jensen Button was involved.
00:37:36That is why we saw the yellow car,
00:37:38the Minardi of Genet off at the same time.
00:37:41And that would have been a pass for 18th position.
00:37:49Pretty desperate path by the look of it.
00:37:51Yes.
00:37:53You should see how Jensen Button goes
00:37:55to the British Grand Prix in two weeks' time,
00:37:57which of course is a circuit he knows extremely well,
00:37:59one that he was virtually weaned on.
00:38:05There is Coulthard in fourth place
00:38:07behind the Ferrari of Barrichello.
00:38:09And you see how wide they run off the corners here
00:38:11and just how much of that curbing
00:38:13they use both at entrance and exit of these corners.
00:38:16Both these cars are on the medium compound tyre.
00:38:20The harder of the two they're using today.
00:38:22As I pointed out before,
00:38:23Hakkinen is on the softer compound
00:38:25and Schumacher is himself on the harder compound as well.
00:38:29And there's the gap, 1.3 seconds.
00:38:33Which might be indicative of the choice of tyres,
00:38:36but Derek, I think it would seem
00:38:38to show that they're probably running
00:38:40comparable fuel loads.
00:38:41You would think so.
00:38:43I mean, I'm sure, I hope so,
00:38:44for the benefit of our race.
00:38:45I hope that they're both running the same fuel loads.
00:38:47But if you're on the softer tyre,
00:38:49they were concerned about the degradation,
00:38:51how the tyre was crumbling after a long period.
00:38:54But we do know that that McLaren
00:38:56does have the most phenomenal sort of balance,
00:38:59control over the chassis.
00:39:01And they don't seem to get the tyre wear
00:39:02that the other cars do.
00:39:06Jenson Button has come back to the pit lane
00:39:09and reports engine problems
00:39:12for what put him out
00:39:14as he was attempting to make the pass on Marc Genet.
00:39:16Genet spinning also.
00:39:18Well, you do get problems
00:39:19when you go into the chassis lift at that speed.
00:39:21It does slow your engine down a bit.
00:39:23No amount of electronic timing gear
00:39:26would get you out of that one.
00:39:27Nope, not at all.
00:39:30So here's Maricalo leading Coulthard.
00:39:32Coulthard who had one of the finest drives
00:39:34of his career two weeks ago in Brazil
00:39:36and has nothing to show for it
00:39:38as a result of the disqualification.
00:39:40And McLaren has shrouded their cars
00:39:43in secrecy this weekend.
00:39:44They put big gates in front of their garage
00:39:48to block the view of anyone who would stroll past.
00:39:51They had covers to put over the entire front wing
00:39:55any time the car was stopped.
00:39:57And even this morning on the grid,
00:40:00after the reconnaissance and formation laps,
00:40:02they put a big cover over the entire front of the car
00:40:05from the front wheels forward
00:40:07to keep prying eyes away.
00:40:09Are they getting a little paranoid
00:40:11after two races with no points perhaps?
00:40:13Well, they must be getting a bit nervous about it.
00:40:15There's a lot of people at Mercedes.
00:40:16I read that saying on the board meeting on a Monday morning.
00:40:18What's happening, lads?
00:40:20We want to know.
00:40:25But they'll come back.
00:40:26I mean, they're a very, very strong team.
00:40:28It's only two races,
00:40:29but it is astonishing
00:40:30that they haven't got points from either race.
00:40:32You'd think one of the cars
00:40:33would have picked up some points somewhere.
00:40:38But at Émile, Williams with seven wins.
00:40:41McLaren has six.
00:40:43And Ferrari, three victories and five seconds.
00:40:46So McLaren has been quite successful on this circuit.
00:40:54De La Rosa and Alessi for 13th position.
00:40:58The computer shows four-tenths of a second apart,
00:41:01but that's just a mere car length or two
00:41:03at most places around the circuit.
00:41:12De La Rosa, 13th in qualifying,
00:41:14but again, he was just a tenth of a second out of the top ten.
00:41:17So Arrows looking for their best result of the season today.
00:41:23Coming up on Mazzucati,
00:41:26in the remaining minority,
00:41:28is leader Mika Haakon in there in the McLaren
00:41:30and Michael Schumacher.
00:41:33And Mika's adding a tenth or half a tenth
00:41:37per lap to that lead.
00:41:39Certainly not running away from Michael Schumacher.
00:41:43But Michael is not exactly tight in his draft either.
00:41:47No, this is going to slow Mika down just a little bit.
00:41:53And this is the pass on De La Rosa.
00:41:58Mika was held up just a little bit there, I'd say.
00:42:01Now Michael's going to have to contend with him
00:42:03coming over the brow.
00:42:05As he sweeps down towards Akron, where are we?
00:42:08The minority stayed way off line,
00:42:10so Schumacher was the beneficiary that time.
00:42:20Ooh, locking up brakes.
00:42:22Actually got him right on line.
00:42:24That's a very, very fine bit of driving there,
00:42:26one has to say.
00:42:28That was Riccardo Zonto for BAR.
00:42:31Well, there is your lead.
00:42:32Haakonen from Schumacher, McLaren from Ferrari.
00:42:36The Ferrari of Barrichello and the McLaren of Coulthard
00:42:39with Villeneuve fifth.
00:42:41We'll be right back.
00:42:45Welcome back to San Marino.
00:42:46The tenth place car of Josper Stappen has come to the pits
00:42:49after just having been overtaken.
00:42:51And it appears there's a problem with the right front suspension.
00:42:56Remember, was it Australia where the arrows were forced out
00:42:59with the suspension, which was a failure?
00:43:02Massive failure, that was.
00:43:04Where the carbon fiber arm was joined to the metal suspension joint
00:43:10was the problem that put them out.
00:43:13Not sure if this is the same, but the mechanics continue to work
00:43:16on the right front of his car.
00:43:18But he did slow down for quite a lot on that last lap,
00:43:20and was passed by several cars as he came in,
00:43:22so he obviously does have more than a fuel problem.
00:43:27Mika Haakonen has led from the pole,
00:43:29Michael Schumacher second, Rubens Barrichello overtook
00:43:32David Coulthard on the run to turn one, lap one.
00:43:35So the Ferraris sit second and third
00:43:37in the midst of a McLaren sandwich, first and fourth.
00:43:45Fox Sports News tonight at 10 p.m.
00:43:47Get all the news right here on your Fox Sportsnet affiliate.
00:43:5110 p.m. your local time for Fox Sports News.
00:43:55OK, it was Jost Verstappen did have suspension trouble,
00:43:59and we're going to have to see just what happens there.
00:44:03Yeah, they sent him back out.
00:44:05They sent him back out, so he can't be that bad then,
00:44:07but he probably just adjusted something.
00:44:09He probably didn't like the feel of the car.
00:44:11It was feeling nervous somewhere, and at these speeds,
00:44:13180 mile an hour, four times a lap,
00:44:15you need to go and check on suspension, things like that.
00:44:19Well, we're starting out, Derek, right where we started.
00:44:22Well, we're starting out, Derek, right where we started in Brazil
00:44:25with HÃ¥konen leading from the pole.
00:44:27The question today is, for how long?
00:44:29For how long can he stay out on this tank of fuel?
00:44:32How long can the tires last? We just don't know.
00:44:34These are questions that are only asked race by race,
00:44:37and we're all told what strategies these guys are on,
00:44:40and it never pans out the way we've been told.
00:44:44Interesting to note here in Imola
00:44:46that the cars that are sponsored by cigarette brands,
00:44:49and there are many in Formula 1,
00:44:51are running their branded signage.
00:44:53There's the Benson & Hedgens Jordan,
00:44:55the West McLaren Mercedes,
00:44:57and you saw the Marlboro Ferrari.
00:44:59But if you look at the signs around the circuit,
00:45:01they are the signs that are used in the European countries like that, see?
00:45:06Where the cigarette advertising is banned.
00:45:08So, kind of a contradiction here.
00:45:10Signage on the cars and not on the circuit.
00:45:12So, how do they do it then, Mike?
00:45:14Well, I don't know, but I know Peter does.
00:45:17So, let's go back to the pit lane,
00:45:19and the London Sunday Times' Peter Windsor.
00:45:21Peter, what's up with the signage versus the cars?
00:45:24Yes, eagle-eyed observers may notice
00:45:26that we have Marlboro on the Ferraris,
00:45:28but around the circuit, we don't have the Marlboro.
00:45:30We have the standard non-tobacco Philip Morris advertising.
00:45:33Well, there's an Italian reason for that.
00:45:35There is a taxman now that comes around to the teams,
00:45:38and he says,
00:45:39If they want to have a tobacco sponsor on their car for the race,
00:45:42they pay a fine, and they keep it on the car.
00:45:44But I would suspect that the circuit organizers, however,
00:45:46are unwilling to pay that fine.
00:45:48So, it's purely a commercial reason there,
00:45:50and it can only happen in Italy.
00:45:52They probably go and have a wonderful lunch
00:45:54with the best quality wine you can imagine,
00:45:56a beautiful tutorial somewhere in the hills.
00:45:58Well, that's the answer.
00:46:00And third and fourth continues to be closely contested.
00:46:04Barrichello and Koolhaas,
00:46:07Barrichello and Koolhaas,
00:46:09neither of whom score any points in Brazil.
00:46:13The handling of that McLaren really catches up Rubens
00:46:16as he comes through the chicanes,
00:46:18but Rubens seems to have the power.
00:46:20He has to get the power down out of the corners
00:46:22as we ride with Rubens.
00:46:24And he scores!
00:46:35If that camera had been pointed out the back,
00:46:37you'd see a mouthful of McLaren.
00:46:42Well, Villeneuve's having a really good dice back,
00:46:44just behind him, with Trulli and Irvine
00:46:46and Ralf Schumacher and Sala.
00:46:48They're really fairly close together,
00:46:50having a good old punch-out back there.
00:46:52Jack Villeneuve doing so well.
00:46:54The car really has been transformed this year,
00:46:56and, of course, running those engines
00:46:58has certainly helped them.
00:47:00Dan Knudsen, who's our statistician
00:47:02down in the pits with Peter,
00:47:04said that when Villeneuve climbed into his car
00:47:06for the warm-up this morning,
00:47:08all the electronics lit up happy birthday,
00:47:10rather than, you know, RPM, oil temperature,
00:47:12water temperature, etc.
00:47:14So the computer boys have been having a little fun
00:47:16at BAR and also...
00:47:18Did I mention happy birthday to Peter Windsor this week as well?
00:47:20You did indeed.
00:47:22Well, that's twice. That's all you get, Peter.
00:47:24I hope it was in English for Jacques,
00:47:26because if the Honda engineers got there,
00:47:28it could well have been in Japanese.
00:47:30Right.
00:47:32This is great for Honda, that their engines
00:47:34are running so strong.
00:47:36Remember, they run with the Mugen Honda
00:47:38in the Jordans, but that's slightly different.
00:47:40It's a different part of the same family.
00:47:42But it's the first time Honda really
00:47:44been back for a few years,
00:47:46and they're running with BAR.
00:47:48So, Derek, about just the situation,
00:47:50you see the difference between the Ferrari and the McLaren,
00:47:52and you see how it closes up in the corners,
00:47:54and it gives the appearance
00:47:56that Coulthard is closing up on
00:47:58Barrichello under braking.
00:48:00We had an email from a fan who noticed that
00:48:02even though the distance closes up,
00:48:04because the speed is slower in the corner,
00:48:06the time distance
00:48:08between the cars
00:48:10is pretty much the same in the corner
00:48:12as it is down the straightaway. Interesting concept.
00:48:14Haven't tested it with a stopwatch,
00:48:16but I suspect there's a fair bit
00:48:18of fact to that. Well, I admire people
00:48:20that have that sort of brain that can work on that.
00:48:22I just look at it and say, boy, he's catching up,
00:48:24and now he's accelerating, and that's what I've done
00:48:26for 30 years of racing.
00:48:28And I'll tell you, when you're in that second car,
00:48:30doesn't it feel like you're catching up?
00:48:32Oh, it's brilliant. Absolutely wonderful.
00:48:34It's funny, I don't seem to get the power as well
00:48:36as we hit the straight. Right.
00:48:40All right, Mika Hakkinen has led
00:48:42from the pole over Michael Schumacher.
00:48:44Ferrachello has come from 4th to 3rd,
00:48:46displacing Coulthard.
00:48:48Jacques Villeneuve and Jarno Trulli.
00:48:50We'll be right back.
00:48:52Welcome back to the Grand Prix
00:48:54of San Marino. Mike Joy with Derek Bell
00:48:56and Peter Windsor.
00:48:58And Jacques Villeneuve
00:49:00almost got a birthday present from Jarno Trulli.
00:49:02Trulli was all over him
00:49:04two corners ago.
00:49:06Almost was able to make a successful pass there
00:49:08for 5th place, and right behind Trulli is
00:49:10Eddie Irvine, Ralph Schumacher, and Mika Salo.
00:49:12This is quite a little punch-up going on
00:49:14and I must say Trulli was
00:49:16right there, right alongside Jacques just now
00:49:18but probably overcooked it
00:49:20and has had to back out.
00:49:26Just about a second apart, there's Irvine and the Green Jaguar
00:49:28at the top of the screen.
00:49:30Yeah, the Jag going extremely
00:49:32well this weekend so far,
00:49:34because Eddie, as you know, went off the road
00:49:36at the last race in Brazil,
00:49:38which is a great pity. We never saw the true potential
00:49:40of it. Qualified again this weekend
00:49:42well, 7th place.
00:49:48And you're with Jarno Trulli.
00:50:02Remember, Trulli is running
00:50:04with the Mugen Honda engine and Jacques Villeneuve
00:50:06with the Honda engine, so that is quite interesting
00:50:08to see just how they map out.
00:50:10And the Jag engine,
00:50:12very close behind.
00:50:18In two weeks' time, don't forget, we'll be at Silverstone
00:50:20for the British Grand Prix
00:50:22on Fox Sportsnet
00:50:24with Part 2 of our
00:50:26Schumacher brothers' interview.
00:50:28Peter, sit down with
00:50:30Ralph and Michael. First time that's ever
00:50:32happened, and you'll hear the second part of it.
00:50:34I think, in what we've seen, Derek,
00:50:36you both came off as being really quite modest.
00:50:38I thought so, yeah.
00:50:40Not the arrogant way that we're led to believe
00:50:42by the media. Well, I think
00:50:44folks have to understand that when someone walks up
00:50:46with a pencil and pad or a microphone and shoves it
00:50:48in one's face, oftentimes
00:50:50you're going to get an off-the-cuff answer.
00:50:52Sometimes, maybe that
00:50:54looks like, sounds like, borders on
00:50:56arrogance. Uh-oh, was that
00:50:58problems for Trulli, or was that
00:51:00Mazzocconi being
00:51:02overlapped? No, I think the fact is, it's not just
00:51:04autograph they're asked for, it's 10,000.
00:51:06I think Michael explained it, and I saw it at the
00:51:08big Ferrari event in
00:51:10Rome some years ago, three years ago
00:51:12at the 50th anniversary. He is just not left alone.
00:51:14He's surrounded by people the whole time,
00:51:16and in the end, you just haven't got time
00:51:18to sign everybody's autograph.
00:51:20There's millions and millions of people out there.
00:51:26Somebody's setting up in the pits there
00:51:28for a stop.
00:51:30That's Prost.
00:51:32He's set up, and Jean
00:51:34Alessi is in.
00:51:36Alessi was running in 12th
00:51:38place.
00:51:42About 20 laps.
00:51:44Will this be a little
00:51:46early for two-stop? I guess it depends on the fuel
00:51:48load they started with.
00:51:50I think for them, it's been quite difficult to get any pit
00:51:52stops in this year, so I think we're quite relieved
00:51:54to make a pit stop. Let's make it early, just
00:51:56to prove we can change wheels.
00:51:58Eight and a half seconds for Jean Alessi.
00:52:03Hackerman just
00:52:05eking out a little bit on Michael Schumacher
00:52:07there. We feel
00:52:09that possibly these two are on, well, pretty
00:52:11logical, I suppose. These two are both on two-stop
00:52:13strategies. That's why they're
00:52:15going away the way they are. Can't quite
00:52:17understand how these tyres, this
00:52:19stiffer tyre, the harder tyre
00:52:21isn't working better for Schumacher as the fuel
00:52:23load goes off. Maybe it will
00:52:25in the last few laps. Maybe he's been saving
00:52:27the tyres. He's in here, but he is
00:52:29three seconds behind. And that's the largest
00:52:31lead of the day for Mika Hackerman.
00:52:34Well, we're past the point we were
00:52:36in Brazil, and there you see a ten-second
00:52:38stop-and-go penalty for Nick Heidfeld.
00:52:42He will serve.
00:52:45So he has to go into his pit,
00:52:47and they will hold him there for ten seconds.
00:52:49Well, Nick just is not having the luck this year.
00:52:51When you think he was the
00:52:53European former 3000 champion
00:52:55last year, runner-up the year before,
00:52:57the McLaren test driver, and basically
00:52:59loaned to Prost to do the
00:53:01development and work with this team, with the
00:53:03Prost team, with a view, I believe, to
00:53:05Prost having McLaren engines next year, but
00:53:07poor old Nick is not having the brakes
00:53:09that I had hoped he would get.
00:53:14Well, the lead is stabilised at three seconds
00:53:16now for Hackerman.
00:53:30Ralph Schumacher.
00:53:38Ralph rather confidently picked his
00:53:40brother Michael to win the title.
00:53:42I think he's obliged.
00:53:44Well, I certainly don't think he'll pick anybody else.
00:53:46No, I don't think so.
00:53:48Oh, they're all having a really good go.
00:53:50Look at Ralph. Woo-hoo!
00:53:52Dips out is Eddie Irvine. Was that Eddie Irvine
00:53:54slowing down, or was it Johnny Herbert?
00:53:56It was certainly one of the Jags.
00:53:58He slowed down.
00:54:06I think that was Eddie, who is slipping
00:54:08back a bit. Suddenly slipped back.
00:54:10He was right in the middle of that melee.
00:54:12He's down to ninth position,
00:54:14so it is Eddie that is dropping back.
00:54:29Woo-hoo!
00:54:35I have a feeling David Coulthard
00:54:37could be just a tad frustrated with this,
00:54:39because I'm sure that if David
00:54:41could only get by, but David, this is a story.
00:54:43Last year he complained
00:54:45the whole way through the race about people
00:54:47getting in his way, wouldn't let him go through.
00:54:49Today he's got Rubens Barrichello.
00:54:51Of course, they're driving an immaculate race,
00:54:53but there is no room to get by.
00:54:55They cannot have the speed on the straight.
00:54:57You can get that close behind in the fast corners
00:54:59because of turbulence, and therefore
00:55:01you can't be that close behind the guy braking
00:55:03for the next one.
00:55:05It's interesting as we're setting up
00:55:07for pit stops,
00:55:09and I think that's Nick Heidfeld coming in
00:55:11to serve his penalty. You see in the lower right
00:55:13of your screen that Jaguar is ready,
00:55:15and I would expect for Irvine.
00:55:19And Jost Verstappen
00:55:21has received a penalty for blocking.
00:55:24So the stewards are having a busy day.
00:55:28The wing disqualification,
00:55:30or the ride height disqualification,
00:55:32was actually a pool card.
00:55:34Why did McLaren lose on the appeal?
00:55:36Why did Ferrari prevail last season?
00:55:39In Malaysia, Ferrari
00:55:41was allowed to leave the circuit
00:55:43with their parts
00:55:45and their car,
00:55:47have a week or so
00:55:49to work up their defense and come in
00:55:51and present to the FIA
00:55:53that the parts were
00:55:55improperly measured in Malaysia.
00:55:57Well, the FIA over the
00:55:59winner met and decided
00:56:01to prevent a recurrence.
00:56:03There's a penalty for Verstappen being posted.
00:56:05To prevent a recurrence of that type
00:56:07of situation, they now require
00:56:09in technical inspection
00:56:11for the team to either
00:56:13sign off that the measurement
00:56:15is correct and that the part
00:56:17is out of specification,
00:56:19in this case
00:56:21the ride height of the front wing endplate,
00:56:23or
00:56:25the car is impounded and brought to
00:56:27the appeal. And that is a
00:56:29procedure that was not in place last
00:56:31fall in Malaysia and
00:56:33certainly aided to the success
00:56:35of Ferrari's appeal.
00:56:37So Verstappen comes in to serve
00:56:39his 10 second penalty.
00:56:43No work is allowed to be done
00:56:45on the card during a penalty
00:56:47stop. And away he goes.
00:56:49He was in 19th
00:56:51place anyway last, so it really didn't
00:56:53have much effect in seconds. It just means he's
00:56:55further back in last than he was before.
00:56:59And as for whether the 2mm
00:57:01made a difference, yes you could
00:57:03see it in the wind tunnel, no, maybe you couldn't
00:57:05see it or feel it on the racetrack.
00:57:07And as Coulthard told us during our pre-race,
00:57:09the front wing was
00:57:11actually tipped the wrong way, so it would not
00:57:13have been beneficial
00:57:15to have the wing at that
00:57:17attitude. However,
00:57:19rule is the rule, there is a tolerance as Jarno
00:57:21Trulli comes in, and if you don't enforce the rule,
00:57:23do you have rules really?
00:57:27Eddie Irvine drove by
00:57:29to his pit for Jaguar.
00:57:33And Trulli's away.
00:57:39And Ed is away.
00:57:41The question was raised to Max Mosley,
00:57:43the head of the FIA,
00:57:45why not inspect the car's
00:57:47pre-race, and the NASCAR example
00:57:49was brought up particularly.
00:57:53And what's this? Riccardo Zonta.
00:57:55Zonta takes off the grass,
00:57:57actually quite a good way through.
00:58:01But it comes to no good for Nick Heidfeld.
00:58:03Yeah, that's the end of a very
00:58:05poor weekend for him, not a happy guy.
00:58:09But he has a great future nonetheless in Formula 1.
00:58:13So, they asked Mosley, why not
00:58:15inspect the car's pre-race, and then
00:58:17during post-race, only inspect
00:58:19things that were not visible
00:58:21during pre-race. And it was Max Mosley
00:58:23who brought out an example
00:58:25from NASCAR in the United States,
00:58:27although it's about a
00:58:29ten-year-old example, where the team's
00:58:31ride height would be measured in pre-race,
00:58:33but the teams would put balsa
00:58:35wood between the springs and
00:58:37the suspension member,
00:58:39and go out for the pace lap, jam on
00:58:41the brakes, and bring the car back down to
00:58:43workable, though no longer legal, ride height.
00:58:45So, Max Mosley says that will
00:58:47not happen, there will not be a pre-race
00:58:49inspection that will
00:58:51preclude the post-race inspection.
00:58:53Here's Mazzucconi
00:58:55for Minardi, making his pit stop.
00:58:57Good quick stop for Minardi.
00:59:03And Mazzucconi is back out. So, no stops
00:59:05yet for Mika Hakkinen, nor Michael Schumacher
00:59:07as McLaren leads
00:59:09Ferrari in the Grand Prix of San Marino.
00:59:13Welcome back to the Grand Prix of San Marino.
00:59:19David Coulthard had slid back
00:59:21a bit from Rubens Barrichello, and now comes
00:59:23in to make his stop, lap
00:59:2526.
00:59:27Yeah, it was a good time for them to
00:59:29bring him in. I mean, they're obviously on a two-stop
00:59:31strategy on McLaren, and
00:59:33Rubens was holding up David,
00:59:35and at a certain point in time, he said, well, let's get him in
00:59:37now as quick as we can, so he gets, hopefully,
00:59:39a clear bit of road when he goes out.
00:59:41Well, he had 15 seconds on Jack Villeneuve,
00:59:43and, unfortunately
00:59:45for David, there were about five cars right
00:59:47there with Villeneuve, all of which will
00:59:49have to stop. Pedro Diniz
00:59:51is in.
00:59:53It's all going to pan out, whether we see
00:59:55whether the other McLaren comes in.
00:59:57I would have thought it unlikely that
00:59:59David was on a two-stop
01:00:01and Mika was on a
01:00:03two, but nevertheless,
01:00:05all the other way around, so
01:00:07we're going to see very shortly.
01:00:09It looks like he's going very quickly. No.
01:00:11That's the other. A little bit of
01:00:13smoke there.
01:00:21And a lap car separating the leaders
01:00:23now as HÃ¥konen has
01:00:25opened it up to 4.1
01:00:27seconds. That's Fisichella,
01:00:29who's just having a dreadful weekend.
01:00:31He's mired in 15th place.
01:00:33And there's activity
01:00:35in the Ferrari pit now.
01:00:41That's Fisichella and Johnny Herbert
01:00:43having a bit of a go there. Fisichella
01:00:45has just got by Johnny Herbert.
01:00:47And that is for position.
01:00:49Oh, Johnny
01:00:51just really slid the nose
01:00:53coming off that corner.
01:01:04So as Peter pointed out at the top
01:01:06of the show, Johnny Herbert has got to
01:01:08turn it up.
01:01:10In danger of losing that ride.
01:01:12Oh, the cross goes
01:01:14straight into his
01:01:16lock-up, so that's the end of that.
01:01:18Mika Salo in for his stop. Good
01:01:20stop there by Salvo.
01:01:27Ferrari right at the top end of your picture
01:01:29because they're the constructors' leaders,
01:01:31the winners last year as Mika Hakkinen
01:01:33comes in for a pit stop.
01:01:35And McLaren set up as well. Here's Hakkinen.
01:01:47Ferrari's off.
01:01:49I'm sorry, McLaren's off.
01:01:51And did the Ferraris, they dropped the Ferrari
01:01:53off the jacks. Did it stall?
01:01:56Yeah, he's there, but of course
01:01:58it's a very slow pit lane, as we know.
01:02:0047 miles an hour.
01:02:03It looked like they had dropped the Ferrari
01:02:05down off the jacks, but then Schumacher
01:02:07did not move away
01:02:09smartly, and so Hakkinen will extend
01:02:11his advantage over Schumacher
01:02:13as we continue to cycle
01:02:15through pit stops.
01:02:17Hakkinen's stop was two seconds quicker than Michael's.
01:02:22And there's the difference.
01:02:25Now Michael's going to try and turn in one of his
01:02:27quick laps, and Mika Hakkinen's got to
01:02:29defend by putting on an even quicker lap
01:02:32on these hot tyres,
01:02:34but of course not at racing temperature.
01:02:36And you have to be just cautious for this first
01:02:38lap or so.
01:02:40So among the front four, only Rubens Barrichello
01:02:42has not pitted, and he'll be in this time.
01:02:44There's quite a long discussion between
01:02:46Ross Brawn and one of the other crew chiefs
01:02:48whether to short or do a long fill
01:02:50on Michael Schumacher.
01:02:52So we'll just have to wait and see now
01:02:54just whether they did give it a long fill.
01:02:56If it was 9.9, there was a good chance
01:02:58they did put more fuel in than normal.
01:03:00And I think that's what we were seeing, Derek,
01:03:02is they dropped Michael down off the jack,
01:03:04but he had to wait until the refuelling was completed
01:03:06to pull away,
01:03:08so that he would be able to
01:03:10get back on track.
01:03:12And again, you're with Rubens Barrichello
01:03:14who should pit this time.
01:03:26Now he's going on to the rev limiter
01:03:28for the last, well, not the last time,
01:03:30but the last race this year.
01:03:32After that, they have to come in on their own
01:03:34speed.
01:03:36Now he's going on to the rev limiter
01:03:38for the last, well, not the last time,
01:03:40but the last race this year.
01:03:42After that, they have to come in on their own
01:03:44judgement of what that speed limit is,
01:03:46which is not very easy when you've got no
01:03:48controls whatsoever, or should I say
01:03:50no dials in front of you.
01:03:52Now only a little over 7 seconds
01:03:54for Barrichello.
01:04:02So doubtful, Derek, that that's enough fuel
01:04:04to get Barrichello back in.
01:04:06I would say most definitely, yes.
01:04:08He comes out ahead of David Coulthard again,
01:04:10which is exactly what they wanted.
01:04:16Here's a quick stop, 7.3,
01:04:18that's as good as we've seen.
01:04:26Now BAR has picked up a Japanese
01:04:28fuel and oil sponsor,
01:04:30the first such company from Japan
01:04:32to be involved in Formula 1, we're told.
01:04:38Ron Meadows is the new team manager,
01:04:40Robert Singh got pushed sideways
01:04:42to look at future developments,
01:04:44we're told.
01:04:46Well, Rubens Barrichello back out
01:04:48in front of David Coulthard,
01:04:50going to have a little traffic to contend with,
01:04:52as we are just coming up on halfway.
01:05:17Yes, to just put enough fuel
01:05:19into the end wouldn't take much,
01:05:21because the Ferraris came in,
01:05:23or Schumacher came in with like
01:05:25three laps underneath the half distance,
01:05:27four laps under it, so
01:05:29it wouldn't need much fuel to make him go the extra bit.
01:05:31And Ralf Schumacher comes in.
01:05:33Ralf was lying in fifth place,
01:05:35but of course that was amongst all the cars
01:05:37that had had to pit stop.
01:05:40Good stop by Williams.
01:05:43You hear that car
01:05:45burping and farting off the rev limiter.
01:05:47Williams have in fact won here seven times
01:05:49to McLaren six,
01:05:51and McLaren have finished one, two,
01:05:53first and second on three occasions,
01:05:55whereas McWilliams have only finished
01:05:57one, two, once.
01:06:00And I believe we saw Zonta coming into the pit,
01:06:03and
01:06:06right there as Ralf went out.
01:06:08Behind Jacques Villeneuve.
01:06:16So Mika Hakkinen continues
01:06:18to lead Michael Schumacher.
01:06:20It's McLaren-Ferrari-Ferrari-VAR.
01:06:22We'll be right back.
01:06:34Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage.
01:06:36Welcome back to Fox Sportsnet coverage
01:06:38of the Varsteiner Grand Prix of San Marino,
01:06:41where Mika Hakkinen has led from the pole.
01:06:43He now has a five-second lead on Michael Schumacher.
01:06:46The best battle on the racetrack is 30 seconds behind them.
01:06:49Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard
01:06:51for third.
01:06:53Here's Johnny Herbert
01:06:55stopping at just right about halfway.
01:06:58Yeah, he was in 13th place
01:07:00behind Alexander Wurz
01:07:02in the Benetton Sandwich.
01:07:05As we said earlier, he's got a lot on his shoulders.
01:07:07He's got to start showing his form here,
01:07:10and he has a last crack at the British Grand Prix.
01:07:12If it doesn't work, bad luck.
01:07:14Oh, what a good pit of overtaking there
01:07:16by Mika Hakkinen.
01:07:20You've just got to get to know
01:07:22who these other drivers are when you're lapping.
01:07:23There's nothing worse.
01:07:25Actually, it's worse in sports car racing.
01:07:26You've got two drivers.
01:07:27You don't know who the heck is in the car you're lapping.
01:07:29But in Formula One, at least they do know
01:07:31who it is they're coming up behind.
01:07:32Even then, you're never quite sure
01:07:33if the guy has seen you,
01:07:34and you're just hoping that the marshals
01:07:35are waving their flags correctly,
01:07:37the blue flag,
01:07:38to indicate that you wish to overtake.
01:07:40All very dodgy for them.
01:07:41And here we have the guys again
01:07:42with Rubens Barrichello
01:07:44and David Coulthard
01:07:46in attendance right behind him.
01:07:48If David wished his pit stop
01:07:49had been just a second or two quicker.
01:07:51Yeah, this has been the battle of the day.
01:07:54Barrichello and Coulthard
01:07:55have started right off the start
01:07:57when they almost interlocked wheels
01:07:59entering the first corner.
01:08:03There's a look at the start once again.
01:08:05Look at the white car
01:08:06coming across the racetrack.
01:08:07Villeneuve
01:08:08going to pop up there for 5th from 9th.
01:08:11Villeneuve was really trying to get through,
01:08:13and that's where Jacques,
01:08:14he did such a super job
01:08:15and pulled himself straight up to 5th place.
01:08:18Superb piece of driving by Jacques Villeneuve.
01:08:20He just happened to be in the right place,
01:08:21and he went for that gap.
01:08:22David Coulthard
01:08:23trying to have a go there.
01:08:26Going by Barrichello.
01:08:28And he's been chasing Barrichello ever since.
01:08:31Barrichello is doing an immaculate job.
01:08:33You have to.
01:08:34If he made one single mistake,
01:08:36one thing he can't misgear.
01:08:39Oh, look at that.
01:08:40A little bit of
01:08:41questionable overtaking there.
01:08:43It's one of the Saubers
01:08:44that Denis tries to go through.
01:08:47And that fumbles himself
01:08:48and gets retaken again.
01:08:50Zonta moves past.
01:08:55And there is the gap,
01:08:561st to 2nd,
01:08:58with the lap car splitting.
01:09:00And Schumacher.
01:09:02There is 3rd and 4th.
01:09:04Barrichello and Coulthard.
01:09:07You know, in next weekend,
01:09:09Rubens Barrichello will be in
01:09:11Southern California.
01:09:13He's coming to the Long Beach Grand Prix.
01:09:15He can't be looking for a drive, can he?
01:09:17I hope not.
01:09:18He says the long term comes right here.
01:09:20And in two weeks' time,
01:09:21NASCAR racer Johnny Benson
01:09:22will go to Silverstone.
01:09:24He goes to at least one Grand Prix a year.
01:09:26He's a huge Formula 1 fan.
01:09:28In fact, Benson told me last week
01:09:29that during the Bristol-Tennessee race,
01:09:31during a caution flag,
01:09:33he keys the two-way radio
01:09:34and he says,
01:09:35give me the running order of the Formula 1.
01:09:36Because they were in Brazil,
01:09:37the race was on at the same time.
01:09:39Down through 2nd, 3rd, 4th.
01:09:42And the spotter goes,
01:09:43all right, Johnny, one lap to go.
01:09:44We're going green.
01:09:45And he's in the car.
01:09:46He says, I'm thinking,
01:09:47rats, I wanted to hear
01:09:48the rest of the running order.
01:09:49Now I've got to wait
01:09:50for the next caution flag.
01:09:51So some of these fellows
01:09:53are even fans.
01:09:55While they're in the car,
01:09:56they're thinking,
01:09:57what's going on in Formula 1?
01:09:58He's introduced to Michael Schumacher,
01:09:59who said he didn't know anybody in NASCAR.
01:10:02Maybe after Silverstone, he will.
01:10:07Jeff Gordon, by the way,
01:10:08says he's absolutely fascinated
01:10:10by Formula 1 cars
01:10:12and would love to have
01:10:13an opportunity to test one.
01:10:14He was offered that chance last year,
01:10:16but it was in a make-of car
01:10:18that conflicts with the one
01:10:19he drives in NASCAR.
01:10:20So that did not come about.
01:10:22Perhaps during testing
01:10:23for the U.S. Grand Prix,
01:10:24perhaps it might.
01:10:25Tony Stewart,
01:10:26who has a lot of open wheels experience,
01:10:29also has talked about
01:10:31wishing for a Formula 1 test drive.
01:10:34I think they'll find it very different.
01:10:36So here's Jack Villeneuve
01:10:37and Ralph Schumacher
01:10:41battling for fifth place,
01:10:43as they have been
01:10:44very much of the day.
01:10:45And here's our third-place battle
01:10:46once again,
01:10:47Barrichello's Ferrari.
01:10:49And there's a look at Villeneuve
01:10:50bouncing over those curbs.
01:10:53You just, what's astonishing
01:10:54is you see the tire flex.
01:10:55You don't see the suspension move
01:10:57when they hit those curbs.
01:10:58It just shows how stiffly
01:11:00set up these cars are.
01:11:07Eddie Irvine, we saw,
01:11:08slowing down quite dramatically
01:11:09not long ago.
01:11:10In fact,
01:11:11he said he was having a misfire.
01:11:13And the Jaguar mechanics
01:11:14then adjusted something
01:11:15and he seems to be running
01:11:16just fine right now.
01:11:17So it wasn't any too dramatic,
01:11:19I'm glad to say,
01:11:20for Eddie,
01:11:21who's now in ninth place.
01:11:23Let's have a look
01:11:24team by team
01:11:25for McLaren.
01:11:26Hocken and Leeds.
01:11:27Goulthard is fourth.
01:11:28Ferrari runs second and third.
01:11:32Frenson is out
01:11:33with gearbox problems.
01:11:34Truly is eighth
01:11:35for Jordan.
01:11:37For Jaguar,
01:11:38Irvine ninth,
01:11:39Herbert fifteenth.
01:11:41For Williams,
01:11:42Jensen Button
01:11:43out in the sand trap.
01:11:44Ralph Schumacher is
01:11:46sixth, battling fifth.
01:11:48For Benetton,
01:11:49tough day for Verts
01:11:50in twelfth
01:11:51and Fisichella
01:11:52fourteenth.
01:11:54Both of the pros
01:11:55are out.
01:11:58For Sauber,
01:11:59Mika Salo
01:12:00just out of the points
01:12:01in seventh.
01:12:02You see him there
01:12:03and then Denitz
01:12:04in eleventh.
01:12:06And for Arrows,
01:12:07De La Rosa and Verstappen
01:12:08both still running.
01:12:10For Minardi,
01:12:11Mazzucati in sixteenth,
01:12:12Jeunet,
01:12:13off course.
01:12:14And finally,
01:12:15BAR
01:12:18with Jacques Villeneuve
01:12:19running in
01:12:20fifth.
01:12:21And Riccardo Zonta
01:12:22in tenth.
01:12:25They're locking up
01:12:26some brakes now,
01:12:27those guys really.
01:12:28They're having
01:12:29such a good go.
01:12:30Zonta,
01:12:31I believe that's
01:12:32Zonta and Denitz.
01:12:33They're having
01:12:34a really good go.
01:12:41Zonta,
01:12:42Denitz and Lewis
01:12:43having a real go.
01:12:44Now the only pit stops
01:12:45that have not been made
01:12:46is Benetton
01:12:47has again adopted
01:12:48a strategy
01:12:49of running a
01:12:50completely full load
01:12:51on the first tank
01:12:52and running it nearly dry.
01:12:53But finally,
01:12:54they are setting up
01:12:55and they will be
01:12:56the last cars to pit.
01:13:09Fisichella has come
01:13:10to thirteenth
01:13:11from his starting position
01:13:12way back on the grid.
01:13:19Ooh,
01:13:20locking that inside wheel up.
01:13:23And really,
01:13:24then getting around the corner.
01:13:25It's amazing how
01:13:26you can still turn the wheel
01:13:27even though your inside wheel
01:13:28is locking up.
01:13:29You can still get the steering
01:13:30and get the car
01:13:31to bite into it.
01:13:32But you have to get on the power
01:13:33to drive it through.
01:13:34You can't let it go like that.
01:13:35It's going to slide off.
01:13:36So,
01:13:37once it's locking up,
01:13:38you get the car pointed,
01:13:39try and sit the tail
01:13:40and try and drive it through on it.
01:13:42Yeah,
01:13:43really,
01:13:44you're three-wheeling.
01:13:45It's almost like
01:13:46you're carrying that
01:13:47inside front wheel in the air
01:13:48because it's doing nothing
01:13:49for you there under lock-up.
01:13:51And every time you do it,
01:13:52you think,
01:13:53oh, please don't go too far.
01:13:54I don't want to get a flat spot
01:13:55on the tyre,
01:13:56which means it's like
01:13:57a threatening piece,
01:13:58an English coin, of course.
01:13:59And, of course,
01:14:00it rattles as you're going
01:14:01along the circuit
01:14:02and that really does upset
01:14:03your steering.
01:14:04And, of course,
01:14:05does slow you down.
01:14:10Ljubljanav up for fifth
01:14:11and Zonta tenth.
01:14:12So,
01:14:13good day for B.A.R.
01:14:14You're watching Zonta
01:14:15battling Pedro Diniz.
01:14:17And, uh,
01:14:18Alexander Wirtz
01:14:19here for Benetton.
01:14:20It's interesting to note
01:14:21that Michael Schumacher
01:14:22is faster in the first sector,
01:14:23but Hakanen's quicker
01:14:24in the last two.
01:14:25Hence,
01:14:26Hakanen is just
01:14:27eking away a little bit.
01:14:28There's a possibility
01:14:29that Hakanen should be
01:14:30in the next five laps
01:14:31and Schumacher
01:14:32in the next eleven.
01:14:33We're told by our guys
01:14:34down in the pits.
01:14:37There's first and second.
01:14:38Hakanen and the Ferrari
01:14:40of Schumacher
01:14:41and they are closing in
01:14:43on that very tight battle
01:14:46back at tenth place.
01:14:48It looked like
01:14:49Rommel in the desert then,
01:14:50but I don't think it was.
01:14:51I think somebody got
01:14:52really well out from the sand.
01:14:54Here we go.
01:14:55Let's see here.
01:14:56Whoa!
01:14:58There's that Zonta
01:14:59going off in a big way.
01:15:01Keeps going.
01:15:02But he's kept going.
01:15:03Those skid marks,
01:15:04of course,
01:15:05are Heidfeldt's.
01:15:06And Zonta was very lucky
01:15:07to lose it right at the end
01:15:08of the corner.
01:15:09When I say lucky,
01:15:10I guess you're never lucky
01:15:11when you spin,
01:15:12but he was lucky
01:15:13he didn't cloud anything
01:15:15Now, of course,
01:15:16what is the interesting thing
01:15:17is here,
01:15:18Hakanen's got to come in
01:15:19for fuel.
01:15:20And if what we're told
01:15:21by our men in the pits
01:15:22is that he'll come in
01:15:24at a certain point,
01:15:25he will have to take
01:15:26a quantity of fuel.
01:15:27And when Schumacher
01:15:28comes in later,
01:15:29he will take on less fuel,
01:15:30which means that he can,
01:15:31therefore,
01:15:32get a quicker pit stop.
01:15:34And therefore,
01:15:35hopefully get out,
01:15:36in his words,
01:15:37get out in front of Hakanen
01:15:38or certainly closer to Hakanen
01:15:39and make a last quick dash
01:15:41for the finish.
01:15:44So Benetton now making
01:15:45their pit stops,
01:15:46finally.
01:15:47This is Alexander Wurtz,
01:15:48lap thirty-nine.
01:15:49So leaves only Fisichella
01:15:50on the racetrack,
01:15:51who has not made one stop
01:15:52and second stops
01:15:53coming up
01:15:54for much of the field.
01:15:55So that may close the gap
01:15:56for Benetton
01:15:57at the end of the race.
01:15:58He's got to come in
01:15:59at a certain point.
01:16:00And if what we're told
01:16:01by our men in the pits
01:16:02is that he'll come in
01:16:03at a certain point,
01:16:04he will have to take on
01:16:05less fuel.
01:16:06And therefore,
01:16:07hopefully get out
01:16:08in front of Hakanen
01:16:09or certainly closer to Hakanen
01:16:10and make a last quick dash
01:16:11for the finish.
01:16:12So Benetton now making
01:16:13a last quick dash
01:16:14for Benetton
01:16:15at the end of the race.
01:16:16So that may close
01:16:17things up a bit.
01:16:18We'll see as Mika Hakanen
01:16:19has a four-second lead
01:16:20on Michael Schumacher.
01:16:21You're watching
01:16:22Formula One
01:16:23on Fox Sports Net.
01:16:24Welcome back to
01:16:25Imola as race leader
01:16:26Mika Hakanen
01:16:27laps past
01:16:28Pedro Diniz.
01:16:29Hakanen with a
01:16:30four-point-seven-second
01:16:31lead
01:16:32over this man,
01:16:33Michael Schumacher's
01:16:34Ferrari.
01:16:35So pit stops
01:16:36will be coming up.
01:16:37Fisichella
01:16:38and now for Benetton
01:16:39Jim Rome tells it
01:16:40like it is
01:16:41on the nightline
01:16:42of sports talk shows.
01:16:43The last word
01:16:44weeknight
01:16:45six-thirty
01:16:46and eleven-thirty
01:16:47on Fox Sports Net.
01:16:48That was a quite good
01:16:49stop by Fisichella
01:16:50but now of course
01:16:51we've got the situation
01:16:52where Schumacher
01:16:53has got to
01:16:54make inroads
01:16:55into this four-second
01:16:56deficit he has
01:16:57behind Hakanen
01:16:58before their pit stops
01:16:59assuming they're
01:17:00both going to do
01:17:01two pit stops.
01:17:02So Benetton
01:17:03has a
01:17:04four-second
01:17:05lead
01:17:06over Michael Schumacher.
01:17:07Jim Rome
01:17:09That's Verstappen
01:17:10in the pits.
01:17:11Of course he was
01:17:12suffering a lot
01:17:13with neck problems
01:17:14at the last Grand Prix
01:17:15and actually had to
01:17:16slow down and give up
01:17:17a few positions.
01:17:18Since then
01:17:19Walkinshaw
01:17:20the team owner
01:17:21has in fact
01:17:22sent him along
01:17:23to his rugby team
01:17:24Gloucester
01:17:25to get some training
01:17:26in the last ten days
01:17:27to strengthen up
01:17:28his neck.
01:17:29Him in one of
01:17:30three circuits
01:17:31like Brazil
01:17:32three of the seventeen
01:17:33Formula One circuits
01:17:34with predominantly
01:17:35left-hand turns.
01:17:36So it's a little
01:17:37bit different
01:17:38G-loading than what
01:17:39the drivers are
01:17:40accustomed to
01:17:41in most circuits.
01:17:42Of course, but in fact
01:17:43in this track
01:17:44looking at the
01:17:45left-hander there
01:17:46the corners aren't
01:17:47that long.
01:17:48We have lots of
01:17:49high-speed straights
01:17:50and very tight
01:17:51corners.
01:17:52Twenty laps to go
01:17:53second round of
01:17:54pit stops coming
01:17:55for the McLarens
01:17:56and the Ferraris.
01:17:57This is Rubens
01:17:58Barrichello
01:17:59and the David Coulthard
01:18:00incident as somebody
01:18:01gets out a little bit
01:18:02wide on the exit
01:18:03of the corner.
01:18:04And this is about
01:18:05as far apart
01:18:06as it seems to have
01:18:07been all day.
01:18:08Yes, it's been a
01:18:09great dice.
01:18:10I'm sure David
01:18:11Coulthard would love
01:18:12to have been ahead
01:18:13but he wasn't.
01:18:14And if you're not
01:18:15ahead then you just
01:18:16cannot get past
01:18:17anybody in a track
01:18:18like this.
01:18:19Now here is
01:18:20Schumacher having
01:18:21caught up
01:18:22Pedro Diniz.
01:18:23Hakkinen trying to
01:18:24extend that lead.
01:18:25I must say
01:18:26Hakkinen seems to
01:18:27drop back a bit there.
01:18:28He did have a
01:18:29four-second lead
01:18:30just now and he
01:18:31seems to have
01:18:32dropped back quite a
01:18:33bit into the
01:18:34clutches of
01:18:35Jensen Earley,
01:18:36Jensen Button,
01:18:37Mark Genet,
01:18:38Heidfeld and
01:18:39Alessi starting
01:18:40his tenth Grand
01:18:41Prix of San
01:18:42Marino and
01:18:43it's the first time
01:18:44in six years that
01:18:45Alessi has failed
01:18:46to finish this race.
01:18:47That was a very
01:18:48generous move by
01:18:49Pedro Diniz there
01:18:50to let Michael
01:18:51Schumacher by.
01:18:52A pretty dodgy
01:18:53place going into
01:18:54Agri Minerali
01:18:55because you have a
01:18:56right-hander
01:18:57followed by another
01:18:58right to actually
01:18:59pull over and let
01:19:00him through.
01:19:01It was a pretty
01:19:02brave maneuver and
01:19:03brave of Schumacher
01:19:05Having a very good
01:19:06run today is
01:19:07Mika Salo.
01:19:13Good stop.
01:19:16Now, when will
01:19:17these two come in?
01:19:18That's the question.
01:19:19On the first round
01:19:20of pit stops,
01:19:21Coulthard preceded
01:19:22HÃ¥kinen into the
01:19:23pits by a lap and
01:19:24Rubens Barrichello
01:19:25was a lap behind
01:19:26Schumacher coming in.
01:19:27So we would expect
01:19:28Coulthard and
01:19:29Schumacher to be
01:19:30the first of each
01:19:31two to come in.
01:19:32You would think so,
01:19:33but with team
01:19:34strategy the way it
01:19:35is and we
01:19:36understand they
01:19:37did put a little
01:19:38extra fuel in
01:19:39Schumacher's car
01:19:40at the last or
01:19:41the first stop
01:19:42and the only stop
01:19:43he's had so far
01:19:44that of course he
01:19:45would be able to
01:19:46go a little further
01:19:47on this tank full.
01:19:48Of course the
01:19:49team strategists
01:19:50are monitoring not
01:19:51overly lap times
01:19:52but also track
01:19:53positions.
01:19:54What happens if
01:19:55we pit now?
01:19:56Who do we come
01:19:57out behind?
01:19:58Who do we come
01:19:59out in front of?
01:20:00There's Coulthard
01:20:02It's a long time
01:20:03to be there in
01:20:04the turbulence
01:20:05behind that
01:20:06Ferrari.
01:20:07Very, very tough
01:20:08for David to be
01:20:09there so close
01:20:10for so long
01:20:11but so difficult
01:20:12to go by and
01:20:13the Ferrari does
01:20:14seem to have a
01:20:15lot of power.
01:20:16Certainly equal
01:20:17to the Mercedes
01:20:18engine.
01:20:23And of course
01:20:24it's hard to say
01:20:25are these two
01:20:26cars equally
01:20:27matched or
01:20:28is Coulthard
01:20:29being held up?
01:20:32Jacques Villeneuve
01:20:33who's also having
01:20:34a good run today
01:20:35for VAR.
01:20:36It's his fifth
01:20:37start here in
01:20:38San Marino.
01:20:39He's only finished
01:20:40in the points once
01:20:41two DNFs
01:20:42including last year
01:20:43when he was out
01:20:44on the very first
01:20:45lap of the race.
01:20:47And here's Mika.
01:20:53Tires complete.
01:20:55Fueling complete.
01:20:57Away with a little
01:20:58bit of wheel spin
01:20:59down the lane there.
01:21:00And of course
01:21:01he's on his
01:21:02rev limiter as he
01:21:03goes down there.
01:21:0447, 48 miles
01:21:05an hour.
01:21:06Very restricted
01:21:07as they go out.
01:21:08Then he can let
01:21:09it all hang out
01:21:10and go.
01:21:11Remember the tires
01:21:12aren't as hot
01:21:13as they would be
01:21:14if you'd been
01:21:15doing many laps
01:21:16so he's got to
01:21:17let those tires
01:21:18build up some
01:21:19temperature before
01:21:20he can really
01:21:21step on it.
01:21:22Mazzucani
01:21:23in for Minardi
01:21:24and Michael Schumacher
01:21:25assumes the lead.
01:21:28Now of course
01:21:29down to the Ferrari
01:21:30pitstop and just
01:21:31how quick Ferrari
01:21:32can be at this
01:21:33pitstop just to
01:21:34help Schumacher
01:21:35maybe get out
01:21:36in front of
01:21:37Hakkinen.
01:21:38Remember Michael
01:21:39had put up some
01:21:40very quick laps
01:21:41just before Hakkinen
01:21:42went in and I'm
01:21:43sure he's putting
01:21:44some in now.
01:21:45Watching the 3-4
01:21:46battle.
01:21:47Ferrachello and
01:21:48Coulthard.
01:21:49And yes with
01:21:50Schumacher now
01:21:51on light tanks
01:21:52this would be his
01:21:53best opportunity
01:21:54of the day to
01:21:55eat into what was
01:21:56Hakkinen's lead
01:21:57before Mika's
01:21:58lap.
01:22:05Jarno Trulli.
01:22:08It's the only
01:22:09remaining Jordan
01:22:10in the race.
01:22:16He couldn't get
01:22:17that gear.
01:22:18Oh and Irvine
01:22:19goes out.
01:22:20Boy they nearly
01:22:21collected wheels.
01:22:22It would have
01:22:23been carnage if
01:22:24they'd touched.
01:22:25But what a move
01:22:26for Trulli there
01:22:28And look at Irvine
01:22:29hound him as they
01:22:30get up to speed.
01:22:34Trulli's tyres
01:22:35I just mentioned
01:22:36will not be quite as
01:22:37hot as Eddie's so
01:22:38he's got to make his
01:22:39car very wide for a
01:22:40few corners to get
01:22:41some temperature in
01:22:42them.
01:22:44No Eddie
01:22:45there is no way
01:22:46you can get by there
01:22:47because you've got
01:22:48a left-hander
01:22:49leading into a
01:22:50sharp right.
01:22:53Well Irvine was
01:22:54either giving it a
01:22:55game try or
01:22:56frustration.
01:22:57Did it both?
01:22:58Yes.
01:23:00Pedro de la Rosa
01:23:01with a nine-second
01:23:02stop for Arrows.
01:23:04And Michael
01:23:05Schumacher now
01:23:06the race leader.
01:23:09Pedro de Nietz
01:23:10behind.
01:23:14Schumacher needs
01:23:15some good clear laps
01:23:16now and he's got
01:23:17traffic in front of
01:23:18him but the Ferrari
01:23:19are wise they'll
01:23:20bring him in
01:23:21before he catches
01:23:22up the traffic
01:23:23in front of him.
01:23:27This is when you
01:23:28generally see Schumacher
01:23:29at his best as we
01:23:30see Ralph taking
01:23:31to the grass.
01:23:32Fortunately it's very
01:23:33dry down here at the
01:23:34moment and he
01:23:35managed to get a
01:23:36certain amount of
01:23:37grip out of it.
01:23:39And here's Ferrari
01:23:40setting up.
01:23:41The question is
01:23:42is it Barrichello or
01:23:43Schumacher who will
01:23:44be in?
01:23:45Now there's
01:23:46Barrichello and
01:23:47Coulthard.
01:23:48We're continuing to
01:23:49run in pretty close
01:23:50formation.
01:23:51You saw Schumacher
01:23:52there.
01:23:57A lot of it will
01:23:58really depend on this
01:23:59traffic as to which
01:24:00one they bring in
01:24:01first as McLaren
01:24:02are setting up.
01:24:03We know who they're
01:24:04setting up for.
01:24:14Jack Bielner
01:24:15there's his
01:24:16teammate Riccardo
01:24:17Zonta in the pits.
01:24:21Getting enough
01:24:22fuel to finish the
01:24:23race and oh
01:24:24Ralph is coasting
01:24:25off the course.
01:24:26And there's
01:24:27Barrichello in and
01:24:28Coulthard both at the
01:24:29same time.
01:24:30Now this is where
01:24:31Coulthard has to try
01:24:32and get out in front.
01:24:33He's ahead of him in
01:24:34the pit lane.
01:24:35Is he going to get
01:24:36in front?
01:24:37Here goes Barrichello.
01:24:38Oh my goodness.
01:24:39He gets out in front.
01:24:40There'll be some
01:24:41arguments about that
01:24:42one but it was clean.
01:24:43David didn't get any
01:24:44wheel spin and
01:24:45Barrichello did and
01:24:46that just helped him
01:24:47get stability as he
01:24:48came out.
01:24:49Otherwise it could
01:24:50have been nasty.
01:24:51That was all the
01:24:52difference.
01:24:53You saw Barrichello
01:24:55allowed Coulthard to
01:24:56claim the pit lane.
01:24:59And a tough day for
01:25:00Ralph Schumacher
01:25:01for the second or
01:25:02third in four
01:25:04San Marino
01:25:05Grand Prixs he does
01:25:06not finish.
01:25:07Look at how close
01:25:08that is.
01:25:11So now we're going to
01:25:12see just what David
01:25:13could have done if
01:25:14he'd been in front
01:25:15from the beginning
01:25:16of the race.
01:25:17Will he pull away
01:25:18from Rubens or not?
01:25:19Rubens really needs
01:25:20to stay there to get
01:25:21the affections of the
01:25:22Italian Tifosi behind
01:25:23him.
01:25:24The Italian Tifosi
01:25:25obviously getting
01:25:26ready now for Schumacher
01:25:27to come in.
01:25:28And they've got to be
01:25:29right on their metal
01:25:30to make sure that this
01:25:31pit stop is the best
01:25:32that they've done
01:25:33today and their
01:25:34strategy is working
01:25:35out as Ralph walks
01:25:36back to the pits.
01:25:41Coulthard's stop was
01:25:42quicker than
01:25:43Barrichello's but of
01:25:44course we surmise that
01:25:45each of them has just
01:25:46barely enough fuel to
01:25:47go the distance.
01:25:48So there wouldn't be a
01:25:49whole lot of difference
01:25:50in the as-raced weight
01:25:51of these two cars
01:25:53Michael Schumacher
01:25:54meanwhile turns
01:25:55ever quicker laps
01:25:56and I would say
01:25:57Derek that he's
01:25:58pretty well eaten up
01:25:59whatever gap Mika
01:26:00HÃ¥konen had on him.
01:26:01It was just about
01:26:023.7 seconds prior to
01:26:03the HÃ¥konen pit stop.
01:26:08So the question will
01:26:09be can Michael get
01:26:10in and out before
01:26:11Mika comes storming
01:26:12down the front
01:26:13straightaway.
01:26:14Well they reckon for
01:26:15every jump that
01:26:16Schumacher makes
01:26:17he's going to get
01:26:18in and out of the
01:26:19pit.
01:26:20He's going to
01:26:21get in and out of
01:26:22the pit.
01:26:23Well they reckon
01:26:24for every 22 pounds
01:26:259 kilos of weight
01:26:26of in other words
01:26:27of fuel you lose
01:26:280.3 of a second
01:26:29so it's very critical
01:26:30to get right in on
01:26:31this fuel consumption
01:26:32bit and put them in
01:26:33minimum amount
01:26:34because you lose
01:26:35so much time.
01:26:36Apart from the fact
01:26:37you have to put so
01:26:38much fuel in you
01:26:39lose a lot on the
01:26:40laps.
01:26:41This has got to be
01:26:42so critical for Ferrari
01:26:43will they do their
01:26:44usual excellent pit
01:26:45stops?
01:26:46That was a good
01:26:47one at 6.2 now
01:26:48will he go out ahead
01:26:49of Mika HÃ¥konen?
01:26:50Here's HÃ¥konen at
01:26:51the head of the
01:26:52straightaway.
01:26:53Can you see HÃ¥konen
01:26:54go by on the
01:26:55out there?
01:26:56No.
01:26:57No HÃ¥konen is
01:26:58just back there.
01:26:59Here he comes
01:27:00now.
01:27:01So Schumacher
01:27:02has taken the lead
01:27:03through a combination
01:27:04of really fast
01:27:05laps at the end
01:27:06of this second
01:27:07stint at a
01:27:08superb Ferrari
01:27:09pit stop.
01:27:10Yeah that was
01:27:11superb pit stop
01:27:12plus as you said
01:27:13he didn't have to
01:27:14take on as much
01:27:15fuel.
01:27:20Here it goes
01:27:21again Mike
01:27:22sorry to interrupt
01:27:23you but you can
01:27:24see HÃ¥konen just
01:27:25coming out of the
01:27:26last turn as
01:27:27Michael goes into
01:27:28the first turn
01:27:29and that is all
01:27:30you need.
01:27:31Brilliant Ferrari
01:27:32strategy you have
01:27:33to say McLaren's
01:27:34work brilliant
01:27:35strategy on
01:27:36Coulthard but
01:27:37they didn't so
01:27:38much on Mika.
01:27:39And two
01:27:40lappers between
01:27:41them so Michael
01:27:42Schumacher goes
01:27:43from four seconds
01:27:44behind before
01:27:45Mika's stop to a
01:27:46four second lead.
01:27:47Welcome back to
01:27:48the Vorsteiner
01:27:49round three of this
01:27:50world championship.
01:27:52Well Michael
01:27:53Schumacher now
01:27:54owns what was a
01:27:55four second lead
01:27:57from Mika HÃ¥konen.
01:28:003.7 a lap
01:28:01ago.
01:28:03So HÃ¥konen and
01:28:04Coulthard second and
01:28:05third for McLaren
01:28:06Barichello's Ferrari
01:28:07Villeneuve's VAR
01:28:08and one of the
01:28:09arrows is way
01:28:10off.
01:28:14De la Rosa.
01:28:20De la Rosa had been
01:28:21running in 13th
01:28:22position.
01:28:26Now finds himself
01:28:27out of the race.
01:28:30So he will join
01:28:31Ralph Schumacher
01:28:32Jean Alessi.
01:28:33Here's a look at it.
01:28:34He locks it up and
01:28:35then the car just
01:28:36goes around.
01:28:37Wow.
01:28:38That is pretty nasty
01:28:39the way it flicked
01:28:40around so quickly
01:28:41locks the front
01:28:42brakes up and
01:28:43it's like one of
01:28:44the back just
01:28:45grabbed and around
01:28:46he went.
01:28:47It almost looked
01:28:48like he was going
01:28:49to crash.
01:28:52De la Rosa is OK
01:28:53trying to refit
01:28:54the steering wheel
01:28:55as required by the
01:28:56regulations.
01:28:58Just got into that
01:28:59retaining rubber
01:29:00wall there.
01:29:01A little limp
01:29:02as he walks away.
01:29:03Well of course he
01:29:04probably had his foot
01:29:05still on the brake
01:29:06when he hit the
01:29:07tires.
01:29:08Schumacher 2.8
01:29:09for HÃ¥konen.
01:29:11HÃ¥konen closing
01:29:12in but catching is
01:29:13one thing and
01:29:14overtaking obviously
01:29:15is another.
01:29:16Ten laps to go but
01:29:17fairly firmly.
01:29:18Well he could have
01:29:19jowled his knee
01:29:20although I know
01:29:21they're meant to
01:29:22get their knees up
01:29:23to their chin but
01:29:24when you're moving
01:29:25forward in the seat
01:29:26as well there's
01:29:27lots of things to
01:29:28happen in the car.
01:29:29Fortunately that's
01:29:30one of the new
01:29:31movable walls where
01:29:32it's tires with a
01:29:33barrier in front of
01:29:34it so the whole wall
01:29:35does deflect and
01:29:36deform but you
01:29:37don't get sucked in
01:29:38like you would with
01:29:39just a tire wall.
01:29:40Well like
01:29:41Schumacher did
01:29:42at Silverstone in
01:29:43fact.
01:29:44Villeneuve and
01:29:45Salo having a
01:29:46very fine race
01:29:47today in the
01:29:48Sauber.
01:29:49A little further
01:29:50back Trulli and
01:29:51Eddie Irvine just
01:29:52a second apart
01:29:53battling for
01:29:54seventh.
01:29:55This will be a
01:29:56great finish for
01:29:57the Jaguar team
01:29:58if they can only
01:29:59get it.
01:30:00It would be nice
01:30:01if they could just
01:30:02get one point.
01:30:03That's what they
01:30:04need on the board.
01:30:05And Johnny Herbert
01:30:06trying to hold off
01:30:07Fisichella for
01:30:08eleventh place.
01:30:09They are pretty
01:30:10much nose to tail.
01:30:11Two and a
01:30:12half laps to
01:30:13go.
01:30:15Two and a
01:30:16half seconds.
01:30:17Schumacher from
01:30:18Hockenheim.
01:30:19But still about
01:30:20ten laps to go.
01:30:21So Mika Hockenheim
01:30:22is eating into
01:30:23Schumacher's lead.
01:30:34The lead
01:30:35exchanged on
01:30:36pit stops where
01:30:37Ferrari ran a
01:30:38longer second
01:30:39segment of the
01:30:40race.
01:30:44Then did McLaren.
01:30:45And thus
01:30:46had a shorter
01:30:47final pit stop.
01:30:49But it wasn't
01:30:50only that Mike.
01:30:51I think of the
01:30:52fact that Schumacher
01:30:53did put in some
01:30:54stirring laps to
01:30:55drop down that
01:30:56four second lead
01:30:57to one and a
01:30:58half at the
01:30:59break which
01:31:00somehow that
01:31:01man just seems
01:31:02to do when
01:31:03required and he
01:31:04does it quite
01:31:05frequently in
01:31:06races just to
01:31:07get that really
01:31:08punish the bloke
01:31:09in front and put
01:31:10the pressure on
01:31:11the pit stop.
01:31:12So really
01:31:13getting close there.
01:31:20And how much of a
01:31:21factor will that
01:31:22traffic be as
01:31:23here come the two
01:31:24leaders up on that
01:31:25battle?
01:31:26It will be a factor
01:31:27but they're going to
01:31:28be lapping fifth
01:31:29and sixth cars.
01:31:30That is quite
01:31:31something in a
01:31:32Grand Prix.
01:31:35When you consider
01:31:36just how comparable
01:31:37the cars really
01:31:38are.
01:31:39I just hope those
01:31:40flag wavers,
01:31:41quite profusely
01:31:42there for Schumacher
01:31:43for the guys to
01:31:44blue flag move
01:31:45over, you've got
01:31:46the faster car
01:31:47coming up behind.
01:31:48Because what
01:31:49invariably happens is
01:31:50the driver in front
01:31:51as Villeneuve will
01:31:52be, he'll assume
01:31:53they're waving the
01:31:54blue flag to allow
01:31:55Salo by.
01:31:56He won't realize
01:31:57that it's the
01:31:58leader of the race
01:31:59coming up.
01:32:00There's always the
01:32:01possibility too
01:32:02that one of the
01:32:03Ferrari engineers
01:32:04or team manager
01:32:05will have been
01:32:06down to Villeneuve's
01:32:07pit and said
01:32:08when you let our
01:32:09boy by please.
01:32:10And even as
01:32:11small as those
01:32:12mirrors are, red
01:32:13shows up pretty
01:32:14well.
01:32:15Yes, you haven't
01:32:16got too many
01:32:17excuses with red
01:32:18have you?
01:32:19It is difficult I
01:32:20believe when you
01:32:21see that McLaren
01:32:22coming.
01:32:23We've heard this
01:32:24before.
01:32:25It's very difficult
01:32:26because of the
01:32:27whites, the grey,
01:32:28the silver and the
01:32:29black.
01:32:30It just doesn't
01:32:31blend in that well
01:32:32or it blends in too
01:32:33well.
01:32:34You just don't
01:32:35pick it up in the
01:32:36mirror.
01:32:37Well you see that
01:32:38in photographs and
01:32:39in the race.
01:32:40Eight laps to go.
01:32:41Schumacher
01:32:42closing in on the
01:32:43fifth place battle.
01:32:44Taking those
01:32:45curves.
01:32:46You see the
01:32:47suspension just does
01:32:48not move as they go
01:32:49through.
01:32:50There are those
01:32:51famous end plates
01:32:52that cause I'll have
01:32:53the problem with
01:32:54last race.
01:32:55Now he's really
01:32:56catching them up now.
01:32:57We're going to do
01:32:58some moving in this
01:32:59lap.
01:33:00There's some Italians
01:33:01will be throwing
01:33:02rocks at these guys
01:33:03as they go around
01:33:04if they don't move
01:33:05over.
01:33:06Salo moving over
01:33:07as he has.
01:33:08Yes.
01:33:09Drops right in.
01:33:10He's not really in
01:33:11a position though to
01:33:12follow Schumacher
01:33:13through past
01:33:14Villeneuve.
01:33:15Ralf Schumacher
01:33:16was out with a
01:33:17fuel pressure pump.
01:33:18Well if he was out
01:33:19of gas those usually
01:33:20don't work.
01:33:21That's for sure.
01:33:22So but they say it
01:33:23was the fuel pump
01:33:24and not running out
01:33:25of gas.
01:33:26Of course that's
01:33:27Mika Salo
01:33:28allowing Mika
01:33:29Salo to get
01:33:30out of the
01:33:31gas.
01:33:32He's not
01:33:33really in a
01:33:34position though to
01:33:35follow Schumacher
01:33:36through past
01:33:37Villeneuve.
01:33:38So
01:33:39allowing Michael
01:33:40Schumacher through
01:33:41has given quite a
01:33:42big gap there
01:33:43between him and
01:33:44of course Villeneuve.
01:33:45And Jacques has
01:33:46let him through as
01:33:47well.
01:33:48And we thought
01:33:49that Hockenden
01:33:50that would be a
01:33:51good opportunity
01:33:52for him to close
01:33:53but he now has
01:33:54two lapped cars
01:33:55separating himself
01:33:56from Schumacher.
01:33:57Oh and he's
01:33:58catching up
01:33:59in a bad spot
01:34:00here.
01:34:01In a way
01:34:02I would feel
01:34:03that Mika
01:34:04he knows the
01:34:05riding is on the
01:34:06way.
01:34:07I mean it's an
01:34:08awful thing for a
01:34:09driver to think
01:34:10that.
01:34:11But I mean the
01:34:12seven laps to go
01:34:13he's got to make
01:34:14up the three seconds.
01:34:15He's not going to
01:34:16take any chances
01:34:17because my goodness
01:34:18McLaren needs some
01:34:19points.
01:34:20Not only for him
01:34:21but for the
01:34:22constructors.
01:34:23So I believe he's
01:34:24not going to make a
01:34:25fool of himself
01:34:26and get involved
01:34:27with anybody.
01:34:28Plus Mika
01:34:29doesn't very often
01:34:30get involved with
01:34:31cars and sort of
01:34:32have punch-ups
01:34:33which you know
01:34:34could damage his
01:34:35ability to get
01:34:36the leaders past.
01:34:37You can see how
01:34:38much that's cost him.
01:34:39Now as Hockenden
01:34:40works his way by
01:34:41Villeneuve.
01:34:42But Villeneuve had to
01:34:43back off as well
01:34:44there so Salo
01:34:45would probably get
01:34:46a little bit back
01:34:47through these next
01:34:48couple of corners
01:34:49through momentum.
01:34:50And now the two
01:34:51leaders have a bit
01:34:52of clear sailing.
01:34:53It's going to be
01:34:54quite a ways before
01:34:55they catch up
01:34:56Rubens Barrichello
01:34:57if indeed they do
01:34:58before this race
01:34:59ends.
01:35:00There have to be
01:35:01other lapped cars
01:35:02though so that
01:35:03could still be a
01:35:04factor.
01:35:05At San Marino
01:35:06Schumacher
01:35:07this is his
01:35:08ninth start
01:35:09so in eight races
01:35:10he's had two wins
01:35:11four second place
01:35:12finishes
01:35:13six out of eight
01:35:14in the front two
01:35:15spots.
01:35:16Pretty impressive
01:35:17record including
01:35:18last year's victory.
01:35:19Mika
01:35:20Hockenden
01:35:21who you see
01:35:22bouncing over the
01:35:23curbing
01:35:24has not won.
01:35:25And
01:35:26now Villeneuve
01:35:27has to
01:35:28get back
01:35:29into the lead
01:35:30position.
01:35:31And
01:35:32Villeneuve
01:35:34at this racetrack.
01:35:35Another little gem
01:35:36of information
01:35:37is the fact
01:35:38that
01:35:39if
01:35:40Schumacher
01:35:41gets the fastest
01:35:42lap which he has
01:35:43at this time
01:35:44he will equal
01:35:45Alan Cross's
01:35:46record
01:35:47of all time
01:35:4841 fastest
01:35:49laps.
01:35:50Which is amazing
01:35:51really.
01:35:52You would have
01:35:53thought it would
01:35:54have been probably
01:35:55Ayrton Senna
01:35:56that would have had that.
01:35:57Senna of course
01:35:58won here three times
01:35:59because this track
01:36:00claimed his life
01:36:01in 1994
01:36:02a shadow
01:36:03a cloud
01:36:04that permanently
01:36:05hangs over this
01:36:06circuit
01:36:07in the minds
01:36:08of all
01:36:09Formula 1
01:36:10fans.
01:36:11Michael
01:36:12Schumacher
01:36:13leads Mika
01:36:14Hockenden
01:36:15by 2.4
01:36:16seconds.
01:36:17McLaren
01:36:18is third
01:36:19Ferrari
01:36:20fourth
01:36:21and BAR
01:36:22fifth.
01:36:23You are
01:36:24watching
01:36:25Formula 1
01:36:26on Fox
01:36:27Sportsnet.
01:36:28Sportsnet
01:36:29coverage
01:36:30of the
01:36:31Grand Prix
01:36:32of San
01:36:33Marino
01:36:34where
01:36:35Michael
01:36:36Schumacher
01:36:37attempting to
01:36:38win his
01:36:39and Ferrari's
01:36:40third in a row
01:36:41leads Mika
01:36:42Hockenden
01:36:43who is
01:36:44hoping to
01:36:45score his
01:36:46first points
01:36:47of the season
01:36:48still with
01:36:49time perhaps
01:36:50to close in
01:36:51on Schumacher.
01:36:52Hockenden
01:36:53got the
01:36:54quickest lap
01:36:55at 26.7
01:36:56Schumacher
01:36:57had just done
01:36:58it before
01:36:59at 26.78
01:37:00so they're
01:37:01really pressing on
01:37:02towards the end
01:37:03of this race.
01:37:04Hockenden
01:37:05trying to
01:37:06just showing
01:37:07that he still
01:37:08has that ability
01:37:09with that car
01:37:10to clock in
01:37:11the quickest
01:37:12times.
01:37:13Now David
01:37:14Coulthard
01:37:15is 46
01:37:16seconds behind
01:37:17the leader
01:37:18and he is
01:37:19driven away
01:37:20from Rubens
01:37:21Barrichello.
01:37:22Barrichello
01:37:23is 20
01:37:24seconds back
01:37:25of David
01:37:26Coulthard.
01:37:27Everyone
01:37:28else
01:37:29are all
01:37:30a lap
01:37:31behind Schumacher.
01:37:32That's what a
01:37:33torrid pace
01:37:34that he and
01:37:35Mika Hockenden
01:37:36have set this
01:37:37afternoon.
01:37:38The Ferrari
01:37:39crowds were
01:37:40not that far
01:37:41from Maranello
01:37:42from where the
01:37:43Ferrari factory
01:37:44is.
01:37:45Great enthusiasm
01:37:46when we go to
01:37:47Silverstone of course
01:37:48we won't be far
01:37:49from the McLaren
01:37:50factory.
01:37:51So there'll be
01:37:52a lot of British
01:37:53fans there
01:37:54supporting the
01:37:55McLaren Mercedes
01:37:56team.
01:37:57And naturally
01:37:58McLaren do
01:37:59a tremendous
01:38:00amount of
01:38:01testing and
01:38:02development work
01:38:03at Silverstone.
01:38:04Mika Hockenden
01:38:05led from the
01:38:06pole.
01:38:07Led until
01:38:08that second
01:38:09pit stop.
01:38:10He handed
01:38:11over to
01:38:12Schumacher
01:38:13who got a
01:38:14really quick
01:38:15second stop
01:38:16combined with
01:38:17some blistering
01:38:18laps at the
01:38:19end of his
01:38:20second segment.
01:38:21And here is the
01:38:22gap as it
01:38:23stands with the
01:38:24laps winding
01:38:25down.
01:38:26And there's a
01:38:27comparison of the
01:38:28last three laps.
01:38:29And you can see
01:38:30that Hockenden
01:38:31has turned it
01:38:32up.
01:38:33On two of those
01:38:34three laps he's
01:38:35been quicker than
01:38:36Schumacher.
01:38:37But remember
01:38:38it was 1976
01:38:39the last time
01:38:40Ferrari won
01:38:41three races
01:38:42in a row.
01:38:43And what a
01:38:44place to
01:38:45three-peat
01:38:46Imolo.
01:38:47With all the
01:38:48Tifosi on the
01:38:49hillsides.
01:38:50If it all
01:38:51happens for
01:38:52Schumacher.
01:38:53And
01:38:54there's
01:38:55the
01:38:56gap.
01:38:57If it
01:38:58all
01:38:59happens for
01:39:00Schumacher.
01:39:01The good
01:39:02news for
01:39:03McLaren would
01:39:04be that they
01:39:05put both cars
01:39:06in the points
01:39:07today.
01:39:08Second and
01:39:09third.
01:39:10Now don't
01:39:11forget after the
01:39:12checkered flag
01:39:13we'll have the
01:39:14presentation of
01:39:15trophies.
01:39:16With a spray
01:39:17of champagne
01:39:18and the
