00:00A long time ago, there was a different place.
00:20Hundreds of millions of years before the dinosaurs.
00:26The Earth was filled with oceans filled with life.
00:32Life was formed in simple organisms, phytoplankton and algae.
00:40Those simple organisms convert their energy into chemical energy.
00:48They consume their own carbon dioxide and oxygen.
00:54At the end of the day, the carbon dioxide is absorbed by the sediments.
01:00The heat and pressure of those small organisms is used in the ocean.
01:10About 150 years ago, people began to work in the field and extract that oil.
01:17This is the period when the world changed dramatically.
01:22The oil is the lifeblood of our society.
01:26Every part of our life is made from oil.
01:29It heals us. It makes us stronger.
01:33It brings us to where we need to go.
01:36But there are problems with our use of oil.
01:41Serious problems.
01:52What's your name?
02:15My name is Josh Tickle.
02:17I've spent my life searching for solutions to these problems.
02:20This is my story.
02:22America is rich in oil.
02:26It is imported from unstable places in the world.
02:3380% of the world's oil reserves are in poor countries.
02:38These are the countries that dictate our economic stability.
02:42This is the military complex of the oil industry.
02:45They fight for oil.
02:47We are dealing with a shortage of energy reserves, which are our economy.
02:52I should be able to do this. This is not my problem. It's yours.
02:58What would you like, sir?
03:00Can I get a medium-sized pint? And do you have a bottle of oil, please?
03:04What do you mean, sir?
03:06You know, the use of oil is not a problem.
03:09It's not a problem.
03:11It's not a problem.
03:13It's not a problem.
03:15It's not a problem.
03:17It's not a problem.
03:19It's not a problem.
03:21It's not a problem.
03:23It's not a problem.
03:25What do you mean, sir?
03:27You know, the use of oil is not a problem.
03:30All right, where can I get you?
03:32You know, you guys...
03:34Yeah, I just wondered if I could get all of it.
03:38Yeah.
03:39I don't know about that.
03:46I was born in 1975 in Melbourne, Australia.
03:49My mother is from Louisiana and has French origins.
03:53My father was a very poor kid from Australia.
03:56My mother and I used to go to school by bicycle.
03:59You know, Australia has a very poor nature with wild animals.
04:02They have kangaroos and iguanas.
04:04You see them everywhere.
04:06I used to play with them.
04:08We had a lot of cheesing and chasing them.
04:10They were just wonderful animals.
04:12We used to do whatever we wanted.
04:14My parents and friends did whatever we wanted.
04:16I mean, they just never worried about us.
04:20Over time, my mother became more and more interested in America.
04:24She was just one of a kind.
04:26She was just one of a kind.
04:28In the United States, she was just one of a kind.
04:31Eventually, my mother and I decided to go to the United States
04:35together with my mother and I.
04:42There was a lot of refineries everywhere.
04:47We couldn't swim in the ocean like we do in Australia.
04:50We couldn't fish in the ocean like we do in Australia.
04:53There were signs that said,
04:55toxic smell and signs that said,
04:57don't swim or don't fish.
04:59I was really into my own world
05:01and started experimenting with nature.
05:05My high school diploma
05:07was supposed to study the oil basins in the area where I lived.
05:10And the test results came out
05:12that there were a large percentage of oil and mercury
05:15in the area that shouldn't exist in the oil basins.
05:18My subject was taken to the commission.
05:20And one of the directors of the commission
05:22told me that they wanted to disqualify me.
05:24I said, well, I work for the Environmental Protection Agency
05:27and we've done all of the actual analysis
05:29and your results are incredibly different.
05:32And what I'm most proud of is that
05:34the Environmental Protection Agency for Louisiana
05:36has taken 90% of its funding
05:38from foundations that deal with oil companies.
05:41The agency that is supposed to protect people
05:43is financed by the company that is supposed to protect people.
05:46By the industry it's supposed to protect people from.
05:55It was during my time at university
05:57that I went to Europe,
05:59in the framework of a project
06:01to clean up stainless steel reservoirs.
06:03I began to work on organic farms.
06:05These people didn't really care about their fields and their nature.
06:08Everything was part of a system.
06:10One day, a farmer came to me and said,
06:12I need some oil for my tractor.
06:14I said, it's biodiesel.
06:16He said, it's biodiesel.
06:18By the way, I'm talking about the tractor
06:20and the machines with the carbon dioxide
06:22that we've grown ourselves.
06:24Fueled by crops that we've grown ourselves.
06:26I didn't have any money to buy anything.
06:28You know, there it is.
06:30It's biodiesel.
06:32If I could sell this carbon dioxide in America
06:34and put it into use,
06:36it could change the world.
06:41I couldn't wait to get to the United States.
06:44How is it possible that engines work with biodiesel?
06:47How is it possible?
06:49And then I found out about Dr. Rudolf Diesel,
06:52who had experimented with diesel engines,
06:54but who also worked with biodiesel.
06:56This experiment was done 110 years ago.
06:58That's where I got the idea.
07:00And I bought a car with a diesel engine,
07:02which I experimented with.
07:04And I started experimenting with biodiesel.
07:06And I learned that you can produce biodiesel
07:08from any type of sunflower oil,
07:10soybean, soy, vegetable, etc.
07:12But sunflower oil is quite expensive.
07:14I mean, it gets to $1 a liter.
07:16So how can you make biodiesel
07:18from a better quality of sunflower oil?
07:24My plan was to take the car
07:26and go to the United States
07:28and have it run on biodiesel
07:30that would be produced by fast-food restaurants.
07:32At one point, I was going to convince people
07:34not to use biodiesel.
07:36So I talked to some of my friends
07:38and we set down a plan.
07:40We sketched out a plan,
07:42which would take the sunflower oil
07:44from the restaurants' warehouses,
07:46mix it with alcohol or caustic,
07:48and produce biodiesel from it.
07:50The plan was called the Green Sunflower Engine.
07:52Every day on our show,
07:54we're going to examine a small part
07:56of the American diet.
07:58Today, we're going to talk about
08:00what we can do with the benefits
08:02of a fast-food diet.
08:04Why?
08:08You're that baby man.
08:10He's got a car that runs on green.
08:12I saw you in the program yesterday.
08:14A side of fries and a burger, please.
08:16People would see the veggie van
08:18and they'd go,
08:20it won't belong to your family.
08:22All right.
08:24Taking a trip in the veggie van.
08:30And they'd ask questions.
08:32People were interested.
08:54It took me two years
08:56to promote biodiesel.
08:58I did hundreds of interviews
09:00on television, radio, newspaper, magazine.
09:02I wrote two books
09:04and published them
09:06all around the world.
09:08But it didn't happen with biodiesel.
09:10I mean, it happened a few years later.
09:16It was almost like
09:18I hadn't done anything.
09:20And then...
09:24Oh, my God!
09:26Oh, my God!
09:28Oh, my God!
09:30Oh, my God!
09:32Oh, my God!
09:36Everyone remembers
09:38where they were that day.
09:40We were all in a state of shock.
09:44A clinician, 15 or 19,
09:46got on the plane
09:48and left Saudi Arabia,
09:50heading for the largest oil field
09:52in the world.
09:54We may never know,
09:56but we all remember
09:58what happened next.
10:00Is there no choice
10:02in the world
10:04to lead to this?
10:10The only way
10:12to find a solution
10:14is to go around the globe.
10:16And I had a pretty good idea
10:18when I started looking.
10:20There we are,
10:22the world's largest oil field.
10:32I think it helped us
10:34remember what the real world was.
10:36The first place I wanted to go
10:38was my house.
10:40When I was young,
10:42I used to stay at my uncle's.
10:44It was well-deserved.
10:46I used to go there,
10:48eat fish and drink wine.
10:50In Festa,
10:52we used to sing and dance.
10:54The cake and sundae
10:56was my favorite food.
10:58We had guasca,
11:00croquettes, gumbo,
11:02everything we could catch
11:04at the bar.
11:06That was the staple
11:08of our diet.
11:12God didn't give us
11:14Louisiana,
11:16Florida,
11:18or Colorado.
11:20He gave us dead dinosaur fossils.
11:22He gave us a Jurassic Park
11:24and gas,
11:26from which we built
11:28a gigantic plant
11:30and an entire industry.
11:32Louisiana produces more gas
11:34than any other United States.
11:36We have 150 petrochemical plants
11:38in an area of 150 kilometers.
11:40The refineries in Zea
11:42hold the oil in the distillation towers.
11:44The oil wells condense
11:46to form oil and gas.
11:48The toxic chemicals
11:50produced by the process
11:52surround the area
11:54as well as the refineries
11:56in a contaminated area.
11:58When you pass Nathan
12:00by car,
12:02you feel like you're in
12:04a United States city.
12:06The towers are very high,
12:08the columns and the deposits
12:10are gigantic.
12:12Their purpose is to produce
12:14not only petroleum,
12:16but also gas products
12:18like gasoline,
12:20airplane fuel, plastic,
12:22chlorine, ammonia, nitrates,
12:24fertilizers, PVC.
12:26That's the third
12:28fraction of the oil barrel.
12:30That's the third fraction
12:32of the oil barrel.
12:34That's the third fraction
12:36of the oil barrel.
12:38That's the third fraction
12:40of the oil barrel.
12:42That's the third fraction
12:44of the oil barrel.
12:46That's the third fraction
12:48of the oil barrel.
12:50That's the third fraction
12:52of the oil barrel.
12:54That's the third fraction
12:56of the oil barrel.
12:58That's the third fraction
13:00of the oil barrel.
13:02That's the third fraction
13:04of the oil barrel.
13:06That's the third fraction
13:08of the oil barrel.
13:10That's the third fraction
13:12of the oil barrel.
13:14That's the third fraction
13:16of the oil barrel.
13:18That's the third fraction
13:20of the oil barrel.
13:22That's the third fraction
13:24of the oil barrel.
13:26That's the third fraction
13:28of the oil barrel.
13:30That's the third fraction
13:32of the oil barrel.
13:34That's the third fraction
13:36of the oil barrel.
13:38That's the third fraction
13:40of the oil barrel.
13:42That's the third fraction
13:44of the oil barrel.
13:46That's the third fraction
13:48of the oil barrel.
13:50That's the third fraction
13:52of the oil barrel.
13:54That's the third fraction
13:56of the oil barrel.
13:58That's the third fraction
14:00of the oil barrel.
14:02That's the third fraction
14:04of the oil barrel.
14:06They call on people
14:08to go out of their homes
14:10and shut their doors
14:12and close their doors
14:14and windows and try
14:16to seal them up with tape.
14:18Our community is polluted
14:20by an oil refinery
14:22and a waste disposal plant
14:24on a superfund site.
14:26As a result,
14:28our entire community
14:30as well as the community
14:32became polluted.
14:34This has been documented
14:36by the EPA.
14:38When you take a look
14:40at the reports
14:42about these accidents,
14:44you see that they are
14:46between 200 and 300 a year.
14:48We've had continuous studies
14:50about these problems,
14:52but they've never been published.
14:54They think they've seen something.
14:56They think they've seen something.
14:58The facts about working
15:00with PVC is another matter.
15:02PVC is not toxic.
15:04These are all the documents
15:06that say if we don't
15:08report these accidents,
15:10they are documented
15:12as evidence of a conspiracy
15:14by the industry
15:16to expose the government
15:18to information
15:20with ethical conspiracy
15:22on the part of industry
15:24to withhold vital information
15:26from the government.
15:28Don't you know
15:30children are born here
15:32and they are born in polluted waters?
15:34They should have been
15:36treated with care
15:38for both of our children
15:40and they should have been
15:42sent away from this country.
15:44They hurt people's lives
15:46and they don't want to know
15:48about this.
15:50One thing that started
15:52to be made clear
15:54was that the EPA
15:56was telling me about
15:58reproductive problems
16:00and spontaneous abortions
16:02and there was an increase
16:04in reproductive problems,
16:06miscarriages,
16:08a higher rate of miscarriages.
16:10Did your husband work here?
16:12Yes, he worked here.
16:14We haven't been able
16:16to have children.
16:18We're not able to have kids.
16:22She was born in 1988.
16:24She was living on a foot
16:26and she had cancer.
16:28She was very sick.
16:30On the New York Times,
16:32she was writing
16:34Greenpeace's proclamation
16:36and the banner's read
16:38Cancer Alley.
16:40This section of Louisiana
16:42has the highest number
16:44of cases of cancer
16:46in the United States.
16:48People were sick
16:50and they were left
16:52in the state
16:54with the privilege
16:56to have two wonderful sons
17:00but they died of miscarriages.
17:06Here, the production
17:08of gas costs a lot of money
17:10but the company has to pay
17:12the cost of the people
17:14leaving.
17:16They have to pay
17:18for the people
17:20leaving.
17:22Why do people
17:24ask me to do this job?
17:26Do I have to tell you
17:28the truth?
17:30Do I have to tell you
17:32that you are the owner
17:34of the gas company?
17:36Do I have to tell you
17:38that you were the owner
17:40of the gas company?
17:42There's a cancer boulevard
17:44in New Jersey, in California
17:46and there's a cancer boulevard
17:48in Nigeria.
17:50Those people suffer just as much.
18:20Henry Ford
18:22Henry Ford,
18:24the visionary father
18:26of the modern car industry
18:28was born in a farm
18:30on the outskirts of Detroit.
18:32Maybe that's the reason
18:34he designed the T-model
18:36which will work with ethanol,
18:38a fuel produced
18:40by the fermented meat industry.
18:42Ford, which works with alcohol,
18:44makes 20% of the market
18:46in the Midwest
18:48John Rockefeller,
18:50the founder of Standard Oil,
18:52signed an amendment
18:54to prohibit the production
18:56of alcohol in the United States
18:58including ethanol.
19:02For 12 to 30 years
19:04Ford continues to produce
19:06cars that work with ethanol.
19:08But in the end,
19:10when the prohibition law was lifted
19:12President Theodore Roosevelt
19:14wrote Standard Oil
19:16as the only oil company
19:18in the United States
19:20to be able to produce
19:22cars that work with ethanol.
19:24For 88 years,
19:26the two largest companies,
19:28Passar and Acai,
19:30Exxon and Mobil,
19:32have been working together
19:34to create a global corporation
19:36that profits more than
19:38all of the cars produced
19:40by the United States.
19:42They say,
19:44in order to meet
19:46market demands,
19:48people need Hummer and Yukon.
19:50We sell these cars
19:52because this is the demand.
19:54They pay the millions of dollars
19:56they have spent on advertising
19:58to convince people
20:00to buy only Hummer or Yukon.
20:02There is a law that says
20:04that if you buy a car
20:06that weighs 6,000 tons
20:08or more,
20:10it is a part of the economy.
