00:06Smart Casual follows two couples who travel equal and opposite paths in their search to
00:10find love.
00:12The first couple includes Taki, a mid-30s photographer who is set on having casual flings
00:16until he meets Tumi, who turns his world upside down.
00:19The second couple, Malatzy and Bika, who've been in a 12-year relationship with two postponed
00:24weddings make a third attempt at tying the knot, but Malatzy is at a crossroads, here's
00:28everything you need to know about the ending, just to let you know this video will contain
00:31spoilers.
00:33There are two different storylines that we're supposed to keep track of through the random
00:36cuts and jumps.
00:38The first follows Taki, a photographer and a playboy who's had his heart broken in love
00:42once and who makes it clear to every woman that he doesn't date.
00:45His life is pretty simple, hooking up, exercising, and showing the door to the women he brings
00:50home before leaving for work.
00:52A photographer by profession, Taki has made himself a classic playboy.
00:56All of it changes when he sees Tumi at a poetry session and instantly falls for her.
01:01His pursuit of Tumi's validation forces him to confront his own denials and insecurities,
01:05while both of their lives take an unexpected turn.
01:08On the other hand, there's Malatzy and Bika, two people who have been trying to get married
01:12for the third time.
01:14A group of filmmakers shoot their pre-wedding interviews, as Malatzy and Bika spend barely
01:18any time together if not sitting in front of the camera.
01:21Bika flees to his important meetings whenever he sees fit, and these meetings are for his
01:25mistress, whom he actually has feelings for.
01:28How Does Tumi Give Taki A Reality Check?
01:31Taki can't stop thinking about the girl he saw, and he's obsessing over her pictures,
01:35not knowing who she is.
01:37Just like the rest of the world, Joburg is a small place after all, and he sees Tumi
01:41again outside a cafe.
01:43They connect pretty quickly, and a dinner plan is made.
01:46Taki's, I don't date line isn't a big deal for Tumi, and she's secure knowing that people
01:51who don't have love to give can't know what it feels like.
01:54They hook up nonetheless, and Taki finally feels happy and complete.
01:58That changes soon, when Tumi receives a call and makes dinner plans with her boyfriend.
02:03Taki reacts like he's been cheated on, and Tumi explains that she's in an open relationship.
02:08He thinks open relationships only happen in movies, so that's the standard for being a
02:12playboy in Johannesburg.
02:14Taki stops talking to Tumi soon and shifts his focus to other women, literally on the
02:18same day.
02:19Does Malatzy Accept Bika's Cheating?
02:22Bika keeps postponing his interviews for the wedding film.
02:25He comes back to Malatzy, acting sweet and caring, but as soon as she forgives him, he's
02:29back to being his usual self.
02:32Bika is a typical man who thinks he's doing his part by providing, and he's allowed to
02:35get away with anything he wants.
02:38Malatzy tries to humble him, but Bika's ego won't let him hear a word she says.
02:42Bika disrespects the wedding filmmaker, Tresser, and thinks it's not even a real job.
02:48Malatzy keeps making excuses for him, but how far would a person go to justify their
02:51partner's hurtful actions?
02:53One of Malatzy's friends suggests that she should adapt to Bika's cheating situation
02:57and do just the same to him.
02:59Malatzy is too proud for that, she still gives Bika chances to redeem himself.
03:04Why Can't Taki Move On From Tumi?
03:06The women keep changing in Taki's life, from models to artists, he goes into bed with everyone
03:11who's into him.
03:12Taki's emotional maturity is extremely low, and falling in love is scary for him.
03:17He thinks being vulnerable only leads to pain, and he's scared of getting hurt, just like
03:21babies are.
03:22Kat Lego, a woman he was involved with, asks him if he's jealous about her going out with
03:26another man.
03:28Taki very casually says that they're not dating, so he's okay with it.
03:32Kat Lego lashes out at him for being cruel and makes him understand how his approach
03:36is hurtful.
03:37Another woman Taki enjoyed spending time with ends up having a boyfriend and disappointing
03:41him.
03:42Taki has now begun to see how precious Tumi was to him, and she's not someone he can replace
03:46with someone else.
03:48Just then, Tumi drops a bomb on Taki and tells him she's pregnant with her boyfriend's baby.
03:53Tumi's boyfriend is the same person who is doing the wedding film for Malotzy and Bika.
03:58Does Malotzy get out of the abuse?
04:01Malotzy runs out of patience when Bika doesn't come to pick her up when he promised he would.
04:05She feels humiliated, and Bika tries to gaslight her like he always does.
04:10Malotzy calls him out on the cheating, but Bika denies it at first.
04:13He loses his cool pretty soon and blames her for being the reason behind it.
04:18He explains how she was a radiant, beautiful woman when they met, and now she's gotten
04:21too comfortable.
04:23Bika points out the burgers she eats, and the casual fat-shaming comments are really
04:27triggering.
04:28Bika thinks women need to do far more to keep a man, and this dynamic won't be any different.
04:33On the day of the wedding, Malotzy finally breaks free and ends the relationship.
04:37Bika begs for forgiveness, but Malotzy doesn't change her mind.
04:41Bika runs to his mistress, proudly confessing he has left his fiancée, only to find out
04:45the mistress has been cheating as well.
04:48Do Taki and Tumi end up together?
04:50Taki spends a few months reflecting on what Tumi said to him.
04:54He tries to change his lifestyle and address his emotional issues.
04:58He even starts to take therapy for better results.
05:01At a dinner with his best friend and his wife, Taki confesses his love for Tumi and how badly
05:06he wants her.
05:07He tries to contact Tumi, only to find out that she's blocked his number.
05:11Shaking in disbelief, he drinks the pain away.
05:15A few days later, he meets Tumi and asks her why they can't be together.
05:19Tumi refuses to believe that Taki has changed and that he's still not carrying his baggage.
05:24Tumi is a woman who understands herself and knows what's best for her, and she's not going
05:28to settle for anything less than that.
05:30Taki's broken heart is not the most important thing to Tumi, her and the baby's well-being
05:34are.
05:35Taki cries over the fact that he didn't even get a chance, but Tumi is clear that the chances
05:39we get in life are based on the life we live.
05:42She isn't ready to take a chance on a playboy who claims to have become a better person.
05:47Smart casuals manage to communicate the deep complexities we often bump into while approaching
05:51a relationship with a new person.
05:53Everyone is different, and if one loves the other, they manage to work their way according
05:57to the other's wants and needs.
05:59A relationship takes the same amount of effort from both parties, and don't let anyone tell
06:03you otherwise.
06:04The fact that Taki and Bika didn't get to be with the women they wanted to is only because
