La Salle coach hits new UAAP rule on eligibility
La Salle coach Topex Robinson finds the new UAAP eligibility rule for transferring student-athletes unfair, saying it limits their freedom to choose, especially when it comes to their academics. Transferring student-athletes will lose an additional one year of playing eligibility, making it two including their redshirt year as the league announced in a press conference in Quezon City on Sept. 4, 2024.

00:00Well, at the end of the day, I will abide by what the higher-ups would decide on.
00:08But as a person and not representing anybody, it's, I guess, unfair for a human being to choose,
00:15you know, to have the freedom to choose not only where his basketball will take him,
00:19but also for his higher education.
00:21I mean, because in that way, an athlete or a person or a child will have two different decisions.
00:29And at a very early age, you know, you get them out of high school,
00:34they don't really know what they're, what they want in life.
00:37I mean, that's just me as a human being.
00:40Just like me, when I came to college, I mean, I enrolled or I stayed on a course
00:46that after a few semesters, I didn't always like.
00:49So now, I mean, that's the only thing that will disappear, which is really important.
00:54I think, for me, it's the education.
00:58That's what I think, what is being deprived of.
01:02Because your mind will wander.
01:04I mean, again, at the end of the day, I will abide by the rules.
01:07But me as a human being, it's taking away the freedom of another human being to choose,
01:13you know, what kind of life that he wants.
01:17Because your choice to get a degree will be reduced.
01:21Again, that's just me as a person and not representing an institution.
01:26So for me, it's unfair for a child to lose the freedom to choose
01:32because of limitations that were given to me.
