00:0049ers scored on eight straight possessions at one point in the game.
00:04Purdy was terrific, I thought. The numbers aren't overly impressive, no touchdowns, no picks.
00:1219 for 29, 231, but total command made no mistakes.
00:18Jordan Mason, terrific. Debo Samuel, terrific.
00:22He looked terrific, too, Stein. He's shape-wise.
00:25Juwan Jennings was terrific, and the 49ers just played, to me, an all-around game.
00:32And that's exactly what you wanted after an offseason where they had some issues.
00:38And, you know, that win last night is exactly how you want to start a season
00:46if you have Super Bowl aspirations. There's just no doubt about it.
00:50And, Stein, I won't front. I've been worried all offseason,
00:53and you guys have been having fun with me about Chesky and I worrying,
00:57and this news about McCaffrey yesterday, but just to think about
01:01how close the Niners were to a Super Bowl. That's one.
01:04Why would I be—oh, you know what? That's one.
01:06Okay, that's one. Yeah.
01:08But this team is loaded. And, yeah, they're without Greenlaw, and McCaffrey didn't play.
01:13But Guy stepped up yesterday, and I've got to give credit to Nick Sorensen, Stein.
01:17That defense was getting after it. Fred Warner's pregame speech.
01:21But to go out there and ball and force that fumble on Brees Hall,
01:26who couldn't do much of nothing along with the Jets offense.
01:28And I'm going to give you your victory lap.
01:30Why?
01:31You said Aaron Rodgers at his age is not—you know, he can't—his legs aren't the same.
01:37And I know it was his first game in months.
01:40But, Stein, I saw a quarterback that couldn't do much getting out the pocket.
01:44And, man, maybe it's one game, four quarters, but the Niners were physical.
01:49They gave up a drive. I got concerned.
01:51But they were in a lot of zone.
01:52Covered three early for the Jets to go out down the field and score.
01:57But then they went man.
01:58And Lenore, Steine, and the rest of the gang got after it.
02:02Charverius, Ward.
02:03And they beat the Jets' ass.
02:06They're 1-0.
02:07Yeah, I thought Rodgers was average.
02:12But I agree with you.
02:13I don't think he looked overly mobile.
02:15It's his first game back.
02:16His coach said they couldn't get him comfortable.
02:22But the Niners have a lot to do with that, right?
02:24Yeah, sure.
02:27He didn't throw for a lot of yards.
02:29He didn't control the game.
02:31It looks like—I thought he was just a touch.
02:34Just a hair jittery.
02:36Just a little jittery.
02:37Just getting rid of the ball.
02:39Just a hair too soon, maybe.
02:41I don't know.
02:41I thought it was all about the 49ers last night.
02:46Moody, six field goals.
02:47You don't like—that's too many for my liking.
02:49Oh, I love it.
02:50But why do you love it?
02:52Because I have them on my fantasy team.
02:53No, well, there you go.
02:54But other than that, Steine, I do wonder if you had McCaffrey,
02:57would that have been four field goals?
02:59But I don't know.
03:00It's something to watch moving forward.
03:01But all in all, Frank Gore goes into the Niner Hall of Fame.
03:05You got to see the likes of Patrick Willis and the rest of the alumni there.
03:10And you go out and win a game that—Steine, I really—you left me.
03:14We parted ways.
03:15I really was concerned offensively.
03:18And Kyle Shanahan, you showed me.
03:20I just know how to do this.
03:22And whoever I have at my disposal, I know what to call.
03:25And we're going to be okay.
03:26So again, we don't know how long McCaffrey will be out.
03:29But Jordan Mason, Steine, J.P. Mason, 28 carries.
03:33And he was physical.
03:368-8-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-7-0 is the number.
03:41Game one in the books for the Niners.
03:4232-19.
03:44They win impressively over the Jets.
03:47They did it without Christian McCaffrey.
03:49How are you feeling, 49er fans?
03:51It's been a long offseason.
03:53And you took care of business in week one against the New York Jets and Aaron Rodgers.
03:59You scored 32 points against the defense that's supposed to be one of the best in the league.
04:04You did not turn the ball over.
04:06The Jets turned it over twice.
04:09And everything was there in terms of the recipe for a big win.
04:15And that's what they did.
04:16They were down 7-3, and then they score eight consecutive times.
04:22So the San Francisco 49ers pick up pretty much where they left off last year.
04:28And a top-to-bottom, solid, solid performance.
04:33And how do you weigh the McCaffrey news?
04:37The McCaffrey injury?
04:38The fact that McCaffrey didn't play in the first game?
04:42Obviously, that's not a great sign by the same token.
04:46Maybe you look at it as though it's a blessing in disguise because now you got Mason who
04:51can pick up some of the load.
04:53You can take your time with Christian McCaffrey.
04:56You don't have to rush him back.
04:58But that offense didn't look a lot different to me with Mason than it did with McCaffrey.
05:04I'm not saying Mason's better than McCaffrey or anything like that.
05:08But the bottom line is, you watch a game last night like that, Kyle Shanahan, you give him
05:17any kind of talent, he's automatic.
05:21Ten wins.
05:22You gotta get ten wins.
05:23Yeah, I'm signing.
05:24Is that where you're going?
05:24I'm not mad at that.
05:26You are.
05:26And what about Debo, who had eight carries in the backfield?
05:31I know all offseason, Stein, that we talked about, and I wasn't, I was not mocking the
05:37people in the reports that, oh, he looks like he's in shape.
05:39They're football players.
05:40You know, you gotta really do some, not do some stuff to not be in shape.
05:44But all offseason, that was the one constant that was being reported.
05:48And Debo told us, you know, what this year meant to him.
05:50And Stein, he looked physical.
05:52He looked fast.
05:53He had eight carries, only 23 yards, but he got a touchdown.
05:58He reminded me of what the offense was pre-McCaffrey, where it was Debo-centric, and that's just
06:06another facet to this offense until McCaffrey can heal.
06:10But you're right, partner.
06:11I just, I turned that game off and then left the stadium like, he's already done it without
06:17McCaffrey.
06:18He's done it with Jimmy.
06:19He's done, like, Kyle Shanahan is special, Stein.
06:22That's all I guess I'm trying to say to you, man.
06:23And I wouldn't want anybody else outside of Andy Reid controlling my offense or calling
06:29it.
06:30And my last thing, Stein, he doesn't look like he needs, and I know McCaffrey's the
06:33MVP and badass, he doesn't need Earl Campbell.
06:36He doesn't need the cream of the crop player to still get, you know, to maximize an offense
06:41to move the ball.
06:43888-957-9570 is the number.
06:47If you're a 49er fan, you gotta be super excited tonight.
06:52Or this morning, I should say.
06:54Your team dominated the New York Jets opening week.
06:58Dominated.
06:59You had an offense, or an offseason rather, that was a little bit shaky according to many.
07:04Trent Williams, Brandon Ayoub missed large chunks of training camp.
07:09McCaffrey's a little banged up, but this team didn't skip one beat.
07:13And all systems go after week one.
07:16I don't think there's any doubt about it.
07:18That game was, you know, 7-3 at one point, and after that touchdown that the Jets got,
07:24it was all San Francisco.
07:26And offensively, defensively, they look like they're ready to go, as Deebo Samuel would
07:32say.
07:32Yeah, and that drive you talk about by the Jets, Donny, that had me like, uh-oh.
07:38Well, uh-oh, I'm a little worried.
07:3912 plays, 70 yards.
07:40The Niners were in a lot of zone, and the great Aaron Rodgers, as we all know, can pick
07:45apart a zone.
07:46But then after that, Sorensen and the defense made adjustments, Donny, and I saw a lot of
07:50man coverage, and they start getting after Rodgers, and good God, they were, both lines
07:57of scrimmage, the Niners dominated.
07:59We had mentioned the rookie on the offensive line, Poonie, Donny, he handled his business.
08:04They didn't allow a lot of pressures at all, and Trent Williams looked like he hadn't skipped
08:08a beat.
08:10No, they were clicking on all cylinders, absolutely, positively.
08:148-8-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-7-0 is the number, and 49er fans, how do you kind of, let's say,
08:26compartmentalize?
08:27On the one hand, it was a great debut, you're 1-0, everything looks solid.
08:32Yeah.
08:33On the other hand, you get this issue with McCaffrey and a calf-slash-Achilles, Adam
08:38Schefter, before the game last night, was talking about how nothing's guaranteed for
08:44next week against the Minnesota Vikings, so this is something that I think we're going
08:49to have to monitor, obviously, and I guess my question to 49er fans is, should we allow
08:59Daryl the Guru Johnson to take a victory lap?
09:02He was worried all offseason about McCaffrey, and the injury, and the calf, and the Achilles,
09:11and he kept worrying, and I told him, chill out, can he take a victory lap now that McCaffrey
09:17has missed the first game of the year, or is McCaffrey going to be fine?
09:25You know, I remember when the Warriors were at the top of their game, and they had
09:31Bogut, right, and Iguodala, and they basically said, hey guys, just relax, just relax until
09:40January, just relax, and that's where the Niners are at right now.
09:46Absolutely, there's no rush to get McCaffrey back, get Mason touches.
09:50They had it, this is week one, and I don't want to, this is not a happy victory lap,
09:56I'll take it, but anytime you got an explosive player that's pushing off, and cutting, and
10:02changing direction, the calf is everything.
10:04What I'm concerned about is what happened after the game when poor J.P. Mason was put
10:09in a situation to where the reporters turned police, or Gestapo, they were acting like
10:15he had said something wrong, and all he was saying was his truth.
10:18He said he was told Friday, Friday, shout out Ice Cube, he was going to start.
10:24Then they went back to Kyle, and Evan did a great job asking questions after the game.
10:29He talked to Aaron Rodgers, but my point is, Donnie, there are reports out there that this
10:33injury happened week 17 last year, and that would explain maybe why he wasn't explosive
10:41in the playoffs, McCaffrey.
10:43My thing is, I'm not going to overreact, but Mark Willard, if you're listening, you're
10:48our brother, we left a crossover yesterday, and you said, guys, you know what, when you
10:53look around the NFC West, you know, teams lost.
10:56It was win-loss kind of conversation, but everything's okay, and we talked about Nakua,
11:01who was going to miss four weeks, but Stiney, now this injury, I'm not saying it's going
11:06to stop the Niners, but I am intrigued, Don, as we go further down the road, when do you
11:13test it?
11:14When are you confident enough to say, hey, Stiney, go out there and try to run on it?
11:19So that's what I'm looking at, and the Niners handled their business.
11:22That's all they can do.
11:23Who's going to be the backup to J.P. Mason, or is he going to get 28 to 30 carries?
11:28The backup to the backup?
11:29Is that what we're worried about?
11:31Are we going to get a change of pace back?
11:32I don't know, Dorindo.
11:34We don't need a change of pace, Pat.
11:34But these are questions that have to be answered moving forward.
11:37I think we've gotten the answer.
11:39I think Jordan Mason's going to play and carry the ball a lot when McCaffrey's not there.
11:43Yeah, that, I guess, real quick, that's a good job, Stiney.
11:45Yeah.
11:46When you say when he's not there, how long is all I'm asking?
11:49It doesn't matter right now.
11:50It doesn't matter.
11:51It doesn't matter right now.
11:52If he's out a game or two, he's out a game or two.
11:54If he's out six games, he's out six games.
11:56Because it didn't matter last night.
11:57You're right.
11:58The goal is to get him healthy midseason or later.
12:01Wow.
12:02And the bottom line is he came in, he said he didn't feel right.
12:07All right, take the day off.
12:09All right.
12:09Hey, this team is a little bit older.
12:11You're going to have to make those kind of adjustments, perhaps.
12:14But I, listen, you may be a football expert and can tell me different,
12:20but that team looked exactly like they look with McCaffrey last night.
12:25Now, I don't know about the six field goals, though, Stiney.
12:27What about Red Zone?
12:28That's too many.
12:2932 points.
12:30Well, could there be?
12:31I'm just asking.
12:31I'm not going to do that today.
12:32I'm not asking you to do it.
12:34I will.
12:35Can there be a correlation of you missing your best offensive player
12:38to why you kicked six field goals?
12:40No, I don't think so.
12:40OK, that's you.
12:41Yeah, I don't think so.
12:42I don't think it's different.
12:43Yeah, I'm not going to talk about, you know, 32 points isn't enough now.
12:49Well, I'm not saying that.
12:51I'm just saying.
12:52Six field goals is too many, no matter who you are.
12:54You covered, I mean, if you told Kyle Shanahan that every week he'll get six field goals
13:00and two touchdowns, he's going to take it.
13:03He'll take 32 a game.
13:05Any way you can get it.
13:08And I don't see how Jordan Mason was the reason they didn't get into the end zone more.
13:14Right.
13:14I mean, he was their best offensive player.
13:18Just real quick here.
13:18McCaffrey's dynamics, Donnie, not just in the backfield, but catching the ball, too.
13:23And I just wonder not having them.
13:25Did that happen?
13:26If you won, were they able to keep them out of the end zone?
13:29No.
13:29What?
13:30Like Mason scored.
13:32OK, I can't.
13:33You can't get you can't be serious about.
13:35No, six field goals is too many.
13:37It's one game.
13:38OK, but just give me the win for six field goals is not idea.
13:42Yeah, you won the game.
13:43But when you're not with your best player and you just come in here and say,
13:46oh, it doesn't mean that Mason look great.
13:48I'm with you.
13:49But there has to be a correlation.
13:50Maybe just maybe that you didn't have your best weapon.
13:54And that's why he settled for six field goals.
13:56That's all.
13:56You got to have a hundred early.
13:58They had a hundred and eighty rushing yards.
14:02When you got in the red zone, seven, four point seven yards.
14:06I mean, I can't I can't I can't just assume that with McCaffrey, they would have scored 44.
14:12And again, I mean, that victory, if you give it a grade on a scale of one to ten,
14:19not going to give it a nine to come out and start the season.
14:24And also, they you know, if you're going to
14:26they scored on eight straight possessions at one point in that game.
14:31Touchdowns are why they didn't win the Super Bowl.
14:33They couldn't get in.
14:34And all I'm pointing out is your nine.
14:37I'll give you a nine, too.
14:39I'm just saying, Stoney, as we get further down the road,
14:41this team has too much weaponry.
14:44I want to see more Kittle and they're settling for field goals.
14:47It's one game, but I can't sit here and say,
14:49oh, McCaffrey had no impact on you settling for six field goals.
14:54I just I'm just surprised that that's what you would
14:59kind of emphasize a game after a day after that.
15:03You know, they beat a team that's supposed to be pretty good by 13 points.
15:06They dominated start to finish.
15:10Yeah. Should they have scored more points?
15:12I don't know.
15:13I mean, what if we find out that the Jets defense is so good that.
15:19Getting six getting six field goals and 32 points against them
15:23is going to be the most points they've given up this year.
15:25Let's let's take a look at how good that Jets defense was as the season goes on.
15:31Eight, eight, nine, five, seven, nine, five, seven, zero is the number.
15:37Let's go to let's go to Jeff.
15:40Jefferson Morin.
15:41What's up, Jeff?
15:41How you doing, man?
15:44Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call.
15:46So I called in yesterday and I was saying J.P. Mason would be the key to the game.
15:50And obviously he was.
15:53I think he's been terrific ever since he's been with the Niners.
15:56I have one question, though, which is, you know,
15:59Debo's dynamic and, you know, I get a little bit concerned
16:03where he's being used as a tailback so much.
16:05And the question I have is, what about Isaac Correndo?
16:09I was really hoping that, you know, when J.P. would go out for a breather,
16:14that they might put Correndo in who's, you know, what, six or 220 and runs a 4340.
16:20Is there an issue there?
16:22But why?
16:22Why not Correndo?
16:24Yeah, go ahead, Stani.
16:26I guess my question would be why Correndo when you got a guy who's
16:30dominating on the ground like Jordan Mason and Debo got eight carries.
16:34But Stani, three of those eight.
16:36I don't want to come across as a worry ward, but every time he gets hit
16:39and there are collisions with Debo because he's so physical.
16:43I'm like, is it worth it?
16:44And maybe that could have been Correndo.
16:46But Kyle's telling us to the caller's point, we appreciate it, Stani.
16:50I'm a one guy back.
16:51You know what I'm saying?
16:52When McCaffrey's out there, I'm not divvying up the carries.
16:55And when Mason's out there, he sets a record as far as the most carries
17:00on the ground from any back under Kyle.
17:02So, you know, I'm not going to sit here like you said, Stani.
17:05It was a great, excellent win.
17:07McCaffrey will be back.
17:09But I do wonder, like, is there going to be somebody to spell Mason
17:13if he's the back for the next two to three weeks?
17:16Because that's what the caller's point is.
17:18I mean, come on.
17:20So we got McCaffrey and everybody's worried about his workload.
17:24Gotta worry about his workload.
17:26Worry about his touches.
17:28OK, you know what?
17:29Let's get let's get Jordan Mason in here to take some of his touches away.
17:34Mason carries 28 times and now we're worried about Mason.
17:37Well, he's been featured back.
17:39That's why I got the 28.
17:40It's it's football.
17:42I mean, he's got to play.
17:43All right.
17:44JC is in the city.
17:46What's up, JC?
17:46How you doing, man?
17:48What's up, guys?
17:49How are you?
17:50Dynamite.
17:51Hey, look, this is this is tough dialogue to listen to.
17:58You know, Devo carrying the ball eight times.
18:00He makes 20 million dollars a year.
18:02He's a big percentage of the cap and we're complaining about using him.
18:06And, you know, we're just finding stuff to nitpick.
18:09Oh, you know, Jordan Mason, who's the backup to him?
18:12Who's this?
18:13Who's that?
18:13Like, just fake concerns and goo.
18:16It's you can't the field goal thing like let's look at what actually happened in the most
18:24unshocking turn of events.
18:26Brandon Iuke was not very sharp.
18:28He missed all training camp.
18:30Right.
18:30Dropped the touchdown in the end zone.
18:32Jordan Mason gets a run called back on a hold.
18:35Kyle Shanahan on fourth and one takes a field goal to make a 16 point game because the Jets
18:42can't move the ball against the Niners defense.
18:44So six field goals was like it's not a Christian McCaffrey problem.
18:48Why?
18:49They were settling for field goals.
18:50He wouldn't have changed any of those things.
18:53So what are we even talking about?
18:57I'll tell you what we're talking about.
18:58What we started the show with.
19:00It was a great win.
19:01I just pointed out that they had six field goals.
19:04That's all.
19:05Nobody's hating on the win.
19:06It was a great win.
19:07And when my best player hour before game time, who was supposed to, by all accounts, play
19:13does not play, you know, forgive me for worrying.
19:16That's all.
19:17And the Niners dominated.
19:20Christian McCaffrey isn't catching the ball for Brandon Iuke.
19:23And he's not the right tackle.
19:25Right.
19:25And he's not the game plan.
19:27So you can't say that the six field goals and Christian McCaffrey, they're two separate
19:33arguments.
19:34And you're making them conjointly.
19:38Thanks, JC.
19:39Appreciate the call.
19:41888-957-9570 is the number.
19:4549ers, 1-0, start the season with a solid victory over the New York Jets.
19:53They ran the ball well.
19:55They passed the ball efficiently.
19:57Their defense was very, very good.
20:00Aaron Rodgers didn't do much.
20:02Brees Hall didn't do much.
20:05Jets got a touchdown late that didn't really matter.
20:09I mean, to my way of thinking, absolutely a terrific opening game for the San Francisco
20:1649ers.
20:17And I think if you, if before the game, I think we found out about 90 minutes before
20:25the game that McCaffrey wasn't going to play.
20:27Yeah.
20:28And I'll bet you if you said, OK, McCaffrey's not going to play, we're going to score 32
20:32points.
20:33I got to believe you take that, Coop.
20:35Yeah, no doubt.
20:36And I would take it.
20:37And I would have thought maybe they don't get to 32.
20:39But I also got to do this, Stiney, because my theme all offseason was, what are they
20:45going to do without Greenlaw?
20:47Fred Warner was flying around, Stiney.
20:49I mean, number 54, it might be the best linebacker in the league.
20:53He's headed to be one of the best to put on a Niner uniform.
20:57But he set the tone.
20:58Seven solo tackles, the fumble early on Brees Hall, to me, set the tone.
21:04And I just don't want to leave the studio or station today and not give Nick Sorensen
21:09that defensive line.
21:11Campbell, Floyd, everybody was getting after it.
21:13But when you got two dogs on the outside, like Lenore and Ward, who went man, Stiney,
21:18they went man, kind of took Wilson out the game.
21:21I'm sitting here like, and Nick Bosa, yeah, you didn't get a sack, but you were making
21:27Aaron Rodgers get rid of the ball.
21:29I saw that with my own eye.
21:30Wasn't you just putting up sack numbers?
21:32And I'm sitting there like, talking to myself, why am I surprised by this performance when
21:39they, and I've said it, should have won the Super Bowl.
21:42So again, no Greenlaw, no McCaffrey, the Niners still kicked the Jets ass.
21:47It was a great win.
