00:00Stiney. Stiney, I watched. I've been watching the Super Bowl back and a million times. This
00:08is a quote from Guru during the break. Hey, Stiney, I gotta admit, Trent was being thrown
00:17around that game. He was. I watched it last night, brother. 11.20 p.m. Stiney, guy, that
00:25wasn't his best game by any stretch, man. Wow. Dudes with the left hand throwing him
00:30down. I'm like, Trent, what's going on? Kansas City, they were physical. Olivia knew John.
00:35He can't handle physicality? No, he can't. Most 36-year-olds can't. It's called perspective.
00:45My point is the Niners aren't sniffing a ball without Trent. Okay. Yeah. Hey, Trent, get
00:51to work. T.W. Get to work. So, no, I can't get a bet from you two that this is nothing
00:58a burger for Trent. He's going to get a raise. I'm not betting on that. I just made one bet
01:05today, and that is I don't think the IUC situation will be rectified by the end of our show.
01:11And I thought of it. I'm taking the bet back. Oh, there he goes. Yeah, you can't do a lot
01:17of stuff for content. Let's go to Big Smooth in the city. Hey, Big Smooth, how you doing,
01:24man? Long time, no hear from. But listen, man, as you guys are talking, this is all
01:29predicated on those three games, man. Listen, you know everyone's gassing him. Hey, come
01:34on back, Trent. We losing. We need you. He comes back. They start winning again. Now
01:38you're about to break pretty off. Yeah, I'm going to give it a try. On top of that, these
01:43veterans don't like camp anyway. Worst case scenario, I miss camp. But on the other side,
01:49he's going to come in out of shape. Just like all guys do on these long time track incursions.
01:54But I'm going to tell you this, man. Long term, the Niners need to get a replacement
01:59or start looking for his protege. Because if you don't, he can pull this off because
02:04you don't have anybody that's as good as him. And at 36, you surely need to start looking
02:10at that. He can do this every year. What are you going to do about it? No doubt. He'll
02:15do it every year. And so will Bosa. But all the teams in all sports are one injury away.
02:22Mahomes goes down, it's a wrap. Purdy goes down, well, you got Dobbs. You know what I
02:28mean? 36 year olds are more likely to go down. Yeah, J.J. McCarthy just tore his meniscus
02:33and he's a baby. But he's not asking for the kind of money that Trent Williams is asking
02:38for when his best days are behind him. I'm an all pro. Why are you? I'm not what I was
02:45at 26. That's why we're not going to pay you. But I'm still an all pro. Yeah, that's why
02:49you're making 22. That's why you're making 22 million this year. No, Trent Williams is
02:54like fine wine. No doubt about it. According to Goo. What was Kobe's wine? Vino? According
03:00to Daryl the Guru Johnson, in an honest moment, Trent was being thrown around that game.
03:08He had a bad game. That's all. Ponte and I, we've all said it. Everybody's talked about
03:13it. That was not his best work. And it wasn't Kyle's best work. Kyle's under contract for
03:19the next four years and he's not holding out. See what I'm saying? You don't care. I ran
03:24back. This is last night. Rob Lowe. I don't believe it. Come on now. I don't. Listen,
03:30I ran back the coin flip. Dude, that gets more amazing by the day. The fact that the
03:37Niners didn't know the rules. Is that why they lost? But no, but you should have. It's
03:42not why they lost, but it's something fun. You can blame Kyle Shanahan on for the rest
03:46of his career. Ball first. That's all. Possibly. Kyle, that was a blunder. Oh boy. Come on
03:56Jerry Rice. Be right now. Dude, I don't know why he did that. He had to be sipping. If
04:03he's wrong, he had to be sipping. Just wanted to get more. What was Philip Pony doing? Oh
04:09boy. Spadoni winning. He could fill a phony, but he was, he can still be right. So why
04:16did you say that then? Because he, for all we know, the same deals in place now from
04:22our sister station, 93, seven in the fan morning show study. He wasn't, he was sharing with
04:27us his Intel. It wasn't kiss my ass when I'm right. We got to get away from that.
04:34It's okay. Wouldn't you love that? Wouldn't you love to get away from accuracy? You'd
04:40love that. Wouldn't you? Oh boy. You're on thin ice with me. Steve's in Oakland. I'm
04:46good now. Hey Steve, how you doing buddy? Doing fine. How are you two doing? Doing well.
04:54All right. So, um, so let me just start by saying none of us really knows what's been
05:03offered. This is about Brandon Iukes contract and I suppose Trent Williams as well. We just
05:09know what we read in the papers, but you know, it, it appears that his current contract is
05:1614 million a year and that he was at one point offered 26 million a year, which he
05:24turned down because the market got reset. So, you know, for our discussion, I guess
05:32those are the numbers that we have to use. And it occurred to me that let's go with 14
05:39million a year. All right. So if you take 10% of that, which goes to his agent and then
05:46another third, which goes to the IRS and roughly this and that and the other, that leaves you
05:52with about $8 million a year. Okay. And the other thing that we don't know, I know there's
06:00a lot that we don't know, but we don't know how much of that is guaranteed. Right. But
06:05these days, it seems like the NFL is moving much more towards guaranteed money. And then
06:12you take a look at $26 million a year. You take a third to the IRS, 10% to the agent, and
06:21that leaves about $15 million a year. So the one argument that everyone makes whenever
06:31we're talking about the exorbitant amount of money that athletes make is that, oh, yeah,
06:38but they have a short career. They got to make their money now. Whereas, you know,
06:45slobs like you and me or whatever, we got to work 30, 40 years in order to have the same
06:51income. Right. Well, if you take $100,000 a year, which used to be a heck of a lot of
06:59money. Now is, you know, a good sell. You make $100,000 a year and you are 40.
07:09Ah, Steve reminded me of high school. He was losing me before the end. But we get your
07:17point, boy. Uncle Sam is a, you know what, study that was taking me back to Mr. Edgehill
07:22at Logan. Yoko Dokos, Darrell, you're back there like a bump on a pickle.
07:28Can I be honest with you?
07:29Yeah, you were into it.
07:30When's the last time the IRS took a third?
07:32Oh, well, yeah. He was being generous.
07:34I'd love for the IRS to take a third.
07:36I want to live in a state that doesn't have state taxes.
07:39Bye-bye. Quit trying to cheer me up.
07:41Well, that's a five.
07:43Cowboys are hiring.
07:44Boy, wow.
07:45Cowboys need a wide receiver. No state taxes.
07:48Yeah. Boy. You know, he was into it.
07:53He's right.
07:54Well, that's why he's right.
07:55He was right.
07:56He was trying to get some more money, Stiney.
07:58Dude, you're like old fossil. Get back out there.
08:00That's right. I am. I am.
08:02He's getting his bread.
08:04You better hope.
08:05I just hope he's working out for the niners.
08:07Yeah, I'm sure he's busted hump.
08:09LA Fitness.
08:10Yeah.
08:11In Houston.
08:12Do they even have those? He lives in East Texas.
08:14Yeah. That's where my dad knows from. East Bullard, Texas. East Texas.
08:18That'd be hard out there, too.
08:19I don't think it's near Houston.
08:20Yeah, you can watch your dog run away for two miles.
08:22Wow.
08:24I don't know what that means.
08:25Because it's so flat.
08:26Oh, yeah. I got you.
08:29I used to go out there for family reunions and tell my cousins,
08:31hey, take me to the heels.
08:33They're like, dude, you ain't in Cali.
08:35Look around.
08:36It's called the trash heap.
08:37Boy. Flatland.
08:41So Evan posed a question to me the other day.
08:45Next question.
08:46You know, he said, I know, Stiney, you're not a fan of the niners or the Warriors.
08:52And he said something like, so what do you like?
08:55I mean, like, what do you like in sports?
08:57You like golf?
08:58No, no, no. In sports.
08:59Oh, I'm all ears.
09:00Yeah.
09:01And I did something that you might want to try,
09:06and that is reflect on the question before you answer.
09:09And I can really fight you sometimes.
09:14Anyway, I paused for a great five, ten seconds.
09:19And I said, you know what I like?
09:22I like when we find out that what we're thinking and conventional wisdom is wrong.
09:31I like when I learn something that I didn't know or didn't put onto my mental rolodex.
09:40Like, I loved that Daryl and Alameda brought up that point about Purdy.
09:45I hadn't thought about it.
09:48Maybe that's not the reason it's all happening.
09:51Gotcha.
09:52But maybe it's one of the things that might have rankled a couple players.
09:56Maybe. Huh.
09:57So it makes me go, huh.
09:59And that's what I love about sports.
10:02When we actually find out the truth, that's what I like.
10:07Right. No, and that was a great call.
10:09So you can sit there all you want and say, Stiney, they're going to break off Trent.
10:18And you know what?
10:20They probably will.
10:22But I like when they do something that we don't think is going to happen because we don't know.
10:31And it happens every day.
10:32All that's going on.
10:33And it happens every day.
10:34Now I would tell Daryl this, my other brother Daryl, bring it on home, D.
10:39Because when you say what you said about others looking at others and what they're about to get paid
10:46and the boss is saying, Stiney is going to get this and reset the market.
10:50To me, you got to bring that home, D.
10:53And bringing that home would be, now there is jealousy.
10:58There is envy going on.
11:00And it's because that can't be.
11:01That's right.
11:02That's right.
11:03Okay, so you're assuming.
11:04I said it's a gender city right now in Santa Clara.
11:06Oh no, the disease in me, you said it.
11:08Which I won't let go.
11:09I love it.
11:10But we don't have that here at the station.
11:12The reason I don't say the disease of me, and I said this yesterday, is because I only use that phrase for champions.
11:22Only champions can have the disease of me.
11:25But they're as close as you could get.
11:26Yeah, they're a gender city.
11:28Which makes it worse that they're not champions.
11:31That's why you don't bend over and roll over.
11:32Do you think if they won that Super Bowl last year we would be here?
11:34People would be, money would be flying in Santa Clara.
11:37You might be right.
11:38Like Mayweather's little meme where he's throwing the money out.
11:41So Trent Williams, you need to read the room.
11:44Oh, I've read it.
11:45You didn't win the Super Bowl, and you weren't good in that game.
11:49No, he wasn't.
11:50All right.
11:51But wake me up when my press conference or the release is going on.
11:55He's getting his chicken.
11:56Okay.
11:57Now, Iuke, I don't know.
12:00And Jerry said today, I hate that he put it out.
12:07And I went to bed thinking, are we going to have some finality to this?
12:11We're all fatigued.
12:13We are.
12:14I'm not.
12:16I come in every day with a, what's that horse's behind?
12:20Say, oh, attack with an unknown to mankind.
12:25For me, it's back to work and attacking with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.
12:31Oh, Harbaugh.
12:33My coach.
12:34We're just living in it, man.
12:36What if he brings Cap back?
12:38I can't stand him, and yet I love him.
12:41Yes, well, now she's talking about me.
12:44No, I'm talking about Harbaugh.
12:46I love him, but I can't stand him.
12:49He's great, man.
12:50Oh, my God.
12:51Jonathan in Palo Alto.
12:52Our man.
12:53What's up, Jonathan?
12:54How you doing?
12:55Hey, doing good, guys.
12:57What's up?
12:58So I just want to start by saying that Brock, good quarterback.
13:03He's smart, accurate, tough.
13:05We know around the Bay Area how talented he is.
13:09But let's all be honest.
13:11He has a historic offense.
13:13He has one of the best offensive play callers and minds that we've ever seen.
13:18So I'm not entirely bought into the premise that, hey, let's pay Brock $50 million
13:24and build around him again.
13:26Are we 1,000% sure he's that dude that can carry this team regardless of talent?
13:32Because for what he's doing now and what he's getting paid,
13:36the expectations are low.
13:38But once you pay him $50 million, the expectations are going to really change.
13:42And people are going to look at him like he's that dude.
13:45I mean, when Devo and CMC were out last season,
13:48that game against the Vikings Monday night, how did he look?
13:51Not great, right?
13:52So I just wanted to put that out there.
13:54Can I ask you a quick question?
13:55Don't hang up.
13:56Hey, you're on fire.
13:58You're on fire.
13:59But what would the scoreboard read right now
14:01if you talk about what you've seen from Brock?
14:04To me, it's 1,000 to 1 that he's going to get that chicken predicated
14:09on what he's already done if he has an okay year, right?
14:13100%.
14:15But let's take away Brandon Ayoub.
14:19Let's take away Trent Williams.
14:21They're not expendable the way some people I think are talking.
14:25And you take away some of those major pieces of this offense,
14:31how far does he drop down into the quarterback rankings?
14:34That's my only point.
14:36But, Stiney, is that realistic?
14:37Yes.
14:39Absolutely.
14:40People say no shade, no shade.
14:42It's not shade to start to think about the team that Brock Purdy's going to
14:47quarterback in two years.
14:49But the goal is you're always trying to fertilize it.
14:52It's like me telling you with a head full of hay.
14:54I understand.
14:55Tell me how it is to live in the world as a bald man.
14:57If you've got a head full of lettuce, you're never going to know that.
15:01You're not going to have it.
15:02And you wash it and you brush it and you condition it so you don't lose it,
15:04but you'll never really know.
15:06So you're waiting for something that's not going to happen.
15:09What do you mean?
15:10Brock is going to get paid on what he's done,
15:12and it's up to ownership to keep the ship moving in the right way.
15:15You might lose one thing, but the cabinet's not going to be bare.
15:19So you've got to pay the man predicated on what he's done.
15:23First of all, I disagree.
15:24And right now the NFC Championship lost a Super Bowl,
15:27and I'm assuming something good this year.
15:29But this is what you do, Guru.
15:31You know?
15:32This is what you do.
15:33You've got a head full of hay.
15:34Guru, you know what I think is the dumbest conversation we could have?
15:40Something predicated on something that has not happened.
15:45What's he going to look like when his team doesn't have this or that?
15:48Wake me up.
15:49We don't know if that's going to happen.
15:51What's the difference between that and you saying right now
15:56you're going to pay Purdy $45-50 million?
16:00It's like, because we can tap on to what the owner said,
16:05and we're ready for him to reset the market.
16:07And I can tap in to how dire the 49er salary cap situation is going to be
16:13in two or three years if you continue to pay guys
16:16without having any responsibility for accounting.
16:20And you know what?
16:21It doesn't matter what you would pay Brock Purdy now.
16:24I'm telling you what he's done is second to none.
16:27Like, you've got to admit it looks good right now.
16:31But it's like my house.
16:34Okay.
16:35How much is my house worth?
16:36Your house is worth $600,000.
16:38Oh boy, I thought it'd be worth $900,000.
16:40It doesn't matter.
16:41I'm not selling it now.
16:43You're not paying Brock Purdy now.
16:45If he doesn't have a good, I'll tell you right now,
16:48you think, oh, there's impact.
16:53But we can't erase.
16:55Like, he would totally have to fall off to erase the Super Bowl seconds away.
16:59Like, there's a lot of good.
17:02Regardless if we think, oh, he's a product of a system or whatnot,
17:05there's a lot of good Brock has done.
17:07Right.
17:08That's all.
17:09It means, I'll tell you right now,
17:11he's not starting from scratch.
17:13What he's done the first year and a half is half as important as what he does
17:18this year.
17:19Come on, Goo.
17:20Come on.
17:21If he has a great year, he'll get paid.
17:23I can warm up to that.
17:24If he has a bad year, he will not get paid as much.
17:27Yeah.
17:28But I guess, Stoddy, I'm just telling the people,
17:29put respect on what he's done because it's a lot.
17:33Like, he would really, Stoddy, have to be bad, bad,
17:37to negate the two years.
17:40That's all.
17:41The year and a half.
17:42You know what?
17:43Here's one way to keep his price down.
17:45Don't pay Trent Williams or Brandon Aiyuk.
17:47Well, then you're going to get the bad Brock Purdy.
17:49Well, then you don't have to pay him as much.
17:51But you know what?
17:52That's where you're missing the point.
17:55That's where he might not be Mahomes or Herbert or Rogers or one of those guys.
18:01But do you really want to find out that way?
18:03Yes.
18:04That way, though.
18:05I want to find out before I pay him.
18:06Absolutely.
18:07But you're saying right now, with that mindset,
18:09that what he's done means nothing then.
18:11It's not as important as what happens this year.
18:16Okay, so what happened in the last year and a half is more important
18:19than what happens this year?
18:20No.
18:21That's all I'm saying.
18:22But we're talking about two seasons.
18:23Okay.
18:24One on the fly.
18:25First of all, it's a half season.
18:27Okay, but I took it to the NFC Championship game,
18:29and then I followed that up after wrecking my elbow to a Super Bowl.
18:32Okay.
18:33What are you going to do this year?
18:34A divisional loss in the playoffs.
18:36Second round, they lose.
18:37But he wasn't the reason.
18:39Johnny, I've got to believe.
18:40What if he's the reason?
18:42What if he starts to resemble Jimmy Garoppolo?
18:46No.
18:47Hey, I'm here for it.
18:48I'm just telling you and telling that caller this.
18:51He's off to a good start on the first nine of the golf tournament.
18:54But it doesn't matter.
18:55It doesn't matter.
18:56It does.
18:57What's more important is what happens this year.
18:59This year is going to determine what Perdy makes.
19:04I'll never not agree with that.
19:06My whole premise is he's done a lot of good.
19:10So, this is what Trent Williams is doing.
19:12Trent Williams is saying, hey, pay me for what I did two years ago.
19:16Really?
19:18It's two years ago.
