00:50looking for a unique and Filipino-inspired gift, I've got you covered. Meet Pingoy Henaroso of
00:56Espejo de Pingoy. Welcome to Espejo de Pingoy. Unique handmade Filipino wood pieces that
01:05started out as a gift. I remember right 2013 or 14 as a gift. So I made mirrors for my friends
01:16and then after that made several murals again. I think my romance with wood started when I was
01:23young. Every time we go home to the province or every Christmas we go to Malabon,
01:29the old Antillian houses, I get exposed to that. So I see the architectural details.
01:38Using reclaimed wood like nara, ipil, yakal, and kamagong, Pingoy makes extraordinary pieces.
01:45I bring out the texture and the natural color of the wood. We have good wood in the Philippines
01:52and since I'm also an environmental advocate, I use reclaimed wood. I tell them that I can make
02:02a similar piece but not exactly the same. So another version. What would be the hardest part
02:07would you say in making wood and making your craft? So the hardest part is when I start a
02:16particular piece thinking of pleasing other people. In the end, I realize that I have to
02:23please myself first. When I see a piece that is already finished, I think it's beautiful.
02:29That's it. Period. Maybe I'm thinking on the business side. I have to sell.
02:40But now, I have to please myself first and my workers also. My workers also comment.
02:49If you believe in it, the best compliment for an artist is that the buyer understands your work.
03:03So each piece here are inspired by past experiences and history. So each tells a
03:08different story and there's a history behind them. Not only are Pingoy's pieces special and distinct
03:14but their names are one-of-a-kind as well. I research online. For example, what's another
03:20word for Bayanihan? Togetherness. Translate togetherness to Ilongo. From mirrors, tables,
03:28benches, lamps, wall decors, among others, Espejo ni Pingoy's take on reclaimed local woods
03:35make for an amazing and one-of-a-kind gift that I guarantee will make a lasting impression.
03:42And this is the piece I kind of helped Sir Pingoy make earlier. Look how beautiful.
03:48And it's finally finished. So this is my new favorite piece because, you know, I helped make it.
