00:00Um, as we get ready for this weekend, uh, dibs is, uh, he has laid the gauntlet down
00:06on Brandon.
00:07I yuk.
00:08Someone has to show me Brandon be $30 million dude, be that guy.
00:15And I'm sitting here going like, well, yeah, you're not wrong.
00:19And I understand the emotion.
00:21And so I have two responses.
00:23One tried to warn you, Brandon, I told you you weren't going to be forgiven.
00:26Then this was not the way to go about doing it because people are still going to hang
00:30this over your head.
00:31But my other reaction is I get why you're making it about this weekend, but that part's
00:36not Brandon's fault.
00:38So like the 30 million I'd argue is coming up in your mind because Debo is hurt and Christian
00:44is hurt.
00:45And now George might be hurt that.
00:46And that's totally out of Brandon's hands.
00:49I don't want him to play well this weekend because his teammates are hurt.
00:53I want him to play well this weekend because there's a game and I'll feel that way again
00:56next weekend and week 10 when all of these guys are back.
01:00You know, it's also out of his hands, Mark, uh, the ball.
01:05You know me pretty well.
01:06I probably, I probably telegraphed that a little too strong, but I get what you're saying.
01:11And for me, it's not a week three or bust scenario, but I look, it sounds like it a
01:17little bit.
01:18It's not week three or bus.
01:19Okay.
01:20So why did you show me here in week three?
01:22Because you missed camp because you held in and you could have signed the same contract
01:28that you ended up taking a week or two earlier, which would have made you more ready or readier,
01:34which I don't think is a word.
01:35We'll go with more ready.
01:36It would have made you more ready for week three had you actually had camp.
01:41So fine.
01:42Week one, you were not quite ready and you had a couple of drops, including a touchdown
01:47pass that you should have had.
01:48Week two, you still weren't totally ready.
01:52And while this one kind of hurts because you lost to Minnesota and now you're one-on-one
01:55going to LA and you don't have Debo and you don't have Christian and George Kittle today
02:00couldn't practice with a hamstring.
02:02So George Kittle, as we sit now three days away from game time, he probably will be officially
02:09listed as questionable.
02:11So you might be the only legit, highly paid skill guy able to play on Sunday.
02:17So yeah, all eyes on you, Brandon Iuke.
02:21How well do you know me as a co-host of everything you just said?
02:23What do you think I'm going to respond to?
02:25Whether or not readier is a word.
02:26Good job, dude.
02:27And I don't think it's a word.
02:28No, I think it is.
02:29It is.
02:30How about readiest?
02:31No.
02:32Oxford English Dictionary, readier.
02:33In fact, the first known use of the word readier was in back in the 1920s and specifically
02:43in 1922 in the Daily Mail.
02:46That's the first time readier was used.
02:48Yeah, I still will default to more ready.
02:51Readier seems to me...
02:53I couldn't be any more ready.
02:55I couldn't be readier.
02:57Yeah.
02:58More ready feels better to me.
03:01The greater point is that you had your two preseason games, which unfortunately were
03:07regular season games.
03:08Oh, you're not wrong.
03:09Sure.
03:10And you weren't great.
03:11No, dude.
03:12Like, yes, yes.
03:13Perform well.
03:14Perform well.
03:15I'm happy and happy as a damn clam.
03:17And I don't even know that clams are that happy, but like happy as a clam.
03:21Niners went 27-17.
03:23Brandon has three catches for 42 yards and no scores.
03:27Fine.
03:28Fine.
03:29Did the offense perform well?
03:30Did you move the ball?
03:31Good.
03:32He doesn't need to be the dog.
03:35He just needs to play his position.
03:37I don't know how the Rams are going to defend this.
03:39If that leads to other people being open.
03:42Sweet.
03:43Sweet.
03:44It's bigger than that.
03:45If you win the game nine to eight and he has four drops, he has two catches for nine.
03:51That's a different conversation.
03:52What are we talking about here?
03:53We're talking about Brandon.
03:54I understand, but that doesn't need to be this weekend.
03:56Like I would come after Brandon any week that he did that.
04:00Right.
04:01But this is the first week that I'm looking at him squarely and saying, all right, 30
04:05mil, now's your time because we need you now more than we needed you in weeks one or week
04:10two.
04:11I would kind of argue it's already been time to come down the road.
04:17And I didn't want to get into this for multiple reasons.
04:20A, we exhausted ourselves in the entire world with the name Brandon Iyuk.
04:24For five months.
04:25Yeah.
04:26At least for two.
04:27Yep.
04:28We exhausted everybody with it.
04:29Secondarily, the 49ers had a phenomenal night last Monday and Brandon did not play well.
04:36I don't care what your metric is.
04:38He did not play well.
04:40And we talked about it, but in the aftermath, right.
04:42But the Niners had a wonderful night and it was, so there was no reason to like harp on
04:48that fact.
04:50And then come the next game where Brandon was maybe a touch bit better, but the larger
04:57issue was the 49ers were not.
05:00And quite frankly, not really in any position group.
05:03Couple individuals were fine, but no position group like nailed it in the game in Minnesota.
05:09So Brandon was not the focus.
05:11But I would argue that if you really do want to make things about Brandon, he has already
05:17had an horrific start to the season.
05:23Horrific.
05:25And quite frankly, I'm not really sure why it hasn't bothered people more.
05:31This guy held the hell out, got no extra dollars for it, came to camp, smiled at the media
05:39and went, yeah, I was kind of pain in the butt toward the end.
05:43Then walked out on the field, dropped the ball in the end zone.
05:46That was the dime of the year from brand from Brock Purdy has six catches in two weeks and
05:52the Niners are frustratingly one-on-one and we're like, okay, now play.
05:56No dude.
05:57Where you been?
05:58No.
05:59Now play.
06:00No, you should have been playing fine.
06:02But if you want to look at the first two games and you want to talk about the biggest issues
06:07with the team, Brandon, Iuke is probably fourth or fifth on the list of issues with
06:15the 49ers.
06:16I would say, I guess I would look at an offensive line, the right side that has been porous.
06:22I would look at a defensive secondary that's been confused at times.
06:29And then if you want to get down to Brandon, Iuke and his ineffectiveness, yeah, we could
06:33talk about that.
06:34I don't disagree with that.
06:35But I'm looking at it more through the lens of, I'm not like, okay, what level of an issue
06:40is he with the 49ers?
06:42I'm just telling you the same thing I told you last month, I was turned off by it then
06:45I'm turned off by it now.
06:47You left your teammates high and dry.
06:49You took everybody on a goose chase.
06:51It got nowhere.
06:53You got your money.
06:54Then you laughed about it.
06:56And here we are not performing like that's not good.
07:00I'm okay.
07:01I'm not good.
07:02Like it's okay.
07:04This is recoverable.
07:05And again, for me, this is about the next five years, but there's no way to look at
07:10what Brandon has done to this point.
07:12It's not excusable.
07:14Like it's, it's recoverable.
07:15Of course.
07:16This is always going to be something that happened and I will always and forever, no
07:20matter where this goes from here, I will always look at the way he handled this off season
07:25as very poor.
07:27I agree with all of that, but I'm not looking at five years.
07:30I'm looking at week three.
07:32And this is where for me, you want to talk about recoverable.
07:36The recovery has to start this week because you don't have Debo.
07:40You may not have George.
07:41I'd say George right now is probably 50, 50 to play.
07:45Feels like a best.
07:46Well, he sat out today with a hamstring and because it's a hamstring, that's sort of like,
07:50right?
07:51Like why would you push this suddenly three days from now agreed, but you might push it
07:56because you don't have a lot of other skill position guys.
07:59But then again, you might not push it because you feel like the Rams are depleted too.
08:03And you feel like maybe, you know, if you rest George, he could be ready for the Patriots
08:08game or, you know, a bigger game down the road.
08:10You've got Seattle and Arizona coming up and the rest of it.
08:13But I look at this game and Brandon, I, you, and I think, okay, you want this to be recoverable.
08:20Then go out and have eight catches for a buck 22 and a touchdown in a victory.
08:25That's how you start the recovery.
08:27It would certainly help.
08:28You don't start the recovery with a two catch game against the jets, including two drops
08:33and then a four catch whole home game against Minnesota, where let's be fair.
08:38He was not very impactful in that game.
08:40He had a catch in the, I think the first play from scrimmage was a throw to Iuke.
08:45And then it was the first or second play from scrimmage.
08:47He had a catch.
08:48Okay.
08:49And then he had three other catches and you'd be hard pressed to remember those catches.
08:53You're talking about the Minnesota game.
08:55Correct.
08:56I thought you were talking about the jets game.
08:57In the Minnesota game, he either had the first catch or the second catch.
09:00I think you're right.
09:01I know they threw it three times and then punted.
09:02Yeah, it was a two yard catch.
09:04I think the second play from scrimmage, he had one more target later on.
09:08And then his second catch came like halfway through the third quarter.
09:11Oof.
09:12Very unimpactful.
09:13Yeah.
09:14Yeah.
09:15But, but, and I know you're not saying otherwise, like the Niners win and Brandon doesn't pop
09:22statistically is way better to me than the Niners lose and Brandon goes for a buck 20.
09:27Agreed.
09:28Yeah.
09:29And I know, I know you agree with that, but Dollar Bill in the city next up here on Withered
09:33in Dibs again, Jake Gruden is going to join us in 15 minutes.
09:35Hi Dollar Bill.
09:36What's up?
09:37Hey boys.
09:38Hey, you know, one of the things I love about listening to you guys is, you know, you guys
09:43can argue and it's the opposite of when I argue with my wife, where the only two outcomes
09:48are, you know, she's right or I'm wrong.
09:51And I listen to you guys, you guys can both be right at the same time where, yeah, I,
09:58as a fan, you want to, who cares you win, it's the greatest antiseptic.
10:04But when you get a, you know, as both of you guys just said, if you get the big bag and
10:12the way you went about it was kind of a little diva-ish and then, you know, the first couple
10:19weeks of the year, you're not really performing well, then the pressures are going to build
10:24and build and build in every week that he does not perform.
10:30The echoes are going to get louder and louder and louder.
10:34And this is the week where you want to be a baller, you got to ball out because you're
10:39it.
10:40Dollar Bill, thanks so much.
10:44And like in the end, and everybody knows this, this isn't going to be some super smart comment
10:50or whatever, but like, it's just like what we saw with the Jets.
10:53The guy dropped a touchdown pass in his first game after taking everybody on an absolute
10:57annoying ride.
10:59And nobody cared because the Niners won.
11:01Exactly.
11:02That was like a three on a scale of one to 10 in terms of outrage because they were dominant,
11:08they won.
11:09And it was just kind of like, Ooh, that was a thing.
11:11And we talked about on Tuesday, like, what were the negatives of the game?
11:15And you had to really think long and hard about the negatives.
11:17It's like, Ooh, yeah.
11:18Brandon Naik with two drops, including a dime in the end zone.
11:22That sucked.
11:23But anyway, nice win.
11:26That was it.
11:27This is all going to get baked into whether or not the 49ers win.
11:31And he can take his damn sweet time as long as the Niners are winning.
11:35He really can.
11:36It just won't bother people that much.
11:39If that much.
11:40Yeah.
11:41Like, because that's what this is about.
11:42And I like the second he signs, I'm making the effort at least not to do the 30 million
11:50dollar thing.
11:51I mean, because you said at the time, look, you're out on Brandon, I you this was prior
11:55to the signing.
11:56Correct.
11:57Yeah.
11:58And you also said at the time when he signs and he's a Niner, you're going to cheer for
12:01him all the same because you're a 49er fan.
12:03And I'm going to move on.
12:04And I have.
12:05And although I'm explaining to you right now, I think pretty clear, like, I still think
12:10that that was really poorly done.
12:13He's here.
12:14Great.
12:15I hope he performs really well.
12:16It's off to the start that it's off to.
12:19But whatever.
12:20Like, and that's the way I'm going to move forward.
12:22He's here now for a pretty long time.
12:25And I want the 49ers to win football games while he's here.
12:29I am not going to lose sleep over whether or not he gets thirteen hundred yards or eleven
12:34hundred yards or even if, oh dear, there's a nine hundred yard season.
12:38I just don't.
12:40When the Niners score, I don't care who got in.
12:42I just don't care.
12:45But if the Niners are struggling and this is where, again, I really do get where you're
12:50coming from.
12:51You want it to be Brandon this week because it looks like it should be.
12:56But I will I will be totally fine if Brandon goes out there, draws a lot of eyeballs and
13:02Juwan Jennings goes off and his numbers stink and the Niners win by 10.
13:08Sweet.
13:09That's cool.
13:10Everything is different based on the result and how it looks.
13:14And you can have a team, you can go out there and beat the Rams five to three.
13:18And the offense is terrible across the board.
13:21And you win five to three.
13:23And Iuke has one catch for nine yards and two fumbles.
13:27We're going to think differently, even though the Niners win, we're going to still come
13:30back on Monday and we're going to look at things differently.
13:34Or they lose to the Rams 28-24 and Iuke has 13 catches for a buck 70.
13:40They lose.
13:41And that's going to suck.
13:42But we'll look at Brandon Iuke and we'll go, you know what, B.A. balled out.
13:45They needed him to.
13:47And he's going to get his flower.
13:48So it's not as clear cut to me as win or lose will color our opinions.
13:54Any football game win or lose is going to lead to potentially new concerns.
13:59The Jets game didn't because they look dominant in many, many phases.
14:03If they lose the game 28-24, I got all kinds of concerns about the defensive side of the
14:09football with a new regime.
14:11Could be special teams.
14:12You never know how it, you know, I got and if they win five to three, I got all kinds
14:16of concerns about what's going to happen next.
14:20So all of that is fair.
14:22I just, yeah, like I'm not, I'm just not pinning it on Brandon to go be some like sparkly
14:30numbers fantasy performer this weekend.
14:32I'm not either.
14:33It's not about, you know, sparkly fantasy numbers, but be the dog, be the dog, go out
14:39there and be the dog, get open, catch the ball and earn your money, $30 million a year.
14:46And I know that doesn't kick in till next year.
14:48And ultimately it's a team game.
14:49I get that.
14:50And if they win, all opinions will be colored based on the result from the team in general.
14:57But for me, this is a game where you don't have Debo or McCaffrey and George Kittle,
15:04even if he plays will most likely be somewhat hampered.
15:07This is a game where offensively I would look to Brandon Iuke as a guy who I should be able
15:13to rely on for a big game to help us win the football game.
