00:00Want to get this take off that call and I apologize. I'm gonna forget his name, but the one who was talking about
00:07You know the the standard to which we hold Brock Purdy and all quarterbacks for that matter
00:12It was a very good call. It's a very good call on the radio
00:18There's one, but there's one, but sir makes a lot sized
00:23There's a big butt here. Yeah, I think think think think think think think think think think think think think think think I am
00:30but I
00:31Like them round and big
00:34Anyway, sorry
00:38That was all funny, okay
00:42Here's the thing I'm starting to get real hesitant about is when people use the phrase same energy
00:51That was directed at you
00:52I know I know it was and I don't care about that
00:56But I now have a retort and a response for anybody who wants to use
01:01You gotta keep the same energy because by the way that got directed at you last week wait a minute
01:07No, it did last week when you were critical of Lamar Jackson. Oh, that's right after the game against the Chiefs
01:13I heard a lot of dudes you better keep that same energy if you use the phrase same energy
01:19You're on social media too much
01:21That's my opinion
01:24Because these situations are not the same and no
01:28Like literally think about what you're asking people to do
01:32You're asking people to have the same opinion about two different things
01:38You're literally asking for context to go into a vast wasteland
01:44So you're telling me whenever there's a loss. We just have to keep the same energy on the quarterback. That's what you're saying
01:52Isn't that lazy I feel like that's lazy
01:57Brock Purdy didn't play well yesterday. That's not hard to say
02:01He wasn't awful. I
02:03Also reject this idea at least personally that when other teams lose we just automatically hold the quarterback responsible
02:11He brought up Doc and Jordan love. I don't even know have I ever said anything bad about Jordan love ever
02:16I don't remember that Jordan love is very good. He's now hurt. That's too bad
02:21He was very good here in the playoffs last year until he was put in a situation
02:27Where he had to do a fire drill and he threw a pick to Dre Greenlaw
02:30He threw a couple of picks in that game. Actually, that doesn't make him a bad player
02:36Lamar Jackson, what are we talking about? He's one of the best players in the league. He's phenomenal and
02:42I and I I flatly reject this idea of going week to week. It's the same thing
02:47We've done to LeBron James is that where every play his legacy is on the line?
02:51You miss a shot in the fourth court or you bum or when he passes the ball even greater than that
02:57LeBron you're scared
02:59Don't fall prey to this
03:02That is your social media side talking
03:05You can have a better take than that
03:08There are so many things that happen in this football game and I'd argue the Vikings
03:13Outplayed the Niners yesterday and just about all of them
03:16Their quarterback was better their lines were better. Their coach was better. Their special teams was better
03:23There were all of the things were better
03:25So no, I will not apologize for not making this all about Brock. And if you are I
03:33What are you doing? That's not what happened yesterday
03:37Well, if you want to rank what happened and I want to get to more of the phone calls triple eight nine five seven ninety
03:42Five seventy is the phone number. Why did they lose yesterday if you want to power rank why they lost yesterday for me Brock?
03:50Purdy's play is probably
03:53Fifth or sixth at best as to why they lost in my opinion
03:58I would look at other things before that including an offensive line that didn't give him a lot of time
04:03I would look at a
04:06Defensive secondary that made mistakes. I'd look at a special teams group
04:10That was awful and I would give them an F and I don't know what Grandy gave him on
04:14Grandy's grades which comes up tomorrow, but wait, I already can't I hope it's an F because for me
04:19It's an F blocked punt muff punt
04:23Kickoff return that never should have happened where you had a flag and you started at the 10-yard line
04:28So if I want to rank the reasons why they lost I probably would get to
04:32Nick Sorensen before I get to Brock Purdy. Yeah, I mean Brock
04:36I I don't know to me
04:37It's pretty easy like it would not it was not a game to write home about for Brock Purdy
04:41It was not that's not hard to say
04:43But again my suggestion today at least the way I'd love to do this
04:48I don't know why every time 60 minutes of football happened
04:51We have to make a grandiose statement about all of the people
04:55so now Kyle Shanahan's a dummy head and Brock Purdy is not worth any money and
05:01And then we stop because we're like, that's it the coach in the quarterback. That's it. There's a lot more going on here
05:07So can't we just say not a great game for Brock not an absolute Craterville either
05:13like there you go, I
05:16And and I'm with you like not the lead story of the game yesterday in my opinion if I was to grade
05:23Just Brock Purdy
05:25Probably a c-plus
05:27I'm with you. Yeah, it wasn't I don't think that it was
05:31Terrible, he did throw a terrible interception inside his own 20
05:36And the fumble is the kind of play that you cannot make at this level
05:41Where you just have the ball squirt out of your hand
05:44He missed a couple of open receivers
05:46And other than that if you want to be honest with your assessment of Brock Purdy in the opening quarter or so
05:53He made three or four big big time throws time throws including
05:58Grandi mentioned it before the fourth down throw to Jennings, which was an absolute thread on fourth down from midfield
06:04Like if you want to make a grandiose statement about a quarterback so far in the NFL my grandiose. I'll give you one
06:10Yeah, great. We should use that. Yeah, Grandi. Oh
06:14Grandiose statements, but I love it. You do that on your football hour. It's funny because he's very measured
06:20He doesn't do grandiose, you know, well, it might be a nice. Let's go. Come on gussy it up a little bit
06:26Here's a grandiose statement for you, okay, Anthony Richardson looks awful. There's your grandiose statement
06:32I had that last year if you really want to get into quarterbacking, you know, like yeah
06:37There's some guys who look really good who you wouldn't have thought so Derek Carr Baker Mayfield look really really good and then
06:45Who who surprisingly looks off like Anthony Richardson looks like terrible?
06:51Deshaun Watson looks awful Wow, you know, I mean
06:55Justin Herbert looks like a Jim Harbaugh product now. We're like other things are happening
07:01You're not gonna ask that much of him anymore
07:03It's almost been the case with my homes too who hasn't really looked special so far
07:08But we know already all about him like if you want a small sample size it
07:12Garner Minshew greater than Lamar Jackson. Oh, well, it was in the fourth quarter. Yes
07:17Thank you. Kyla Murray has been phenomenal this year unstoppable. You know what I mean?
07:22But like yeah, I I just think there's a lot more going on
07:25So keep that same energy is like, I don't know y'all really running around with these scoreboards on people like that
07:33Like back in April use it like come on, man
07:36We're watching these games react to them in real time put your scoreboard away like stop the gotcha stuff
07:42It I don't know man. Just chill on that Paul in Oakland. Hey, man, what's going on Paul? You're on with Willard and Debs
07:50Hey guys great conversation, so three three perspectives about the
07:55Outcome yesterday first one real quick to me. The real palpable sequence was the 49ers not getting in and
08:04Then two plays later the Vikings hit the home run
08:07So that's minus six for the 49ers plus six for the Vikings. That's a 12 play swing
08:14That's number one number two if the 49ers have elected to take the three
08:20Instead of attempting the fourth down throw add three to their score now the Vikings home run
08:28probably not going to happen because the the
08:32Contingency is not going to be there with them backed up and then taking a shot
08:36So if you take six off the Vikings score and add three to the 49ers
08:421917 if you want to look at it that way third and last thing
08:45To me is take a look at the totality of the game 60 minutes of those 60 minutes
08:52How many of those minutes were the 49ers in chase mode ie were they behind in the game?
08:59Minnesota against that team in Minnesota against that team in that venue
09:05I'm most of them right Paul most of them. Yeah
09:09Yeah, so Dibs as a coach can probably relate to the emotion and energy and stress
09:18That is involved in coming from behind on
09:22the road in
09:23Somebody else's building against the team that you've had difficulty with that's that's high cost
09:31That's high energy
09:32That's high investment and the longer the game goes and the more you're in that chase mode
09:39The more difficult it is to flip the outcome and and get what you want, which is the win
09:45I mean, that's I mean, that's just that's just a reality
09:50Well Paul, thank you very much
09:52What Paul is is trying to do and and we as radio hosts can can help you with this Paul
09:57You're trying to go deep into the context which really really matters
10:02It's hard for a lot of people and I get it
10:04I'm actually not like I'm not asking for that or or demanding that I get it
10:09You want to sit on your couch?
10:10You want to eat some unhealthy food?
10:12You want to scream and and you want the Niners to look good and when they don't it's like well
10:17that was a stupid play call and
10:19And the quarterback is not amazing and then you go on about your day and that's fair
10:24I know that there's nothing like unfair about that. But but that's not really what's going on
10:30That like there's so many more things
10:33Going on and then as far as the like this to play sequence if it goes that way
10:39Yeah, like the context of this game is it is different. You're on the road
10:43That's a hard place to play for all we know. The Vikings are actually a pretty good football team. You were behind and
10:51Quarterbacks, this is good. This will be big now all quarterbacks turn the ball over more when you're behind
10:59That's just a fact that's a fact of the league because you take more chances because you're behind
11:06So, you know go back to last year against Minnesota. I remember we talked about this last week. Yep. Brock had some turnovers
11:13Yeah, because they were in freaking go mode
11:15Like they were like you knew they were gonna pass and they and they had to force some things to try to get back in
11:22The game that's gonna cause more turnovers
11:24So that was part of yesterday too yesterday the big thing though to the caller's point is, you know
11:30You're behind and you go in to the locker room. You're down 13-7 you come out you force a three and out
11:35Then you punt it back then they punt it back to you at the defense was doing its job early on
11:40You get the ball inside your own 20 and that's where the Brock pick really hurt you and that to me was
11:46One of the biggest plays of the game where he sees use check and he sees him and he thinks about it
11:52and he throws it late and that pick is really what swung the game because even though the first half didn't go well and
11:59Jefferson hit the home run and you failed on fourth and two and all the rest of it
12:02You were only down six and the defense had forced two
12:06punts early in that third quarter
12:08So that interception which led to the first play touchdown now you're down
12:1320-7 and now you're in a spot where you have to kind of abandon the run bad pick bad pick bad time bad time bad
12:21Had gotten you a little bit of momentum back by holding them twice and then you know
12:27You get the ball back and you're hoping for one of those classic Shanahan drives 14 plays 80 yards
12:33Nine minutes off the clock and you would be up 14 13 instead Brock Purdy on the second throw
12:39Throws that ghastly pick and then they go one play touchdown
