00:00Well, I'm having a hard time not responding to the most recent content on the Comcast
00:06business text line.
00:08What is the content?
00:09Do I?
00:10Listen, to our listeners and to you as well, do I need to apologize for how I view Brock
00:19Purdy?
00:20Do I need to apologize for it?
00:21Only if you're being disingenuous.
00:23Okay.
00:24Only if you're being, I mean, if you're just doing it because there is, like, is Jed York
00:31paying your salary?
00:32No, like, I guess, I guess that's...
00:33Do you get paid by the sentence every time you praise Brock Purdy?
00:37Well, I do.
00:38I do stay in Kyle Shanahan's guest room.
00:40And that's a great question.
00:42And I'm wearing a Shana hat.
00:44I'm wearing my Shana hat.
00:46Yeah.
00:47You probably got that for free.
00:48No, I didn't.
00:49I paid for this sucker.
00:50Well, then you don't have to apologize for your takes.
00:52Okay.
00:53415, great call for Willard saying Purdy is Joe Montana.
00:59Did I do that?
01:00I must have missed that.
01:01Do I do that?
01:02Am I, am I that far off?
01:07Like I get it.
01:08You, you get to see Purdy how you do.
01:10I get to see, and I don't think he's Joe Montana.
01:12I don't even know why we do the Brady, the Montana, blah, blah, blah.
01:16I went on Seattle radio and said, Brock Purdy is Tom Brady.
01:20You did?
01:21After 25 games.
01:22Well, that's true.
01:23And we did that here.
01:24That's actually true.
01:25And I did that on Seattle radio, except for the Superbowl, except for the ring.
01:28He's actually better than Tom Brady through 25.
01:30And actually did, um, I'm trying to remember what was the arc of it?
01:35Now, Brady, it was less than 25 games, but, but he also, he wasn't a rookie when he got
01:40thrown in.
01:41He was a C or two guy, right?
01:43Yeah.
01:44Okay.
01:45Anyway.
01:46Do you know what I mean?
01:47Like, I, I don't have any problems saying, I think he's really good, like really, really
01:51good.
01:53My guru did a great thing today and it was especially great because they did it quickly
01:57and we've all done it.
01:58And it's so played out.
02:00Like the whole thing of what other quarterback would you take instead of Brock Purdy?
02:05And they went through the other 31 teams.
02:07I don't think it's that played out, but they did it quickly.
02:09Okay.
02:10And I think they wound up where Brock Purdy was in the top 10 for sure.
02:14And he might've been in the top eight and he might've been in the top seven.
02:17He's like for sure.
02:18They went so fast and it was hard for me to keep track.
02:20But like quarterbacks you would take instead of Brock Purdy, I don't think that you can
02:25get more than six or seven that are definitive and even at that.
02:30So what are we talking about?
02:32I don't know.
02:33I don't know.
02:34Is he Joe Montana?
02:35No.
02:36No.
02:37Joe Montana is Joe Montana.
02:38Right.
02:39Right.
02:40And Brock is Brock.
02:41But I like the one that I think is played out is the one where a lot of you seem to
02:43think a quarterback isn't good until we've seen him play on a different team.
02:48It's like, no, you have to do it somewhere else.
02:50Joe Montana wasn't good until he went to the chiefs.
02:53I mean, Tom Brady wasn't good until he went to the, this is going to sound stupid, but
02:57I've never heard anyone be like, well, we haven't.
03:00What would my homes look like on the giants?
03:03What would he look like?
03:04Well, objectively now you don't know.
03:07And I know you think, you know, but subjectively not as good as he looks on Kansas city.
03:12Like you don't, I've watched a hall of fame quarterback look great and go to the giants
03:17and look like crap and then go to a different team and look great again.
03:21His name is Kurt Warner.
03:24His name is Kurt Warner and he's got a gold jacket.
03:28So yes, going to another team might make you look bad.
03:32Like Sam Donald right now is going to get MVP votes if it, if it happened today.
03:36But he looked like crap as a jet and a Panther.
03:39I'll let you figure out why.
03:41Was it Sam?
03:43Maybe partially, but was some of it, the jets and the Panthers raise your hand.
03:48If you think, yes, my hands up, my hands up, you know, like I just, I don't, I don't need
03:55to see him anywhere else.
03:57I don't need to see any of those guys anywhere else.
04:00Josh Allen and Lamar and Burrow, none of them have played on other teams and we fully accept
04:05that they are very, very good, if not great quarterbacks and, and I've seen enough.
04:11So you don't need to share the opinion or anything like that.
04:14I'm not going to go to war with anybody.
04:16I don't think I sound that far off, especially when you listen to people who actually played
04:23the game.
04:24You know what I mean?
04:25Like the line of quarterbacks who think he's phenomenal is very long.
04:31It's getting longer.
04:32Very, very long list.
04:33And the line of people who think that he's a system QB or the product of Shanahan or
04:39a product of that, that he has around him, that line is getting shorter as well because
04:44the more he does it, and again, 18 to 28, you can look at it however you want.
04:49I look at last night's game as not a masterclass, but that's the kind of game from a quarterback
04:56that I look at and go, that was a great performance.
04:59The plays that were there, he made them the plays that weren't there.
05:04He didn't make them worse.
05:05He threw three touchdowns and his team put up 36 points.
05:09Like he had four scrambles that were very scrambly.
05:13They were scrambles that needed to be made.
05:16There were plays that broke down and he got rid of the ball and didn't endanger his team's
05:21chances.
05:22He had zero turnovers and they won handily.
05:25If their special teams wasn't a disaster, they win that game by 20.
05:29Here's the way I look at it, and I think that this is relatable to any NFL city or whoever
05:34you root for, because not everybody who listens to us are 49er fans and not everybody's here
05:38in the Bay Area.
05:39I think this is relatable if you're a football fan, no matter who your team is.
05:43The emotion you're looking for when you turn on the game and just think about your team
05:48season is, are you excited that that player is your quarterback?
05:54Most NFL cities, the answer's no.
05:58Most NFL cities.
05:59Some NFL cities are in a spot where they're like, definitely not.
06:04Like Cleveland, you excited?
06:07Definitely not.
06:08Not excited.
06:09Okay.
06:10Then there's the ones who are sort of like just throwing out hope against hope.
06:14Washington, Chicago.
06:15Are you excited?
06:16Atlanta, Minnesota.
06:17Right.
06:18Like, yes.
06:19Well, those are different too.
06:20But the younger, like the guys who have just been drafted.
06:23Right.
06:24Okay.
06:25Are you excited?
06:26Washington?
06:27Yes.
06:28Chicago?
06:29We think so.
06:30Houston, you're thrilled.
06:31Boston?
06:32No clue.
06:33About to find out.
06:34New England, yeah.
06:35Houston, but like that's a year in.
06:36You're right.
06:37And then there's the ones where you're just like, yeah.
06:40Like I can't wait to sit down and watch him play today.
06:43And that's how I feel.
06:45That's how I feel.
06:46I'm not saying I wouldn't trade him for Mahomes, but I don't even know what world that, who
06:50cares?
06:51Who cares?
06:53He's here.
06:54He's yours.
06:55And like, I love watching him play.
06:57He does, he does stuff every week that where you're like, oh, you know, like I think he's
07:02an exciting player to watch.
07:04Very exciting.
07:05I think that the question for me comes down to a very simple one.
07:08And this is goes for all 32 teams.
07:11And it is, do you have a quarterback?
07:14And do you have a quarterback means, do you have a quarterback that you are excited about
07:19now and believe in, in the future?
07:21Like Green Bay is a good example.
07:23If you asked him a year ago, do you have a quarterback?
07:25Heck, I don't know.
07:27We're not sure.
07:28But now you're pretty sure.
07:29And Houston, you're sure.
07:31And we know all the big ones like Cincinnati and Buffalo and Kansas city and all the rest
07:35of it.
07:36But like, if you asked a Seattle fan, do you have your quarterback?
07:39No, exactly.
07:40No.
07:41And then pretty good.
07:42He's pretty good.
07:43He's not the dude.
07:44He's not going to take you to a Superbowl.
07:46Denver.
07:47You don't know about bonehead.
07:48Yeah.
07:49That's early.
07:50And so we'll see Jacksonville.
07:52I'm not sure what's going on there on Monday.
07:55Right.
07:57we've decided are good yet.
07:59Their fan base is not necessarily in, Hey, Philadelphia, I'm talking to you.
08:05How about the chargers with Justin Herbert?
08:07If they had fans, we could ask him fair, but the jury's out, you know, on Justin Herbert.
08:13I mean, like, I think the league really likes him.
08:16The league really likes him.
08:18But Hey, Pittsburgh, do you have a guy, ah, maybe, maybe, right.
08:26We're three and two.
08:27So that's fun.
08:28You know what I mean?
08:29So like, that's the way I look at it.
08:31I would argue that forget talent.
08:35I would argue that the 49er fan base is one of the seven or eight most confident and lucky
08:42fan bases in terms of the quarterback.
08:45They have that.
08:47That's how I would say it, you know, any other word you want to use, you know, pick your
08:51word.
08:52As a fan, that's where you should start.
08:55Because if you're a 49er fan, do you have your quarterback?
08:59I think that for me as a Niner fan, the answer is yes, because he is good.
09:05He's really good.
09:06And you win when he plays quarterback.
09:08So I don't know what more you want.
09:11Do you want a guy who can off his back foot, throw it 75 yards.
09:15And if you watch last night's game, he made a couple of homesy and throws where he dropped
09:20down sidearm and he flipped a couple out.
09:23He makes more plays than people want to give him credit for.
09:25I mean, that's why nine days from day is real interesting because it's only a regular season
09:31game, but it feels like this matchup that may have chapters to it, not Brady and Manning,
09:39because that was just annual.
09:42And these two are in a different conference.
09:43And quite frankly, they've only gone head to head in the Super Bowl, right?
09:48Like I don't think, didn't the loss to the Chiefs before, that was still Jimmy, wasn't
09:56it?
09:57I think so.
09:58The one from two seasons ago?
09:59I defer to Grandy on these memory things.
10:00Correct.
10:01Yeah, that was still Jimmy.
10:02That was McCaffrey's first game as a Niner, but he didn't start that game.
10:04So Brock has only played Patrick one time and they went to overtime and Brock lost.
10:08So this is try two.
10:10And this will be a thing for some people, even though it's not the most important game
10:16of their lives, but like, hey, Purdy, go beat Patrick.
10:20And if he can do it in nine days, that's going to be a thing for some people.
10:23All right, we're going to keep going on the phones here and then we'll get to the replay
10:28thing and the kickoff thing.
10:29We really want to talk it out.

10:46Hi Matt and Sam Ruffell, thanks for calling.
10:49What's good?
10:50Hey Mark, happy Friday to you guys.
10:54Before I get to my point, it was interesting, I was listening to what you guys were just
10:57talking about and you guys mentioned Love and how the Packers are now happy, they weren't
11:03last year.
11:04Love has a much smaller sample size than Purdy does, yet everyone, because of his pedigree,
11:10is ready to make him the next anointed one for that franchise.
11:13And he might be, we just don't know.
11:16And then you look at Smith last night and everyone was talking about how Geno found
11:19his groove and he's got a pretty big contract and he made the mistakes that Purdy didn't.
11:24They lost the game in large part because of Geno Smith last night.
11:28The 49ers won, I believe, almost exclusively because of Brock Purdy.
11:34The two things I wanted to say are one, I find it really kind of strange why people
11:39continue to want to dump on Purdy and not support him and not believe in him.
11:45And I don't know if it's that there's this, you know, he's a low traffic and they don't
11:50want potentially bad players to get to the pub.
11:53I don't know if it's the Niners.
11:55I don't know if it's just the way society's gone.
11:57I don't know if it's the old guard of the Niner fans saying, no, no, nothing will be
12:01like that.
12:02I don't know, but I find it weird.
12:04But the thing I will say is, if you take all of the emotion out of it and you just look
12:08at the way he has played, the wins, you look at his numbers, you cannot deny what he has
12:14done for this team.
12:15And I just don't get why people refuse to acknowledge that.
12:18Well, Matt, it's a great call and maybe we can put a different spin on it because obviously
12:22we developed draftism, but let's spin that in a different direction.
12:28I went on a hike with the lovely Christy today and I thought she kind of captured this really
12:31well.
12:32Do you want to know what I think a lot of this is for Brock?
12:35He just doesn't look the part.
12:37That's it.
12:38He doesn't look the part.
12:40And so we want our quarterback to look different.
12:43We want him to be bigger.
12:44We want him to have a more masculine look on his face.
12:48We want him to, you want his leadership qualities to be such that when he speaks, there's got
12:55this like this gravity to it.
12:58You know what I mean?
12:59Like Patrick.
13:00Well, Patrick sounds like he sounds like Kermit the Frog, but he does.
13:07Obviously he's got a presence about him.
13:09And part of that is just the rings.
13:11You know what I mean?
13:12You notice that Patrick Mahomes, if you want to play stats, Patrick looks like crap this
13:16year.
13:17Now his team's five and O. His interception to touchdown ratio is one to one.
13:22One to one.
13:23One to one.
13:25Okay.
13:26Six touchdowns.
13:27Six picks.
13:28Yep.
13:29That ain't good.
13:30No.
13:31McCullough brings up Jordan Love.
13:32He's 18th in quarterback rating.
13:33You want to have some fun with Jordan Love?
13:34Okay.
13:35Now smaller sample because he got hurt.
13:36Jordan Love has played three games this year.
13:38He has thrown five picks already.
13:41His quarterback rating is 85.9, 23rd in the league, tucked right behind Daniel Jones.
13:48Jordan Love and Patrick Mahomes are third and fourth in interception rate this year.
13:53But nobody was going to stop and question anything.
13:56Why?
13:576-4.
13:586-4.
13:59Rocket arm.
14:00You look the part.
14:02I really think that's a big part of Brock Purdy.
14:04And if you don't look the part, you sort of need to look a different part.
14:08And that's where I'm going to put Lamar Jackson and Jaden Daniels because I don't think either
14:11one of them are 200 pounds.
14:14And so you don't sort of look that part.
14:16You don't look the Jordan Love, Tom Brady, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow part.
14:22You kind of now look what I would argue is a new category.
14:26And it is the category that's been built by Lamar.
14:28He's not the first mobile quarterback, but he's the first, I would argue, to really have
14:34that devastating of moves and speed and presence on the field at a different size and perennial
14:42playoff performer.
14:44That kind of thing, even though it hasn't been great when he's gotten there.
14:47And that's the role that Jaden is going to play.
14:49You know, but even at Jared Goff, who I don't think is as good as Brock Purdy.
14:54But when you watch him on the field, you're like, oh, I mean, you look like an NFL quarterback,
14:59you 6-foot-5 dude, you.
15:02Brock does not look like an NFL quarterback.
15:03He doesn't even look like an NFL player.
15:06Yeah, I don't know if people think that.
15:08I do think it's more about draftism.
15:11And I also think that the bias comes more from the Kyle Shanahan and the players that
15:17are around him, more so than like how big Brock is.
15:21Nobody really knows how big he is or how ruddy his cheeks are.
15:25He's got those rosy red cheeks and he looks like an aw shucks kind of a kid and he's young
15:30and all the rest of it.
15:31He may not have ever even shaved in his life and all the rest of it.
15:36But that's kind of it.
15:37I think that it's more about the draft spot and the team and the coach more so than it
15:43is how he looks.
15:44Brock's going to get a Toyota commercial.
15:46He ain't getting signed by Gillette.
15:49He's not.
15:51And that's what I mean.
15:52Like he just, you just said it, rosy cheeks.
15:56Like he looks, it's so aw shucks.
15:59It's so, you know, God and family and my wife and rosy shirts.
16:05I think it's more about a team though than it is about how he looks and how big he is.
16:09Lots of different legs on the spider, but Tom Brady was largely the same until he started
16:13winning title six, four and you got to know him six, four, but slow and not with a big
16:17arm like the most handsome thing that you've ever seen in your damn life.
16:21Well, you figured that out once he started winning Super Bowls.
16:23No, I mean like it wasn't like the ladies were slow on the uptake with Tom.
16:28That's not something you don't notice.
16:30He's got a very, like I, I hate saying it this way.
16:33There's a masculinity that the world, whether you admit it or not, you want, you want six
16:38foot four.
16:39You want howitzer arm.
16:41You want rugged cheeks like you want that.
16:44You just do.
16:46And he's not that again.
16:48I've said it a hundred times.
16:49I I've got kids.
16:51I've got two high schoolers.
16:53Brock looks like the kids walking home from school with a backpack.
16:56That's what he looks like.
16:57And it's very all shocks and it's very, I'm going to sound like my coach and stuff.
17:02And if anything goes wrong, it's going to be me.
17:05You know, I've got to be better and we move on.
17:08It's very, very milk and cookies and that's not a problem at all.
17:13But I, I do think that's a piece of why people just refuse to believe what they see because
17:19it doesn't look like that quarterbacking at the great level doesn't look like that.
17:25It never has before.
17:26Well, if you go across the league, there's a lot of those guys.
17:29I think there's as many of those guys as there are the other guys you're, you're describing
17:34these big strapping six, five, six, six guys.
17:37And you talk about Kirk Cousins is another guy who's not a huge deal.
17:42And Derek Carr's not a big guy and a lot bigger than Brock, Brock six, one.
17:47It's not like he's a five, 10 Bryce young.
17:49I mean, he's big enough to get the job done, but well, according to you now, but of course
17:54last week, half the world thought Brock was too short because the ball got tipped.
17:58I never said he's too short because the ball got tipped.
18:01We talked about it.
18:02I was saying yesterday is that every tip ball is not the same and balls that he throws that
18:07are tipped down the field are not really tip balls.
18:09And I'll say that for Wednesday and Greg Cosell, I got some arsenal coming next week.
18:13I can't wait.
18:14I'm not rolling over like I did this week.
18:16Greg Cosell.
18:17I got blindsided while we're live at the Madden studios.
18:20Greg Cosell.
18:21Yeah.
18:22I'm going to give him a couple of bams and booms.
18:24Let's see that.
18:25Dan Orlovsky just said this short time ago, NFL live on ESPN.
18:29This is the best football Brock produce career this first six weeks because of the injuries
18:34that he's had to deal with and all the different pieces, offensive lines been in flux and the
18:40most consistent football of his career.
18:42The timing of their past game right now is as consistent as it's been since Brock birdie
18:47took over.
18:48Some of the throws to Kittle down to the red zone are absolutely flawless.
18:53I would say outside of Sam Darnold, he's probably playing the best football event, any NFC quarterback
18:58right now.
18:59The second thing is this, and I know this is big.
19:03He's entered into the Patrick Mahomes category when it comes to back breaking runs with his
19:07legs.
19:08So many times this season and you saw it again last night, second and 10 Brock pretty scrambles
19:14for a first down third and eight Brock pretty scrambles for a first down.
19:18So often we say that about Patrick.
19:20It's like, got to get off the field, breaks your back with a scramble.
19:23He's kind of entered that world where his legs have become such a pivotal piece in massive
19:29moments.
19:30Okay.
19:31I, you didn't hear it from me.
19:32That's Dan Orlovsky who compared him to Patrick Mahomes and said, we've arrived at that level.
19:36Well, he needs to take a number because Dan Dibley had it before Dan Orlovsky tried to
19:41gravy train on my take.
19:42Who is your favorite?
19:43Dan, who's your favorite?
19:45Dan has appeared on this show today.
19:47I know you're not asking me.
19:48Oh no.
19:49You're asking me.
19:50Of course.
19:51He doesn't like you.
19:52Right.
19:53You're trying to troll him to try to come at me.
19:54I just want to see what, you know, like which take.
19:56And Grandy's grades coming up later today and I can't wait to hear it.
20:00A guy trying to bury Brock Purdy after a great performance and then he backpedaled after
20:04I put him into a corner.
20:05But go ahead.
20:06Grandy, your favorite Dan.
20:08Was that, was that directed towards me?
20:10Well, I just happened to be looking at you when I said it.
20:13I know you're not asking me cause the answer is me.
20:15You're asking me.
20:17It's me.
20:18And Orlovsky's right.
20:19He had four runs yesterday.
20:20A couple of scrambles.
20:21He had four carries in all and at least two of them went for first downs.
20:25And so that's what I'm talking about.
20:27Don't just look at the numbers, people.
20:29Watch the damn tape.
20:30Do yourself a favor and watch the game.
20:33Put down the nachos and watch the game.
20:35It's not about 18 for 28.
20:37It's about what he does in totality as a quarterback.
20:42Straight from America's foremost tape watcher, Dan Dibley.
20:45I'm up there.
20:46Yeah.
20:47I'm no Greg Cosell.
20:49We're going to buy the kneecap off.
20:50I'll go Dan Campbell.
20:51Okay.
20:52Perfect.
20:53I had to sneak that one in there.
20:54That was well played.
20:55At least I'm in the bronze medal spot for now.
20:57For now.
20:58Yeah.
20:59We're looking for more Dan's.
21:00If your name's Dan, 888-957-957 is the number.
21:05Brian in San Ramon is next.
21:06Hi Brian.
21:07Hi, how are you guys doing?
21:09What's up?
21:10I just want to talk about, I don't think it's that unusual that he hasn't got his due respect
21:16yet.
21:17Even Tom Brady, when he went against Kurt Warner, he wasn't considered in the same class
21:22as Kurt Warner.
21:23And I think even after they won that Super Bowl, they were still considered kind of flukish.
21:29Well, except for what you're referring to, Brian, at that time Kurt Warner had already
21:36won a Super Bowl and Tom Brady had played like what, 10 games?
21:41He played like 10 football games.
21:43And so people were like literally still trying to even understand who this was.
21:48And they were trying to process the idea of the Patriots getting to the Super Bowl after
21:52their quarterback had gotten hurt.
21:54At that time, Tom Brady felt like Nick Foles with the Eagles.
21:57It was like, well, what is this?
22:00Well, you know, quarterback got hurt.
22:01You guys aren't going to win now.
22:03And then they did.
22:04And then they won the whole thing.
22:05So I get the comparison at a certain point in the career, but Brock is way past that
22:14point.
22:15And Brady was getting the credit by then, in large part because he had actually won
22:18a Super Bowl, which Brock hasn't done.
22:21But you know my take, he's going to win the Super Bowl and he's still not going to get
22:26his due.
22:27Yeah, and I don't believe that.
22:28And I think that he's starting to get his due more and more.
22:31And if he keeps playing like he did last night throughout this season and they become a playoff
22:35team again, he's going to get his due no matter what.
