Lions Quarterback Jared Goff joins Karsch and Anderson to discuss the win over the Arizona Cardinals and preview the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.
Transcript
00:00Jared, as always, thanks for being with us and coming off a win on the road in Arizona.
00:07How do you guys feel this week?
00:08Yeah, I feel good.
00:10Anytime you get a road win is a good time and they were a good team and they are a good
00:15team and they were coming off a big win and yeah, it was a good one to get.
00:20It's crazy because you say anytime you get a call or get a win, it's a good thing.
00:24When you look around the NFL and see that Sunday and Monday, and I don't know how much
00:28of attention, you probably pay no attention to who's favorite and who's not, but the four
00:33biggest underdogs all won outright.
00:37What does that say about the league?
00:39Yeah, I think there's a ton of parity.
00:42There is and it happens every year where teams come out of nowhere and win games and vice
00:47versa where teams that you expect to be great aren't and you try to take it one week at
00:52a time and get better every week.
00:54I think that's something we're good at, but it's hard, man.
00:56It really is.
00:57Where do you see the differences in that, though?
01:00Everybody wants to work hard.
01:01Everybody's trying to work hard, but are there little nuances that you can kind of let people
01:04in on and things that you guys do specifically that maybe get you better prepared?
01:11You know, I don't know.
01:12I'm not in the other 31 buildings, but our process seems to work for us over the last
01:17year and a half, two and a half years.
01:22It's been fun.
01:23Dan does a great job keeping us focused and letting us know what the task at hand is each
01:27week.
01:28I think he does a great job of laying out the game plan for us and making sure we know
01:30how we're going to attack each team.
01:32Can you describe what it's like to see another blue wave on the road with these Lions fans?
01:37I mean, do you guys talk about it on the sidelines or in the locker room about how amazing it
01:41is to have the support?
01:43Yeah, that one was insane.
01:46It really was.
01:47It was really cool to see and run out of the tunnel.
01:51Usually you get booed and that was the first one I've ever experienced where we weren't
01:55getting booed.
01:56It was loud and it did feel like a home game at times.
02:00We've had a lot of good blue waves and that one may be at the top of the list up to this
02:03point.
02:04I'm excited to see it keep going.
02:06Can you give us a tangible difference what it was like being the hunter and now knowing
02:11that everybody is shooting and gunning to beat the Lions?
02:15Is there something that you can say, here's what I've noticed is different?
02:20Yeah, you know, that's a good question.
02:24I think sometimes you end up getting things on defense that maybe you hadn't seen on film
02:32yet.
02:33So they're throwing something at you for the first time and that's not to say that that's
02:37because they want to beat us more than some other team.
02:39I think it's to say that they respect us as an offense and even as a defense and want
02:45to throw something new at you to try to beat you and yeah, sure, we are seen as the hunted
02:50now.
02:51We have one team in the NFC North and one team in the playoffs, but at the same time,
02:55it's still early and we got to still prove ourselves.
02:58How much more fun is it to be though that that team that is counted on to be a contending
03:03team?
03:04Yeah, it's fun.
03:05It is fun to be the underdog too, but it is fun to be the contending team and you know,
03:11you hope to be and we're two and one right now.
03:14I think it's still early.
03:15Like I said, you know, everyone has their external expectations and we're just staying
03:18steady one week at a time, trying to improve and trying to get better.
03:21All right, you guys come out and everybody knew about the red zone issues.
03:25You go right down the field and score and you do it a few times in the first half.
03:28I mean, maybe we made too much out.
03:30It was just kind of a one-off as far as the red zone is concerned, but how much focus
03:34was there going into that game to get off to a fast start and finish drives in the end
03:39zone?
03:40Yeah, of course we wanted to do that.
03:42I don't think we put much stock into what happened the week before.
03:45It was just, like he said, in our opinion, kind of a one-off and something that we addressed
03:49and seemed to fix and we'll move forward that way and hopefully don't have to deal with
03:54that again.
03:56And it felt like you had the whole menu in that first half and everything was working.
04:00You didn't throw an incomplete pass.
04:03Was that this offense at its peak in the first half of that game?
04:07Yeah, I think that felt like us.
04:09I think, you know, maybe you sprinkle in a couple of downfield hits there and you're
04:14really feeling like us and feeling good about, you know, blowing that game open at some point.
04:19But yeah, that first half was close to about as good as it gets.
04:22And then the second half was, it was really, you know, kind of unacceptable for us from
04:25an offensive standpoint and something that we've addressed and need to get better at.
04:31And there's some urgency to us, for us in that way.
04:35We can't just allow our defense to have to carry us through at the end there.
04:39And we got to try to blow that game open and make it easier on them and finish that game
04:43a lot earlier.
04:44That's interesting.
04:45You say it's unacceptable.
04:46Like, you guys look in the mirror and see it was more about you.
04:48You guys did something wrong?
04:49In the second half?
04:51Yeah, certainly.
04:52I don't think, yeah, it's just execution.
04:55And why does that happen from one half to the second half?
04:57I don't know.
04:58They didn't do much different.
04:59It wasn't like we were doing much different.
05:00Just, it wasn't clicking the same and, you know, mistakes were made and I got to be better
05:05and we all got to be better.
05:06But I think there's a lot of urgency this week to pick our stuff up offensively.
05:11And certainly in that second half, we'd like to replicate that first half for a whole game
05:15and we feel pretty good.
05:18It's fun to watch a game like that where all three aspects of the game, of a team game,
05:24like special teams, offense and defense, come through and, you know, maybe the offense didn't
05:27do as well in the second half.
05:29But Jack Fox, what Jack Fox is able to do, I think, you know, on a national scale, it
05:34goes completely under the radar because it's the punting game.
05:37But you guys get to see it, let alone every day in practice.
05:39But games on Sundays and Mondays, to see what Jack Fox does, you know, how much does
05:45that just make you guys smile and, thank God we have Jack Fox?
05:48Yeah, it really is a luxury to have.
05:51He's, in my opinion, he's the best in the league and, you know, he's so consistent and
05:56he's so reliable.
05:57I mean, I don't know how many times we punted in the second half, but we needed good ones
06:00every time and every time it seemed to be a good one.
06:03I think that coupled with, you know, the gunners, we have Dorsey running down there and downing
06:07those.
06:08Dorsey's as good of a gunner as there is in this league.
06:10When you got guys like that who put it late on the line every time, every play, and then
06:14a great punter like Jack, it really does become a luxury for us.
06:19You know, the first week, the thing you guys had to clean up was the third down conversions.
06:23Then it was the red zone efficiency.
06:25What needs to be cleared up the most from an offensive standpoint this week going into
06:29the game on Monday night against Seattle?
06:32You know, I don't know if there's one thing.
06:34I think it's just an overall urgency to get better and to improve and to know that, you
06:39know, what we've been maybe getting away with winning, won't be able to get away with as
06:45time goes on.
06:46We know that's the reality.
06:47We can't continue to score, you know, 20 points and no points in the second half and expect
06:51to win the amount of games we'd like to win this year.
06:53So we know that and we'll keep improving.
06:55I thought Dan said it great yesterday is, you know, we fixed up as we go and we're able
07:01to keep winning.
07:02As we go, we keep fixing stuff and you get to the point at the end of the year, hopefully
07:05you're looking up and, you know, you don't have much to fix anymore, but you're always
07:09trying to improve.
07:10You're always trying to get better.
07:11And I think that's what this early part of the season is for, is for us to fix things
07:14and get on a little bit of a roll at some point.
07:17I read somewhere that players just love trick plays, the hook and ladder.
07:22Does that play have a special name?
07:25It does.
07:26It was called Shake and Bake.
07:32Yeah, it's still right from Talladega Nights.
07:37We've been cooking that one for quite some time and I think we, I think we started doing
07:42it in OTAs and it was a brainchild of Ben and he thought about it, he kind of brought
07:47it to me one day.
07:48He's like, you think we can do this?
07:49I'm like, hell yeah, we can do that.
07:50And Gibbs and St. Brown, we repped it with them, shoot up to this point, probably 10
07:55to 20 times in practice.
07:56And so when it came up in the game, it was, it was really like clockwork, just getting
08:00it done.
08:02But it's Shake and Bake.
08:03Ben.
08:04Ben, that was Ben's, yeah.
08:05Well, if you ain't first, you're last.
08:06I mean, that's how that works.
08:07That's right.
08:08Look, it's, Seattle's been a tricky opponent over the past several years with the Lions.
08:14What is it about them that makes them so difficult to play against?
08:17And do you guys use this for motivation at all, that you haven't beaten them in a while?
08:22Yeah, sure.
08:24I think, I think we, we haven't beaten them in a while.
08:26It's been three years in a row they've came to Detroit and beat us and, or maybe that
08:31first year we went to Seattle.
08:32I can't quite remember.
08:33But we haven't beat them in a while and it does mean something to us, certainly.
08:37But they're a good team, man.
08:38They really are.
08:39They're good on offense.
08:40They're good on defense.
08:41They're good on stretch teams.
08:42When Pete Carroll was there, they were very well coached, obviously, and McDonald's there
08:45now and they're, they're still well coached and are a great team and we'll have our hands
08:49full.
08:50All right.
08:51This may or may not be a thing.
08:54The black uniforms.
08:55How do you feel about the black uniforms?
08:57I love them.
08:59They're great.
09:00They're great.
09:01What do you mean?
09:02Well, I mean, I don't know if you care.
09:03Like some players don't care.
09:04We work with John Jansen.
09:05He's like, just give me a shirt.
09:06He doesn't care.
09:07But does it fire you guys up at all that you got this special uniform?
09:11Hell yeah.
09:12I think they're cool.
09:13I think they're really cool.
09:14It makes me think about like Calvin and that picture of him and Roy Williams with the,
09:18with the gray pants.
09:19I don't know what we're wearing, chant-wise this week, but yeah, it'll be cool.
09:23How different is the pregame prep for a Monday night game versus a one o'clock start?
09:27Do you get thrown off a routine or you've been around the league long enough where you've
09:30had Monday night games that you can just get into a whole new routine?
09:34Yeah, you, you, you've been around, you've done it.
09:36I mean, especially here now we've had night games.
09:38It seems like more often than not in the last, you know, think about how many home games
09:42we've had last five home games, I think three or four of them have been night games going
09:45back to last year.
09:46So we've got a pretty good routine with it now and feel good about it.
09:50Squirrels, deer, or chipmunks?
09:53What was going on there?
09:54Yeah, he's barking at nothing.
09:57He just barks at whatever it is.
09:58If there's a shadow, he's barking at it.
10:00Jared, thanks for your time.
10:03Good luck.
10:04Look forward to talking next week.
10:05All right, guys.
10:07Take care.
