Jared Goff joins Karsch and Anderson to discuss the win over the Vikings, securing the No. 1 seed, OC Ben Johnson, and more.
Transcript
00:00Great way to open the show today, as we've got the Lions quarterback, the division-winning
00:05Detroit Lions quarterback, the No. 1 seed Detroit Lions quarterback, Jared Goff joins
00:12us at this time here on 97.1 The Ticket.
00:14Jared, as always, we've appreciated all season long.
00:17We know you well enough.
00:18We'll congratulate you on winning the division and getting the No. 1 seed, but I know you
00:23always have bigger fish to fry and you got their eye on the prize, but how would you
00:26characterize the feelings today?
00:29Yeah, it feels good.
00:30You know, the last 48 hours, it's a good feeling, knowing we got a little rest and get to decompress
00:35just a bit and get some guys back and get some extra sleep and the whole thing and knowing
00:40we get a home game next week and knowing it's going to be against a team who's going to
00:44play a hard four-quarter game this week, yeah, it's all good things and like you said, though,
00:48we know we got the big one we're all going after now and it starts next week.
00:55So when do you actually start to go back to work and start to study film and stuff
00:58like that and get back to team activities?
01:02I mean, we're in today.
01:03Okay, so not a whole lot of time to enjoy that then, huh?
01:08Well, yeah, I mean, we don't have, you know, an opponent to prepare for, but yeah, we're
01:13in today doing a little work.
01:15So you've already mentioned the rest.
01:17Is that basically the biggest part of this and getting guys back?
01:20Because I know after the game you were like, hey, it doesn't matter who's out there, but
01:22it will be nice to get some people back offensively, David Montgomery, maybe Carlton Davis defensively.
01:28How much can that give you a boost?
01:30Yeah, you know, getting anyone back is helpful just for body purposes.
01:35But like we've said in the past and like we've shown, you know, it doesn't seem to matter
01:39and certainly defensively with all the guys they have out, they don't care.
01:41Those guys are just a bunch of dogs who don't care.
01:44It's next man up and they just keep on showing up, keep on coming out to play and they're
01:49a dangerous crew right now and I'm happy to have them on our side.
01:52Is there anyone on that defense that in particular you're happy for?
01:56Guys that you saw battle as backups, you faced them in practice, that got on the field and
02:01made a play.
02:02Is there anybody that stands out?
02:04I mean, there's a lot, yeah.
02:06I don't know if I can single, you know, any one of them out, but I mean, I think the easy
02:11one this past week is Amik.
02:13You know, he's playing nickel for us a lot throughout the season, you know, he's moved
02:17out to corner with some of the corner injuries and, you know, had a big challenge this week
02:21and Justin Jefferson's as good as they get in our league and he was tasked with that
02:25and stood up to the challenge and not surprising to any of us, you know, he's a hell of a player,
02:29he has been all year and I think he kind of embodies that, you know, he doesn't care,
02:33you know, what you say, what you want, how many guys we have out there, how big he is,
02:38you know, he's just going to come out, he's going to play tough, sticky man coverage and
02:41make it hard on the opposing quarterback and he just continues to do it.
02:44Can you talk about that fourth down play you had, the conversion to Jamison Williams, I
02:48think it was fourth and six and it looks like it was one of these blitz buster plays
02:52that you have to wait and wait and wait to the last second before you deliver the football
02:57and knowing that you're going to take a hit that you took can kind of take us through
03:01that and what goes through your mind trying to prepare yourself for knowing you're going
03:04to have to take that hit?
03:05Yeah, you know, there was a little bit of a cat and mouse game going on there with us
03:11and their defense with, you know, checks and them checking and us checking and them checking
03:16and that whole thing.
03:17So, yeah, there I knew they were bringing cover, zero blitz and Jamo's kind of my only
03:21option there as the quickest route coming across the formation and just kind of had
03:24to let them clear that middle of the coverage because they'll drop out some of those interior
03:28guys, just kind of had to let them clear to the other side and, you know, with his speed
03:31it doesn't take long so he got over there pretty quickly and was able to put it out
03:35there for them and made a good conversion.
03:37Speaking of cat and mouse game, the fourth and two late, a field goal puts you up three
03:40scores, you guys break the huddle, it's on their six-yard line.
03:45You get them to jump off sides.
03:47I feel like you guys even did it differently than everybody else because viewing on TV
03:51you can almost tell when a team's trying to get somebody to jump off sides and you guys
03:56were so standard operating procedure.
03:59Was that part of the plan there is we're not going to make it as obvious as everybody else
04:04does?
04:05Yeah, you know, we do put a lot of time into, you know, that situation and trying to get
04:11people to jump off sides.
04:12We take a lot of pride in it, making it all look the same and we've been pretty successful
04:16at it this year.
04:17We've had a bunch of those down in their tight fourth down and I think a lot of it's the
04:21Dan Campbell effect, you know, we've shown to go for it on a lot of these fourth downs
04:27so they can't just say, oh yeah, they're just not going to snap it and they're going to
04:31keep the field goal.
04:32They have to be cured up and ready to go because we may snap it, we have snapped it.
04:36I think that Green Bay game, everyone thought we weren't going to snap that one and sure
04:40enough we did.
04:41We fired off the ball and we're able to pick up the first down, keep the field goal.
04:43So teams remember that stuff.
04:44They see it and they're ready to go.
04:46But yeah, we got to jump.
04:48After Terry and Arnold goes out of the game, they kick a field goal.
04:51It's 10-9.
04:53Do you say anything on the sidelines or does the offense get together and say, all right,
04:57we got to kick things into gear now we've been kind of, you know, slow motion a little
05:00bit here.
05:01We need to start scoring because you guys end up scoring three straight touchdowns.
05:05What's set on the sideline?
05:06Any words go between the offense and defense?
05:09No, not much is said.
05:10We knew.
05:11We were so dang close all day.
05:12We were just getting, I mean, we were getting stifled a little bit.
05:15Their defense was doing a good job and, you know, I was trying to settle in a little bit
05:18and see things and they were doing some things a little bit differently and you give them
05:22a ton of credit, man.
05:23They were making it hard on us early, but I think you give us a ton of credit for adjusting
05:27and making it work in that second half and certainly up front, those guys protecting
05:30for me and opening those run lanes were incredible all day and obviously what Gibbs did was incredible.
05:37But yeah, just once we settled in, we knew we were so close, we knew what they were doing
05:40on defense.
05:41We just kind of had to, you know, do our job just a little bit better, identify what they
05:46were doing a little bit better and execute and we were on our way.
05:50It kind of goes underrated.
05:51The way that the adjustments come at half or halftime, I mean, the defense, after I
05:55said that field goal, they shut things down.
05:58Your offense, you guys pick things up.
06:00How underrated is it of what goes on at halftime with the coordinators and the team coming
06:04together and figuring things out?
06:06Yeah, you know, sometimes there's a lot that goes on.
06:09Sometimes there's nothing that goes on.
06:10Sometimes we're just hanging out, getting a little water, getting a little bit of a
06:13breather.
06:14But yeah, in a game like that, yeah, there's absolutely some adjustments made and Ben and
06:18the staff and AG and his staff are making changes and making sure we're on what we need
06:23to be on and then come out in the second half and get ready to go from there.
06:27Have you seen all the speculation this week about your offensive coordinator Ben Johnson
06:31and head coaching positions?
06:34No.
06:35What are they saying?
06:36They're saying he's got three interviews lined up for later this week.
06:39Three?
06:40Wow.
06:41All right.
06:42Good for him.
06:43How would you characterize your feelings towards that?
06:44I'm sure you'd love to keep him, but...
06:46He's had interviews before, hasn't he?
06:47Yes, he has.
06:48Yes, he has.
06:49Yeah, so I don't know.
06:50We'll see.
06:51You know, obviously I love Ben.
06:52He's the best and I wish him the best in whatever he ends up doing, but he knows I'd like to
06:57have him for at least one more and we'll see where it goes.
07:00You said something I thought that was really interesting on the Peacock postgame show.
07:03You said that one of his strengths is he provides you clarity and you guys problem
07:08solve together.
07:10Can you give us an example, whether it was from this game or any game this year, where
07:13during the week is a great example of Ben Johnson providing Jared Goff clarity and problem
07:19solving an issue that a team was potentially going to give you?
07:24You know, it's going to be hard for me to give you an example because it's all day,
07:27every day.
07:28That's what we're doing, kind of, is talking through these problems and fixing these problems
07:31and, you know, whether it's first or second down, whether it's third down, whether it's
07:35red zone, all we're doing is trying to, you know, simplify it for myself and I'm just
07:40constantly asking questions and I think a lot of times, you know, in our little post-practice
07:45meetings that we have is just me, you know, hammering out some of the issues that I may
07:50see and him going, no, no, we're good because of this, that, and the other or, yeah, yeah,
07:53that's a good idea.
07:54We should add this.
07:55And so we're just constantly fixing problems and I'm very thankful to have a coach who
08:00listens and who wants to hear from me and wants to hear what I have to say and ideas
08:05and it's been fun to, you know, get some of those ideas in and certainly when they're
08:10your own, you feel like you need to make them work so it's fun to be, you know, and working
08:13with them.
08:14Got to be fun to work with an offense like this.
08:17What Jameer Gibbs has done all season and the game he had on Sunday night and then watching
08:21Jameson Williams, you get him over 1,000 yards.
08:25It's got to be a quarterback's dream to step into an offense that has this many weapons.
08:29Yeah, it really is.
08:30It's been, it's been so fun for me and really for, you know, years now it's been, it's been
08:34a lot of fun to be with these guys and to just the continuity of who we have up front,
08:38who we have at the skill positions, myself coming back for, you know, the fourth year
08:41now it's, it's, it's fun, man.
08:43It really is.
08:44And it's explosive.
08:45It's smart.
08:46It's, it's fast.
08:47It's, you know, it's, it's, it's aggressive, it's, you know, physical, it's all, everything
08:52you want in offense and we've had good success and now it's time to keep it going.
08:56So can you compare at all what it was like going into this year's playoffs compared to
09:01what you felt like going into last year's playoffs?
09:04Um, geez, uh, I don't know, you know, it seems pretty similar, I guess.
09:10I don't, I'm not, I'm not sure, you know, the difference is we don't have to play this
09:13week.
09:14I know that's not a great answer.
09:15That's a big one.
09:16Yeah.
09:17Yeah.
09:18We, we get a little bit of rest.
09:19We feel good.
09:20Um, we, we don't know who we're going to play yet.
09:21We'll find out in about a week and go from there, but yeah, I, I think we feel about
09:25the same.
09:26And I think, you know, last year after losing that NFC championship, it created, you know,
09:31this little fire within everybody going like, all right, we're not going to let that happen
09:34again.
09:35And it started right there, that right, right then there in that locker room after that
09:38game.
09:39And that's kind of carried through the off season and now in this season, and I guess
09:41that would be the difference.
09:43We've talked a lot about the Detroit football culture.
09:46How would you describe the culture of the Detroit Lions locker room?
09:50Yeah, it's pretty strong.
09:52It really is.
09:53And, um, it starts with Dan obviously and trickles into his coaches, trickles into our
09:57players and, um, you know, we, we don't care where, when, how, and in what way, you know,
10:03we're going to find a way to win.
10:04Um, you know, even when everyone's saying we should rest our starters against the Niners,
10:08we're going to go out there and play and find a way to win.
10:10Um, and that's probably the reason why we won against the Vikings because we play all
10:13our starters in that San Francisco game.
10:15Right?
10:16Like that's, that's gotta be the reason why.
10:17So, um, no, I'm just playing around, but.
10:23I wanted to give somebody a hard time about that cause I think when, when Dan makes decisions
10:27like that and they're questioned after they work, it's pretty, it's pretty fascinating
10:31to me.
10:32Of course.
10:33Of course.
10:34Uh, all right.
10:35Final thing you guys, well, from me, you guys have become a sensation and in Detroit, even
10:40around the country, did you see the video of actor comedian, Dax Shepard at the Golden
10:46Globes watching your game on his cell phone, the Michigan native.
10:53I think that, yeah, Dax is from here, right?
10:55Yeah.
10:56Uh, yeah, that was cool.
10:57Uh, he's, he's obviously a fan and, um, I'm a fan of his and it's fun.
11:01It's fun when that crossover happens and, um, yeah, we're, we're, we're doing some fun
11:05things right now and it's, it's fun to be a part of and I'm happy to be here and happy
11:09to be winning and happy that Dax is watching.
11:11That's fun.
11:12Of the crossovers and the people you've gotten to meet, the famous people, what, what's been
11:16the coolest for you?
11:17Oh man, uh, it's hard to beat Eminem.
11:20That's, that's, he's up there and, um, got to meet him a couple of times and, uh, he's,
11:25he's my favorite artist ever and seeing him at the games always gets me fired up too.
11:29And, um, I love that he loves rooting us on.
11:32What's the toughest part about being a quarterback in the NFL?
11:35I know I would imagine every quarterback has a different thing, whether, whether it's just
11:38processing the plays or, you know, reading a defense, whatever it is, just the dealing
11:43with the media on a daily basis.
11:45What is it for you?
11:46Yeah.
11:47For me, it's probably this show every Tuesday.
11:49No, I'm totally kidding.
11:52Um, uh, you know, it's, it's probably, uh, the balance of just time and, and, um, you
11:59know, when, when, when to, when, when to push and pull as a leader and, um, you know, how
12:05to, how to handle, you know, certain situations in a locker room and, um, obviously the foot
12:10on the football stuff on the field is, is challenging as itself, but, you know, outside
12:14of that, you know, just handling daily life and your time management and still trying
12:18to be, you know, a great husband and son and, and, you know, brother and at the same time
12:22be a great teammate.
12:23And, um, that's the part that you try to balance and, um, I feel like I'm doing a pretty good
12:27job of that, but it's, it's always a challenge.
12:29Lastly, Doug had mentioned to me the other day that, uh, for the first time he tried
12:33the cold plunge.
12:34I'm wondering, is Jared Goff a cold plunge guy?
12:38Yeah, I do.
12:39I do like the cold plunge.
12:40And I, and there was a time where I was doing it a little bit more consistently than I am
12:43right now.
12:44And, um, you guys are, you know, giving me a little kick in the butt then I guess I gotta
12:47go do it.
12:48But, uh, yeah, I, I will certainly be doing it this week on our recovery week rest, rest
12:52week and getting my body back, but yeah, no, I am a fan of it and I think you guys should
12:56do it more often.
12:57You guys should try doing it every day.
12:58That'd be fun.
12:59Yeah.
13:00I don't know that that's going to happen.
13:01I tried it once and it was excruciating, but, um, final thing for me, I lied, Jared, I got
13:07one more thing because I think it's important being at home.
13:10The difference the fans make talking to the fans right now, tell them what it's like playing
13:16at Ford Field as the Lions quarterback.
13:18We have, we have the best fans in the world and it's, it's such an advantage for us being
13:23in front of them and the energy and passion they bring, um, and the feelings they give
13:28us pregame during the game, the whole thing, it's, it's such a, it's such an insane atmosphere
13:33and that's not even to mention the, the fall starts and the delay games that they're causing.
13:38Um, yeah, so they know it, but, but they're certainly helping us win a lot of these games
13:42and to get this home field advantage and to be in front of them and to give them, uh,
13:47that reward, I guess, to, you know, come out and help us win these games is all you can
13:50ask for.
13:51And, um, I know they'll be fired up and, you know, whatever it is two weeks from now and,
13:54um, we'll be ready to go too, but I can't wait to play in front of them for two more
13:57games.
13:58Jared, appreciate your time.
13:59And I think given all that you've done for Detroit, I think the least Gator and I can
14:03do is do the cold plunge.
14:04Yeah, we'll commit.
14:05We'll commit.
14:06Every day.
14:07It's not, it's not supposed to be easy.
14:08That's why it's good for you.
14:09You know, there you go.
14:10Thanks for your time.
14:11Good luck.
14:12We appreciate it.
14:13All right, guys.
14:15There he is.
14:16Lions quarterback, Jared Goff joins us every Tuesday.
14:17What a great way to start the show.
