00:00:00Could not be better as the referee Mr. Patrick Robin from France
00:00:05ready to start this match with the
00:00:07Welsh first 5-8 mark ring to get the match underway
00:00:16Wales playing from right to left in the first half
00:00:20The side without a win in international rugby a test match level in 1991 six matches five losses and a draw will they break their
00:00:27duck today
00:00:30As
00:00:35Mark ring starts the match and immediately the ball knocked forward by the big lock forward Kevin Moseley
00:00:43Mr. Robin
00:00:45Waiting to see if there's any advantage there to the western Samoans
00:00:47There wasn't and so the first scrum of the match 15 meters outside the 22
00:01:00Any other tour
00:01:04The Samoan prop on the near side having trouble getting down
00:01:08Now it's the turn of the Welsh front row
00:01:10Having their problems as well and we've seen this in most of the world cup matches to date where
00:01:15There's usually been problems getting the first couple of scrums down
00:01:24Telling fire to get the ball into the scrum even if it has moved a little off its axis
00:01:29As he puts it over the top a testing kick for the fullback
00:01:33Anthony Clement, but the Samoan players up offside inside the 10 meter circle the Welsh have the option
00:01:43And the scrum will take place from where the western Samoan halfback Matthew Byer
00:01:48Put that little kick over the top
00:01:50The Welsh front row with the Lawrence Delaney Kenny Walters the hooker and Mike Griffiths the loose head prop
00:01:59Go forward
00:02:04Ball there for Robert Jones
00:02:06Who in turn has got to test the Samoan fullback
00:02:10But it's a little halfback that goes in and takes it well on the 22
00:02:12Deep
00:02:28So an early attacking opportunity here for
00:02:31for the Welsh
00:02:32It's the western Samoan 22 and it's very fast strike too fast
00:02:36In fact for the halfback and coming through there was Apollo Peralini kicks the ball deep back there is Clements
00:02:41And Stephen Basham up very quickly on the Welsh fullback
00:02:4724 year old Ken Swansea who has replaced
00:02:51Thorburn Paul Thorburn who in fact walked away from the Welsh side disillusioned with the strife that had beset Welsh rugby
00:02:57over the last couple of years and retiring from the game at the age of 28
00:03:00Into his place wearing the number 15 jersey has come Anthony Clement
00:03:11Paul May and Marta Apikinen at the front of the lineup, but it was
00:03:14Kevin Mosley in the middle of the lineup who won it for Wales Richie Collins takes the pass
00:03:20He's lost it a few meters outside the 22
00:03:24And those Samoan forwards have been penalized for not staying on their feet and so the first penalty of the match
00:03:35And Clement the Welsh fullback
00:03:42So
00:03:54It's been an encouraging start by Samoa that they can they can just hold their own and hold their position in the first 10 minutes
00:03:59It's an intimidating place to play Cardiff Farms Park and with the crowd behind Wales in these early stages Samoa have got to hold on
00:04:06And
00:04:10Pushing in the lineup Kevin Mosley and
00:04:15Women an infringement by Kevin Mosley and so a free kick awarded
00:04:20To Western Samoa 10 meters inside their own half
00:04:23Stephen Basher putting it high in the air. That's a good kick from the Western Samoa first by that giving
00:04:28An opportunity for his forwards to get on the interval, but well taken by Richie Collins
00:04:32The Welsh loose ball in midway 22 at halfway, it's their quick ball for Jones
00:04:36Solid tackle made by Tungaloa, but I think he might have been outside
00:04:46Things are pointed at to Timo Tungaloa and the Welsh take the tap and decide to move it wide
00:04:49But the ball has gone astray, but nice hands there from number 13
00:04:52The youngster Scott Gibbs at centre did well to retrieve that awkward pass
00:04:56It's interesting that Samoans would go for the up and under from that penalty BG Williams
00:05:02One of their coaches has said all along they may struggle in the lineup
00:05:05So I think they'll do the up and under quite a bit
00:05:08He's wanting to keep the ball in play rather than giving the Welsh the opportunity to take the line out and so
00:05:16But the Welsh also from the free kick keen to take the ball and run it rather than kick the touch
00:05:22And an opportunity here for Samoa
00:05:26With this penalty from this a very long range. It's the best part of 47-48 meters for the fullback
00:05:34Ayalupo
00:05:40And while we have a very big crowd here at the national stadium at Cardiff Arms Park watching this match
00:05:47No one is I'm sure enjoying these pictures more than the many fans
00:05:50Enjoying these pictures more than the many thousands of people watching this match by satellite live
00:05:55Back in Western Samoa watching it on giant screens on a closed circuit satellite
00:05:59We understand there is the best part of six or seven thousand people at two venues in Apia one at the main
00:06:04Rugby stadium at Apia Park and another in the town itself
00:06:08Watching this very special occasion for Western Samoa
00:06:14And i'm sure those 7 000 folk who are watching it will be holding their breaths right now chance for Western Samoa
00:06:21So
00:06:26That's a very big kick from Ayalupo, but it's out to the right and so the score remains
00:06:32Nil all and we've had approximately seven minutes of play
00:06:35It's a very big kick with that ball, which has often proved difficult for many of the goal kickers
00:06:39To get it near the post from out near the halfway mark, but he had no problems with the length that this man
00:06:45And that is another thunderous kick from the Western Samoan fullback
00:06:50Yeah
00:06:54One of the more experienced members in the Western Samoan side played here three years ago
00:06:59When the Western Samoans were beaten 28-6 by Wales
00:07:03One of four players in the Western Samoan side today that played at that match three years ago
00:07:21So
00:07:23So the scrum to go down a couple of meters
00:07:26Inside the Western Samoan half Robert Jones this immensely experienced
00:07:30Welsh halfback
00:07:34Beating the scrum and Jones
00:07:36From inside his own half testing the Western Samoan fullback again, but he took it. Well anticipated it
00:07:41Well, and this is Stephen Bassett running it from his own 22 inside to his centre to a viagra
00:07:47Waiting underneath it has come. That's another very good kick from the Samoans tangala there as well
00:07:52And what has the referee ruled? I think he's ruled
00:07:58That in fact the tackle
00:08:00Was either early or late
00:08:02I thought that was a very harsh decision. I really did. I thought that was a very fair challenge and uh,
00:08:07Patrick Robban, he's he's going to be nervous himself, but uh, that was unlucky for some more
00:08:12Well, I think Mr
00:08:14Robban has ruled the tangala just got their refraction too early
00:08:16But as Jamie Salmon said and I can't help but agree with him
00:08:19It certainly seemed a well a well-timed tackle from a very well judged kick
00:08:22from Tuvaina
00:08:30As Matthew via the Western Samoan halfback
00:08:34Kicking the ball over the top
00:08:36Would have been a good confidence booster for Samoa breaking out from their own 22 and gaining 40 50 yards
00:08:41That sort of confidence may be needed later on in the game when they've got a turn around a deficit or confirm their
00:08:47superiority in the game
00:08:50The ala-latorre at the front of the line out
00:08:52For the Samoans has come in for Tevita Sio who had to pull out of the Samoan side
00:08:56After an injury problem once the team was named a couple of days ago Mark Ring
00:09:00But it really has been a match so far of testing kicks from the five eights and again
00:09:03Aja Lupo going underneath it, but the ball has gone loose
00:09:06But Stan Tuamalaita did well to dive on the loose ball
00:09:09It's there again for the Samoans and once again
00:09:14Showing a lot of maturity under pressure
00:09:17Clearing the ball calmly and quickly
00:09:19And Brian Leamer on the right wing finding his touch
00:09:24so the Samoans
00:09:26Absorbing this early pressure from Wales
00:09:30And it's been a very steady start by the Western Samoans and perhaps
00:09:34The most difficult period of this match may well be the first 10 or 15 minutes when they come
00:09:37Try to come to terms with the atmosphere and the emotion of the moment
00:09:41But they've certainly started extremely well indeed again Tuamalaita going down on the board clearing it quickly for his halfback
00:09:48And the steady and reliable boot of Stephen Bashard driving the Welshman back towards halfway
00:10:00I'm sure Jamie the fact that the Western Samoans have withered the storm
00:10:04From the first 10 minutes of this match so well can only act as a real boost to their confidence
00:10:08Absolutely. Wales are expected to win this game despite their recent problems and the closer the game stays the longer
00:10:14Better will be for Western Samoa
00:10:16Still a long way to go of course in the match good ball for the Western Samoans
00:10:24Again a line out infringement
00:10:28And the free kick awarded to Wales just inside the Western Samoan half
00:10:34Probably some thought given here to the possibility of a drop kick Clements, but no
00:10:39We'll get a test the Western Samoan defense again
00:10:43In goes Pat Lamb underneath it picked up by Peter Fatih Alofa again to Vaja again to Bashup and again cleared well by
00:10:50The Western Samoan first five eight very good play indeed
00:10:58Very well balanced player Stephen Bashup seems to have plenty of time to do what he
00:11:01Wishes to do when he gets the ball even when he was under pressure there
00:11:09So the line out to take place 10 meters inside the Welsh half
00:11:16Kevin Mosley the big
00:11:18giant lock forward in the Welsh side
00:11:20Winning lots of ball in the middle of the line. It's a loopy throw that goes to the back
00:11:23And finds Phil Davis and away come the Welsh forwards
00:11:27This is Amir Lewis up over halfway
00:11:30as the Welsh forwards
00:11:32Make 10 or 15 meters untidy ball. The Samoans have been penalized for a hand
00:11:37Trying to work the ball back when it was on the ground and an opportunity here for Wales
00:11:45That ball led by
00:11:47the Flannery policeman
00:11:49Amir Lewis who made his debut for Wales earlier this year in the five nations championship
00:11:54One of the less experienced players on their side with just four caps to his credit
00:12:02Here's the man though that tipping for the top down here in Wales
00:12:05He really has got a wonderful future Amir Lewis. He's probably the first name on the forward team
00:12:11Team list
00:12:12Mark Ring
00:12:14Big kick from ring but like so many goal kickers here at the world cup with this plastic ball
00:12:19Having problems with his direction
00:12:21on the long range kicks
00:12:23It'll be interesting how Wales cope with the goal kicking aspect. Paul Thorburn despite what he's done in the band in Wales
00:12:28Was a wonderful goal kicker
00:12:31And he's going to be very very difficult to replace and Ring doesn't do an awful lot of goal kicking these days
00:12:38And the Welsh calling for the shortened line out 10 meters from the Western Samoan line, it's Paul there. It's untidy ball and again
00:12:44It's snapped up the loose ball snapped up by the Western Samoans
00:12:48It's Tuvaenga that counts on it makes 15 meters up towards halfway turned back by
00:12:53Vaifala the loose forward
00:12:55and
00:12:56Kenny Walters caught offside
00:12:58And Samoa, Western Samoa with the penalty inside their own half
00:13:08With plenty of early pressure from the Welshman but no points to show for it so far
00:13:15Stephen Bashett again
00:13:17We see that tactic of the Western Samoans trying to keep him keeping the ball in play
00:13:20They don't want to get involved in any more lineouts than is necessary
00:13:23Is Peter Paddy-Alofa leading the charge inside the Welsh 22 for the first time?
00:13:27But the ball has gone astray from the Samoan hand and the Welsh decide to run it from inside the 22
00:13:32As the fullback Anthony Clement coming up, but taken in a very good tackle five meters outside the 22
00:13:39And taken into touch
00:13:41By Tad Lamb is the Welsh loose forward Emil Lewis
00:13:45So that tactic again worth paying good dividends there for the Samoans not kicking for touch keeping the ball in play
00:13:51but
00:13:53The Welsh
00:13:54Not afraid to move the ball from inside their own 22 trying to run themselves out of trouble
00:13:58But a very good tackle there made by Vaifali on the Welsh fullback
00:14:10Keenan manages to win ball for the Samoans
00:14:14This is Alalatoa the prop forward up to the 22
00:14:17Mata Apa Keenan trying to retain possession for the Samoans. It's there
00:14:23As Pat Lamb goes looking for the ball, but the whistle had gone
00:14:28Mr. Rabban convinced the Samoans weren't going to win it cleanly
00:14:37Samoans got some good options here
00:14:39They've got a big blind side they can go to and it looks that they might do that because Pat Lamb is lying in between
00:14:43the lock and the flanker
00:14:45And this is really their first opportunity they've had from set piece inside the Welsh half the long pass to the fullback
00:14:52But a badly directed pass and Ayalupa has to scurry back
00:14:56And tidy it up. So the Samoans perhaps being just a little too adventuresome
00:15:01With that first attempt to move the ball along the chain
00:15:05Yes, they'll be looking to give Tangaloa an early chance with the ball because he really with the ball in hand
00:15:09Can certainly motor and he's so strong as well
00:15:16So play back at halfway we've had just over 15 minutes of play in this first ever world cup match here at Carter Farms
00:15:29The knock on from the line out
00:15:33Phil Davis this huge man who packs down at the back of the Welsh scrum six feet four and 110 kilograms
00:15:45So
00:15:55It was just a little too impetuous to get their scrum down
00:15:59Mr. Raban being rather charitable there as
00:16:03Matthew Veya the halfback to Stephen Bashop
00:16:06and
00:16:08Bashop this time rolling the ball across the paddock with the wiper's kick and
00:16:12And forcing the left wing for Wales
00:16:17Arthur Emea to roll the run the ball into touch
00:16:23Good pick by Bashop, it gives Samoa the opportunity to have their own line out options by forcing Wales to take the ball into touch
00:16:31and they decided to opt for the
00:16:33two-man line out with Mata Arthur Keenan and Mark Vert was their lock forwards and
00:16:39Aparo Peralini
00:16:43And
00:16:44Rather fortuitously, it was Pat Lamb that managed to pick up the pass after gone astray away goes Fadi Aloper again
00:16:49The Western Samoa forwards doing well here winning good ball
00:16:52Bashop
00:16:55Frank Bunce
00:16:59And those Welsh forwards caught outside and an opportunity here for Western Samoa to put the first points on the board
00:17:05So
00:17:09Good break by Frank Bunce
00:17:10He got over the game line enabled the force to keep going forward and Wales
00:17:14as has been their problems, they've just given away penalties in ludicrous positions and
00:17:18There was no real need to be offside there and give away a penalty
00:17:21And there should be no excuses for failing to land this penalty goal and put Samoa three points in front
00:17:29Some very good work done here by the
00:17:31Western Samoan forwards the stamp of New Zealand forward play all over this passage of play and it's Frank Bunce
00:17:36Who got round his man?
00:17:38And did extremely well then to turn the ball back and you can see the Welsh forwards ahead of the ball
00:17:44And penalized and this should be three points for Western Samoa
00:17:50I think the more the Samoa run at mark ring because he's had a knee operation recently
00:17:54He's never been known for his defensive qualities and and Bunce cut inside him very comfortably then
00:18:00so
00:18:02Western Samoa have changed their goal kicker two shots at goal. Ayalupo the fullback has been replaced by Matthew Byer
00:18:15And so the new kids on the block Western Samoa
00:18:17Take the lead in this pool three world cup match here at Carter Farms Park
00:18:21They're hit by three points to nil Matthew Byer the man who plays his rugby for the Marisain Pets Club in Wellington
00:18:27Kicks the goal and the Western Samoans are hit by three points to nil
00:18:35But it's not the start that the Welsh crowd would be looking for
00:18:38Desperate to see an upturn in their fortunes today
00:18:40But having to come from behind and that's certainly been one of the problems for the Welsh side
00:18:44That when they are behind they tend to lose heart very quickly
00:18:49We saw that most graphically in their matches in Australia earlier this year
00:18:53Once the Australian team New South Wales and the Wallabies in particular were able to put a few points on the board
00:18:58The heart and commitment just seemed to go out of the Welsh side. Will it happen again here today at Carter Farms Park?
00:19:11Key man in the Welsh lineup
00:19:14To meet a Newport Newport player Kevin Mosley
00:19:17that's ball for
00:19:19Western Samoa, but the little halfback Matthew Byer swallowed up by the Welsh forwards pouring through the line out
00:19:27This is Frank Bunce taking the pass and he hasn't found touch or has he? Yes
00:19:34It's a very good kick from Frank Bunce
00:19:37the former Auckland and now North Harbour
00:19:40Midfield back playing at second 5-8 today for Western Samoa
00:19:43Very
00:19:48Elusive player who's had a very good season with the North Harbour side in New Zealand
00:19:53And one of the key men in their backline this afternoon he brings to the Western Samoan side some experience
00:20:03And the loose forward Sila Vaifali caught offside and Wales with the family a few meters inside their own half
00:20:13So
00:20:18It's a very big kick that it's a beautiful judge kick as well
00:20:22From the fullback Anthony Tennant, that's a 50 meter kick
00:20:30An opportunity for Wales
00:20:32To put some points on the board as close as they've been in the first
00:20:3521 minutes of this match to the Western Samoan line
00:20:43So
00:20:48Tap by Phil May
00:20:50The long pass to Mike Hall, but the defense is solid good tackle made by Vaenga the centre three-quarter for Western Samoa
00:20:57on Mike Hall
00:21:00Yeah, I think I think some are very unlucky that I thought they were going forward in that ball
00:21:05And they could quite deservedly have the put in
00:21:07I'm surprised the Wales got the chance here to put some points on the board
00:21:10They may go for a drop goal just to get points on the board and settle themselves down
00:21:15But uh, they're unlucky Samoa with the put in there
00:21:2922 minutes of the first half gone in this pull three match at Carter Farms Park
00:21:33between Western Samoa and Wales with the Samoans ahead by three points to nil and a very
00:21:39Intricate move that backfired there back of the Welshman just exactly what they were trying to do there. Goodness only knows
00:21:49But it looks like they may well in fact receive a penalty
00:21:55As the referees penalized the Samoans
00:21:57Breaking early Robert Jones has come up under the dummy run and a couple of Samoans players broke at the same time
00:22:03But the back row move went horribly wrong for Wales and they've been saved again by there
00:22:07You'll see blindside flanker, especially coming off there. And that's what the referee has penalized
00:22:11Went forward and otherwise they'd have had a chance to break out
00:22:15I think rather fortuitously Wales have got a chance to get back in the game and set themselves right down
00:22:25The kick in the amount of 15 meters at the most for Mark Green
00:22:37Yes
00:22:40And then he knows the ground well here at Carter Farms Park where he plays his club rugby for the Cardiff side
00:22:45Levels the scores after 22 minutes of play
00:22:50Wales we might really get back on equal terms again
00:22:53The longer it went on behind the more frustrated they would have got especially the crowd
00:22:57Um, Samoa are playing. Okay
00:22:58They're just going to keep back in the work get back in the Welsh half and i'm sure they'll get their chances
00:23:03One of the major problems about Wales has been the fact they give away far too many penalty kicks at goal
00:23:09And if Samoa can get a couple of those and who knows what might happen
00:23:13Phil Davies to the right and Phil May
00:23:16Waiting for Ailupo to restart play from halfway penalty apiece in the first quarter of the match
00:23:24Ailupo a very sweet kick of the board kicks deep
00:23:27Dejan Evans who I think probably hasn't touched the ball in the first 20 minutes of the match
00:23:31There he is the captain of the Welsh side today
00:23:34replacing
00:23:35Paul Thorburn
00:23:37Who has captain Wales through the last two or three rather depressing years Dejan Evans on the right wing for Wales today
00:23:44playing in his 25th test
00:23:52Bashop
00:23:54Pat Lamb with the little dummy up over the 22 waits for his boards to get him behind him
00:23:57This is good stuff from the Samoans driving hard at the Welsh line
00:24:02I just got the impression that Timo Tangala might have taken his eye off the ball there. He was waiting to receive that pass
00:24:08He had some room to move out on the left
00:24:11But just sizing up his options took his eye off the ball this big strapping 15 stone
00:24:17experienced winger on the left wing for Western Samoa today
00:24:23Western Samoa and forwards did extremely well taking play up over the advantage line and then winning good quick ball
00:24:28and
00:24:29Yeah, you can see Tangala just looking around to see where in fact the defense was and in doing so he lost it forward
00:24:44Robert Jones who
00:24:45Seems Jamie to have cemented his self back inside the Welsh team. Now that there's a new coach here. Absolutely, right
00:24:51The previous coach Warren Waldron was was very much of a fan of a man called Chris Bridges
00:24:56Robert Jones who did have a reputation as being one of the best halfbacks in the world four years ago at the last world cup
00:25:01But has had a chequered career since then but seems now to be back permanently in the Welsh team
00:25:06Again, the Samoans have been penalized
00:25:10Going over the top and killing the ball it was a Paulo Petalini
00:25:14the loose forward
00:25:17Steps out of one tackle but a very poor pass nearly pulled down by Tangala
00:25:21Nearly pulled down by Tangala
00:25:24And Wales on the break back there is the fullback
00:25:27Lupo he looked for a moment that he was going to make a mess of it
00:25:32But very calmly pulled it in again and recovered extremely well
00:25:43So no tries in the match so far nearly 30 minutes of the first half gone just one penalty apiece
00:25:52So
00:25:56Kenny Walters making his
00:25:58Test debut today just three days away from his 30th birthday as he feeds the line at one by Pat Lamb at the back of
00:26:03the line out after awful Welsh deflection
00:26:09And again
00:26:11The Samoans able to win ball from broken play
00:26:14And i'm sure Peter Schuster their coach and Brian Williams their technical advisor would be very pleased with the performance of the Samoan
00:26:20Pack in the first 30 minutes of this match
00:26:23certainly matching the Welsh
00:26:25And also winning perhaps a little more ball from the line outs than they might have thought
00:26:32Robert Jones
00:26:35Looking over the top but it's too much depth on that kick and Ayalupo has plenty of time to put his reply
00:26:41Long and deep Clement inside his own 22
00:26:50So
00:26:55Robert Jones who made his test debut back in 1986 has won 35 caps for Wales since then their most experienced player today
00:27:02There's their oldest player 35 year old Phil May playing today in just his seventh test
00:27:09So Western Samoa slightly ahead in the line out count that's a
00:27:13a pleasant surprise i'm sure
00:27:16For the Western Samoans who thought they might struggle in this phase of play
00:27:19With the lack of real tall men on their team
00:27:22But with that slight advantage in the line outs at the moment
00:27:25And again being able to put pressure on the Welsh line
00:27:38And a stoppage for injury one of the Welsh players it looks like has suffered a knock
00:27:45In fact, it looks like a Phil May
00:27:49Seems to be favoring his calf muscle, is it I think?
00:27:55He was certainly subjected to a very heavy tackle as he came around the back of the line out
00:27:59from the from the from the previous move
00:28:06Keep your eye number four Phil May who
00:28:10Was
00:28:11smashed in a very heavy tackle there by Apollo Peralini the Western Samoan loose forward
00:28:16And seemed to injure himself when he went down midway 22 and halfway
00:28:22It's a real veteran of Welsh rugby
00:28:24In fact, it doesn't look too good at all for Phil May who's waited three long years to win back his Welsh jersey
00:28:33A man who's been playing club rugby here in Wales for 18 years in a row
00:28:39So
00:28:44Meanwhile
00:28:46Replacement
00:28:48Looks like Martin Morris, I think that might be warming up and this doesn't look good at all for Phil May
00:28:56The stretcher out there he's obviously suffered a very heavy blow to his leg. He looks to be in some pain at the moment
00:29:01As
00:29:04The Yayan Evans and the referee Mr. Patrick Rabanne have a discussion
00:29:09over the back
00:29:10Of Phil May and he is being assisted from the ground
00:29:13So a very heavy tackle keep your eye on number seven the Western Samoan loose forward who lined up Phil May and
00:29:20It's probably the way he fell. I think that
00:29:23Caused the injury rather than the tackle itself
00:29:25So
00:29:30A very sad day for Phil May back in the Welsh side, but only for 30 minutes
00:29:35It looks like in fact, it's his left hand. That's the problem
00:29:50Coming onto the field is number 21 Martin Morris from the Neath club
00:29:56Of course
00:30:01And immediately into the fray as the Welsh
00:30:03Win the line out, but it'd be knocked forward by Wales. And so the scrum to take place midway 22 and halfway
00:30:13I notice that Phil Davis has gone in to lock the big number eight and there you see number 21 on the blind side
00:30:20Martin Morris, so there's been
00:30:22Quite a change in the formation of the Welsh scrum as a result of that injury
00:30:26with Davis going from number eight to lock
00:30:29and
00:30:30Also the back row being shifted around to accommodate Martin Morris on the blind side
00:30:36Phil Davis has played a number of tests at lock so it hasn't disrupted them too much
00:30:40But obviously not great news for them. And Emiya Lewis has gone from
00:30:44Side of the scrum to number eight as the Western Samoans again moving the ball quickly and snappily along the back line
00:30:52But the fullback Arlupe couldn't get his pass for a good smothering tackle made on him
00:30:55He had a man outside of him as things get a little heated there Frank Bunce in there
00:30:59mixing it with one of the Welshmen
00:31:06The referee just
00:31:08Calming the players down
00:31:10I think it was all fairly innocent stuff as Emiya Lewis and Frank Bunce had an exchange
00:31:15And
00:31:19The Welsh with the loose head inside their own half the very even match so far
00:31:26And Via have been penalized
00:31:34And another defensive penalty to Wales
00:31:36the fullback Anthony Clement
00:31:38We'll talk about the New Zealand connection in the Western Samoan side with most of them having played or still playing their domestic rugby in
00:31:44New Zealand, but Anthony Clement and Ritchie Collins are two members of the Welsh side that also played club rugby in New Zealand in Wellington
00:31:50Tony Clement who played club rugby for the Wanaki Club in Wellington and Ritchie Collins back in the mid-1980s played for the Johnsonville Club
00:31:57Collins on the side of the scrum wearing the number seven jersey. There he is at the back of the line out
00:32:01marking Apollo Pertolini
00:32:05Stephen Bashop his first mistake today as he was put under pressure there from Ritchie Collins
00:32:15So
00:32:25From the line out
00:32:27Nothing really much wrong with the pass
00:32:29The ball just seemed to slip through the hands of Stephen Bashop
00:32:32Perhaps he took his eye off the ball as it was coming at him
00:32:34He also was probably aware of the fact that the Ritchie Collins was coming at him like an express train
00:32:38And once again, the Samoans starting to give away a lot of penalties
00:32:42Going over the top says Mr. Rabban and another opportunity here for Mark Ring
00:32:50Weston Samoa have given away a lot of penalties
00:32:53I'm, not sure what exactly what the penalty count is, but it's certainly in Wales's favour
00:32:56And Weston Samoa have only got themselves to blame for being in this position
00:32:59They won a good line out and unfortunately that unenforced error on Bashop
00:33:04has put more pressure on them, but
00:33:06Mark Ring's under pressure here as well as his frontline goal kicker
00:33:10Goal kicking is going to win matches in this world. Captain Wales don't have a specialist
00:33:15Ring
00:33:16Doesn't waste much time with his kicks at goal
00:33:19But that's another miss to Wales three attempts at goal with only one success so far and the scores remain at three all
00:33:27So the Western Samoans will need to tighten their discipline particularly about staying on their feet once the ball goes to ground
00:33:32I know it's an area of play that they've worked long and hard on over the past few days here in Cardiff
00:33:38Peter Fadi Alofa, Brian Williams and Peter Schuster stressing the need to these players
00:33:42And keeping with if you like the philosophy of the referees of this world cup
00:33:45They're very strict and very tough
00:33:47On players that don't stay on their feet once the ball goes to ground and the Samoans have put a lot of emphasis on that
00:33:52In training, but nonetheless have given away
00:33:55A lot of penalties in the first 30 minutes of the match
00:33:57from that area
00:33:59So
00:34:06Part of this
00:34:07the crowd of 35 000 people here at the
00:34:10National Stadium at Cardiff Arms Park as the Welshman won another lineup
00:34:14But it's been a very even struggle in the lineup so far that pass would look well. That certainly was forward in fact
00:34:20I'm sure both of those last two passes were forward. Certainly. There was no question about the second one
00:34:25And
00:34:27The scrum to go down 10 meters inside the Welsh half
00:34:32Both teams showing a willingness to want to move the ball, but just a lack of finish perhaps it's
00:34:37nervousness
00:34:38These players have been sitting around waiting for the best part of 10 days for this match to take place and
00:34:42I know Peter Fadi Alofa said to me his players were getting very frustrated and very bored over the last couple of days
00:34:48Couldn't wait to get into this match and perhaps just being a little impetuous
00:34:51And coupled with the nervousness
00:34:53Accounting for a lot of the handling areas
00:34:58As away goes Brian Lima the youngest member of the Western Samoan side
00:35:02The 19 year old plays his rugby for the Maris St. Pat's team in Wellington
00:35:18The Welsh scurrying the scrum at Devia
00:35:21Getting away from Martin Morris from the restart it's Frank Bunce again on the crash midway 22 and halfway
00:35:28The Samoans on attack again and again, it's there for their backs, Bashop
00:35:32But there's a wall of Welsh jerseys there. Bunce no way through there for Frank Bunce as three Welshmen wrap him up
00:35:37just outside the 22 as in go the
00:35:40Samoan forwards again and then once more look at those Samoan players all lying all over the player who's been tackled
00:35:46And once again, they've been penalized
00:35:50So
00:35:58Lawrence Delaney the Welsh prop he certainly felt the full force of the racking on that occasion
00:36:02In fact, it might be Kenny Waters the new cap
00:36:05Certainly is but he was on the wrong side of the rack and deserved what he got there really and the referee was right
00:36:09On top of the incident and saw him clean the ball and has given Samoa an excellent chance to take the lead again
00:36:20So
00:36:24Matthew via with the one success so far
00:36:27But that was a very simple kick from no more than 15 or 20 meters. This is a longer kick out near the 40 meter range
00:36:36Well, we've very disappointed so far that their backs haven't showed
00:36:39Any great ability to beat the Samoans at a man-on-man situation or out wide the iron evidence that captain
00:36:45I don't think has received a pass yet
00:36:47In an attacking situation and certainly the route the move we just had before going right to left
00:36:52two long passes were definitely forward and
00:36:54Certainly misguided and even if they had been that good. I don't think they were
00:36:58in a position to make
00:37:00a lot of ground from it
00:37:04With a little western Samoan halfback Matthew via big kick for him
00:37:08Just a couple of minutes away from halftime a chance to put western Samoa back in the lead. He struck it well
00:37:14But again, the direction is astray so not a successful day for goal kicking here at Carter Farms Park today
00:37:23Each team with just the one success from three
00:37:34Mark ring gets the match underway again
00:37:37So
00:37:39Step back rather untidily by the Samoans with the Welsh forwards coming through
00:37:43As Arthur Emmer gets a rare touch of the ball on the left wing for Wales. He turned it around nicely Collins
00:37:49To Robert Jones who goes straight through a big gap in the Samoan forwards
00:37:58And again the Welsh forwards have been penalized number two Kenny Waters has given away another penalty
00:38:03He might be trying to get his own back from the previous ruck I think as well
00:38:11There he is this 29 year old making his test debut today
00:38:15Just being a little too over vigorous there as Robert Jones saw how flat the western Samoan backs were
00:38:21Sold the dummy took it back into the forwards
00:38:24And number two there he is
00:38:26Kenny Walters right under the nose of the referee. It's a needless stomping and he's been penalized
00:38:33Another opportunity here for Western Samoa again winning that ball quickly the Welsh backs. However up very flat crowding the Western Samoans
00:38:42so there's been some very solid defense from the Welsh midfield this afternoon who've closed down the
00:38:47Elusive Western Samoan midfield
00:38:51Good referee the high up and under definitely went forward from Clement and he's come back for the scrum ball Samoans way
00:38:58there's a big blind here for the Western Samoans and that's
00:39:02Where a Porro Perolini is going, where is the support?
00:39:05Yes, it's there in the form of by Farley, but he can't get there
00:39:08Very good tackle made by Amir Lewis strong tackle made on the Western Samoan moves forward
00:39:17That was certainly a try saving tackle from the big
00:39:20Number eight as he is now for the Welsh side this afternoon
00:39:24Try saving tackle but the Western Samoans in the last couple of minutes of the first half
00:39:29Kept right on the Welsh goal line marvellous opportunity here to snatch the lead before the break
00:39:39Walters
00:39:41Good take in the middle of the line out by Mosley and Peter Fadi Alofa it is that's been penalized
00:39:51Amir Lewis may just have saved Wales from enormous embarrassment here. It was a super move by Western Samoa
00:39:57That lamb off the back a huge gap there. Martin Morris has gone wide very early
00:40:01And there's Amir Lewis with a wonderful tackle drags him right across and into touch
00:40:08Cecilia by Farley who could see the line he was so close
00:40:11He was in the act of rolling in the tackle and I think he thought he had enough momentum on to be able to get
00:40:16The ball down but the sheer strength of that man
00:40:18There the Welshman the back of the line out Amir Lewis managed to turn the Samoan over and push him into touch
00:40:25A marvellous tackle score remains at three points apiece
00:40:51At the back of the scrum goes
00:40:54Pat Lamb as it's moved wide again nicely taken there by Frank Funtz
00:40:57But another very solid tackle made on him by Mark Ring
00:41:00There's certainly been nothing wrong with the Welsh defence this afternoon. It certainly made sure of their tackles
00:41:11And the Welsh get the loose head
00:41:14Both of these two teams know i'm sure after watching the australia argentinian match the other day that they're in a very tight group
00:41:20and it's
00:41:21Going to be a very tight match by the look of it
00:41:23Meanwhile, the french touch judge Rene Auquet has got his flag up. He's obviously seen a knee go up by the look of it
00:41:33And I think he's going to talk to one of the Samoan players so there'll be a penalty here to the Welsh
00:41:41And it's their captain Peter Fariolopo that's been spoken to
00:41:44Fariolopo
00:41:50Fariolopo has been penalised and Wales get the penalty just outside their 22
00:42:01Tony Clement their fullback
00:42:05Good kick from Clement from the middle of the field
00:42:10Making sure of his touch but also making good yardage
00:42:14so
00:42:19So the Welsh crowd trying to gee their side galvanise them into action in the last couple of minutes of the first half
00:42:31A nice take by Vaithali at the back of the line out his away comes Vili Alalatua
00:42:38Vaithali again trying to turn it back to his halfback. It's there for Viap
00:42:45Frank Bunce decides to have a little probe on the short side. Frank Bunce pushes off Robert Jones. Did he lose it forward?
00:42:51I think he might have done
00:42:52However, no the referee is saying it the ball bounced back
00:42:58This is a good
00:42:59Passage of play here for the Samoans putting together two or three phases and they controlling it again as they start the rolling wall
00:43:08Now released for Favia, this is Tangalawa coming in from the left wing
00:43:12That looked like a suspiciously high tackle on Tangalawa
00:43:15however
00:43:15The ball has been lost and won by the Welshman coming up from fullback as Clement's solid tackle made him
00:43:20And then Yeyenevans with his first chance of the match doesn't get away from Frank Bunce. He looked very menacing. Nonetheless did Yeyenevans
00:43:29As the referee looks at his watch and says that is half time. Yeyenevans taking the pass from his fullback
00:43:37Given some room to move on down the right wing, but a very solid tackle by Frank Bunce
00:43:42Beautiful copybook tackle and that's half time here at Cardiff Arms Park. Cardiff Arms Park should I say. The scores are level at three points apiece
00:43:56Samoans kick deep. Nicely taken by Robert Jones 10 meters from his own line
00:44:06It's a rather familiar situation, I'm sure that Jones finds himself in here this afternoon. As away come the Samoans again
00:44:12A nice run here from the number eight Pat Lamb and a lovely pass to a Bainga that chases on
00:44:17Now it's Bainga against a couple of forwards. Bainga, what does he say? Yes, that's a try in the first minute to the Samoans
00:44:24Lovely kick from Tu Bainga. He had the pace to outstretch the Welsh defence. He got a hand to the ball and the Western Samoans
00:44:32hit the lead by seven points to three
00:44:45A sensational start to the second half from the first light out
00:44:49A smart break here made by Pat Lamb. Fended off one beautiful pass that he freed to Tu Bainga
00:44:55Decided to go on his own. A very intelligent little kick. He started from behind but he had
00:45:00too much pace for the halfback and the loose forward and did he get a hand to it or not?
00:45:05It's a very close call. It's an incredibly close call and Robert Jones certainly reacted very badly
00:45:11to the decision made by Patrick Robin. I thought Jones just got there. Terribly difficult decision
00:45:16for the referee as they go neck for neck, stride for stride for the try line. Robert Jones drives
00:45:21first and I'm afraid that's Robert Jones's hand on the ground and Patrick Robin has not given the
00:45:26benefit of the doubt the defending side which he must do in any situation regarding a try
00:45:31and I'm afraid things like that can turn matches and Patrick Robin has given the Western Samoa
00:45:36a big advantage now and this kick is critical for Western Samoa to make it a six point lead
00:45:42Just the sort of bad break the Welsh didn't want in the first minute of the second half
00:45:47but it's changed the whole nature of this match as Matthew Bainga, the halfback, adds the extra
00:45:53two points and the Samoans are ahead by nine points to three and boy have we got a real match
00:45:59on our hands here at the National Stadium. A real test now of the Welsh spirit. How much fire is
00:46:05left in the Welsh dragon now? 38 minutes of the match to go. A controversial try. One that I'm
00:46:11sure we'll hear and read a lot about in the next few days especially if it in fact determines the
00:46:16outcome of this match. It may well determine the outcome of Welsh rugby for the next four years
00:46:23As Mark Ring restarts and away come the Samoans again. This is Mata'afa Kenan
00:46:31beautifully taken by Fadi Alofa and the Western Samoans are really fired up. They know they've
00:46:38got the winning of this match and again the Welsh have been penalised and another opportunity here
00:46:45for Western Samoa. You've got to question the Welsh decision making there. They elected for
00:46:50a short kick-off which put the confrontation back in the forwards again. It may have been
00:46:55better for them to go long and try and settle it down and have Western Samoa clear the ball
00:46:59just beyond the 22 so Wales could have thrown. It was a poor decision I feel to kick short on that
00:47:05occasion and certainly now if they were to go 12-3 down it would be very difficult for them.
00:47:11I know to my own cost what disputed tries are like in World Cup when England played Australia
00:47:15in the 87 World Cup. David Campisi did the same to England in the opening game of that group
00:47:21and certainly it made things very very difficult for the England guys the rest of that game
00:47:25knowing full well that the try was not actually a definitive try.
00:47:28But this is a bold kick from this angle now but what a silence there will be if it goes over.
00:47:40That's the 10 meter line so it's a very long kick. These are the difficult ones
00:47:45with the plastic ball being able to maintain the direction for the duration of its flight.
00:47:53And he's hooked it away to the left. It's also short as Martin Morris claims the fair
00:48:01catch a few meters from his own line. I'm not sure what his punting's like. He's right in the
00:48:04middle of the field so eventually if he finds touch from here he might tap and pass. I think
00:48:08I think he's decided to do that and allow Mark Ring with the safer insurer boot to find his touch.
00:48:15Which he's done so. Coaches won't be too happy leaving a flanker to catch the high ball either.
00:48:21There's no way he should be taking it. The Samoans who seem to be keen to play this match
00:48:25at pace in the second half wasting no time taking the short line out but not to the satisfaction
00:48:30of Mr Rabban. He's indicating that it wasn't straight. He does have a microphone on but
00:48:36it's neither Jamie Salmon nor I exactly what you'd call fluent in French. He's not much
00:48:41used to us today.
00:48:54But he'll offer having something to say to his opposite number Lawrence Delaney.
00:49:02It's there for Robert Jones just outside his 22.
00:49:05A long pass back to Mark Ring as Pat Lamb gives chase.
00:49:11The Wales have lost yardage from that scrum by doing a long pass back to Mark Ring.
00:49:15His kick was sliced. There was good pressure on him and they've lost ground and it's Western Samoa's throw again.
00:49:26A big stand to a Malaita. Another one with a lot of experience and played as rugby in New Zealand for
00:49:32the Maris St Pat's Club in Wellington and a very good kick from Stephen Baship and it's pulled down by
00:49:39Tima Tangaloa. In there goes Frank Bunce. In the Samoan forwards get in behind Bunce and they turn it back for Vaya.
00:49:45Another opportunity here for Western Samoa back to Tangaloa but the Welshmen are watching the big
00:49:49strapping right winger for Western Samoa this afternoon. Three men there on Tangaloa as he got
00:49:54the ball but they turn it back again. Baship and for the third time it's Tangaloa. Frank Bunce gets in there
00:50:02as well. Real commitment coming here from the Western Samoans. Lovely pass across to the centre
00:50:07three-quarter. Vaenga is looking for some support but there's no one there. Four Welshmen there.
00:50:12The Samoans are right there now, right on the Welsh goal line.
00:50:18And the momentum really with this Western Samoan side in the first 10 minutes of the second half
00:50:23playing a notch or two better than they did throughout the first half. One more score from
00:50:28Western Samoa and that will be it I think. I don't think the Welsh will come back
00:50:32to a 10 point, 15 point deficit and Western Samoa in a marvellous position now with their own foot
00:50:38into the scrum. They've got to take their time. This looks like a further blow to the Welshmen.
00:50:43Is this the full back or is it in fact Tony Clement that's leaving the field? So everything
00:50:48going wrong for the Welsh team at the moment. So that's the second injury problem that the
00:50:57Welshmen have had this afternoon. Losing Phil May in the first spell after about 25 minutes
00:51:02and also it looks as if Mark Ring has received some attention on the ground as well. Because
00:51:09on comes number 18 Michael Rayer, the 26 year old from Cardiff. It was in fact a specialist full
00:51:17back so that's some consolation for the Welsh side. They don't have to re-change their back
00:51:21line as coming in from the left wing is Brian Leamer and that must have been very close.
00:51:29But a Welsh body managed to get onto the turf and prevent the Samoan player from grounding the ball.
00:51:38It's Tima Tangalawa again playing an increasingly prominent part in this match. He hardly saw the
00:51:42ball in the first half coming in off his wing as he bowled Richie Collins out of the way and look
00:51:47at the Welshman. They put three or four men underneath him as he got to the try line. So the
00:51:52Western Samoans have had two or three opportunities to score tries. The one they did score was
00:51:57controversial. And another opportunity here for the Western Samoan side. Is this going to be the
00:52:07first major upset of the 1991 World Cup? It's the new man on the field Michael Rayer. I think Mark
00:52:15Ring's in trouble too with his knee. I think it's the same knee as he had the recent operation on.
00:52:19But if he has to go off the force and they've got David Evans who's his kind of colleague but he's
00:52:23also a fly half that could come on. But these are worrying times for Wales. And again we see this
00:52:30move which is a well-practiced one of course in New Zealand. We often see John Kirwan with the
00:52:34All Blacks doing the same move and for Auckland coming it off his wing and using his tremendous
00:52:38strength. And who was it? I think it was Amir Lewis again who managed to get onto the turf
00:52:44and the Welshman taking Tangala over the top and unable to in fact ground the ball. So that's two
00:52:51very good saves by Amir Lewis. Untidy ball this time and the scrum being screwed more than 90
00:52:58degrees and so back we come again. Western Samoa are under pressure in these scrummages and they've
00:53:02just got to get Channel One ball I believe. They're getting pushed back now. It's a slightly
00:53:08bit of scrum off the back goes Pat Lamb as he frees it to Stephen Bashop. And I think a Welsh
00:53:15hand might have got to that ball. Bashop normally pretty reliable. I'm sure he would have backed
00:53:19himself to have slotted that drop goal nine times out of ten. Richie Collins the open side flank for
00:53:25Wales is now in trouble as well and Western Samoa have somehow just got to stay down this end of
00:53:30the field because they may get another penalty and if they can get beyond six points Wales have
00:53:34got to score twice and that will prove to be very difficult. Ten minutes of play in the second half
00:53:40and as this Richie Collins leaving the field as well he looks in a lot of pain with his right
00:53:45shoulder causing him trouble and so a third Welshman heads for the dressing room. Well with
00:53:50Martin Morris having already come on who's a loose loose forward he leaves the hooker and props only
00:53:55on the bench. The major problems here for the Welsh as the replacement fullback waiting underneath
00:54:01that Michael Raya. Bunt's got there as well I think he might have lost the ball forward however
00:54:05play continues and this is big. Mata Rapa Kenan only a couple of meters short of the line
00:54:09as again the Samoans go hunting for another try. Bashop, Peter Fadi Alofa
00:54:18turn back again for Vaya. Desperate stuff here from the Welshman trying to keep the Western Samoans
00:54:23out. Mark Burtwhistle. Players diving in all directions but Vaya again trying to move it out.
00:54:30Stephen Bashop. This match is really being played at a very frantic pace at the moment
00:54:46and this is a very torrid forward exchange now between these two teams. A lot at stake here
00:54:53as the Welshman decide to run it from inside their own 22 Arthur Emire
00:54:57the left winger that's a very poor kick. Tangalawa he's got a bit of room here as Timo
00:55:02gets away from a couple of Welshmen. Solid tackle made on him by Richie Collins
00:55:07as they move it wide again there's numbers here for the Samoans. Must be a try yes no question
00:55:12about this one. Selah Vae Fali and is that the end of the Welshman at the World Cup? It may well be
00:55:19two tries in the first 10 minutes of the second half and the Western Samoans suddenly with a very
00:55:28comfortable 10-point lead. Well it all stemmed from a very poor kick by Emire the right winger
00:55:39and in fact we're going back a little further than that as the numbers suddenly started to
00:55:43open up there for the Western Samoans. Look they had four on one any one of them could have scored
00:55:47it and it was the loose forward Selah Vae Fali that dotted it around just a few meters to the
00:55:53right of the post. It was such a long passage of play that there were bodies all over the place by
00:55:59the time Tangalawa went through the middle and and finally got tackled and there was such an
00:56:04enormous amount of gap on the right hand side as we can see there's four five six Western Samoans
00:56:09lining up to take the ball only Robert Jones in the frame there as a possible possible tackler
00:56:15and this really is now the writing on the wall for Wales but to be fair to Western Samoa I think
00:56:20we said at half time the first 10 minutes of the second half would be absolutely critical
00:56:24and Wales have been the sorry Western Samoa have only been the only side in the game at all.
00:56:31What a marvellous moment for Selah Vae Fali 24 year old from the Tarradale club in the Hawke's
00:56:38Bay playing today in his eighth test match for Western Samoa but now they're half back
00:56:45Matthew Byer with the chance to add the two extra points. Not having a very successful day with this
00:56:53goal kicking but at the moment the Samoans are winning this matches with tries. Let's have a
00:56:57look at this super try again as there was a huge lineup here Peter Farialofa lovely little pass to
00:57:04Vae Fali showed a good turn of speed got away from Robert Jones and it was just a mere formality
00:57:10from that moment on and look at the delight on the faces of the Western Samoans a critical try
00:57:15coming at a critical moment. Stephen Bashop just the man the Western Samoans need at the moment
00:57:27with his experience. Garen Jenkins is the third new player on the field for the Welsh side they
00:57:34can't make any more replacements. A makeshift Welsh side trailing by 10 points in their first
00:57:44World Cup match for 1991. Now there's an opportunity for the Welsh backs Paul who's hardly seen the
00:57:51ball all day Scott Gibbs who's also really just been a bystander for much of the action this
00:57:56afternoon but a very solid tackle made on him by the Western Samoan midfield gathered in by the
00:58:03Welsh forwards and they turn it back again for Jones probing down the short side but Mike Hall
00:58:10his hands letting him down. I think with Wales being 10 points behind it's going to make a
00:58:16fascinating last 25-30 minutes of the match because they've got to run it now and the point
00:58:22we must stress here Jamie is they do have backs that can score tries and Scott Gibbs, Ye and Evans
00:58:31even during their rather ill-fated five nations championship series this year
00:58:35where they finished with the wooden spoon they still did produce
00:58:38one or two marvellous tries in the course of that series
00:58:43Stephen Bashop. Samoa have obviously got to keep their cool do nothing rash
00:58:48just keep playing exactly the way they've done before move it to the midfield
00:58:51Bunce is having a super game up the middle Bashop's controlling things well his
00:58:55touch kicks have been good and that's what they've got to ensure
00:59:01and that's a telling statistic as well the Western Samoans winning the position count by
00:59:06two to one at the moment and the Welsh backs starved a position a poor pass ring but the Samoans
00:59:15putting pressure on the Welsh midfield and this is Ye and Evans the captain who's trying to start
00:59:20something up from the back Jones Scott Gibbs Stephen Bashop makes his tackle outside the 22
00:59:39and certainly that string of penalties in the first half for players not staying on their feet
00:59:44has done the trick but at the moment temp is starting to get a little frayed as one of the
00:59:48Welshmen and one of the Western Samoans exchanging blows it was uh I think Mata Apakinin
00:59:55the Western Samoan and one of the replacement Welsh forwards on the field
01:00:02the new man Garen Jenkins who's come on there he is number 19 he hasn't wasted much time in
01:00:07getting into the rough stuff as it was Mata Apakinin that
01:00:11took exception first of all as he threw a punch and then it was all on
01:00:14there he is number 19 Garen Jenkins has replaced Richie Collins on the blind side
01:00:21three replacements on the field for Wales as Mac Ring with the little
01:00:27dummy gets away from via Ye and Evans steps around Tangaloa
01:00:38Wales aren't threatening to really go anywhere with the back moves at the moment
01:00:42they don't want to get too frantic they needed a penalty to get back in the game 13-6
01:00:47or something like that they're just gonna somehow just get some momentum going and
01:00:52some continuity to their play 15 minutes of the second half have gone here at Cardiff Arms Park
01:01:04and the home side trailing by 13 points to three
01:01:12Stephen Bashop again so cool calm and collected
01:01:22it's doing well because the ball he's getting from the scrums isn't great ball
01:01:25they're being split a lot now Western Samoans
01:01:30the Welsh taking the short throw but I don't think it traveled five meters
01:01:33and
01:01:39the referee has awarded the loose head to the Western Samoans right on halfway
01:01:45almost an eerie silence here at the national stadium now is this Welsh crowd I think
01:01:50prepare themselves for yet another humiliation
01:01:55Stephen Bashop again with a beautifully placed kick and lovely pressure
01:01:59put on the replacement fullback but I think they might have been up inside or up ahead of the
01:02:04kicker Stephen Bashop and the Welsh have the option and they decide to take the scrum this
01:02:11is one area as Jamie Salmon said where the Welsh are able to impose their authority on the match
01:02:17and a very good attacking opportunity here with a big blind to work if they want it
01:02:21Jones kicking in behind the Western Samoan backs and rolling the ball into touch inside the 22
01:02:31Yian Evans giving chase
01:02:41but really the Welsh have barely been inside the Western Samoan 22 since the second half began
01:02:49it's been all Western Samoa since the break two tries since halftime they lead by 13 points to three
01:03:00and there's Fumai the saddest sight at Carter Farms Park today his long-awaited return to the
01:03:06Welsh side lasted just 30 minutes and looks like he's suffered a fairly serious injury to his arm
01:03:12and probably would I wouldn't imagine would take much further part in this World Cup
01:03:19hasn't found touch nicely kept in the field of play by Robert Jones but that really was
01:03:23almost a hospital pass back to his fullback Mark Ring is there to save the day and well
01:03:29taken there by the big prop forward Alalatoa showing good ball skills to the rolling ball
01:03:34he took well nicely picked up by by Vaienga across to Brian Lee but the youngster on the right wing
01:03:40that's had little to do this afternoon keeps the ball in the field of play but eventually it rolls
01:03:44into touch just 19 years of age Brian Lima playing on the right wing for Western Samoa this afternoon
01:03:57there's three all at halftime two tries
01:04:00and a conversion since the break to Western Samoa and they lead by 13 to three
01:04:08a line out infringement by Western Samoa free kick to the Welshman
01:04:14Davis
01:04:21again Frank Bunce very solid defender took the big Welsh forward in a solid tackle
01:04:29Ring and really there is just no fluency at all in this Welsh back line
01:04:34one starts to see the first signs of panic coming here absolutely now we've got to remember that
01:04:38Iain Evans is the supposed captain of Wales which which with his position caused a lot
01:04:43of comment when it was announced and the ball is now in Robert Jones's court I feel at scrum half
01:04:47to take this game by the scruff of the neck on Wales's behalf because Iain Evans does not seem
01:04:52to be making the decisions or going up to Robert Jones or Phil Davis the senior pros if you like
01:04:57at the side and Mark Ring who threw out a terribly wild pass there and to get it sorted out
01:05:02that's always the problem of course when you have a wing as captain he's really away from the
01:05:07boiler room as it were and often difficult to convey exactly what you want when you're 30 or
01:05:1340 meters away from the ball all the time Western Samoa can now play this game at as slow as pace
01:05:18as they like not rush the penalties not rush get into the scrums and just use up the time
01:05:23and the more panic will get into the Welsh camp
01:05:25an unobtrusive sort of player Stephen Bashop but his solidity and his maturity today has been very evident in this Western Samoan effort
01:05:48line out ball one by Kevin Mosley the Western Samoans have been penalized in the line out
01:05:52and a defensive penalty to the Welsh team on the 22
01:06:05Mark Ring finds his touch and brings the Welshman back on attack again
01:06:09time starting to tick by we've had approximately 22 minutes of play in the second half
01:06:16this is the sombre faces of the vast Welsh crowd
01:06:19not to mention the odd sombrero who I see there as well
01:06:26it's the referee Mr Raban having words with the Mara Awhakinen
01:06:31Martin Morris the replacement moves forward at the back of the line out for Wales
01:06:35marking Aparo Peralini
01:06:40stand to Amalaitai throwing the ball deep ball one by the Western Samoans good line out to win
01:06:46inside their own half opportunity for them to get back into the Welsh half here
01:06:50fire to Frank Bunce and a rare mistake from Bunce this gives Wales the opportunity Lewis outside the
01:06:5722 Lewis as he runs into Paddy Alopa great run there from Emil Lewis Jones Mark Ring he's deciding
01:07:07he'll hit the Samoans on on his own but again no nothing really constructive coming from the
01:07:13Welsh banks here they just really seem to be a group of individuals working at the moment
01:07:19Kevin Mosley solid tackle made on him 50 meters short of the line
01:07:23Mosley still on the ground another opportunity at this time for Mike Hall
01:07:27inside to Lewis and yes the Welshman are back Arthur Emmer that was that took the final pass
01:07:36and it all looked a bit loose but it was the decisive little break by Mike Hall and Arthur
01:07:42Emmer coming back on the angle and the defence opened up and the Welshman are back in the match
01:07:47at 13 points to seven he's hardly touched the ball all day
01:07:56it really had become rather loose and ragged the Western Samoans were spread wide
01:08:02spread rather thinly out to the right that's where the Welshman decided to probe
01:08:06Mike Hall the centre had the little break and the gap opened up there for Arthur Emmer
01:08:10and he showed good footwork to zigzag his way through the defence
01:08:14and the opportunity here for Ring to add the two points big kick for Ring
01:08:19two desperate points that the Welshman needed and hits all on again at 13 points to nine
01:08:24the Welshman are not out of it yet
01:08:28indeed not as you rightly say and for our Frank Bunches that was a bucking game in midfield
01:08:32for Western Samoa it was his knock on that really led to the whole whole world strike
01:08:37and Emiya Lewis who's having a wonderful game I think for Wales in the back row
01:08:41has really set up the pattern there for Wales to get their first strike
01:08:44very terrific for a cracking last quarter of this game now and with only four points in it
01:08:49it can still go either way and Western Samoa have got to keep control of themselves now
01:08:53and play the game of the Welsh half Wales have got to score the tries Western Samoa only needs
01:08:59kicks so the ball is still very much in Western Samoa's court here is Emiya just finishing off
01:09:04the try again and Wales has waited a long time for that both on and off the field
01:09:14and this vast Welsh crowd which has been rather quiet this afternoon
01:09:18suddenly breaks out of the song as they sense the Welshman may be able to snatch victory in
01:09:23this match after all lovely cut back there from Arthur Emiya coming back on the angle
01:09:29and the gap opened in the Western Samoan defence and through he went to score
01:09:33the first Welsh try of the World Cup in 1991
01:09:43the Welsh haven't fashioned an especially proud record here at Carter Farms Park over the past
01:09:48couple of years only winning two of their last 12 internationals here on their home ground
01:09:57the Samoans concerned about their inability to win ball in the
01:10:01lineups showing a little innovation and creativity here and that's one they have won
01:10:08and robbed of the ball as well as it comes back to mark ring inside is 22
01:10:18Wales were immensely fortunate that Lawrence Delaney went straight over the top of the Samoan
01:10:22Mall and when it was coming out their side and Wales are terribly fortunate to get away with that
01:10:28it's a play back on halfway
01:10:3125 minutes of the first half of the second half gone it's 13 points to nine in favour of Samir
01:10:39it's two lineouts in a row that the Samoans have won that'll give them some heart
01:10:43Mr Rabban thinking about a penalty this time he
01:10:47pulls up the Welshman for killing the ball it's the replacement number 19 Geddon Jenkins
01:10:52that land
01:10:59via quick hands to Frank Buntz, Buntz beautifully short one tackle
01:11:04lovely stuff here from Buntz where's the support from Bainga, Bashop but the pass was forward
01:11:13the gap was there the try was there for the asking for the Samoans
01:11:17but the forward pass has let them down
01:11:23Ring the long pass he had Yeh and Evans outside of him to pull back but he decided to kick
01:11:39very good kick from the replacement fullback Michael Raya
01:11:45resisted the temptation to give Yeh and Evans a run
01:11:49his captain and ring outside of him who was unmarked
01:11:51I guess he felled inside his own 22 the wise option was to kick
01:11:56so
01:12:11untidy ball it's the big western Samoa hooker staying two on the liners quick to pounce on
01:12:18it
01:12:27and Matthew Byer who's had a very fine game at halfback for western Samoa again
01:12:31clearing the ball quickly and cleanly to his inside backs Tangala the strength of Tangala
01:12:36shrugs off one Welshman and Robert Jones who has a awfully difficult job to get him down
01:12:41and he's appealing to the referee I think there for a penalty claiming Tangala
01:12:45deliberately pushed the ball into touch
01:12:49in fact silly play silly play I mean they had the advantages there in the
01:12:53worlds when he took nearly told to
01:12:57ring trying to chip the ball just in behind the western Samoan backs to
01:13:01Bainga another one of these elusive midfielders in the western Samoan side this afternoon
01:13:05Bainga and Frank Pence have had marvellous games and caused a lot of problems for the
01:13:09Welsh defence especially in the second half and the Samoans losing the ball forward
01:13:15in that exchange in this match which is being played at an increasingly frantic pace
01:13:20and I just wonder about the fitness of this Welsh pack in the last 20 minutes Jamie
01:13:23absolutely critical and obviously the same is going to be said of Samoa as well but
01:13:27they haven't been renowned for their fitness over the last year or two Wales that's for sure
01:13:35ring
01:13:38lovely kick from Mark Ring he does in fact remind me of Phil Bennett sometimes the way he moves with
01:13:44that lovely little jinky run that he's got in a very balanced position he holds on the field and
01:13:50that lovely kicked in that he just weighed up his options kicked the ball deep and rolled it into
01:13:54touch inside the 22. Yes when you think of the experience of Robert Jones at scrum half and
01:13:58Mark Ring at fly half that's where the control of this game should be won for Wales and their
01:14:02decision making should in fact with 10 minutes to go even though they're four points down
01:14:07should secure enough possession and enough quality decision making to get them on the
01:14:11scoring chart again
01:14:18what's being penalized in the lineup and that's a timely penalty the Samoans would say coming
01:14:25just a few meters from their own line and Stephen Basham
01:14:32Samoans still well ahead in the position count
01:14:34but very little of that is coming from the lineups
01:14:39and that's a lovely kick from Stephen Basham at the Welsh take the quick throw in
01:14:44there's the pick of the Welsh forwards this afternoon ML Lewis with another charging run
01:14:49stopped by Vaifali 10 meters outside the 22 and Vaifali has been penalized for a head-high
01:14:57tackle and an opportunity here for Wales now this is a long kick it's up near the halfway and Robert
01:15:02Jones realizing that he doesn't have the goal kickers that could realistically slot this
01:15:07so they take the tap penalty Scott Gibbs breaks out of one tackle
01:15:16Jones with a beautiful long pass to Hall again Hall on the little half break
01:15:20desperate stuff here as Pat Lamb goes back buying it
01:15:24as he kicks the ball deep inside the Welsh half
01:15:37the ball going into touch on the pool
01:15:40I think the referee should have come back from the Welsh knock on and given Samoa the scrum
01:15:46Kevin Moseley going high but to Robert Jones under pressure and the Welsh winning the lineup
01:15:53losing 20 meters time ticks by 32 minutes of play have gone although we have had a couple
01:16:02of long stoppages for injuries so they'd still be the best part of 10 minutes of the match to go
01:16:11Can this Western Samoan side in their very first taste of World Cup rugby
01:16:15hang on and pull off the biggest upset so far of the 1991 World Cup Matthew Byer kicking deep
01:16:21Raya 10 meters from his own line and the Welsh of course are forced to run the ball
01:16:26Raya and again the Western Samoan defense looking rather thinly spread
01:16:31as the Welsh make 30 meters up towards halfway it's there for Jones again
01:16:38the try score Arthur Emair again the gap opens up for the Welsh Mark Ring
01:16:43up to the 22 desperate defense here from the Samoans
01:16:52Jones he goes one way then the other ring
01:16:58and again the try was on for the Welsh at the hands of young Scott Gibbs letting him down
01:17:06Martin Ring looked very reluctant to go for that gap there he was not moving at pace at all and
01:17:11here we go look he's just jogging there there's a gap there for him
01:17:14and made things hard for Scott Gibbs and went outside that was a glorious chance for Wales
01:17:22as you say rightly say Brendan I mean the fitness now is going to tell on these two sides and
01:17:26I don't know which one's going to hold out the most but what's this a marvelous effort
01:17:31in this game they're going to somehow get quick ball from the scrum and clear their lines
01:17:35and some of the Western Samoan players also starting to look a little bit out of breath
01:17:42in the last 10 minutes of this match some big holes starting to appear in the Western Samoan defense
01:17:5413 points denied it was three all at half time three tries in the second half two to
01:17:59Western Samoa one to Wales and four points the difference as we go into the last 10
01:18:04minutes of this cliffhanger here at the National Stadium
01:18:13it's Dan Tuamalaitai having difficulty getting down inside his own 22
01:18:18Western Samoan scrum has been under a lot of pressure in the second half that's
01:18:21a steadier scrum giving Bashop plenty of time to get his kick away and relieving the pressure
01:18:26for Western Samoa as they make play down to within 10 meters of the Welsh halfway of the halfway line
01:18:31I must say that Emiar Lewis for Wales in the back row has been quite outstanding today he's been
01:18:35anyone that's really driven his forwards in a forward manner and really taken the Samoans on
01:18:40to their own game
01:18:44Vaithali Bashop does well to pull it down out of the sky and rolls it inside the Welsh 22 Michael
01:18:52Rea the replacement fullback for Anthony Clement gets his kick away that will suit the purposes of
01:19:00the Western Samoans admirably keeping the Welsh inside their own heart he's a good player Michael
01:19:05Rea it was a close decision between him and Tony Clement who got the 15 jersey for Wales
01:19:09he plays all his rugby at fullback for Cardiff and he's an attacking player as well so he'll
01:19:14be joining the line as and when Wales gets in possession of it Arthur Keenan marking Phil
01:19:21Davis in the two-man line out Mark Burt was there as well but it's taken by Kevin Moseley
01:19:26but a solid tackle lovely tackle made by Tangaloa stopped the big Welsh lock in his tracks ring
01:19:34this is Mike Hall couldn't get his pass away scooped up there by Vaithali away goes Pat Lamb
01:19:41lovely hands across to Brian Lemar shrugs off one tackle Lemar where's the support for Lemar
01:19:46he's only 10 meters short of the line and the teenager from Western Samoa refusing to be
01:19:51tackled dragging Welshman towards the line they're only 10 meters short must be a penalty
01:19:56the Welshman diving in all over the player on the ground and a very decisive penalty awarded by
01:20:02Patrick Rabanne to Western Samoa just 10 meters from the line and Matthew Byer must kick the goal
01:20:10no question that was a penalty if it had been two two yards closer to the Welsh line it would
01:20:14have been a penalty try but a super run on the right wing by Brian Lemar took them on and if
01:20:20he could just got one pass away there then Western Samoa definitely in but certainly the hands are
01:20:25all on the on the ball now to prevent it coming out for Western Samoa look the Welsh hand you can
01:20:29see quite clearly there I can't quite see who it is but uh if it'd been a yard closer to the
01:20:34Welsh line it would have been a penalty try without any question
01:20:39this now becomes a critical kick because it would take obviously Samoa up to a seven point lead
01:20:43which means the Welsh has finished for twice and with it a try as well to get back in the game
01:20:49lovely work there by Pat Lamb and Stephen Basher for those quick hands freeing up Brian Lemar look
01:20:54at the strength of this youngster as he took two or three Welshmen with him first of all he brushed
01:20:58aside his opposite number and it took three of them before they could nail him to the ground
01:21:02then in went the Welsh forwards killing the ball Mara Afakin and also lucky that perhaps he wasn't
01:21:07penalized but the first offence came from the Welshman and so now Matthew Byer the most important
01:21:15kick of his career Samoa have got to be careful as well because I think if Mark Ring catches this
01:21:21one and it misses he'll run it out from the fence five meters in from touch 25 meter kick this
01:21:28tonight gets 16 points to nine that is a superb kick from the little Western Samoan halfback
01:21:37with just eight minutes of play remaining he hasn't really been in the best of goal
01:21:41kicking form today but that was absolutely perfect coming at just at the right moment
01:21:46for Western Samoa and now the Welshman have to score twice as the Western Samoan fans in
01:21:51the crowd here showing their delight at that kick from Matthew Byer
01:21:57and suddenly there is an eerie silence here at Cardiff Arms Park
01:22:05as it may well need the individual brilliance of someone like Mark Ring to spark this Welsh team
01:22:10into action are they good enough to score two tries in the last 10 minutes
01:22:13Robert Jones putting a little kick ahead and Lima Alex to allow it to bounce
01:22:21that could have gone anywhere there were three or four Welshmen following up that kick from the
01:22:26kickoff it was a dreadful carrying kick by Tangela I mean it went right in the middle of the field
01:22:31I could have sworn he was going for touch so the Welsh sweep inside the Western Samoa 22
01:22:38Byer gets his kick away what a splendid game he's had at halfback today
01:22:50yes he's awfully done terribly well seeing he's the second choice goal kicker he didn't start
01:22:54off the game as golki but he and Pat Lamb I think about outstanding games for Western Samoa
01:22:59it's Pat Lamb at number six in the lineup what a marvellous season it's been for him
01:23:03captain of the champion Marist side of the Auckland club competition
01:23:07also played for the Auckland representative side against Western Samoa this year
01:23:10Ayalupa who's hardly touched the ball in the second half but his first
01:23:13attempt sees the ball go loose chance here for the Welshman they're only a couple of meters short
01:23:18and again the Western Samoan defence taking time to regroup but the whistle is gone
01:23:24Robert Jones got the faintest of knock-ons there and it could be a
01:23:28which it is a Western Samoa put in
01:23:36so this very big scrum here for Western Samoa
01:23:40they've had their problems with the scrum in the second half that's a very good shove
01:23:44from the Welshman as well but a very bad feed there crooked feed from Matthew Byer
01:23:52and an opportunity here for the Welsh well I guess Jamie they really must
01:23:55go for the three points first I would have thought so I would have taken the kick and gone back to
01:23:59halfway but no they're going for the six points they're using the strength of Phil Davis he's at
01:24:04the line what does Mr Roban say no try well my first impression there Jamie was that he in fact
01:24:17got to the try line but Roban on the wrong side may not have had the best view of that absolutely
01:24:22right that's exactly what I thought too and it'd be interesting to see what the
01:24:25replay shows if we get a chance but with obviously Wales they are from the line we're going live
01:24:34there is just five minutes of the match remaining the Welsh are not out of this yet
01:24:37down by 16 points tonight they need to score twice ring there's room here for Ye and Evans try
01:24:50it's the captain that has galvanized the Welshman into action scoring the try 16 points to 13
01:24:58but it came from that very strong Welsh scrum set up by their forwards room out on the right
01:25:03wing for Ye and Evans lovely pass from Mark Ring and the Welsh are back in the match
01:25:11Ring with the little dummy timed his pass beautifully to Ye and Evans
01:25:14no one home on the right wing it's 16 to 13
01:25:20obviously the kick was astray while we're looking at the replay
01:25:25the disappointment from the crowd and so the Welsh still trailing by three but the little
01:25:29bit of magic there from Mark Ring wrong-footing the Western Samoan defense giving room for Ye
01:25:34and Evans he finished it off and it's been two tries apiece
01:25:44the draw doesn't really interest Wales either I think they've got to go for the win
01:25:50Ayalupo kicking the ball as deep as he can down to the Welsh line Ring again
01:25:58and the Western Samoans keen to keep the ball in the field of play
01:26:09and the Welsh having to throw the ball around at every opportunity now as Jamie
01:26:12Salmon said they need four points rather than three a draw isn't of much use to them
01:26:20but in throwing the ball around they've got to be careful
01:26:22the Western Samoans appealing for the loose head but Rabarn
01:26:29claiming it was a Western Samoan knock on first. Western Samoan backs mustn't come up too quickly
01:26:35here because it's obvious the Wales are going to run it and they'll probably do a cut out pass
01:26:39and if so if they come up too quickly they'll be out of the game got to run it Wales
01:26:4410 metres outside their 22 ring
01:26:51dropped by Scott Gibbs and that's full time it's all over here at the National Stadium
01:26:57at Cardiff Arms Park Mr Rabarn who's played very little injury time major upset in the World Cup
01:27:03here's the happiest man in Wales at the moment Peter Fadiallopa who's led his side to an historic
01:27:08win in their first appearance at the World Cup the cradle of the Pacific has become the toast of the world
