00:00:00The World Cup committee, refereeing committee, have brought in these chaps for experience and I suppose to engender to, one might say,
00:00:08interest in refereeing in those particular countries.
00:00:11Because one of the big problems in modern football is it's getting harder and harder to get people to referee.
00:00:30The World Cup Committee, refereeing committee, have brought in these chaps for experience and I suppose to engender to, one might say,
00:00:36interest in refereeing in those particular countries.
00:01:00The Italian national anthem and now the national anthem of the United States, the Star Spangled Banner.
00:02:00Star Spangled Banner
00:02:30So, way to the right, the Italian team have a last moment together before the playing of this game.
00:02:46And here they come. Now, the Italians bring twin brothers to the team today.
00:02:50There is a nice look at their team. You see number 11, Marcello Cutita and number 1, Massimo Cutita.
00:02:56Twin brothers, but number 1, Massimo Cutita is 26 kilograms bigger than his twin brother.
00:03:03Luigi Troiani, the fullback, a very good kicker, but it's probable that Diego Dominguez, the former Argentinian player,
00:03:10born in Cordoba, but his mother was Italian, so he's qualified for Italy. It's probable he will take the kicks at goal.
00:03:19Here's the United States team. It's got a lot of players born outside the country.
00:03:24The two New Zealanders, Daly number 9 and Flay number 2, Mark Williams, English-born, number 13,
00:03:30and Ray Nelson, the Scottish-born player, number 15, hushing down for the kickoff.
00:03:35Referee is Owen Doyle from Ireland. And to kick off, we've got Mark Williams, the English-born player,
00:03:44born not far from here at Chester in England, and the United States in the red against Italy in the blue.
00:03:53There's the halfback Daly, away to Michael Dijon, the South African-born player.
00:03:59And that's Gianni Zanon, that's a crotchie there, coming up to United States territory.
00:04:06High to Diego Dominguez, and there's the first good long kick by Diego Dominguez, chasing back is Eric Whittaker
00:04:12on the left wing side. And Whittaker takes the ball up and out, just close to the corner flag.
00:04:19Now this is little Diego Dominguez. Back in 1988, he played for the Argentinian universities team,
00:04:25which went very well indeed at the World Cup for university players.
00:04:28He was then picked in the Pumas to tour New Zealand in 89, but after that, he decided to make his play for Italy,
00:04:37the home country of his mother. And so he's here playing for the Italians today, Diego Dominguez.
00:04:44Giancarlo Pavetta throws, back on the American side to Whittaker, the left winger.
00:04:52Now here is Paolo Baccardi, the right winger. And big Kevin Swords has the ball,
00:05:02but Owen Doyle says men in front are within the 10 meter circle.
00:05:18So there's the oldest man in the Rugby World Cup. When I say oldest, it's equal with Paul Rendall of England,
00:05:24who hasn't yet played in this tournament. They're born on exactly the same day, in 1954, both 37 years of age.
00:05:31The Americans showing good speed. Mark Williams, the centre, gets his kick away.
00:05:38Troiani, and that could have deflected to touch. Yes. I think it deflected to touch, didn't it?
00:05:46Wasn't it charged down? He's trying to explain that to the referee. Here's Troiani.
00:05:53Interesting Mark Williams. He was a very talented young man in the UK here, and played a lot for Middlesex.
00:06:00He had a tremendous amount of skill and got badly hurt and left for a year.
00:06:03I think he may have gone over on a sporting scholarship to the US.
00:06:08But a talented young man. Very good for what they call the fly half here.
00:06:15Thrown in by Flea, number two. That's the halfway line. The Italian halfback is Ivan Francescato.
00:06:23And there is Francescato. A high kick and a good one too. Waiting for it is Swords.
00:06:31And now out to Mark Williams. His kick is charged down. And that's a good run by Fabio Gattinello.
00:06:39And the try is scored by Stefano Barber.
00:06:50A shock try to the Italian scored by their inside centre, Stefano Barber, after Mark Williams' kick was charged down.
00:06:57Here's the last stages of it. The pass from the charge down freed up Stefano Barber and he dashed in by the posts.
00:07:07So there he is, Stefano Barber. He plays his rugby at home in the Italian champion team, Milano, with the David Campisi of Australia.
00:07:15And he's in for the early try. Time gone is just a little over three minutes.
00:07:20Yes, Mark Williams looked as if he was going to take five minutes to get rid of that ball. He obviously had about five things going through his mind.
00:07:31I think he might be the man who they're relying on tactically and he took so long to make up his mind on the tactic that it was all over.
00:07:40Very simple try after the charge down.
00:07:43The kicker is Diego Dominguez. Italy are out to six points to nil, thanks to a charge down.
00:07:51And Dominguez has converted Barber's try. The Italians are six and the American Eagles are nil.
00:07:58Well, at this stage, one would say that the Italians are playing with more control football.
00:08:12The Americans are trying to run the ball right from inside their 25 and it could prove suicidal at present.
00:08:18Here's Mark Williams to kick out. He's the man who had his kick charged down and the Italians sprung away to score with the Paolo Vacari, Gaitaniello and Barber.
00:08:34And finally Stefano Barber scored the try. There is offside play by Massimo Cotita.
00:08:48And there is a referee with Barry Daly, the New Zealander, and it looks like a shot at goal has been called for.
00:08:55Mark Williams has called himself or called up to take the shot at goal.
00:09:04Well, a bit stingy on the sand there, Earl. Not much sand, not enough, I think, for Mark Williams to make.
00:09:09It's a little, as they described it the other day when Grant Fox was kicking, it's a little mud pie.
00:09:14So he's called for some more. Look, that's a pathetic little bucket, isn't it?
00:09:23What a lovely scene. The ground is jam-packed with people. The official capacity is listed at 7,000.
00:09:31They've certainly got that. Here's a chance for the Americans after six minutes of play to close the gap.
00:09:39Mark Williams is their kicker.
00:09:45Well, he didn't hit that at all well, did he? And that's a touchdown for a 22 dropout.
00:09:57No chance, six minutes gone.
00:10:01Well, that was bad positioning by the Americans. The kick by Dominguez went straight over the top of the big lock forward, Bill Levesy, and into touch.
00:10:10Yes, no one covered up the holes at all.
00:10:14Pavetta throws. Oh, lovely jump by number five, but was he helped? Gian Battista Croce.
00:10:24He's up there for five minutes.
00:10:26The Americans have got it back. Daly, tough little halfback.
00:10:31First five, eight. Michael De Jong, up they go for the jump.
00:10:40And that was Chechenato, number eight.
00:10:53One of Ireland's top referees, Owen Doyle.
00:11:01There's Tony Flay, the Yorker, the Rotorua-born player from New Zealand.
00:11:07Number six is Brian Vizard.
00:11:12And number seven for the Italian team is Gianni Zanon.
00:11:18The captains are both flankers on the near side here in this scrum.
00:11:22Six against seven, Vizard and Zanon.
00:11:31The referee is actually speaking to them in French.
00:11:34And I think that's probably a little easier for them to understand than his Irish accent.
00:11:40Daly, De Jong, lovely pass, Williams. Higgins lost it.
00:11:45This is De Jong. Daly, the Americans looked good at the start of that movement.
00:11:50Now they seem to be going backwards.
00:11:53There's one thing that's noticeable, the Italians are big chaps.
00:11:57There's certainly no midgets, there's some thick-set lads in there.
00:12:05The Italian front row, Franco Persi-Curti is on the far side.
00:12:09Near us is Massimo Cutita.
00:12:11That's the twin brother of Marcello Cutita, who we haven't seen yet.
00:12:14They're flying left winger.
00:12:17Daly finds De Jong, running wide.
00:12:20Kevin Higgins, number 12.
00:12:23Daly again. De Jong, trying to find Ray Nelson.
00:12:27Mark Williams, out to Eric Whittaker, the left winger.
00:12:30A lively young player, gets his feet up.
00:12:32The Italians must make those spot tackles.
00:12:34The one's there.
00:12:35De Jong, trying to find Ray Nelson.
00:12:37Mark Williams, out to Eric Whittaker, the left winger.
00:12:40A lively young player, gets his feet up.
00:12:42The Italians must make those spot tackles.
00:12:44The one's we call the first tackle.
00:12:46Francescato.
00:12:51Ray Nelson lets it bounce.
00:12:54And the Glasgow-born fullback, Ray Nelson, takes it across the touchline.
00:13:01It was a grand little run. There was plenty of play there.
00:13:03Great little run by Francescato.
00:13:07But that wing three-quarter for the States looked as if he'd done a jink and dive to the Whittaker.
00:13:13He was really all over the place.
00:13:15Loved the little run.
00:13:17Reminiscent almost of Batty. He's not very large either.
00:13:24Giancarlo Pavetta.
00:13:33De Jong, off the right foot.
00:13:35Good kick, but it's straight to Vacardi.
00:13:37This is Troiani, right across the field.
00:13:40That's Marcello Cotita down in the foreground.
00:13:42Very fast winger.
00:13:44Gary Hines giving it back to Nelson, the fullback.
00:13:48Well, Ray Nelson was a very promising track and field athlete in Scotland.
00:13:53He won the Scottish 400 metres championship, and then he took a scholarship to the United States.
00:13:58And he's never been back.
00:14:00He's now playing for the United States, a 30-year-old.
00:14:02Still a very fine athlete, appearing in the Rugby World Cup.
00:14:05Raymond Nelson, the fullback.
00:14:10As you can see, he's got a lot of pace and gas,
00:14:12because whenever he goes to Hong Kong, he regularly goes to Hong Kong for America.
00:14:16And shows a lot of pace in sevens.
00:14:19Francescato got bold over that time.
00:14:28Interesting to see Ivan Francescato get up.
00:14:33You'll recognise him with the sort of the beetle haircut.
00:14:35Here he comes.
00:14:37There he is.
00:14:38Now, this is from a remarkable sporting family.
00:14:41The Francescato's from up in Treviso, up in the north.
00:14:44Four brothers have represented Italy.
00:14:47And that's got to be some kind of a world record.
00:14:50Some of them, Reno and Nello, were among some of Italy's finest players.
00:14:57Good kick by De Jong.
00:14:59Troiani behind is 22.
00:15:07Luigi Troiani.
00:15:09There's a good kick by Troiani, pushing it forward.
00:15:12The Italians are quite happy to play down on the opposition half.
00:15:17Daly, De Jong, Williams.
00:15:21Again, they're having problems there.
00:15:23Number seven for the Americans is Rob Farley.
00:15:25He's the fast man.
00:15:26Out to Dominguez, a charge down.
00:15:28Williams, Higgins.
00:15:31Trying to get it free to Whittaker, the left winger.
00:15:35They're throwing the ball out.
00:15:37Now, out to Marcello Cuccita.
00:15:40He's a lovely runner, this man.
00:15:44Caught that time by Hine.
00:15:47Here's the man that scored the try.
00:15:49Oh, and they hit him hard that time.
00:15:51And Mark Williams is penalised for a bodies check on Stefano Barber,
00:15:59who's scored the only try so far.
00:16:01A stern check on Barber, right on halfway.
00:16:18Luigi Troiani kicks.
00:16:20Kicked it too far, and his opposite number, Nelson,
00:16:25kicks it out. Ray Nelson.
00:16:27Becoming a very common ploy, though, now,
00:16:29to kick it down parallel with the touchline,
00:16:32get the opposition to put it out, and of course, therefore,
00:16:34it's your throw-out.
00:16:35And they still made 25 out of the Italians.
00:16:38I think he deliberately did it.
00:16:41Big jump by Gian Battista Crocci.
00:16:44Referee had a good look for that one,
00:16:46but although it looks like it's assisted,
00:16:49it was a big jump.
00:16:50And with the ball now is Pavetta.
00:16:52Number nine is Francescato.
00:16:55Marcello Cuccita is 11.
00:16:58And the rolling ball put in by the Italians.
00:17:01Italians are coached by a Frenchman, Bertrand Foucard.
00:17:08Number eight hands it to Francescato.
00:17:11Dominguez.
00:17:13Francescato.
00:17:15They lacked a number seven there, didn't they?
00:17:19And now they're in a bit of trouble.
00:17:20Crocci's lost it.
00:17:22Now the Americans rush away with Bill Levesy.
00:17:26Two knock-ons.
00:17:27Yes, they're too desperate to get it away.
00:17:29They've got to actually set it.
00:17:31They're firing a pack of people all the time
00:17:33that are in a worse position than themselves
00:17:35as the Americans were advancing,
00:17:37and were hitting them backwards.
00:17:40They've got to set it at those sort of situations,
00:17:42give them time to regroup.
00:17:48Daly.
00:17:49His number eight is Tony Ridnell.
00:17:53Ridnell's not bound there either.
00:17:55Theoretically, the scrum half, Francescato from Italy
00:17:59could come around and kick that ball away
00:18:01from between that number eight's feet.
00:18:04Because he's not bound at all.
00:18:05Look where he's got his hand.
00:18:06He's just lying on the bum of the lock.
00:18:09Daly away to Dijon.
00:18:11Gives it a healthy thump.
00:18:12Triani.
00:18:18Well taken by Ridnell.
00:18:19Near the touchline.
00:18:21Francescato.
00:18:23Crocci.
00:18:25Halfway line.
00:18:32Francescato.
00:18:33Dominguez.
00:18:36Lovely kick by Dominguez.
00:18:38Looking every inch
00:18:40in the Hugo Porta style, of course.
00:18:43Born in Cordova.
00:18:45And Earl Curtin will grumble
00:18:47because he doesn't run onto the ball,
00:18:48but that's Earl Curtin here.
00:18:50But Diego Dominguez, now a 25-year-old,
00:18:52and a good tactical kick up to the corner.
00:18:54Yes, it was a lovely kick
00:18:55because he just pushed it through to the corner.
00:18:57Knew exactly what he was doing.
00:18:58Came back inside, steadied himself,
00:19:01and gained all that ground.
00:19:02Sadly, they've lost the penalty here now to the US.
00:19:11The Italians have had a win also
00:19:12in the Rugby World Cup last time out in New Zealand.
00:19:16They beat Argentina.
00:19:18But this year they turned out to Namibia.
00:19:21Sorry, they beat Fiji.
00:19:23And they turned out to Namibia this year.
00:19:27Lost both the Test matches.
00:19:30Dominguez.
00:19:32Number 8 forward is Chechenato.
00:19:36Pressure play by the Americans.
00:19:37They've got them bustled all over the place.
00:19:39That's Guyton Yellow, number 13, who's down.
00:19:43Yes, they're playing basketball there.
00:19:53They get slightly lost at ball time, don't they?
00:19:56They don't quite smother it clear.
00:19:57They don't go forward.
00:19:58They roll sideways.
00:19:59Chechenato off to Francescato.
00:20:02Running through down on that side is Vacardi.
00:20:04And Nelson takes it out.
00:20:09There's Ivan Francescato.
00:20:10He's a 24-year-old.
00:20:11He's much younger than the other three brothers
00:20:13who played for Italy.
00:20:15They were playing back in the 1970s.
00:20:20But a lovely story about Ivan Francescato.
00:20:23As a 29-year-old, he got his first cap.
00:20:25And he cried his eyes out in the dressing room
00:20:27before going out to play for his country
00:20:29on his Test debut a year ago.
00:20:31Francescato now with the ball.
00:20:32Long one to Dominguez with the dropkick.
00:20:36It's across the face of the goalpost.
00:20:39Six to nil.
00:20:41Italy lead thanks to an early try by Stefano Barber.
00:20:44And there's the Americans replying
00:20:46with a bit of their own initiative.
00:20:47Troiani.
00:20:54Farley.
00:20:58And that seemed to come off the chest of Rob Farley.
00:21:01And the Belgian touch judge there
00:21:03has given the Americans the throw.
00:21:07These ears here belong to some of the best ears
00:21:09I've seen in rugby for a long time.
00:21:10These ones belong to the man in the foreground,
00:21:12Tony Flay.
00:21:17Right, right.
00:21:22Well, he pitched it down his own side.
00:21:26And referee didn't see that.
00:21:27He saw a gap there.
00:21:29It's the lack of a gap.
00:21:30Yeah.
00:21:31And they refused to move away.
00:21:33The Italians did.
00:21:35But Flay lost the ball when he threw it in.
00:21:37You could see it.
00:21:39Mike De Jong, the fly half, the first five-eight.
00:21:42Big, long kick.
00:21:43Troiani.
00:21:48Troiani's tried the long one as well.
00:21:49Daly.
00:21:52Nice run by Daly.
00:21:55That's Levesy, number five.
00:21:56Bill Levesy.
00:22:09We hear some lovely things through the microphone.
00:22:11And you see the little grin on Owen Doyle's face.
00:22:13A lovely Irish accent, he said
00:22:15to Chris Lippert there,
00:22:17Don't dare.
00:22:18Do you understand me?
00:22:20The prop just looked away.
00:22:21So he said,
00:22:22Look me in the eye and tell me you understand me.
00:22:24And the American prop said,
00:22:25I understand you clearly, sir.
00:22:28Look at that.
00:22:29Higgins nearly put through the gap nicely by De Jong.
00:22:31But well caught.
00:22:32The tackler was Roberto Saetti.
00:22:35And here's Kochi holding things up now.
00:22:37Gian Battista Kochi.
00:22:41Yes, Riddle never slowed down.
00:22:43The number eight for US then
00:22:44when he went to pick that up
00:22:45that was well positioned
00:22:46and he was running onto it
00:22:47but he was going on too fast.
00:22:48He had to steady himself,
00:22:49pick it up and then flip somebody else
00:22:51on the burst.
00:22:53They're messing up a few of the fundamentals
00:22:55but then you expect that.
00:22:57We're probably too harsh and too critical
00:22:58on not making mistakes.
00:23:04Francescato.
00:23:05Dominguez.
00:23:06Again that kick
00:23:07off his
00:23:09left boot.
00:23:10Nelson's claimed it well.
00:23:12Waiting at halfway.
00:23:13A bit of
00:23:15naughty work by Saetti.
00:23:17Roberto Saetti.
00:23:19And the Italians have got the penalty.
00:23:21He stood right in front of the catcher
00:23:22and blocked the Americans coming through.
00:23:25He sure did.
00:23:28And there's Dominguez
00:23:29who gets a free shot
00:23:30kicking with the
00:23:31right boot down to
00:23:33what appears to be his
00:23:34favourite corner of the field.
00:23:36Diego Dominguez.
00:23:37It's his fifth cap in fact.
00:23:38Another player who plays for the champion
00:23:40Milano club
00:23:41along with David Campisi.
00:23:43For a slight man
00:23:44he really gets some distance doesn't he?
00:23:46He times it well.
00:23:51The man standing to the left
00:23:52is Brian Bizud.
00:23:53Here's Tony Flay.
00:23:55You're watching
00:23:56rugby action from Otley.
00:23:57Aren't they enjoying it?
00:23:58The Americans and Italian supporters
00:24:00dotted among the other rugby supporters
00:24:03here at Otley in the north of England.
00:24:06The Americans put in the big rumble.
00:24:10Number three for Italy there is
00:24:11Proposicurti
00:24:13Daly.
00:24:15And they're burying Daly.
00:24:17But number two is offside.
00:24:20Giancarlo Pervetta.
00:24:30Here he is.
00:24:31The grand old man of Italian rugby.
00:24:33He was first capped for his country
00:24:35in 1979.
00:24:37Now I'm just wondering
00:24:38if anyone's been playing
00:24:39international rugby
00:24:40at the 1991 World Cup
00:24:42for longer than that.
00:24:43This is his 13th season
00:24:46in the Italian colours
00:24:47and he's carved up 44 caps.
00:24:49Number three is
00:24:50Franco Proposicurti.
00:24:53And there's a little injury break
00:24:55here after
00:24:5722 minutes in the first half.
00:24:59The injured player
00:25:00is Fred Paoli.
00:25:02He's the grand old man of American rugby.
00:25:04In fact, along with Paul Rendell
00:25:05as I mentioned
00:25:06the grand old man of this Rugby World Cup
00:25:09at 37 years of age.
00:25:11Earl Curtin, your thoughts so far in the game?
00:25:13The quality of the rugby we're seeing?
00:25:15Well, they seem intent on moving the ball
00:25:18both sides
00:25:19and they are trying to run it round
00:25:20because they're not actually getting
00:25:22the passes to hand
00:25:23and they're not slowing down
00:25:24to pick up rough ball
00:25:25and as I said before
00:25:27the Italians seem to be pushing the ball
00:25:29back to put players in what you'd call
00:25:31a worse position than themselves.
00:25:33They're not setting the ball
00:25:34like you'd see the All Blacks do.
00:25:37They would never throw back to somebody
00:25:39to allow the opposition
00:25:40to keep the drive on.
00:25:42They would set it up
00:25:43and then clear it from the ruckle
00:25:44the ball would actually form.
00:25:47This is Barry Daly
00:25:48who's also receiving attention.
00:25:50Barry Daly from the little New Zealand town
00:25:52of Sanson
00:25:54and Earl Curtin and I are from New Zealand.
00:25:57Sanson and to me
00:25:58Earl is just a little
00:26:00left turn in the road isn't it?
00:26:01Not much at Sanson.
00:26:04But boy oh boy
00:26:05he really enjoys his rugby
00:26:06does Barry Daly.
00:26:12Plays for the San Jose Seahawks.
00:26:18Lifting, well they got him that time.
00:26:20Croce is penalised for lifting
00:26:22Daly with the ball.
00:26:28About 47 metres out
00:26:29Mark Williams is coming across
00:26:30his previous attempted goal
00:26:32looked like it came up well short.
00:26:37Mike De Jong
00:26:39going for position.
00:26:56Kevin Swords there
00:26:57behind Chris Lippert
00:26:59at the American
00:27:00front of the American line out.
00:27:06Pavetta
00:27:11Good jump
00:27:13Roberto Favaro
00:27:21Clearance by Troiani
00:27:23Troiani was the top
00:27:25goal kicker for the Italians last year
00:27:27and helped them very much
00:27:29in their qualifying
00:27:31play for the Rugby World Cup
00:27:33when four teams went to the
00:27:35North of Italy and two had to qualify
00:27:37and the Italians won that
00:27:39group beating Romania in the final.
00:27:43Troiani kicked well
00:27:44but he's not doing the place kicking today
00:27:46Dominguez has come in since then
00:27:48as the fly half and goal kicker.
00:27:55Going to the back
00:27:56around goes Chris Lippert
00:27:58the big front forward.
00:28:03De Jong
00:28:04Williams
00:28:07Gary Hine getting in the game
00:28:08for the first time
00:28:09and he's an epic customer
00:28:10as Eric Whittaker
00:28:11but the whistle's gone.
00:28:16Big boy
00:28:17has two in the face hasn't he
00:28:18and he's playing like that
00:28:19plenty of enthusiasm.
00:28:35Francescato, Troiani
00:28:59So at the back of the line-out
00:29:00for the Italians
00:29:01Roberto Saetti is running off the back
00:29:03you see Captain Gianni Zanon
00:29:05number 7
00:29:06is not the open side
00:29:07number 8 is Carlo Cecchinato
00:29:09and number 7 for the Americans
00:29:10to the left at the back
00:29:11is Rob Farley.
00:29:16Big jump there by Bill Levesy
00:29:19that's Zanon
00:29:20out into the back
00:29:21to Stefano Barber
00:29:22the referee's gone back.
00:29:26Good battle there between Mark Williams
00:29:27and Stefano Barber
00:29:29Williams was penalised for a body check
00:29:31about 10 minutes ago
00:29:32they hooked him around the head there
00:29:33but the referee had also blown
00:29:35the whistle beforehand
00:29:36but how about Barber
00:29:37scored the try.
00:29:40Italy are leading by 6 to 0
00:29:42a try after 3 minutes
00:29:43and the time gone now
00:29:4436 minutes
00:29:45first half
00:29:46sorry 26 minutes
00:29:47first half.
00:29:57Well the Italians had the superior scrum
00:29:59to start
00:30:00instead of losing their way slightly
00:30:02at present
00:30:03allowing the Americans to come off the back.
00:30:08Hooked by Tony Flay
00:30:11Daly
00:30:12De Jong running it
00:30:14Williams off the side of his boot.
00:30:19Well Mark Williams
00:30:20he's English born
00:30:21as I say educated in Chester
00:30:23and he was a very good player
00:30:24for the Wasps club here in London
00:30:26and actually
00:30:27was part of a Wasps team
00:30:28that won the Middlesex Sevens
00:30:30back about 85
00:30:33and then he's been across the United States
00:30:35and has a lot of injury problems
00:30:37but is still at 30 years of age
00:30:39a youthful member of the US Eagles.
00:30:45Good jump there by
00:30:47Kutita
00:30:50Kutita number 11 is through on Dominguez kick
00:30:52up goes Tony Ridnell
00:30:59Daly
00:31:00Daly
00:31:01Daly
00:31:02Daly
00:31:21Rugby world cup
00:31:221991
00:31:23we hope wherever you're watching this
00:31:25in North America
00:31:27down in South Africa, in the Pacific, New Zealand. We hope that you're enjoying this
00:31:32coverage, also watching in Japan. Francis Carter, that might cost him 10 metres, if he takes the
00:31:37ball away like that, that's a bit, a bit naughty.
00:31:43Propersi Kurti is penalised there by referee Owen Doyle from Ireland.
00:31:47Well so far the weather has smiled kindly on the Rugby World Cup, it's a
00:31:51lovely day in Offaly. Michael De Jong has ate the cap today, he's actually from a
00:32:00place called Hawick, near Durban, South Africa.
00:32:04Whittaker, oh nice kick ahead by Whittaker, Troiani, Whittaker's got to take it now.
00:32:52American, here's a penalty, for going in over the top. Zanon is penalised, and this one is just
00:33:00outside the 22. A handy position, the Americans will have a shot from here for
00:33:05sure. 29 minutes have gone in the first half. Let's look at that again, big jump
00:33:12by Brian Vizard, into Kevin Swords, who's the record holder for caps for the
00:33:16Americans. Today is his 27th, and he drove in there, referee Doyle on the spot, saw
00:33:21the Italian player go tumbling over the top, and a chance now for the American
00:33:26Eagles to put their first points on the board.
00:33:29Yes, he's a fair cop. Zanon wouldn't let the ball be played, he had those knees up,
00:33:34stopping the ball coming back. And after the tackle, according to law, you must
00:33:40allow the player on the deck to be able to free the ball, or to play it.
00:33:52Mark Williams, he badly missed his first attempt at gold, and the Americans will
00:33:58really want this one as halftime approaches. 10 minutes till the break.
00:34:07So the Eagles are on the board, 30 minutes gone, penalty goal to Mark Williams, big
00:34:14support for the Americans in the crowd, but the Italian team here still lead by
00:34:176-3.
00:34:41Diego Dominguez restarts.
00:34:48Mike de Jong, as I say, he's been living in the States for about 10 years, but he
00:34:54wanted me to say hello to his father in Hawick, which is about a mile, about an
00:34:59hour's drive from Durban in Natal, for Vector Throws.
00:35:1022 metres line there, Francescato. Back to Dominguez as the dropkick on,
00:35:17he hits it well. Why would it was close? Diego Dominguez, no change to the score,
00:35:26his team still leading 6-3. Francescato was burrowing in there like a wee rabbit,
00:35:31getting in to grab that ball out.
00:35:37Well, there was prepared to let the man go in and pull it out,
00:35:40many would reset that strike. Three players were in front, dear me, that's a
00:35:47bad discipline by the American Eagles. Three men in front of the kick, you must
00:35:53be behind the kicker at kickoffs at halfway and at the 22. A good chance here
00:35:58for the Italians now. Money on another dropkick. That's right. How many lira are
00:36:04you prepared to put on it, Earl? You can back in thousands, it gives you a lot of
00:36:09confidence. Yep, here we go.
00:36:12Charge down, loose ball, taken by De Jong, intercepted by Guy Teniello and in a
00:36:21flash he kicked out on the full. Fabio Guy Teniello, there he is, 33 year old, a
00:36:25veteran of the Rugby World Cup in 87 and he kicked to touch on the full. Down to
00:36:34Daly, finds De Jong, running it up, Kevin Higgins.
00:36:43Players going over the top, that time the player penalized is Roberto Fabaro.
00:36:51But Percy Curti gets up in the end.
00:36:59I think the crowd here are picking their favorites. I think the US of A are gonna
00:37:04be the lads for the day. De Jong, that's the best kick he's put in all day. He's
00:37:15obviously being a bit nervous.
00:37:2334 minutes gone. Pervector to throw, Rob Farley down on the back, the 27 year old
00:37:31having his 13th international in a row. Big jump taken by Brian Bizard, the
00:37:36captain. Here come the American Eagles, led on by Kevin Swords, their top-locked
00:37:42forward. What a great run by him and great work of the murky depths of that
00:37:47mall. De Jong, it wasn't a good pass from Daly, not one he could use. And away come
00:37:53the Italians now. They're putting in their own good work now.
00:37:59Daly, De Jong, Williams, Higgins 10 minutes out. Daly again, getting a bit
00:38:10scrambled and confused and the referee steps in and says you're offside and
00:38:15this is an easy one. Daly is taken, dear me. Barry Daly took a quick tap and not
00:38:23even from the mark. Dear me, that was a crazy thing for Barry Daly to do. Look
00:38:28how close the posts are. Time on the clock. The New Zealander at halfback for
00:38:32the Americans took the tap kick. What a crazy thing to do. He took a tap kick
00:38:38there and then fumbled the ball when they should have settled it down and
00:38:41kicked for goal and got six all. Earl Curtin, what would you be saying, Jim, if
00:38:45you were coaching this American side? I'd be saying something like you stupid boy.
00:38:50But in shorter, sharper, more Anglo-Saxon tones? Certainly not on television but I
00:38:56might have mumbled to myself something far worse than that behind the goalposts.
00:38:59Well that is where the Italian players are standing, is where they scramble take
00:39:04place. You wouldn't quit though, would you? Points down just before halftime and you need a
00:39:10psychological lift to go in evenly. He goes and has a rush of blood. You could only
00:39:16describe it as that. Well Fred Paoli taking a contact lens out. Looks like
00:39:22he's going to exist without them. High dad in Chicago. No Chicago players in the
00:39:29American team here but they have a real problem with the spread of rugby across
00:39:32that massive landmass of the United States. Yes, it's very expensive to
00:39:38gather them together for the Americans. Airfares, they say, are astronomical when
00:39:42you think about bringing 40 or 50 players in for a trial. Well the American
00:39:48forwards working hard here. They should really have been at six all. There is the
00:39:53kick away by Fabio Gottaniello. He's the steadying influence in the Italian
00:40:00backline. You can hear him and see him talking to his fellow players all around
00:40:03him. He was also the charge down on Mark Williams's ball to score the first
00:40:08Italian try.
00:40:11Free kick against the Americans there but not jumping in the line. Not jumping in line.
00:40:20They were jumping outside of the imaginary straight line that's formed
00:40:24down the line of touch. Dominguez. He actually said he was outside the
00:40:30five yards. Five yards outside the line. I don't think he was that far off. That's a bit of an Irish
00:40:34exaggeration from referee Alan Doyle. He was maybe one pace wide. But now the
00:40:41Italians swing on to attack and I still can't believe that Barry Daly would have
00:40:45taken a quick kick there. Instead of the six all, here are the Americans back in
00:40:50defense and still behind on the scoreboard. There's one thing you notice
00:40:55Keith, as you have seen right through. The beautiful way they throw the ball.
00:40:59They use that American ball throw and she just darts it.
00:41:21Barbaro is operating at the front of the line and he's operating well too. He's won
00:41:26three balls in a row. The last three that have been thrown.
00:41:30Offside play there and Gianni Zanon throws the ball over. Hits somebody in the hip.
00:41:41Gianni Zanon.
00:41:51Diego Dominguez is going to kick for goal and this could take Italy to nine
00:41:55to three. They're going to run over some sand. I do hope they've got a bigger cup
00:42:01to take all the way over there than they had for Mark Williams earlier.
00:42:11Everybody is calling out sand now.
00:42:16Well it's rather a central town with a lot of granite round. They might find it
00:42:20hard to have the crushed variety. Yeah they're all two little cupfuls.
00:42:28It's a long way to the sea. We're at Otley in the north of England.
00:42:39He's got to take it across more. Just what he didn't put the sand down there.
00:42:42It's got all line out penalties of course taken from 15 meters in.
00:42:48He wouldn't argue with that. Makes it marginally easier. He's a left footer I
00:42:56think so that he's going to come around on the wrong side. No. He's a right footer.
00:43:01He kicks with both feet. Very well. He doesn't worry about one or other.
00:43:06He just naturally whacks whatever side is best.
00:43:12I think he might be a right footer. Yes he is. Diego Dominguez puts Italy
00:43:19into the lead now by nine points to three. 39 minutes gone first half.
00:43:27Again another chap timing the ball well. Making it look easy. But this ball doesn't
00:43:34seem to fly as we've said many many times on commentary. A long way. 50 yards
00:43:39is a long way to get this ball to fly true. The meters. Whatever you use. The Yanks
00:43:45would use yards.
00:43:50Mark Williams kicks out.
00:44:02Similar pattern again in this game as with all the others of this World Cup.
00:44:07These players have been waiting so long to play in this great event that I think
00:44:11they're a bit tight and nervy. They're making a lot of mistakes. It's been the
00:44:15pattern in every game we've seen since the start of the Cup. Daly finds De Jong.
00:44:19The high ball from the Eagles. First five eight. Troiani gets hit by Williams.
00:44:26But he's called a fair catch. A bit of a scuffle breaking out over to the right.
00:44:37Now little Barry Daly's have been a bit off his head in the last few minutes.
00:44:45The American halfback and that's Povetta. The referees just said
00:44:51Parlez-vous Francais.
00:44:58Yes there certainly has been a lot of yap yap yap. No one dwells telling them
00:45:02there now he's had enough of the yap yap yap. Had nothing to do with Barry Daly
00:45:07really. He came in and started pushing people around and a free kick now. The
00:45:11fair catch from behind the 22s. Kick deep. Here's Whittaker. He looks an exciting
00:45:15prospect. Bounces on his feet. Runs hard and kicks.
00:45:19Leighton Yeller makes the catch. Troiani's outside the 22. They've dumped
00:45:26Luigi. Francescato. Sending it to where Whittaker was. Nelson. And Raymond Nelson
00:45:38has to take the ball across the touchline. And that's halftime. A good
00:45:42first half by Italy. They scored the only try after three minutes with a charge
00:45:47down on the pass. Stefano Barber scored. Converted by Dominguez who added a late
00:45:51penalty for a line out infringement. That's the nine points for Italy. The
00:45:55Americans only added a penalty by Mark Williams for Zanon going over the top.
00:45:59There's the halftime scoreline here at Otley in the north of England at cross
00:46:03green. Italy are nine and the American Eagles are three. This is the Scott Pack

00:47:52semi-final in the Aussie indoor tennis champs. Edberg Beek, Ivanisevic 4-6, 7-6,
00:47:577-6 and 7-5 in the tiebreak. He meets Gilbert tomorrow at 4 here on Sky
00:48:02in the final. It's back to Otley, Earl Curtin and Keith Quinn where Italy lead
00:48:07the United States nine points to three.
00:48:11Diego Dominguez. He was good though I felt. He was explaining to both sides
00:48:18exactly what he wanted and expected. Second half begins here in Otley. USA the
00:48:25American Eagles in the red against Italy. Italy lead by nine to three. We've only
00:48:30seen one try and that was in the first few minutes of the game by the man who
00:48:35just kicked the ball, Stefano Barber. Luigi Torriani, the fullback, is a 27
00:48:40year old. It's his 28th cap today. He's been playing for the Italians since 1985.
00:48:49Short and line out call as the second half begins. Tony Flay throws. That was
00:48:57safety number six. It's a shame, Earl, the game is half over and we've hardly seen
00:49:04Marcello Cutito, the flying left winger for the Italians. There he is over in the
00:49:08background. He's a beautiful runner, isn't he? He's a lovely runner. At Lancaster Park
00:49:13when he was playing for Italy in the last World Cup it was the best try of, I
00:49:16say, of the whole competition. Francesco. Evans, how would you like to play half
00:49:22back there with the cross down on the deck in front of you? Look what's happened. They've lost the ball, the Italians.
00:49:29Platineau through on Williams. Oh, a lovely run by the hooker. Poggetta places it
00:49:37beautifully. Francescato with the beetle haircut to Dominguez, kicking wide for
00:49:41Vacari. Nelson comes across. Good attack early in the second half by Italy.
00:49:47Here's Ray Nelson, who made the catch and dispatch close to the corner flag.
00:49:53Poggetta ran well there too. He actually got his body position down low and was
00:49:57smacking opposition players off, US players, and then set it beautifully, you
00:50:01noticed. And to pick it up, to make that charging run, he was the first man I've
00:50:05seen from the Italians slow down to pick the jolly thing up. Now Poggetta makes
00:50:10the throw. Farmed by Kochi, one of their star line-up, way into the World Cup
00:50:15qualifying. A problem of qualifying into this group. It was a very difficult
00:50:20situation for the Italians. They played the final against Romania and really you
00:50:25couldn't blame them for throwing the game, because to win the group they came
00:50:28in to play with New Zealand and England. If they'd lost, they would have played in
00:50:32a slightly easier group in France, where they would have felt perhaps a little
00:50:35more at home than here in Britain. But the Italians took out the victory by 29
00:50:40to 21 in fine fashion. And there's a good clearance by Michael De Jong, the 28
00:50:45year old, playing his eighth cap. I thought that was a New Zealand voice. I could
00:50:51almost hear yelling out there with the accent saying, hey ref, these guys, these
00:50:54Italians, they're lifting. We had suspicions of that early on, but I think
00:51:00Favaro doesn't need much help. There he goes up again, he's got the tap, Favaro.
00:51:04Francescato, a lovely run, Ivan Francescato. What a superb flight this is going to be by Ivan Francescato.
00:51:19The Americans just left him alone. They didn't realise anyone could slip around there. It was very much like that
00:51:24sevens, that two to two one we saw last night, where they hit it to the first man
00:51:28in the jumping line-up, and back it came. And he just goes straight down the sideline.
00:51:34Tremendous run. Look at the gas. Lovely body swerve. Look at it. Absolutely beautiful.
00:51:41Then chops again. Look at that. Two beautiful swerves. Lovely trial.
00:51:50Ivan Francescato, the man that cried in the dressing room before his first International for his country
00:51:55twelve months ago. What a superb try this is. Look at the space he found down the touchline.
00:52:01And two big sidesteps. Look at this. Boom. Whittaker didn't have a show. Nelson comes across.
00:52:06He didn't have a show either. That is a brilliant try for Francescato.
00:52:14Ah yes, that's the stuff rugby's made of. You get a thrill, don't you, when you see something like that.
00:52:19And a lovely appreciation from the crowd too. They gave him a big clap, even though I think
00:52:23that the US team are probably favourites in most of the Otley people's hearts.
00:52:46Well hit by Dominguez. It just dropped in behind the VAR. And that's a good lead now for the Italians.
00:52:52Diego Dominguez converts. The applause rings around the ground. And Italy lead by 15 points to 3.
00:52:59We have a look. It was a kick that was just dropping down. And as it dropped down, it clipped the VAR.
00:53:04Went behind the crossbar. That's a goal. 15 points to 3.
00:53:13Well, let's say the Americans will have to open it up now. The USA, they'll be trying to use as much width as they possibly can.
00:53:20They've got to, because I don't think they can win as many lineouts as they would like.
00:53:26Maybe we might see the great American throwers coming out and throwing it up the middle of the field key.
00:53:30Which is always exciting.
00:53:41Five minutes in the second half. Williams kicks the short one. The Italians are greatly encouraged.
00:53:45It's gone to Cuocci. The young player, even though he's got the thinning hair on top, he's just a young guy.
00:53:50Two meters tall, 6 feet 6, 23 years of age. Troiani with Cutita out there on the left.
00:53:56They can't get it to Cutita. Stefano Barber is the ball player. Now Cutita has it. Swings it to Zanon.
00:54:03Now to Troiani. Whittaker is coming across.
00:54:08Eric Whittaker. Those feet are often errant, and Dominguez has done good work there.
00:54:15Now Favaro, who's had a very good game the lock forward, has taken it into the depths of the mall.
00:54:20Francescato punches the ball high into the corner. Valcari is coming down on Whittaker.
00:54:27Oh, King Dominguez is nearly in there, but it just tipped off his fingers.
00:54:32The Americans are in trouble here. Down 15 to 3, and the Italians are attacking again.
00:54:36Oh, it's just a big surge. You can see him lift the Italians.
00:54:40They've been reasonably emotional people, and they've got a tremendous lift for that last try.
00:54:45And they're all at it now. It's given them a lot of confidence, and they've lost those nerves.
00:54:50The Americans, as you say, are going to be strong.
00:54:53Free kick against Pavetta. Some skullduggery in the depths of that scrum.
00:55:05Here's De Jong's kick from the champion club of the United States, the Denver Barbarians.
00:55:23It's an Italy win. There seems to be a lot of Italian shouting in the crowd there.
00:55:32Perhaps they may have to give a reduction in this count, with the Chianti and the Frascati in some of the restaurants later on.
00:55:39That one's tapped down by Kevin Swords, the number four for America.
00:55:47There's Swords bursting away, along with Flay, the New Zealand-born player, Tony Flay, number two.
00:55:54Barry Daly, De Jong, Chianti coming in, Luigi Chianti, Ray Nelson, halfway.
00:56:13All together, two untidy under there. Nothing was happening. Referee Owen Doyle of Ireland stops it for scrum for the Italians.
00:56:26The Liz Fords aren't getting to give the Americans a link with this ball.
00:56:30They're going down, and he was far too long on the ground without anyone getting over the top of him to get the ball back quickly.
00:56:37They're not freeing it fast enough from Ruckelmoor to give their outside backs a chance.
00:56:43Giancarlo Pavetta, the 34-year-old.
00:56:49Chianti's impressed me today, too. I think he's played very steadily. He did miss touch then, but overall he looks as if he knows what he's doing.
00:56:57He looks steeped in the game of rugby. He doesn't look as if he's been a recent convert, put it that way.
00:57:02Well, of course, a few years ago, the Barbarians Club here in Britain invited Chianti to come and play for them, so he has a high regard from right throughout Europe.
00:57:18Running time in the second half, about nine minutes.
00:57:21Italy, 15, USA, three.
00:57:24Rugby coming to you from Otley in the north of England.
00:57:27Daly has slipped it to Vizit.
00:57:31Vizit to Gary Hine.
00:57:34Vizit again.
00:57:37Farley was involved there as well, number seven.
00:57:41And that's not going to help if there's going to be any fighting.
00:57:47Lippert went across and is having a long look at Chechenato.
00:57:53Not a lovely run there by Brian Vizit.
00:57:56To Gary Hine, and look at Rob Farley, number seven, join in.
00:57:59Vizit gets in it again, number six, near the touchline.
00:58:03And Ridnell, he liked his chances of getting in for the try.
00:58:07And I think that's the best attack the Americans have put together so far.
00:58:10Yes, they didn't lose the ball, they retained it.
00:58:13It was a good drive down that touchline.
00:58:18Pavetta throws, up goes Favaro again, but it's not a good position where he landed.
00:58:29Well, they penalised Favaro there.
00:58:32Owen Doyle has penalised Favaro.
00:58:35Unless he said that he charged or barged the line out, but that was a beautiful take.
00:58:38He had two hands on it.
00:58:40Good player, Roberto Favaro from Treviso.
00:58:47The Americans have taken the tap.
00:58:48There's the throw that Al Curtin said would happen.
00:58:50The big American throw. It's gone loose.
00:58:52Williams.
00:58:56Kicked away by Stefano Barber.
00:58:58And it goes to touch near halfway.
00:59:00Oh, thank goodness.
00:59:02Lovely little bit of enterprise, even though it did bounce, they didn't pick it up.
00:59:07Didn't end in a score for the Italians.
00:59:10Otherwise they might throw it away, not use it in the tournament.
00:59:13Well, let's hope they do.
00:59:15What a marvellous weapon, the big lateral pass, I think they call it.
00:59:19The big lateral.
00:59:20Out to the end.
00:59:21That's right.
00:59:27Tony Flay to throw.
00:59:30Pitches it nicely to Brian Vizard, who's having a good game.
00:59:33The American captain, number six.
00:59:36Yes, that's where they're getting most of their ball off him.
00:59:42So that's the same penalty again.
00:59:44Everybody went down, penalised.
00:59:48Daly with the ball.
00:59:58More discipline from Daly there.
01:00:00He looked at his captain, see what he wanted to do.
01:00:04Well, that kick has gone out in goal from Mike De Jong.
01:00:31Troiani.
01:00:33Opens it up.
01:00:34Bangs it hard with the right boot.
01:00:37Nelson, see how they got back behind Nelson.
01:00:39Gary Hine, who's played twice for Oxford University in the Oxford-Cambridge game.
01:00:44Scored a couple of tries one year, that was the last year.
01:00:47Daly.
01:00:49Oh dear, they've lost the ball again, the Americans.
01:00:51That's their problem.
01:00:52They keep throwing it away.
01:01:01Yes, they're passing sort of under pressure.
01:01:03They're not sort of really clearing it out or passing it quickly enough.
01:01:06They're all looking for the hole and trying to pass it once they get into it.
01:01:08Because they're getting chopped down.
01:01:10Then losing the ball.
01:01:16Each man's having a dip, really.
01:01:32Don't even think about it, he said.
01:01:34I think he was going to give him a whack off the side.
01:01:36And the referee says, don't you even think about it.
01:01:40Irish impersonations from Earl Curtin in this commentary on Owen Doyle.
01:01:4714 minutes gone.
01:01:53Barry Daly, number nine.
01:01:55The hook is from Tony Flay.
01:01:56Tony Ridnell is the number eight.
01:01:58Daly, narrow side.
01:02:09They've got a mixed fortune.
01:02:10They still can't forgive him for that tap kick under the goal post in the first half.
01:02:14When they were down six to three.
01:02:23Knock on through the line out.
01:02:27It's a blue scrum here.
01:02:29Some of those forwards are getting across a little bit slowly.
01:02:32A long way to go in the game.
01:02:41Francis Carter, who set the game alight early in the second half.
01:02:44With a brilliant try.
01:02:45Gets it away to Dominguez.
01:02:49And that's a mile clear on the ball.
01:02:54Diego Dominguez.
01:02:57It still shows a lot of talent.
01:02:59You know, the way he just naturally just whacks under one foot or the other.
01:03:03Doesn't worry about it at all.
01:03:07Left or right.
01:03:08Lovely skill.
01:03:11That's another penalty against the Americans for not jumping in a line.
01:03:15Players are jumping from outside the imaginary line.
01:03:20And a chance for Dominguez to kick them up an attack.
01:03:23Ramping into the line out.
01:03:25And referees don't like it because it normally ends up in a bit of stash or a bit of argy-bargy.
01:03:41Today's referee is Owen Doyle.
01:03:44Up go the Americans.
01:03:45The Italians are winning the line outs.
01:03:47Favaro and Croce.
01:03:50Zanon the captain.
01:03:54Francescato.
01:03:55Dominguez.
01:03:56High ball.
01:03:57Cortita and Guatinello are through.
01:03:59But it wasn't a good kick.
01:04:00Guatinello.
01:04:07Saetti is penalised.
01:04:09Now that's not the first time we've seen that from him.
01:04:10He got in the way of the catchers.
01:04:12He's literally shepherding the player behind him.
01:04:17In this case it was Guatinello.
01:04:19And not allowing the defenders to come up and take the man with the ball.
01:04:25This is Brian Vizit, the captain of the American team.
01:04:32He's from OMBAC in San Diego.
01:04:36And you can see this is his 23rd cap today.
01:04:38You know when they played against France recently they misspelt his name in the programme.
01:04:43Instead of being Vizit it was Wizard.
01:04:48I don't think he'd mind that too much.
01:04:50No, he's had a good game today.
01:04:51He's the American captain.
01:04:55But the Americans haven't really looked like scoring a try here today.
01:04:58No, they just can't put enough passes together and they don't put men into space.
01:05:02They're going to have to be lucky to score one I think.
01:05:07And as we said before they pass far too much under pressure.
01:05:10There's the England camp here.
01:05:12Representing those gentlemen there.
01:05:14Roger Utley to the left.
01:05:17The English have come along to check their opponents here for later games in this round.
01:05:24Yes, I don't think either side will really frighten England though.
01:05:28I can't imagine it.
01:05:30I can't see them being organised enough either of these two sides.
01:05:33English players up in the clubhouse.
01:05:35Will Carling and Jeremy Guscott.
01:05:45England, of course, have got to beat one or the other of these teams.
01:05:49Or both of them.
01:05:50Both.
01:05:51Both to get through to the second round.
01:05:52That's right.
01:05:54Well, on the evidence we've seen so far, Earl, I think they'll be able to do that.
01:05:57Yes, they'll win easily.
01:06:02But that's not to decry what is an entertaining game here in the Rugby World Cup
01:06:07between Italy in the blue, USA in the red.
01:06:11It's 15-3 to Italy.
01:06:19The American captain, Brian Vizard, is leaving the field.
01:06:22That's a great sadness for him.
01:06:23He's got a problem with his elbow there.
01:06:39Yes, he's not in great shape.
01:06:40He's in a lot of pain.
01:06:51Charge down and then to touch.
01:06:53It looks like Sean Lipman will come into the game.
01:06:55Dominguez's kick was charged down.
01:06:58Francis Garda passes very well with his left hand under two,
01:07:01which is always a hard side to pass.
01:07:04Those are good passes.
01:07:05He's getting distance and he's coming away without actually standing up too.
01:07:08He's firing it off the ground.
01:07:12So the new man on the field is Sean Lipman.
01:07:23So there he is, Sean Lipman, his seventh cap today.
01:07:36Sean Lipman there from Santa Monica, 26 years of age.
01:07:41And that's a sad loss for the Americans to lose their captain, Brian Vizard.
01:07:51Francis Garda.
01:07:53Dominguez.
01:08:06So there's Sean Lipman down in the back.
01:08:10Three quarters of the game has gone.
01:08:13Fifteen to three, the Italians lead.
01:08:15Two minutes to play in the match.
01:08:21Flea throws.
01:08:24A bit of Hollywood coming into the American team plan there.
01:08:27One of the players felt they'd been pushed.
01:08:35The Italian equivalent is Spaghetti Western.
01:08:39In field to Ray Nelson.
01:08:47Still another lovely kick by Dominguez.
01:08:51Low driving it, trying to punch it into the 40-yard.
01:08:56Low driving rollover kick into touch.
01:09:02The way to Dominguez, he's kicking again.
01:09:08Taken by Ridnell.
01:09:10Lost.
01:09:11This is Croce.
01:09:13Twenty-two meters line, Gian Battista Croce.
01:09:16Francis Garda.
01:09:17Oh, they're lining up.
01:09:18Dominguez, caught by Daly.
01:09:25Vacari, out to Zanon.
01:09:27Swing and wide again.
01:09:29Perhaps run Marcello Cutita.
01:09:30He gets his first run with the ball.
01:09:32He's a lovely runner.
01:09:33Lobs his pass back in.
01:09:35De Jong takes it 15 meters out.
01:09:37Mike De Jong.
01:09:42The Italians, have they closed this one up?
01:09:46And the whistle goes.
01:09:48Well, at last, we got a bit of a treat.
01:09:50Marcello Cutita, just a flash of his talent there on the left wing.
01:10:00Here's a look at the last part of it.
01:10:02Paolo Vaccaro started it, then Zanon.
01:10:04Out through Barber and Gaitaniello to Turiani.
01:10:07And look at Marcello Cutita.
01:10:09Gary Heine beat him easily.
01:10:11And only a despairing dive by Ray Nelson stopped it there.
01:10:16He's good, isn't he?
01:10:17You know, there's very little room to move there.
01:10:20Touch judge is talking on the far side to Owen Doyle.
01:10:28And Massimo Cutita has been penalized for punching.
01:10:32Kevin Swords there.
01:10:46Big kick.
01:10:48Cutita.
01:10:52Another big thump.
01:10:55Well, there he is, Marcello Cutita.
01:10:57He's actually born in Italy.
01:10:59But with his twin brother, Massimo, the family went out to South Africa,
01:11:02where they lived for a long time.
01:11:04But he's back in Italy.
01:11:07Yes, as we were saying before, he just needs about 3 meters.
01:11:10And he was around Heine then, leaving him for dead.
01:11:15Lovely add-off.
01:11:20Time is running out for the Americans, 15 to 3.
01:11:2423 minutes gone.
01:11:26Again, Ridnell felt he was pushed in there.
01:11:30Francescato, what a lovely run with the twinkling feet.
01:11:34Oh, lovely take by Barber.
01:11:37Lost forward by Saetti.
01:11:42A super run again by Ivan Francescato.
01:11:45Listen and look at the hands together for lovely footwork.
01:11:51This is a good run again.
01:11:54Look, he has a look and then just again, that lovely little step, isn't it?
01:11:58And then accelerates away.
01:12:01Good pass too.
01:12:03And he's in.
01:12:07A lovely drive for Cuadro Bacari.
01:12:14They worked it to the right from the scrum.
01:12:17Ivan Francescato again.
01:12:19This is the end on view.
01:12:21Another sidestep, put him into space, got him away from Whitaker.
01:12:24And Cuadro Bacari, he took it down under his knees and then stretched out and got there.
01:12:29Bacari scores the try.
01:12:31It's 19 to 3.
01:12:44Cuadro Bacari, he's just 20 years of age.
01:12:47Brand newcomer into the Italian team this season.
01:12:51He's played three tests.
01:12:53This is his third test.
01:12:54He's got a try in every game he's played.
01:12:57That was good, strong running, but he was well and truly set up.
01:12:59I mean, it was a lovely run again.
01:13:02He's rapidly becoming a star, isn't he?
01:13:04If he could get out on that left-hand side and give this fellow Kitita a few runs together, that'd be formidable.
01:13:11Diego Dominguez with the conversion attempt.
01:13:1619 to 3.
01:13:24What a superb kick by Dominguez.
01:13:2721 to 3.
01:13:29The Italians are starting to run away from it here.
01:13:33Run away with it.
01:13:343 from 3 from Dominguez.
01:13:39In fact, by my reckoning, that's four successful kicks for him today.
01:13:42Three conversions and a penalty.
01:13:45Yes, he threw that back, didn't he?
01:13:50A lovely kick from Diego Dominguez makes it three tries to Italy.
01:13:59Three converted tries and the penalty.
01:14:0121 to 3.
01:14:03Ritnell goes forward first.
01:14:07Lipman is number 17, the replacement for Vizid.
01:14:11Daly, were they back 10 metres?
01:14:14I don't think they were.
01:14:15A lovely run by Barry Daly.
01:14:17He pulled off his own half.
01:14:18Sidestepped the American halfback this time.
01:14:22Ritnell trying to dig deep.
01:14:24Penalty for the American Eagles.
01:14:28I didn't think the Blues were back 10 metres then.
01:14:33I think this time they were back 10 metres.
01:14:37I think this time they've got to take the tap.
01:14:40Barry Daly, has he got an American pass?
01:14:46American football pass?
01:14:48Perhaps not.
01:14:49He's a New Zealander, lived there for a couple of years.
01:14:51Let's see what he does.
01:14:53It's a long ball out to Ritnell, I think it is.
01:14:58Scrabbling for the ball.
01:15:00They've got another penalty.
01:15:04They've got another penalty.
01:15:06They'll probably still go for the six-pointers.
01:15:11Daly, he's tapped it again.
01:15:13Did he take that from the mark?
01:15:14I'm not sure he did.
01:15:25Penalty, but they're coming back to the five-metre mark for this penalty.
01:15:32Barry Daly in the spotlight at the moment with three taps from short penalties.
01:15:37Swing and ride to big Kevin Swords.
01:15:42And it's try for Kevin Swords from the third tap kick.
01:15:48And the big veteran locked forward.
01:15:50The highest capped player in American rugby history at 31 caps gets the pass.
01:15:54He had momentum up.
01:15:55And look at the big fella.
01:15:57He took on Pavetta and Troiani and got the ball down.
01:16:02Yes, he attacked the right side too.
01:16:04It was a good call there by Daly.
01:16:06He pushed it one way for a start.
01:16:08Then he moved it here, looked very wide.
01:16:10And he put the big man against Dominguez.
01:16:12He's a very small chap, obviously.
01:16:14And he just couldn't hold the bulk of this fellow.
01:16:17And down he went.
01:16:18Good try.
01:16:25It always seems to me so silly.
01:16:28When they go and they fire it to a big, fat ball.
01:16:31And a great, big joker to go and have a smack at more fat balls.
01:16:35I mean, it's like almost the immovable amount.
01:16:37To me, it's ridiculous.
01:16:38Far better to put a big man out wide and have him punch in on smaller fly halves of first five eights.
01:16:44Let him punch there.
01:16:45So it was a good call by Daly.
01:16:4721 to 9.
01:16:49Italy now over USA.
01:16:51Looking at the watch.
01:16:52It's 12 minutes to go.
01:16:59Dominguez.
01:17:05De Jong.
01:17:12Michael De Jong up to Ward's halfway.
01:17:16Dominguez.
01:17:28Pavetta throws.
01:17:30Hit somebody on the head there.
01:17:35Maybe it didn't.
01:17:36The referee said it was a knock off.
01:17:46Daly.
01:17:49De Jong.
01:17:51Swing and pass.
01:17:52Higgins.
01:17:53Nelson's in.
01:17:54Oh, Whittaker had a big chance there.
01:17:57Vacari.
01:18:00Valenella almost had the intercept too.
01:18:16Francescato.
01:18:18Dominguez.
01:18:20Left out Barber.
01:18:21Gaitaniello.
01:18:22Kocica.
01:18:24They got him.
01:18:25Tipped him over and he was about to get up.
01:18:40I'm impressed with Francescato's passing.
01:18:43He's passing well, quickly, long and it's flat.
01:18:47His technique is quite good.
01:18:51Ridnell.
01:18:52Daly.
01:18:55Lipman.
01:18:56That was a forward pass.
01:18:58Forward pass to Sean Lipman, the replacement player for Brian Vizit.
01:19:14Collapse.
01:19:22Well, the two halfbacks pushing each other in the background.
01:19:25Now, that Barry Daly, he's a bit of a hothead, the American scrum half.
01:19:32He just pushed Francescato.
01:19:34Francescato's right to stand there.
01:19:35He's putting the ball in.
01:19:37Francescato cradles the ball with his hands.
01:19:39Gets it clear to Dominguez.
01:19:41Another charge down.
01:19:43Whittaker.
01:19:44Now, this could be interesting.
01:19:46Whittaker can stop on a sixpence.
01:19:54But it's all together buried too tight.
01:20:03Doyle's being a wee bit kinder now.
01:20:05He's not begging so much for the getting down or losing grip
01:20:10and going down onto the floor.
01:20:16Which is understandable when you think because it's, you know,
01:20:19I mean, he's got to let it go a bit.
01:20:21He realises these sides don't have as much tuition or probably or practice
01:20:25nor do they train probably as much as the top sides.
01:20:31Favaro there struggling to get up.
01:20:34He's had a very good game though.
01:20:36Good number two in the line-up.
01:20:39And I think even against England,
01:20:41the chap of his calibre will win his own ball
01:20:44or get very close to it.
01:20:46They rate him very highly in Italy as a line-out man.
01:20:49Barry Daly, who's been a central figure in the game.
01:20:51Not always for the right reasons.
01:20:53The fly half.
01:20:54De Jong doubling around.
01:20:56Nelson Fu.
01:20:59He's the man who's got the speed.
01:21:01Lipman, the replacement flanker.
01:21:03Now, can the Americans turn it over?
01:21:05It's there for Daly.
01:21:07De Jong.
01:21:08Higgins left out.
01:21:09Williams.
01:21:10Whittaker.
01:21:12Nice work.
01:21:13Clicked on again.
01:21:14De Jong to Mark Williams.
01:21:16But he's lost it.
01:21:17Kicked ahead.
01:21:18But Zanon, the captain,
01:21:20stood there like a soccer goalkeeper,
01:21:22plucked it out of the sky
01:21:24and then kicked it to touch.
01:21:26Gianni Zanon.
01:21:28His 44th cap for Italy today.
01:21:31Leading the side.
01:21:34He showed good hands there.
01:21:36Stuck to his hands.
01:21:37He balanced with the pirouette.
01:21:39Whacked it away.
01:21:49Ticking away.
01:21:5033 minutes gone.
01:21:51Second half.
01:21:52The Italians leading by 21-9.
01:21:53That is not straight.
01:21:55Blue scrum.
01:21:58There is an injury, I think.
01:22:00Further out.
01:22:01Somebody is hobbling off in the background.
01:22:06Somebody is holding their head.
01:22:07Francesc Gatto.
01:22:12I must be feeling the temperature.
01:22:14A lot of the Italian players are playing in T-shirts.
01:22:17On half way.
01:22:19Cecchinato is the number one player.
01:22:21He's got it.
01:22:22He's got it.
01:22:23He's got it.
01:22:24On half way.
01:22:25Cecchinato is the number right.
01:22:27Back to Dominguez.
01:22:31And that's another pinpoint.
01:22:33Accuracy.
01:22:35Kick from Diego Dominguez.
01:22:39It's another low trajectory.
01:22:41Like we've mentioned many times before.
01:22:43Very efficient kicking.
01:22:55Francesc Gatto.
01:22:56Dominguez.
01:22:57It's a set move.
01:22:58Oh, a lovely run.
01:23:00Gaitaniello.
01:23:01Beautiful try.
01:23:07Fabio Gaitaniello.
01:23:08The 33-year-old.
01:23:10The man who's been playing in the Italian team for 11 seasons.
01:23:14And what a lovely pass by Gaitaniello.
01:23:16And a lovely pass here from Dominguez.
01:23:18To put Gaitaniello in.
01:23:20Yes, he's holding it up.
01:23:21It's a lovely punch, isn't it?
01:23:24Reminiscent of a lot of New Zealand moves.
01:23:27Craig Innes' magic on that same sort of move.
01:23:29Held up and then coming back on the cut.
01:23:32But what a lovely pass too.
01:23:34To give them that space and width.
01:23:36So there were men up before they even moved.
01:23:38That's what made it easier.
01:23:39Just a beautiful pass.
01:23:40Again from Francesc Gatto.
01:23:43Put them outside for the second half.
01:23:45They had men to burn.
01:23:46That's why it was hard to defend.
01:23:49Francesc Gatto passed.
01:23:50Lovely passing.
01:23:51Francesc Gatto passed to Dominguez.
01:23:52Who passed to Gaitaniello?
01:23:53Who scored it?
01:23:54Dominguez goaled it.
01:23:5527-9.
01:23:59And that's five kicks out of five for Diego Dominguez.
01:24:02They're pleased to have him in the Italian team.
01:24:05The former Argentinian Puma player.
01:24:08Up goes Kevin Swords and Tony Ridnell.
01:24:17He penalised them for flipping him.
01:24:20For tipping him in the air.
01:24:22Means he flipped him up.
01:24:24And he's got a penalty.
01:24:26It's a penalty.
01:24:27It's not a penalty.
01:24:28It's a penalty.
01:24:29It's a penalty.
01:24:30It's not a penalty.
01:24:31It's a penalty.
01:24:32It's not a penalty.
01:24:33It's not a penalty.
01:24:34It's not a penalty.
01:24:35means he flipped him up and he landed down on his back and boy oh boy does
01:24:40that knock the wind out of you
01:24:45it constitutes dangerous play and I couldn't agree more with Mr. Doyle
01:24:53there he is Jim Bautista Kochi from Milano just a young man 24 I think he
01:25:04is outstanding in the Rugby World Cup qualifying last year they just found
01:25:09him apparently put him in the team took a bit of a gamble got him in lovely kick
01:25:14again Stephen Hilditch has got his flag up
01:25:22it's the two Irish refereeing representatives here Stephen Hilditch
01:25:31and Owen Doyle just to check of the time that Hilditch is keeping about three
01:25:35minutes to play the game is safely there for the Italians at 27 to 9
01:25:43Pavetta is offside
01:25:53I think there was rather a consolation penalty I think the Doyle might have been
01:25:57nice to the Americans there Paoli takes it up Kochi has it now
01:26:05Francis got a lovely long pass again to Dominguez long ball this time to
01:26:09Troiani Gaitanielo he's got Stefano Barber, Marcello Cutita
01:26:14the flashing feet oh only a good tackle by Kevin Higgins stopped him he's got
01:26:19real gas but they caught him Marcello Cutita what a shame that in this score
01:26:25line of 27 to 9 he's hardly had any running chances
01:26:30they're not giving him much space so the Gaitanielo played very well there he
01:26:34came back as you notice to unload to give him a bit of room to move not quite
01:26:39enough loose pass touchdown by Gary Hein well the Americans will not be
01:26:49very happy at all they pass that one back behind the goal and it's a five
01:26:52meter scrum now the Italians with their back line here they could construct a
01:26:56set move to make another try they look that much that much more superior in the
01:27:00back set Francisco Chichinado is the number eight forward the scrum has gone
01:27:10too far back I think they've been over coach what are they doing with this back
01:27:15set like that instead of backs like that going for the pushover well I think they
01:27:19reckon they've had enough it's time for a forwards to pick it up captain will
01:27:23obviously be in the forwards as he is well I would say if they got it out to
01:27:27his back line of Barba Gaitanielo Vaccari who scored a try Marcello
01:27:31Cuccino not to mention Francisco himself they might get a try
01:27:35Chichinado is holding it under his feet again
01:27:44penalty from the scrum to Italy Zanon is discussing the possibilities here
01:27:52they want it taken back Francisco oh it's going to be a move with a lot of
01:28:01players with their backs to the opposition we've got to get it
01:28:06organized they've been watching their videotapes let's see what happens
01:28:12into the big go Flanker Saetti
01:28:20another penalty for Italy time is ticking out running up to 40 minutes now
01:28:27and they're gonna have a shot at goal settle it down and clinch the game or
01:28:32add further points to the game it's a it's a wonder they don't go for the
01:28:36trial because tries can count to get through to the second round in certain
01:28:40situations that's what I'd be going for and as it's not going to be tight I
01:28:43wouldn't say New Zealand and England would be well and truly favorites to go
01:28:47through they've got to get that really got to get into two tries well they've
01:28:53scored tries by Barba Francescato Vaccari and Gaitanielo and what a
01:28:58marvelous a try it was by Ivan Francescato Diego Dominguez hasn't
01:29:03missed one yet he's kicked superbly time is up on the
01:29:07clock Diego Dominguez through it goes for 30 points to nine and six kicks out
01:29:15of six the game is over the Italians are delighted they have
01:29:20emphatically turned back the American challenge by 30 to 9 here in Auckland
01:29:25listen to their applause ringing around the ground
01:29:32the first international ever held on this ground and the Italians have turned
01:29:37it on I think the Americans were favored to win and so that constitutes an upset
01:29:42not a major upset but a definite and wide margin on the scoreboard favored
01:29:48the Italians and they look good all the way there's Paolo Vaccari
01:29:52who scored one of the tries swapping with Eric
