00:00:00three indicates the start of this match here England playing from right to left
00:00:04in the first half
00:00:15and immediately played a restart from the 22 and an Italian player head of the
00:00:20ball
00:00:24challenge just a little too impetuous really fired up and keen to get into this
00:00:28match but they have presented the Englishman with a very good attacking
00:00:31opportunity in the first 60 minutes of the match the Italian pack 22 grams 22
00:00:38kilograms heavier than the English team so they have an advantage of nearly three
00:00:41kilograms per man but just how good is their technique
00:00:49big blind here for the English bats if they wanted Hill that's where he's gone
00:00:53Gus got standing off no way through there for Richard Hill Peter Winderbottom
00:00:59carries it on but the ball is hit the deck and it's there again for Richard
00:01:03Hill chipping over the top awkward one for the Italians Jonathan Webb keeps the
00:01:12ball in play just inside the Italian half I think they might have been a late
00:01:17tackle on Jonathan Webb
00:01:28and that was a foolish piece of play there from Petita Marcello Petita who
00:01:34came in and shouldered Weber after he'd kicked the ball and it's presented the
00:01:37English fullback with an opportunity to kick the goal one thing I've noticed
00:01:41already Brendan is that Rory Underwood and Chris Oatey have swapped wings last
00:01:45Thursday against the All Blacks Chris Oatey was on the left wing and Rory
00:01:48Underwood was on the right it's been no secret that Rory Underwood has always
00:01:52preferred the left and I saw for instance from that that right hand move
00:01:56there that Chris Oatey was on the right wing so I don't know whether Rory
00:01:59Underwood was pulling rank or whether they're going to move more to the left
00:02:01than they are to the right but it's interesting to see that they've changed
00:02:06Jonathan Webb who you will remember kicked an early penalty against the All
00:02:17Blacks five days ago to give England the start they wanted that day can he do it
00:02:21again today and the roar from the big crowd behind the stand at the far end
00:02:27tells you that Jonathan Webb has landed his first penalty goal and after just
00:02:31three minutes of play England ahead by three points to nil exactly the same as
00:02:36on Thursday England were ahead after a couple of minutes again for ironically a
00:02:41late tackle when Michael Jones I think tackled Jon Webb at the same time so it's
00:02:44ironic that England have got a good start on both occasions for exactly the
00:02:48same reason
00:02:52Dominguez restarts play for Italy kicks to his opposite number Rob Andrew 15
00:02:57meters from his own line Rob Andrew who seems to be one kicker here at this
00:03:03World Cup that genuinely seems to enjoy particularly punting this plastic ball
00:03:13Anderson calling for the gap between the two sets of forwards a couple of meters
00:03:19inside the English half on this calm overcast day here in the British capital
00:03:27taken in the middle of the line out by Mike Teague for England
00:03:34Andrew on his own 10-meter line he's kept the ball in play in not a bad kick
00:03:43from Rob Andrew the Italians under pressure inside their own 22 they looked
00:03:47a little frantic but they cleared it well enough
00:03:54but in fact Brian Anderson is awarded a penalty to Italy for a
00:04:01late tackle and the English prop forward Jason Leonard had been penalized
00:04:09there for that unnecessary shove on the Italian fullback after in fact he kicked
00:04:18the touch so a late penalty apiece and the Englishman still ahead by three
00:04:23points to nil
00:04:26Redmond and Dooley in the short line out but the big Italian crotchie coming
00:04:35through he's been penalized
00:04:41and England decide from even inside the Italian half that they won't kick the goal
00:04:45they take the tap Richard Hill handles it well
00:04:48Winderbottom standing off the quick hands to Carling Guscott weathers up
00:04:52from fullback as well and Rory Underwood does get an early touch brushes
00:04:56off two men there we see the lethal impact of Rory Underwood he really had
00:05:02very little room to work in but still managed to make something absolutely
00:05:07right and it's lovely to see him get an early touch with one thing you can't do
00:05:10in this game is defend against pace and this guy's got plenty of it I can assure
00:05:13you of that
00:05:20I see the middle of the English line out marking Roberto Cabarro's thrown short
00:05:28sure whether they'd necessarily travel five meters
00:05:34the English forwards start to roll but the Italians managed to recover the ball
00:05:39and just after manages to get a skip but it hasn't found touch the ball went forward
00:05:48and coming off an English hand it's the Italians that received the loose end
00:05:53meanwhile has been a knock to Mike Teague it looks like it's his left shoulder that
00:06:01is causing him some concern judging by the
00:06:06look on his face
00:06:11Mike Teague will certainly want to carry on it's his birthday today I understand
00:06:15so we're looking to celebrate it in good fashion
00:06:18he's had an up-and-downs for the year Mike Teague hasn't really produced the form
00:06:23from the Lions tour last year really but there we see the knock forward and
00:06:27Jason Leonard trying to gather it in but gone forward
00:06:33some concern here for Mike Teague the English loose forward is Brian Anderson
00:06:41the referee 32 years of age today the man from Gloucester Mike Teague
00:06:55after some anxious discussion with the British physio the English physio he's
00:06:59in fact they've decided to continue
00:07:05not straight says Brian Anderson England received the free kick on the
00:07:10Italian 22
00:07:17Brian Moore standing off the ruck still on the 22 the Englishman unable to make
00:07:22any penetration here but the Italians penalized for going over the top this
00:07:26should be another three points for Jonathan Webb
00:07:37calling
00:07:40indicating to where he indeed wants him to kick the goal he van Francis Gatto
00:07:46this elusive little Italian halfback who scored that stunning try against the
00:07:50United States with the Georgie best looks
00:07:57with three penalties against the All Blacks in the opening match for England
00:08:04one so far today
00:08:1225-meter kick
00:08:19two out of two for the English surgeon and fullback at Jonathan Webb and the
00:08:23home team ahead by six points to nil and we've had seven minutes of play
00:08:29ideal start for England really they've kept Italy pinned right back into their
00:08:33own half and it's just the start they wanted as I say and England can just
00:08:38play the same pattern and I'm sure the gaps will open up shortly as you see
00:08:41there Roger Utley on the left the coach and Jeff Cook the manager on the right
00:08:48Diego Dominguez this Italian the Italian first 5-8 the Argentinian born
00:08:53Italian first 5-8 kicks deep but Rob Andrew gets his kick away
00:09:02from the first eight minutes of play I don't think we've seen the ball in the
00:09:06set-piece inside the English 22 so territorial advantage in the opening ten
00:09:10minutes of the match to England
00:09:14although the Italians have managed to get inside the English 22 here it's the
00:09:18English forwards that have it and Mike Teague who doesn't seem to be showing any
00:09:21effects from that injury Nigel Redman Brian Moore up to halfway and the
00:09:30Italian forwards diving in again not staying on their feet
00:09:42not retiring 10 meters quick enough and so the Englishman benefit from that
00:09:46still not interested in kicking for gold from inside the 10 meter line they want
00:09:50to move it showing a lot more willingness to move the ball today Webb
00:09:53again to Rory Underwood back inside to Carling Peter Wunderbottom only a
00:10:01couple of meters short Guscott he's getting plenty of work in the first 10
00:10:04minutes probably more than he got in 80 minutes last Thursday refreshing sign
00:10:09Jamie Sandler absolutely and what's also refreshing is the handling is good the
00:10:13actual passing is good it's going right to the player concerned and the guys
00:10:16outside like Guscott and Underwood who've got good pace are actually
00:10:20meeting the ball at pace which is so critical
00:10:29well there's lots of options on here for the English backs with a blind of about
00:10:3325 meters and look there's no one home Rory Underwood
00:10:46Rory Underwood gets his 29th try in Test Match Rugby that equals the number
00:10:52scored by John Kirwan and he now becomes the third highest scorer of tries in
00:10:57Test Match Rugby a big hole on the blind side Richard Hill was quick to exploit
00:11:02it wasn't such a great pass to Rory Underwood he had to check his stride but
00:11:06he had enough strength and momentum to carry him to the line yeah simple move
00:11:10really once the halfback goes into Dean Richards that is a two-on-one and Rory
00:11:14Underwood against the fullback coming across there's really no contest there
00:11:17and it'll do Rory Underwood a lot of good to get a touchdown in this World Cup
00:11:20and now with England ten points up it should have really set the pattern for
00:11:25the rest of the game and their confidence should be back in hand now
00:11:28the passing as I say has been very good as is the handling
00:11:34Webb with his third shot at goal this afternoon a superstar by the English
00:11:45fullback superstar by the English team they lead by 12 points to nil the fans
00:11:50love it and we've only had 12 minutes of play
00:11:52flight lieutenant Rory Underwood getting the first try of the match in the 10th
00:11:57minute of play Richard Hill setting it up for Underwood one-on-one competition
00:12:02contest there and as Jacqui Salmon said really no contest at all from just ten
00:12:06meters from the line when Underwood got the ball
00:12:12the Italians for a change kick short but the ball has gone loose but I think it
00:12:16may have been knocked forward there by an Englishman Peter Winterbottom to pick
00:12:23up the loose ball come off of one of his teammates arms and so the Italians on the
00:12:30set-piece inside the English half
00:12:36Francescato elects not to pass and all those Italian forwards are offside up
00:12:44inside the 10-meter circle look of surprise on the face of their captain
00:12:48Gianni Zanon
00:12:53England very keen to play this match at pace
00:13:00it's interesting to note already that England haven't taken one kick to touch
00:13:04outside their 22 something they did rather too much last Thursday when they
00:13:08weren't getting the lineouts late on in the game
00:13:11Oh
00:13:26controlled at the back by Dean Richards and trouble again for the Italian full-back
00:13:33Luigi Troiani he had about three Englishmen arriving at him the moment
00:13:38the ball did and he probably did reasonably well considering the odds
00:13:41were very much against him there
00:13:45great kick by Richard Hill absolutely precise kick I know team Carling hit the
00:13:50ball back straight away so England again where they've been for most of the first
00:13:5815 minutes of this match inside the Italian half they lead by 12 points to
00:14:02nil
00:14:08you see that Dean Richards is hardly bothering to pack down he's just really
00:14:14hanging on it looks that they could go blind again
00:14:19now he's but the back pass to Mike Teague has come off the side of the
00:14:25scrum after the ball have been hooked the Italians again penalized this time
00:14:31that was their big lock forward Roberto Favara who was offside and what is
00:14:37Colin going to do here this is I imagine within the range of Jonathan
00:14:41where but a couple of times this afternoon inside the Italian half the
00:14:44Englishman has decided not to kick the goal or the touch for that matter at
00:14:47this time where we'll in fact endeavor to increase the English jelly by a
00:14:52further three points absolutely right decision of only 12 points up the games
00:14:57only sort of 10 15 minutes old there's no point going you know too crazy too
00:15:02early and if you can get 15 on the board then 18 then you can play the pretty
00:15:06stuff a bit later on and I think cuttings done exactly the right thing to
00:15:10do especially given the good kicking form that Jonathan Webb has shown at the
00:15:17World Cup three out of three so far today
00:15:23make that four out of four well he doesn't seem to be having any problems
00:15:28with the plastic ball for very good kicks today from Jonathan Webb and
00:15:32England maintaining this hectic scoring pace 13 minutes of play 15 points they
00:15:37lead by
00:15:50this is just the start that the Englishman wanted
00:15:57Jonathan Webb with 11 points so far from the first 15 minutes or so of this match
00:16:03as a Rob Andrew again the sonification of reliability wearing the number 10
00:16:09jersey for England making his touch midway 22 and half way
00:16:18Italians trying to vary their line our tactics but it doesn't work Peter
00:16:22Winterbottom takes it to Gus Scott who took the pass well looking for some
00:16:26support finds it in the form of winter bottom again who rolls over it and the
00:16:29Italian forwards killing the ball
00:16:49no sign of it coming out of there says Brian Anderson and so we'll have this
00:16:54ground
00:17:04one of the Italians I think has suffered a knock and so a chance for the English
00:17:09forwards to have a spell this match has been played at a pretty hectic pace the
00:17:14Englishman showing a willingness on every opportunity to run the ball
00:17:24Massimo Katucci the twin brother of their exciting winger Marcello Katucci
00:17:29but interesting the Lothar twins he's 26 kilograms heavier than his brother
00:17:34there he is out there on twin brother out there on the left wing
00:17:41the move spent much of their life in South Africa where they learnt their
00:17:45rugby born in Italy and the parents immigrated to Durban when they were just
00:17:50a couple of years old where they spent the next best part of the next 20 years
00:17:54but have been back in Italy for the last six or seven years and myself a
00:17:58competitor one of the stars in fact of the 1987 World Cup in New Zealand
00:18:09the word from Brian Moore he wants the pack to drive
00:18:21off the back comes Mike Teague steps out of one tackle takes play up over the
00:18:38advantage line but now can they win it for the English backs coming back there
00:18:42on the English side right on halfway for Richard Hill standing off was Dean
00:18:46Richards long sure pass Andrews, Carling, Webb, Guscott, Guscott slips out of one
00:18:55tackle, Winderbottom trying to find Carling who was looming up there on the
00:19:00right wing but he couldn't free his pass to his captain it's again controlled by
00:19:07the English forwards Mike Teague having a very good game in the number six jersey
00:19:10for England today again tidying up the loose ball
00:19:19certainly a quick game and I think that's to England's advantage it was
00:19:23interesting that they had Mike Teague at number eight position of that previous
00:19:26scrum to make sure they were at the game line because Doc Richards is great strength
00:19:32Andrew misses out Carling, Rory Underwood again Jonathan Webb misdirected pass to his
00:19:42captain and the Italians are able to clear well I suppose when you're moving
00:19:47the ball at the pace of the English backs are Jamie you must inevitably
00:19:51expect the odd pass to go astray absolutely first mistake they've made
00:19:54John Webb could have given it a fraction earlier Carling was in position the man
00:19:58on Webb was already committed so well we could have given it a bit earlier but
00:20:02good handling again and the passing is good as in front of the oncoming players
00:20:06which is the key and Italy have been totally shut out here at the moment
00:20:11look on the face of John Battista Croci the lock forward Nigel Redmond
00:20:17already showing the battle wounds from the first 20 minutes of this match another
00:20:22superb take more good ball here for Richard Hill
00:20:29not quite sure what Rob Andrew was intending to do there however it's not a
00:20:33bad kick after all that as it's well taken down by Will Carling but the pass
00:20:38bouncing out of the arms of Jeremy Guscott and so we'll come back for the
00:20:44knock on
00:20:52hasn't really fired yet Chris Oatey since he came back from a major injury last
00:20:55year was a police tendon I don't know why it is he's lost a yard of pace that's
00:21:00for sure but he needs a real confidence boost he does it was also interesting
00:21:04that the previous line up Paul Ackford's jumping in the middle for England where
00:21:07Wade Dooley normally does it's not a big blow with Dooley being out because Ackford
00:21:12jumps for his club Harlow Quinn's in the middle of the line out so it's not
00:21:15exactly a foreign position to him so one of the Italian forwards requiring some
00:21:21stitching to a cut being inspected by the match doctor meanwhile the scrum goes
00:21:26down the Italians playing with 14 men at the moment but they receive a free kick
00:21:31for an incorrect feed there by the English halfback
00:21:36the chance for the Italian backs to move the ball Francesco across to Vicari
00:21:46on the right wing not a bad kick from Paul Vicari way back the way underneath
00:21:49it took it well didn't flinch Paul over Cardi there he is the man with the curly
00:21:56hair in fact was chosen as a fullback playing on the right wing today which
00:21:59probably explained why that kick was such a well-judged one but first real
00:22:06time that Jonathan Webb has been tested at fullback for England today in defense
00:22:09and he took it well
00:22:1528 year old Barth fullback had a marvellous start to this match with 11
00:22:21points from the first 25 minutes of play
00:22:28Massimo Petito at the front of the line out there for Italy and tidy ball this
00:22:31time for Richard Hill now the English forwards managed to tidy it up and Andrew
00:22:39again seeing those Italian backs up very flat decides to kick deep but this
00:22:43time he's given Troiani the Italian fullback a little more time but Troiani
00:22:47seemed to be caught in two minds there and by that time the English loose
00:22:50forwards had arrived there and the inexperience of Troiani there at this
00:22:55level of rugby evident there
00:23:02nice to see England chasing the big kicks good kick to provide roof five
00:23:06yards outside the 22 not a lot of fullback can do with with it interesting
00:23:10to see Jason Leonard one of the first arriving do so prop which is good news
00:23:14for him again for some support and just the site he wanted to see Peter Wynne of
00:23:23bottom following up on the inside he'll again able to find that long pass to
00:23:27Andrew Carling with the quick hands but again Chris Odie out there on the right
00:23:33wing coming in he's a big strapping fellow all of 15 stone but weights not
00:23:38much used to if your hands are letting you down
00:23:42essentially again this this new idea they've got of Mike Teague playing at
00:23:46eight and picking the ball out the back of the scrum quickly and early and
00:23:50getting across the game line it's something they've not done before when
00:23:53Dean Richards have been in the side as we see the replay of the ruck here and
00:23:57presumably the Italian backs of offside as England go they're right when Chris
00:24:01Odie is having problems with the hands it's not a bad pass from Carling at all
00:24:05it's certainly very catchable from an international winger's point of view no
00:24:08advantage there to England so the referee bringing them back for the
00:24:11penalty another chance for Webb
00:24:19five out of five so far today for Jonathan Webb and England increase their
00:24:25lead to 18 points to nil a man whose career looked to be all but over this
00:24:31level of play earlier this year when Simon Hodgkinson was doing wondrous deed
00:24:35particularly with his goal-kicking for England in the five nations championship
00:24:38but it's funny how things can change here he is back slotting them with the
00:24:42same sort of pinpoint accuracy that took Simon Hodgkinson to a five nations
00:24:46championship record earlier this year
00:24:51ball popping back on the Italian side rare ball for the Italians as they slip
00:24:55it to their big lock forward crotchy up to the 22 good ball here for the Italian
00:24:59backs Francis Gardo Dominguez the Italians were going forward and so they
00:25:08do receive the opportunity here to feed the scrum Diego Dominguez the former
00:25:16Puma now playing for his adopted homeland Italy
00:25:22you
00:25:27not much room there for the Italians but they managed to make five or ten meters
00:25:31up over the advantage line and they win another scrum
00:25:5225 minutes of play have gone in the first half here at Twickenham as Peter
00:25:57Winderbottom appears to be receiving some attention for a knock and England
00:26:02ahead by 18 points to nil this is technically 25 minutes to get
00:26:08anywhere near a decent scoring position which they have now their own put-in
00:26:11just inside the England 22 this is the penalty here or the knock-on rather I
00:26:17should say for the scrummage but I think as they go down to ground there Italy
00:26:21you've got to be careful they go over the top they'd look at them there's all
00:26:24two three four players straight over the top and referees are going to blow that
00:26:28and give penalties against them if they're not careful the knock on
00:26:31probably save that happening on that occasion but that's just the sort of
00:26:34thing that referees have been told to be very very strict about during this World
00:26:38Cup and the incoming players and forwards on a rock or more must stay on
00:26:42their feet at all costs well we haven't seen the penalty count yet but I would
00:26:47imagine it's probably something like about seven or eight to one at the
00:26:49moment in favor of England and most of those penalties have in fact been for
00:26:53killing the ball or going over the top and the fact that Jonathan Webb has been
00:26:57able to kick four penalties in the first 25 minutes is a graphic and
00:27:01illustration of how often the Italians have been offending in that area of play
00:27:05but now they have a chance to see what they can do on attack inside the English
00:27:1122 the little chip ahead for Vacardi not a bad little kick but again Jonathan
00:27:17Webb my goodness he's having a very good game as he did against the All Blacks
00:27:21last Thursday he looks slightly frail rather in the mold of Terry Wright but
00:27:26as in the case of Terry Wright it can be deceptive
00:27:31Redman and Paul Ackford swap positions Redman coming in towards the middle of the
00:27:52lineup but it's Mike Teague who was in front of him he's winning a lot of
00:27:55ball for England today so does John Webb who was talking about playing for
00:28:05about the other day talking about having good and bad days and it's just like
00:28:08being a surgeon well I hate to be the patient if that's the case
00:28:12Jonathan Webb is a surgeon
00:28:25and an enormous amount of height on that ball again giving the English forwards
00:28:30and backs time to get underneath it and they've won it again it's been charged
00:28:34down a chance here for the Italians Oh Diego Dominguez with the line open but
00:28:42he knocked it forward no one to beat but the wretched bounce of the ball deceived
00:28:49to the Italian and the Englishman can breathe again
00:29:01bad luck for Dominguez the ball was bouncing high enough for him to probably
00:29:08do the right thing there and attempt to pick it up it was bouncing a little too
00:29:11high for him to realistically try and tow it ahead but just as he went to pick
00:29:15it up the bounce eluded him
00:29:29which shoved from the Italian pack
00:29:36the Italians have been penalized a little half back for picking the ball
00:29:40out of the scrum he was keen he could see the line and the ball all within a
00:29:45meter
00:29:47there was the try that went begging for Dominguez back I think it looked like it
00:29:53was his teammate that knocked the ball down just as he was different to pick it
00:29:56up himself
00:30:04so from the penalty Rob Andrew was found touched 10 meters inside the Italian
00:30:09half as crotchy wins line out ball for the Italians
00:30:13Francescato gets his pass away Gattuto does standing out there in the middle of
00:30:18the back line not far from his brother
00:30:21there's a line of a blue jerseys here opportunity here for the Italians but
00:30:26Rob Andrew the good smothering tackle and the English forwards getting him
00:30:32behind Rob Andrew after he'd made the tackle marching the Italians back
00:30:35towards their own goal line and they received the loose head ten minutes of
00:30:40play remaining in the first half
00:30:45England with just the one try but ahead by 18 points to nil
00:30:58Andrew again getting plenty of dip from that kick inside his own 22
00:31:05there was going to be a slight drop in the England standard at some stage
00:31:10during this half they can't play the whole game like they have played the
00:31:13first 20 minutes Italians encouraged by the last couple of lineouts off their
00:31:19own throws which they've won with the short lineouts up for that again but
00:31:23this time the ball bounces back on the English side and once more the Italians
00:31:27indicated there by Brian Anderson you've got to stay on your feet penalized
00:31:31again
00:31:41they're not forward crotchy suffered a blow the full force of Jeff probing on
00:31:51his on his right knee and Jeff probing once he gets settled doesn't move from
00:31:54anything there is one of them seem to be an increasingly large number of players
00:32:00in international rugby especially here at the World Cup they don't have much
00:32:03hair on their head 67 players playing in this World Cup who you'd have to
00:32:11describe virtually four and crotchy is one of them
00:32:19England forwards going in again with plenty of commitment up towards the
00:32:22Italian 22 talking of poor cloud burn they should go and see did he a come
00:32:29about a barrel the Irish fly half who who runs his own hair restoring company
00:32:33so he's worked for him and a few others are here so perhaps he's got a bit of
00:32:36business later on the competition he can sort out yes I notice convertible oh he
00:32:40hasn't put a hair out of place since he appeared at the World Cup in 1987 with
00:32:44this immaculately groomed to pay or his wig
00:32:50it's all right for forwards to show the importance is away comes T to win a
00:32:56bottom and again the Italian players impeding access to the ball and some of
00:33:03those English forwards getting a little frustrated
00:33:08Jason Leonard the youngster mixing it with one of the Italian forwards the
00:33:15Englishman meanwhile have received a penalty for the Italians killing the
00:33:18ball again and this should be another simple kick for Jonathan Webb
00:33:27in fact he's changed his mind or in fact he's awarded the penalty there for
00:33:31Italy penalizing Leonard for retaliation after the whistle had gone so I'm sure
00:33:37would have been three certain points gone begging there for England in the 32nd
00:33:42minute of the first half
00:33:49now it's England's turn to revert to the shortened lineup
00:33:56and tidy ball tap back there by Dean Richards Hill manages to recover it for
00:34:00England inside the Italian half England with just the one try so far from this
00:34:05first 30 minutes of the match
00:34:13this time Brian Anderson has penalized the Italians for collapsing the mall
00:34:20and what is will calling this idea no they're gonna kick it again tap kick it
00:34:26and run
00:34:30him to calling again he sees a little half gap calling waits for the support
00:34:37from window bottom up to the 22 Nigel Redmond carries it on freed now for
00:34:45long pass looking for the open spaces web across the underwood he's got a bit
00:34:49of room just got steps out of one tackle just got waiting for the support
00:34:55Jonathan Webb is there kept alive by underwood Andrew they're running across
00:35:00the field somewhere they've got to straighten it up
00:35:02OT not running with a lot of conviction
00:35:08well they've gone across the field and back again but really they've made very
00:35:13little room up the field so for the third phase they try it again
00:35:16calling trying to straighten it up better stuff from the English captain
00:35:20this time
00:35:25and once again those Italian forwards have been penalized
00:35:32this this time it was their hooker Giancarlo Pavetta killing the ball a lot
00:35:39of energy wasted there by the English backs the England forwards and they get
00:35:45enormously frustrated with their Italian counterparts they carry on doing this
00:35:48it comes a stage where you say enough is enough because they're killing an awful
00:35:53lot of the ball and it was good continuity play by England there they
00:35:57kept the ball in hand and here we see now the game declining the penalty but
00:36:02the kicker gala should I say
00:36:09hit by 18 points to know looking for the six-pointer as it were they want
00:36:13another try before halftime as they flick it out on the short side to Mike
00:36:17take what a wonderful game he's having this afternoon he's looking for OT but
00:36:20there's no room for the English wing out there the ball has gone forward this
00:36:26time the Englishman have been penalized for killing the ball going over the top
00:36:34we thought the English team knew was gonna go blind to Mike Teague and yet
00:36:38he lacked for support out there which is criminal really well the only man
00:36:43that he had near him was OT who was behind him virtually standing on the
00:36:46touchline
00:36:53one more try for England in this half would call this game off and meet
00:36:57England going into the break with a with a huge advantage and then they can
00:37:00really throw it about the second half and get the hands going and some real
00:37:03confidence in the backs at 37 minutes of play in the first half but we've also
00:37:08had two or three minutes lost for injuries so the Englishman have probably
00:37:12the best part of five minutes and here's another penalty and Brian Anderson who
00:37:18himself I think is getting frustrated with these Italians having told them at
00:37:22least a dozen times today so far that they're killing the ball and this time
00:37:27calling has indicated he would like with the kick the goal
00:37:35as you say be brave to see what the penalty count is I mean Italy to a
00:37:39certain degree of cause their own downfall I mean the penalties they can
00:37:44write and poor Brian Anderson I mean no referee likes to give away penalty after
00:37:49penalty and Brian Anderson the referee has been left with no option at all but
00:37:53to penalize the Italians time and time again and of course now in this game
00:37:57Italy have been under so much more pressure than they were on Saturday
00:38:00against the USA and they're being found out technically
00:38:05you
00:38:15web hasn't missed one today he has now score remains at 18 points to know well
00:38:24if you'd probably taken every opportunity that he's had to kick the
00:38:27goal today Jonathan we'll be might well be up near his compatriot Simon
00:38:30Hodgkinson's world record of seven penalties in a match from the restart
00:38:38Rob Andrew the back to his fullback web doing it well pushing it back to Dean
00:38:49Richards carried on by Jason minute up to the 22
00:39:00this is the sort of position in England in the five nations championship in
00:39:04early games have been doing back row moves rather than give it to the backs
00:39:07they'll be interesting now to see what they do
00:39:13Jonathan Webb who has joined the English back line virtually every time it's
00:39:17traveled right along the chain this afternoon and he's lurking again out
00:39:20there outside Jeremy Guscock but plan has gone a little astray
00:39:23calling he's having a good game this afternoon will calling Jeremy Guscock it
00:39:28wasn't a particularly flash pass to Guscott and he had to try and pull it
00:39:32in lost it forward Guscus claiming he was tackled without the ball it's a good
00:39:39defense in the end they're possessed by the carry here to mark Jeremy Guscott on
00:39:43the outside there
00:39:46Oh
00:39:56even less than 20 meters from the Italian line it's timely possession one
00:40:03by the Italians but they haven't really achieved much with it England again with
00:40:07their own throat
00:40:17very much the senior lieutenant in the English line out this afternoon with
00:40:22Wade Dooley having to pull out because of an injury it's gone deep but it's
00:40:29been won by the Italians
00:40:33across to Stefano Barber who's kicked it deep and into touch as well
00:40:4525 year old from the Milano Cup the champion Italian club in fact he's got
00:40:51five of his teammates from Milano in the side this afternoon Stefano Barber
00:40:55playing it inside center
00:41:03John Battista Crocci marking Nigel Redman
00:41:11Francesc Gatto he was able to punch a few holes from running around in front of
00:41:17the line out against the Americans earlier in the week but not today
00:41:22England take the quick throw in calling again he's carving up the Italian
00:41:28midfield this afternoon Guscott he's away
00:41:33well the English fans I'm sure have waited throughout 1991 to see that
00:41:43lethal combination of Carling and Guscott showing what they can do that
00:41:48was a marvelous piece of work between the two of them it was Carling that
00:41:51started it just got that finished it and the Englishman are ahead by 22 to nil
00:41:57once he got the ball 30 meters from the line Guscott was able to do it and he
00:42:02didn't even have to reach top gear what a marvelous game Will Carling's having
00:42:07this afternoon Jamie Salmon absolutely he's put his thumb right on this game
00:42:13now the two points for Jonathan Webb 24 to nil that's the sound of halftime
00:42:17Guscott he got the try but really it was Will Carling that deserves the credit
00:42:23absolutely right and also credit to to Brian Moore and Jeff Proven at the front
00:42:28the line up the quick line out throw the second half for this pull one match
00:42:34at Twickenham between England and Italy is underway the home side ahead by 24
00:42:39points to nil two tries in the first half 16 points from the boot of Jonathan
00:42:43Webb and England turning in one of their best performances in 1991 remember they
00:42:48are the European champions won the five nations and the Grand Slam earlier this
00:42:52year and putting their World Cup hopes back on target this afternoon with this
00:42:58very good performance the Italians symptomatic of their woes in the first
00:43:04half begin the second half by infringing or should I say by receiving a penalty
00:43:07this time the Englishman infected have been penalized for being offside
00:43:22so we start the seconds fell with an injury to one of the Italian players he
00:43:38doesn't look too well
00:43:53and as we wait for the match to resume an opportunity to welcome all our
00:43:58viewers in many different parts of the globe watching this sport this afternoon
00:44:03or watching this match this afternoon courtesy of television New Zealand
00:44:07Luigi Troiani astray with his kick badly astray in fact the crowd wanted the
00:44:14English backs to open it up
00:44:17the little fly half
00:44:22the linguists everywhere he looked he saw white jerseys and one of them in the
00:44:26finish couldn't resist the temptation but to tackle him up inside the ten
00:44:30meters they were penalized
00:44:47and the very powerful statement on the way this match is gone England virtually
00:45:0180% of the possession in the first half surprising that they're ahead by 24
00:45:05points on the scoreboard as that Jonathan Webb trying to chip the ball
00:45:10expertly into touch and that's exactly what he's done
00:45:15as the ball bounced almost at 90 degrees to the left I could hit the turf perfect
00:45:21kick from the boot of the English fullback and again an Italian player is
00:45:25down
00:45:29it might be the fullback
00:45:33you
00:45:41in fact he's leaving the field so that's an unfortunate way for the Italians to
00:45:47have to start the second half behind by 24 points
00:46:03just for the moment the Italians a man short
00:46:11Nigel Redmond front of the line out Paul Ackford in the middle behind him Mike
00:46:16Teague and it's Ackford and Teague again who combine barging in the line out says
00:46:21Brian Anderson penalty to the Italians
00:46:33that's the end of the afternoon unfortunately for Luigi Traiani their
00:46:44fullback suffered a knock in the first couple of minutes of the second spell
00:46:50injury obviously didn't get any better and so he's left the field
00:46:55Charlie nice pass Teague really is having a very strong game
00:47:01pass has gone astray knocked down by Guskett in fact it was Chris Oatey and
00:47:07the three has ruled that Oatey deliberately attempted to knock that
00:47:11ball to the ground as he went for the intercept penalty to the Italians
00:47:15Brian Moore rucking furiously and interestingly that Brian Anderson in
00:47:26fact gave showed some charity towards the Italians he was waiting to see if
00:47:30the ball in fact did come back it didn't and so he penalized them for
00:47:33killing the ball again. Winderbottom
00:47:38Carling again he's everywhere this afternoon Will Carling
00:47:48this time it's Roberto Favaro that's been penalized for going to ground again
00:47:53and what is Carling going to do here the placement coming on in the Italian
00:47:59team number 17 this is Guido Rossi
00:48:08from the boot of Rob Andrews coming down 10 meters short of the line
00:48:20obstruction by one of those
00:48:26one of those Italian forwards results in another penalty to England well they
00:48:30probably could be up around about 35 points ahead in this match if they take
00:48:33it all their penalty opportunities and kick the goal but to their credit they
00:48:37are endeavoring it to run it virtually at every opportunity now they are
00:48:40getting a feast of penalties Carling again can't stay out of the action this
00:48:44afternoon the charge from Jeff Probin
00:48:51this time it's the prop forward Frappuzzi Curti that's killed the ball
00:48:55and it's almost becoming a little bit farcical here with these Italian forwards
00:48:59who just don't seem to want to learn. Absolutely right I mean you'd have
00:49:03thought they'd learnt after 20 minutes of this match and still to find them
00:49:07after half time doing exactly the same things that Ryan Anderson has penalized
00:49:11them from all game and repeatedly so is quite suicidal whether he can speak
00:49:16Italian or not he can show them exactly what they're doing you'll see Jeff
00:49:19Probin goes down here and he's tackled him straight away the Italian that makes
00:49:23no effort to get back on side and indeed the other Italian comes straight in on
00:49:27the wrong side of the ball and there's no way you can get away with that and
00:49:30it's a penalty quite clearly this is Jeff Probin still down down injured and
00:49:36he certainly is a key man for England with his scrummaging ability a tight
00:49:40head prop. It looks like his bad knee too and it's not been the best to
00:49:48shape that knee for a couple of years. The 35 year old tight head prop in the
00:49:54English pack he's the the oldest member of the English team
00:50:07seven minutes of play in the second half of this match here at Twickenham the
00:50:10second of four matches that will be played here. If Paul Rendell here you see
00:50:19that comes on he'll be the oldest he's 37 now Paul Rendell we've got a few
00:50:23golden oldies in our squad at the moment and I don't think Jeff Probin
00:50:26want to come on and give Paul Rendell a run actually they're good muckers and
00:50:29good mates but Jeff Probin will get a lot of a lot of reminders if he gives
00:50:33Paul Rendell another cap at his age
00:50:39and what's the verdict on Probin he doesn't look too healthy and he's
00:50:44trudging off towards the touchline and so Jeff Probin looks as if he's going to
00:50:50leave the field and there's a big roar comes up for Paul Rendell this 37 year
00:50:54old
00:50:57it's gracious Jamie there's hope I think for guys like you and I still 37 years
00:51:00of age and about to play a World Cup fixture here at the headquarters at
00:51:05Twickenham big moment for Paul Rendell
00:51:11the Italians nothing to lose of course down by 24 points to no winning to run
00:51:16it from inside their 22 web nice pass Andrew just got again he's got room and
00:51:21he sees that gap look at the way he just glides through that gap just got that's
00:51:26the best try of the World Cup certainly the best we've seen at Twickenham he
00:51:30really is magic this man
00:51:38the epitome of grace and elegance set up from a lovely pass from Rob Andrew he
00:51:44saw the half gap and he was gone too much skill too much speed and too much
00:51:52grace for the Italians
00:52:0028 points to nil what a wonderful pass by John Webb that put Rob Andrew away
00:52:05and then once Guska gets it it's it's all over father shouting I mean he
00:52:09doesn't even bother to put in the left arm you know he's not interested in
00:52:12handing off people he just goes down the outside he's an American player but
00:52:16I tell you what on the field that's no bad thing
00:52:20web with a difficult conversion
00:52:25England had 30 for the day 18 points so far for Jonathan Webb as the England
00:52:33juggernaut continues with their third try today second for Jeremy Guscott 30
00:52:39points to nil well that really was worth the price of admission here at
00:52:45Twickenham today just to see that piece of magic from Jeremy Guscott
00:52:57and the big chair going up for Paul Rendell who at last is allowed on the
00:53:01field well in fact I don't think he is it looks like in fact the probing has
00:53:05come back on again the probing who left the field Randall who was all fired up
00:53:11to make his debut here at the World Cup in 1991 but probing decides he's fine
00:53:17and he's taken his place again in the English front row all render would not
00:53:22like taking his tracksuit off for his age having to put it back on again he
00:53:25would not be a happy man at all but it's dangerous policy I think if you're crook
00:53:30I think you should go off and stay off
00:53:35the back goes Johnny Zanon but he doesn't go very far the Italian captain
00:53:47tough day today for the 31 year old Italian captain from the Treviso Club
00:54:06on the field it might have been proven it was needing a little bit of attention
00:54:13again but play has continued off the back go the Italian back row but they
00:54:19don't make very much ground they wanted again for their little halfback
00:54:23Francesco trying to move the ball along the chain they do as far as Bacardo
00:54:28bumps off for Jeremy Guscott but the English lose forwards quickly wrap him
00:54:33up Rory Underwood probing down that left wing
00:54:40pushback by Jason Leonard coming through as Dean Richards Redmond Peter
00:54:48Winterbottom and it's a dangerous tackle on Robert Andrew just a shoulder shove
00:54:59into the little frame of Rob Andrew from the outside center for it the
00:55:04Italians this afternoon Fabio Jardinello tell you what the person Richard Hill
00:55:09gave the new meaning to the word hospital pass because I said I was right
00:55:12on him straight away and poor Rob Andrew will feel that for a few minutes and he
00:55:16is now quite interesting going back to Jeremy Guscott who's already announced
00:55:22that he would not play any domestic rugby after the Rugby World Cup as Paul
00:55:26Wendell we see now funny does come on the field
00:55:28Cuskin has decided he wants a complete rest from the game for in the World Cup
00:55:32it will not play five nations rugby any club property anything like that and of
00:55:36course the immediate reaction of everybody here in the UK that's with
00:55:39them here today was the fact that you know he was just getting the phone calls
00:55:43reading from the Rugby League boys up north and if that's the case he may have
00:55:46put a zero on the end of his feet today that's right I'm sure the empty has gone
00:55:50up in the last ten minutes
00:55:56you
00:56:01you see again glorious pass by John Webb beautiful movement which finished with
00:56:09the try from Jeremy Guscott they didn't even manage to get a hand on it
00:56:15he just glides around Guyton yellow and in a couple of meters from the corner
00:56:21if they do have a top try contest here at the World Cup I wouldn't think we'd
00:56:27see many individual tries better than that especially to a counter-attack to
00:56:31after after this this touch and it was really Marcelo Petito who missed the
00:56:37touch but it was the pass to me from John Webb to Rob Andrew that made it and
00:56:40as I've said before this today you can't you can't get it for real pace and
00:56:44Guscott's got it and so the dignity of cricket and insulted for the second time
00:56:49today the Mexican wave here at HQ meanwhile play restarts
00:56:59on the penalty the up and under but the ball not forward
00:57:06from the Italian arm
00:57:09the fantastic view you get from the back row of the new stand here at Twickenham
00:57:15huge stand which holds 11,000 spectators it gives you a fantastic view from nearly
00:57:23a hundred feet above the ground
00:57:29Teague again charging into the Italian inside backs
00:57:4515 minutes of play have gone in the second spell England and adding to their
00:57:49halftime score with a converted try beat by 30 points to nil
00:57:55this time it's Chris Odey crashing in from the wing Hill again manages to pick
00:58:19it up freeze it to Will Carling, Carling almost up for the 22 stopped by the
00:58:24Italian captain Zenon, Winderbottom, Paul Ackford
00:58:31Winderbottom again does well but as he manages to push it up Favaro the Italian
00:58:37lot takes the pass and Francesco and a real hash of it made by Diego Dominguez
00:58:44Dominguez inside his 22 not having a very happy day at all
00:58:51Diego Dominguez see the frustration etched on his face nothing's gone right for
00:58:57him today
00:59:00they've gone now I think I mean they really are struggling in all facets of
00:59:04the game and England could easily put another 20 points here
00:59:09the English fans all 50,000 of them urging on their team to score more
00:59:14points and there looks like there's more coming Richard Hurley had just gone
00:59:18outside of him why he didn't pass we'll never know
00:59:22Chris Odey in fact it was outside of him a gift try there gone begging
00:59:28absolutely right I mean he should have given the ball they've done the hard
00:59:32work they crossed the game line and Chris Odey I think a man who really needs the
00:59:36confidence to he he feels mortally wounded and as a person about the John
00:59:41Covington last week when he got handed off but as you see a good little
00:59:44intricate move here by the England guys and you'll see Otey right outside and
00:59:47nobody's gonna stop Otey. Otey's actually as it happens tackled off the ball but
00:59:51he would still would have got there and then England would penalize but it's that
00:59:55sort of finishing you've got to do to win World Cups. A quick tap and the
01:00:01English backs again in action Mike Teague trying to bust his way through in the
01:00:05midfield the ball has gone loose the Italians quick to speculate it
01:00:09speculated ahead and suddenly it's all on here for the Italians garden yellow
01:00:14across to Vaccaro desperate defense here by the Englishman the Italians move it
01:00:19wide Vaccaro again the ball has gone loose what's the referee say yes try
01:00:24Marcelo Katita picks up the loose ball the Italians on the break and they score
01:00:29their first points of the afternoon spectacular try 30 points to four
01:00:40Guyton Yellow who picked up the loose ball and the speed of Jeremy Guscott
01:00:44pulled him in however and looked as if it was going to die there for the
01:00:47Italians somehow they managed to keep the ball going
01:00:50Vaccaro freed it in the tackle then the pass went astray as Dominguez
01:00:56desperate attempt but he didn't roll the ball forward and good following up there
01:01:00by Katita sloppy play by England I mean it was really was sloppy play I mean
01:01:07fortunately he wasn't a total embarrassment to complete intercept
01:01:10because Guscott's got the pace to get back but shows what a predictor I am
01:01:14having just said the previous coming and we're gonna score another 20 points the
01:01:17rest of this half and the Italy were gone good good on them for coming back
01:01:21and finishing off this try and it'll give them obviously a bit of heart now
01:01:25for the rest of the game. Dominguez adds the two extra points it's 30 points to six
01:01:33well it was almost what you might call a 12-point try there England really should
01:01:37have gone in at the other end with Richard Hill and Chris Oatey but in fact
01:01:42it's the Italians from the ensuing passage of play that score at the other
01:01:45end so whereas it could have been 36 nil it in fact in fact is 30 to 6
01:01:55certainly give the Italians some heart it's been a tough afternoon for them
01:02:04here at Twickenham. The flag is up the Italian had stepped into touch on the
01:02:13right wing. England calling for the short line-out midway through the second spell
01:02:21one try apiece since halftime
01:02:26Brian Moore looking for Nigel Redman manages to get an arm to it
01:02:32Carling again waits for the big lumbering figure of Dean Richards
01:02:39familiar sight when the ball goes to ground Brian Anderson shaking his head
01:02:45disbelief at the constant willingness of the Italians to offend killing the ball
01:02:52again
01:02:55Mike Teague from the rolling mall going for England support there given by Peter Winterbottom
01:03:03he takes it from Teague trying to smash open the Italian mall across the Rory
01:03:10Underwood he hasn't seen much of the ball today Underwood well taken there by
01:03:13Rob Andrew Underwood again frees it to Richard Hill across to Richards as far
01:03:21as Will Carling
01:03:25Italians again caught offside they're inside backs
01:03:30England again taking the tap kick. Just got to Jonathan Webb he's got Odie outside of him
01:03:37but he doesn't need him
01:03:44that's 20 points today for the English fullback that's 34 points to 6 and again
01:03:50it was that man Guscott that played an influential part in that try
01:03:59taking the tap penalty restarting play very quickly Redman Guscott again
01:04:05slipping the pass to Jonathan Webb he did have Chris Odie outside of him but he
01:04:09broke through the first tackle made it to the tryline himself yeah a quick
01:04:14thank you by England again I mean they've got to run it I felt the referee could
01:04:17have played advantage from the previous run but nice to see people like Nigel
01:04:20Redman in there showing good hands good distribution
01:04:23Webb's got still got Guscott inside and Odie outside here and he gets in there
01:04:27in the kidneys first troubles as well
01:04:39Jonathan Webb who's only missed one ticket goal today as the England score
01:04:56continues to mount 36 points to 6 two converted tries since the break
01:05:03and again we see the try taken from the tap penalty taken by Richard Hill Guscott
01:05:12looked around quickly saw he had Webb and Odie outside of him Webb who decided
01:05:17to go on his own just like Richard Hill did a few moments ago but this time
01:05:20fortunately for England we've had enough momentum once the tackle had been made
01:05:23to make the tryline
01:05:33well to the credit of the Italians they certainly have been able to match the
01:05:56Englishman in this one facet of play
01:06:01which is no mean feat with some very good jumpers of course in this English
01:06:05line it okay they're missing way too early today but when felt that given the
01:06:09lack of height of the Italians that they'd get cleaned out here that hasn't
01:06:12in fact happened
01:06:17the English pack going forward will receive the pudding really has been a
01:06:23very enjoyable afternoon at rugby of rugby here at Twickenham
01:06:2936 to 6 England ahead we still have 15 minutes of the match to run
01:06:48Rob Andrew was fumbling the ball the referees playing advantage here for the
01:06:53Italians the tri-square cello Petita decides to have Chris Odie on
01:07:09I think Peter Winterbottom's had an outstanding game so far for England his
01:07:13work rate has been unbelievable and he's picked up his pace and even as we as we
01:07:17see here we continue to have you go on the outside from OT and Carling comes in
01:07:20here the next man in to pick up the ball outside that is Peter Winterbottom
01:07:24and that's super
01:07:31there was no advantage there for the Italian so we've come back from for the
01:07:35knock on by Rob Andrew the Italians again they've got very good hands the
01:07:41Italian back line I know how to move the ball quickly
01:07:43Zanon the captain having to recover the loose ball as the Italians again inside
01:07:49their own half a little chip over the top from barber Jonathan Webb just happy
01:07:57to nudge the ball into touch the Italians as close as they've been to the
01:08:04English goal line at any stage in the second half apart from when they scored
01:08:08that breakaway try
01:08:11Oh
01:08:17wasting no time and restarting play barber again kicking for open spaces but
01:08:23web has got it covered little too much depth on that kick and the English
01:08:27fullback although he didn't really take the kick as quickly as he might have
01:08:30done didn't find touch as a result as the tackle was partially made on him and
01:08:35the Italians with a chance here only 10 meters short of the line they can win it
01:08:40here an opportunity to see just what their backs can do Dominguez as he drifts
01:08:45away from the support
01:08:51this time Brian Anderson actually counts the number of Italians that have gone
01:08:54over he gave up after two or three but they were all in there diving over the
01:08:58loose ball and England again
01:09:03Richard Hill decides to take a break but the Brian Anderson wants play to continue
01:09:09even though there is a couple of Englishmen down with injuries Rob Andrew
01:09:17Peter went to bottom at the back is the Jamie salmon you see an outstanding game
01:09:21here today
01:09:25this man Jonathan way
01:09:40Oh
01:09:44Nigel Redman a study in concentration waiting for the throw of Brian Moore the
01:09:48Italians penalized in the lineup they lose forward at the back there Roberto
01:09:53safety it was who was penalized and to me once again having to trudge back 10
01:09:59meters very interesting indeed to see the penalty count in this match Rob
01:10:04Andrew keeping the ball in play coming down inside the English half who was it
01:10:10underneath it again that man winner bottom
01:10:14back to Dean Richards Richards just smashing his way through some weak
01:10:19Italian tackles again says Brian Anderson how many times do I have to
01:10:25tell you he says
01:10:28there will be a break here because the injured player is a little too close to
01:10:37the ball frustrating afternoon for Brian Anderson yes very much so because he is
01:10:46a is a referee that likes to play advantage he likes to see open rugby and
01:10:50it's disappointing for the crowd to that second phase for a wall from rocks and
01:10:55walls is critical to the backs because it's that that is when opposition backs
01:11:00are very out of position having made a tackle or whatever and that is where you
01:11:04can move the ball wide and underwood and OT get the necessary space to take on
01:11:07their respective opponents and it's been disappointing from the crowd point of
01:11:11view that Rory's had a quiet another quiet game really yes neither of the two
01:11:17English wings have seen much action in this game which has had a lot of
01:11:21movement
01:11:23considering the amount of ball that they've got it's perhaps surprising that
01:11:28underwood and OD haven't seen a little more of the action I don't think it's
01:11:32been for lack of trying it's just been for the frustration of the Italians and
01:11:35Jeremy Guskett wants to put a zero on his figures
01:11:44no strikes against the head so far in the match
01:11:49midway 22 and halfway as off goes Hill and Richards combining now Rory
01:11:53Underwood gets a chance but he really didn't have much opportunity there the
01:11:57cover defense was on and when he received the ball Hill again moving it
01:12:00quickly to Mike Teague he hasn't lost much in comparison with Peter Windervotton
01:12:04this afternoon either lost forward there by the Englishman the referee playing
01:12:09advantage for Italy is the little halfback Yvonne Francescato
01:12:14from a very narrow language narrow ango it's a good kick away
01:12:2524 to nilla was at halftime three tries in the second spell two to the home side
01:12:31and one to the Italians
01:12:44knock on by one of the Italian players in the lineup and England received a
01:12:53loose head just inside their own half
01:13:07well it certainly was a degree of criticism of over this English
01:13:12performance against the All Blacks last week but I know the All Blacks side
01:13:15certainly rates this English team I consider them to be a better side than
01:13:20perhaps a lot of people thought and they've shown here this afternoon that
01:13:24they are still very much a force to be reckoned with at this World Cup despite
01:13:28their loss here five days ago to New Zealand
01:13:32so he manages to keep the ball from disappearing over the touchline and now
01:13:41Richard Hill the entire width of the field to move as Jeremy Guscott again
01:13:45with some room out there Windervotton calling calling he might have to go on
01:13:50his own it is not much support for him but yes Richard gets there
01:13:57Dean Richards just a couple of meters short of the line didn't go the English
01:14:01forwards they must get penalized again
01:14:07we've got a few specs for his troubles too I think once again Richard Hill
01:14:11quick-thinking taking the tap penalty quickly trying to catch the Italian
01:14:15defense Windervotton again free to Carling not much of a pass Guscott
01:14:24Guscott manages to free at the tee and poor old Chris Odie he's had two or
01:14:30three opportunities potential opportunities out on the right wing in
01:14:34the second spell but they've all come to now
01:14:41start to feel sorry for Oti and Underwood they've had nothing really with a bit of
01:14:46space and England I think are now declining the penalty in midfield and
01:14:50electing to have a scrum instead they're not interested really in kicking three
01:14:53points looking now to do hopefully a decent move off the base and let's hope
01:14:57they come right and if they do so let's pray for Chris Odie that he gets a
01:15:01touch
01:15:04plenty of room for Odie on this near side that's where they're going Mike Teague
01:15:11Teague pushback for Richard Hill he's got Andrew outside of him and Odie as the
01:15:23penalties continued to flow against the Italians this time for offside
01:15:30Calvin coming in
01:15:36again he's called for the scrum I think that's a fair enough call from
01:15:43Carling really there's no point going for a charge five yards from the line or
01:15:47taking the kicker goal so I might as well have a set scrum and get some back
01:15:51play into it hopefully
01:15:55having said that it'll be just like England to go to a push over drive
01:16:11Hill across to Guscott Guscott there were two Englishmen on one Italian out
01:16:19there but the pass again was misdirected Chris Odie had come around from the
01:16:23right wing he wants to get amongst the try scoring action before this match is
01:16:27out
01:16:31you're on an awfully long way to get there too
01:16:37that's a poor pass by Guscott really I mean English should have finished things
01:16:40off there because it was an all-in move the fullback was in the blindside
01:16:44winger was in so they should have finished that one off
01:16:56all again for the Italians they've certainly been able to compete a little
01:17:00more in the second half as they move the ball along the back line to Katita he's
01:17:04going to have Chris Odie on but that's as far as he gets
01:17:14the Italians to their credit have stuck to their task admirably this afternoon
01:17:24did get the feeling midway through the first spell of the Englishman could
01:17:28easily win this match by 50 points
01:17:32they've been able to win just enough ball in the second half to prevent the
01:17:36English floodgates from opening two tries to one the home team ahead in the
01:17:40try count of the second spell they lead 36 to 6 overall pushing in the line out
01:17:45another penalty to England and I'm sure we'll see another tap king
01:17:56Jason Leonard initially with the charge now it's freed for the English backs
01:18:00Guscott the weak tackling by number 10 to make this standing a good couple of
01:18:07meters away as he tried to tackle him by the jersey darling again not much
01:18:11room out here for Rory Underwood but somehow another Rory Underwood finds his
01:18:15way through two or three tackles one of the crowds favorites here at Twickenham
01:18:18Rory Underwood
01:18:21outside again says Brian Anderson and it's called from Carling is the scrum
01:18:36England do need one player to come down the middle and straight things up a bit
01:18:40because the moment it's all going wide and a weapon gusket aren't really that
01:18:44sort of Clyde knows under it ocean Carling can certainly come on a
01:18:47straight ball 15 meters from the Italian line
01:19:09Brian Anderson losing his patience with some of these front row forwards and in
01:19:14particular the Italian tighthead prop who wouldn't get his head in and so
01:19:20he's been penalized free kick to England a couple of meters from the Italian line
01:19:23Mike T holding the boy hot ball high trying to thread he's at the line there
01:19:28he is number six Mike T with the ball there trying feverishly to push the ball
01:19:33back to his halfback
01:19:44it tells the story of the match England winning the position count nearly three
01:19:55to one in a tiring afternoon energy-sapping afternoon for the
01:20:00Italian scrum and how much energy have they got left here can they keep the
01:20:06English back out that's it not a bad scrum from the Italians the Englishman
01:20:09in fact going backwards but they do have possession at the line from the
01:20:14ball England at the line all 16 forwards over the line and on the ground he
01:20:22couldn't award a try there scrum five says mr. Anderson 37 minutes have gone
01:20:30in the second half at a couple of minutes on for the injury breaks we've
01:20:34had still time for England to post more points four tries today from the
01:20:39European champions looking for number five
01:20:44solid scrum from the Englishman Andrew across the Rory Underwood who was really
01:21:06roaring at the line was Underwood but solid tackle made on him again the
01:21:10Italians penalized
01:21:14calling to just got Andrew
01:21:22not back ten meters just wondering Jamie how many of these penalties are in fact
01:21:27professional penalties coming here from the Italians well he's got to be close
01:21:30to give me a penalty try but persistently penalized so we go again
01:21:34but never ten yards a month for Sundays
01:21:39the Italians in fact stolen the ball from the Englishman they're gonna have a
01:21:44little run this is the halfback remember he got that great try against
01:21:46the Italians some spontaneous thinking there from the Italians as they kick it
01:21:52ahead now that man's offside katita he was ahead of the play when he kicked the
01:21:57ball but again the Italians going to ground
01:22:08and frustration starting to surface in the Italian team chipping the referee
01:22:14and there'll be a stoppage
01:22:24I think this might be their hook it Giancarlo Pavetta he's down with an
01:22:29injury if you watch this game sorry Brennan but I mean you'll see here
01:22:33Guyton the yellow the number 13 go straight over the top as does Bakari and
01:22:38there he is straight over the top you just can't do that and they've done that
01:22:41all game and it's been enormously frustrating especially for the England
01:22:46boys especially for the crowd and more so for Brian Anderson the referee I feel
01:22:51very very sorry for him I mean as you see it again you'll see Guskett go down
01:22:54and then you'll see the first two guys Italians just go straight over the top
01:22:58bang there's number 14 Bakari going over the top and so it goes on and you just cannot do
01:23:02that I mean you've got to stay on your feet and try and get the ball Guskett's
01:23:06in no position to defend himself anyway so he can't hold on to it he's got to
01:23:10release it so there's every chance to get the ball provided they stay on their
01:23:13feet I'm afraid I've got no sympathy for the Italians at all and they deserve
01:23:17everything they get now
01:23:27Richards Brian Moore manages to free it as Carling decides he won't free it not
01:23:35enough room out there on the right but the ball in fact travels into touch on
01:23:41the pool I don't know if Italian Italy have come out here to keep the score
01:23:45down today or what but they haven't done themselves justice and
01:23:49whatever Twickenham's cards are worth they're a pretty fair bunch and they
01:23:52won't be too impressed with the Italian performers today and the manner in which
01:23:56they conducted themselves
01:24:05coming through the line out England this time penalized and a halfback
01:24:15Francescato on the halfway line
01:24:20Dominguez will kick for touch so we're into injury time here at Twickenham
01:24:28England have this match safely in the bag as it were will post their first
01:24:36win at the World Cup in 1991 and have taken an important step towards
01:24:43qualifying for the next round of course they will need to beat the United States
01:24:46here in a few days time to ensure that they go through New Zealand already have
01:24:50qualified for the quarterfinals with their second win today
01:24:55Chris O'Dea following up but the Cotita he's one of the few genuine world-class
01:25:01players in this Italian team there we saw a little bit of his class as he
01:25:05managed to elude the English defense with very little room to work now the
01:25:09Italian backs Gaten yellow losing the ball forward on the 22 the referee
01:25:17playing advantage here to England
01:25:21in the clear precise instructions from Brian Anderson scrum will take place
01:25:27and build on the 22
01:25:32they will be disappointed a halftime of 24 nil and they're only leaving this
01:25:37half 12 points to 6 and to be honest that's the reflection of the game I
01:25:41believe
01:25:47Andrew manages to offload the ball to eventually to Jonathan Webb carried on
01:25:55by Peter Winderbottom up over the 10-meter line Brian Anderson looks it is
01:26:03a whistle and it is watch I should I might add as well and that in fact is a
01:26:07full-time here at Twickenham so England despite having much the better of this
01:26:13match we're able to only post the four tries two in the first half two in the
01:26:18second this man got half of them one will never forget the other he finished
01:26:22off after a very fine break by Will Cowling and England have got their World
01:26:25Cup hope nonetheless back on track with a resounding and confidence-boosting 36
01:26:31to 6 win
