00:00:00Western Samoa against Argentina a very important game for both sides and the
00:00:05first kick for touch is made by Lissandro Abisu the young 20 year old
00:00:10from Argentina who's made such a big impression at this Rugby World Cup so
00:00:15let's go to the first line out of the game 12 meters on the Puma side of
00:00:19halfway and stand to a Malatai to throw to this line out back of the line out
00:00:24for Argentina is number six Ira Rasaval against Apollo Perolini good start by
00:00:32Western Samoa they won the first line out now via Stephen Basham he's had a
00:00:37marvelous tournament today pushing down towards Martin Tehran the little man on
00:00:42the right-hand side did well to control that one. The tackle made by number six Vaibhavali
00:00:47Western Samoa have stunned critics over here with the ferocity of their tackling
00:00:54and that's a good clearance by Abisu
00:01:04just 20 years of age the young fellow in his seventh cap already
00:01:12Argentina have decided today to rest German Janis which will be of some
00:01:19relief to the Western Samoan side. Another line out wind coming for Camardon
00:01:24again Abisu is going to kick
00:01:28coming down near the 10 meter line Argentina starting well picked up by
00:01:32Buntz now to Vaenga. 10 meter line in Western Samoa territory ball ripped away
00:01:38and in fact it was lost forward. Ryan Anderson spotted the lost forward and
00:01:46Argentina will have to scrum feed. Well a huge weight advantage to Western Samoa
00:01:52in this game but they have good technique the Pumas although Mendes is
00:01:58not playing in the front row today which will assist Western Samoa greatly no
00:02:02doubt. So Stephen Basham with the crook put in by Camardon and that is a
00:02:14beautiful kick by Stephen Basham. So Western Samoa have an early chance here
00:02:20with two minutes gone in the game they're right on the Puma goal line. Super
00:02:27kick by Basham he's been outstanding for Western Samoa in both their previous
00:02:31games and he's a critical man today for their chances. Mariano Bosch replacing
00:02:40Ricardo Laforte in the Puma team today. Ball loose near the line taken in by
00:02:46Camardon. Was knocked on in fact by I think it was Pat Land coming through
00:02:52number eight for Western Samoa. So Argentina have the scrum right in their
00:02:57own goal line. As you saw earlier Western Samoa have the heavier forward pack. This
00:03:04will be a real test of strength here but Argentina have shown at this tournament
00:03:07they set a very good scrum indeed. Held by Jose Santamarina in the back.
00:03:16Why on earth the Puma selectors have decided to leave Mendes, Giannis Laforte and Carreras out
00:03:21nobody will ever know because they still do have a chance of qualifying and
00:03:25they've dropped some of their key players. Santamarina holds again good
00:03:30solid scrum set by Argentina. Camardon back to Arbizu and nicely cleared by
00:03:39Sandro Arbizu. But the early pressure in the game coming from Western Samoa four
00:03:46minutes gone no score and this telecast coming to you through television
00:03:51New Zealand's one world of sport. Diego Cash near the front for Argentina. Good leap near the back.
00:04:02Fadi Lofa left it behind. And the penalty goes against Sila Vaifali number six
00:04:12diving in over the top of the ball and Argentina clear it. Well you can see it's
00:04:18a beautiful day here in Ponte Cri. And this ground at Sardis Road is in
00:04:23marvellous order.
00:04:30These sides really are playing for a place in the quarterfinals of the
00:04:36competition. The side that wins here today will probably go to Murrayfield.
00:04:43Away goes Alalatoa. The kick from Basham. Waiting is Diego Cuesta. Silver and he gets tipped up by Brian Lemar.
00:05:04Brian Anderson says you can't make a tackle in midair and penalises the
00:05:08youngster from on the right-wing side. Brian Lemar and Argentina go back on to the
00:05:13attack. Yes that's a fair decision. Norfolk quite clearly states you must wait for the
00:05:18player to come back down to ground before you make a tackle. And I'm afraid
00:05:21it's cost Western Samoa some 50 metres or so. So it's thrust and counter-thrust
00:05:30in the first five minutes of the game. Stan Turmalaitai one of the characters
00:05:34of the Western Samoa team. Argentina controlling this one. Goal line behind
00:05:45about 10 metres away. Now it's free for Abizu. Not a good pass. Snap, drop, kick and
00:05:53goal by Laborde. Eduardo Laborde was a new cap at the start of this tournament.
00:06:00And with Del Castillo not playing today it's quite possible that he will do the goal-kicking.
00:06:06Aja Lupo.
00:06:22Ball falls nicely for Mark Birtwistle. Now it comes for Vaya. Bashop is standing inside,
00:06:31he's 22 and that's another nice kick from Stephen Bashop. Quickly thrown in by
00:06:36Tiran. Back to Abizu. But the whistle has gone.
00:06:47That's one rule that could possibly be changed. You can take the line out as long as it's
00:06:51further back from where the ball went into touch.
00:06:57Another leap by Pablo Guabsi. So far Argentina just rising a little higher in the line-outs.
00:07:07Pablo Garreton today has swapped the number 6 jersey and is wearing 7 to allow Francisco
00:07:13Irarasaval to come in for his first test match. And another of the regular flankers, Jose
00:07:20Santamarina, has gone on to the back of the strum for the Pumas. Camadon. Again a very
00:07:26solid strum set by the Pumas side. The kick comes from Camadon.
00:07:32Cat Lamb going back to dispute possession. Taken in back by Sila Vaipali. 10 metre line
00:07:38in Western Samoan Territory. Coming now for Vaya. Good solid thrust in centre field made
00:07:46by, I think it's Timo Tangelo who's got himself involved in there. Now it's swung out again.
00:07:54To Vaya. A long one across to Limar. Good hands. Good skills by Brian Limar. Andy Ialupo
00:08:03was in the movement as well. Good to see the Samoans have got the confidence to run the
00:08:08ball. Especially in their own half. No score in the game so far. 8 minutes gone.
00:08:16Mata for Keenan. He's at 2 in the line-out. Bert Whistle is further back. Untidy ball
00:08:22for Camadon. And here is a penalty. There was some obstruction there from one of the
00:08:28Puma forwards. And here is an opportunity for Western Samoa to get points on the board.
00:08:34And Matthew Vaya, who is the Samoans top points scorer so far at the Rugby World Cup, is going
00:08:42to kick for goal.
00:09:12Matthew Vaya, 35 minutes out. So that's not a very good kick at all. He rather rushed
00:09:30it. And it's been cleared away by Garcia Simon. Well that was not a promising first up kick
00:09:36from Vaya. Conditions really couldn't be better. And he opted to use the sand. We've
00:09:41seen a number of the goal kickers at this Rugby World Cup using the teams. But Matthew
00:09:47Vaya is happy using the sand. So thrown quickly by Tumalaitai. Again Argentina getting high.
00:09:53It was untidy ball though. 22 metre line Puma territory. Controlled in there by the Puma
00:10:01captain, Pablo Garraton, number 7. And another penalty. Well played on the ground. So Vaya
00:10:14gets a chance as Pedro Spallater gets to his feet. Vaya gets a chance to make amends for
00:10:20that previous shot. Yes indeed he does. And for his own confidence he'll want to strike
00:10:25it a lot better than that. And Argentina are going to make a decision pretty shortly. Although
00:10:30the game is early early. But they've got to make the initiative in this game. They've
00:10:34got to win this game. Quite categorically they don't have any chance at all. And they
00:10:38can't afford to rest on their laurels or play the game in their own half. And if Samoa then
00:10:43manage to get this kick and put some points on the board then Argentina are really going
00:10:47to start playing a bit. Because they've still got a very reasonable chance of qualifying
00:10:51Argentina. Because they've got one more try than Western Samoa as things stand at the
00:10:55moment. And tries to count very highly of points and level at the end of the group.
00:10:59That's another shot. Matthew Vaya has struck the first two very badly indeed. So he'll
00:11:25just have to settle down now and try and block those thoughts from his memory. Two
00:11:29very bad kicks indeed. So it remains at nil all. Twelve minutes gone in the first half.
00:11:40Rugby World Cup 1991 in pool three Western Samoa against Argentina. And the ball bouncing
00:11:46across the touchline. Well it's early Monday morning in Western Samoa. Very early Monday
00:11:54morning. In fact about 1.15 in the morning. But once again greetings to the big crowd
00:11:58at Apia Park. Twelve to thirteen thousand we understand. Celebrating White Sunday over
00:12:05there. And it's a public holiday today. So there might be double celebrations. Cuesta
00:12:11Silva. The experience with Diego Cuesta Silva. That's a nice long kick down field. But Alou
00:12:15through waiting near his own ten metre line. And he replies with a big kick. But he's put
00:12:19it out on the full. So one or two mistakes just creeping in here. Andy Alou who's played
00:12:24so well at fullback. Rather rushed that kick and put it across the touchline on the full.
00:12:39Thrown by Mariano Bosch. And tidy ball. Perronini gets through to make the tackle. And this
00:12:46time the Samoans didn't stay on their feet. So Brian Anderson who did a game the other
00:12:53day at Twickenham. Between Italy and England. And handed out a heck of a lot of penalties.
00:13:02Has been fairly vigilant as they say early on here Jamie. Yes indeed he has. It was a
00:13:07very difficult game he had to do last week. Last Tuesday at Twickenham. But it was Peter
00:13:13on top of the ball. As you see. Perronini makes a tackle. And here comes Pat. Spread
00:13:17over the top you see. And he's resting on the Argentina side. Although he was finally
00:13:21pushed over to block the ball possibly coming out. He really should have gone in on his
00:13:26feet. Rather than already leading over and falling to the ground. Well it's been a real
00:13:32bone of contention that particular rule at this Rugby World Cup. Some would argue that
00:13:38when you get to the ball like that Jamie. And there are players on the ground. It's
00:13:41so hard to hold your feet if you're running at them. How do you stop and maintain your
00:13:45feet? Well I think that there are ways of doing it. You've got to spread your legs
00:13:51and keep a very good stance over it. And also save the referee on standing. Eduardo Laborde.
00:13:58First chance for Argentina to get points on the board here. That's a lovely looking kick
00:14:08from Laborde. A good start for the youngster. The centre three-quarter. And Argentina strike
00:14:17first in the game and they lead by three points to nil.
00:14:26Slightly against the run of play because Weston Samoa have been mainly in the Argentinian
00:14:30half. But if you get a chance you've got to take it. And Weston Samoa have had two and
00:14:34failed pretty miserably I might add with that kick to the goal. And Argentina have
00:14:39taken their chances.
00:14:43Ailupo restarts.
00:14:49Well the first knock on was by Argentina. Mark Burt was sailing through there. But Argentina
00:14:54in fact had knocked it on previous to that. And so now Matthew Byatt who has missed two
00:15:01penalty attempts.
00:15:06Good strong scrummaging from both sides. Not put in straight by Matthew Byatt.
00:15:13That's the one area that Weston Samoa struggle with all tournaments is the scrummaging.
00:15:20Gonzalo Camadon. With a good looking kick down the touchline. That's a lovely kick by Camadon.
00:15:27One of the very promising youngsters in the FUMA side. And if they can hold this squad
00:15:32together for another four years they could well become quite a force in world rugby.
00:15:36Because they have youngsters in key positions like Camadon at halfback. Abizo at first 5'8".
00:15:46Some barging in the line up by Pablo Boabse.
00:15:50So Byatt puts it on the mark. The Argentines, the Weston Samoans want to run it.
00:15:54Badia Lofa does run it. Gave it nicely to Burt Russell.
00:15:57And the ball lost forward by Peralini comes again for Camadon.
00:16:07Just on the Weston Samoa side of half way. Camadon again back to Abizo.
00:16:12And he settles it down with a kick. Not a very good kick though.
00:16:15And it's fielded by Ailupo. And that's cleverly done by Andy Ailupo.
00:16:20But he doesn't find touch either. So Gesuno Engo, the Argentinian fullback.
00:16:27Solid tackling from both sides here. Now Camadon hands it off to Arrasaval.
00:16:35Good willing encounter so far.
00:16:39Now Abizo Garcia Samoan. Good solid tackle and centre field made by Tuovaina.
00:16:45And it's speculated away downfield by Martin Teran.
00:16:50Well I think the Weston Samoan side showed there Jamie that their tackling is going to be pretty solid again today.
00:16:56It's going to have to be to keep these Argentinians out.
00:16:59Good sustained bit of pressure from Argentina.
00:17:01But Weston Samoa never let them get across the game line and really get going forward.
00:17:08Francisco Arrasaval from Cardinal Newman of Buenos Aires.
00:17:13He's off the back, the number 6 with the fairly long hair.
00:17:18He is a real tearaway as the All Blacks found on their tour to Argentina just recently.
00:17:27Strong fed by Vaya.
00:17:34Chasing up after this is Timo Tangelaar. Bit of a mismatch out on that wing.
00:17:38Tangelaar the big fellow against the little bloke Teran.
00:17:40But here is Teran.
00:17:42Wester Silva having a run for Argentina.
00:17:44He's good from broken play this fellow.
00:17:46But he had the ball knocked away, taken on by Arrasaval.
00:17:49Diago Cash gets the pass on.
00:17:51Good open here for the Argentinians.
00:17:55Abizo taken and a good tackle from behind by Vaya.
00:17:59But the Pumas proving dangerous with the ball in hand here.
00:18:02Yes, Frankie Bunch just knocking the ball on deep in Argentinian territory.
00:18:05They counter attack very well Argentina.
00:18:07And they've got the ball through the hands most of the players now.
00:18:11And they're looking to run with it and they're running with purpose.
00:18:13They know they've got to get a good lead in this first half to really put the pressure on the Samoans.
00:18:22That's a lovely clearance by Stephen Basham.
00:18:24One of the journalists over here this morning named his world team
00:18:27from the players he's seen so far at this tournament.
00:18:30And three of the Western Samoan players made that world team.
00:18:33Stephen Basham, Pat Lamb and the hooker stander Tumalaitai.
00:18:38Which was very interesting.
00:18:40But Stephen Basham has really been one of the best first five eights we've seen at the tournament.
00:18:43And he's got a lot of experience.
00:18:45And he's got a lot of experience.
00:18:47And he's got a lot of experience.

00:21:15And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:16And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:17And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:18And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:19And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:20And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:21And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:22And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:23And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:24And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:25And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:26And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:27And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:28And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:29And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:30And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:31And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:32And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:33And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:34And he's got a lot of experience.
00:21:36Well, keep an eye on this fellow Francisco Urarasaval.
00:21:39He's not very big.
00:21:41But he is a human dynamo.
00:21:43Number 6 for the Pumas.
00:21:49Off the back goes Pat Lamb.
00:21:51Nice long pass across to Lima.
00:21:55Near the 10 metre line in Western Samoan Territory.
00:21:57Now Vaja clears it out to the left.
00:21:59Using the ball well.
00:22:00Tua Vainga.
00:22:01Good support play from Frank Buntz.
00:22:03Good solid fend on Tehran.
00:22:07Getting some continuity into their play now, Western Samoa.
00:22:0910 metre line in their own territory.
00:22:1123 minutes gone on the first half.
00:22:13And they lead by 6 points to 3.
00:22:15And Stephen Basham has time to survey the options.
00:22:19Kicks it down to Gergimo Ango.
00:22:21Tehran.
00:22:22Don't give him too much room to move.
00:22:24Because he's very, very fast indeed.
00:22:26Links up nicely with Cuesta Silva.
00:22:27Tehran back again.
00:22:28Big tackle made by Peter Fatialofa.
00:22:31The big crop forward got across to make a vital tackle there.
00:22:36This game has really opened up Camardon.
00:22:38Feeds it away to Arbizu.
00:22:40Cuesta Silva's in it again.
00:22:42Solid tackling in centre field on Garcia Simon.
00:22:46Argentina though hanging on to the ball.
00:22:49And they have been penalised.
00:22:51Somebody played it on the ground there.
00:22:53But quite a lengthy period of play.
00:22:57Both sides willing, Jamie, it seems, to use the ball wide.
00:23:00Absolutely.
00:23:01And Argentina know now they've got to score tries.
00:23:03And what a wonderful tackle by the Western Samoans.
00:23:07The captain, Peter Fatialofa.
00:23:09They get across there.
00:23:10And I think it was on the wing of Tehran for Argentina that he made the tackle.
00:23:15And it's going to frustrate Argentina, these tackles from Western Samoa.
00:23:19And all credit to them.
00:23:21If they can get another score now, Western Samoa,
00:23:23the pressure will really be on the Argentinians.
00:23:26But I think we're now going to see a very open game of rugby.
00:23:29And there's going to be two very tired sides by the end of the day.
00:23:33Both sides well aware they need to score tries.
00:23:35Argentina, of course, need to win the game as well to qualify.
00:23:38Because they haven't had a win so far at the tournament.
00:23:42Steven Bash of another powerful looking punt downfield.
00:23:45Not finding touch though.
00:23:46And it's into the arms of Diego Cuesta Silva.
00:23:50And his reply is a huge punt downfield.
00:23:54Vastly experienced player, Diego Cuesta Silva.
00:23:56He's a doctor in Buenos Aires, specialising in cardiology.
00:24:02And he's having today his 33rd international.
00:24:10Apollo Perolini at the back of the line-out for Salou.
00:24:14They have this take.
00:24:15It's taken in by Alalatoa.
00:24:17Back to Vaya.
00:24:20Again, it's Cuesta Silva waiting.
00:24:23And offside here.
00:24:27And it was against number 7, Apollo Perolini.
00:24:31And so Argentina have opted for the scrum back where Vaya made the kick.
00:24:4025 minutes gone in the first half.
00:24:42Western Samoa are ahead by 6-3.
00:24:44It's been a good open game so far.
00:24:46There's so much resting on this match.
00:24:48Now Camadon to Arbizu.
00:24:52A test for Ayalupo.
00:24:53It's a good looking kick.
00:24:55Ayalupo pulled out at the last minute and dropped it.
00:24:57And Argentina onto the loose ball.
00:24:59Garraton was first man there.
00:25:01Up to Arasaval.
00:25:05Camadon hands it back to big Pedro Scorlaga.
00:25:11Good solid running by the Argentinian pack.
00:25:16And it all just got a little bit loose there.
00:25:19And Western Samoa have a relieving penalty.
00:25:23Great defence again by Western Samoa.
00:25:25And they're just going to take their time now.
00:25:27Don't rush anything.
00:25:28Don't get into the rushing tactics of the Argentinians.
00:25:31Let it all come naturally and slow it down.
00:25:33And certainly, Steven Bashov at fly half mustn't miss touch again.
00:25:37He's got to find his touches as he's just done.
00:25:40There's no question that Western Samoa has been the talking point of this 1991 Rugby World Cup.
00:25:48All the Sunday papers in Britain today had feature articles on not only the team, but the country itself.
00:25:56And it really has been marvellous publicity for Western Samoa.
00:26:00The side have been great ambassadors for their country.
00:26:04Argentina in control again here with Arpizu kicking high.
00:26:07Starting to pump the high kicks.
00:26:08And this time it's Puma who has got himself offside.
00:26:11It's Eduardo Laborde, the centre three-quarter.
00:26:14And like the Pumas, Western Samoa have opted for the scrum back.
00:26:19It's going to be a tough decision that because the scrummage isn't going so very well for Western Samoa.
00:26:23And the kick could have been the better option there.
00:26:25Let's see if this scrum has settled down a bit now.
00:26:28Matt Lamb comes off the back.
00:26:29Good play again by Lamb.
00:26:33And offside against the Pumas.
00:26:36Standing off on the blind side of the scrum.
00:26:38I told you they should have taken the scrum, didn't I?
00:26:41Yes, I think you did.
00:26:47So here we go again with Matthew Byers.
00:26:49He's got the ball.
00:26:50He's got the ball.
00:26:51He's got the ball.
00:26:52He's got the ball.
00:26:53He's got the ball.
00:26:54He's got the ball.
00:26:55He's got the ball.
00:26:56He's got the ball.
00:26:57Here we go again with Matthew Byers.
00:26:59His confidence hopefully restored after that good conversion.
00:27:02After he had made a real hash of those first two penalties.
00:27:12He does tee the ball up incredibly high.
00:27:14Certainly on his first two.
00:27:15If you look now, the ball is well, well off the ground.
00:27:18I mean, that's the biggest sand cast I think we've seen from any kicker at this Rugby World Cup.
00:27:23And there's a great danger of A, getting right underneath it.
00:27:27So therefore you don't get the distance.
00:27:29And if you hit it slightly to the wrong side, it is going to screw around as we saw in his first two kicks as well.
00:27:35So he's got to strike it absolutely right.
00:27:37Here we go.
00:27:52He has struck it well.
00:27:56That's a very good kick by Matthew Byers.
00:27:59His first penalty of the day.
00:28:01And Weston Samoa looking much better now.
00:28:03Nine points to three they lead.
00:28:05And 28 minutes gone in the first half.
00:28:18The job now in front of the Pumas.
00:28:20Six points behind.
00:28:22Bet they've looked well capable in this game.
00:28:25Balls for the hooker, Mariano Bosch.
00:28:29Coming for Camardon.
00:28:31Abizu shovels it on this time.
00:28:33Garcia Simón.
00:28:35In comes Ango the fullback.
00:28:37Once again the tackling and centre field is very solid from the Weston Samoa side.
00:28:42And they seem to be having the better of this, Samoa as well.
00:28:45They should get the put in, and they do.
00:28:47That's good work.
00:28:48Yes, the forwards got there just quicker than the Argentinians.
00:28:51So they've got the full momentum going.
00:28:53Even though the Argentinian centre has had the ball.
00:28:56The Weston Samoa forwards arrived before the Argentinian ones.
00:28:59Or the heavyweight grade did.
00:29:00So therefore Weston Samoa going forward.
00:29:03Taken off the back by Lamb.
00:29:05Valle can't hold it this time.
00:29:06Tangaloa.
00:29:09Knocked on.
00:29:10Just a little bit sloppy on the blind side there.
00:29:12A bit rushed as well.
00:29:13Too rushed.
00:29:14The scrum wasn't settled.
00:29:15It eventually collapsed in the front row anyway.
00:29:17It was just a little bit too rushed.
00:29:19And from there an unnecessary move.
00:29:21They should have kicked it down there.
00:29:2330 minutes gone.
00:29:25No injury breaks that I can remember anyway.
00:29:28Taken off the back by Santamarina.
00:29:31A little kick ahead by half-back Camardon.
00:29:34Ayalupo fires it across to Basham.
00:29:36This is dangerous stuff inside the 22.
00:29:38But Basham gets away well.
00:29:41Now he needs to try and link up with the forwards.
00:29:48A jacking side scrum.
00:29:49Well, Stephen Basham got himself into a bit of strife.
00:29:51Or he had it pushed on him really by Andy Ayalupo.
00:29:54But he did well.
00:29:57Had a chance to clear though.
00:29:58Could have cleared.
00:30:01So the Pumas.
00:30:09Taken away by Garriton.
00:30:10Looking for the little man, Teran, to come in.
00:30:12Almost punching through was Garcia-Simón.
00:30:15Here they come again.
00:30:16Ira Rasaval.
00:30:21Camardon to Arbizu.
00:30:23Slipped a nice little pass.
00:30:24Good, solid tackling again.
00:30:26And centre field by the Simons.
00:30:28Peter Pariolofa got there first.
00:30:30And crashing his way across the touchline goes Vili Alalatoa.
00:30:35Well, the big fellas are getting around the field.
00:30:37Peter Pariolofa snapped up the loose ball.
00:30:40And his fellow prop forward Alalatoa
00:30:42was able to take it across the touchline.
00:30:46A lot of commitment from the big men of the Western Samoan Pack.
00:30:50Everybody has their job to do.
00:30:52Now Camardon.
00:30:53Arbizu looks like he's getting ready for a dropkick.
00:30:55But he can't get onto the right foot.
00:30:57So he's forced to give it away to Krista Silva.
00:30:59But the whistle's gone.
00:31:05So Brian Anderson has whistled for a penalty.
00:31:11And it was against Stephen Basham.
00:31:12He was offside.
00:31:15I think he spotted the problem.
00:31:17It looked as though Arbizu was going to drop the goal.
00:31:20And he came at Arbizu on his right-hand side.
00:31:23Which meant that he had to step left and couldn't drop the goal.
00:31:26But unfortunately Basham had just jumped off the mark rather too quickly.
00:31:39Change of goal kicking here.
00:31:40Arbizu's going to take the shot from a short distance.
00:31:50Neatly put through by Lissandra Arbizu.
00:31:54So the gap is reduced to three points now.
00:31:57Nine points to six to score.
00:31:59And about eight minutes remaining in the first half.
00:32:11Well the Pumas have great support here at Ponte Pre.
00:32:14Just as do the Western Samoans.
00:32:18There's really quite an atmosphere here at the ground.
00:32:21So much resting on this game.
00:32:23It's been the best pool, the closest pool of the competition.
00:32:28Ailupu down to Ango.
00:32:34Long kick downfield. Doesn't find touch.
00:32:36Basham brings it up towards halfway.
00:32:38Now it's the chase is on for the Western Samoans.
00:32:41It's a well-judged kick coming down just out from the 22.
00:32:44Brian Lima has ripped it away.
00:32:46Looks like it might have been a wee knock on the head by Western Samoan.
00:32:49What could work by Lima.
00:32:51And sadly for the Western Samoans,
00:32:53they just couldn't control the ball at the vital moments.
00:33:06Camargo, Arbizu.
00:33:09Camargo, Arbizu.
00:33:13Again, not quite in touch.
00:33:17Ailupu. Kicks it across towards center field.
00:33:24Perolini thumped in a good tackle by Garcia Simon.
00:33:28The tackling in this match has been ferocious.
00:33:31And Argentina making progress forward there.
00:33:34Well both sides, Jamie.
00:33:36No holds barred.
00:33:38Absolutely not.
00:33:39They realize that it's absolutely crucial this game.
00:33:42Either side can go through.
00:33:43Wales are definitely dead and buried now.
00:33:45And it's going to take a hard nut to crack this knock.
00:33:52Camargo on. Arbizu's inside his 22.
00:33:54So he can safely clear for touch.
00:33:56And this time he has managed it.
00:33:58Lovely kick.
00:34:02The new Hugo Porter of Puma rugby.
00:34:05Lissandro Arbizu.
00:34:07And he looks set for a long reign in that number 10 jersey.
00:34:11Well if he gets his half as long as Hugo Porter, he'll do very well indeed.
00:34:20Jomolaita.
00:34:23A real battle at the back of the line-up.
00:34:24Yara Rasabal goes again.
00:34:27Fiery weak character.
00:34:28Tackle put on him by Frank Bunce.
00:34:30Camargo on. Blindside.
00:34:31Arbizu misses the pass.
00:34:33Teran rips it across into center field.
00:34:36Now here's a chance for the Pumas.
00:34:38Ngo is in.
00:34:39Cuesta-Silva's there with him.
00:34:42Cuesta-Silva, good tackle.
00:34:43But the try is scored by Martin Teran.
00:34:48Great support play by Argentina.
00:34:53Martin Teran, who got two tries against Australia,
00:34:56puts Argentina back in front in the game.
00:34:59Well, that was a beautifully taken try.
00:35:02Look at the support play the Pumas are able to provide here.
00:35:05Teran started it with a long pass.
00:35:07Laborde found Garcia Simon in good position.
00:35:11Then Ngo joined in as well.
00:35:13Cuesta-Silva had a run.
00:35:14Look at the tackle made by Ayalupo here on Cuesta-Silva.
00:35:18But Teran managed to stay up in support.
00:35:21And the little speedster from Tucuman scores between the posts.
00:35:25And the little speedster from Tucuman scores between the posts.
00:35:29Abizu should be able to convert.
00:35:34And it's 12 points to 9.
00:35:36Argentina lead, 5 minutes to go in the first half.
00:35:49The Pumas are riding high now.
00:35:51Their support is getting right behind them.
00:35:52Great work by Martin Teran.
00:35:54He started the whole move off.
00:35:55And he pulled it all up, was there right at the end.
00:35:58And was able to put it right in the middle of the post.
00:36:01Because these extra points are going to be crucial.
00:36:03It's a bitter blow for Western Samoa.
00:36:05Especially close to half time.
00:36:07They're going to have to regroup now.
00:36:11Marvellous game of rugby though.
00:36:1312 points to 9.
00:36:14Long time to go.
00:36:15Still about 3 minutes left in the first half.
00:36:18And an early knock on there by Argentina.
00:36:21Where referee Anderson was playing an advantage.
00:36:24And Western Samoa.
00:36:26They'd be keen to strike back before half time here.
00:36:33It's two not straight now.
00:36:44And that kick is not finding touch either.
00:36:47And we go back to the 22.
00:36:5012 tries are going to be very important.
00:36:58How does it stand at the moment Jamie?
00:37:00Well Argentina have now got 4 and Western Samoa 3 each.
00:37:04So if Argentina were to win this game.
00:37:06They would go through.
00:37:11Still as we said a long time to go.
00:37:13We're not quite at half time yet.
00:37:15A try apiece in this match.
00:37:18The kick forward again by Camodon.
00:37:20Tangaloa going back calling for the fair catch.
00:37:22And that's good work by Timo Tangaloa.
00:37:24He wasn't aware really of where the opposition were.
00:37:26And he had to make that fair catch.
00:37:32So the wingers have scored the try so far.
00:37:34Tangaloa out on the left wing for Western Samoa.
00:37:38And his marker if you like.
00:37:41Martin Teran for the Pumas.
00:37:48Timo Tangaloa who played for the New Zealand 15 this season.
00:37:52Against both Romania and the Soviet Union.
00:37:55Scoring 1 try against Romania and 2 against the Soviet Union.
00:37:58So he's had a very good rugby season indeed.
00:38:01Also a New Zealand 7th representative.
00:38:08Matthew Byer.
00:38:10You can see that the Pumas are fielding a very good and strong scrum.
00:38:14Stephen Basham this time has hooked his kick into touch.
00:38:19So a little bit of the initiative in the game has been wrested away by Argentina.
00:38:2412 to 9 they lead.
00:38:26And still a couple of minutes to go till half time.
00:38:32Mariano Bosch.
00:38:37Good work here.
00:38:39Santa Marina couldn't do very much at all.
00:38:41And was driven back by the Western Samoan forwards who came in low and hard.
00:38:46And they will have the loose end to the scrum.
00:38:57Well there hasn't been much in it in terms of possession in the match.
00:39:02Argentina slightly ahead.
00:39:12Lamb.
00:39:14Now Byer with the kick.
00:39:18Pushing it too far down this time.
00:39:20Still inside Western Samoan territory.
00:39:22Ball in for Tangelawa.
00:39:24Tangelawa's a hard man to stop.
00:39:28Good run by Timo Tangelawa.
00:39:30Chances still there for Thaddeo Lofa.
00:39:32Now Basham.
00:39:35Vying and they must score a try here.
00:39:37Surely they do.
00:39:39Marvellous counterattacking rugby from Western Samoa.
00:39:42They are back in front in the game.
00:39:45All started out on the left wing side by Timo Tangelawa.
00:39:49And finished on the opposite wing by Brian Limar.
00:39:54Peter Thaddeo Lofa was involved as well.
00:39:57And once the backs got into action it had to be a try.
00:40:00There was an overlap there.
00:40:02And it was a try.
00:40:05And once the backs got into action it had to be a try.
00:40:08There was an overlap there.
00:40:10Good pass by Tuo Vyinger.
00:40:12And Brian Limar the 19 year old scores the try.
00:40:15Yes their basic skills are very good in the back line.
00:40:18And they've read the situation superbly.
00:40:21And full credit for coming back and using their backs to do it and get back in the game.
00:40:26Because that Argentinian try a few minutes ago must have been a killer blow for them.
00:40:30And to strike back so quickly.
00:40:32And just before half time to take them with great heart into the break.
00:40:38Marvellous moment for Brian Limar.
00:40:41Scores his first try at the 1991 Rugby World Cup.
00:40:44And a chance here for Matthew Vyer.
00:40:49To give Western Samoa a three point advantage.
00:40:52I think we'll probably have half time after this kick is made.
00:40:55Certainly 40 minutes are up.
00:40:57We haven't had any injury breaks.
00:41:03Crowd likes it. Beautiful kick.
00:41:09Lovely kick by Matthew Vyer.
00:41:11So he's recovered from the early nerves.
00:41:13He converts the try scored by Brian Limar.
00:41:17And at half time Western Samoa lead Argentina by 15 points to 12.
00:41:24Half time in this game.
00:41:26Which has Western Samoa ahead by 15 points to 12.
00:41:31And Jamie Salmon has been keeping an eye on the try scored.
00:41:34And Argentina and Western Samoa back it even.
00:41:37Stephen's here for all.
00:41:40Yes that's right.
00:41:41And if Argentina will win this game.
00:41:43All three teams, i.e. Wales, Argentina, Western Samoa level on points.
00:41:47Whoever scores the most tries goes through.
00:41:52So Jim Fleming the replacement referee gets it started in the second half.
00:41:56As Abizu kicks off.
00:41:58Down to Stephen Bashop.
00:42:00And Bashop gets his first kick in the second half away.
00:42:03And is not finding the touch line.
00:42:04Down to Ango.
00:42:08Good solid run here by Gizermo Ango.
00:42:11The tackle made on half way.
00:42:15Now Abizu.
00:42:17Cross for the second 5'8 Garcia Simon.
00:42:20Putting it back into the centre of the field.
00:42:22Both sides well aware that they have to continue scoring tries in this match.
00:42:26Back to the second spell by Argentina.
00:42:28Abizu's got to have a look at a drop kick here.
00:42:30From a long way out.
00:42:32And he's pushed it just to the right.
00:42:34And so the Western Samoans breathe again.
00:42:37And continue to lead by 15 points as well.
00:42:47Well I don't think there was an injury break in the first half.
00:42:50They've been going hammer and tongs for 40 minutes.
00:42:53Nobody stopped for an injury break.
00:42:57Argentina have it again.
00:42:59Again it's their ball back.
00:43:00Gizermo Ango.
00:43:01And that's a head high tackle.
00:43:03By Peter Pariolofa.
00:43:19I add the dangers.
00:43:21Peter Pariolofa said he ducked.
00:43:24I don't think so.
00:43:27It was worth a try.
00:43:28But I'm afraid he was in the wrong there.
00:43:30But there's no way Western Samoans should have brought the dummies again from Ango.
00:43:34Just the full backs.
00:43:35He did it just before that as well.
00:43:37Safe to kick and then dummy.
00:43:40Well Peter Pariolofa has really got round the field today.
00:43:44He's been playing like a loose board.
00:43:46Gizermo Ango.
00:43:47The man on the receiving end of that solid tackle.
00:43:50Replacing Gizermo, Del Castillo on the Argentine side today.
00:43:55Which was something of a surprise.
00:43:57But mind you, the UMA selectors really provided a number of surprises in the game.
00:44:02Leaving such vastly experienced and talented players as Carreras, Laporte, Janis and Mendes out of their team.
00:44:10And also Del Castillo.
00:44:13So just time for a little reflection for Peter Pariolofa.
00:44:17I'm sure he had plenty to say at halftime to his troops.
00:44:20Very popular member of this Western Samoan side.
00:44:27Once again, greetings to the big crowd at Apia Park in Western Samoa.
00:44:32Hoping you're enjoying this match coming to you live from Sardis Road in Cairns.
00:44:37Compliments of Television New Zealand's one world of sport.
00:44:52Back to Eduardo Laporte for the longer kicks.
00:44:56Back to Eduardo Laporte for the longer kicks.
00:45:16Eduardo Laporte just telling the youngster that he'd like some water on the sand.
00:45:22youngster that he'd like some water on the sand. Next time if possible.
00:45:30Now we're near it. And a well taken by Mata Pakinan. His hunting ability is going to be
00:45:57shown up here. In fact he gives it away to Stephen Basham. That's a wise move.
00:46:01Four minutes gone on the second half. Still we have the half time score. Western Samoa
00:46:17is leading by 15 points to 12. Loose ball there to be claimed. It was snapped up by
00:46:22Burt Whistle but he was offside. Rather a quizzical look at the referee after Jim Fleming
00:46:33said that he was offside. He was holding off the side of the ruck and so Laborde gets another
00:46:40from roughly the same position. What do you think of this decision Jamie? Well it's probably
00:46:57fair enough because there's ruck still going on and Burt Whistle has come offside just
00:47:01as the scrum half. Gamardon is going to feed his back. So a fair decision by the new referee.
00:47:07Change again. Albizu this time. He's come up well short. Mark taken by the other lock
00:47:25forward this time, Burt Whistle. The man who was penalised. Not awarded the mark and he
00:47:29gets a good kick away. Mark Burt Whistle. The Hutt Old Boys Club in Wellington. Club
00:47:33coached by former All Black Greg Cowboy Shaw. Argentina way over the back. Nice throw straight
00:47:47to Garriton. Carried on by the Puma forwards. They'll get this in good position to attack.
00:47:55Albizu shovels it on quickly. Little kick ahead for Cuesta-Silva. Argentina still in
00:48:02control of it. Well the early pressure here in the second half coming from Argentina.
00:48:14They have the side behind. They have the side that needs to win desperately and they need
00:48:19to score tries too. Their captain Pavlo Garriton a little slow to get up. So far in the game
00:48:27there's been no hold ups through injury. Marvellous physical contest. Two very fit sides. Well
00:48:42the ball was out. Mauro Peralini was very worried about that but the referee Jim Clemmings
00:48:47said no it was out. He was quite entitled to get rounds. So it's via to feed. Defensive
00:48:56scrum. Lamb holding. Back for Bashop. And a lot of pressure on Stephen Bashop. He really
00:49:08has brought quite a solidity to this Weston-Symone side Stephen Bashop. Yes you can tell he's
00:49:13been an experienced provincial player for some time in this play. Mariano Bosch. Falls
00:49:20nicely for Bikmata for Keenan. Now the Weston-Symones on a bit of a roll. Takes it down to the 10
00:49:26metre line. Now it pops out. Good solid play here by the Weston-Symones. Now for Vaja.
00:49:36Bashop. Putting Ngo to the test inside his 22. He's got to let it bounce. That's dangerous.
00:49:42They needed to make that tackle. Away goes Ngo. Held by Vaja. Support there from Avisu.
00:49:52Tumalaitai makes the tackle this time. Well they needed to drop the full back right inside
00:50:01the 22 Jamie. He had to pay for his mistake in the ball bounce. And Ngo's got away with
00:50:07murder on the counter attack so far this half. Two or three times he's got through two or
00:50:12three tackles. And that was a crucial position. Santa Marina's got to come off the blind side.
00:50:20Blind side. Oh driven and a good tackle by Pali. Boomers are very strong in this sort
00:50:31of play but they're being driven back by Weston-Symones. Well the penalty goes against Sina by Pali
00:50:38who collapsed the ball. Away goes Kamadon. Good step by Labore. Put the ball on the ground
00:50:47and Mudder for Keenan picked it up. So it's in Weston-Symones' hands now. A run made by
00:50:52Bashop. Nice little kick there by Stephen Bashop. Tangaloa charging up after it. But
00:50:56that's a lovely little kick again. He really has a marvellous tactical sense this fellow.
00:51:03He certainly does and Vaja's doing the right thing by giving him the ball and letting him
00:51:06make the play. Quite right. There aren't many better first five eights in New Zealand than
00:51:13Stephen Bashop. Surprisingly he can't even make it into the Canterbury side. Back in
00:51:19New Zealand Greg Coffey has occupied that position all season. Stephen Bashop has been
00:51:24playing for Canterbury B believe it or not. Here he is one of the stars of the Rugby World
00:51:28Cup in 1991. Anybody who's managed to accumulate 90 first class games by the time he's 25 must
00:51:38be a very good player indeed. So really this is the first significant injury break of the
00:51:55game. And I think it is Francisco Urarasavao.
00:52:17Right there at the back of the line out. The tear away. Important line out secured by Pablo
00:52:28Boabse for Argentina. 11 minutes gone in the second half and a bit of a fumble there. But
00:52:36then a recovery by Abizu. It's important Western Samoa can stay down here just for five, six
00:52:42minutes if they can. Force a couple of scrums, a couple of short sides with a bit of line
00:52:46out ball and hopefully get a penalty chance or a try scoring chance.
00:52:52Keenan and Spallater having a bit of a pushing match. Further back Boabse and Birtwhistle.
00:52:59Important line out this. Birtwhistle jumping forward. And it's against, a free kick against
00:53:07the number 8 forward in Jose Sandoval Arena. So have a look here for Basham because this
00:53:12is drop kick territory here. Basham, here is the drop kick. No, he's pushed it way to
00:53:23the right.
00:53:28Right option to amend Argentina. We've had to score twice and the draw is no good to
00:53:32Argentina at all. So Western Samoa must stay down here.
00:53:44I think we're going to see a replacement at full back for Argentina, Dezema Ngo. He's
00:53:49done a very good job in the second half with some excellent counter attacking runs. And
00:53:56I'm fairly certain that he is the player who will leave the field. Santiago Nisson is waiting
00:54:06to come on.
00:54:15So Argentina have just 14 men on the field at the moment. While the doctor checks the
00:54:20injured player Ngo. Limar.
00:54:33Western Samoa penalised for going down that time and Santiago Nisson gets on to the field.
00:54:40He's normally a midfield player so it will be interesting to see exactly how they rearrange
00:54:44the back line.
00:54:51Nice kick by Andy Ailupo.
00:54:55Argentina certainly wasted that penalty. Straight into midfield and Ailupo had no problems at
00:55:00all. No pressure on him either.
00:55:06Taken away by Peralini and he lost it forward. It wasn't thrown straight anyway and so the
00:55:11referee was playing advantage there.
00:55:14He's done a good game Peralini. He's gone around the field well. He's made good progress
00:55:18with his runs, made his tackles around the fringes. He's done very well.
00:55:24He's a very talented player Paolo Peralini. He played for the New Zealand Colts last year.
00:55:31On this side of the scrum wearing jersey number 7. Big scrum again from Argentina. They seem
00:55:36to have it over Western Samoa in the scrums.
00:55:39You can see their short, squat, powerful front row of Aguirre, Bosch and Kach.
00:55:49Get a scrum here from Argentina. Vaya with the kick for Limar to run on to. Well taken
00:55:55by Cuesta-Silva. They miss the tackle again. Finally the tackle is made by Baschup.
00:56:02But they really should have nailed Cuesta-Silva inside the 22. It looks like Western Samoa
00:56:07hit the ball, hit Lam, close to the line and it pops away from Alalatoa and will be
00:56:12cleared by the new man Santiago Messon and not in touch though.
00:56:18Ayalupo, 10m in his own territory. Throws out a wild pass to Baschup but it worked well
00:56:23and Baschup settles it all down with a good kick downfield. The borde goes back.
00:56:30Well, a golden opportunity for Western Samoa. It was beautifully set up by Pita Farialopa.
00:56:35Lam made the thrust but Alalatoa, as he was taken in the tackle, lost it forward.
00:56:44They may not get a better chance in this game to sew it all up. And oh, Jeremy, I mean the
00:56:49line we can see is two, three yards away.
00:56:53Made downfield again. Baschup on his own side of halfway. Pumps it back.
00:57:00Well taken by the hooker Mariano Bosch for Argentina. Coming now for halfback Camadon.
00:57:09Now Apisu inside his 22. A lot of kicks missing touch here.
00:57:15Little kick ahead made by Lima. Argentina back in possession and a penalty.
00:57:23Number five is the man called out, Pedro Spallater. He went in over the top, stopped
00:57:33the progress of the ball coming back. And here is a big kick for Matthew Beyer.
00:57:39The stoke is full as we've got the benefit of the referee's voice up here in the commentary
00:57:44box. But Jim Fleming is much more of a talker than Brian Anderson. He's incessantly talking
00:57:49to the players, reminding them of what's required, which I think is good refereeing.
00:57:53And he certainly likes the game to be played fast and quickly and no hanging about. And
00:57:58that's a good thing as well.
00:58:03Well, we're coming down to the business end of the game. 17 minutes gone in the second
00:58:07half. And this is an important kick. If Beyer can land this one, it gives Western Samoa
00:58:14that important six point advantage, which would mean Argentina would have to score twice.
00:58:20As Jamie pointed out before, a draw is no good for Argentina. They must win. Western
00:58:25Samoa can gain that important advantage if Beyer can land this.
00:58:45Off the post, chance, slow forward. Western Samoa tug it over, getting close to the line.
00:58:53It'll be a scrum. Well, good following up by the Western Samoans. It's easy to stand
00:58:58back and admire the kick. But they charged up after it. And they still have an opportunity.
00:59:06What a big quick ball, quick ball.
00:59:09They've got to come back quickly. Lamb, blindside. Lamb twisting. Not quite there.
00:59:16They'll be looking for the second phase ball again. Western Samoa wouldn't let it go.
00:59:23They're penalised. So the chance gone. Pat Lamb shakes his head in disappointment.
00:59:29Well, the opportunity was there. And the Argentinians have cleared for the moment anyway.
00:59:43Pat Lamb quite rarely going on his own because the float has gone wide. And I think it's
00:59:48Perlini who picks it up and is adjudged by the referee to be on the ground. Therefore
00:59:52he must release the ball.
00:59:56Short line out again. Stan Tua-Malaitai.
00:59:59Kurt Whistle and Keenan in there. It's over the back, a long one for Vai Farley.
01:00:05Western Samoa back in position. Nice hands by Basha. Tua-Vaenga. Back again for Vaea.
01:00:13Tua-Malaitai charges on. They're right in centre field, 15 metres out. Here they come
01:00:17again, Basha. Tua-Vaenga. Ball drops loose, need to control it here. Timo Tangaloa.
01:00:26Again it's sent.
01:00:30Perlini.
01:00:32Buntz. Frank Buntz. Lima is there in support and Buntz is in. What a marvellous try scored
01:00:39by Frank Buntz. And that might be the most decisive try and the most important try that
01:00:44he ever scores.
01:00:55Western Samoa lead by 19 points to 12 and they swung it left and right and Frank Buntz
01:01:01had a lot of work to do here. Abizu came across, he sold the little dummy, pushed him off,
01:01:07stayed inside the touchline and scored a very good try. Frank Buntz.
01:01:15Timo Tangaloa. Timo Tangaloa. Timo Tangaloa. Timo Tangaloa.
01:01:29Look at the part two. I think it's Apollo Perlini. Here we go. He takes out two men
01:01:33there. If you've got two men to pull, give you no bad pass to Buntz. He does really well.
01:01:38Little dummy inside. He just takes out Abizu out of play. And his foot was perilously close
01:01:43to touch, but he just got in there.
01:01:47Argentina losing another player. Francisco Urrasaval.
01:01:57Oh, he looks to be badly shaken. So that's bad luck. He's made an excellent contribution again.
01:02:03Mario Carreras warming up. Big powerful player as you can see. So the second replacement
01:02:18on the field, Carreras, the regular number eight forward, surprisingly left out really,
01:02:24goes in for Urrasaval who looks to be in rather a bad state.
01:02:31But attention switching back now to Matthew Veyer.
01:02:43Just pushed it away to the right.
01:02:47So 19 points to 12. Western Samoa now have that advantage that they were looking for.
01:02:52Here is the end of it. Buntz's powerful run and in he goes.
01:02:57As Abizu despairingly made the tackle. Buntz very close to the touch line, but the touch
01:03:04judge had an eye on it. And he said he was still in the field of play. And that's a lovely
01:03:09clearance. So it's all starting to run now for the Western Samoans.
01:03:13Yes, they put pressure into points. They had a couple of times where they were inches short,
01:03:18literally. And finally, they got it a bit further out. But if they score one more now
01:03:23they'll have a penalty in that. It's kind of the same business.
01:03:29Boss throwing.
01:03:33So Western Samoa have the put into the scrum, 15 metres infield. These sides are playing
01:03:38now for a match against Scotland at Murrayfield next Saturday. And the way things are heading,
01:03:45it's Western Samoa heading to Murrayfield. But we won't count our chickens too early.
01:03:5015 minutes left in the game. The big kick made by Basham, a good one too. The Western
01:03:54Samoans came through. Nicely taken by Messon, the replacement fullback for Argentina.
01:04:04Which way will this go?
01:04:05Got to go to Western Samoa. They were going forward. Absolutely right by the referee.
01:04:10Super kick again by Basham. Just what they wanted to do. More pressure on Argentina.
01:04:14A good right hand position here for the Western Samoans. They can go right, which is the easy
01:04:19route. And I'd go for a drop goal.
01:04:24Basham standing behind the scrum. Lamb is going to hand it back. Knocked on by Pat Lamb.
01:04:33So it just went wrong there. Too fancy, too pretty. They've got problems in the scrums.
01:04:37Get quick ball. Channel one. Get it out early. They're getting pushed back.
01:04:41The boomers on defense. Mario Carreras has gone to the back of the scrum there. And Jose
01:04:53Santamarina has gone back to his flanking position where he normally plays.
01:04:57Back for Arvizu. Big powerful kick. He's not going to find it again. Here's Arlupo.
01:05:10Kicks early. Pushing it down inside the 22. And Arvizu makes the take.
01:05:27Not making the same mistake this time. That's a much better clearance by Arvizu.
01:05:33Well, there hasn't been too much in it. Western Samoa marginally ahead in the territory area.
01:05:42But they really have been ahead in the last 10 minutes. They've pushed Argentina to the
01:05:46very limit. They lead by 19 points to 7. 24 minutes running time gone. You can take about
01:05:52a minute off for injury time. So about 23 gone in the second half.
01:06:01Tomolaitai looking for Apollo Perolini. But it's been taken away by Garriton. Here's Carreras.
01:06:06He's a powerful player. Got a good pass back inside to Santamarina. But it was forward.
01:06:10Well, this is a bit unsightly.
01:06:27Referee's going to have a word to say to Pablo Guabsi. He wants to have a chat also to Mata
01:06:33for Keenan. The only problem with that is that Guabsi's not feeling too well.
01:06:43Well, this game has been played in a marvellous spirit. It's a shame that we had that little bust up there.
01:06:55They're off the field. They're off the field. They've been sent off. Both players sent from the field.
01:07:04That is a real blow to both teams. Especially to Western Samoa because they are likely to carry on in the tournament.
01:07:12They may not have Mata for Keenan in the next match. But the two players have been sent off by Jim Fleming,
01:07:18Pablo Guabsi and Mata for Keenan. Well, well, well. A sensation.
01:07:25Well, I don't really think it needs me to answer what we saw there. The tragedy for both teams.
01:07:31Both teams have a man sent off for the World Cup match.
01:07:35Jim Fleming has sent the first two players at the Rugby World Cup off the field.
01:07:40So both sides down to 14 men now. And that is a warning to everybody else in this tournament
01:07:46that the referees are not going to muck around.
01:07:50So 26 minutes gone. And the crowd still muttering amongst themselves.
01:08:03Argentina. They have the work to do. Kick made down. Bash it. Running it up to the 10 metre line.
01:08:10Pushes it a little nudge ahead again. He's judged the distance extremely well.
01:08:20Argentina controlling it in the ball. But again, shifted back by Weston Samoa. Just a couple of metres.
01:08:27Perolini in there to make a big tackle. And the penalty goes against Santa Marina.
01:08:35He went to ground.
01:08:41Well, Jamie, the first real break in play. And a chance maybe just to reflect on that incident.
01:08:48Well, the referee's taken the law right to the limit. And it's obviously within his power to send off anybody he feels fit to do so.
01:08:55Having said that, it hasn't been a difficult game to control. It hasn't been a niggly game.
01:08:59There's been very little warning that we've seen or heard of in terms of unlawful play.
01:09:06There's no doubt it was a bad incident. And both players were throwing punches regardless of any situation at all.
01:09:14But it's not been a niggly game. And I would have thought that a word for the two captains and the two players by the referee would have sorted the whole matter out.
01:09:22The important thing is, if it had been a niggly game right throughout, different ball game.
01:09:26Warnings could have been issued or something like that. Or last chances.
01:09:30But at this particular instance, there's been none of that at all.
01:09:33And he's got himself thrown two players off.
01:09:36And I'm just sad that a game such as this, which has been a very good game, might be remembered for the wrong reasons.
01:10:06Seven points behind. About 12 or 13 minutes left in this game.
01:10:09Remember, both teams playing with 14 men. Perolini. Big powerful serves by Apollo Perolini.
01:10:15But he's in touch across on the far side of the field.
01:10:18I'm not sure how Western Samoa and Argentina have rearranged their scrums.
01:10:29But most likely, Pat Lamb would have to go in. They would play without number eights.
01:10:37Number five was lifted. So Pedro Scorlato was lifted.
01:10:43And another chance for Valle. And this one from a much more handy position.
01:10:50Well, I must say, Jamie, having watched the Pumas play this season in Argentina, that was one of the problems that the All Blacks encountered.
01:10:57There was a lot of lifting going on in the line-out. Undetected most of the time.
01:11:02But this time they have been pinged by referee Jim Fleming.
01:11:06And if Valle lands this one, then I think Western Samoa will almost be home.
01:11:32Once again, he's away to the left. So lots of opportunities for Matthew Beyer today.
01:11:47But the goal-kicking boots just have not been on.
01:11:50So it's still 19 points to 12. The Pumas still have a chance.
01:11:54They're running out of time, though. Just over 10 minutes remaining in this game.
01:12:03Oh, a man in front. So lots of errors creeping in.
01:12:08Argentina getting very frustrated. But it's got to be a quick ball from the Samoans.
01:12:13Even with those seven men each, I think they'll struggle in the scrum.
01:12:16So they've got to go right quickly, I would hope.
01:12:19So no man backing on the back of the scrum. You can see that.
01:12:23Jim Fleming wants the ball put in more. Much more quickly than what it has been.
01:12:34So Beyer gets rid of it quickly. Taken off the back by Lamb.
01:12:37Beyer running it across for Ailupo. Nice little kick here by Ailupo.
01:12:41Charging through the Samoans. Taken away there by Teran.
01:12:44Burt Whistle makes a good tackle on him. And the Western Samoans penalise.
01:12:50They dived in over the top. Beyer came up with it.
01:12:55The man pointed to was Brian Lima.
01:13:03A kick made by Camodon. It's an absolute shocker.
01:13:07Drop kick attempt. Just away to the left this time. Made by Pat Lamb.
01:13:14Not often forwards get a chance to drop the ball at home.
01:13:17Fijians did it the last World Cup. He could really have made a name for himself.
01:13:21Certainly could, but I'm not sure it was the right option.
01:13:27Argentina can't get out of their own 22. Here's Teran. He knocked it off.
01:13:34Well, it's very innovative. If it works, but it didn't.
01:13:38Signs of desperation from Argentina.
01:13:40Trying everything now, but they've got to get some ball.
01:13:43And move it wide. They've got to score a try.
01:13:45And then go down the right again and get a penalty.
01:13:48To get these seven, eight points back.
01:13:55Again, Lamb looking to take it off the back, but the scrum is screwed right around this time.
01:14:03It'll be a quick ball for Western Samoa. They're getting done in the scrums.
01:14:11Vaja feeds quickly. Lamb is going to pump it on.
01:14:15Here goes Vaifaali. Vaifaali pops it up.
01:14:20Burt Whistle has it. Now it's in the arms of Ala Latoa.
01:14:24Releases it. Vaifaali gets in again. Good, powerful run again by him.
01:14:29Ball available there. Now Vaja. Bash it.
01:14:33Straight through goes Tangalawa. Tangalawa still going.
01:14:37That is the try that puts Western Samoa into the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup.
01:14:50Timo Tangalawa gets his second for the day.
01:14:53And Western Samoa are through.
01:14:56Great use of Tangalawa. He's so big and so strong.
01:14:59And they weren't too keen on tackling him.
01:15:01And even though he's got men outside and support all around him, he just brushes them all aside.
01:15:07And I suppose that's right for Matapa Keenan, who's sadly back in the dressing room.
01:15:12And one can't help but feel he'll go back to that incident,
01:15:15because there'll be a tinge of big regret for Western Samoa when they do go through.
01:15:20The version is made by Matthew Vaja. 25 points to 12.
01:15:25And there's no way now that Argentina can climb back into this one
01:15:29with just seven minutes remaining in the game.
01:15:34Great use of Tangalawa. He's so big and so strong.
01:15:38And one can't help but feel he'll go back to that incident,
01:15:41because there'll be a tinge of big regret for Western Samoa when they do go through.
01:15:45Because I can't see Keenan being allowed to play next weekend.
01:15:50Western Samoa, who's gone searching for work. A nice short pass from Stephen Bashop.
01:15:56Nasson went low. Quistis Silva went high.
01:16:01And the try was scored by Tangalawa.
01:16:05Well, that was a head-high tackle.
01:16:06Now, you could almost argue for a penalty back at halfway as the try was scored.
01:16:11However, that's probably being just a little bit harsh. It didn't go 10 metres.
01:16:15Effectively, Western Samoa have got their free start on halfway anyway.
01:16:19And Argentina have just dropped, haven't they?
01:16:22The last 10 minutes, they've knocked on, they've missed touch,
01:16:25they've not put it 10 metres. They really have just dropped.
01:16:30All credit to Western Samoa. They've kept fighting right to the end.
01:16:34The Argentinians haven't quite been able to sustain the run.
01:16:37Quickly taken here by Camardon. Losing the ball.
01:16:40Here's Tangalawa bursting into the clear again.
01:16:43Good support from Frank Funtz. Opening up here for the Samoan side.
01:16:47Finding Vaifali. Almost taken by Lima.
01:16:53They enjoy running with the ball.
01:16:56And Lima not quite able to hang on to it there.
01:17:00But the applause breaking out around Cyrus Road here in Potipre.
01:17:05And I'm sure there's great joy also.
01:17:08Especially at Apia Park in Western Samoa.
01:17:12Samoans have played magnificently again here today.
01:17:17Four tries to one. Tackle made on Carreras.
01:17:21And there's no tackle too, I can tell you that.
01:17:23Here they come again. Funtz brings it up over the 22 metre line.
01:17:28And it wasn't Funtz in fact, it was Tuol Boinga.
01:17:33So again Argentina have the ball.
01:17:36About six minutes left for them.
01:17:38Good chance for a score there. The head of Barrielopa meets him.
01:17:43Not making too much progress now the Boomers. Trying to play it close.
01:17:47Their best chance really lies out on the wings with Cuesta-Silva and Tehran.
01:17:55Here's the captain, Garaton.
01:17:58Gave it away. Boinga has it.
01:18:00He's looking for his support.
01:18:05Pretty thick penalty in fact.
01:18:09Slow it down at Western Samoa.
01:18:11They can just take all the time in the world and drill it down the touchline.
01:18:18But no, they're going to run it.
01:18:20Popular move. Here's Perolini.
01:18:22Looking for support. Has it from Lambeau.
01:18:24Backs up. Stephen backs up. Wonderful try.
01:18:27Perolini.
01:18:36Western Samoa running right in the last ten minutes.
01:18:40That's their fifth try this afternoon.
01:18:42Stephen Basham, who's been in magnificent form here at the World Cup,
01:18:46makes it 29 points to 12.
01:18:49Wonderful support play once again.
01:18:51And great attitude to keep up running it.
01:18:53And Perolini has been quite outstanding in my book today.
01:18:57He's been absolutely everywhere and still made heaps and heaps of tackles.
01:19:01And Stephen Basham, I tell you what, he's got his fair share of good work too.
01:19:05Good support play. Perolini in all the back row there.
01:19:08Six, seven, eight. All together.
01:19:10Marvellous to see. There's Pat Lamb straight into it.
01:19:13Good pass too. Good hands amongst the back row.
01:19:18Super try scored by Stephen Basham.
01:19:20Well done.
01:19:2529 points to 12.
01:19:27And this is turning into a hiding.
01:19:29This fire has converted again.
01:19:3131 points to 12.
01:19:35Argentina haven't scored in the second half.
01:19:37Remember it was only 15-12 at half time.
01:19:41But it's been one way traffic since half time.
01:19:45And Argentina have gone crashing out of the Rugby World Cup.
01:19:49Weston Samoa will be going to Murrayfield.
01:19:52What a fantastic game that'll be.
01:20:03Well he wasn't going for the ball at all.
01:20:05It was Pedro's ball at it.
01:20:07You've got Mark's ten metres for having a word to say.
01:20:09The Samoans are running it at every opportunity now.
01:20:13They're enjoying themselves and why wouldn't they be?
01:20:16Brunching on goes by Farley.
01:20:18Lost it forward though.
01:20:19Now Santa Marina for Argentina.
01:20:22Counter attack coming up.
01:20:23Tangalay went for the intercept.
01:20:24Pass booked a mile forward.
01:20:27But referee Fleming will play the line out instead.
01:20:32Well maybe this finish by Weston Samoa,
01:20:34Jamie will perhaps push the thinking and the talking away from that sending off.
01:20:41Which as you said, could well have been the talking point from the game.
01:20:45But I don't think so now.
01:20:46No, because Weston Samoa have now scored six, seven tries in this game.
01:20:49Which is a wonderful effort.
01:20:53Line out ball untidy for Vaya.
01:20:56Perolini did well to clean it up.
01:20:58Bashov across the bunks.
01:20:59Long went across.
01:21:00Here comes the fullback, Ayalupo.
01:21:02Look at the pace he's got.
01:21:03Now the chase for Lima.
01:21:05Bounces beautifully for Lima.
01:21:07And what a try.
01:21:17Brian Lima gets his second of the day.
01:21:20And they ran it from inside their 22 for a sensational try.
01:21:28Wonderful, wonderful running play by Weston Samoa.
01:21:31I tell you what, you would have thought they would have won enough friends in this Rugby World Cup.
01:21:35But after running Raj and Tina Ragan here today,
01:21:38they're going to win a lot more new ones.
01:21:40Especially by the style they play.
01:21:42Thank you very much.
01:21:43We've qualified.
01:21:44We're going to hold our horses.
01:21:45This is wonderful rugby.
01:21:47This was a brilliant try.
01:21:48What a pass from Frank Bunsen.
01:21:50The pace came from Andy Ayalupo, the fullback.
01:21:52He saw the gap.
01:21:53He also made the decision to kick, which was a good one.
01:21:56Because at the time, Lima was just being covered.
01:21:58And the bounce was important.
01:22:00And Martine Ziran did his best to get across.
01:22:02But Lima was across in the corner.
01:22:04Six tries scored by the Weston Samoa.
01:22:06And the team is going to win the World Cup.
01:22:08What a pass.
01:22:09But Lima was across in the corner.
01:22:11Six tries scored by the Weston Samoans.
01:22:1435 points to 12.
01:22:16What a bounce.
01:22:17Matthew Vaja, right from the touchline.
01:22:39Not this time.
01:22:40Well, as you can hear, the applause is growing.
01:22:46The applause is broken out again.
01:22:50And I'll tell you what, if I was Ian McGeehan and David Sowell
01:22:53watching this game, Jamie, I'd be a little bit concerned.
01:22:56Oh, most certainly.
01:22:57They're not going to get anything easy up next weekend.
01:23:02Doing everything right now, the Weston Samoans.
01:23:04Lovely take there by Mark Birtwistle.
01:23:06Back for Vaja.
01:23:08Are they going to go again?
01:23:09Yes, they are.
01:23:10They really are enjoying themselves.
01:23:13But unfortunately, a bit of shepherding there.
01:23:15A bit of obstruction by the backs.
01:23:18So Argentina get a chance to salvage something out of this.
01:23:22Big tackle put on him by Peralini.
01:23:25And that snuffed that out.
01:23:33Jim Fleming said to Peter Buddy, don't look at me like that.
01:23:38Argentina take it in.
01:23:41Charging on goes Santamarina.
01:23:44And he gets put down in a good tackle.
01:23:48And I think it came from Vili Aluatoa.
01:23:51And that is the end of the game.
01:23:52Argentina raise their arms in triumph.
01:23:5635 points to 12.
01:23:58They've beaten, at least Weston Samoa, they've beaten Argentina.
