00:00Today, the DepEd and Department of Health's Bacuna Eskwela Program was inaugurated.
00:05Its target is to vaccinate the 3.8 million students and protect them against vaccine-preventable diseases.
00:14Benji Durango was at the center of the news.
00:19It's time to vaccinate again.
00:21After being suspended for several years due to the pandemic,
00:23the Bacuna Eskwela Program was reopened for the grade schoolers.
00:26The DOH and DepEd worked in tandem to vaccinate the 3.8 million students from grades 1 to 7 across the country.
00:34It started with Dr. Albert Elementary School in Manila.
00:37Its target is to reduce the number of children who are sick.
00:40So even if their children cry,
00:43their children are approved to be vaccinated against measles, rubella, diphtheria, and tetanus.
00:50According to the DOH, from January to December this year,
00:53the list of cervical cancer cases is at its peak,
00:56where 8,000 cases have been diagnosed and more than half are dying.
01:01This is followed by tigdans and rubella,
01:04where 11 are dying from more than 3,000 cases.
01:0825 are at home from more than 200 cases of diphtheria,
01:12while more than half are at home from 81 cases of tetanus.
01:16This is not forced, according to the DOH,
01:18but they will take time to explain to the parents
01:22what is good for the children.
01:24Asek Galvan's aunt died of cervical cancer,
01:29so his mother vaccinated his child.
01:32So a child who was vaccinated is a very good recipient.
01:36Sir, is this voluntary?
01:38Yes, this is voluntary.
01:39Sir, there are parents who are not vaccinated. What is the reason?
01:43We are convincing them.
01:45The good thing about school-based vaccines is that we know the children who are not vaccinated.
01:49So over the next two months, there is a schedule.
01:52We can go and talk to them and we can convince them.
01:56Our teams are returning to talk to them about why they are not vaccinated.
02:00There are different reasons. Most are afraid of the side effects.
02:03Because of the recent issues regarding vaccines,
02:06less than 40% or four out of every ten parents
02:10have agreed to vaccinate their children.
02:12We are already in the 90s. 90% are willing to get vaccinated.
02:15But because of what happened in Dengvaxia,
02:17it dropped to the 40s.
02:19Now, we are not yet recovering from this.
02:21Mami Karen was HPV vaccinated for her daughter, Briana.
02:24She is vaccinated because there is a history of cervical cancer in the family.
02:28So when they found out that there is a free vaccine in the school,
02:30they immediately went to get vaccinated.
02:32It is a big help that I asked others what their opinion is.
02:37All the questions I asked were positive.
02:39The DOH and DepEd were sure that the vaccine is enough
02:43and that they will finish it within two months.
02:45The vaccine is life-saving.
02:48If you are not vaccinated, you are clearly infected.
02:51What can happen to a child is really far away.
02:55In extreme cases, a child can die if there is no vaccine.
02:59It is expected that this will be done in other schools
03:01across the country in the coming days.
