'He's full of it': Governor fires back at Trump after his Detroit remark

00:00This morning, Donald Trump is heading to Aurora, Colorado.
00:03You might ask, why is he going to a pretty safely blue state?
00:06Well, CNN's Kristen Holmes is there, I imagine, with an answer.
00:10Good morning, Kristen.
00:13Good morning, John.
00:14Well, that's right.
00:15And it's not just the fact he's going to be in Aurora, Colorado tomorrow.
00:18He's going to be in Coachella, California, also a solidly blue state.
00:21Now, the motive behind these trips is, of course, different.
00:25One, they do believe, they being Donald Trump's campaign,
00:28that when he does these kind of big campaign events in blue states,
00:32that it gets a lot of attention.
00:33But two, when he's here in Aurora, this is a chance for him
00:37to really amplify that rhetoric about migrants,
00:40particularly some of that false rhetoric.
00:42Remember, one of the things he's been saying for months
00:44particularly pertains to Aurora, Colorado,
00:47saying that he's been overtaken by Venezuelan gangs.
00:50We have heard pushback from the governor of the state,
00:52from the mayor of this city, saying that is not true.
00:55We've also heard blowback about his appearance here today.
00:59I did hear from one Democratic lawmaker who told me
01:02maybe it would be a good thing to shine light on the fact
01:04that this city is not overtaken by Venezuelan gangs.
01:08But one thing to keep in mind here is that this is coming on the heels
01:11of another visit in which Donald Trump upset city, local and state officials.
01:15That was yesterday when he insulted the city of Detroit while speaking in Detroit.
01:22We are a developing nation.
01:24Well, we're a developing nation too.
01:26Just take a look at Detroit.
01:30Detroit's a developing area a hell of a lot more than most places in China.
01:35The whole country is going to be like, you want to know the truth?
01:38It'll be like Detroit.
01:40Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she's your president.
01:46And Donald Trump has really been doubling down on this fear-based messaging,
01:50whether it's about the economy,
01:52which is part of what he was talking about in Detroit,
01:53or immigration here in Aurora, Colorado.
01:56And while, of course, we have reported that much of this rhetoric is not true,
02:01I will tell you that there are people who believe it.
02:03You can see that from the people standing behind me.
02:05There are hundreds of people in line for this rally in Aurora, Colorado.
02:09They believe this messaging and they believe that they will show up to vote in November.
02:14And his campaign is going to continue doubling down on this, again,
02:17fear-based messaging because of the fact that they see people turning out.
02:21They think it's going to help propel him possibly back to the White House in November.

02:30Joining us right now is the Democratic governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer.
02:35Governor, thank you for coming on.
02:36You had choice words for Donald Trump after he trashed Detroit while in Detroit.
02:43The thing that I wonder today is, why do you think he said it?
02:52I don't know because he doesn't know what the heck he's talking about
02:55on this issue or on many others, Kate.
02:58You don't come into Detroit and speak to the Detroit Economic Club
03:01and then denigrate the city of Detroit.
03:04It shows he's totally out of touch.
03:06Detroit's population is growing for the first time in decades.
03:09We hosted the biggest, best NFL draft the country's ever seen.
03:14The Lions and the Tigers are kicking, you know, behind.
03:19And we are seeing a resurgence in manufacturing, thanks to the Biden-Harris administration.
03:25So there's so much good stuff going on in Detroit.
03:28And so for Donald Trump to come in and crap all over the city shows he's out of touch,
03:33he's dangerous, and he's full of it.
03:36You wrote to Trump last night that the way you put it is,
03:40you better believe Detroiters won't forget this in November.
03:44If he is burning bridges with voters there and turning them off, as you say,
03:48why then is it still so tight in Michigan?
03:57I think like everywhere, right?
03:58We know that we've been a divided country.
04:00We know that his ugly and divisive rhetoric has taken a toll.
04:05And that has, you know, hardened people.
04:08And a lot of people are turning out because it's so toxic, thanks to Donald Trump.
04:13That's why our work is so important.
04:15We're kicking off our Blue Wall bus tour.
04:18Governor Shapiro in Pennsylvania, Governor Evers, we're kicking it off on Monday.
04:26How Kamala Harris is going to focus on growing the middle class,
04:30cutting our costs, and delivering for people.
04:32But this is going to be a close election.
04:34Despite all his ugly rhetoric, his divisive rhetoric, and his insulting rhetoric,
04:39it's going to be a close election, and we're not taking anyone for granted.
04:42Detroit is one of the largest majority Black cities in the country.
04:45And one thing that Barack Obama's return to the campaign trail
04:49and his message to Black men voters while he was in Pittsburgh,
04:53is how Donald Trump has recently made inroads with Black male voters.
04:57That there is signs that Harris is having a tough time
05:01mobilizing what could be a very important demographic.
05:05What about Kamala Harris's pitch is falling short?
05:08So much so that they're sending Obama to reconnect and bridge the gap.
05:16Well, I think that there are a lot of people in our country who are struggling.
05:20They're struggling to make ends meet.
05:21They feel unheard.
05:22And because of that, they're either checking out or they're looking for change.
05:28Kamala Harris is the change we need.
05:30Kamala Harris is going to usher in a whole new moment in this country.
05:34I am proud to be a supporter and to be one of the campaign co-chairs.
05:38She's got a vision for America that includes everyone
05:41because she's lived lives like ours.
05:43She has had to work hourly jobs and take care of an elderly parent.
05:48Donald Trump doesn't get that.
05:49He's never sat with a parent who has to take chemotherapy
05:52and organize their pills for them.
05:54He's never changed diapers, Barack Obama said.
05:57I can't imagine he's ever done any of those things.
06:00But that's what lives of Americans are like.
06:02And that's why we need someone who gets us, who's going to fight for us.
06:04And that's Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
06:07You talk about Harris being change.
06:09The VP this week was on The View and asked and was asked
06:12how basically she would be the change,
06:14how a Harris presidency would be different from a Biden presidency.
06:17Let me play this.
06:20Would you have done something differently than President Biden during the past four years?
06:26There is not a thing that comes to mind in terms of
06:29and I've been a part of most of the decisions that have had impact.
06:36She later circled back and said the change would be
06:39different would be a Republican in her cabinet.
06:40But do you as a Democratic governor want Harris's presidency, if she wins,
06:48to look not a thing differently, to be exactly like a Biden presidency?
06:54I think the values are aligned, but obviously she's a different leader than the current president.
07:03You know, she's been a great partner to him,
07:06but she's got a different lived experience.
07:07She's got a different vision of what we need to accomplish and where our focus needs to be.
07:12I'm grateful that she is out there talking about
07:15care for people who are at home and in their later years.
07:19This is a fundamental integrity question.
07:21It's also about quality of life.
07:23But it's also about saving money for our country and for our people.
07:26So she's got a different lived experience.
07:28She's going to bring it to all things.
07:30And this is going to be a very different chapter in America if she becomes our next president.
07:36And that's why I'm excited.
07:37That's why I see a reflection of who we are,
07:40of the middle class, of people who work hard and do the best they can.
07:44They need a president who sees them, who has lived a life like theirs.
07:48And that's Kamala Harris, without a question.
07:51I think what you just said is exactly why so
07:53many Democrats were surprised with the answer that she gave initially on The View.
07:56Governor, it's very good to have you on.
07:58You have a very busy time ahead.
