00:00Before the opening of the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction,
00:05President Ferdinand R. Marquez, Jr. gave a dinner in Malacanang to the delegates.
00:11Here, the President emphasized the importance of not just being strong,
00:15but also being prepared to face calamities.

00:21The increasing and more severe climate change or change of weather,
00:30according to President Ferdinand R. Marquez, Jr.,
00:33requires deeper cooperation.
00:37That's why, at the ministerial dinner last night,
00:39the Executive Board of the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction
00:46gave the importance of the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.
00:48Sixteen countries from different parts of the world are present here
00:53including the top leaders of the government, civil society, private companies, and academies.
01:02The purpose of this conference is to discuss effective measures
01:05against the upcoming calamities
01:07to make our region stable and sustainable in the face of climate change.
01:13Through this conference, we are presented with the opportunity to explore
01:17new avenues of collaboration,
01:19especially in leveraging science and technology to alleviate the impact of climate change
01:25and ensuring that disaster risk reduction financing is accessible to all.
01:30The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction is the host of the event in the Philippines.
01:36According to the UN, natural hazards cannot be avoided,
01:40but it is up to us to stop the effects of these hazards on people and livelihoods.
01:47The role of the Philippines is important.
01:50The country has shown its resilience in the face of the climate crisis
01:54such as typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.
01:58That's why it is expected to share its vision and experience
02:03in helping communities in times of disaster.
02:06It's a lighthouse which will give inspiration to countries not just in Asia-Pacific
02:12but beyond Asia-Pacific to across the world.
02:15All the work the policy wants to, the technical experts do,
02:19has to all come together at the level of communities.
02:23This recognition is nowhere more vibrant than in the Philippines.
02:29The second thing why the Philippines is a lighthouse,
02:33you work across sectors.
02:35The third, civil society engagement.
02:37It is expected to exchange best practices and invest in strategies
02:43to reduce the effects of climate change
02:47and deepen the friendship of each country.
02:51The meeting began yesterday and will last until October 18.
