00:00Hello, this is Filmovi Ukratko.
00:02Today we're reviewing a 1989 film called Lean on Me.
00:09In the 60s, Eastside High School is one of the most successful schools in Paterson, New Jersey.
00:14Joe continues to go to this school, and his class adores him,
00:17because he teaches children important things with love, but also fun competitions.
00:21One morning, his class is interrupted by his colleague Frank,
00:24who tells him to hold a meeting of the union executive committee without them.
00:28Angry, Joe goes to the meeting and shouts at everything that doesn't support his reform ideas,
00:33and always gives up as soon as the local government asks him to shut up.
00:36Tired of Joe's behavior, the school decides to transfer him to another school.
00:4020 years later, Eastside High School has fallen to the point where it is called a slaughterhouse of violence.
00:45The building itself has lost its shine, and the students don't know what a nice behavior means.
00:49Abuse and violence are in every corner.
00:51They don't listen to their teachers, so they even beat them when they try to intervene.
00:55Unauthorized substances are present, and the weapons are used as if they were sweets.
00:59Most of the students can't pass the minimum test of basic skills,
01:03and this is a bad sign for the mayor, Botman, who doesn't want to lose the school because of the state administration,
01:08which will cost him the election.
01:10Frank, now head of the school, and Mr. Rosenberg, lawyer of the school board,
01:14come to the only logical conclusion.
01:16They have to return Joe.
01:18Botman doesn't like this idea, but he approves it because there is no election.
01:22Frank and Rosenberg go to see Joe, offering him the position of director in Eastside,
01:26but Joe rejects him, explaining that he knows that the mayor wants to save himself, not the children.
01:31However, Frank urges him to reconsider,
01:33realizing that Joe has not made a difference with his crazy Joe routine so far,
01:37and that he shouldn't take it to the grave.
01:39The next day, Joe appears in Eastside as the new director.
01:42He holds a meeting with other teachers,
01:44and immediately puts his autocracy into play,
01:46saying that he is the only one who speaks at his meetings.
01:50After asking for a list with the names of every student involved in criminal activity,
01:54he orders the guard to clean the walls and forces every student to help him.
01:59Mr. Darnell, English teacher, is degraded to a football coach assistant.
02:04There will be guards in the hallways to help them stop the violence,
02:08and all the teachers have to concentrate on preparing the students for the next standardized test,
02:13because the school needs 75% approval, and last time they did less than 40%.
02:18Then Joe calls the school assembly,
02:20where all the students from the list are taken to the classroom.
02:24When Joe arrives, he runs into Canisha,
02:26who is happy to see him because he used to be the principal of her elementary school.
02:29Joe goes out to the pool and asks for silence,
02:31but no one pays attention to him,
02:33and the problematic students laugh when he begs them to sing a school song.
02:37Seeing them as irreparable, Joe decides to expel all the students,
02:41promising the rest of the children that no one will bother them anymore.
02:44Security removes all the students from the pool,
02:46and this is enough for everyone else to calm down,
02:48especially when Joe tells them that they could be next if they didn't learn.
02:52In the afternoon, Joe has a meeting with all the parents.
02:55Leona, the mother of one of the abused children,
02:57is angry because of what happened,
02:59and many parents support her.
03:01But Joe does not give up,
03:02and offers a speech about a few bad apples that ruined his whole body.
03:06He explains that he threw 300 children out to save 2,700,
03:10and that he promised God that he would save this school.
03:13This speech earned him the support of almost all parents,
03:16but Leona remains angry.
03:18The next day, Joe goes to school and finds the child waiting for him.
03:21Samson is expelled and now tries to tell Joe that he made a mistake,
03:24because he didn't do anything,
03:26but Joe knows that he is lying and takes him to the roof with him.
03:29Samson calls him a puppet because he didn't tell his parents that he was expelled,
03:32and tells him that he will be killed by consuming these illegal substances,
03:35so if he wants to die so badly, he should jump around.
03:38Samson obviously refuses and promises that it will get better,
03:41and Joe accepts to give him a second chance,
03:43but if he makes a mistake again, he will be expelled forever.
03:46During lunch, Joe goes from table to table,
03:48listening to what the students have to say,
03:50and offers them some advice.
03:52He is happy to see that Ray is wearing a suit,
03:54which is a great example of the difference between Samson and his friends,
03:57who dress inappropriately.
03:59When he notices that the girl is angry,
04:01Joe forces them to get up and calls out to all their parents,
04:04and then asks them to sing a school song.
04:07He also reminds the whole room
04:09that no one is allowed to leave during a school song,
04:12so when Darnell gets up to pick up the garbage,
04:14Joe sends him to his office.
04:16The kids don't know the lyrics,
04:18so Joe locked them up and told them
04:20that from now on, everyone should be ready to sing a school song on command,
04:23or there will be consequences.
04:25After that, Joe goes to the head of music culture, Elliot,
04:28to tell her about the new rule.
04:30Elliot accepts it, but she will teach the school song
04:33after she finishes her training for the upcoming concert of the choir in New York.
04:36The kids are currently practicing Mozart,
04:38and Elliot would like their work to be respected.
04:40She calls out to Joe, telling him that she doesn't like other adults
04:43who are opposed to her, and Joe reacts,
04:45leaving the concert and refusing the concert,
04:47so that the students can concentrate on the upcoming test.
04:50From now on, the pianist, Mrs. Powers,
04:52will be in charge of the music class.
04:54After that, during a meeting with Darnell,
04:56Joe is called out again.
04:58Darnell thinks that they are treating him like garbage,
05:00and wants the principal to remember that they are his students too.
05:03This ends with Darnell being suspended.
05:06The deputy principal, John, tries to force Joe to see the reason,
05:09explaining that Darnell is more than just a coach,
05:12and that no one understands what Joe is doing,
05:14but Joe says that he likes it.
05:16The day of the test comes,
05:18and all the students do their best,
05:20because their teachers are constantly following them.
05:22Joe doesn't want to wait long for the results,
05:24so he sends John to the school board,
05:26directly asking for a letter.
05:28One morning, a special presentation,
05:30for a local principal, is interrupted by an attack in the cafeteria.
05:33One of the excluded boys returns,
05:35and beats Ray, and has a knife.
05:37Joe quickly catches him and asks how he got in.
05:39Security tells him that someone probably let him in.
05:42At that moment, Joe decides that all the school doors
05:45will be locked and tied with chains.
05:47A little later, Joe discovers that
05:49Canisha is feeling anxious.
05:51She is a smart girl, but her grades were not good
05:53since she lost her place in life
05:55because her mother doesn't want her.
05:57Decided to help, Joe leads John
05:59to see Canisha's mother in her house.
06:01The mother explains that she had Canisha
06:03when she was a teenager, so she had to leave
06:05her normal life to work.
06:07The day tries to clean up,
06:09but it brings her a terrible state of mind.
06:11That's why she thought it would be better
06:13to send Canisha to a house for children,
06:15but she never stopped wanting her
06:17in her neighborhood, or loving her.
06:19Joe promises that he will help her
06:21find a better job and a better place to live
06:23until he returns Canisha and helps her
06:25to stay focused on her studies.
06:27Canisha gets closer to the newspaper,
06:29but she uses the opportunity to file a complaint
06:31to the school board.
06:33Frank punishes Joe for being so crazy,
06:35saying that he is organizing a group
06:37to get rid of him, and that the chief
06:39of the fire department is on his side.
06:41He thinks that Joe is alienating everything
06:43like he did with his wife, so he will
06:45write a letter of apology to Elliot and Darnell,
06:47because if Joe wants to be respected
06:49as an authority, he should start
06:51respecting authorities.
06:53Darnell is reinstated, but the problems
06:55continue. Joe is forced to leave
06:57while he is attacked by a stick.
06:59Joe tries to grow his concern
07:01because of this attitude, but as usual,
07:03it is ignored. To Joe's disappointment,
07:05the next time he sees Ray,
07:07is when the boy comes to apologize
07:09because he can't stay in this school anymore.
07:11Later, Joe finds Samson and his friends
07:13fooling around in the bathroom.
07:15He forces them to sing a school song,
07:17and he is shocked when he hears a beautiful
07:19performance in the style of a church choir.
07:21The boys admit that Powers taught them
07:23Joe goes to her to congratulate her,
07:25and begs her to learn this version of the song.
07:27The results of the practice test are coming,
07:29and Joe is disappointed when he sees
07:31that they have only reached 33%.
07:33He calls all the teachers in the gym
07:35and tells them that their inefficiency
07:37is to blame for these bad results,
07:39so he has to work harder.
07:41Joe wants to start a tutoring program
07:43and an extra reading course on Saturday,
07:45but the teacher points out that it is difficult
07:47to force children to come on the weekend.
07:49His plan is to go to every student's house
07:51and talk to their parents to get them involved,
07:53maybe even invite them to come
07:55if they don't know how to read.
07:57The next week, the teachers and students
07:59are working hard to prepare for the test,
08:01and Joe is as involved as possible with his students.
08:03This is still not enough for Leon,
08:05who, along with the fire extinguisher boss,
08:07goes to a direct conversation with Botman.
08:09Frank and Rosenberg try to defend Joe,
08:11but Botman throws them out of the meeting
08:13and reaches an agreement with Leon
08:15that she insures the city not to vote for him.
08:17Botman will let Joe go,
08:19but he has to support people for his campaign.
08:21Later in the bathroom,
08:23Botman tells the fire extinguisher boss
08:25that he will arrest Joe
08:27because of illegal chains after the test,
08:29unaware that Rosenberg is in one of the boxes
08:31and that he hears everything.
08:33Rosenberg informs Frank about this
08:35and they go to warn Joe,
08:37who quickly comes up with a plan.
08:39When the guards see that the boss is coming,
08:41he will call No. 10 over Wokitokia
08:43and the teachers can temporarily remove the chains.
08:45After that, Joe tries to talk to Joe
08:47and tells him that he would like to investigate this
08:49and that his deputy director should do these things
08:51and that he does not need all the time.
08:53At the end of the day,
08:55Joe asks Joe to move out,
08:57explaining how frustrating it is to work with him.
08:59She calls him a maniac who hates people
09:01who cannot fight for themselves
09:03and says that everyone feels that way,
09:05but they did not leave because they had children.
09:07Joe is not, however,
09:09his lack of respect and support for the teachers,
09:11so he wants to leave.
09:13The next day before the meeting,
09:15Joe tells the children
09:17about the bad reputation that the school has in the city,
09:19inspiring them to prove that they are not madmen.
09:21He also shows his gratitude to the teachers,
09:23for which he assigns Joe's recognition.
09:25Then Powers sings
09:27Lean on Me,
09:29and the children sing along with her,
09:31excited that they show the government
09:33that they are not inferior.
09:35Seeing how the whole school is gathering,
09:37Joe decides to stay.
09:39On the day of the test,
09:41the students with confidence meet again,
09:43and the robot finally gives permission
09:45to the fireman's boss to get a court order.
09:47In the meantime, the schoolgirl Nisha discovers
09:49that it is difficult,
09:51but her boyfriend does not believe that he is her father,
09:53even if she insists that he is the only boyfriend she has ever had.
09:55Joe offers his support
09:57and promises that he will find some other alternatives,
09:59but their conversation is interrupted
10:01by the guard who announces the arrival
10:03of the fireman's commissioner with Leon and the journalists.
10:05Showing the number 10,
10:07Joe tries to remove the chains,
10:09but the boss is ready and has a video of this number,
10:11leaving Joe in the lead.
10:13That night, the school board holds a meeting.
10:15Frank tries to stop Joe's work,
10:17but Leon finds out that the school
10:19only got 33% during the practice test,
10:21which means that Joe did not actually
10:23succeed in his job.
10:25The meeting is interrupted
10:27when each individual student appears
10:29and demands that Joe be released.
10:31Botman knows it will look bad
10:33if he releases a man with such support,
10:35so he talks to Joe,
10:37asking him to tell the students to leave.
10:39Joe explains that the police are preparing to leave.
10:41If the students rebel,
10:43things can become violent.
10:45Joe accepts the conversation with them,
10:47but only because of their safety,
10:49and not because he thinks he's doing something bad.
10:51When he comes out, she talks to the children,
10:53but they only insult her and remind her
10:55of the things Joe did for the school.
10:57He is touched when he hears that he is called a father,
10:59but he is still worried about the police,
11:01so Joe takes over and reminds them to respect the law.
11:03His speech surprises and interrupts Joe,
11:05who brings the test results with excellent news.
11:07The school is over.
11:09While everyone is celebrating, Joe tells Botman
11:11that he and the state can go to hell.
11:13Joe stops his work,
11:15and the students finish the evening singing a school song.
11:17When it's time for the graduates to graduate,
11:19Joe shares diplomas with careful words
11:21adapted to each student.
