00:00Hello, this is Filmovi Ukratko.
00:02Today we're reviewing a film from 2002 called Red Planet.
00:06While Earth is suffering from an ecological crisis, scientists around the world are starting a project to terraform Mars to turn it into a planet for a new life.
00:15For more than 20 years, several probes have been sent to search for algae on a planet that can create a breathable atmosphere.
00:21The project was initially successful until the level of oxygen dropped drastically.
00:26The world community has formed a team of scientists who will visit Red Planet for the first time to find out what happened.
00:32Commander Kate Bowman is leading this mission, while Dr. Bud Chantilas is in the deputy's office.
00:37Officer Ted Santen is joining as a co-pilot.
00:40The other crew members are a terraforming specialist Dr. Chip Pettengill, geneticist Dr. Quinn Barchanal, and ship engineer Robby Gallagher.
00:5093 days of travel. The crew can no longer see the Earth from their station Mars 1.
00:56While walking on the ship, Gallagher tells Chantilas that his father would probably be against this mission because he doesn't like things that he didn't make with his own hands.
01:04Chantilas mentions that the Earth will soon change, and the arts, culture, religion, and all the other beautiful things will follow him if he leaves now.
01:12Chantilas turned to philosophy because he realized that science cannot answer his most important questions.
01:17When Gallagher entered the bathroom, he was embarrassed because he had just found Bowman coming out of the shower.
01:23Bowman in the other hand, not even to shake.
01:25He asks Gallagher to give him a walker and advises him to look at her as a sister.
01:29Gallagher mentions that he has two sisters, but none of them look like Bowman.
01:33After more than a hundred days, Gallagher makes a search for Amy, a military robot designed to help them with moving on Mars terrain.
01:41Pettengill tests Amy's military reflexes, but the robot does not respond.
01:45Gallagher decides to demonstrate the robot's abilities by changing the configuration to military mode and persuading him to attack Pettengill.
01:52Amy attacks Pettengill, but he is not harmed because Gallagher equipped the robot only with a pencil.
01:57Gallagher notices that the army has taken Amy hostage, but the robot is still capable of fighting.
02:03On the 182nd day, Mars 1 finally reaches the planet's orbit.
02:07While they are searching for the planet, they do not know if they have found a comfortable place, the gamma-ray HUB-1 hits the space station.
02:13Bowman immediately orders the crew to lean to safety, that is, not far from the radiation.
02:18When the situation calms down, the crew realizes that their powers are slowly weakening, and Bowman orders the crew to launch the MPV before they run out of electricity.
02:26After the crew has landed on the MPV, Bowman tries to start the auto-launcher system, but the system does not react because of the lack of energy, so Bowman leaves it to launch it manually.
02:36As soon as the MPV leaves the station, AI Lucille warns Bowman of several fires that are in various areas of the ship and the loss of artificial gravity.
02:45To make matters worse, the gamma-ray HUB-1 has destroyed their anti-fire devices. Bowman manages to put out the fire, but in other parts the fire has not yet been put out.
02:54In the meantime, Santen has difficulty landing with the MPV, and releases the landing gear, which also contains Amy.
03:02After Santen has left the outer space, the MPV lands on Mars, but rolls out of the canyon before it stops on flat terrain.
03:09Back on Mars 1, Bowman connects to the emergency evacuation unit and opens the door so as not to vacuum the fire from the ship.
03:16After returning inside, Bowman redirects energy to return the ship to artificial gravity and atmosphere.
03:23Without Amy, the crew has no way of navigating the planet.
03:27Gallagher compares the photo he has with the current terrain to locate HUB-1.
03:31While preparing for the descent, Chantilas says that he can't continue with them because his sled broke during a difficult landing.
03:39He notes that it is possible that they would not reach HUB-1 with the limited oxygen if they had to carry it.
03:44Chantilas tells Bowman not to worry about him, he is still happy that he saw Mars.
03:49While the crew was on their way, they did not find a sign of algae formation.
03:54Burchnell says that they would have to see traces of algae, even if they all died, but they do not see anything.
04:00Near their location, Amy falls out of the landing gear and launches drones that should find the crew.
04:06The crew finally finds HUB-1, but to their horror, the station is destroyed.
04:12Santen is terrified and does not know how this could not have caused any damage, because the station was tested and on the most extreme conditions.
04:19Bowman also sees through the monitors that HUB-1 is destroyed and contacts Houston to tell them that the crew cannot survive on Mars.
04:26With only 16 minutes left, the crew opens up about their life on Earth.
04:31Looking into the canyon, Pettengill tells Santen how to trust the return.
04:36He did not even have to be on the crew list.
04:38Santen believes that his ability to fly has nothing to do with their possible death, because destroying HUB-1 means that it does not matter where they would land.
04:48Pettengill explains that Santen should still take some responsibility, but Santen is sure that he is not to blame.
04:53Pettengill admits that he came to Santen to offer him a favor, but Santen refuses and is arrogant.
04:59Frustrated, Pettengill hits him in the head.
05:02Santen loses balance and Pettengill tries to grab him, but does not succeed, and Santen falls off the ledge.
05:08Pettengill returns to HUB-1 and says how Santen killed himself by jumping off the ledge.
05:13Soon after, Gallagher is left without his helmet and begins to suffocate.
05:16After that, Pettengill and Burchenal are also left without their helmets.
05:21As Gallagher struggles with his breath, he takes off his helmet and finds out that he can breathe.
05:25Then everyone takes off their helmets, while Burchenal remembers how Santen could have been motivated to continue, but that he was almost there.
05:32Houston contacts Mars 1 and informs Bowman that the orbit of the station will be interrupted in 31 hours, but they assure him that they will help her to escape from Mars's orbit until then.
05:42While the crew on the ground are searching the area to see if they have found a radio transmitter, Burchenal realizes that they could use the radio on the vehicle that was sent here in 1997.
05:52But as the sun sets, the temperature would be too low to go into search now.
05:57He decides to wait until the morning.
05:59When it gets dark, Gallagher burns the rest of the fuel with HUB-1 to warm them up so they can sleep a little.
06:04Amy quickly finds the crew and Gallagher sees that he is slightly damaged.
06:08When Burchenal realizes that they can use Amy's navigation system, he suggests turning off the robot and taking the necessary equipment from it.
06:16Hearing this, the robot burns its defensive protocols.
06:19It defines the crew as a danger and attacks them.
06:23Gallagher tries to turn it off, but the robot throws it into the air.
06:27Burchenal tries to hit Amy with a large metal pipe, but the robot is cut into pieces.
06:32Amy breaks Burchenal's ribs and runs away.
06:35Gallagher finds out that the robot let them go just because he uses guerrilla fighting tactics.
06:40Burchenal is so damaged that he would only slow down the crew.
06:43He warns them that the robot will return and attack them one by one.
06:46Before the sun rises, the crew leaves HUB-1 in search of the vehicle.
06:50Bowman sends a new message to Houston, saying that he will continue the search for the crew before leaving Mars.
06:57When the crew found the vehicle on the ground, Gallagher discovers that their mission does not use the same frequency as the vehicle, but hopes that they can still succeed.
07:05The crew does not receive any feedback after two hours.
07:09Houston sends a message to Bowman, giving him instructions to change the frequency and tries to contact the ground.
07:15When Gallagher wanted to turn on the radio, he was surprised to hear Bowman's voice.
07:19Bowman is delighted because he finally hears them.
07:22Gallagher informs them that the Chantillas have passed by themselves and that they could join them because they no longer have water or food.
07:29Bowman tells them to be patient while she comes up with a rescue plan.
07:33Later, Bowman tells them to find an old Russian probe in space when it failed to launch.
07:38He notes that the probe's creator, Borokovsky, believes that it is still possible to launch it on the face of the Earth.
07:44They still have 19 hours to launch into space.
07:47If they stay longer, Mars 1 will not have enough fuel to return to Earth.
07:51Ending the conversation, Bowman remembers the time when Gallagher kissed her a little, when he complained that she turned his attention away when he came out of the shower.
07:59As the crew goes to the ground, Cassandra and Amy follow them from a distance.
08:03Pettengill notices the movement in front of them, but the others ignore it.
08:06Not far from the crew, several insects are moving on the ground and seem to go in the same direction as the crew.
08:12Later, Bowman contacts Gallagher and tells him that only two people can fit into space.
08:17Gallagher passes this information on to the others while they continue their journey.
08:21After a few hours, Burchenal can no longer walk alone because of his injuries, and Gallagher helps him.
08:27Soon, Bowman contacts the crew again and warns them of the ice storm approaching them.
08:32The trio hides in a small cave and waits for the storm to pass.
08:35Gallagher finally admits that only two people can carry space.
08:38He tells them that he will help them launch the probe and that he will stay behind.
08:42Pettengill doubts that they would let him into space because he knows that Burchenal assumes that he killed Santana.
08:47When the two men fall asleep, Pettengill takes the radio and rushes towards the probe.
08:52However, Amy intercepts him.
08:54Amy turns on the video monitor signal on Gallagher's hand so that they can watch the murder of Pettengill.
08:59On the way to return the radio, they discover algae growing on the ground.
09:02When Burchenal looks over Pettengill's body, he is confused because he sees that his chest is closed.
09:07He doesn't know that insects are crawling all over Pettengill's body.
09:11Burchenal tries to take off his helmet so that he can burn it, but he is trapped when the fire burns the insects on his body.
09:17Burchenal concludes that the insects are a type of worm that feeds on algae.
09:22They take two nematodes with them and they continue towards the probe.
09:26Burchenal concludes that Mars has an atmosphere because of the nematodes that feed on algae and thus release oxygen as a by-product.
09:33When they reach the valley full of algae, the nematodes attack Burchenal because of the blood that flows from his mouth.
09:38Burchenal throws his body to Gallagher and tells him that he will need it for the radiation.
09:43He also gives Gallagher the tube that holds the nematodes and tells him that it will bring him back to Earth.
09:48While the nematodes cover half of his body, Burchenal burns his body along with the insects.
09:53Bowman sees the fire and the radiation and contacts Gallagher to find out what is happening.
09:57Gallagher says that Burchenal sacrificed himself to burn the insects.
10:00Gallagher loses hope of returning to Earth, but Bowman persuades him to continue so that Burchenal's sacrifice would not be in vain.
10:06Bowman adds that if it is not for Burchenal, he will continue because of him.
10:10Gallagher climbs on the probe and sees Amy's drone that flies over the area.
10:14When he reaches space, Bowman instructs him how to activate the vehicle.
10:18Bowman reminds him that the probe should go all the way back to Earth, but since there is no food or water, he instructs him to fill up enough fuel so that the probe has enough power to reach orbit.
10:28As Gallagher repairs the machine, he realizes that it cannot start because the battery is exhausted.
10:33Gallagher tells Bowman to go because he will not have enough fuel to return to Earth if he stays.
10:38Gallagher informs Bowman that there is life on Mars.
10:41Burchenal suspects that the nematodes have the ability to produce oxygen and that it could save Earth.
10:47Gallagher tells Bowman that he will miss her and Earth.
10:50He regrets not kissing her before and Bowman agrees that it should be done.
10:54Soon, Gallagher loses contact with Bowman because the station is slowing down towards the other side of the planet.
11:00Immediately after that, Gallagher sees Amy's drone flying and realizes that he can use the robot's batteries as an alternative source of energy that will launch into space.
11:08Gallagher prepares space and awaits Amy's attack.
11:11He looks at the monitor in the sky to determine where Amy will attack, but the robot quickly extinguishes that possibility.
11:16When he came, the robot defined vital organs and decided to attack his heart.
11:20Amy rushes towards him, Gallagher manages to avoid the attack and launches aerial bursts of fuel, covers the robot and starts the fire.
11:27The robot activates self-destruction, but Gallagher takes the batteries before the drone comes to the robot.
11:32As soon as he grabs the batteries, the drone hits the robot, causing a huge explosion.
11:36While Bowman is preparing to leave Mars orbit, Gallagher uses the batteries to launch into space.
11:42Bowman interrupts the departure of the space station when he sees space approaching.
11:46Gallagher runs out of air as Bowman tries to return the probe.
11:50As Bowman grabs the probe, Gallagher is already out of consciousness.
11:53He immediately takes the probe to Mars 1 and starts CPR.
11:56When Gallagher regains consciousness, Bowman sends the AI back to Earth.
12:01He tells Gallagher how the inhabitants of Earth consider him a hero for everything he has gone through.
12:06When Bowman saw that he was holding a stone in his hand, she asked him if it was a souvenir.
12:10Gallagher, however, says that he is returning it back to Earth to give it to Chantilly's granddaughter.
12:15After a comment about how she changed her mind about him, Gallagher decides to kiss Bowman.
12:19In his diary, Bowman describes how he will now have 6 months to meet Gallagher before their landing on Earth.
