00:00:00Can you say hard hats folks? Hard hats, much pale steel to a boots.
00:00:08Anything short of a championship this year is a failure.
00:00:10Look at this boomer right here.
00:00:12You've just got so much talent here.
00:00:14Somebody said we need to apologize for Jalen.
00:00:16Can I pull the John? What are we apologizing for? What did we say? What did we do?
00:00:20Check it out guys. It's the Sama Celtics.
00:00:30Wow.
00:00:32Practicing basketball.
00:00:34Still going on in the summer.
00:00:36Here they are at RBAC working out.
00:00:38The Sama Celtics getting ready to take the court next week.
00:00:40There's no days off.
00:00:42Still getting my fix.
00:00:44No days off at the Garden Report and here at CLNS Media.
00:00:48We're back and we're hanging out with you guys.
00:00:50John Zanis, Bobby Manning, Jimmy Toscano.
00:00:54We've got a lot still.
00:00:56You know what's amazing?
00:00:58Normally by this point in the offseason you're just like...
00:01:02How much is there to talk about with a team that literally brought back its entire roster?
00:01:10But there's plenty to talk about with the Celtics.
00:01:14We'll get into it here.
00:01:16Jimmy Toscano has not weighed in on the Celtics ownership situation.
00:01:20Neither the breaking news of the sale nor the recent reporting done by the great and inimitable Dan Shaughnessy.
00:01:28Who stuck his beak in there and said, yeah, I'll report some.
00:01:30I'll figure some stuff out.
00:01:32Because nobody really understands why any of this is happening.
00:01:36We'll talk about the Celtics summer league roster and what we expect out of those guys coming up.
00:01:42And what we're looking for.
00:01:44Bobby will be headed to Vegas, of course.
00:01:46And check that all out.
00:01:48We'll talk about Jason Tatum who's still trying to prove to the world that he's awesome.
00:01:52Still doubters.
00:01:54People are still asking him.
00:01:56More doubters now, I think.
00:01:58The funniest thing about Tatum is people keep asking him if people will keep asking him if he's great.
00:02:04And he has no choice.
00:02:06The poor guy's got to answer it.
00:02:08He's got to answer it over and over again.
00:02:10They feel bad for him.
00:02:12As always, Garden Report powered by PrizePix, number one fantasy app in America.
00:02:16Pick more, pick less.
00:02:18It's that easy, babe.
00:02:20And get involved here in the action.
00:02:22WNBA, baseball, what have you.
00:02:24Football season right around the corner.
00:02:26So check it out.
00:02:28Pick more, pick less on your favorite players and get after it.
00:02:30Oh, sorry.
00:02:32Checking something else out here.
00:02:34100% deposit match.
00:02:36Use that code CLNS.
00:02:38Games, concerts, whatever you want.
00:02:40Authorized ticket vendor here.
00:02:42Game time.
00:02:44Download that game time app.
00:02:46Use the code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase.
00:02:48Terms do apply.
00:02:50Lots of concerts coming to town.
00:02:52Bobby dragged me for calling it Great Woods the other day, Jimmy.
00:02:54It's so generic saying the Xfinity whatever it is.
00:02:56I know.
00:02:58It sucks.
00:03:00Real ones know Great Woods, man.
00:03:02It's Great Woods and it's Harbor Light.
00:03:04It's not Leader Bank.
00:03:06Wow, that's even too old for Jimmy.
00:03:08Yeah, that's old.
00:03:10That's old.
00:03:12But that's okay.
00:03:14But let's get into it here with the, you know, as we talked about.
00:03:16News of the Celtics sale, which Jimmy Toscano has yet to weigh in on.
00:03:18And they're selling it.
00:03:20Yeah.
00:03:22Planning to make the team available for sale.
00:03:24So we're going to talk a little bit about that.
00:03:26That was the original deal here.
00:03:28That it's up for sale.
00:03:30And since then, couple interesting pieces of reporting.
00:03:32One of them.
00:03:34I mean, really one piece of it.
00:03:36Interesting reporting coming from Dan Shaughnessy.
00:03:38That is team.
00:03:40Little twist.
00:03:42One guy.
00:03:44One guy.
00:03:46One guy.
00:03:48Decided to make the team available for sale.
00:03:50That was the original deal here.
00:03:52That it's up for sale.
00:03:54One guy.
00:03:56One guy.
00:03:58Decided, hey, let me figure it out.
00:04:00Because nobody gets it.
00:04:02And I think the reason.
00:04:04Nobody understands why.
00:04:06And I think it's not one of those stories with fans.
00:04:08That's like a big deal necessarily.
00:04:10You know.
00:04:12It's a huge deal, John.
00:04:14No, I mean, meaning.
00:04:16It is and it isn't.
00:04:18This ownership group was going to run into the same financial uncertainty.
00:04:20That the next ownership group will.
00:04:22Whose hands it goes into.
00:04:24Is fine.
00:04:26But there's no.
00:04:28In the new NBA world.
00:04:30In the new sports ownership world.
00:04:32The next guy is going to be a ridiculous billionaire.
00:04:34Who doesn't want this team to make money.
00:04:36And wants it as some sort of vanity.
00:04:38A little extra toy.
00:04:40A sports car.
00:04:42Whatever it is.
00:04:44And then he can tell the world that he owns it.
00:04:46And then maybe it doubles in value again over time.
00:04:48But that's who it's going to.
00:04:50You would imagine.
00:04:52Because that's just the game now.
00:04:54Who's got 5 billion, 6 billion just laying around.
00:04:56Bored billionaires.
00:04:58Who either are going to buy a basketball team.
00:05:00Or try to frigging fly a rocket to the moon.
00:05:02Like that's what you do.
00:05:04If you've got a shit ton of money.
00:05:06You know.
00:05:08You maybe try to pedal like an aero bicycle around the world.
00:05:10You do some dumb shit.
00:05:12Some people buy basketball teams.
00:05:14So that's what's going to happen.
00:05:16But it still is interesting.
00:05:18We've got another question here on.
00:05:20Whose team was this?
00:05:22And it turns out it wasn't Wicks.
00:05:24Not by a long shot.
00:05:26A little twist.
00:05:28Nope.
00:05:30Nope.
00:05:32This guy's been just pretending the whole time.
00:05:34He's done a pretty good job of it too.
00:05:36He just like walked in the arena one day.
00:05:38And like everyone just assumed he was the owner.
00:05:40And he just went with it.
00:05:42Yeah.
00:05:44Okay.
00:05:46So Bobby.
00:05:48Your thoughts here.
00:05:50And we'll get into some of the stuff that Shaughnessy was able to unearth.
00:05:52With his minimal digging.
00:05:54But he still was able to get some stuff.
00:05:56But just your thoughts on.
00:05:58The shock.
00:06:00What's interesting to me Jimmy.
00:06:02And Bobby.
00:06:04The more you listen.
00:06:06Wicks did an interview recently.
00:06:08I think he's definitely a little embarrassed by it.
00:06:10But he did an interview.
00:06:12And kind of set the record straight on some stuff.
00:06:14I don't think.
00:06:16I wonder whether he even knew it was up for sale.
00:06:18Like I really don't.
00:06:20The whole thing is really interesting.
00:06:22I really don't know.
00:06:24Yeah.
00:06:26He was selling his team.
00:06:28Kind of reminds me of like Billy Madison a little bit.
00:06:30Like this guy that's just been like living off.
00:06:32Living off in the mansion.
00:06:34And just screwing around.
00:06:36But all joking aside.
00:06:38It is a bummer.
00:06:40Because I think we've all come to all agree.
00:06:42He was the best.
00:06:44I'll put owner in quotes now.
00:06:46Because I'm not quite sure.
00:06:48But he was the best owner in Boston.
00:06:50He was the best owner in Boston.
00:06:52Yeah exactly.
00:06:54He was more of like a shift supervisor.
00:06:56Yeah exactly.
00:06:58He was an overseer of the land if you will.
00:07:00Assistant to the owner maybe.
00:07:02Is a good one.
00:07:04But he cared about the team.
00:07:06He obviously cared about putting a winning product.
00:07:08And yeah he needed dad to sign the line.
00:07:10He won two championships.
00:07:12With his owners.
00:07:14Under his majority ownership.
00:07:16Stewardship.
00:07:18Yeah we'll call it stewardship.
00:07:20And has the team in a good position to do it again.
00:07:22Cares about the team.
00:07:24Is a fan.
00:07:26And like you said John.
00:07:28The next guy who buys it.
00:07:30Unless it's pegs.
00:07:32Which I think.
00:07:34I guess there's an outside chance that could happen.
00:07:36If he gets maybe some people around him.
00:07:38Who?
00:07:40That looks at this team as an investment.
00:07:42Am I there?
00:07:44Yeah you're back.
00:07:46You glitched out for a second.
00:07:48Fears that it goes to a guy that doesn't actually care about the team.
00:07:50And looks at it as a way to make money.
00:07:52And turn a profit.
00:07:54And blah blah blah.
00:07:56And with the way that the CBA is.
00:07:58And all this stuff.
00:08:00And all the complications.
00:08:02And the second apron.
00:08:04And the tax money that goes to it.
00:08:06If you want a guy that's going to care about.
00:08:08Putting together a winning team.
00:08:10And is willing to pay.
00:08:12A guy like Hauser.
00:08:14For an example.
00:08:16All the extra money that it's going to take to pay him.
00:08:18If it's somebody that doesn't care about that.
00:08:20Or doesn't think that's a good investment.
00:08:22Because he's not going to draw people in the same way.
00:08:24Or the marketing behind it.
00:08:26Then you might have a bit of an issue.
00:08:28Now I tried to keep Wick as the owner.
00:08:30I don't know if you guys saw.
00:08:32I did Venmo him.
00:08:34I found his Venmo.
00:08:36I sent him a buck.
00:08:38There it is.
00:08:40There it actually is.
00:08:42So I did my part.
00:08:44I thought I could get the train rolling.
00:08:46If everybody gives a dollar.
00:08:48Two dollars.
00:08:50Maybe we can get enough money in Wick's pockets.
00:08:52Where he can say.
00:08:54Hey dad.
00:08:56Here's what I can offer you.
00:08:58And maybe we can delay this a little bit longer.
00:09:00But I don't know if it took off the way it did.
00:09:02And everyone thought I was joking.
00:09:04When I said.
00:09:06We got to start a GoFundMe for Wick.
00:09:08I've been saying this for years John.
00:09:10On this show haven't I.
00:09:12We got to start the GoFundMe.
00:09:14Because Wick is poor.
00:09:16I kept saying it.
00:09:18Wick is poor.
00:09:20And you kept saying it too John.
00:09:22He has no actual money.
00:09:24All his worth is tied to this team.
00:09:26We were even wrong about that.
00:09:28It's not even his worth tied to this team.
00:09:30He's going to be fine in a few years.
00:09:32Unfortunately for him.
00:09:34That's unfortunate.
00:09:36He's part of the estate.
00:09:38The announcement from the team.
00:09:40He's going to be fine.
00:09:42I'm not worried about him.
00:09:44It's part of the estate planning.
00:09:46Wick is part of the estate planning.
00:09:48I want to make sure each of my kids gets a slice of this.
00:09:50He's going to be fine.
00:09:52He is going to be fine.
00:09:54That was Jimmy.

00:21:36Jimmy tried.
00:21:38And that's a value, right?
00:21:40So, will there be a long line, Jimmy?
00:21:42Yeah.
00:21:44I mean, these opportunities
00:21:46are few and far between, and I think
00:21:48they'll probably become even fewer and far between
00:21:50as these bigger
00:21:52pocketed owners
00:21:54buy them up.
00:21:56They're not looking to buy them and
00:21:58give up on them, and these investments
00:22:00are, I mean, look at how much they've grown
00:22:02in value over the last, you know,
00:22:04five years even, you know?
00:22:06So, when an opportunity arises, especially
00:22:08one like this Boston Celtics storied
00:22:10franchise, everyone knows, I don't have to go over
00:22:12the resume of
00:22:14a franchise like that, but there's
00:22:16so much
00:22:18to owning this team
00:22:20more than just a basketball
00:22:22team, right? I mean, you've got the story,
00:22:24the franchise aspect behind
00:22:26it, worldwide
00:22:28aspect of marketing
00:22:30and fandom.
00:22:32It's probably going
00:22:34to be one of the best opportunities
00:22:36over the next decade or so, sports-wise
00:22:38in terms of owning a team. So, I would
00:22:40expect there to be a long line,
00:22:42Bobby, but I would also, like as John said,
00:22:44you know, how long can the line
00:22:46be? There's going to be guys at the very top
00:22:48that have, you know,
00:22:50$6 billion to drop on
00:22:52this team, and there's not going to be a lot of those people
00:22:54available, but certainly everyone's
00:22:56going to want a piece of the pie. I'm sure there's going to
00:22:58probably try to be people
00:23:00jumping in in a way that they
00:23:02can and try to form a team
00:23:04of some sort, a group of
00:23:06owners, like, you know, one that's
00:23:08disbanding here,
00:23:10but it's going to be, it's going to come down to,
00:23:12listen, Irving
00:23:14obviously did something right over his
00:23:16lifetime, made a lot of good
00:23:18business decisions. He's not going to go
00:23:20out making a bad one, let's put it that way.
00:23:24So, the top names, John, on the list
00:23:26when the odds came out. Whip will end up with
00:23:28court-sized seats, by the way. We'll be okay.
00:23:30I'm sure we'll see him.
00:23:32It'll kind of be like Cuban, right? We didn't see
00:23:34Cuban much during the finals. He wasn't
00:23:36really as much of a face, but I'm
00:23:38sure he's still around and still invited.
00:23:40That's the other thing, is Whip going to buy in
00:23:42himself to some degree again, maybe as a
00:23:44smaller owner? I don't know, but the
00:23:46names that came out
00:23:48at the top of the odds immediately were
00:23:50Larry Ellison,
00:23:52Oracle, Pagliuca,
00:23:54Abigail Johnson,
00:23:56who I think's local fidelity,
00:23:58Jacobs, which I don't know.
00:24:00I don't see that. And, of course, Fenway
00:24:02Sports Group as well, which, John,
00:24:04obviously, they poured a little cold water
00:24:06on that possibility in an interview recently
00:24:08as well, saying they're not looking to expand
00:24:10right now. I would like colder
00:24:12water poured on, just to be sure.
00:24:14Yeah. Yeah.
00:24:16Maybe it's too much for them.
00:24:18I don't know. Or maybe Vegas
00:24:20is a better option for them eventually.
00:24:22And Shaughnessy wrote in his article, he didn't
00:24:24believe Henry would be part of it because he's not
00:24:26going to come in here and pay rent to Jacobs.
00:24:28You know, and he wants, he wants
00:24:30that bigger thing. And Bobby mentioned it too, where like
00:24:32it doesn't, I wouldn't
00:24:34go as far as say devalue the asset,
00:24:36but it is a thing, you know, and that's why
00:24:38people started to think, well, casino
00:24:40money, Steve, we
00:24:42could somebody do something like that?
00:24:44Interesting to not see that in there. Yeah.
00:24:46That not being involved in the odds,
00:24:48I wonder if it's just because they are
00:24:50the odds, you know, like
00:24:52I don't know if you can include them
00:24:54in that.
00:24:56You know?
00:24:58Right. That's a good point.
00:25:00And Bezos.
00:25:02How do you feel about Bezos?
00:25:04Again,
00:25:06he'd be a guy that doesn't care at all about the
00:25:08franchise, but he's got, does it matter
00:25:10to him what he spends on
00:25:12a roster? Someone saying
00:25:14like, please, no, no, no, Ellison.
00:25:16I don't want a bad billionaire.
00:25:18Are there good billionaires?
00:25:20So here's the
00:25:22question, right?
00:25:26Do you want local
00:25:28guy, local ties,
00:25:30passionate interest in the area of the team?
00:25:32Do you want
00:25:34a group of many different people,
00:25:36which always gets messy?
00:25:38Or do you want a Bezos
00:25:40type who it just has the deepest
00:25:42pockets possible, but
00:25:44might be aloof or out of the mix
00:25:46or out of the picture or
00:25:48just makes more bigger financial
00:25:50decisions that go beyond the team
00:25:52here. So there's three different
00:25:54ways that can go.
00:25:56It's going to be
00:25:58interesting because they have tough decisions
00:26:00to make, Jimmy, money-wise
00:26:02here, within a year.
00:26:04I know. I mean,
00:26:06I don't know really what Pags is
00:26:08rolling with, but he'd be my first choice, assuming
00:26:10that he can keep
00:26:12funding the roster,
00:26:14I guess. I don't know.
00:26:16This tax stuff scares the crap out of
00:26:18me. It's outrageous, the amount of money that
00:26:20a guy like Houser would be on the hook for.
00:26:22They're not going to pay that much tax.
00:26:24They're just not.
00:26:26Who's they?
00:26:28The team,
00:26:30as it stands.
00:26:32Right, but if it's Bezos, for example,
00:26:34is he more likely to? Because if that's the
00:26:36answer, if they're designing
00:26:38this so that the richest of
00:26:40the richest are going to have an advantage over
00:26:42Joe Schmo owner,
00:26:44then I guess give me the richest of the
00:26:46richest, and hopefully they hire guys
00:26:48underneath them that do care about
00:26:50the team. Bezos could hire Wick
00:26:52for all I care, and Wick can run
00:26:54the show the same way he runs it for
00:26:56Irving. I mean, what would be the difference?
00:26:58I mean, it's the same thing.
00:27:00He won't be able to pretend
00:27:02he owns it.
00:27:04Right, that's true. He won't.
00:27:06Give him some fancy title and
00:27:08he can... Wick has to stay
00:27:10involved in some capacity, you would think,
00:27:12but it's going to be a small, small one.
00:27:14I don't know if he will. I mean,
00:27:16does it matter at that point?
00:27:18Yeah.
00:27:20I don't know. I mean, I guess
00:27:22the smart answer is just give me the guy with the deepest
00:27:24pockets and hope that he's willing
00:27:26to pay. Owners do
00:27:28one thing. Pay
00:27:30for stuff. That's it.
00:27:32And then nothing.
00:27:34Do we care about Jeremy Jacobs? No.
00:27:36I don't want a guy at the center.
00:27:38I don't want a guy talking. I don't want a guy
00:27:40taking credit. I don't want a guy doing
00:27:42interviews. Nothing.
00:27:48There's a strange way Irv was the best.
00:27:50Like, yeah.
00:27:52Exactly. Give me a guy like Irv.
00:27:54He did nothing on camera.
00:27:56Every time Kraft speaks, I'm like,
00:27:58zip it. Every time Henry emails
00:28:00an answer to somebody because he won't
00:28:02talk to humans anymore.
00:28:04It's always the wrong thing
00:28:06and it's totally tone deaf. I don't want
00:28:08Jerry Jones doing frigging locker room
00:28:10press conferences after games.
00:28:12The last thing you want is hands-on.
00:28:14Last thing you want is someone
00:28:16charging to the front and like,
00:28:18here I am. I want
00:28:20none of that. Just
00:28:22a blank checkbook
00:28:24and stay in the background.
00:28:26That's it.
00:28:28Amazon jungle,
00:28:30guys.
00:28:32I don't know how much
00:28:34winning matters to some of these owners
00:28:36that, for example, a team like the Celtics.
00:28:38Yeah, it's all about
00:28:40ticket sales, I guess.
00:28:42They're going to sell tickets, right?
00:28:44Let's be honest.
00:28:46They're going to keep their star, guys,
00:28:48you would imagine.
00:28:50They're going to be marketable across the world.
00:28:52There's money to be made regardless of how well
00:28:54they do. I obviously want
00:28:56an owner with deep pockets who's willing to spend
00:28:58but I want them to care
00:29:00about it too. I just don't know if you can have the best of both
00:29:02worlds. Whatever.
00:29:04You want to have the best of every world.
00:29:06Yeah, and it's...
00:29:08I remember what a
00:29:10absolute... I was working in news
00:29:12and sports at the time of the
00:29:14Celtics, of the
00:29:16Red Sox sale.
00:29:18What a frigging... I know the WIC came in
00:29:20around that time too but the Red Sox
00:29:22sale was an absolute
00:29:24fiasco.
00:29:26Like, hilarious. Like,
00:29:28drama, politics,
00:29:30last minute this and that.
00:29:32It was such
00:29:34theater. I don't
00:29:36know if this is shaping up for that but it is
00:29:38interesting because we don't know
00:29:40anything and that's
00:29:42what's strange.
00:29:44The most boring and hopefully
00:29:46for most people
00:29:48thing that could be
00:29:50done is continuity. The Pags
00:29:52handover. I'm just dubious that that's
00:29:54what's happening here.
00:29:56That's the easiest thing.
00:29:58I think it should be too.
00:30:00But there is no should. I don't think
00:30:02they're looking at it as what's right by the fans.
00:30:04That's just lip service. Like, we want
00:30:06to bring in somebody who cares and
00:30:08this guy's a good guy and this guy's
00:30:10a good guy. It doesn't.
00:30:12It's money. They're
00:30:14cashing out for the biggest chunk
00:30:16so some guy could come up
00:30:18and be like... could literally
00:30:20outbid by $2 billion.
00:30:22It's like...
00:30:24We assume it's going to be five or six
00:30:26and Pags is scraping together a group
00:30:28to get the $5.2 billion
00:30:30and he thinks that'll get it done.
00:30:32Somebody comes up and he's like, 7.5.
00:30:34Can I have it now? And that's it. That's the ballgame.
00:30:36There's no
00:30:38it should go
00:30:40to somebody. It's going to the money.
00:30:42It's going to the money.
00:30:44Right. And there's real concern with that.
00:30:46Because whoever comes in, if they
00:30:48want to do that, can make whatever
00:30:50order they want. If they have that kind of money,
00:30:52that kind of pull. If they want to insert themselves to
00:30:54that level, they can.
00:30:56And we just saw it. Minnesota.
00:30:58They transfer owners.
00:31:00I know there's a little messy period in between
00:31:02but basically upon
00:31:04Lurie and A-Rod buying that team,
00:31:06they traded for Rudy Gobert.
00:31:08Upon Ishbia buying the Suns,
00:31:10all of a sudden Bridges and
00:31:12Johnson are out the door and it's Katie
00:31:14and Bradley Beal and Chris Paul is out too.
00:31:16And those all seem to be
00:31:18ownership orchestrated kind of moves.
00:31:20So...
00:31:22If you get the
00:31:24wrong person in here
00:31:26who wants to have that kind of Jerry Jones
00:31:28effect like you said, John, it might be great that they have
00:31:30the money that can keep this
00:31:32sustainable. But they might have
00:31:34some other ideas than Brad Stevens does
00:31:36about how things should go.
00:31:38The one thing working in
00:31:40PAG's favor, potentially,
00:31:42is the
00:31:44notion that it's getting done.
00:31:46Like Wick said in his interview,
00:31:48it's getting done fairly.
00:31:50The 51% is
00:31:52changing hands fairly soon.
00:31:54And that leads one to believe
00:31:56that
00:31:58they have an idea
00:32:00who that's going to be because how could you know?
00:32:02You know?
00:32:04It takes a while to put together
00:32:06groups and offers and this and that
00:32:08and you're not hearing anybody charging
00:32:10to the forefront.
00:32:12The other part of me makes me wonder,
00:32:16does everybody know that 51%
00:32:18is going to PAG's and his group and Wick's
00:32:20going to be part of that and it's going to be a new structure
00:32:22and whatever it is and that'll be that.
00:32:24And then the 49% will get sold
00:32:26and
00:32:28Wick will pay for his portion
00:32:30of the 51%.
00:32:32Would there be any reason
00:32:34they couldn't say that?
00:32:36Who the hell knows in terms
00:32:38of equity
00:32:40to all the partners
00:32:42and creating this fair environment. If you do
00:32:44a capital call,
00:32:46throw in who wants to raise their stake
00:32:48X percent, you got to allow everybody
00:32:50equal. There could be some
00:32:52things behind the scenes that they're just
00:32:54bound to, but I don't
00:32:56know anything about the sale
00:32:58of a frigging, you know, anything like this
00:33:00to this level. So there might be stuff
00:33:02behind the scenes that prevents them from doing it, but it might
00:33:04also be that, yeah,
00:33:06the new ownership structure will be a group
00:33:08led by PAG's that Wick's also
00:33:10going to be a part of or I don't honestly,
00:33:12you never know.
00:33:14I think there would be a better
00:33:16way of communicating that even within
00:33:18legalities and all of that, then
00:33:20we're going to have a bidding process
00:33:22here and
00:33:24by Wick's account here, he hasn't made
00:33:26any indication that he's going to be part of this whole
00:33:28thing here. And again, it's encouraging
00:33:30that the first name we hear is Pagliuca
00:33:32because I think that's
00:33:34the name that appeals to everybody
00:33:36here the most. What makes the most
00:33:38sense to me in this entire equation
00:33:40is that
00:33:42the 51% that's being sold,
00:33:44just doing the math here,
00:33:46the 51% that's being
00:33:48sold is what belongs to the Grousbeck
00:33:50family. That's the thing that makes
00:33:52the most sense. So they can sell
00:33:54their 51% for whatever they want
00:33:56and everybody else can stay there
00:33:58or up their stake or do whatever they want
00:34:00to do to maybe make themselves
00:34:02majority owners. I don't really necessarily
00:34:04know, but
00:34:06it could be as easy as the 49%
00:34:08who own the rest of it
00:34:10just buying 2%
00:34:12more or whatever
00:34:14it is, just to get themselves up to
00:34:1651% and calling it a day and that's
00:34:18the end of that.
00:34:20It's so confusing.
00:34:22If they're selling it at 51% and 49%,
00:34:24it makes me believe the
00:34:26Grousbeck family owns that 51%
00:34:28and they're going to sell that.
00:34:30We'll go back to the fact that Pagliuca
00:34:32signed the NDA.
00:34:34What would they say was going to happen
00:34:36in 2028 or something like that?
00:34:38Grousbeck stays on as
00:34:40governor until then.
00:34:42So they're only selling
00:34:44half, 51% of the team?
00:34:46Right now and then 49%
00:34:48later, but the controlling
00:34:50interest is going to go fairly soon.
00:34:52So again, you wonder whether it's a done
00:34:54deal or not and it would make sense if it's a done deal
00:34:56that it is shifting
00:34:58to internal
00:35:00partners right now and a restructuring
00:35:02of the current ownership group or something
00:35:04to that effect. I don't know.
00:35:06That would make some
00:35:08sense.
00:35:10Let's talk about the money here
00:35:12because Tatum signs his
00:35:14extension over the last week
00:35:16here. White signs
00:35:18his extension. Holiday did
00:35:20last year. Brown did last year. So you
00:35:22basically have five guys
00:35:24who you've committed a billion dollars to
00:35:26here collectively.
00:35:28Is that
00:35:30something they're just passing
00:35:32on to the next ownership group here?
00:35:34Are they going to be forced
00:35:36to cut costs before things transfer?
00:35:38I think that's the next question here because
00:35:40I think all the fans care about
00:35:42maybe there's a
00:35:44little interest in who owns the team.
00:35:46That's just palace intrigue, right?
00:35:48It's really about are you
00:35:50going to gut the roster? Can you keep all of these guys
00:35:52or are you going to have to start cost
00:35:54cutting in a year potentially here?
00:35:58What do you think, John? That's the million dollar
00:36:00question. I've always
00:36:02believed... Jimmy, your take.
00:36:04I have my thoughts.
00:36:06It's hard for me to say.
00:36:08Honestly, I think that they are going to
00:36:10get rid of some guys.
00:36:12I think they're going to just try to re-up it for one
00:36:14more year, see what they can do, and then
00:36:16they have some hard decisions they're going to make. I know
00:36:18what John's going to say. He's always thought
00:36:20that they're going to probably get rid
00:36:22of that Jaylen Brown contract.
00:36:24I think that's what he was going to say.
00:36:26No, no, no. That's not what I think.
00:36:28That's not what you think?
00:36:30Not definitively, no. But I have
00:36:32some thoughts. I don't
00:36:34see them just ignoring all these aprons
00:36:36and just paying absorbent tax money.
00:36:38Even the Warriors
00:36:40Clippers and Nets wouldn't do it.
00:36:42The Celtics aren't going to.
00:36:44I don't see that happening.
00:36:46That wasn't why it was put in place. It wasn't
00:36:48put in place for teams to just blow by it and
00:36:50ignore it. It was put in place
00:36:52to really make you
00:36:54think
00:36:56very clearly about what you were
00:36:58doing. Is it good or bad
00:37:00for the league? I guess we'll find out.
00:37:02It sounds like they're all about trying
00:37:04to get parity. Is that going to prevent
00:37:06guys from sticking around
00:37:08teams that they'd like to stick
00:37:10around with, the hometown guy
00:37:12or whatever, for a longer period
00:37:14of time? Is there going to be less loyalty
00:37:16now?
00:37:18I know obviously times are
00:37:20changing and there's a lot less of that than
00:37:22there used to be. It's not really
00:37:24anybody's fault. It's just the way of the world now.
00:37:26But it is going to be interesting
00:37:28over the next few years to see how that changes the dynamic
00:37:30of the league. Does it prevent super teams
00:37:32from forming and lasting?
00:37:34Is Celtics
00:37:36going to be the last real one
00:37:38based on the way that they're
00:37:40designed? I would say that
00:37:42I've always thought that
00:37:44they've had a two or three-year window with this roster
00:37:46and then they're going to blow it up.
00:37:48Maybe they keep Tatum. Maybe they try to keep Brown.
00:37:50The rest of those guys are not
00:37:52worth, quite frankly,
00:37:54the tax that comes along
00:37:56with them.
00:37:58Yeah.
00:38:00There's no question
00:38:02they're going back. Everybody's doing it.
00:38:04Even Steve Ballmer and his $121 billion.
00:38:06It was shocking
00:38:08what he did.
00:38:10Honestly, it's like the John Henry
00:38:12approach. You look
00:38:14at a team and you see
00:38:16that they're going to be mired in
00:38:18mediocrity and it's not worth
00:38:20spending into the tax. You just say,
00:38:22no, I'm not doing it.
00:38:24It's what John Henry has done to
00:38:26a ridiculous extent with the Red Sox
00:38:28is, I'm looking at the team
00:38:30here and I don't see it. What am I going
00:38:32to go spend $40 million,
00:38:34$30 million on a starting pitcher
00:38:36when this team
00:38:38doesn't have a core that's going to contend
00:38:40right now? I'd rather just save that
00:38:42for later and use it when we have
00:38:44an actual shot. The question is, will he
00:38:46use it when they have an actual shot? Nobody
00:38:48knows that, but the philosophy
00:38:50is sound.
00:38:52A couple of years ago, we were talking about
00:38:54the injury deadline and this and that.
00:38:56The team looked
00:38:58cooked. Did you want to dish all
00:39:00of your assets for the four-year
00:39:02year, for example?
00:39:04Everyone wants
00:39:06people to go for it and to spend
00:39:08into the tax. Sure, fans would rather
00:39:10have Paul George than not have Paul George,
00:39:12but you look at it and be like,
00:39:14we're aging and we're
00:39:16mid and we're not going anywhere. We're not
00:39:18contending with these top teams. There's
00:39:20three teams better than us. Four teams
00:39:22that walking in the gym are better than us,
00:39:24even if we have full health. There's
00:39:26nothing we can do. Back to
00:39:28that Red Sox comparison,
00:39:30Paul George becomes
00:39:32Derrick Jones and
00:39:34whatever else the Clippers went out and did
00:39:36with that money. Yeah, you go backwards. It stinks.
00:39:38You turn Mookie Betts into frigging, what's
00:39:40his name? That idiot with the Yankees
00:39:42right now. Jeter Downs.
00:39:44Verdugo. No, that other frigging idiot.
00:39:46Verdugo. I'm not saying
00:39:48directly, but that's who's patrolling the outfield
00:39:50instead of Mookie, the frigging bum.
00:39:52Yeah, you go backwards.
00:39:54You take big hits there, but you have
00:39:56to because you got to take one step backward
00:39:58to take two steps forward. My theory is
00:40:00and has always been
00:40:02this was a two-year window
00:40:06and that's why they're loading back up for
00:40:08next year. The idea is that
00:40:10we'll get to
00:40:12through this season before the penalties
00:40:14start and then we got to get going.
00:40:16Again, you got to factor in a couple things like
00:40:18expansion. When is that happening?
00:40:20Are you going to leave a big
00:40:22money player open in expansion draft?
00:40:24Boy, is that a great way to clear out some cap.
00:40:26Is Drew Holliday the number one pick
00:40:28of the Las Vegas? I don't know.
00:40:32There's something there where you can potentially
00:40:34eliminate some money, but
00:40:36poor Zingas, you might have to move
00:40:38off of him after next year or trade
00:40:40his expiring. The worst
00:40:42part about it is you might have to
00:40:44got a contending
00:40:46team. That's
00:40:48the nightmare.
00:40:50You win it again
00:40:52and then you're like, so now
00:40:54I got to make cost-cutting moves and you just
00:40:56start selling off parts.
00:40:58That's a disaster. Best case
00:41:00scenario is, not best case,
00:41:02if your goal is to shed,
00:41:04you need to have a bad year,
00:41:06an injury to one of your stars,
00:41:08you're 10 games out,
00:41:10Tatum's going to miss the first three rounds of the playoffs.
00:41:12You look
00:41:14at it and you're like, all right, we're not
00:41:16going anywhere this year, now I got to trade.
00:41:18Then you can walk away clean
00:41:20and be like, look, it just wasn't our year
00:41:22and we're looking towards next year.
00:41:24You win it next year, you get back to the
00:41:26finals and you enter the next season,
00:41:28you can't just start dropping
00:41:30guys.
00:41:32The options are great.
00:41:34You'll love it if you're the fans
00:41:36because you're like, just keep it coming.
00:41:38If your goal is to eventually get off that second apron
00:41:40and stop paying this...
00:41:42We're talking about a $450 million
00:41:44payroll.
00:41:46Nobody wants that. I don't care how
00:41:48rich you are.
00:41:50Somebody's going to find a way to get under that
00:41:52and it's going to hurt.
00:41:54It's going to be a shave.
00:41:56Unless you're that
00:41:58bonafide contender and you want to do it for
00:42:00one year, maybe two,
00:42:02whoever the new ownership group is.
00:42:04You might have to run it back one more year, then Chris
00:42:06Tapps goes off the books and you lose a little.
00:42:08That's
00:42:10been the interesting thing this summer is to see
00:42:12how it all works out.
00:42:14Across the board, I was expecting
00:42:16some money dumping moves and
00:42:18maybe some of the teams with cap space would absorb
00:42:20guys from other spots that they couldn't
00:42:22keep paying.
00:42:24I guess that happened in the LA-Philadelphia situation
00:42:26with George. George basically
00:42:28just left the Clippers and went into that
00:42:30Philly cap space, even though there was no trade involved
00:42:32between the two. But you didn't
00:42:34see Minnesota dump a Towns
00:42:36this summer. You didn't see some of those
00:42:38other high-cost teams
00:42:40move a medium to high-level
00:42:42contract there to try to keep their roster
00:42:44more sustainable. What ended up happening is
00:42:46guys mostly just left
00:42:48their teams in free agency.
00:42:50Denver let Caldwell Pope walk.
00:42:52LA let George walk.
00:42:54The Warriors
00:42:56just let Chris Paul walk.
00:42:58Teams pretty much just let guys go.
00:43:00You didn't have these sign-in trades to try to
00:43:02save face a little bit. I guess the Bulls did
00:43:04with DeRozan. But across the board,
00:43:06teams pretty much just let guys go.
00:43:08Free agency became a little bit more of a thing here.
00:43:10That's going to be the question
00:43:12with the Celtics. You've
00:43:14signed all these guys to give
00:43:16yourself the best possible options
00:43:18when the time comes if you need to move one of them.
00:43:20Or you end up moving the guy who
00:43:22looks the worst in that situation.
00:43:24Maybe attaching some picks or whatever.
00:43:26But that didn't really happen this offseason,
00:43:28Jon. Teams, outside
00:43:30of some small examples like Tim Hardaway
00:43:32or some
00:43:34other money-moving deals, Devontae
00:43:36Graham, there weren't really
00:43:38poor zinguses or
00:43:40holidays moved this summer in terms
00:43:42of cost-saving.
00:43:44Is that even going to be possible?
00:43:46There are teams in the league that want to tank right now.
00:43:48The Nets don't want a Drew Holliday.
00:43:50The Pistons don't yet want
00:43:52a poor zingus.
00:43:54When that time comes,
00:43:56you might either just be paying for those
00:43:58guys or letting them go.
00:44:00Yeah.
00:44:02That might be it. The worst thing
00:44:04in the past was always
00:44:06you can't let the asset go.
00:44:08You can't replace it because you're
00:44:10so far over the cap. You have to
00:44:12maintain it even if you are getting dinged on
00:44:14taxes. But the only way to get cheap
00:44:16might be literally just to
00:44:18let them go.
00:44:20Poor zingus just walks.
00:44:22That's $30 million plus all of the
00:44:24tax you're paying.
00:44:26That's huge cap relief
00:44:28in two years. But it's two years away.
00:44:30Nothing is stopping this train
00:44:32from freaking
00:44:34smashing into the station
00:44:36in 25-26.
00:44:38North Station.
00:44:40They can't get off
00:44:42of that. There's no way
00:44:44even if you trade stuff, you need matching
00:44:46salary. You'd have to trade
00:44:48multiple pieces
00:44:50now
00:44:52to be clear by 25-26.
00:44:54How are you getting off
00:44:56that? You're not. Whoever's coming
00:44:58in here owning this team is paying that bill
00:45:00in year one and then reducing
00:45:02later. How can you get
00:45:04off that?
00:45:06Poor zingus is the first
00:45:08one.
00:45:10Maybe he's
00:45:12expiring.
00:45:16Why would you trade an expiring for an expiring?
00:45:18Poor zingus is the first bit
00:45:20of money.
00:45:22That's the first
00:45:24one.
00:45:26That's the first one
00:45:28you look at. Maybe a team loves
00:45:30holiday at that point. Maybe he's still that kind
00:45:32of ceiling raiser.
00:45:34You might have to trade two players
00:45:36off of a potential
00:45:38repeat championship team
00:45:40to start entertaining.
00:45:42That's a terrible predicament to be in.
00:45:44Really, really bad. It's another
00:45:46reason why you would want to sell.
00:45:48It is a terrible predicament to be in, but also
00:45:50it's like
00:45:52you knew that it was a possibility.
00:45:54You sold out.
00:45:56You got it, and you won.
00:45:58It's going to be hard, and people are
00:46:00going to hate the new owners. If you're saying
00:46:02the new ownership is going to be tasked with
00:46:04dismembering
00:46:06this team, basically.
00:46:08People are going to hate them right off the bat,
00:46:10but it's what they were left with.
00:46:14It would have been the gross specs
00:46:16doing it if they still had held on.
00:46:18We still love that they did it because
00:46:20you got that one title, and that's all you
00:46:22were looking for.
00:46:24What's the alternative? They never sign them,
00:46:26and they never have to get rid of them?
00:46:28Like we always said, John, it's not our freaking money.
00:46:30Go ahead, sign all the guys
00:46:32you want, win two championships, and then if you
00:46:34have to get rid of them, you have to get rid of them.
00:46:36The NBA
00:46:38is creating
00:46:40this mess. Somebody
00:46:42explain to me why the NBA is so
00:46:44complicated. It's a baffling
00:46:46system. They just didn't want
00:46:48the Golden States or the Clippers
00:46:50in the world just saying,
00:46:52I don't care. They needed to make it
00:46:54really punitive so
00:46:56it wouldn't be this gross haves
00:46:58and have-nots. Even in a world with caps
00:47:00and penalties, they had to make the penalties
00:47:02so gross that nobody
00:47:04would want to do it. That was why.
00:47:06Above all else. They're going to bring
00:47:08down the salary growth here too, effectively,
00:47:10because as we've said, you're seeing
00:47:12quickly come through, and Bogner
00:47:14come through, and all these deals year after
00:47:16year after year where you're like, whoa, what's going
00:47:18on here? Like Jimmy said, it's become
00:47:20so convoluted with the way teams
00:47:22get hard capped and the way
00:47:24teams can't spend, and some can
00:47:26that everyone just ends up getting confused
00:47:28and everyone ends up getting angry because now
00:47:30guys are leaving great teams
00:47:32to go to Orlando and Philadelphia
00:47:34and these teams that were in the
00:47:36mix. You can't even sign role players at this point.
00:47:38Yeah, you really can't.
00:47:40Hauser's going to get, what did I
00:47:42see from Bernadone that
00:47:44is going to cost
00:47:46Celtics $80 million
00:47:48because they're at this second apron
00:47:50to re-sign Hauser on like
00:47:52a $10 million deal? Did I understand
00:47:54that accurately, or did I just
00:47:56make that up completely?
00:47:58It's almost 2 to 1.
00:48:00It's like 2 to 1.
00:48:02It's bad, but it's bigger than
00:48:04that actually. It's bad.
00:48:06Yeah, that's the tax.
00:48:08It's like 2.5 times
00:48:107 or something.
00:48:12As you know, I'm not as worried about
00:48:14the second apron stuff.
00:48:16Again, it's...
00:48:18No, it's not the second apron. You can live with
00:48:20those penalties right now
00:48:22because you don't need the things that it's
00:48:24stopping you from doing. You can't live with them forever.
00:48:26But you can't live with them forever
00:48:28and nobody wants to be paying $500
00:48:30million in salary.
00:48:32The owner is just going to be like,
00:48:34no, this is insane.
00:48:36That's where the issue comes.
00:48:38It's going to be that. You're right, Bobby. The second apron you can
00:48:40live with. Anyway, it's all
00:48:42interesting and it's fun.
00:48:44Again, it's a problem that's a little
00:48:46further down the road, but it's interesting to see
00:48:48how it plays out. We are going to tell
00:48:50you, and we'll pivot to some Summer
00:48:52League stuff and a couple of other things, but we'll tell you
00:48:54a little bit about what's going
00:48:56on with PrizePicks, America's
00:48:58number one fantasy app.
00:49:00You can still get in on the action here with PrizePicks.
00:49:02All you have to do is pick more or less
00:49:04on two of your
00:49:06favorite players. You don't even have to like the players,
00:49:08but they just have to be players
00:49:10playing in any sport. WNBA,
00:49:12as we said, super hot right now.
00:49:14Angel Reese, double-double, book it every single
00:49:16night. Caitlin Clark,
00:49:18her first triple-double
00:49:20the other day.
00:49:22That was something.
00:49:24A lot of fun, a lot of excitement there. Obviously, baseball
00:49:26in play. It's a super
00:49:28fun, easy-to-use app. Check
00:49:30it out. 100% deposit match
00:49:32up to $100 when you use that
00:49:34promo code CLNS once again. 100%
00:49:36deposit match up to $100
00:49:38when you use the code CLNS. Pick
00:49:40more, pick less. It is that easy,
00:49:42folks. Also, game time, as we said,
00:49:44whether it's getting into Sox
00:49:46games, which is getting harder to do
00:49:48because they're playing well
00:49:50even though I hate them, but they
00:49:52are playing well. Bobby
00:49:54keeps sending us Red Sox
00:49:56texts. I watched last night.
00:49:58Can you believe it? I actually watched last night.
00:50:00That game was baseball.
00:50:02That was maybe the best game in three
00:50:04years.
00:50:06Really? It was a two-nothing game?
00:50:08It's the highest-rated Sunday night baseball
00:50:10in a while. Yeah, in three years or
00:50:12two and a half years or something like that. You know what I like is
00:50:14New York tears. I like reading the back
00:50:16pages after the Red Sox beat them, and they've now
00:50:18taken the last two series against
00:50:20them. Also, I saw an awesome stat
00:50:22today. 1978,
00:50:24which is well before me
00:50:26even, but still, 1978
00:50:28was that classic
00:50:30Red Sox blew a
00:50:3214-game lead, lost in a playoff
00:50:34to the Yankees. One of the great things
00:50:36that kills you if you're
00:50:38a Red Sox fan in the Yankee
00:50:40rivalry and how you'd always lose to those
00:50:42damn Yankees. They blew a 14-
00:50:44game lead over a span
00:50:46of like... It went from
00:50:4814 to 4 in a span of
00:50:50about 50 days. The
00:50:52Yankees had a 14-game lead on the Red Sox
00:50:5421 days ago, and it's down to
00:50:56four now or four and a half. It's been
00:50:58an unreal turnaround. A lot off
00:51:00of that. Anyway, you want to get in and check
00:51:02on the Sox. You want to check in some of your favorite
00:51:04concerts. GameTime is
00:51:06the place for you. Authorized ticket marketplace
00:51:08here. All you have to do is download that app.

00:51:14apply, and again, every little bit helps
00:51:16here. You're trying to get a hot ticket.
00:51:18Some of the shows here in town, as we said,
00:51:20a lot of great stuff that you can check it
00:51:22out. Really great features
00:51:24on the GameTime app. The view
00:51:26from your seat, I think, is the best by
00:51:28far compared to any other place
00:51:30that even attempts to do those types of things.
00:51:32It is awesome. You can see exactly
00:51:34what you're going to be looking at for
00:51:36whatever venue and
00:51:38what type of event,
00:51:40and it's really, really cool. There's flash
00:51:42deals. Prices go down the closer you
00:51:44get down to it. Each of us has used
00:51:46this app at one time or another
00:51:48since we started our partnership with GameTime
00:51:50to get into something, which is
00:51:52really great. So you can, too, once again
00:51:54download that app. Create the account.
00:51:56Use the code CLNS. $20
00:51:58off your first purchase. Terms
00:52:00do apply. Guys, let's jump over
00:52:02to some stuff.
00:52:04Let's
00:52:06jump over to some Summer League.
00:52:08Summer League begins next week. Actually,
00:52:10do you want to do Summer League? Do you want to do Tatum
00:52:12right now?
00:52:14Let's do Tatum first.
00:52:16Let's do Tatum first. We'll finish with Summer
00:52:18League. Jason Tatum
00:52:20playing in the Olympics
00:52:22did his
00:52:24first interview the other day. Says, winning an NBA
00:52:26title ends the elite debate. He didn't
00:52:28quite say that. Looks ginormous
00:52:30by the way. Did you see the picture of him?
00:52:32He looks even bigger.
00:52:34I think that was more
00:52:36a byproduct of him having his hands behind
00:52:38his back, and because the shoulders
00:52:40pop out, you can see that.
00:52:42It was the pose as much as anything. There's no
00:52:44way he added 20 pounds of
00:52:46muscle. People would start freaking out
00:52:48again. It's the haircut
00:52:50which makes his head look smaller and makes his
00:52:52body look bigger, and his arms were behind
00:52:54his back. He didn't get jacked in two weeks.
00:52:56He's been taking it easy for two weeks,
00:52:58guys. He hasn't done a freaking thing. He's been lifting
00:53:00that trophy, man.
00:53:02Trying different victory poses
00:53:04that he saw on YouTube.
00:53:06How did Kobe hold it? Up or
00:53:08down?
00:53:10Again,
00:53:12asked about it, and
00:53:14I feel bad because we've
00:53:16given him grief for talking about this
00:53:18stuff too much, but everyone keeps freaking
00:53:20asking him about it.
00:53:22What can you do? Another question
00:53:24about, hey, does this championship end
00:53:26your elite
00:53:28debate on this and that? He's
00:53:30like, being the topic of the discussion,
00:53:32so many debates, whatever. Can he lead
00:53:34a team? Is he top five? Still
00:53:36a lot of things. I guess they can debate, but now
00:53:38I've done something they can't debate. I've won a championship.
00:53:40Good.
00:53:42That's the right answer. Absolutely.
00:53:44Everybody
00:53:46put it to bed. The
00:53:48problem here is
00:53:50they won't.
00:53:52You already saw Shaq the other day.
00:53:54Celtics had an easy path. I don't think
00:53:56they're going to repeat, and if they don't, we're going to crap
00:53:58all over them, and we're going to say that they were joke
00:54:00champions last year. Look,
00:54:02Jimmy's saying bye haters, hi
00:54:04haters, and he's made it clear, and
00:54:06I will too. Screw you guys. Complain
00:54:08all you want. Celtics ripped
00:54:10through the league this entire year
00:54:12and absolutely ripped through the playoffs in
00:54:14dominant fashion, so go F yourselves
00:54:16if you're going to complain. However,
00:54:18as Kevin Durant has taught us,
00:54:20you can't change narratives
00:54:22here.
00:54:24Kevin Durant wants to tell everybody he's a two-time
00:54:26NBA champion, an NBA Finals MVP,
00:54:28and that his legacy is secured, and he's
00:54:30a winner, and everyone's like, yeah,
00:54:32no, you took the easy way, and he
00:54:34can't change it for the life
00:54:36of him, nor will he ever be able to.
00:54:38Fair or not fair, it's
00:54:40what they think. It's what the world
00:54:42thinks that matters, not what
00:54:44you say. It's not evidence. It's not
00:54:46in court. A judge is not going to
00:54:48bang his gavel and say, Tatum is elite
00:54:50now. He has won the title.
00:54:52People have to feel it.
00:54:54People have to feel it.
00:54:56That's not going away for them,
00:54:58and it's going to chase them this year, and it
00:55:00actually adds a little bit of pressure this year. It's not
00:55:02like the monkey off the back, as
00:55:04we'd all said. They win, and
00:55:06now they can write their
00:55:08legacy forever.
00:55:10People are still coming at these guys a little bit, I think,
00:55:12in terms of the respect card. They're going to
00:55:14have to battle that this year.
00:55:16Yeah, and you know what?
00:55:18If that's what it takes, then that's
00:55:20what it takes. These guys
00:55:22are young enough. Tatum and Brown are young enough where they can't
00:55:24just retire and rest on their laurels.
00:55:26They still have enough years where
00:55:28they can still
00:55:30completely change the narrative on who they
00:55:32are, the types of player they are. They can each
00:55:34go out and win three more titles when it's all
00:55:36said and done, whether it's with the Celtics or somewhere else.
00:55:38Tatum's right. Nobody
00:55:40can say that he couldn't win a title,
00:55:42but we've talked about what the Celtics
00:55:44did in order to put them over the top. It wasn't
00:55:46like Tatum and Brown
00:55:48completely took over the league
00:55:50and carried the Celtics to a championship.
00:55:52They added players. They added Porzingis.
00:55:54They added Holiday.
00:55:56Whatever
00:55:58they got from production from the bench, whether it was
00:56:00Hauser, Orford,
00:56:02Derek White,
00:56:04they had an unbelievable roster. And yes,
00:56:06Tatum and Brown led the way, and they
00:56:08will and deserve to get their flowers,
00:56:10but they're still going to get all the naysayers,
00:56:12all the haters, all the Lakers fans,
00:56:14all the Heat fans, whoever you want
00:56:16to bring on up.
00:56:18There's going to be plenty of
00:56:20hate or negativity
00:56:22that can still get shot the Celtics way.
00:56:24Jalen Brown
00:56:26has always been very good at using
00:56:28negativity to fuel him,
00:56:30and I imagine Tatum's probably good at it too,
00:56:32but there's going to be plenty of that.
00:56:34There's not going to be a situation where
00:56:36the Celtics should feel like they
00:56:38have no reason to get up in the morning and play
00:56:40hard, because there's going to be just as much doubters,
00:56:42if not more,
00:56:44than there were before they won a title,
00:56:46because if you look at the way they won it,
00:56:48it wasn't necessarily
00:56:50an unbelievable Tatum
00:56:52series.
00:56:54Brown showed up at certain points.
00:56:56Tatum showed up at certain points. Nobody put the team on their
00:56:58back. Those players, though, still
00:57:00have the ability to change the narrative
00:57:02on them and say, oh, I did carry the team,
00:57:04or whatever. Not saying that they have
00:57:06to, but they're still young enough where they can,
00:57:08and we're talking about the Celtics
00:57:10roster, how it's going to have some turnover over
00:57:12the next few years. We'll see which players
00:57:14remain, but they're going to have the ability to
00:57:16continue to prove people wrong, and
00:57:18if that's what it is, then that's what it is, but
00:57:20as far as it goes this summer,
00:57:22Tatum's going to hold that trophy, and he's
00:57:24going to talk about winning a title and brag
00:57:26about being a champ, and he deserves that.
00:57:28He has every right to, and then when
00:57:30the
00:57:32preseason starts back up and the new season
00:57:34begins, that's going to go behind
00:57:36you. You can't just still be talking about that.
00:57:38You have to be talking about the next season
00:57:40or the current season, because that's
00:57:42all that matters. People are going to forget
00:57:44very quickly that you are
00:57:46an NBA champ. They're not going to care anymore, and
00:57:48that goes for the Celtics fans, too.
00:57:50It's fine for a while, but it's all
00:57:52about what have you done for me lately, and let's
00:57:54win the next one. What did Tom Brady always say?
00:57:56The best one is the next one, so that's
00:57:58really the mindset. Now, I'm not saying don't enjoy
00:58:00the offseason. Do all those things,
00:58:02but when this
00:58:04upcoming season starts,
00:58:06that's it.
00:58:08Put it behind you and get out there and
00:58:10prove everybody wrong, because if you
00:58:12go out and do it again, it's going to be
00:58:14hard to doubt these guys,
00:58:16regardless of how they go and do it.
00:58:18Yeah, absolutely. That brings you to a higher
00:58:20echelon, and it's important that they got
00:58:22the first one. I think
00:58:24that gives you a lot of power and confidence
00:58:26and comfort in yourself
00:58:28and who you are, and I think that's a lot of what he's
00:58:30displaying here, and I even like some
00:58:32of the commentary he's making about this USA
00:58:34team, where he's like, I don't care if I start.
00:58:36We're all comfortable with ourselves. We're
00:58:38going to do what it takes to win this thing, and that's
00:58:40the Olympics.
00:58:42It's one thing to do that with the Celtics
00:58:44and your regular job here,
00:58:46but you might want to go out with
00:58:48Team USA and show your stuff and
00:58:50market yourself, and he's
00:58:52not even interested in that, and so I think that's the one
00:58:54thing we've always talked about here. We have our
00:58:56nitpicks with him, and there's stuff I want to see
00:58:58from him going into next year and going
00:59:00forward because it wasn't a perfect run for Tatum.
00:59:02They won in spite
00:59:04of his offensive performance sometimes
00:59:06during this run, but I think he came to
00:59:08appreciate his willingness to pass
00:59:10the defensive versatility
00:59:12here, the lack of baggage.
00:59:14I mean, he's out here saying he wants to play
00:59:16the rest of his career with this team
00:59:18this week here, too, and you love
00:59:20all that stuff. There's so many
00:59:22worse drawbacks
00:59:24you could have in your star than the
00:59:26ones you have with Tatum here where maybe you don't
00:59:28like how he sounds in front of the mic or he's a little
00:59:30boring or he's not the best shooter
00:59:32that we've seen from him and
00:59:34his other points in his career, and I want
00:59:36to see all that stuff turn around a little
00:59:38bit here, but it's not going to be perfect,
00:59:40and that's where I really struggle with
00:59:42here, John, is
00:59:44that championship's a big deal.
00:59:46They've been chasing this thing for
00:59:48a while. I think Celtics fans
00:59:50did a pretty good job enjoying it, and
00:59:52I'm actually with Jimmy here where I don't really care
00:59:54about all the naysayer stuff here.
00:59:56Well, that's why I left this comment
00:59:58up here. This one's my favorite
01:00:00because everyone
01:00:02was looking for a reason to
01:00:04knock him out because I think
01:00:06they were bored.
01:00:08I said it from the beginning. They were
01:00:10so good all year. Was their success a little boring
01:00:12in a Spurs kind of fashion?
01:00:14Yes. They legitimately
01:00:16just dominated
01:00:18the entire year.
01:00:20The amount of all of the stats
01:00:22you throw out there, the amount of 20-point
01:00:24leads they had, the
01:00:26differential in the Eastern Conference,
01:00:28their point differential, historically how
01:00:30it stacked up, offensive rating
01:00:32being the best of all, all of these things
01:00:34were ridiculously historically
01:00:36good, and now you're going to be like,
01:00:38well, you know, this guy
01:00:40was... Whatever. Like, fine.
01:00:42People were hurt. The path was
01:00:44easy. They win those games anyway.
01:00:46If everyone was healthy, they would have stomped them.
01:00:48And this is what bugs
01:00:50me, is everyone built up
01:00:52Dallas to be a super team,
01:00:54but then the Celtics beat the
01:00:56tar out of them because obviously
01:00:58they were going to, and they
01:01:00did it without Porzingis for the most
01:01:02part. They beat the crap
01:01:04out of Dallas.
01:01:06It wasn't even competitive. It wasn't.
01:01:08Sorry. It wasn't.
01:01:10Where was this
01:01:12Dallas is a great team and the Celtics are chumps?
01:01:14The injury luck
01:01:16was against the Celtics in these finals,
01:01:18so you can't say Dallas is
01:01:20this great team and they're going to
01:01:22beat them in the best guard duo of all time
01:01:24and watch the Celtics just absolutely
01:01:26dominate them and then say, well,
01:01:28the whole path was easy.
01:01:30It doesn't work. You pick a lane.
01:01:32It's the aesthetic of the team.
01:01:34If you pick the lane, of course they'll beat Dallas.
01:01:36Dallas isn't a real contender. Then you can
01:01:38say they had an easy path, but you picked
01:01:40Dallas because
01:01:42you thought they were better
01:01:44and then the Celtics took them behind the
01:01:46You thought that you were better. You thought
01:01:48that your basketball brain was better, but
01:01:50they killed them.
01:01:52They killed them. So that's why I left that one
01:01:54up there and I agree. I don't care about the
01:01:56naysayers. It's not going to remove the pressure for next
01:01:58year. Now, Bobby, you mentioned about things
01:02:00getting better.
01:02:02Like
01:02:04I
01:02:06does Tatum have time to fix his jump
01:02:08shot this summer with this busy schedule?
01:02:10He chilled out because that's what you
01:02:12do like your season goes long like you
01:02:14get eliminated in the second round.
01:02:16You've got May and part
01:02:18of June to chill out. Then you get back and back
01:02:20to work in July.
01:02:22He's been chilling out for a little
01:02:24bit and he's just getting back in the gym now
01:02:26on July 8th or
01:02:287th when he reported. Then
01:02:30they're going to play a bunch of basketball here.
01:02:32You know, that's
01:02:34not like working on your skill set.
01:02:36You're going to practice some. You're going to play in these
01:02:38games. Then it's going to hit August and
01:02:40you're going to not want. You've
01:02:42got to have a real break, you
01:02:44know, from things like there isn't
01:02:46time to put in work per se
01:02:48like what do you think happens here
01:02:50because mechanically I'm not a
01:02:52shot doctor. He definitely did start
01:02:54to look herky jerky and weird. And if
01:02:56you look at his earlier jumper, I think he was
01:02:58more straight up and down and a quicker release
01:03:00and everything. Somebody tweeted
01:03:02one time. It looks like an elephant unfurling
01:03:04its trunk. Now he's got this weird
01:03:06you know, you know,
01:03:08I just I don't know if it
01:03:10is surgery, but is he have
01:03:12time to go like to work on
01:03:14some of this stuff or is it just going to
01:03:16show up next year and just hope that it's better.
01:03:18It was bad
01:03:20in the playoffs 28%.
01:03:22He went
01:03:24that something never really came out of it.
01:03:26So there's obviously something you have to look at here.
01:03:28I do wonder and I'm super curious
01:03:30to see how much of that was a product of
01:03:32him just absorbing the extra pressure
01:03:34out there and maybe
01:03:36losing a few percentage points on his
01:03:38own and other guys benefiting
01:03:40from that because I think on this roster
01:03:42because percentage went up this
01:03:44year. This is fair to point out is he shot
01:03:46better from three this year than he did the year before
01:03:48right? Yeah, during
01:03:50the year and then it just went to hell in the playoffs
01:03:52and was there an injury involved in there or something?
01:03:54I don't know, but it was bad
01:03:56and it didn't look 100% right.
01:03:58So, you know, maybe you go
01:04:00back to the basics a little bit. There won't be an overhaul
01:04:02here certainly, but I want to
01:04:04see first and foremost does having
01:04:06the LeBron on the ball next
01:04:08to him and beat in the post dishing
01:04:10it out of there and getting triple teamed
01:04:12and those translating into
01:04:14easier shots for him catching shoot
01:04:16opportunities. I mean, he's always been a great catch
01:04:18and shoot guy. It's the pull-up stuff that we
01:04:20hate here and I keep going
01:04:22back to it Jimmy.
01:04:24Especially you look at the picture
01:04:26of him here and just how he looks physically
01:04:28and how he performed in the finals when you
01:04:30look back on it. I just want
01:04:32him in the post more than ever this year.
01:04:34I don't want there to be nine threes a game.
01:04:36I don't want there to be a million pull-ups and stepbacks.
01:04:38It's all about the pose. It's all the pose.
01:04:40With the arms going back.
01:04:44It's all the pose.
01:04:48You're going to be taking the picture like that.
01:04:50Look at skinny, wimpy little
01:04:52Halliburton
01:04:54and Booker. Yeah, Halliburton
01:04:56and Booker. Look at Booker. Booker looks
01:04:58like a little pipsqueak
01:05:00next to Tatum.
01:05:02Yeah, so you're going
01:05:04to be looking like that. Did Tatum
01:05:06pick him up and put him in that seat
01:05:08before they took the picture?
01:05:12I want more
01:05:14than ever. I felt like this during the finals
01:05:16John. I think I even said it to you.
01:05:18It's time for him to go to the post
01:05:20and live there. He's so
01:05:22dominant around the basket.
01:05:24I'd rather him pull up from
01:05:26the post. It's not even backing
01:05:28guys down and necessarily
01:05:30getting to the basket even though he can.
01:05:32It's the other stuff.
01:05:34It's like
01:05:36just rise up and shoot from the post.
01:05:38He has this weird propensity
01:05:40of instead of just getting to a spot
01:05:42and rising up, everything is a
01:05:44step back even when he doesn't need it to be.
01:05:46He's got that in his brain where
01:05:48he's got to fall away all the time.
01:05:50Yeah, I'd rather see
01:05:52him
01:05:54working from somewhere else
01:05:56where he can operate a little bit
01:05:58and the post instead of
01:06:00catching the ball 27 feet from the
01:06:02basket. I just don't love that.
01:06:08He needs to make some adjustments here, Jimmy.
01:06:10There's no doubt. It wasn't a perfect run for him.
01:06:12I think you like a lot of
01:06:14the stuff he did outside the scoring, but the
01:06:16scoring and the efficiency and the approach to the game
01:06:18in terms of shot selection
01:06:20has to change slightly here because
01:06:22listen, if we're going to talk about
01:06:24Tatum's level of credit here
01:06:26in that run,
01:06:28criticism for how he looked and how
01:06:30the numbers look and all of that.
01:06:32What you can say tangibly
01:06:34going forward, you don't take anything away from
01:06:36what he did, but they're
01:06:38probably going to need more from him this year, right?
01:06:40Because they're going to play without Porzingis for most of the year.
01:06:42Back to our conversation earlier,
01:06:44as guys go away who perfectly
01:06:46complimented he and Brown,
01:06:48they're going to have to take on much more
01:06:50in terms of the stuff they do
01:06:52night to night to carry the team.
01:06:54I think that's going to require a little bit more
01:06:56a little bit more efficiency,
01:06:58a little bit more of a realization
01:07:00of who he is as an offensive player and a
01:07:02scorer.
01:07:04I just think
01:07:06a shift inside
01:07:08and I know they
01:07:10gamed it perfectly this year, Jimmy, right?
01:07:12Where it's three-point volume
01:07:14and so much of it is a numbers game.
01:07:16But
01:07:18that's the balance, not only that this team's
01:07:20facing and Tatum's facing, but basketball
01:07:22is facing, right?
01:07:24Is that aesthetic versus the analytics?
01:07:26And I'm sure
01:07:28if we look at how the Celtics played and how
01:07:30Tatum played, it was analytically perfect.
01:07:32But it didn't look right, and it didn't
01:07:34play out right all the time for Tatum here.
01:07:36So I think there's something for him, too, to look at.
01:07:38It's 100% right.
01:07:40It's like the pull-ups
01:07:42are necessary
01:07:44because he has to be
01:07:46defended a certain way. If the threat
01:07:48of that isn't there, it changes
01:07:50the dynamic. He has to shoot seven, eight,
01:07:52nine threes a game because, again,
01:07:54analytically, that's the right way
01:07:56to play. I don't think it's the shooting
01:07:58and I don't think it's the shooting woes. I think Tatum
01:08:00could live at 36%, 37%.
01:08:02I think it's just the ball stopping
01:08:04that's the bigger issue
01:08:06with him offensively.
01:08:08It takes him, in order to size
01:08:10up what he's going to do
01:08:12to get there,
01:08:14it can halt the offense at times.
01:08:16And then when it's not going well,
01:08:18it doubles up.
01:08:26I'm wondering if the way the Celtics
01:08:28play and the way Missoula plays
01:08:30is going to prevent Tatum from ever being as
01:08:32effective as we want him to be in the post-Bobby
01:08:34because he's got the green light.
01:08:36He's got the green light to take those threes
01:08:38just like everybody else does.
01:08:40Again, if you're talking about the
01:08:42statistical side of
01:08:44things and
01:08:46all that stuff,
01:08:48it's hard to argue because they just won a title
01:08:50with that approach.
01:08:52I'm with you, Bobby. I would love to see him
01:08:54drive more.
01:08:56To start the year,
01:08:58it looked like he had worked on his
01:09:00drives, his penetration.
01:09:02It looked like he had more moves to the basket.
01:09:04He can get to the basket so easily
01:09:06when that's his focus.
01:09:08I also wonder if winning a title
01:09:10changes
01:09:12his priorities.
01:09:14I think the Mavericks series
01:09:16look great.
01:09:18Is Tatum going to be
01:09:20more or less willing to do
01:09:22what it takes to win
01:09:24having already won one?
01:09:26Does he like how it feels so much that he wants to win another one?
01:09:28Or is he listening to the naysayers and saying,
01:09:30Tatum's not elite.
01:09:32He can't put a team on his back.
01:09:34Is he going to focus more on trying to get his
01:09:36and just ride that title that he has
01:09:38for a couple years,
01:09:40trying to get his stats where he wants them to be?
01:09:42Is he more willing
01:09:44to go that route?
01:09:46Or is he less willing because he'd rather just
01:09:48taste another championship?
01:09:50That's what it comes down to.
01:09:52Sure, the third
01:09:54answer is he fixes his
01:09:56shot and he becomes a top three player in the NBA.
01:09:58He does drive more, but
01:10:00guys have to respect his
01:10:02shot and it opens
01:10:04things up for him. Otherwise, I don't know.
01:10:06The team's also still really, really good.
01:10:08Is he going to have that same mindset
01:10:10where he doesn't have to take over games?
01:10:12Think of how annoying it's going to be,
01:10:14Jimmy. We sat there all playoffs
01:10:16and I'm going back and forth with Joe
01:10:18and it's like, is Tatum struggling?
01:10:20No, he's playing great. Look at this stuff.
01:10:22Are we just going to do that
01:10:24every year? How frustrating
01:10:26is that eventually? Well, no, for
01:10:28Tatum too because
01:10:30everyone's going to sit there, John, even if we
01:10:32know that he's doing all the little things
01:10:34and say, he's shooting
01:10:3643% and he's 28%
01:10:38in three and Brown's kind of carrying
01:10:40things like that's going to happen
01:10:42repeatedly here if he doesn't
01:10:44find a way offensively
01:10:46to be able to beat extra pressure
01:10:48and just counteract
01:10:50some things teams do to try to slow him
01:10:52because let's face
01:10:54it a lot of times
01:10:56and you said it's a speed thing sometimes
01:10:58for him, right? But sometimes it's a settling
01:11:00thing too.
01:11:02And there's a sheer
01:11:04will I think he can play with
01:11:06that would allow him to be more consistent,
01:11:08more effective in the scoring game
01:11:10and I listen, I love all the other stuff.
01:11:12He does. I do and I appreciate and I
01:11:14understand it.
01:11:16But you're not just going to sit there after a postseason
01:11:18where you've really struggled from the field and just
01:11:20be like, yeah, it's fine.
01:11:22Nothing to worry about there. Just
01:11:24doing that. Look,
01:11:26this whole thing. You go back to the lab.
01:11:28Yeah, this whole thing only
01:11:30works with these guys if they continue
01:11:32maintaining like
01:11:34their elite level.
01:11:36If you slip back to the pack and you're
01:11:38like, okay, those guys are pretty
01:11:40good, but they're not
01:11:42great, then you lose your
01:11:44superpower. Tatum being a
01:11:46top five-ish, let's call him
01:11:486, 7, 8 wherever he lands and
01:11:50Brown making another leap forward
01:11:52into kind of cemented
01:11:54right on the
01:11:56cusp of all NBA-ish.
01:11:58That's about where he's at.
01:12:0014, 15,
01:12:0216, 17 overall player sort
01:12:04of thing in terms of their value to
01:12:06a team playing
01:12:08such an important position in the modern NBA.
01:12:10Yeah, you want them
01:12:12to continue improving. We spent
01:12:14all of this time saying they haven't even reached their primes.
01:12:16You would hate to think that Tatum is going
01:12:18backwards in terms of
01:12:20his skill set, that there's still room to improve
01:12:22and refine your game, not
01:12:24just to play in a more cerebral
01:12:26way, which they both have done
01:12:28more so over the past
01:12:30couple of years, but also
01:12:32just your skill set should continue to
01:12:34improve. It's not that they should
01:12:36still have another gear potentially
01:12:38they could reach. I think Tatum has
01:12:40Tatum can still be better.
01:12:42There's a lot of decisions he can make
01:12:44to make him better and not just going to the
01:12:46lab and working on some stuff.
01:12:48Yeah, absolutely.
01:12:50I think
01:12:52it's better and I do think that Tatum
01:12:54evolution
01:12:56doesn't go back towards
01:12:5830 points a game, as Jimmy said.
01:13:00Is he going to go get his stats? I think it
01:13:02goes to nearly triple-double status.
01:13:04If he's going to
01:13:06improve, that's where he's going.
01:13:08It's going to be 25,
01:13:1010, and 8 type of thing.
01:13:12That would be best for the team.
01:13:14That's elite
01:13:16where he should get. He's going
01:13:18to truly play this role of point
01:13:20forward or facilitator of
01:13:22the offense and it runs through him.
01:13:24Look, the passing was good and it was very
01:13:26good in the finals. We had a
01:13:28double-digit assist game in the first half
01:13:30of the last game. That's going to be
01:13:32every game. He has to be, he should be
01:13:34in addition to scoring, he has
01:13:36to shoot more efficiently, but he
01:13:38should be putting up those
01:13:40types of stat lines all the time. That's
01:13:42where he wants to get to in his evolution.
01:13:44Make the quick reads, shoot
01:13:46more efficiently, don't stop the
01:13:48ball, and absolutely
01:13:50I'd see 24, 25,
01:13:5210, and 8 is his peak
01:13:54and I still think he can get there.
01:13:58He can get there.
01:14:00That would be the best version of Tatum
01:14:02for sure. That's where I think
01:14:04it gets to. I don't think he needs to be
01:14:06flat out just more of a scorer. Anyway,
01:14:08I think we're going to skip Summer League. We've gone on long enough
01:14:10and Jimmy, it's a school night and he's
01:14:12got home school first thing in the morning
01:14:14so he's got to get ready.
01:14:16We'll come back. We'll do a Summer
01:14:18League preview later in the week. It might just be
01:14:20me and Bobby. Maybe we bring Noah
01:14:22in as well. Both of them will be going down and
01:14:24covering the Summer League. Bucket hat
01:14:26Bobby returns. Next week
01:14:28bucket hat Bobby with cream
01:14:30cheese. The cream
01:14:32cheese, got to bring that back if he's going
01:14:34outside. Yeah, make sure you get the
01:14:36Philadelphia cream cheese in the cart, dude.
01:14:38Somebody, I saw
01:14:40Vegas hit 118 the
01:14:42other day. The heat's killing
01:14:44me this summer. It's been pretty hot here. I was
01:14:46down in D.C. It was scorching.
01:14:48I can't stand it.
01:14:50I'll be staying inside. I'll be in the arena.
01:14:52Don't worry about me. John's got the bronze.
01:14:54As
01:14:56anybody who knows me, this is my regular
01:14:58summer color just by being human.
01:15:00This is me just stepping
01:15:02outside and just
01:15:04going about my business. This is not
01:15:06tanning. This is just
01:15:08I tan this way through
01:15:10my car and yes, I am going to the Greek Islands
01:15:12later this summer
01:15:14for the first time.
01:15:20Yeah, you know.
01:15:22Potentially.
01:15:24You can't swap Tatum for any top.
01:15:26George, where are you going? I'm going to Naxos
01:15:28and Paros. We got Greek.
01:15:30I'm going in exactly
01:15:32a month. Me and Bobby are going to Europe
01:15:34too. Yeah, are we
01:15:36there at the same time? I think we
01:15:38are. Wait, you're in Paris?
01:15:40Where are you, Jimmy? I'm going to Paris
01:15:42as well. I'm
01:15:44going to London and Paris.
01:15:46Oh, you are?
01:15:48Yeah, I'm going to the Olympics.
01:15:50Are you going to go see stuff? I'm not competing.
01:15:52I just want to make that clear. I'm not actually competing
01:15:54in the Olympics. Can you check in on my dad
01:15:56because he's going to be there?
01:15:58I would love to. I was supposed to go
01:16:00with him, but I couldn't do that long a trip
01:16:02because I'm going to
01:16:04Greece for
01:16:06two and a half weeks, so I couldn't be gone that long.
01:16:08You might get a podcast
01:16:10from Jimmy and I in Paris. We might do a
01:16:12live. We might have to do a stand-up. I'll do one
01:16:14from Greece. When are you guys coming back from Europe?
01:16:16August
01:16:1812th or something like that.
01:16:20I'll be in Athens at that time. We should do
01:16:22a European podcast. Wow.
01:16:24That would be something.
01:16:26We've got some fans out
01:16:28international.
01:16:30I'll do it from the Acropolis
01:16:32remotely on my phone.
01:16:34Love that.
01:16:36Yeah, we'll see.
01:16:38Jimmy and I might be meeting up out there.
01:16:40That's awesome. We're definitely
01:16:42going to try. I've never been to Paris,
01:16:44so I'm sure it'll be a little different
01:16:46during the Olympics.
01:16:48I'm a big city guy,
01:16:50so some people like
01:16:52to hike and stuff
01:16:54on vacations. Laura and I like to just
01:16:56go to cities
01:16:58and pretend we live there
01:17:00and then just bop around and eat our way
01:17:02from one cafe to the next one.
01:17:04I think that's what you...
01:17:06The cool thing is
01:17:08the way that the Olympics are set up
01:17:10in Paris is they take place
01:17:12in a lot of famous spots.
01:17:14For example, I'm going to an event,
01:17:16beach volleyball,
01:17:18but it's on the lawn of the Eiffel Tower.
01:17:20I'm going to see the Eiffel Tower
01:17:22while I'm watching beach volleyball.
01:17:24We're going to another event
01:17:26in the Palace of Versailles.
01:17:28There's an event inside the Palace,
01:17:30so we'll check out the Palace.
01:17:32Speaking of that...
01:17:34Are they really? That's amazing.
01:17:36When I went to the Olympics in Greece,
01:17:38that's not what they did.
01:17:40They built all of this shit all over the place.
01:17:42I'm sure they are building some stuff,
01:17:44but they are utilizing some of what already exists.
01:17:46Beach volleyball was always
01:17:48the wildest ticket.
01:17:50It's a friggin' party.
01:17:52We got a VIP ticket. I don't even know what that means.
01:17:54We're going to be partying.
01:17:56It's an absolute bash. It's so fun.
01:17:58That reminds me.
01:18:00I saw a tweet today.
01:18:02This would have been the Boston Olympics
01:18:04if that came true.
01:18:06I was all on board.
01:18:08I wasn't.
01:18:10Dude!
01:18:12Traffic!
01:18:14There's already enough horrible construction
01:18:16and traffic.
01:18:18Do what everybody else does.
01:18:20Rent your place, go on vacation
01:18:22somewhere else, and avoid it.
01:18:24It's the construction.
01:18:26It's not the two weeks.
01:18:28Do you know how many Greeks were in Athens during the Olympics?
01:18:30Like three. They were gone.
01:18:32I'd be fine with a few weeks
01:18:34to the events.
01:18:36Congrats to Giannis and Greece
01:18:38making it. I love that.
01:18:40I'm hoping they make a run.
01:18:42I love Giannis, as you all know.
01:18:44He was unreal
01:18:46in the qualifiers.
01:18:48Yeah, I'm rooting for USA, Bobby.
01:18:50Sorry, I'm not anti-American over here.
01:18:52You can root for Greece.
01:18:54I'll root for USA.
01:18:56Is Italy in it? Probably not.
01:18:58No.
01:19:00It's such a small field.
01:19:02It's only 12 teams.
01:19:04I think the U.S.'s group
01:19:06is Serbia,
01:19:08which is pretty cool.
01:19:10The first game is against Serbia, so Jokic, Embiid,
01:19:12and then South Sudan.
01:19:14I forget who the other one is.
01:19:16Is Embiid going to duck Jokic
01:19:18in the first game?
01:19:20He didn't sound too thrilled about it.
01:19:24They always kick our ass.
01:19:26Embiid, I was hurt.
01:19:28That's why we lost.
01:19:30Why are you playing in the freaking Olympics, then?
01:19:32Loser.
01:19:34Yeah, seriously.
01:19:36Drew Holiday is up there, too.
01:19:38Shout out to him.
01:19:40Drew Holiday is going to be playing as well.
01:19:42I wish Derek White was on the team,
01:19:44but so be it.
01:19:46I am curious how Tatum is going to be used.
01:19:48The first lineup
01:19:50that they had out there,
01:19:52he was starting ahead of...
01:19:54The unit that they had was LeBron, Tatum,
01:19:56Embiid as the frontcourt,
01:19:58not Duran that Kerr was running.
01:20:00People are thinking that might be
01:20:02who plays against Canada, so we'll see.
01:20:04Well, everyone's a role player
01:20:06to Anthony Edwards, right?
01:20:08Everyone's just going to be a role player,
01:20:10and everything goes through Anthony Edwards now.
01:20:12Edward was the backcourt,
01:20:14so Edwards with that unit, interesting.
01:20:16I know Duran had the calf thing.
01:20:18Yeah, he has the calf thing.
01:20:20That was one reason why.
01:20:22I'm curious if Tatum gets that nod over him.
01:20:24He should.
01:20:26He's probably better than Duran is
01:20:28at this point.
01:20:30Duran's a bucket, though, man.
01:20:32That's true. We'll see.
01:20:34If Duran might still have the fire,
01:20:36one last Olympic bid, get him out there.
01:20:38Just go to work.
01:20:40Yeah. We'll see.
01:20:42A guy like Duran,
01:20:44they seem very open to
01:20:46deferring to these younger guys, too.
01:20:48They're very complimentary of them.
01:20:50They've got a great team this year, too.
01:20:52I could see Duran
01:20:54just passing the torch and just taking on
01:20:56whatever role he's given.
01:20:58It's good. It's a balanced team.
01:21:00You've had
01:21:02past teams where they can't do
01:21:04this. They can do a lot.
01:21:06Defensively, they can...
01:21:08The Embiid thing
01:21:10changed everything. Davis would have been good,
01:21:12but Embiid takes it to another level.
01:21:14You have Embiid, Davis, and
01:21:16Bam in the middle. That's
01:21:18really friggin' three
01:21:20all-defensive-caliber
01:21:22players patrolling the middle
01:21:24field. Tatum, Holiday,
01:21:26other people there.
01:21:28Look out for Theis.
01:21:30They can get after it.
01:21:32Leading the Germans.
01:21:34Theis will
01:21:36never go away in Boston.
01:21:38Theis, Schroeder, Wagner.
01:21:40Insane.
01:21:42It's going to be really hard for other teams
01:21:44to hang with the bigs there.
01:21:46Yeah, definitely.
01:21:48It'll be fun. Anyway, we're going to
01:21:50probably do some stuff in
01:21:52around the Olympics as well. Stay tuned.
01:21:54As we said, we're going to do a couple of these
01:21:56every single week throughout the
01:21:58offseason as best we can. We'll jump back later
01:22:00and we'll do some Summer League stuff. We had a bunch
01:22:02of things we wanted to talk about, but we went on
01:22:04on the owners and Tatum and other stuff.
01:22:06We're just going to wrap it up there.
01:22:08We will be back
01:22:10maybe Thursday. We'll see how it
01:22:12goes and do another show

01:22:58when they're interesting, right?
01:23:00It can be, even
01:23:02for a team that didn't do much. There's
01:23:04some interesting stuff with the sale of the team
01:23:06and then guys playing in the Olympics
01:23:08and lots of different things.
01:23:10By the way, John,
01:23:12did you see the report
01:23:14Cornette wanted to be the first
01:23:16player signed? I saw that.
01:23:18That's why
01:23:20we got our
01:23:226 o'clock report on
01:23:24our special, Jimmy. That was a great moment.
01:23:26I love that Cornette did that.
01:23:28I'm sure. It's so
01:23:30good. I wanted you to break that, Bobby.
01:23:32That should have been you.
01:23:34It was a great way to start
01:23:36that show. Don't forget the merch
01:23:38too, John. Give them a quick merch plug.
01:23:40Jimmy, you do it. Tell them all about it.
01:23:42It's right here. Add to the stage.
01:23:44Here it is, folks.
01:23:46New merch is here. I actually
01:23:48don't even remember seeing this thing.
01:23:50We got the hard hats. We got t-shirts.
01:23:52The name drop tee is still selling.
01:23:54That was a great t-shirt that a lot of people liked.
01:23:56Loved it at the parade.
01:23:58Pretty self-explanatory. You got the Garden Report
01:24:00logo tee. Some good stuff.
01:24:02The limited edition white hard hats are still
01:24:04there are still some available
01:24:06but those are not going to be made
01:24:08any more than what they already have.
01:24:10Those will be gone.
01:24:12They're gone. They're not coming back.
01:24:14You'll never see one like that again.
01:24:16The green ones are going to stick around.
01:24:18Get them now.
01:24:20Get them before the regular season
01:24:22starts so you're ready to go.
01:24:24We've already seen them inside the TD Garden.
01:24:26I'm hoping to see more and more as
01:24:28next season goes along.
01:24:30Some gritty wins. Get some hard nose
01:24:32hard hat wins.
01:24:34I will say
01:24:36we've got some stuff coming down the pipeline.
01:24:38Whether it's Celtics related, whether it's Patriots
01:24:40related, we're going to get some different teams
01:24:42in the mix here. The merch store
01:24:44is going to keep growing.
01:24:46We want it to be a place where people go
01:24:48to see what
01:24:50new items are up
01:24:52and running. We want to be quick with
01:24:54some of these shirts that come out.
01:24:56We want it to be a place where
01:24:58people can check out here
01:25:00and there.
01:25:02We've got some holidays coming up too, folks.
01:25:04I'm not going to jump too far ahead
01:25:06but might be some good gift giving
01:25:08coming out of the merch store sometime soon.
01:25:10Get after it.
01:25:12There's always good gift
01:25:14giving to be gotten from the sales.
01:25:16There's new stuff.
01:25:18We're going back to the lab right now. We've got some
01:25:20high level discussions behind the scenes
01:25:22going on. Jimmy Toscano is
01:25:24the final word on
01:25:26all merch.
01:25:28He's the final word.
01:25:30We're going to
01:25:32start asking you guys in the chat too
01:25:34as well
01:25:36what you want to see.
01:25:38Give us your ideas.
01:25:40We want some commitments as well.
01:25:42If we're going to make this stuff, we want to know you get it.
01:25:44Also, shout out to Max from Providence.
01:25:46Who knows if he's watching now
01:25:48but I said I'd give him a shout out.
01:25:50Stopped me at Market Basket
01:25:52with the whole
01:25:54gaggle.
01:25:56Three of my daughters said hi.
01:25:58Big fan of the show. Loves it.
01:26:00Was up visiting his girlfriend.
01:26:02That's the second person who's ever
01:26:04seen it.
01:26:06Market Basket, no less.
01:26:08I love Market Basket.
01:26:10Great soundtrack
01:26:12too. The music's incredible.
01:26:14It's my zen
01:26:16perusing the aisles and just going around
01:26:18and no one can bother me.
01:26:20Market Basket
01:26:22can be a little hectic though
01:26:24depending on the Market Basket.
01:26:26Costco can be hectic.
01:26:28Plus, if you're a pro, you know when to go.
01:26:30You're going Tuesday
01:26:32off hours.
01:26:34Sunday
01:26:36afternoon, you're dead.
01:26:38Don't go on Sunday.
01:26:40Take a day out of work
01:26:42just to go at a quiet time.
01:26:44I love Market Basket. It's homey.
01:26:46I feel good there.
01:26:48The prices can't be beat.
01:26:50Check out the merch. Lots of good stuff.
01:26:52There's more stuff coming
01:26:54as we get into the season.
01:26:56DM Jimmy directly
01:26:58your ideas and he'll
01:27:00get to work on it.
01:27:02Until later in the week,
01:27:04we'll see you guys later.
01:27:06Look at that code, guys. Use the promo code there.
01:27:08Semmer24 for 20% off.
01:27:10That's pretty good.
01:27:12We're not going back and giving.
01:27:14If you don't put the promo code in,
01:27:16that's it. Don't ask me to reapply
01:27:18it and all this stuff.
01:27:20This is the promo code. Don't forget.
01:27:22We can't.
01:27:24I did it a couple times. I can't do it anymore.
01:27:26People got them.
01:27:28We've seen evidence.
01:27:34There's so many good deals there.
01:27:36It's so good.
01:27:38An entire large cheese pizza
01:27:40is like $8.
01:27:42It's the biggest pizza you've ever seen.
01:27:44I feed my family for three days off of one pizza
01:27:46from Market Basket.
01:27:48Are they good?
01:27:50You can get lunch there.
01:27:52It's at least as good as a regular place.
01:27:54It's not North End pizza.
01:27:56What's the score?
01:27:58The oven's not good enough
01:28:00to get that good crust on it.
01:28:02It's a little bit bready.
01:28:04It'll get the job done.
01:28:06For feeding children?
01:28:08Oh, my God.
01:28:10This is children.
01:28:12It's not my pizza.
01:28:14We'll eat anything.
01:28:16A large steak and cheese sub
01:28:18or whatever, $6.99.
01:28:20You go to an average shitty
01:28:22sub shop right now, you're paying $13
01:28:24for a sandwich.
01:28:26You cannot beat the price.
01:28:28Forget about it.
01:28:30Subscribe to Celtics All Access.
01:28:32Head to Market Basket.
01:28:34If you want to meet me,
01:28:36I'll sign your hard hat.
01:28:38I'm there three times a week.
01:28:40Yeah.
01:28:42I should start signing hard hats on the inside.
01:28:44Let's do it.
01:28:46Peace, all.
01:28:48Wait, Amit's got an outro for us, I think.
01:28:50No, he doesn't.
01:28:52He had a phenomenal game.
01:28:54Phenomenal game.
01:28:56Porfrit's out.
01:28:58I think it's an option.
01:29:02That did not sound like a chair.
01:29:04It was a freaking chair.
01:29:06It does sound like a chair.
