00:00Welcome to the Football Show here on PLZ Soccer's YouTube channel, I'm Kerry Pollock, Tam McManus
00:07and Alan Ruff are here with me on this Friday. What's coming up on today's show? Celtic
00:11take on Aberdeen in the top of the table clash. Biggest game of the season so far, we'll
00:15find out tomorrow. Two new managers have arrived, Neil Critchley will be in the dugout for Hearts,
00:20however Simo Vallecari has to wait until some paperwork has been sorted out before he gets
00:24the green light at St Johnstone. Sean Rooney has been released by St Mirren, Rangers travel
00:28to Kilmarnock for the lunchtime kick-off at Rugby Park. Let's have a look at the fixtures
00:32to see what's coming up. Celtic take on Aberdeen, Dundee United against Hibernian, Hearts will
00:38face St Mirren, Motherwell against Dundee, St Johnstone face Ross County and Kilmarnock
00:42will host Rangers on Sunday. Before we get to the games, Tam, both Celtic and Rangers
00:47have been charged by UEFA fines for their pyro displays in recent weeks. Earlier this
00:51week, Rangers interim chairman John Gilligan says, my message is the use of pyrotechnics
00:55must stop and stop now at all matches at home and away games. It's nice to see from
01:00the viewers, but it's just simply not safe. Yeah, it's costing the club's money as well,
01:05as well as safety. As John said there, I think he mentioned that there's people maybe in
01:11terms of asthma and stuff like that with the smoke, plus you can't see the game. So listen,
01:18as to the atmosphere, I get all that, but if it's costing your club money and it's dangerous
01:21then stop doing it. I don't think that John Gilligan could have been any firmer in terms
01:26of it has to stop, but it's costing the club money and there's people who might get hurt
01:31by it. Brendan Norris also spoke earlier today about it. Here's what the Celtic boss had
01:35to say. He said, I really hope so. We don't need the pyrotechnics to have a great support.
01:41The support we get at home and away is absolutely incredible. The support is incredible and
01:45we are not a club that needs that to ignite our support base. We have to bring a stadium
01:50in colour and noise. It's absolutely amazing, Ruffy. They've been told they've been charged
01:54€20,000 already. Celtic have been warned if anything happens again, then the fans won't
01:59be there at Villa Park in the Champions League. Yeah, you would have to think there'd be common
02:02sense in the supporters, the particular supporters that are spoiling it for everybody else. Common
02:08sense tells you if you keep doing it, you're not going to get to games. You'd think there
02:13would be some sensible people out there who would say, if I continue to do this, I'm going
02:17to miss an away game here, I'm going to miss a home game. It's just so common sense, it's
02:22unreal. And it's the minority that are probably ruining it for the vast majority of fans that
02:26go to these games. It's the majority. If they are banned, they're the ones that are going
02:30to get banned. I wouldn't like to think anybody would be punished that's not in any segment
02:35of that stadium that's causing the problems. So it's the people who are causing the problems
02:40that will be banned and maybe they have to be banned to get them to show that common
02:45sense I'm talking about.
02:46Yeah, well let's get on to the football then. Tam, we spoke about it earlier this week.
02:50Biggest game for Aberdeen ahead to Celtic Park?
02:52Yeah, I think it is. I think that, obviously, Aberdeen have started fantastically well but
02:57this is their biggest test so far. This will be the best team that they've played against.
03:02A lot of people were saying, oh Celtic have got a lot of players away on international
03:05duty, it could be a bonus. But I think Aberdeen had six or seven away as well. So they had
03:09a few players away as well. So I don't think that will be an advantage for Aberdeen. It's
03:14an acid test for Jimmy Tillian. He's won every game so far. It's a perfect record and
03:18if he comes away still having a perfect record from Parkhead then the fans will really start
03:23to believe that this could be their season. But I think they're going to get rid of Wightman.
03:27I fancy Celtic to win this game comfortably. I just think that Aberdeen have been a little
03:33bit fortunate with the fixtures and stuff like that. I think they're a good side. I
03:36think they've got third tied up. I said that a couple of weeks ago. But I think they're
03:40going into the Lions' den tomorrow and I think that Celtic will lift themselves for
03:45the big game that they always do domestically.
03:47Yes, 7-7 Ruffey for both sides. What's impressed you so much about Aberdeen so far?
03:51They're winning games. They're getting a wee break here and there. I think the last
03:54two or three games they have been getting a wee deflection or an own goal or something
03:59like that. But you can't take anything away from them. They're winning games. I'm saying
04:04they've been good. This is where we'll find out how good they are because they're
04:09coming up, at this moment in time, the best team in the league. So they'll be tested
04:13defensively. I don't think they've been tested defensively, seriously defensively
04:19this year. I think Celtic will have a large percentage of possession of the ball. So they'll
04:23have to defend particularly well. It's something that they've possibly not had to do this
04:28year. So it's a massive test for them coming down.
04:30They do have their goal scorers though, Tom. Toby Keskin and Nicky Devlin have a few in
04:34as well. Jamie McGrath. So they do have threats all over the park.
04:37Yeah, they have. They've signed good players. Kevin Nisbet as well. Yeah, Kevin Nisbet.
04:43Keskin have been really impressed by. He's got serious pace and he'll cause Celtic problems
04:47on the counter-attack. The boy Nielsen in the middle of the park has been superb for
04:52them. He just sits and tidies up in front of the back four. They've defended well. They've
04:56looked strong at the back. The goalkeeper has been a great sign as well. Mitov from
04:59St Johnson who had a wonderful season last season. So I think they'll cause Celtic problems
05:05on the counter-attack with the pace and the movement they've got. I just feel as if Celtic
05:09have got strength and depth. They've come into form at the right time. I think it'll
05:14be a long 90 minutes for Aberdeen.
05:16Cameron Carter-Vickers, he was in training this week. He should be available for tomorrow.
05:20It's not that Celtic fans aren't comfortable with Auston Tristan in that position, but
05:23just a wee bit more comfortable with Cameron Carter-Vickers there?
05:26Yeah, I think he's the best centre-back in Scotland. I think when he's fit, he's superb.
05:30He cruises the games domestically usually. I think he would be a big boost, particularly
05:35with the game next midweek against Atalanta coming up. I think he would be a real boost
05:42for Celtic to see him back. Their back-lining would almost be at full strength if he's back in.
05:46Well it took them until the 88th minute against Ross County to get that winner,
05:50Nicholas Koon. How do you restrain Celtic? What's the key for Aberdeen on Saturday?
05:55I think, as I said earlier, if you look at most of Celtic's home games, they have 70%
06:00possession of the ball. I think Aberdeen have got to try and cut that down dramatically.
06:04And when they have got possession of the ball, they've got to use it wisely. They've got to
06:08move up the park. We know they've got strikers up there, but they've got to get up there
06:13and feed quality balls in there. So for me, it's all about possession of the ball,
06:18and Aberdeen have to get a large chunk of what Celtic usually dominate.
06:22We've seen Brendan Norder switch up his striker role, of course. No doubt we will see both
06:26Ademidia and Kyogo. How does this game suit Moore, would you say,
06:29because they're very different in what they can provide?
06:32That's a good question. I think you could play either. I think Kyogo's the number one striker.
06:37I still think he's got the starting jersey. I think Aberdeen will probably sit a wee bit deeper,
06:43which would probably suit an Ida more, if it crosses into the box. But I think when you look
06:47at Kyogo's record in big games, particularly against Rangers, usually in cup finals and big
06:52games, he's the man to go to. So I think that he will start with Kyogo, and if things are not going
06:58well, then he'll bring Ida on. But that just shows you the strength and depth that Celtic have got.
07:03They've got a really, really strong bench, and if things are not going well, you can bring
07:073 or 4 on that are just as good as the guys in the park. Aberdeen also left it for a late
07:11comeback roughly after beating Hearts 3-2 at Butaudrie. Is that a quality that both of
07:14these sides possess, that they keep going until the very end? They need to get that winner?
07:18Yes, but if you're in a team like that and you know that you're getting results like that,
07:24you're getting the late goal, the confidence in the team, then believe that if we keep going at
07:29it, we'll eventually get it. But it's going to be different for them this time. This is a game that
07:38most of the players, even the new players that they've got, are having a face this year. So
07:42it's going to be a big day for them. I think Kobe was out speaking to the
07:46Aberdeen boss Jimmy Tolleen this week to hear his thoughts ahead of the game.
07:50I'm here at Cormark Park as the Aberdeen bus, not quite an open top one, sets off for the top
07:56of the table clash tomorrow against Celtic, a game in which Jimmy Tolleen insists his team won't be
08:01changing the way they play. Hopefully we can some minutes also have this momentum ourselves and try
08:10to be what we are good at. I think that's crucial to get points in these kind of games.
08:17Also the things we believe in, because we train on it every week and try to be better every week.
08:22But as you can see yourself, every game we've played so far, it's a small difference inside
08:26the games. But you can still see it's Aberdeen and hopefully it's the same now on tomorrow.
08:32And if you've watched the show, you will know that October is the month that we'll see if
08:36Aberdeen are the real deal. Well, October's here and Jimmy Tolleen isn't caring what
08:41those have to say about his side's run of games so far.
08:45It's football. Football is not easy. Every team has their strengths and weaknesses and
08:49every game is competitive. We have won some games late, some have been better in the game,
08:59but still find ways to win in games. That's what we're trying to do. We try to grow every week and
09:06then during this journey, try to find ways to win the games. This competition and team spirit,
09:11that's what we try to build the team on. Then other people think, I don't care actually about that.
09:18Aberdeen travel to take on Celtic at Celtic Park on Saturday. Kick-off is at three o'clock.
09:24Well, there you go, Tammy doesn't care. You can only beat what's in front of you, I suppose.
09:28Yeah, and Aberdeen fans will be sick of pundits and people down here talking about
09:33how easy a run they've had and they've not played anybody yet and stuff like that.
09:38All they can do is win games and you've got to give them enormous credit for beating what's in
09:42front of them. We all say October is going to be a big month for them. They've got a big game
09:47against Rangers coming up at home and a semi-final against Celtic, so it will be a big October, but
09:52listen, all they can do is win games of football. I think they've put that much daylight between
09:56likes of Hearts and Hibs already that third place is in the bag. If they can go down to Parkhead
10:01and even get a point, then it's an enormous point for them in terms of maybe trying to split the
10:07Old Firm this year. Are we too early to call anyone a title contender, Ruffey?
10:12No, not yet. I think Celtic will believe they're in the front foot and they're beating everybody
10:22comfortably. I think Aberdeen, as Tam said, if Aberdeen were to come down and
10:28some way get a draw, the supporters will believe they can split the Old Firm.
10:35Because obviously Rangers have got a tough game this weekend as well, but certainly
10:40an Aberdeen side coming down from Aberdeen, getting a draw or whatever,
10:44will give them massive confidence to go back up the road and say this could be the year.
10:48Just before we move on to the next game, Nicky Devlin made his Scotland debut against Portugal
10:52a few days ago. He made a crucial block in the game as well, so he made a good account of himself.
10:57Did you find that when you had a good game for Scotland, when you went back to team football,
11:02you had a spring in your step?
11:03It was always good. I thought it was always good coming back, particularly if you had a good result.
11:08You're coming into the dressing room with all your mates that you're playing with week in, week out.
11:13It does rub off on the other players as well because you always get a bit of banter in the
11:17dressing room about how the game went or whatever. I think it's good for an Aberdeen player going
11:23into the Aberdeen dressing room and making it a very joyous time when he's been back.
11:30He did come on late and he had a good block. He's given a chance and it's his first one.
11:35He'll believe he can get another one.
11:37Okay, what do you think how this one's going to go?
11:39I still think Celtic are too strong. I don't think the two Japanese boys played away in Japan,
11:43so they'll be fresh coming back. I think Celtic are still too good. I think it'll be a tight
11:502-0 to Celtic.
11:52I'm going to go for 3-1 to Celtic.
11:543-1 to Celtic?
11:55I'll go 3-1 to Celtic, yeah.
11:56Okey-dokey. Then Kermarnock will take on Rangers on Sunday at 12 o'clock. Overall,
12:00when these two have met at rugby park time, Rangers seem to have struggled a little bit,
12:04even though they've won more than they've lost, but struggled but got there nonetheless.
12:07Yeah, it's just a tough venue to go to. You've seen at the start of last season where Kermarnock
12:12beat Celtic and Rangers, both at home. I think when you go down there, I don't think that's
12:16so tough. The way Kermarnock play, they put you under pressure. They turn you, they put balls
12:20into your box to defend. If you don't defend strongly down at Kermarnock against a Derek
12:25McInnes team, then you can get bullied physically. So, yeah, I think this is a real tricky game for
12:31Rangers. A Rangers team that's just on the cusp of one more bad defeat. The fans really turned on
12:37the team. They've been getting wins but I don't think they've been convincing. The last game,
12:41I think, against St Johnson, they weren't convincing at all. So, as long as they keep
12:46winning, I think the pressure will remain off the manager. But as soon as they drop points,
12:50I think the fans are ready to turn and this is going to be a really, really tough game for them.
12:54Is this plastic pitch talk, does that come out when the team haven't played so well or
12:58is it an excuse when teams go there and they don't get a result? I think it's a mentality
13:03thing. I think that the Kermarnock players and the Kermarnock manager will be delighted if the
13:08Rangers players are moaning about the AstroTurf. I think it can get in your head. I've been there
13:13before when you go away to teams that play on AstroTurf and you think, this pitch is crap and
13:18straight away there's negative thoughts in your head and that plays right into the hands of the
13:21home team. So, no, I think you go there with positivity. Rangers will be hoping there's a
13:27wee bit of rain. I think it's such a different surface when there's a bit of slickness on it
13:31to move the ball. If it's dry and it's bobbling and bouncing all over the place, then it can be
13:36difficult. So, Rangers will be hoping. I don't think Kermarnock will water it if it's not dry
13:39because it suits them. But, no, I think it's just, this is just a game. You know you're not
13:44going, it's not going to be a great game of football to watch. Just go down, try and get
13:46three points and go up the road. Derek McInnes did say, Raffy, that he feels the team do have
13:50the performance in them to beat Rangers because they do have creative players to cause problems.
13:54Yeah, and they've done it before. They've given Rangers and Celtic a tough game, particularly
13:58down there. You know, they have to do it again. Defensively, they have to be sound. I think
14:03they've got players in the front area who will cause them problems. You know, they like playing
14:09two strikers which, I mean, Rangers won't come up against very often and the two out and out
14:14wingers who give good quality in there. It's defensively that Kermarnock have been losing
14:20not great goals, but goals that they could prevent. So, if they're tight at the back,
14:24I think they will give Rangers quite a tough game. And he's not been shy to admit either,
14:29Derek McInnes, that the European games have had a bit of an effect on them domestically.
14:33Yeah, I think that contributed to a slow start. I think it was the same with St Mirren. I think
14:37it's difficult to play Thursday, Sunday when you're in Europe and they come up against some
14:42decent opposition. Norwegian team and then Copenhagen. So, yeah, I think now that's out
14:46the way. The excuses are gone now in terms of Kermarnock. I think they're on a run now where
14:50they'll be looking to pick up points if they don't get any mid-week games in terms of Europe.
14:54But I do think that that did contribute to a slow start. But, you know, they'll be looking
14:59to try and pick up points on Sunday. Just to go back to your earlier point,
15:02Rangers' performances haven't been so convincing, but five out of six, is it bad? Is the pressure
15:06just always there because of the gap that Rangers fans always just want to bridge that?
15:10Yeah, I just think that you don't expect Celtic to drop points. So, I think if you're a Rangers
15:14fan, you need to win every week. You need to go into that Derby game in the beginning of January
15:19five points behind at home. Then you think to yourself, Celtic were two points behind,
15:23we're right back in it. I don't think you can afford to go into that eight points, ten points
15:27behind. So, yeah, they're on a decent run of actually winning games, but the performances
15:32have not been convincing. And as I said, I just think they're one bad result away if the fans
15:38turn on Clermont again. But I think they'll go down to Kilmarnock and I think they'll nick a win.
15:43I think they've got enough in them. I don't think Kilmarnock are at full capacity yet. So,
15:48I think Rangers are capable of going down there and nicking a 2-1.
15:50Well, we're a year into Philippe Clermont's era at Rangers. Patrick
15:54Mullen was out speaking to the Rangers boss this afternoon.
15:58It's been just over one year since Philippe Clermont was unveiled as Rangers boss and
16:01speaking here today at the training centre ahead of their Premiership tie against Kilmarnock.
16:06Clermont reminisced about his opening 365 days.
16:11I need to be home at six. So, that's a difficult one to discuss all of that,
16:17what happened in one year. That it's good that we won a trophy along the way.
16:26I wanted more. We were close on more, but not good enough. We had to do...
16:33and it's about we. It's never about I. We need to do a big rebuild in the club in every sense,
16:42on the pitch, off the pitch. So many things happened.
16:45So, I'm putting every energy in that, all my energy in that, day and night,
16:52to get this club back where it belongs to be.
16:55And it was revealed during the week that Ryan Kent has left his contract
16:59at Fenerbahce by mutual consent. There has been rumours linking him back here
17:03to the Glasgow club, but Philippe Clermont didn't want to talk about rumours,
17:06but did reveal past admirations for the English midfielder.
17:10Of course, I know the player and I know already a long time because
17:15the moment he went to Rangers, I was in talks with him to get him to Bruges, that moment.
17:22But there was a better deal, I think, in Rangers in that way. So, he chose for that.
17:29So, I know him a long time, but I'm not going into rumours about bringing in players or not.
17:34It's Kilmarnock versus Rangers at Rugby Park. Kick-off is on Sunday at 12pm.
17:39Yeah, Ryan Kent has terminated his contract at Fenerbahce after
17:42just 16 months into his four-year deal. Would he be welcome back at Ibrox, Tam?
17:46Eh, I think there'd be a split. I think that initially he had a fantastic spell at Rangers,
17:53scoring big goals against Celtic and a couple at Parkhead. The last season he was at Rangers,
17:58he was really, really poor. He looked as if his head was elsewhere and I think a lot of fans
18:01turned on him because I don't think he was putting in the performances and the effort
18:05that he was previously. So, I think there'd be a lot of fans thinking he's better than we've got,
18:10which I think is correct. And a lot of fans thinking, nah, don't take him back because
18:15we've seen in the last season his contract. I don't know how it works if he'd have to wait
18:18to January before he comes in because he was released outside the window. So, listen,
18:24there's no harm in maybe asking him to come in and train. If he's more than willing to come in
18:28and train, have a look at him and whatever, to keep his cell ticking over. But do I think he's
18:33better than what they've got? Probably yes, but I don't think the majority of the Rangers fans
18:38would want him back. Philip Clement says he is familiar with him. Ruffey tried to sign him when
18:42he was at Bruges. So, if he was to come in, there is that. He does know what he's like,
18:46how he plays. The good thing for Rangers is it's not costing them anything. Obviously,
18:52they've got to give them a wage, but there's no money getting thrown about. Big money because
18:57every time Clement comes on, he keeps talking about the budget he's got. So, they'll have a
19:01budget for January and he'll be looking at players just now to bring them in and it depends whether
19:05Kent comes into that category of better than the players that he's looking at. And the value
19:11that he would get as well if he got him. Carmarnock did pick up their first win against
19:15Dundee before the break. An awful way for Dundee to lose that game, but that's just football for
19:19you sometimes. It certainly is. Sometimes you get the break, sometimes you don't. There's nothing
19:25worse than being two-nothing up and losing three goals in the last five, ten minutes of the game.
19:31It just shows you that there isn't a very good organisation there at the back to see the game
19:36out, but they'll take the three points and they'll move on. What do you think?
19:43I think Rangers will win it. I think I agree with Tam. I think 2-1 Rangers.
19:47You said 2-1 as well. Right then, Hearts will face St Mirren. It's a new era under Hearts,
19:51under Neil Critchley, sorry. Experience at Blackpool, Liverpool, under-23s,
19:55chosen by the analytics system. We spoke about it on Wednesday, Tam, but he was proposed as the man
19:59for the job. Ruffy, how do you look at this new system and way of recruiting managers?
20:03I'm old school for a start, so I find it very difficult to get my head around that a computer's
20:09picking somebody. I think a lot of the Heart supporters are agreeing with that. The guy's
20:14been sacked at two teams. You wonder what that flags up. Obviously, he must have done some good
20:21somewhere. I know he's got a very good coaching certificate, one of the highest coaching levels
20:26that you can get. It depends what the analytics thing throws up. There'll be good things,
20:32there'll be bad things. I would really like to know how much input the Hearts board had in
20:39picking this guy. Or was it the guy from down south? I was going to say that to you, Tam. Does
20:44it take the job away from these guys in the recruitment parts of the club? Does it take a
20:48bit of pressure off them as well if things don't go right? Yeah, I think it does. I think it takes
20:52the pressure off some of the board members. Ruffy would tell you more than me who would probably
20:58pick four or five. He's on the board and you would have a look and have a conversation about
21:03who the best candidate was and you would come to an agreement. I think this is a Tony Bloom
21:07appointment. I think this is Tony Bloom, Andrew McKinley. I think that they've come together.
21:11Tony Bloom's come up with a couple of names. Obviously, the boy Hoogma has knocked it back
21:16and then the other guy was Critchley. I think it's going to be interesting to see how he gets on.
21:21Nobody really knows his style of play. We'll find out. I think it's early to find out straight away.
21:27He's only been in the door. They've got a tough game against St Mirren at home who are decent.
21:33In Hartsley, they need to start picking up points. It's OK. I've seen them talking yesterday about
21:37getting closer to Celtic Rangers. They need to get closer to St Johnson first and start winning
21:43games. I think they'll draw this game. I don't think they'll get off to a winning start. I just
21:49don't think the confidence is quite there yet but I think they'll get a point. Could this
21:54analytic system be used for picking players in the future, Ruffey? If they're using it for managers?
21:59They are using it now. I think some clubs are. Particularly the other clubs that he's got
22:05dealings with abroad. Obviously here, I was reading that there was another team
22:10who are starting to use it as well. I can see the good things about it but as I say,
22:16I'm old school. I'm not 100% sure that it's going to work every time. It might be working
22:22at this moment in time but there will be a time when there will be players
22:26that it won't work. You just have to deal with that. They're dealing with big money players
22:34and I think that makes it a lot easier if you're dealing with millions rather than
22:39hundreds of thousands. I think it'd be easier to identify a player who has got something to offer.
22:45Neil Critchley knows exactly what he wants to achieve in his time at the club.
22:49My immediate aim is to win games of football. We've not won a game of football so far this season
22:55so we are where we are and my focus is solely on St Mirren on Saturday. The rest will hopefully
23:05take care of itself in the future but like I say, there's plenty of points to play for, plenty of
23:09games and hopefully over the next coming weeks and months, we can gradually climb and let's see
23:18where we can get to. They come up against St Mirren, Tam, who have been up and down this season,
23:23just one win in their last seven league games. What have you made of them? Have you been impressed?
23:28Again, similar to Kemalat, they're in European competition. They obviously get through the
23:34first round against a team from Iceland which was pretty straightforward for them but then
23:38obviously two good big ties against Bran, Bergen and obviously they just fell short but I think
23:45that they are again, no excuses for St Mirren now. They're not in European competition and they
23:52should be looking to start to pick up points now and I think they'll pick one up at Tynecastle. I
23:57think St Mirren are decent away from home. I think they're hard to play against and I think it might
24:01take a little bit of time for Neil Critchley's ideas and system and tactics to kick in and so
24:06I think I'm going to go for a one each draw. I was out hearing the thoughts of Stephen Robinson
24:10earlier this morning. It was announced this morning that St Mirren defender Sean Rooney would leave
24:15the club by mutual consent after an incident that occurred just a couple of weeks ago in Glasgow
24:19City Centre but the buddy's boss Stephen Robinson remains focused on the job at hand and says it's
24:23not an ideal situation for him as he feels he's been left short on the football pitch.
24:28Obviously it's not an ideal situation. I've lost a player that we can't really replace until
24:34January so that's an issue for us with the injuries that we've got with Richard Taylor
24:39having surgery, Charles Tom coming off a couple of weeks ago who's a big doubt again for Saturday
24:46so it leaves us slightly short but we'll be fine. There's other boys doing very well with some
24:51younger players coming through and it's up to boys to step in. I always believe that it gives people
24:56an opportunity when injuries and other situations arise to keep people out of the team so it's up
25:01to people embrace that and take that opportunity. St Mirren captain Mark O'Hara has described
25:04sharing Paisley with some Portuguese superstars as surreal but was left disappointed after he
25:09and his teammates were told they weren't allowed to get too close and personal with a well-known
25:13face or two. Yeah unfortunately we were told that we weren't allowed anywhere near it at this point
25:18I think the boys were hoping that we could get a wee sight of their train but the best we could do
25:23was get on the cameras at the stadium and watch it from our phones so no we didn't get it there.
25:28It was I think it was kind of surreal that our home, the place we were playing every week and
25:32you've got these superstars all there. It's inspiring isn't it and I think they'll carry an
25:37aura and just seeing the photos it was some pleasure I think for the people of Paisley.
25:43The buddies find themselves back in Premiership action this weekend at
25:46Tyne Castle as they take on Neil Critchley's Hartside. Kick-off is at three o'clock.
25:50Yeah it was mentioned there Tam that Sean Rennie will leave the club by mutual consent
25:54whatever the circumstance may be it's had such an effect on his career now.
25:58Yeah it has, I don't know the ins and outs of what's happened but it must be serious if St
26:02Myrne have basically released him so I think that's obviously still under a police investigation
26:08so it's hard to comment on it but yeah I think it will I think something like that
26:12follows you about in your career and Sean's had a really good career up until then up until now
26:17you know a St Johnstone legend winning both cups with them and then getting a decent move down to
26:21Fleetwood and then he was doing quite well at St Myrne but obviously this is a blow not only for
26:25the player but I think for the team as well because he was a big part of their defence.
26:29Absolutely rough as Marco Hara mentioned there the Portuguese players coming into
26:33Paisley and they weren't allowed to get anywhere near them.
26:35Yeah I mean it happened when I was at Partick Thistle most of the countries that came to play
26:40Scotland trained at Fairhill and obviously the players the Thistle players were really keen to
26:45see any big names that were playing so I do get it that now when they go to grounds they just say
26:51nobody's allowed in at all you're not going to because it could be somebody in disguise you know
26:56watching their free kicks watching their corners and that kind of thing so they tend to just say
27:01right nobody at all would love you to come in but but I think they did well I think the Portuguese
27:06side did well they signed autographs for the kids that were outside I think they they went out of
27:10their way to to let the kids see them so I thought that was very very good of them.
27:15Speaking to the guys at the St Myrne training centre Tam and he says he thinks it was the
27:19Portuguese social media team that posted something about being in Paisley and then
27:23before they knew it there were swarms of people outside the doors.
27:26Yeah and it was it was great I mean you see Ronaldo cutting about just outside
27:30Feggie Park in Paisley who would have thought that but no listen it's great for the people
27:35of Paisley to see guys like Cristiano Ronaldo guys a superstar you know and to see him and
27:40the kids as well as Ruffey said so listen it was it was a great wee listen first and foremost it
27:45was great for St Myrne to get the facilities for the sports you got to go and train there
27:49no fantastic for them fantastic for the staff in St Myrne Park getting pictures
27:53taken with all the Portuguese guys and Ruperto Martinez so no I think it was a real positive
27:58thing for the for the people in and about Paisley.
28:00Yeah absolutely well here's Cara Henderson with the news headlines.
28:04Hello and welcome to your daily news headlines on Wednesday 16th of October sponsored by
28:08Arnold Clarke. Heart of Middleton CEO Andrew McKinley says that the club are delighted to
28:13have Neil Critchley as manager and that they are lucky to have him.
28:17He's worked with some really really impressive people I can't imagine these are people that
28:22suffer fools gladly so I I am I think in many ways we are we are lucky that we have Neil here
28:29and I'm genuinely delighted that we have him here. Steve Clarke celebrated Craig Gordon's
28:34save last night to keep the game level which is something that he says he hasn't done in a long
28:39time. When they did create the big big chance Craig made the save which is first time in a
28:44long time I've celebrated a goalkeeper's save it was time to talk to John and actually celebrated
28:48it so it meant a lot to me and it meant a lot to everybody in the stadium because that's what
28:54gets you the point. Midfielder Lewis Morgan said that the Scotland boys were excellent last night
28:58as they fought hard to grab a well-deserved point. Yeah I mean well-earned point obviously
29:04against a top side and the manager reiterated before the game tonight that there's no shortcuts
29:08to beating a top one team or taking points off a top one team and we've done that tonight I think
29:12the boys are excellent. Finally Thomas Tukul has said that he's very proud and honoured to be the
29:16new England manager and could Kieran Tierney be making a return to Celtic in the new year as the
29:21club are reportedly monitoring the left-backs situation with Arsenal. Those were your daily
29:26news headlines on Wednesday 16th of October sponsored by Arnold Clarke. If you want more
29:31exclusive news and content please be sure to follow PLZ Soccer Channels. So a couple of days
29:37behind on the news there Tam but nonetheless the Johnson take on Ross County this weekend.
29:41Simo Vallecari will not be in the dugout due to some paperwork getting sorted out but is he the
29:45kind of guy that the Saints need one less than seven games? Yeah I think they need something. I
29:50think I wasn't surprised they didn't really take over for that Rangers game away. I think you want
29:55to wait for Ross County at home. Unfortunately for him obviously there's some work permit or
29:59paperwork issues for him to come in but Andy Kirk's in there and Alec Cleland they took the team at
30:04Ibrox and I'm sure they'll come in and do a good job but this is a huge game for St Johnson.
30:09Ross County have really picked up in recent weeks. They played really well against Celtic. I'm lucky
30:13not to pick a point up but St Johnson need to start winning and they need Simo Vallecari to
30:18bring something fresh and something new and get the fans behind them again because they were
30:24fortunate in my opinion to finish second bottom last season. I think they got lucky in the last
30:28game of the season against Motherwell and Ross County not managing to beat Aberdeen and they
30:34might not get as lucky this year. Ross County as Tam said there Ruffey, they ran Celtic very close.
30:39Is that a cliche term to say that not all games are easy, no game is an easy three points to
30:45gain? Some are harder than others you need to be at the very top level all times? Yeah but as far
30:48as this game's concerned this is a game that both teams will be looking at the fixture list saying
30:52look if we're going to pick up points either these are the teams we've got to pick the points up off
30:58and that'll be both sides Ross County and St Johnson so I think it'll be quite a tight game
31:03Ross County are getting the wee result here and there but St Johnson always look as if they're
31:09going to get something and then obviously something stupid happens you know but I think
31:13Ross County have got maybe the better forward line players you know that could cause more damage than
31:19St Johnson forward players. What did Ross County do that day against Celtic, Tam that frustrated
31:24them right up until the last moment that worked for them in your eyes? I just think that they
31:29stayed in the game they defended solidly I think that Celtic were particularly first half I thought
31:33they were miles off it but Ross County just turned them got the ball in behind made them defend and
31:38they were really uncomfortable Celtic in that first half. Ronan Hale was a thorn in their side
31:42you know the whole game scored a good goal and they just they just put Celtic under pressure.
31:48Second half Celtic obviously came back out and won the game narrowly but you know Ross County
31:53are capable of that particularly at home and obviously it's at McDermott Park but
31:58I think Ross County are capable of going and winning I just I'm not I'm just not convinced
32:02about St Johnson regardless of the manager I just think their squad's weak and they're
32:08going to really struggle this year. What do they need what do you think what do they lack in St
32:12Johnson? I think they're lacking a goal scorer and in terms of a striker and I think defensively
32:21they don't look as solid as they've been in recent years and I just think if you're not
32:26scoring goals and you're not St Johnson are always prided on keeping clean sheets and being hard to
32:31beat and being stuffy and they just they're not they don't look like that sort of team this season
32:35so I think they need to find a goal scorer for somewhere and they need to try and tighten up a
32:38bit. It's a long season nothing but will they keep themselves out of that relegation zone either two
32:42of them? I think Ross County at this moment in time are showing more promise than St Johnson
32:48it's a horrible feeling being down there bottom three for the whole season you know
32:52eventually begins to take its toll you know and confidence in some players so the only way to get
32:59out of it is to win games and that's why I'm saying that's so why it's so important for both of the
33:03teams to win this game tomorrow. Yeah well the home advantage for St Johnson do you think that
33:08plays a big part Tam for teams? Not particularly St Johnson it's not as if it's an intimidating
33:14you know place to go or a little tight pitch it's quite a big it's quite a big nice pitch
33:18McDermott Park so I don't I don't think that the home advantage is is really that big a thing for
33:24St Johnson and I just think that Ross County the wee boy Hale and Jordan White I just I just
33:29don't think they've got they've probably got more goals in them so I think they'll nick it 1-0.
33:34Murphy? No I'm going to sit on the fence on this one and I'm going to go one each. One each all
33:39right Motherwell take on Dundee. Motherwell have been dealt with a bit of injury news as they'll
33:42lose their captain Paul McGinn who sat in the sidelines for a long period of time and threw
33:46a thigh injury Blair Molloy was out hearing the thoughts of Stuart Kettlewell this week.
33:51Motherwell have been dealt another injury blow with captain Paul McGinn set to be out for a
33:56significant period of time with what manager Stuart Kettlewell has called an innocuous muscle tear.
34:01We've lost Paul McGinn we've lost Paul McGinn for a significant period of time a muscle injury
34:07completely innocuous and very simply he's going to miss he's going to miss a real good chunk we'll
34:13be a wee bit more specific on that but the fact of the matter is that we're going to be without
34:18our captain. The Steelmen have been in good form ahead of this international break winning six
34:22out of their last seven matches and the manager today insisted that they are ready to hit the
34:26ground running when they take on Dundee this Saturday. You've heard me saying a number of
34:30times that by us breaking up and thinking it's holiday time and that we've actually achieved
34:34something is never going to work for us so there was plenty of work last week and there's been
34:40plenty of work done in the build-up obviously a bit of disruption in the sense that we've had a
34:45number of players away in international duty but I never take that as a negative we have to find a
34:50way around that we have to make sure that we're still getting our message across getting our work
34:53in and then ultimately getting everybody back together today and some have played more minutes
34:58than others some have traveled longer than others so you know the big clubs have been doing that for
35:03many a year so we've been very vigilant as a staff to make sure that we're trying to put
35:08everybody in a good place. Although they will be without their captain, can Motherwell keep
35:12this impressive run of form going as they take on Dundee here at Firr Park this Saturday.
35:18Were you impressed with them at Hibs, Tam, just before the break? Motherwell? Yeah I was I watched
35:23the full game and I thought Hibs were marginally better team first half but second half I thought
35:27Motherwell got a grip of the game. Listen I've got a real young superstar on the team, Lenny
35:31Muller I've seen him during the week he's scoring a fantastic goal for Scotland in our 21s you know
35:36he's he's a jewel in the crown for Motherwell he's you know he's he's a best player for me at the
35:41age of I don't know what is he 17, 18 years old 18 he's the best player and I think that when you've
35:47got a player like that in your team you're always capable of winning games. Paul McGuinness will be
35:51a big blow for him you know I know Paul well I've seen him at Hibs over the years and he's a really
35:55solid character and can play anywhere across the back so and he's a leader so they'll miss him
36:00but they're going well Motherwell you know they've you know they don't really hear much
36:05about them they kind of win a couple of games lose one but they're always they're thereabouts
36:09they're sitting fourth at the minute you know so they've had a good season up until now
36:13and I think they're capable of beating a Dundee team that's kind of off the boil at the minute.
36:17Yeah they are they'll be hoping to pick up their first win winless in 15 league games Ruffey it's
36:21not a great start when you look at it like that. No it isn't you know and we were all raving about
36:26them last year you know about how well they were doing and breath of fresh air to the league you
36:31know something new somebody up there in the top six. Sam's right you know Motherwell have again
36:37you know a better better start of the season what they had last year they were struggling for a long
36:42time and particularly keep losing their strikers you know and they keep finding somebody so that
36:49that's a good thing for the coaching staff to identify somebody coming in because they have
36:54lost some really good strikers but they're on a good term just now at home you know I just think
37:01they'll win pretty easily. Is that a real quality that Motherwell have just now they've got the likes
37:05of Lennon, Miller in the midfield they've got the guys who can score the goals as well? Yeah yeah I
37:09think that when you're winning games like that you know you're oozing a confidence you're people in
37:14the dressing room you know are there who could come up with some something special and that's
37:19what's happening just now even when they're no on top of the game you know somebody's coming up
37:23with something special and they're winning the games. How affecting can it be as a player Tam when
37:28you lose your captain? I think it's always a blow you lose your captain's usually one of your best
37:36players and a leader so I think it's it's going to be a blow for them to lose that so I was just
37:43mulling over Dundee I mean Dundee losing Luke McCown I think has been a big blow for them as well
37:48and Joe Shaughnessy previous to that? Joe Shaughnessy I think that they don't look the same team without
37:53Luke McCown I think he was a driving force in the middle of the park and you're right and Shaughnessy
37:56as well so they've kind of lost their top man as well and Motherwell have lost him again so
38:00yeah I just think that's I didn't realise it was it was 15 league games that's I didn't realise it
38:05was that bad a run at Dundee and on and they'll be looking for any sort of win by hook or by
38:10crook maybe the break came a good time for them obviously a real signal just before the break
38:15to you know tune all up and losing 3-2 so yeah I agree with Ruffey I think Motherwell will win
38:22this game I just think they've they've got more match winners in their team. Including the cup
38:25games and league games they started the season very positively nine games unbeaten and they
38:29were on the top goals as well. Yeah and Simon Murray was banging goals in and he's kind of
38:34dried up in recent weeks you know if he doesn't score then you're just looking about to see who's
38:39going to score a goal for Dundee so yeah I think Tony Dalton's got plenty of credit in the bank
38:44I don't think there's any panic at Dundee but they'll be looking to try and end that run quickly.
38:49It'll be a long two weeks though after that result against Kilmarnock.
38:52Oh it'll be as we always say you know that game before the international break
38:57is always key you can get into it high as a kite you can maybe get days off if you're a player
39:00if you can you get a win you know the manager could have you in working in tactics and working
39:06in fitness and trying to you know figure out what's going wrong so I don't know what Dundee
39:11done if they had a few days off or they were in trying to sort it but yeah it is a long couple
39:16of weeks if you if you go into that with losing. Tony Dalton said after that game Ruffey that
39:19they're an honest bunch and they will be honest with themselves and won't make any excuses so
39:23they'll know that that wasn't good enough that day. No as a player you're winning two nothing
39:28you know you're I think it was eight minutes eight or nine minutes away for a win bonus
39:32you know which you're always thinking about financially you know depending where it is you
39:37know you've probably spent it you know already you know but then all of a sudden one goal goes in
39:42you go okay we can see that's it then the other one goes in and then I think it's a wee boy
39:46Lyle Cameron is it? Yeah he didn't clear the ball. The ball bounces out and all he's got to do is
39:52lump it into the stand you know to waste a couple of minutes and he tries to keep it in
39:56loses possession and they get the break and they get the winning goal so no it would hurt
40:02I think not only the manager but the players as well. Is it moments like that time maybe come
40:06on we'll look back and go that's the game that's sprung us ahead in the season? Yeah that could be
40:11the turning point for them yeah and obviously they've got a slow start but you know and they
40:16hadn't won a game either you know they're two nothing down you're thinking come on that was
40:20stone last in the league after having a great season last season so that that comeback you're
40:24right that could really reignite their season and as I said they've got a tough game against
40:30Rangers but that that could that could really ignite them and it could that could be a real
40:34downer for Dundee. What do you think in this one? I'm gonna go Motherwell 2-0. Okay. I'm gonna go
40:40I'm gonna go one each. One each all right then Dundee United will take on Hibs is the pressure
40:44mounting on David Gray? Not for me not for me I'm sure some supporters they will be doubting
40:52them at the minute I think that's only natural when you come in as a new manager and you got
40:57off to a bad start that some fans doubt it especially the ones that didn't want them in
41:01the first place you know and you know what supporters are like they want to be proved right
41:05you know a lot of them will think David Gray's not the man and this will be justifying their
41:09opinion at the minute but I don't think so I think that there's still a long way to go in the season
41:14I think some of the performances have been good but they need to start scoring goals I think they've
41:18only scored six goals or something in seven or eight games it's not enough for Hibs and it puts
41:23real pressure on you to defend well and Hibs have not been doing that either so this is a real big
41:28game with obviously the derby games coming up on the back of this at home you know I think
41:33they're currently two or three points ahead of Hearts at the minute so you want to get into that
41:38game still being above them with a chance to increase the gap. It's just one win in seven league
41:42games Ruffey but as Tam mentioned there Hearts are still lingering a bit is that the most frustrating
41:46part of being a Hibs fan at the moment that they're not firing on all cylinders taking advantage of the
41:50derby not really being there? Yeah I think as far as the supporters are concerned you know beating
41:55Hearts is a be-all and end-all but they've still got to win games I think the Hibs managers
42:02got to win games up until that Hearts game if he was to lose how many games is there before that
42:07game? A couple? No one after this, one after this. I think a heavy defeat to Hearts could make some
42:14people press a button yeah you know obviously it doesn't pick any points up at the weekend
42:19getting into the Hearts game you know it's okay getting a good performance if you're on the back
42:24of two nothing three nothing defeat you know it's just everybody lumps on and gives their
42:28tummies well. If Hearts were winning every week Tam do you think that David Gray's job would be
42:33in the balance? No I just think it's too early Kerry to be talking about people losing their
42:39jobs just seven games into the season I think that Hibs as we know have fired through managers
42:45willy-nilly you know there's been so many ins and outs and I think you've got to stick with somebody
42:48at some point and I think that's going to be David and I don't think the performances have been that
42:53bad I think if you're going out and you're listening I've seen some of the performances
42:57under Lee Johnson and Sean Maloney and you just think it's not going to happen I don't see that
43:01yet at Hibs with David Gray but Ruffey's right you need you need to start winning games and
43:06they've been in positions to win games and they've not won them and this is a game I've had a great
43:11start to the season but Hibs have got a decent record up at Tanadise and against Dundee United
43:16in general so they've got to go up there and they've got to take their opportunities I think
43:19Martin Boyle possibly will be back which is a which is a huge boost for them but they've got
43:24to start scoring goals again Hibs. Is it just that clinical edge you think? Yeah yep I think so I
43:28think you've seen against Rangers you know they created chances missed a penalty as well again
43:33against Motherwell first half they created two or three good chances they don't take them Motherwell
43:37score the first goal so again if Hibs can just get the first goal and get in front then it would give
43:42them confidence but they've got to be more ruthless in front of goal. I think Dundee United will be
43:46looking forward to this one roughly three wins in five Jim Goodwin says over 10,000 tickets have
43:50been bought for the return because they've been away from home for quite a long time so a positive
43:54atmosphere expected? Well I think the supporters are bought into it I think if you look at any
43:58United games the stadiums are pretty full you know they've got right behind them but Jim knows that
44:04you know the supporters can turn very very quickly so he needs to just keep picking up points
44:10keeping away from the bottom of the league and I think they're getting the wee rub of the green
44:15just now I think Hibs are waiting in that wee rub of the green you know at this moment in time
44:20you know I couldn't sit here and say oh I fancy Hibs to go up there and win you know because of
44:26the form that they're on so I'd probably sit on the fence here again and go another one each draw.
44:30All right well I need to change it a bit Jim Goodwin because obviously Ross Graham,
44:33Ryan Strain and Trapanowski won't be available to him as well. Oh you never told me that.
44:39I think they've got a few injuries they've got a couple injuries at the back
44:43Trapanowski's obviously a big one for them he's been good for them but they just seem to be a
44:47good togetherness there's a good team spirit up there at Dundee United you've seen that
44:51down at Kilmarnock 3-1 down game was done and they come back and get a three each draw so
44:56you know they're playing to the final whistle and Hibs will need to defend strongly it's
45:01when Dundee, when Tanadise is full it's a good atmosphere it's an intimidating atmosphere and
45:04it's going to be a lot of Dundee United fans at the game so and a lot of Hibs support so
45:08should be a good atmosphere but I'm going to go for Hibs to get back on track 2-1.
45:12Well before we move on will the thought of the derby be lingering because the performances
45:16and results haven't been there? No I don't think so I think you just take it game by game I think
45:20as soon as the game finishes at the weekend you start focusing on hearts so no I don't think
45:25they'll they'll be thinking too far ahead they'll just be thinking tough game get up get three
45:30points and then you get into that derby game and good fettle. You don't want to be getting into
45:34the derby game on the back of your defeat you know because obviously there's going to be a bit of
45:38unpleasantness thrown out there leading up to the game and when you're leading up to a derby
45:43game you want everybody to be positive you want everybody to be going over playing well but if
45:48that's not the case it just puts that wee added pressure on you to win it. Can it be tough when
45:53you're going into a derby game having lost your previous game trying to switch on mentally and
45:57put it to the back of your brain? It depends what the fallout is you know there's players being
46:01players you know would adapt to it and not linger on it but it's the outside influence you know what
46:06they're throwing into everything you know as Tam's saying there they lose a game do they have
46:10a go at the manager do they have a go at that player that player that player and then so you're
46:14going into a game you know with everybody going oh we are in great great form here so you know
46:20you want to win the game if they would win the game at Dundee United getting into the
46:23the hearts game it gives you just a lot of confidence. Who is it they've got in between
46:27Tam remind me again in between Dundee United? Oh I think that's the next fixture is Hibbs Hearts
46:31that's the next fixture after this. There's this one and then the derby well then we'll have a
46:35quick look at the English English Premier League Liverpool take on Chelsea at Anfield
46:38first versus fourth Tam just four points separating the top five at the minute.
46:42Yes yeah it's tight at the top I think that Liverpool started great under the new manager
46:48this will be a big test for them because Chelsea this season they look really strong and I think
46:53they finished last season under Pochettino really well and they've continued it on under the new
46:58manager so yeah I think that'll be a cracker I think Liverpool at home will maybe just be too
47:03strong for them. What have you made of Ernie Slott and what he's doing at Liverpool just now Ruffey?
47:07Yeah they're winning games Salah scoring goals you know they look comfortable to watch but it's
47:13so interesting that Pochettino when he brought all these young players into Chelsea he said to
47:17everybody like just bear with me for a couple of years and they sacked him and now the next year
47:22they're all they're all playing well it just shows you how it changes. Well here's what both managers
47:27had to say ahead of this one. I think it's especially a game for all the clubs Liverpool is
47:37nice environment fantastic we are excited to play this kind of game but at the same time
47:46I think all the games that we played until now no one of them has been easy all the Premier League
47:51games they are difficult they are not easy and as I said we're going to try to do our best and
47:57prepare the game in the best way we can and try to to get points. I think they are in a good place
48:01at the moment if I look at the quality they have if I look at the way they play so they got a lot
48:07of criticism in recent years but if you look at them where they are now I think they are
48:14they are already a big threat for the top three top four positions and they will be this
48:19in the upcoming years if they can continue bringing good players in and keeping this
48:23squad in place. Enzo Maresca saying there Tam that he can't wait to go to Anfield you enjoyed
48:27Anfield when you were there with Peter to see Rangers Liverpool yeah? I did I enjoyed the
48:32hospitality it was fantastic yeah it's a special stadium and the listen the Kop end you know when
48:38Liverpool are shooting into that end it seems as if even from going back to roughies they can suck
48:43the ball into the net and I just think Liverpool are difficult to beat at home in big games and
48:47that's why I think that they'll win this but I think there'll be goals in it maybe 3-2 or
48:52something like that. Yeah Ruffey? Yeah I think home advantage might just sway this one I'll go 2-1.
