00:09Alison McConnell and Tom Cruise joins us on the show to talk football, although to be

00:14perfectly honest with you the reason you're wearing them is you've had one heck of a session

00:19over the weekend, you took Friday off which is against club rules and then you just went

00:24on the lash.

00:25I did, I was back over to my old football team Derry City, I was invited over by the

00:29manager who's now, my ex-teammate who's now the manager, unfortunately I joined Derry

00:34City in 2009 which was the worst season in the club's history where they went bust with

00:38financial irregularities but it didn't sour my love of the city and the people so I had

00:42a great weekend but I'm toiling the day, I'm dying the day.

00:47Well it's good that you've done that, we can't narrow it down to when you're toiling, what

00:51about the, just before we get on to our first point which is a really good point Tom, did

00:56you get a nice reception when you went on to the park?

00:58I did, it was great, the supporters still remember me, I don't know if it's fondly but

01:03no listen I love it, it's a great city, great people so it was great to be back to 1-2-0

01:08as well so everyone was happy after the game as well but I think it'll be my last trip

01:11for a while.

01:12Yep absolutely, well now.

01:13Ruffey says my wife's not happy.

01:16Yeah exactly, such a good line from you Ruffey, I just wish you'd saved it for the show, anyway

01:24apart from anything else, just before we get into what we're going to be talking about,

01:28we do like to read from time to time some emails and of course messages we get, not

01:34only on the live feed but of course when they're sent in to us and this one is an absolute

01:41belter to be honest with you, it just basically says, afternoon Peter, my gran loves the show

01:47and wants to know if Ruffey remembers the night of the 2-2 draw against Albion Rovers

01:52in the second round of the Scottish Cup, August 29th 1979, apparently she remembers everything

02:00says Jack Fowler.

02:01I'm just happy it's a football story I've got to remember here, 2-2.

02:07Apparently Jack says his granny remembers everything, do you remember everything?

02:12I can't remember that at all.

02:14Well you haven't seen Jack in a long while but just keep the payments going.

02:20Anyway, thanks Jack for that lovely email and Ruffey can't remember last week, never

02:27made a 2-2 draw in 1979.

02:29If he sends a photo in his gran I might remember.

02:32What then or now?

02:33Now there might be some kind of resemblance.

02:43Yes.

02:44Absolutely.

02:45Lots to talk about, King is back in the building as John Bennett steps down at Rangers, we'll

02:50talk about that.

02:51Ten in a row for the Dons, Celtic are in good shape for the Champions League and tributes

02:55flood in for Gary Shaw, the Aston Villa legend who sadly passed away at the young age of

03:02only 63.

03:03We'll talk about Gary a little later on in the programme with Ruffey, maybe a little

03:07bit too early for you two characters.

03:10But nevertheless, from everyone on the football show and I think I speak for everyone on the

03:15football show and everyone connected with football, best wishes for a speedy recovery

03:20to the Rangers chairman John Bennett.

03:22John's decided to step down as chairman for health reasons and we certainly hope he gets

03:28back to full fitness very soon.

03:31And with that in mind, John Gilligan comes in as temporary chairman which opens up a

03:36whole load of gigs for us Ruffey, now that John's back at Rangers, because suddenly we're

03:42back out there with more gigs Ruffey, that's great news.

03:44Yeah, it's brilliant, you now have to devote more of his time obviously to Rangers as it is.

03:51First and foremost, I think a real concern though Ruffey, the one thing about the Rangers

03:57chairman's job, and like any chairman and chief executive, it is all-consuming and especially

04:03if you are in a situation where the expectations, the demands, the pressures are there 24-7.

04:10I mean Douglas Park, he runs a successful business, car showrooms, buses, many other

04:19things that he has in his empire and even he found Rangers all-consuming 24-7.

04:25Yeah, because at the end of the day, you're the one that cops everything bad in the club.

04:30There's not many times when, if the team's doing particularly well, the supporters go,

04:35we've got a great chairman.

04:36You only hear about it when it's not going well, that's when he seems to get it.

04:40So no, you're right, the size of Rangers football club, you're right, it'll be more than a 95

04:47job and obviously unfortunately with some of the things that have been happening with

04:50the Rangers this year, he's been taking quite a lot of personal stuff as well.

04:54I don't know if that had anything to do with his illness, but it is, as you say, all-consuming

04:59and you have to be top, very, very healthy to do that job.

05:04Yeah, and Philippe Clermont, the Rangers manager, after the win over Dundee United, had this

05:08to say on John Bennett stepping down.

05:11I heard John as probably one of the first about that during the week.

05:17He explained me everything.

05:20It's not his decision, it's a doctor's decision, so it's with a lot of pain in the heart that

05:25he had to make the decision and I wish him all the best to recover as fast as possible.

05:33I think until now I've been the only one talking outside, so that doesn't change too much.

05:39Maybe it'll change now next week, we will see.

05:43Obviously, I think with John stepping down, John Gilligan is more than able, he knows

05:48the club inside out, Alisson, but they'll be looking for some kind of quick appointment

05:52on the basis of that.

05:54You're already in a situation where you're looking for a new chief executive as well

05:58here.

05:59A lot of Rangers fans want to see that there is a direct plan from the board to move forward.

06:05Absolutely, and I think it's a very daunting prospect taking the job on a full-time basis

06:11given the magnitude of what needs done and the stability that the club is crying out for.

06:16I don't think it's an easy proposition at all.

06:20Yeah, this is what Dave King had to say of course.

06:22Dave King is still one of the main shareholders.

06:25He says, I don't think John expected to find the extent to which the club had been hollowed out.

06:30I think I might be the best person to take the club for the next two years.

06:34I'll come in, stabilise it, get the right people in place, get the club working properly,

06:39at least give it a direction, give it a plan.

06:42The one thing that I think Rangers don't need is some kind of power struggle going on, Tam,

06:49with this one.

06:50Quickly get somebody as the figurehead, quickly start to get the key people in place to take

06:55them forward and if they can find that investment, all well and good.

06:59Yeah, I think obviously Dave has come in before and put his money in.

07:03I think like a lot of other people that put their money in, they got it back out in terms

07:07of loans and stuff like that.

07:08That had to be paid back when Rangers had that great run in Europe.

07:12They made a lot of money and a lot of the guys took the money back.

07:15I don't think it's really putting money in, I think it's spending it wisely.

07:18I think that Rangers over the last two seasons have spent money.

07:22They've just wasted it, Peter, on substandard signings and half of them are not even at

07:27the club anymore.

07:28So I think it's, yeah, you want Dave back in and you want money in the club, but I think

07:32it's actually getting people in place in terms of recruitment that can go and sign players

07:36that are going to be value for money.

07:38I don't think Rangers have had value for money over the last couple of seasons.

07:41Well, I think it's somewhat different from that from some of the more learned Rangers

07:46fans, Ruffey.

07:47I'm not too sure they want to look back the way with Dave King.

07:51I think what they're looking for is, first of all, off the back of what John Bennett

07:55said prior to the Celtic Rangers game, if he's now stepping down, you want a figurehead

08:01there, a leader to come in and move them forward with a clear plan for the next three

08:06to five years.

08:07Now, if that is a similar strategy to what John Bennett suggested, then all well and

08:12good, but you need a clear plan.

08:14You need a leader in there that's a one voice and you also then need a strategy that says

08:19this is how we're going to go about bringing in that money.

08:23And I think that's what a lot of people will be looking for as well as Chief Executive

08:28announced.

08:29I think Dave King said all the right things.

08:32He knows people out there that will invest.

08:35He knows the way the clubs run and that carry on, but I think there's more arms and legs

08:39going to grow out of this because I don't think, somebody might tell me wrong, I don't

08:44think he left and 100% of people go, no, well I hope you don't go.

08:49There are people in there associated with Rangers, didn't like the way he was operating,

08:54didn't like the way he left.

08:56At the top of my head, I'm thinking I'm trying to sell his shares to some of the Rangers

09:01supporters.

09:02That never went down particularly well.

09:04I know Douglas Park didn't like anything that he was doing.

09:08So I think there's a lot of things behind the scene to make this cut and dried.

09:12I think as the days go on, we'll hear who does want him in and who doesn't want him

09:16in and you don't want somebody coming in to stabilise the ship when all that's going on

09:21behind the scenes.

09:22Yeah, absolutely.

09:23Okay, we'll wait and see how that develops.

09:25We will come back to, excuse me, Rangers a little later on in the programme as well

09:30after their win up at Tanadise and get the thoughts of everyone.

09:34Just before we look at the SPFL results, let's first of all pay tribute to Gary Shaw because

09:39again, from our own point of view, we'll remember the great sides that win major tournaments

09:46and Aston Villa in 1982 were the winners of the European Cup.

09:52They also won the European Super Cup.

09:54They had a fabulous side.

09:56Gary Shaw was at the heart of it along with the likes of Peter Wythe and Tony Morley.

10:01He won the Professional Footballer Young Player of the Year and European Young Player of the

10:06Year in 1982.

10:0879 goals, 213 appearances.

10:11He only got about seven under-21 caps.

10:14I think injury as well blighted his career.

10:18But down Villa way, just absolutely revered, legendary.

10:24Oh, most definitely.

10:26A lot of players go to clubs and disappear for a wee while and you don't know what kind

10:31of reception you're going to get when you come back.

10:33But you're right in what you're saying.

10:35Down in Villa, he was legendary.

10:37He was just a striker who was a mainstay of the team, scored wonderful goals, all with

10:41that blonde hair.

10:43One of my players going about with right blonde hair.

10:46He was very identifiable.

10:48I met him in Mauritius a couple of times.

10:50Nice guy.

10:52Just wanted to talk about football and have a good time with a lot of memories.

10:57Like you said there with Aston Villa.

10:59Similar times to what Sam had in Derry.

11:03Yeah, yeah.

11:04Mauritius, Derry.

11:05Yeah, absolutely.

11:07Bit warmer.

11:08Not really much choice, Ali.

11:09I agree with you.

11:10Brilliant.

11:11Just one little thing that I thought I'd mention which gives you an indication of the changing

11:15times.

11:16Villa, our reporter Patrick and I were having an argument about it, but I was merely pointing

11:23out that Aston Villa used 14 players over the course of their season, not only to win

11:28the league, but the next year to go on and win the league in the European Cup and the

11:33Super Cup.

11:34They only played maybe a couple of games less than Man City, but they only used 14 players.

11:40I think it's extraordinary now when you think on that, 14 players.

11:44I wouldn't even get you started.

11:46I'd be considered not a full squad for a standard league game, never mind through an entirety

11:52of two campaigns.

11:54And not only two campaigns, but two of the most successful campaigns in their history.

11:58It's remarkable, isn't it, Tam?

12:00Yeah, I can't believe it.

12:01I'm just reading it there.

12:021981, 1982.

12:03I mean, they used 14 players, Peter.

12:04Get no injuries.

12:05And you've seen some of the tackles back in the 80s.

12:08The pitches.

12:09The pitches.

12:10It's incredible and it just shows you probably how pampered the current modern players are

12:14when you can't play two games a week and three games a week and moaning about tired.

12:17But back then there were 14 guys who were trusted to play a full season.

12:21Amazing.

12:22It's brilliant, isn't it, Robbie?

12:23You know well about it because you were part of that era.

12:26Yeah, some of the pitches were just ridiculous.

12:29Particularly the goal moose.

12:30The goal moose never had any grass in them by, I would say, November.

12:34They were just sand.

12:35And the rest of the pitch wasn't that much better.

12:38Every time I think about the pitches way back then, I think of Tannadice, which was sand.

12:43It was just sand for half of the season.

12:45And I don't ever hear any player complaining about it.

12:48People just got on with it.

12:50Obviously, it's moved on now.

12:52The pitches are absolutely magnificent to play on.

12:55And you just wonder, the players that played way back then, would they have been that much better now?

13:01With the surface and everything and the way they're looked after.

13:04People just got on with it.

13:06You could go back even further and watch games where teams were just playing in the mud.

13:10Just running about in the mud.

13:12No grass at all.

13:13But well done to them.

13:15Alan Evans was on that team as well, wasn't he?

13:17And a former Hibs player as well.

13:19Des Bremner.

13:20Great shout, Robbie.

13:21Des Bremner was on that side.

13:23Peter Wythe, I always remember, is one of those players.

13:28Remember two strikers, Tam?

13:31Peter Wythe, Gary Shaw.

13:32Off him.

13:33And that's the nature of it, Robbie.

13:36That team, Jimmy Rimmer, Kenny Swain, Ken Macnaught, another Scott.

13:40Alan Evans, Gary Williams, Dennis Mortimer.

13:43Gordon Cowens, who was a wonderful player.

13:45Des Bremner, Peter Wythe, Gary Shaw.

13:47And Tony Morley.

13:49What a team.

13:50Brilliant team.

13:51And they beat Bayern Munich in the final.

13:53Yeah, and there was a couple of them who went on to play for England as well.

13:56Yeah.

13:57Tony Morley had a good fight with them.

13:59He's a really tricky winger.

14:01Really good player.

14:02Anyway, our thoughts and prayers go to all of Gary Shaw's family and friends at this sad time.

14:09The SPFL, the Scottish Premiership, here's the results from the weekend.

14:13And we're out at a few of those games.

14:15Aberdeen 2, Motherwell 1, 10 in a row.

14:18I'll give you my insight into my journey up to the Granite City.

14:21Celtic 2, Hearts 0.

14:22Hibs 2, St Johnstone 0.

14:24Ross County 2, Dundee 0.

14:26Did you see that coming?

14:27St Mirren 2, Kilmarnock 2 and Dundee United 0.

14:30Rangers 1.

14:32So, 2-0 for Celtic against Hearts.

14:35And I love the fact that when Ingles was taking the penalty,

14:39Lauren Shankland's giving him pelters, trying to put him off.

14:42That's what happens, Peter.

14:43It just so happens that the camera caught him doing it.

14:45But that's happened forever, as far as I'm concerned.

14:47I remember Chris Sutton doing it to one of your players at Easter Road.

14:51What did he show?

14:52I think it was Grant Brebner who was taking a penalty.

14:54I can't remember, I can't even repeat it.

14:56He was screaming and shouting at him and he put it in the back of the net.

14:58But that's what happens.

14:59It just so happens it was caught on camera.

15:01But Ingles was so cool.

15:03Rolled it into the corner.

15:04A real crucial goal for Celtic.

15:06They huffed and puffed first half, second half.

15:08I thought they were much better.

15:10I don't think Celtic were brilliant, but 2-0.

15:13I think they're another clean sheet, which is I think 5 or 6.

15:16Which is close to the record, or is it the record?

15:18The minute for Schmeichel.

15:19He called it 90-06, 90-07.

15:21I mean, Celtic are starting the season in period form.

15:23As I said, they're just going from strength to strength.

15:26You've seen the strength of Celtic's bench, bringing players on.

15:28They're going to be incredibly tough to topple this season in the league.

15:31Yeah, the one thing I would say though, Alison,

15:34is if you are going to go to Celtic Park,

15:36hearts know what it's like to actually go there and win.

15:39But there are moments when you have to take your chances

15:41and Moussa Dremy missed a huge opportunity.

15:44He should have burst the net.

15:45Absolutely, and I think that's a real turning point within the game

15:48because you know that, I think there was a feeling that Celtic

15:51could open up a bit, go through the gears,

15:53but I think you bring it back with that moment

15:56and you don't know what happens

15:58and the crowd start to get a bit frustrated.

16:00So yeah, I think if you're going to take anything,

16:03you've got to take your chances.

16:04And if there's a goalkeeper that looks as if he's maybe

16:07should have saved something, Ruffey,

16:09we've always got to get your expertise on it.

16:12Luke McCowan won't be caring.

16:13He just steadied himself, looked for the angle

16:16and found the bottom corner.

16:18But should Craig Gordon have done better?

16:20I don't think you have to ask me that.

16:22You just have to look at Craig Gordon's face

16:24when he went in the back of the net.

16:25I think he tried to do what the Scotland goalkeeper

16:28tried to do a couple of weeks ago,

16:30try to push it around the post

16:31and never get enough of your hand on it.

16:33And unfortunately, it could have hit the post.

16:35It could have come back out,

16:36but unfortunately for him, it hit the side of the post,

16:40went in the back of the net.

16:41But no, I think Craig will know himself

16:43he could have done better there.

16:44You know what I'm like, Ruffey?

16:45And I'm slightly biased

16:46because we've been together for such a long time.

16:49So if we were out in the town

16:52and somebody picked a fight,

16:53I'd jump to your rescue.

16:55I'd be in there, you know,

16:56because you're a long time friend.

17:01Yeah, I think so, yeah.

17:02So Celt88 says,

17:07Never on the level of today's goalkeepers.

17:23Ruffey would have been worth millions

17:25in today's market.

17:27For Ruffey to play for Partick Thistle

17:29at a time when managers strangled you

17:31with their clubs,

17:32not allowing you to move anywhere.

17:34He was absolutely top drawer.

17:36You don't get picked by top managers

17:38to go to World Cups

17:39if you're not a great goalkeeper.

17:41Three World Cups.

17:42I think I'm the only Scottish goalkeeper

17:44that's been to three World Cups.

17:45Yeah, to be fair,

17:46what does Celt88 know about goalkeepers?

17:48He was absolutely top drawer.

18:19He would have been worth millions

18:22Believe me, he was a top drawer.

18:28Okay, how much of a blow,

18:33how much will it play and prey on his mind,

18:36Tam, Lorne Shankland still not scoring?

18:38Yeah, I think it will.

18:47As someone who's went on long droughts himself,

18:51I've said this before,

18:52when you've went four or five,

18:53in my case, months without a goal,

18:55the goal does shrink to the size of a matchbox.

18:59I was still surprised that he took him off at 1-0.

19:02I think you leave Shankland on.

19:04If you're looking for a goal,

19:05we think you leave him on.

19:06But he took him off after 1-0,

19:07which I thought was strange.

19:08But yeah, he started the season poorly.

19:10I think it's all down to the levels he's set.

19:13Peter, the last two seasons,

19:14he's scored 50, 60 goals for Hearts.

19:16He's been their talisman.

19:17He's the guy they look to when they're struggling.

19:19And if he's not scoring at the minute,

19:21nobody's scoring for Hearts.

19:23I don't think it'll affect Stephen Naismith's job

19:25or the pressure he's under.

19:27I actually thought he'd done okay

19:28and losing 2-0 was fine.

19:30But I think the next few games coming up

19:32are going to be crucial for him.

19:33He's now rooted at the bottom of the league.

19:35Hebbs obviously won at the weekend as well.

19:37So, in Aberdeen,

19:38now I think 14 points clear of Hearts.

19:41So, I mean, they need to start winning games and quickly.

19:44Yeah, as far as Luke McCown's concerned,

19:47what a great day for him.

19:49Absolutely, he'll just be delighted.

19:51I think it takes a wee bit of pressure off.

19:53Immediately going in, getting your goal,

19:55a positive start.

19:57He'll be delighted to have made a contribution.

19:59And I think he'll just be keen now to build on it.

20:02The fact is, between now and January,

20:04Celtic's schedule will be hectic

20:06when you factor in the eight Champions League games.

20:09You'll have the League Cup games too.

20:12You'll need to use the squad at certain points

20:14across the domestic campaign.

20:16So, I think for a boy like Luke McCown,

20:18you'll be thinking,

20:19I'll have opportunities to go in and make my mark.

20:21When I get them, I really have to take them.

20:23Yeah, and of course,

20:24with the game against Sloan Bratislava coming up,

20:26Champions League for them,

20:27this is what Brendan Rodgers had to say.

20:29I think we've got a good balance in the squad.

20:32We've got areas, of course,

20:34that I would want to improve later on.

20:36But we've done a hell of a lot of work,

20:38and real, real good work, I believe,

20:40over the course of the summer.

20:41We're ready to attack the competition.

20:43We know the level that we're playing at,

20:45but it's okay.

20:46We will go and we will give it everything.

20:48That's what Brendan Rodgers has mentioned,

20:50because it is a big week for them, Ruffey.

20:52Yeah, it certainly is.

20:53And I think at Hearts at the weekend,

20:55it was the first time, defensively,

20:57that Celtic have maybe tested a wee bit.

20:59I think Hearts had a couple of openings.

21:02They put them under a wee bit of pressure.

21:04So they'll have to defensively tighten up,

21:06yeah, because the opposition will be better.

21:08It's Champions League.

21:09But we're all waiting to see,

21:11and I think the supporters are all waiting to see

21:13if that improvement is there.

21:14Okay, we're going to be talking Rangers and Hems in a moment.

21:18But let me firstly address the team

21:22in joint top position with Celtic,

21:24and that is, of course, Aberdeen.

21:262-1 win over Motherwell.

21:28And I have to say, Tam, what a journey.

21:32What a day.

21:33It was incredible.

21:34It was just brilliant being up there.

21:37Full marks to Dave Cormack, the backroom staff,

21:40everybody who organised it.

21:42Motherwell walk out onto the park.

21:44There's flamethrowers going up into the air.

21:47There's, you know, the smoke, the flares.

21:50And then, of course, you know, you've got everybody.

21:54As Ruffey had mentioned, there were some flags.

21:57Everybody had a flag.

21:59I mean, it was absolutely unbelievable.

22:01I thought it was a Champions League game

22:02when they walked out onto the park.

22:04What a show they put on for that.

22:05And then, you know, there's nothing better

22:08than a team who decides to spend an hour

22:10allowing you to come out from the back without any pressure.

22:13Yeah, I've seen the highlights, Peter.

22:15First and foremost, a wonderful start of the season from Aberdeen.

22:18I think Dave Cormack comes from an American background

22:21and having played in America myself and Ruffey,

22:23that is the razzmatazz you get before every sporting event,

22:26whether it's football, whether it's American football,

22:28baseball, anything you want.

22:30It's an entertainment.

22:32You want to go on a day out and people want to enjoy it,

22:35so they put a show on.

22:36But you've got to get results in the back of that.

22:38Aberdeen are getting results.

22:39I thought Papaguay, I thought his two goals were right.

22:42His first goal, was it his second goal,

22:43the one he ran for the halfway line

22:45and put it past the goalkeeper?

22:46Great goal.

22:47He started to score goals as well.

22:49And they're winning games.

22:51As we've said, they've got harder games coming up.

22:52But all you can do is beat the teams in front of you.

22:54They're doing that at the minute.

22:56As I said, they're well ahead of Hearts,

22:58who are probably the big favourites to finish third again this season.

23:01I think they're 14 points ahead of them,

23:02which at this stage of the season is an enormous gap.

23:04And just everything seems to be positive up there after the game.

23:08They're going and celebrating the fans,

23:10which again I think is maybe a Scandinavian thing,

23:12coming from the manager.

23:13Is that for 10 minutes?

23:14For 10 minutes.

23:16Saying thank you to the supporters.

23:18I was winning them handing over the 10-minute cup

23:21and the 10 wins in a row,

23:22which is no mean feat by them.

23:25As I said, everything's positive up there.

23:29He's a hero at the minute with Aberdeen supporters.

23:31So, as I said, if you're an Aberdeen fan,

23:33it's a wonderful time to be an Aberdeen fan,

23:35considering the last two seasons they have been atrocious.

23:39I think they deserve a wee bit of credit for going a great run.

23:42Yeah, absolutely.

23:4310 wins out of 10 is nothing to be sniffed at.

23:46And I have to say, Ruffey,

23:48the one element of it,

23:49apart from I thought Motherwell stood off them for an hour

23:51and then suddenly made changes

23:53and it became a little bit hear-him-scare-him for them.

23:55They almost snatched a draw, Motherwell.

23:58But the one thing I noticed about them is,

24:01and this is something that,

24:03you know, in October that we've already talked about,

24:06Nielsen, he's the man.

24:09He's at the front of the back four, Ruffey.

24:11He takes it off them at every opportunity.

24:13He then puts it to the midfield.

24:15If he's in the midfield,

24:16he pushes forward to link the attack.

24:18He is the linchpin.

24:20Shinnie was out,

24:21but as Shinnie's in there with Magrath,

24:23they've got Lycee's to roll him a wee bit further forward.

24:25If they're defending,

24:27he's telling everybody what to do.

24:30He's almost like Jimmy Tolleen's leader on the pitch.

24:34He just absolutely directs everything.

24:36So the only time it became a different game

24:40is Aberdeen were able to get out

24:42and Papa Gay looks a different player.

24:45But the only time it changed

24:47is when they were pressed.

24:48And then they didn't look as comfortable

24:51as you would have thought.

24:52Yeah, well, the player you're talking about,

24:54that's the reason he was being brought in.

24:56You know, the manager's obviously seen what he did

24:58with his club before, you know,

25:01and I think he's taking a wee bit of the pressure off Shinnie.

25:03We were all looking for Shinnie to do everything

25:05in that midfield,

25:07but he's now demanding, you know,

25:09and he looks like, as you said,

25:11the leader on the park,

25:12and every club needs that kind of guy

25:14because there's a lot of inexperienced players

25:16on the team,

25:17so he seems to be holding it together.

25:19And it was only the last five minutes

25:20when Motherwell threw the kitchen sink at it,

25:23and that's always going to happen

25:25when you know you've got to get something out of the game.

25:27And they might have got something out of the game.

25:29The goalkeeper had a good save,

25:30but no, everything's buzzing up there just now.

25:33Yeah, absolutely.

25:34This is what Papa Gay had to say about the win.

25:37Yeah, so all the time I try to make the fans happy.

26:24If you can keep dancing in the Aberdeen fans,

26:26you'll be an absolute legend.

26:27If he scores goals like that second one,

26:29he will be,

26:30but I think it's just indicative

26:32of the confidence and belief

26:34that's around the club just now,

26:36just on the back of how they've started,

26:38and we can look at it from where we are

26:41and seeing that there are tougher games ahead,

26:44and you might have a better idea

26:45of just how good this Aberdeen team are,

26:47but I don't think you can underestimate

26:48just what it does for a team

26:50to have that confidence immediately,

26:52to have that sense of assurance

26:53going into games,

26:54and also points banked.

26:56It gives you a real safety net.

26:59When you look at the start of the season,

27:01we would all have anticipated

27:02that Hearts and Aberdeen

27:03might have been going neck and neck for third.

27:05When you look at it,

27:06and you look at the gap between the two of them,

27:07it gives Aberdeen

27:08a fantastic starting position

27:10really to lay foundations

27:12for a very positive campaign.

27:14Yeah, I think it's got the makings

27:15of a really good season,

27:17especially at home,

27:18where I think they'll be able

27:19to make it a fortress.

33:40a bit of solidity

33:41and they want to see

33:42a clear identity

33:43about the team

33:44and how they're playing

33:45and then if you get that

33:46you can then go

33:47and ask questions.

33:52to go about

33:53looking for

33:54a permanent chairman,

33:55chief executive

33:56and a strategy

33:57and a long-term plan

37:09experience is

37:10at Easter Road.

37:11They've invested heavily

37:12in the stand

37:13stand, they were just concourses really, they've redone them all, they've now got restaurants

37:18in there Peter. Edinburgh's an affluent area as we know, there's people going in there

37:23and they're spending a lot of money and that's going into the coffers of the club to support

37:28the team so I'm looking forward to seeing the documentary, I've heard a wee bit about

37:32it in there and yeah I think that Hibs deserve great credit for that but it's on the park

37:38that they need to get working as well Peter and a great result with the weekend. A game

37:42that I expected them to win, first half by all accounts they were pretty poor but second

37:47half I thought they deserved to win the game and scored a good goal through Martin Boyle

37:50so no I think that Hibs as I said, they're a work in progress Peter, they've signed a

37:56lot of players, I think they've signed 12 players this season in this window, it's going

37:59to take time for them to gel but once I think they gel I think they've got enough quality

38:02in that squad to at least be in the top six and pushing for fourth. I think Aberdeen are

38:07massive favourites right now for third with the start they've had. Yeah David Gray needed

38:11a win, he got it by two goals to nil and he was one of those managers that has that

38:16relieved look about him. Obviously something that internally I've seen a lot of positives

38:22that we're working on all the time, the progression in the last, especially the last two games

38:27with the point losing the goal late on at Koman I probably felt a bit more of a defeat

38:31straight after it but I think then once the dust settles and you start to see some of

38:35the more positive stuff that's happening in the games and the way we've trained this week

38:39it's great to finally get that three points and more importantly a clean sheet as well.

38:42I think that's something that we take a lot of pride in as well for how hard we've worked at it.

39:01I would have taken him anyway on that point but listen, full march to Hibernian, no surprise

39:08that Martin Boyle wants a wee bit more selfies, his dad told him to and he decided well I'll

39:14go on my own and just nick it over the goalie. Yeah and I think at some points Hibs are really

39:20relied on Martin Boyle, I think they could do with some more goals coming out of him

39:24just now, just at this point in the season. He'll be delighted, I think Hibs just needed

39:29the win, I think we spoke about it on Friday, it's just about getting out the bit, just

39:34getting a wee bit of confidence into the team, loads of changes, a fairly turbulent start

39:39for David Gray, he'll be relieved, just take the three points and it gives you something

39:42to build on. Yeah, any argument with the red card for St Johnston, Ruffey? No, no I don't

39:48think so, I think it was dangerous, it was a lunge, there was a lot of things going on

39:54at the weekend with the games, I think Willie Collins' thing at the end of the month, might

39:58have been weekly, after all the games at the weekend there was some of the stuff that was

40:02going on, so he better have a wee notepad and he's writing down everything because by

40:06the time the end of the month comes he's going to have a list that size, because there was

40:10a lot of things at the weekend I didn't understand. Well we're going to talk about Willie Collins

40:15and how he's obviously offering transparency, communication and discussing things with managers

40:20in just a moment, some people are looking and saying, oh well the referee on Sky Sports

40:26Der McGallagher said it wasn't a red card, well he's not the light of the way in the

40:30truth, I thought it was a red. I thought it was harsh Peter, I'll go against you here,

40:33I'll disagree, I thought it was a harsh red card, maybe a yellow, I think he's dived in,

40:37he's not cotton, I think he's just a striker to try and block the ball up the line. Showing

40:43your studs? I think obviously in the current guidelines and headlines it's probably a red

40:49card, but for me I thought it was harsh. Yeah, absolutely. Somebody sent us an email last

40:55week Tam, just saying that sometimes I offer an opinion and if some people are scared to

41:02disagree with it, you're not, you're one of those mulshy people, you stick by your guns.

41:10I like you, of course, because you're two heavy drinkers, which is why you two disagree with me

42:20of September. Rangers returned to winning ways yesterday with a narrow 1-0 victory

42:25over Dundee United. It was Tom Lawrence who got the only goal of the game and speaking afterwards,

42:30Robin Propper was full of praise for the Englishman. We started really well, we played some

42:34really good football from left to right. We had some chances. I think the goal from Tom

42:40was really good to see his quality in there. And Aberdeen continued their perfect start to

42:46the season with a 2-1 victory over Motherwell. Papa Gay got on the score sheet with a double

42:52and speaking after the game, he believes Aberdeen could have a special season.

42:56I believe myself and then we have a very strong team and then everyone helps each other.

43:02So I believe this year we can have something special. And Hibs also got their first victory

43:09of the season with a 2-0 victory over St Johnson. Martin Boyle got himself on the score sheet.

43:14Speaking after the game, he said he's had a bit of advice from someone special.

43:41Yeah, thank you to Patrick. We know we're on Patrick because you're in it.

43:45But St Mirren 2, Kilmarnock 2. Ali, good game?

43:50Yeah, I thought it was. There was plenty going on. That was for sure.

43:57I thought St Mirren thought they'd nicked it at the death with that goal. It was chopped off

44:01for Marcus Fraser's high boot. I thought it would have been harsh on Kilmarnock. I thought they

44:05were very good. I thought they started the game really well. St Mirren had taken the lead against

44:09the run of play. And then, of course, Kilmarnock went down to 10 men and he anticipated that St

44:14Mirren would take a grip of it in the second period. I thought Kilmarnock were fairly bold

44:18in their approach, even with the numerical disadvantage. And yeah, I thought well worthy

44:22of their point. Yeah, of course, Derek McInnes reckons that they were the better team,

44:29even with that man less. Second half, we come out, 10 men. I've got a decision made. Normally

44:35you get a man sent off, particularly a defender. You play it leg for leg. You get a defender on,

44:38you need to take one of your attacking players off. I think I was rewarded for not doing that.

44:43And I think my team answered that brilliantly. My team were magnificent in the second half. We

44:47controlled that game. Out of possession, we let the routeside centre-backs have the ball. Fine.

44:52We had to defend a couple of crosses. We had to defend a couple of counter-attacks. That happens.

44:56But by and large, I think we'd made it. Yeah, Derek McInnes, I think from his point of view,

45:03well happy, but not happy with Joe Wright. Find him two weeks wages, Ruffey, for violent conduct.

45:08Obviously he's picked up a couple of red cards and he's paid the penalty. Yeah, well, I've had a few

45:14red cards and that'll be the thing that'll be annoying, Derek. You want to keep 11 men on the

45:18park, but that one was just silly. In front of the cameras, you know the cameras are there.

45:24They're going to pick it up and the referee picked it up as well. So you could see the frustration

45:29in Derek's voice after the game and a couple of weeks wages is a hard hit. Yeah, absolutely.

45:34St Mirren, they would have, I think Stephen Robbins, knowing him as I do, he'll have been

45:39absolutely raging that they didn't take the three points. Yeah, I thought he was quite flat after the

45:43game, actually. I think he admitted that he didn't feel as though they'd done enough to win it, didn't

45:47really deserve to win it. I think they've just not quite found their groove yet, following on from

45:53last season, a really successful back-to-back campaigns, getting the two top six finishes.

45:59I think this season, European football obviously had an impact on them. I think they're just not

46:05quite as fluent as what they were towards the end, particularly at points in last season, but towards

46:10the end of last season too. Yeah, okay, and the last game that we're going to talk about is Ross

46:15County 2, Dundee 0. I didn't see that coming, did you? No, I didn't. Dundee have been flying, Peter's

46:19scored a lot of goals. Ross County struggling at the bottom of the league, two heavy defeats

46:24against Rangers and then obviously the last-minute goal against Aberdeen at home. Again, I think that

46:29Ross County and St Johnstone will be the bottom two this season, but Ross County, that's a great

46:33result for them. Dundee, as I said, going well at the time and fair play to them for picking up a

46:38massive three points because I do think they'll be fighting out with St Johnstone at the bottom.

46:41Yeah, Tony Docherty revealed that the SFA head of referees, Willie Colham, contacted him to discuss

46:49an incorrect decision not to award Dundee a penalty in that game. I think the Dundee boss

46:57was quite happy that there is that continued communication. There's a lot of support for what

47:02Willie Colham's doing at the moment. It doesn't make it any better when they lose the game 2-0.

47:06He's going to have some phone bill if he phoned everybody at the weekend after all the results,

47:12the stuff that was going on in all the games. I think the managers will appreciate that.

47:18I think you're talking about the time when the centre-forward got dinged. I thought,

47:22no, I wouldn't be getting a penalty for that. I was good that somebody came out and told us

47:28about why the penalty was given when he pulled him down because the ball was not in play, but

47:34why is he pulling his jersey? For me, that's a penalty.

47:38Yeah, but again, I think we have to compliment Willie Colham because, quite simply, if there are

47:44mistakes, I know John Fleming used to do it as the head of the SFA's disciplinary committee

47:52back in the day in the referees. The head of the referees, I beg your pardon. He would phone and

47:57try and communicate that. I think what was lost over the last five or six years is that ability to

48:05speak to the managers and say, look, what's your feelings? What can we do better? Willie is really,

48:11I think, pushing the boat out here. I think he's made a very strong start

48:15to that role. I think what you're seeing is a desire for some kind of transparency,

48:20communication between teams, between managers, players. I think that's what you want because I

48:26think often what you hear, you hear so many criticisms from players and managers after

48:32games and then the retort from officials sometimes when you speak to them is, you know, we're only

48:37applying the laws of the game. It's not a personal decision, we're applying what we have to apply

48:42and sometimes you have players who might not actually understand the laws of the game. I think

48:47sometimes if you have a communication there, an explanation for why a decision has been given,

48:52you might not always like it, you might not always agree with it, but I think it's a step in the

48:55right direction. Yeah, here's the Scottish Premiership table after that round of fixtures.

49:01Remember, there'll be cup games next week as well. Celtic at the top with Aberdeen, which

49:08makes great viewing for Dons fans. Ravi, when you consider what they were witnessing last season?

49:15Yeah, I think so, but I think we've said this all along, we need somebody to challenge Rangers and

49:20Celtic throughout the season. It's good at this moment that the two of them are split. You would

49:25have thought it would maybe have been Harts or Hibbs, but at this moment in time it's Aberdeen

49:29that's up there and good luck to them. Bottom end, Tam, anything that will be causing a boardroom

49:35major concerns? No, I don't think so. Peter, I think Camarlyn will obviously come out with a

49:39tough spell, playing a lot of games in Europe. I think they'll climb on table, Harts have got too

49:43much quality to be bottom for too long. I think it will be between St Johnstone and Ross County

49:49for that bottom spot in the play-off spot. Hibbs picking up a good result there, I think they're

49:54not too far off the pace now. I think that Aberdeen, Buffy's right, you're looking for

50:00somebody to go and at least put a challenge in. Maybe get to Christmas within touching distance

50:05of the big two here and maybe go and try and push for second place. It would be great to have three

50:11teams at least in that. We're crying out for that, aren't we? Absolutely, I think the more competitive

50:17the league is, the more exciting it is, it's better for everyone, it's more fun to watch,

50:24it's better in terms of what you're trying to sell as a product, in terms of the perception of it.

50:29Kelly had some good supporters there. Kelly took a really good, yeah I thought they took a decent

50:33support, fairly vocal too. I actually like St Mary's Stadium, I like that, it's my stadium.

50:40When it's full, it's got a good atmosphere in it, it's fairly atmospheric and noisy. But yeah,

50:47in terms of a competitive league, I think that's what you're crying out for. I like stadiums,

50:51Robbie, where you know the fans are angry, even if it's a throw-in. Yeah, I think you have to

50:55congratulate the fans of all the teams this year. Anytime I've seen the highlights on the television,

51:01most of the stadiums have been packed. There are only a couple of stadiums that are behind the

51:06goal, if it's two of the smaller teams that aren't. But when all the big ones are playing,

51:11the atmosphere is fantastic and I think Aberdeen are leading everybody in this one.

51:16Yeah, down south, just before we go, we always like to have a wee look at what's happening

51:20in the English Premier League as well. I don't know about you Ali, and I'm only at this point

51:26guessing, but I'd love to go and see the Tottenham Stadium. Everybody talks about it, certainly from

51:32a point of view of a good weekend away. It's a fabulous stadium, a wee bit of hospitality,

51:38could cost us a few quid. But, Robbie, would you be able to get a get-out-of-jail card and head

51:43down there if we wanted to go and see Tottenham? Yeah, I think it's one of those games you need

51:47to go at least two nights before it to catch the atmosphere for the game on the Saturday.

51:51Yeah. So yeah, I'd be up for that. Not this year for me!

51:56I was going to say, as Mickie Flanagan once said Ali, if you're going to think about going away

52:03for the two days and then the game, do you start working on it with Fred the week before

52:08and deliver the line that says, you know, I could go with a wee break here.

52:12Would you be able to get away for two days? I think I've got credit in the bank.

52:15Fantastic, I like that Ali, well done to you. I don't think your kids think you need credit in

52:20the bank. No point in asking you, you'd go to the opening of an envelope.

52:24No for the next six months, if for this weekend. Put me down for next year.

52:29Yeah, okay. Wow, wow, wow. Roughly all things have changed, isn't it?

52:33Look at his contract, I don't think he had it next year.

52:38Just on that, I mentioned the Tottenham stadium. North London derby,

52:42everybody's talking about it thinking, oh it's going to be fantastic. I thought Arsenal always

52:47looked as if they were going to win that when they were too strong. And again, set pieces,

52:51the undoing of Tottenham, this is Ange Postacoglu after some criticism.

52:57Look, I know, I know, I know, look, I know, for some reason people think I don't care about set

53:03pieces and it's a narrative that you can keep going on for ages and ages. I understand that.

53:07Like I said, we work on them all the time, like we do with every other team. You know that they're

53:10a threat. As I said, for the most part, we handled them really well today, but we switched

53:15off for one and we paid a price and you learn from that and you move on. But it is what it is,

53:21mate. You know, it's like, it's my burden to carry, mate, and I'm happy to do that.

53:27There you are. Suddenly, we're in the 21st century,

53:31Roffy, and now he's getting keen because he doesn't have a set piece coordinator.

53:36Yeah, well, it seems to be the way ahead now. I mean, we've got one,

53:40Austin's in Scotland, he's the one who does the corners, free kicks and all that.

53:45Not in my day, we never had anyone like that, but things have moved on.

53:49Yeah, moved on from pick your man up.

53:50Pick your man up, yeah, yeah.

53:52That's the thing though, when you look at it, for all the criticism of not having a set piece

53:56coach and not wanting one, it is a fundamental part of the game that they fell asleep at. You

54:02can't coach that. Surely, you have to understand. It was a free header.

54:10If you're going man for man, Peter, you're a... I mean, you were assigned a player and when you

54:15came off, the player that came on was assigned that player as well. You see them at the side

54:19of the park with the sheets of paper. It's not hard.

54:22If you're a central defender, you have to defend.

54:23Yeah, absolutely. I get where you're coming from, Ali, because everybody,

54:27Austin McPhee does it and he gets great credit when there's a free kick that comes off.

54:30And then obviously, in an attacking sense of something that they've orchestrated and put a

54:35bit of thought into, then all credit to them. But for God's sake, he's got a backroom team there

54:41and they will have worked on it. He is a manager. He manages this team on how to play.

54:47So the buck stops with him, but to suggest that suddenly the defensive coordinator is going to

54:52come in and wave the magic wand. If Ange, surely in midweek, has turned around and said, listen,

54:59we've been making mistakes at set-piece. Pick your bloody man up.

55:02Yep. As I said, they'll be assigned. If they're going zonal, they'll know what zone they've got

55:06to cover. I don't get it, but listen, Tottenham are struggling a wee bit. It's a poor start to

55:12season. Things are starting to get nitpicked in terms of what they're doing wrong. I thought

55:17Tottenham, just again, poor in the final third, Peter. They didn't make the right decisions in

55:22the final third. Arsenal, it was like a Jose Mourinho performance. I thought they defended

55:25for most of the game. Went up the park, scored, then defended the 1-0.

55:28It wasn't good without Odegaard and Rice.

55:30Listen, obviously, two key players, but Arsenal for me this season will be the big challenges to

55:37Man City.
