00:00:00Celtics Beat is brought to you by Price Picks and the Game Time app.
00:00:07What's up everyone? Brand new Celtics Beat to close out the month of October.
00:00:11It is Halloween. Happy Halloween.
00:00:13And for those of you out there that are listening,
00:00:16I guess this doesn't really apply to you as much as those watching on the CLNS YouTube page.
00:00:22But visually, it's a visual suck.
00:00:25None of us came in the spirit of Halloween.
00:00:29None of us are dressed up, unless I guess we're just dressed up as Celtics podcasters or something like that.
00:00:35I didn't put any real forethought into that.
00:00:38Maybe I would have come in the old Batman costume that I've got stashed in the closet.
00:00:43Ev, you're just dressed as a...
00:00:46I'm dressed to kill, per usual.
00:00:48You're dressed to kill. Just your day job.
00:00:50And then Sean Grandy, of course, the voice of the Celtics who we have had on a number of times here.
00:00:58It depends whether we catch you at home or catch you on the road.
00:01:01We catch you at home, we know what backdrop we're expecting.
00:01:04You're on the road. Could be any number of different things.
00:01:07But what? T-shirt? That's pretty much all we're working with here?
00:01:11You get the road. That's the road uniform, essentially.
00:01:14I could angle a thing and show you the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, out the window.
00:01:19But there's lighting issues and whatever.
00:01:21Everyone can just use their imagination.
00:01:23People can make their own backgrounds.
00:01:25I assumed that within this world, is this the equivalent of November sweeps?
00:01:30That you go and get the big star for this?
00:01:32That you were gearing up, building up to this?
00:01:35I don't know how the ratings work.
00:01:37Neither do we.
00:01:38That's a great question.
00:01:39I just want to...
00:01:41You keep talking shit to Grandy when you're wearing a Tune Squad T-shirt.
00:01:44Like, what are we doing here?
00:01:46Just a big, space T-shirt.
00:01:48I married into Michigan, so...
00:01:50Oh, there you go.
00:01:51Yeah.
00:01:52Nice win against Michigan State last time.
00:01:54When your school doesn't play football anymore.
00:01:57This is a true story.
00:01:59Back in my youth, when I was the next big thing, I'd go to ABC.
00:02:03There's Keith Jackson and Brent Musburger.
00:02:05One of the things we had to do on the first day of college football meetings is go and shoot these little things for what now is ESPN+.
00:02:12But back then was ESPN Game Plan, where they would run all these college football games.
00:02:16And you'd have to say, I'm Sean McDonough.
00:02:18Watch my school, Syracuse, on ESPN Game Plan.
00:02:21And they're lining everybody up, and they get to me, and I'm like, I can't do this.
00:02:26And I'm sure they thought I was some...
00:02:28Who the hell is this kid, like, refusing to do this thing?
00:02:31I'm like, yeah, my school just dropped football.
00:02:33It's not that I won't.
00:02:35It's not that I won't.
00:02:36It's that, hey, we were undefeated a few years ago, but now, yeah, we dropped football, and there's Title IX, and the whole thing.
00:02:43So I'm just going to stand over here.
00:02:46I'm just going to lay out.
00:02:47Let McDonough and the rest do their thing.
00:02:50I do want to do a quick shout-out, by the way.
00:02:52This is not an affiliated sponsorship with the show or anything like that, although maybe one day.
00:02:57That would be fun.
00:02:58The 90s department, Geo at the 90s department, for those of you that haven't checked it out, you should go to the website.
00:03:04Some cool stuff.
00:03:05He sent me a hat, this cool Celtics hat, just to show people who are watching.
00:03:09It's a cool look.
00:03:10I just wanted to give him a shout-out, represent this thing a little bit.
00:03:14You want to send me free stuff?
00:03:15You want to send Sean free stuff at the same time?
00:03:17Yeah, well, I'll take free stuff.
00:03:18I don't know how confidence you want to get free stuff here.
00:03:20It's driving me crazy.
00:03:21So not only do you go for the biggest star you can possibly get, now you're trying to throw ads into the thing at the same time.
00:03:28Like you said.
00:03:29We're really embracing it.
00:03:34Look, we've got to get excited about something.
00:03:36It's not like the Celtics are going to go 98-0 or something like that.
00:03:39Undefeated is off the table at this point in time.
00:03:42Only the Cavaliers and the Thunder, expectedly kind of the Thunder, obviously.
00:03:47Only these two teams are sitting at the top of their respective conferences.
00:03:52The Celtics no longer perfect after this overtime loss at Indiana.
00:03:56A game in which, look, I thought they were going to cover.
00:03:58I thought they'd cover the six and a half, seven points, depending on where you like to shop around.
00:04:03Just mix in a little bit of betting talk.
00:04:05But, you know, maybe if they hadn't played with their food at the beginning and fallen down by 20-plus points, it might have happened.
00:04:11It was a nice comeback.
00:04:12They didn't roll over.
00:04:13Obviously respect that.
00:04:15And I'm kidding.
00:04:16Nobody was going to go undefeated.
00:04:18We all know that.
00:04:19The Celtics, they are off to a banner start, you might say.
00:04:23Four and one.
00:04:24Some really impressive wins against the would-be contenders in the Eastern Conference as well.
00:04:31Blew out the Knicks in the opener, as we talked about last week.
00:04:34Most recently took down Dame and Giannis and the Bucs as well.
00:04:39And we expected a competitive game with the Pacers.
00:04:41Certainly a competitive playoff series last year.
00:04:44Even though it only went four games, every game was close.
00:04:46And so that's a team to keep an eye on in the Eastern Conference.
00:04:49But now we've got this five-game sample to start off the year.
00:04:52And where I want to start is, Sean, I was asked going into that game, what are your expectations for tonight?
00:04:58You know, I'm doing this interview, and I boiled it down to this.
00:05:02And in a lot of ways, you could kind of boil every game down to this, I recognize.
00:05:06But I was just specifically talking about this one with the Pacers.
00:05:10I said, you know, Celtics, you know they're going to take their 45-plus threes.
00:05:14Wound up being almost 60.
00:05:15But they're going to take their 45-plus threes, and they hit 40% of them.
00:05:20They're going to win going away.
00:05:21They hit between 30% and 35%.
00:05:23It's going to be a close game, and who knows?
00:05:25Maybe they'll lose.
00:05:26They end up shooting 33%.
00:05:28And, you know, we saw what happened, obviously.
00:05:30Is it that simple with these Celtics, given the volume, obviously, that Missoula ball dictates?
00:05:37That if you reach a certain benchmark, you're the stats guy.
00:05:41Reach a certain benchmark when it comes to these three-pointers,
00:05:44then you can all but guarantee victory, whereas they fall just a little bit below that,
00:05:49and you're in for a dogfight.
00:05:51The stat guy?
00:05:52Yeah, exactly.
00:05:53When they induct me into the Hall of Fame, is that what they're going to say?
00:05:56It's going to be part of the tombstone, yeah.
00:06:00To some degree, it is that simple in this regard.
00:06:04I don't want to go over anybody's head, but here's a literary reference.
00:06:07In a great classic early episode of The Simpsons, when Abu is trying to get his citizenship, right,
00:06:13and Homer is teaching him all this crazy stuff or whatever,
00:06:15and he studies all these studies for the citizenship test, and they ask him what was the test,
00:06:20what was the cause of the Civil War?
00:06:21He said, well, outside the obvious conflict between abolitionists and anti-abolitionists,
00:06:25there were several factors, and the guy's like, just say slavery.
00:06:29Slavery it is, sir.
00:06:31Obviously, it's extremely complicated what causes the Celtics to shoot that,
00:06:35but if you extrapolate the numbers afterwards, when the Celtics don't get past 34%, 35%,
00:06:41that's when they become mortal.
00:06:43The real reason last night was that the Pacers defended the three-point line extremely well early in the game.
00:06:49The reason the Celtics got back in it was because Indiana doesn't know how to play slow.
00:06:53They don't know how to play with a lead, and all of a sudden,
00:06:56they had a lead that should be impossible to surrender.
00:06:59When you're up by 22 at home with 8 1⁄2 to go, you should be able to milk that baby,
00:07:04and they don't know how to do it.
00:07:05They can't run their offense, but defensively, I thought they were really good,
00:07:08and maybe not having Turner ended up helping them a little bit in that they were a little smaller,
00:07:14more athletic, and more mobile defensively.
00:07:16And when you think about the threes, what was so striking, as the Celtics are ruining basketball,
00:07:21as everybody's saying for the first week of the season,
00:07:23what was so striking on opening night and some of these early games is how open the three-point shots have been,
00:07:30that the spacing has been so good that you're watching Derrick White and obviously Al,
00:07:35and even Jason would get a couple, getting open threes.
00:07:38And if you think back to Wednesday night at Indiana, how many of those shots at the beginning were open?
00:07:43The Celtics were an ordinary three-point shooting team
00:07:46because they were really being guarded well at the three-point line.
00:07:50Yeah, sometimes with the lack of Turner inside, it almost felt like it was easier for Boston to get those layups right in the basket.
00:07:57It almost felt like Indiana was like, hey, you'll try and take as many threes as you want,
00:08:03but you'll end up trading them for twos, which is exactly what I criticized New York for.
00:08:07The opening night was like, how are you guys passing up open threes to take tough twos against a team that took 63s?
00:08:14The math's not going to work.
00:08:16This Indiana team, I find fascinating because of just their ability to say,
00:08:23defensively, we're not going to, let's say try hard, but it's not going to be our priority.
00:08:29Our main priority is getting good shots down the other end, and they always do.
00:08:33And even some of the tough ones that they make, like Pascal Siakam's three to win the game at the end of the game was not an easy shot.
00:08:41And Pascal's not the best three-point shooter in the world.
00:08:44So when you look at everything, first off, I want to thank everybody for not freaking out after a loss this year.
00:08:51Last year, I don't know about you, Sean, but I found it nauseating to just after every time the Celtics lost,
00:08:57everybody's having a meltdown, at least like today doesn't feel like it's so bad.
00:09:01Real quick, keep in mind, Sean's good buddy Bill Simmons used to, I don't know if he still does this,
00:09:08but way back when, back in the ESPN page two days, he used to talk about a team winning a championship and you get a grace period, right?
00:09:15Now, where we are in the world and sort of this, what have you done for me lately culture that we live in,
00:09:21I'm not so sure that grace period exists to the same degree that it used to, but I think some of that comes into play.
00:09:28Like if the Celtics weren't just coming off a championship, you would probably have a reaction to that game last night
00:09:35versus the more subdued, whatever, their 4-1.
00:09:40You'd also have a reaction to the game if they had just gotten blown out by 25,
00:09:44that would be different than them coming back from 22 down and forcing overtime and having a real chance to win.
00:09:50And doing it, by the way, with Pritchard and Keita on the floor, I think this weekend is going to be interesting in Charlotte
00:09:56because you get the first back-to-back without Orzingas, which means you're probably going to get some Keita this weekend.
00:10:01You're going to get different looks.
00:10:03But did we not have this conversation the night before either game four or game five of the finals,
00:10:09where we did this once and I said, the Celtics are about to walk through the looking glass to the other side,
00:10:14where you're not only talking about Tatum and Brown as champions, as guys that are going to have their numbers at the top of the building,
00:10:21about Drew Holiday and Al Horford going into the Hall of Fame.
00:10:24The other thing that comes with this is that all of the angst is going to be put on the teams that haven't won.
00:10:30There's not going to be a lot of conversation about the Celtics other than them ruining the game, shooting all the threes,
00:10:35and Joe finding a way to – I began the coach's show last night by saying,
00:10:40did you ever imagine one day, not that you'd win a championship, but you would open your mouth one day
00:10:45in a random radio interview with our flagship station and it was going to be a national topic the next day?
00:10:52And that is where we are with Joe.
00:10:55But the angst is going to be – you already can feel it with Milwaukee, with Philadelphia, with the Denver bench.
00:11:02That's where the angst is going to go.
00:11:04And meanwhile, the Celtics, unless they win 46 or 47 games or something like that happens,
00:11:09it won't – there'll be bad nights and people will react badly.
00:11:14Here's what you're going to get with the Celtics this year. Here's the negative.
00:11:17The Knights will come up where they go, what, eight for 38 from three and lose.
00:11:22And people will say, oh, they shoot too many threes and they've got to stop shooting threes.
00:11:25When they shoot threes, win 64 games, win a championship walking backwards, and start 4-0
00:11:31because they're shooting threes, nobody says anything about it.
00:11:34It's only on the nights that they lose people will complain about them shooting too many threes
00:11:39when everybody else in the league is trying to copy what they do.
00:11:43Yeah, that's my favorite part.
00:11:45People didn't watch last year and just say – last year was an abnormality that they won 64 games
00:11:52and went 16-3 in the playoffs and pretty much boat raced everybody to their 18th banner.
00:11:57Everybody complaining. That killed me.
00:12:00And again, it comes back to this particular point that you hammered – again, Sean, you had this in February.
00:12:07I want to say January, February you came on here and you were like, look, if everything goes,
00:12:11like it's gone the first couple of months of this season, this is going to be one of the best teams
00:12:15anybody's ever seen, and they're going to raise a banner, and it's going to be – this is going to be a –
00:12:20this is a championship team right here.
00:12:22And that particular segment that people ran with the first couple of days of the season drove me crazy
00:12:28because, again, we are devaluing how special this group truly is.
00:12:34And I mean group from Brad Stevens all the way down to like James Springer and Jordan Walsh
00:12:40and everybody at the end of the bench.
00:12:42This is a collective unit that is breaking the mold of basketball and rewriting a new chapter.
00:12:47Like we spoke about Simmons already.
00:12:49I was listening to him and Kurt Goldsberry talk about this new era of three-point shooting
00:12:54and how the Celtics have taken the torch from Steph Curry and those Warriors teams
00:13:00and elevated it to a whole new level.
00:13:02And now they're ushering in a whole new era of three-point shooting to the point where
00:13:09it's not just about the five guys that start this thing.
00:13:12The Celtics are bringing off the bench when they're fully healthy.
00:13:15A 6'1 point guard who, I don't know, is going to shoot 10 threes a game, hit 40 percent of them,
00:13:22and is the best buzzer-beater shooter, not named like Michael Jordan, history of the game.
00:13:26They bring off Sam Houser who shoots 40 percent from three.
00:13:30And then there's 30-whatever-year-old Al Horford who also shoots 40 percent from three.
00:13:34Like they're breaking the mold of shooting in contemporary basketball.
00:13:38And yet we still find ways to just distract and detract from how historically amazing this team is.
00:13:45This has honestly fueled my hatred to the point where I am now, I feel like I'm back in time
00:13:53and I'm a Heat fan when LeBron and Wayne and Bosh meet up.
00:13:56And I'm just like, bring me all your hate. This is delicious.
00:13:59I'm watching spectacular basketball night in and night out, and you guys complain about it?
00:14:04Go ahead, bring it on. I'm enjoying myself.
00:14:06First of all, you feel like they could get the kid that Peyton was playing out in the park,
00:14:10and throw him up there, and he would knock down.
00:14:13He would, too. He'd be all right, knocks you down.
00:14:15They'd be like, all right, yeah, get him. They'd be like, OK, great.
00:14:17It's the end of the quarter. Give it to the kid, right?
00:14:19And he'll run it up the floor and shoot the threes.
00:14:21The angst towards the way they're playing is interesting to me because it's almost as if you would hear people complaining,
00:14:31going, oh, they're throwing all these long passes for touchdowns now,
00:14:34and there's too much scoring, and whatever.
00:14:36I preferred when it was like three yards and a cloud of dust, and it was third and one.
00:14:41I don't quite understand the analogy.
00:14:44Like, oh, man, Gretzky and Messier, they're ruining the NHL, scoring six or seven goals a game.
00:14:49I want those. Where's the neutral zone trap?
00:14:52I want to see the Devils and Flyers play that one-nothing game.
00:14:55I don't quite understand where that comes from, other than it's the how's my driving theory,
00:14:59which I've used for many years, which certainly applies to my field,
00:15:02which is, again, a philosophy I've learned to live by to remind people that nobody ever, ever, ever picks up the phone number
00:15:11when they see that how's my driving bumper sticker and calls in and says, hey, I just want to tell you,
00:15:16I saw your driver back out of this loading dock into two lanes of traffic and merge perfectly on the highway,
00:15:21and I just wanted to let you know that.
00:15:22Jeff's kiss.
00:15:23Right. That doesn't happen.
00:15:25People are only going to complain, and it's a social media age.
00:15:28But, yeah, it is interesting.
00:15:31And the angst that came with last year, I'm sure I said it here.
00:15:34I think that was that quote that people pulled, I think, was when I was on with you guys,
00:15:38when I said, what if there is no game sixes or game sevens or something like that,
00:15:42which is what turned out to be true, because I've been around long enough to see it, right,
00:15:47to know that that's how things go, that teams that dominate like that in the regular season.
00:15:52And even 08, the funny thing about 08, that team did go wire to wire, which obviously this team won't,
00:15:59and last year's didn't either, because Philadelphia had first place for when the Celtics lost games,
00:16:03the sixth and seventh games last year, the Celtics lost after starting five and 0,
00:16:06so they didn't go wire to wire.
00:16:07The 08 team did, wire to wire in the regular season, wire to wire in the playoffs,
00:16:12and that team lost 10 playoff games.
00:16:14Yeah.
00:16:15There was all kinds of angst against Atlanta and LeBron and Cleveland and whatever,
00:16:19and that is, people look at the 08 team as the standard of, you know, all those 66 wins,
00:16:25wire to wire, never trailed in a playoff series, that is domination, and last year's team blew that away.
00:16:32They had a much higher scoring differential and lost three games in a playoff set, not 10.
00:16:37But people didn't appreciate that.
00:16:40I think there's going to be a little more appreciation now.
00:16:42I think seeing the rings and the banner and the grace, you're not going to get it from everybody,
00:16:47and you can choose to take one comment on Twitter and go, look at these fans.
00:16:50They don't appreciate.
00:16:51I think it's a different ballgame now, and people understand it.
00:16:55But at the time, what I kept saying was not, it wasn't about predicting that they were going to win.
00:16:59If you remember, it was more like, people, look at this.
00:17:02Don't, there was so much more angst for the 18 losses than there was joy in the 64 wins because of what had happened earlier.
00:17:1108 didn't have that.
00:17:1208 was its own thing that they won in their first year together.
00:17:17People had seen Tatum and Brown in the playoffs lose, and there was disappointment and fear, which I think this comes from the social media age.
00:17:26It's just much more fear of getting ragged on by fans of other teams and whatever.
00:17:32And no matter, you know, no matter how many of these, the game prep that I would use that I put online about the Celtics have done this amazing thing.
00:17:40It was always, there would always be a couple of people saying, yeah, but they haven't won a championship.
00:17:44The Celtics have won more playoff games than anybody in the last, yeah, but they've only won one championship.
00:17:48But, you know, even the night that people don't, if you listen to the social media crowd, you've got to tune some of that out.
00:17:57When the Celtics won, one of the things I called attention to that night was after years of, he can't win the big one.
00:18:04Jason Tatum being this guy that was a good player, but not a great player, whatever the narrative was.
00:18:09And then he wins at age 26.
00:18:12And I said it in one of the last four minutes of the call.
00:18:16I don't remember everything I said, but I know I referenced the fact that he now has more championships at age 26 than Michael Jordan, Shaq, Steph, all these guys combined.
00:18:28Because they didn't win at 26.
00:18:30And that was just something visceral to see, like understand that Tatum has not won a championship before all these guys.
00:18:36And when you put it out there, and of course, whenever a tweet goes crazy viral, there's always going to be people that see it.
00:18:41And there are people like, now do Kobe.
00:18:43How many did Kobe?
00:18:44Like, no, not the point.
00:18:46So there's always people that will try and pick apart and take stuff down.
00:18:51But at some point, instead of saying, I can't believe these people aren't enjoying it, you got to say, well, that's their problem.
00:18:57You're not enjoying it if you're worried about the people that are.

00:20:44I am curious, you know, you brought up, obviously, like you joked about it.
00:20:48Yeah, bringing the kid that Peyton played in the park and watch him bring threes.
00:20:52But to a certain degree, that is kind of where I wanted to go with this conversation.
00:20:56You want to bring the kid in?
00:20:57I want to bring the kid in.
00:20:58Give him that hat you brought out and trot him out there.
00:21:02He looked good. He wasn't afraid when Peyton was backing him down toward the basket.
00:21:07He wasn't intimidated. You know, give him credit.
00:21:09It was almost Devin Booker-like, right?
00:21:11It was like, hey, you're on a double team. It's open gym, man.
00:21:13I'll throw my elbow up. No big deal.
00:21:16I'm not worried about you, Peyton. You're not that big.
00:21:19We got into this a little bit, Ev, on last week's show with, as Sean has referenced a couple of times,
00:21:24the narrative, you know, the whole Celtics wrecking the NBA in the number of threes,
00:21:27as if this hasn't been going on.
00:21:29We haven't been building toward this literally for decades.
00:21:32But I think Evan called out a really good point, pardon me,
00:21:35with it's not just obviously the ability of the starting five.
00:21:39It's bringing Peyton. It's bringing Al. It's bringing Hauser.
00:21:43All these guys that can knock down the three.
00:21:45And this is, you know, this is worldwide.
00:21:48Like, the Celtics obviously are very deep and a proficient shooting team.
00:21:52But Bam Adebayo spent the offseason working on his three-point shot.
00:21:57He's taking two three-pointers a game right now.
00:21:59He was taking like five or six per in the preseason just to work on a shot.
00:22:04He is looking, even at this stage of his career, kind of like Al, you know, years back,
00:22:08on extending his range and becoming something of a different player away from the basket.
00:22:13And I just think, obviously, like this, and this is not like this hot take.
00:22:18This is an observation. This is just where we're going.
00:22:21And so, that in mind, how much credit do we give, you know, Brad and company,
00:22:27for being, I don't even think calling it ahead of the curve is the right way to put it.
00:22:34Because, again, they weren't really, maybe in terms of the volume they are,
00:22:38but in terms of the style they're not.
00:22:40When it comes to roster composition and having all of these guys who are bona fide,
00:22:45elite caliber shooters, or is this just where we're going?
00:22:50And in five years, every team, I'm not saying every team is going to be as good
00:22:55or as efficient, but every team is going to kind of look to play that way
00:23:00and kind of be built that way.
00:23:02I was cheating because I want to look up something.
00:23:04I want to bring up another name, the one name you didn't mention on the roster.
00:23:07And it's kind of funny when it comes to three-point shooting,
00:23:09and no one's brought this up yet.
00:23:11But I will answer the Brad one by saying something that,
00:23:15maybe not being ahead of the curve, but being very aware.
00:23:19He's still the coach. He was one of our coaches, shows, whatever, of all the years.
00:23:23You know, the eight years, it's a lot of time on the air.
00:23:26It's like when you think about, I always find it funny when watching the media
00:23:30wrestle with, you know, do jujitsu with Joe before every game,
00:23:35that they don't like getting in that contest.
00:23:37I'm like, well, I'm doing, I can do six, seven minutes with him every night.
00:23:40So you're always looking, the point is you're always looking for new stuff.
00:23:43And I asked Brad when the three-point shooting was really starting to skyrocket.
00:23:48And I said, do you think every sport is cyclical?
00:23:51In football, okay, first there's the 3-4, then there's the 4-3,
00:23:56then people go with the zone blitz.
00:23:57Everything seems to trend and go around in circles.
00:23:59Do you think one day the NBA will, do you think now that it's gotten crazy,
00:24:03with the volume of three-point shooting, it's going to go backwards,
00:24:05the other way, that eventually the game will shift back,
00:24:08rules will change and whatever?
00:24:09And he said, no, it's going to go the other way.
00:24:11Meaning that, and he called it exactly right.
00:24:13That he was saying in 2017, 2018, I'm guessing,
00:24:17that the three-point line essentially is going to become a suggestion.
00:24:21And that there's going to be more volume of threes and guys, you know,
00:24:24anticipating Trey Young's and the Damian Lillard's and the guys who just don't
00:24:28even step to the line and shoot from way behind the line.
00:24:31And he was right that the game was going to get extended.
00:24:34So since he-
00:24:35They knocked down a three-pointer last night from like five feet in front of
00:24:39the half-court line.
00:24:40Like you don't think about it anymore.
00:24:41Natural range at this point.
00:24:43Yeah, Trey Young crossed half-court.
00:24:44He can shoot, as the Celtics certainly know.
00:24:47But when I think about,
00:24:48the reason I tell that story is because if he was saying that to me in a
00:24:51random conversation, 2017, 2018,
00:24:53he was already thinking ahead to what the game was going to be.
00:24:57And now here we are,
00:24:59number of years later that a guy who had a roster when he coached his final
00:25:03game, that had Romeo Lankford,
00:25:06Evan Fournier and Tristan Thompson starting in a playoff game.
00:25:11Three years later,
00:25:13put together a team that walked backwards into a championship.
00:25:16And so if that's the brain we're talking about,
00:25:19I always think back to that moment that, yeah, he was always, you know,
00:25:23guys who like that are always thinking ahead of the curb or ahead of everybody
00:25:27else. No doubt. And by the way,
00:25:29you're talking about all the guys you mentioned, everybody can cheat.
00:25:32You're bringing Sam Houser, Peyton Pritchard.
00:25:34You know who was a three-point shooter when he first came into the league?
00:25:37Luke Cornett.
00:25:38Luke Cornett took a ton of threes because you remember seeing him when he
00:25:42first came into the league.
00:25:43And I'm looking it up just for my own amusement, but he played,
00:25:46he was taking a three-pointer about every five minutes or so playing with the
00:25:51Knicks, which is what these guys do.
00:25:53Think about that over like 40 minutes, that's seven or eight threes.
00:25:56So when Luke Cornett came into the league, he was shooting threes.
00:25:59And he's the one guy that doesn't do it.
00:26:01You get the feeling like you're saving up for this big, like, you know,
00:26:04surprise secret moment when Luke Cornett sneaks up on the three-point line.
00:26:07And it's so funny that in this trend in which guys who never took threes
00:26:11before now take a high volume, Luke Cornett came into the league,
00:26:14shooting threes. And now he, now he never does.
00:26:18Yeah. It's, it's funny how things have changed in,
00:26:21in Cornett's role over the five years now that he's been on the Celtics,
00:26:26you know, you'd think that he'd be shooting even more threes,
00:26:28but I don't even think he even looks at taking a three anymore.
00:26:31He's more of just like a, a pick and dive guy and an energy guy,
00:26:34the offensive glass.
00:26:35And of course we now have the famed Cornett contest that is spread to
00:26:39several people on the Celtics. Now.
00:26:41I don't mean to like change subjects so drastically Kaufman.
00:26:45So I apologize if I'm taking this in a different direction.
00:26:47You want to talk about Drake Mase concussion? No,
00:26:49but I am also very interested in that because we have Sean and we have a
00:26:54different, interesting perspective on, on things.
00:26:57And we've talked a lot about, Oh, wait,
00:26:59in comparison to last year's team and we all argue the same thing all the
00:27:04time. I think Sean, you've said this ad nauseam, the 0-9 team, you know,
00:27:08barring injury probably would have done the same thing. If we,
00:27:11for being honest to ourselves,
00:27:12they were tremendous to start the year injuries, unfortunately.
00:27:15Keep Laker fans out in the front row when you say that, but okay. Yeah,
00:27:18I hear you. I hear you. I get it. I get it.
00:27:21But one of the things that as we get ready for this season and we're looking
00:27:24at things,
00:27:27what boxes are you looking for this Celtics team to check that would emulate
00:27:34a little bit of that 0-9 magic minus the injury issues that they had in that
00:27:39season?
00:27:40Well, you know, it's interesting. You see this with a lot of champions.
00:27:43It's not just this team and you've got the separate issues with,
00:27:46with Jason and Jalen and the Olympic stuff.
00:27:48And every team's got little stuff that they come back with,
00:27:50but there's that general overwhelming feeling that, Oh,
00:27:53they've won the championships.
00:27:54They're going to take their foot off the gas pedal, whatever.
00:27:56And that generally is not how it goes. And it certainly didn't in a way.
00:27:59When everyone said, Oh, they won. So they're not going to be great.
00:28:02And then they lost the third game of the year and they got killed.
00:28:05And I remember even in the pre-social media age, some people,
00:28:08whatever the equivalent of in 2008 was of people freaking out on social media,
00:28:13people were doing that. They got killed at Indiana, actually.
00:28:16That was where their first loss was. Didn't even cry.
00:28:19I called the game last night.
00:28:20It didn't occur to me that the first loss defending the title was at Indiana.
00:28:23It was in the same building in 08. They didn't play well and they got beat.
00:28:26And everyone's like, Oh, they're not the same team,
00:28:28but they were last year because they hadn't had a loss like that the previous
00:28:31season. And what did they do? They won 25 of the next 26.
00:28:35After that, there were 27 and two going into the Christmas game.
00:28:38So I think teams come back, you know, sort of geared up and it's,
00:28:43it's less to do with trying to prove people wrong,
00:28:45that there's a confidence that comes with winning a championship.
00:28:48It's actually confidence and continuity.
00:28:50You put those two things together and that's a dangerous combination.
00:28:54And the opening night game was a visceral example of two teams that were not
00:28:58going at the,
00:28:59there were two trains that were not moving at the same speed when the starting
00:29:03gun went off and the Knicks,
00:29:05who I think are going to be really good and we'll figure everything out.
00:29:09If they can stay healthy, you know, like everybody, it's always healthy.
00:29:12Cause there's always, we talk in week one of the season,
00:29:14there are some significant player on a championship caliber team that is going
00:29:18to get hurt. It's how it happens. It's always how it happens.
00:29:21There's some major plot twist coming that we had no idea on October 31st.
00:29:25That's going to change the trajectory of the season.
00:29:27But you saw opening night, the Knicks were not a new team.
00:29:32But they were still, you know,
00:29:33ramping up to what they're going to be and the Celtics just hit the ground
00:29:37running because they know who they are and they know what they're going to be.
00:29:41So the answer to that question is you just want to see them stay healthy.
00:29:44I want to see more nights like last night where they get challenged so
00:29:49athletically at the three point line that those shots don't come as easy.
00:29:53And how do you adjust to that? How do you manage the Porzingis injury?
00:29:58How do you manage everybody playing these big minutes?
00:30:00It was game, you know, at some point,
00:30:02when is Jason Tate no longer a machine that can play 40 minutes at this crazy
00:30:07high level every night? I don't know. We're not there yet, but let's,
00:30:10let's enjoy these times that you're not.
00:30:12So I think how you manage the 82 game season and how teams adjust,
00:30:18the Celtics have,
00:30:19if they've broken the league as far as shooting the threes and changing the
00:30:22way the game is played,
00:30:23you don't think there's 29 other teams trying to figure out how to stop that.
00:30:26Not to mention the fact that one of the reasons, and what's that old,
00:30:29the one people use way too much about iron sharpening iron that you now,
00:30:33it's already been this way with the Celtics the last few years,
00:30:36but now you really are the main event on a lot of teams scheduled.
00:30:41And that is the fun part. I remember it with Golden State.
00:30:44Remember when the Celtics were sort of starting to come back and you had the,
00:30:47it's the Evan Turner, Jay Crowder Celtics, you know,
00:30:50under Brad Stephens and a scrappy insurgency.
00:30:52And when Golden State was on the schedule,
00:30:54that was a big night when Golden State came to town,
00:30:57just like in previous generations, before I was in the league,
00:30:59I'm sure when the bulls came to town, that was a big night in the league.
00:31:02It is a big weekend here in Charlotte because the champs are here.
00:31:06And that's the beauty of you.
00:31:08You better stay sharp because everybody wants you on their resume.
00:31:11I thought we saw that in Detroit Saturday night.
00:31:14And that is the,
00:31:15the beauty of this season, particularly as I pointed this out,
00:31:18the Celtics are on an outrageous number of national TV games this year.
00:31:21I mean, it is unprecedented.
00:31:22And this next stretch of games after the Golden State game on Wednesday,
00:31:25which is the ESPN game,
00:31:26and you're going to get the,
00:31:27the A crew with Mike Breen on Wednesday night after that game,
00:31:30I think the next 15 or so are just sort of,
00:31:33you know,
00:31:34you know,
00:31:35you're going to get the,
00:31:36you know,
00:31:37you're going to get the,
00:31:38you know,
00:31:39you're going to get the,
00:31:40you know,
00:31:41you're going to get the,
00:31:42you know,
00:31:4315 or so are just sort of League Pass,
00:31:46Local Cable,
00:31:47under the Radar games.
00:31:48And in some ways those are more fun because again,
00:31:51you become the target that everybody wants to put on their resume.
00:31:54By the way,
00:31:55after that,
00:31:56when we get to early December,
00:31:57literally every other game is going to be on national TV.
00:31:59It's like 30 of the last 60.
00:32:01I mean,
00:32:02and again,
00:32:03that's another issue for another time,
00:32:04but that's the direction the NBA is going.
00:32:06So
00:32:07Just to piggyback off that idea real quick,
00:32:10Real quick, Kaufman, I remember the Golden State coming to town years, and I was at the
00:32:15garden the night they were, I think, what, 26 straight, and Boston took it one more time,
00:32:20and they went, they lost that game the next night in Milwaukee, Golden State lost their
00:32:25winning streak, and Draymond goes, you can take the Celtics through that, right?
00:32:28They beat us up last night, and I will tell you, again, I live in the Berkshires, I'm
00:32:32two and a half, three hours west of Boston.
00:32:35So coming into town, everybody, that's all anybody want to talk about, that was the only
00:32:43thing people were, the only thing on talk radio that day was that, you could tell that
00:32:47there was a different type of energy and juice in Boston that night because Golden State
00:32:52was in town, and it was one of the best environments I've ever been in, it was cool.
00:32:56Yeah, it's amazing, and think about the highlights of that era, the Celtics ending the, you know,
00:33:02they didn't end the win streak that night, but they ended the home court winning streak,
00:33:06you know, out in Oakland, and that's one of the signature moments of that Avery Bradley,
00:33:11Jay Crowder, Evan Turner era, was winning that game, and so it matters, and that is,
00:33:19I love the season, listen, I chose the job I chose because I didn't want to give up the
00:33:23playoff games, and obviously the big games matter, and telling the story matters, but
00:33:27these are, I think these nights are fun too.
00:33:30The night in Detroit is fun, when young players, remember, as time goes by, all of a sudden
00:33:35young players are coming out of school, and it used to be, wow, Jason Tatum and Jalen
00:33:39Brown, and all of a sudden you're playing against LeBron and Steph, guess where we are
00:33:43now?
00:33:44Now we are, kids are coming out of college, and oh my God, I got to guard Jason Tatum,
00:33:48like it happens fast, and it's cool to see.
00:33:54We referenced a couple of times, you know, trying to repeat, obviously, and that 0-9
00:33:59season that, you know, very well could have been a back-to-back for the Celtics, if not
00:34:03for that Garnett injury, and we've talked about that extensively before, but, you know,
00:34:08with KG, one thing I always enjoy about you being here, Sean, is obviously your ability
00:34:13to talk about...
00:34:14There's got to be many things, I would imagine there's many, many things.
00:34:16Well, I said one of the things, there are a great few things, is your ability to talk
00:34:22about this team in a historical context, because obviously, as we always like to joke,
00:34:25you are the longtime voice of the team, and so, you know, going back to even just opening
00:34:31night, obviously a week ago or whatever it was, that I often joke on this show, like
00:34:36nobody loves themselves a title and a party like the 0-8 Celtics.
00:34:42That team might be more championship happy than any team that I've ever seen before,
00:34:46but it was not a big surprise that KG and Pierce, even Ray, these guys back in the building
00:34:52for the ring ceremony, the banner raising, all of it, do you know, because it's not something
00:34:57we tend to hear about from today's players, if any relationships are forming there to
00:35:03where like Tatum, Brown, whomever, like there have been any conversations with that not
00:35:10old guard, old guard, but most recent old guard about what it does take and how to get
00:35:16over the hump and how to, you know, be the ones with the target on their backs or, you
00:35:20know, red light on their foreheads, as Missoula likes to say in all of these things.
00:35:25I'd go farther to say that both, you know, Jason and Jalen, who that's primarily obviously
00:35:28who you're talking about here, they use those opportunities to ask, they have those kind
00:35:32of minds anyway.
00:35:34They always ask questions.
00:35:35There's a funny one, I may have told you this before.
00:35:38So the first couple of years Jason's around, he knew that Max played in the league.
00:35:43It's interesting how it happens with younger players and how history, history seeps into
00:35:49your brain differently.
00:35:51And you know, like JT and Max were cool and he knew that Max had played in the league,
00:35:55but it wasn't until Max did the 30 for 30, the Celtic Laker 30 for 30, that I remember
00:36:01JT coming back that fall and he was much more excited about Max.
00:36:07You know, that's where, it's where the history creeps in.
00:36:11And because we are all old now, we can run through everything that happened in 2008.
00:36:15Oh yeah, I remember that Atlanta series and then game seven with the Cavs and it went
00:36:19back and forth.
00:36:21One of the unique things about my job, yeah, you're the voice of the Celtics, but you're
00:36:25also the voice of the Celtics for people who are 90 and people who are nine.
00:36:30And while we can recite every detail of 08, 16 years is a long time.
00:36:35And I tried to sort of shout that out again at the call at the end of the championship
00:36:39game that there's every generation, you know, for the oldest generation, they got one more
00:36:43and for the children of the eighties, they get one as adults and the, you know, or the,
00:36:47you know, the children of 08 get one as adults, the children of 08 of the eighties get one
00:36:51for their kids.
00:36:52And now the kids have their own, everyone's going to have their own perspective.
00:36:56And to me, when I first took this job, people would go, you know, when Larry would come
00:37:02back or Kevin McHale would come back and you'd see people worship the eighties.
00:37:05And now the 08 guys, that's the same thing when they walk around the building.
00:37:10And I know as this is going on, I'm thinking about what is Jason Tatum Knight going to
00:37:14be like?
00:37:15What's Jalen Brown Knight going to be like?
00:37:17What's it going to be like when Tatum and Brown walk in the game?
00:37:21You know, is, is JT going to stick around long enough to play with Deuce, you know,
00:37:25for, you know, maybe JJ Reddick's son will be coaching the Celtics when, you know, like
00:37:31Jason Tatum's in his 20 something year.
00:37:33And so once in a while you try to step back and have a broad view, like tomorrow night
00:37:40we're going to play Charlotte and that game is going to have its own X's and O's and
00:37:44its own storyline within the game.
00:37:46But I also like to have a, particularly on, you know, important nights when you're at
00:37:51the garden and you're under all those banners, that that's the point.
00:37:54Like, where does this fit?
00:37:55Where's the connectivity between the generations?
00:37:57And I think, you know, bringing it back to what you asked, I think you got a lot of guys
00:38:01in that room that do appreciate and like to tap into what those guys bring.
00:38:05Yeah.
00:38:06I mean, that's reflected, I think, a little bit of starting five.
00:38:09I don't know if you caught that, Sean, but KG is a prominent, not a prominent, but he's
00:38:14a voice in this thing.
00:38:16And you can tell when he talks about Tatum, he's talking about something a little bit
00:38:19different, you know, like as he's watching Tatum kind of like go through all the checkpoints
00:38:26you have to check as you win a title.
00:38:28You could tell that KG and him have had some serious conversations about winning a title
00:38:32and how excited that KG was for, especially Tatum and Brown, that they got through the
00:38:37hump and were able to break through and win a title because he knows what it means to
00:38:40win a title in Boston.
00:38:41You know, like.
00:38:42Just as Bill Russell was excited for KG.
00:38:44See how it works generationally, because there's very few people who can understand.
00:38:49We can sit here and talk for hours about winning a championship, whatever, but we don't know.
00:38:53It's a very select club that you get into, and it meant so much to KG.
00:38:57I remember when KG and Paul Pierce and Ray Allen got together, the three of them, none
00:39:03had ever been to the finals, let alone winning a championship.
00:39:06And the clock was obviously, the clock was ticking on the new big three era the day it
00:39:10started.
00:39:11Yeah.
00:39:12Because they were all 30.
00:39:13No, we all looked at it as a three year window at the time.
00:39:15Yeah.
00:39:17about this before, but I remember the flight back from LA after losing game seven in 2010.
00:39:27I got on that plane thinking the era, that was it, that it was over and history will
00:39:33record it.
00:39:34People will write their books or whatever, but I guarantee you it changed on that flight
00:39:38that the second act, those next three years was born on that flight back.
00:39:45I remember saying something to KG that I would not have said to him had I thought everybody
00:39:50was coming back and that we're going to do another three years of this, because it just
00:39:54felt like that was it at the time.
00:39:56So you don't really know, but the moral of that story was always, whenever you're close
00:40:02to it, you got to chase it.
00:40:05Yeah.
00:40:06Like right now, they double down on it, right?
00:40:09Yeah.
00:40:10As a nice way to have two ends of the spectrum.
00:40:13You have the Celtics were like, we're bringing this whole team back.
00:40:17We're going to team up for sale.
00:40:18We don't care.
00:40:20Like this is the group.
00:40:21This is it.
00:40:22We're diving headfirst.
00:40:23And then you have on the other side, you have Denver who has really struggled to have any
00:40:30sort of good feeling at all whatsoever about how they've started their season.
00:40:33They had the best player in the world and yet they're a relative disappointment.
00:40:37And you look at Boston saying, we're, we're, we're bringing everybody back.
00:40:41And meanwhile, over here in Denver, oh, you know, there goes Bruce Brown and there goes
00:40:45KCP.
00:40:46And now it's like, what are we, if Jamal Murray's not amazing, what are we doing here?
00:40:52Yeah.
00:40:53But Denver, Denver's the outlier in what you're saying, because the Knicks were close last
00:40:57year.
00:40:58Minnesota was close last year, you know, Dallas and Philadelphia added Paul George.
00:41:02So teams that were the teams that are closer, we have a strange year, obviously happening
00:41:06in the league.
00:41:07But in that, the haves and the have nots, the gap has grown.
00:41:12We have a real chance to have six or seven crazy high level teams, and there's a real
00:41:16chance to have what, five, six teams that don't win 20 games.
00:41:19I mean, it never works out that way.
00:41:20And already, you know, Brooklyn's winning games here early and Portland had a win last
00:41:24night.
00:41:25Then teams that you think are never, you know, you never think you're going to win.
00:41:27Well, I think you have a night.
00:41:29Remember this, because this is an odd thing.
00:41:30It's just jumping into my head as we say it, Washington, Portland, Brooklyn, and Charlotte
00:41:36all won last night on October 30th.
00:41:40Let's see if that happens again this year, that all four of those teams win.
00:41:43We've got to find a way to make this profitable.
00:41:47You're the gambling guy.
00:41:48So let's talk about this later off camera.
00:41:50If it happens again, somebody wins that hat.
00:41:52Parlay though, buddy, parlay though.
00:41:55Well, we have to look at how many times on the calendar that all four of those teams
00:41:59are in action on the same night.
00:42:01By the way, here's how old I am that when I came in the league, gambling was the third
00:42:07rail.
00:42:08You die.
00:42:10It was a verboten topic.
00:42:13You know, we had the Tim Donaghy thing that we went through.
00:42:15When you came in the league, I mean, 10 years ago.
00:42:17It was right.
00:42:18And now it's literally even doing the games with scowl on TV a couple of years ago.
00:42:24It was, it was overwhelmed.
00:42:26You were drowning in gambling stuff.
00:42:28And it was almost as if it was, you know, integrated into the game.
00:42:31It was like, hey, this three in the air is brought to you by if he makes it.
00:42:34And it was, it's like, I got to cut you off because you reminded me of something that
00:42:40I audibly laughed at when opening night, I even I texted a buddy right after it happened.
00:42:47So I, I, I'm out to dinner just before the game, got home in time for tip off and all
00:42:54that.
00:42:55And I was listening to you guys broadcasting the ceremony and talking about it.
00:43:00And you asking Max about how you, you know, follow the emotions of all that and play a
00:43:05game and everything.
00:43:06But you said like, this was like the out cue to break, you know, you're like in tonight's,
00:43:10you know, ring and banner ceremony presented by bed MGM on the draft Kings radio, Celtics
00:43:17radio network.
00:43:18I'm going, good God, like who let that happen?
00:43:22I mean, that's a whole other conversation.
00:43:25But what are we doing?
00:43:26And, and so like, to your point, it's just, it's overwhelming now.
00:43:31And we obviously we have the Jonathan Porter thing happened, again, not a big deal.
00:43:34And it's, it's comical that people think that, you know, guys who are making $40 million
00:43:38a year are somehow going to be affected by, by these, by the gambling and stuff that's
00:43:42going on.
00:43:43But it's, it's the way of the world.
00:43:44And again, you just have to change your, you have to change your approach this year.
00:43:49We are, we've done the, the quote unquote pivot to video, right?
00:43:53Which was inevitable and probably kind of years overdue.
00:43:56And it's because that is how people are accustomed now.
00:43:59You can't fight against it.
00:44:02When the social media stuff happened, a lot of my colleagues were, well, I'm not going
00:44:05to tweet during games and I'm not going to whatever I'm like, well, that's where you,
00:44:09we don't get to decide how people want to enjoy our product.
00:44:14Our job is to deliver it to them and however they want it.
00:44:17My son just turned 13 and his life until I can wrestle the screen away from him every
00:44:22night after we do his homework is YouTube.
00:44:26And there are young people that watch, they take in the product the way they want to take
00:44:31it in.
00:44:32And it's our job to deliver it to them in a way that they want it.
00:44:35Not to sit here and say, no, watch the game on, watch the game on basic cable.
00:44:39It's all going away.
00:44:40Everything's going to be on the apps.
00:44:41You know, we're in a dramatic change in the NBA as to the way the games are going to be
00:44:46delivered.
00:44:48And, you know, this network's going to have them and this app is going to have them.
00:44:52And you just have to kind of go with it.
00:44:56The Celtics won a championship, right?
00:44:57And to some degree, because of what we were saying earlier, Brad Stevens could see what
00:45:01was going to happen.
00:45:03In my field, it's the same thing.
00:45:04The people are going to be successful, see what's going to happen in three to five years
00:45:08and you are prepared for it.
00:45:11It's no different.
00:45:12All right.
00:45:13We'll take a quick break, get right back to the show.
00:45:16What we got to tell you, today's show, it is powered by game time.
00:45:19Game time is the easiest place to score tickets to whatever event you want to go to.
00:45:25Sure, basketball is coming, football's in full swing, baseball, depends where you live,
00:45:29I guess, but that's just generally behind us.
00:45:31You have hockey, that's going on right now.
00:45:33You want to swoop out to the garden, watch the bees, but it's not just sports.
00:45:37There's concerts, there's comedy, theater.
00:45:39Tickets can be found all over the place at game time.
00:45:43There's even a new feature called Game Time Picks that makes getting tickets to see your
00:45:46favorite teams play live even easier, Ev, and Game Time Picks, it filters out all the
00:45:52fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats so that you don't have to waste
00:45:58time searching through thousands of tickets.
00:46:00And they have this new thing, Kauffman, called the Super Deal.
00:46:02I don't know if you've seen this yet, if you've been perusing the game time app, but basically
00:46:06what happens is game time will show you.
00:46:08You pick like a, we always talk about this on the show, let's say we wanted to go to
00:46:11the opening night, and you pick a, you're looking through the ticket options, they'll
00:46:15have something called the Super Deal, which means it's in the top 1% of all tickets available
00:46:21for that event.
00:46:22If it has that Super Deal, you better pounce immediately because those tickets will not
00:46:27be there long.
00:46:28They're too good of a deal.
00:46:29Lowest price guarantee, like Ev said.
00:46:31So download the game time app, create an account, use the code, it is CLNS for $20 off your
00:46:37first purchase.
00:46:38Again, that code CLNS.
00:46:41Terms do apply.
00:46:42Again, create an account, redeem the code, CLNS, $20 off.
00:46:46Download game time today.
00:46:48What time is it?
00:46:49Game time.
00:46:50Let's get back to the show.
00:46:51I don't know if you have any inside info on this, but we got a little bit of an update
00:46:54on Chris Stapp's Porzingis from Shams yesterday about him coming back potentially in December.
00:47:00He is, you know, the, I will say the game highlighted him shooting a little bit pre-game
00:47:07noting that he's, you know, working his way to get back.
00:47:11Any idea on the progress of what I would call the Celtics cheat code waiting in the wings
00:47:16here?
00:47:17I think it's sort of a, I don't say it's a highly guarded secret so much as it isn't
00:47:21like you're rushing, the very second he's able to play, you're not trying to cram him
00:47:26into a playoff game in the deciding game, right, in the Dallas series.
00:47:29So I think it's a matter of, I think clearly he is, I don't want to say ahead because that
00:47:35one of the dumbest things that have become an accepted part, Doc Rivers used to hit on
00:47:39this all the time.
00:47:40People would say, well, it's four to six weeks.
00:47:42What is that?
00:47:43You have no idea.
00:47:44As a player who's been through an injury, it's the worst thing to put a label on it
00:47:46when a guy is going to come back.
00:47:48You just have a basic idea.
00:47:49He's moving really well.
00:47:50He's not doing anything hard.
00:47:51He's not doing contact stuff like that.
00:47:54I think it's certainly reasonable to think at this stage, as we enter the month of November,
00:47:58the way he's moving around that he certainly could be available by December.
00:48:04But again, how much does that matter?
00:48:07And when you have two things going for you, you have with the loss last night, let me
00:48:11do it in my head, the Celtics are now 35 and seven in the 42 games they played without
00:48:16him.
00:48:17Stop.
00:48:18Pause for a second.
00:48:19Ponder that again.
00:48:2035 and seven in the 42 games without him.
00:48:23And number two, knowing you're going to want him to play, including the playoffs.
00:48:28If you could script it, you would want to be able to be available for the playoffs.
00:48:34You want him to play what?
00:48:35Answer this.
00:48:36It's a rhetorical question.
00:48:37But how many games would you want him to play in the regular season?
00:48:3925?
00:48:4030?
00:48:41It doesn't matter as long as he's...
00:48:43So therefore, you add him in December, he doesn't play back-to-backs, it's going to
00:48:49be what it's going to be.
00:48:50I've been saying, Ed, you know this, I've been saying on this show for months, in my
00:48:55mind, and this isn't me saying this is how it will play out, I'm sure it'll be earlier,
00:49:00but in my mind, if he's not back till January, I don't care.
00:49:06At all.
00:49:07There is, to Sean's point, and the point we've made on this show a number of times, there
00:49:12is zero rush, Celtics are very good without him, and this regular season stuff, I always
00:49:21implore people, enjoy it.
00:49:23Enjoy the ride.
00:49:24It's game-to-game, it's thrilling, it's fun.
00:49:28Last night's game in the big picture, did it mean anything?
00:49:30No, but it was a lot of fun to watch there, the comeback and almost win in overtime and
00:49:35all that stuff.
00:49:37But Kristaps Porzingis just has to be healthy come April and beyond, and hopefully can make
00:49:44it through a playoff run without injury.
00:49:46Probably won't, there'll probably be some sort of a setback, but hopefully he is largely
00:49:49available as he was throughout, you know, I don't know, up and down last year through
00:49:54the playoffs, obviously.
00:49:56It doesn't matter, if he comes back in November, if he comes back in January, that has zero
00:50:01impact not only on my life, but on the Celtics' lives.
00:50:05There's an impact on my life.
00:50:07I genuinely enjoy watching Kristaps play because, at least for the Celtics, he really likes
00:50:12playing for this team.
00:50:14You can just see the positive energy come out, and I just, I don't know, I dig the vibe
00:50:19of him and Jalen.
00:50:20Yeah, they just don't need it though, is my point.
00:50:21They don't need it.
00:50:22I know, I know.
00:50:23I'm being selfish.
00:50:25I can report this, that 14 months of being here, the dude has not stopped smiling once.
00:50:30It's my favorite joke, because it's clear that he is really enjoying himself.
00:50:34Has this worked out, Sean, a lot?
00:50:37And like, put the championship aside.
00:50:39Obviously, you know, the championship means everything worked out.
00:50:43But just the Kristaps experience, to your point about the nonstop smiling in 14 months,
00:50:48you know, when that trade happened, as I'm sure you recall, and you know, there were
00:50:53a lot of doubters.
00:50:55A lot of people on this show, there were skeptics of that deal and what it was going to look
00:50:58like and how he was going to play, what kind of player he was previously elsewhere, what
00:51:02kind of role he was going to have, just how it was all going to work.
00:51:06And obviously, there are elements of that that were based around not just KP coming
00:51:12in, but Marcus Smart going out, and those things were solidified when Drew Holliday
00:51:17was acquired.
00:51:18But, you know, let's skip over that and just get to, you know, opening night last year
00:51:21and beyond.
00:51:23Was this Porzingis thing, for him specifically, worked out better than you expected, or was
00:51:29this what you expected?
00:51:30Again, outcome of the title aside.
00:51:33Anyone who said this is exactly what they expected, unless you're, you know, Brad Stevens
00:51:37or Mike Zarin, this is, you know, it was pie in the sky.
00:51:40And I go back to the fact that look at how crazy successful the Celtics were running
00:51:45post-ups with KP last year.
00:51:47And that was the one thing.
00:51:49In Dallas, it was horrendous.
00:51:50That's what Rick Carlisle wanted to do with him in Dallas, and it did not work out at
00:51:54all.
00:51:55So there were, listen, KP had his own Beach Boys song going, right?
00:51:58He had his own struggles in New York and in Dallas, and he had, he was bringing baggage
00:52:03and stuff, right, that he was bringing to the party.
00:52:05And it was a matter of, it was like when Isaiah Thomas came to the Celtics, that they needed
00:52:10each other.
00:52:11They fit together.
00:52:13And there was a KP element there.
00:52:14I think the other side of it was, we were all, and I like to think I'm not guilty of
00:52:18this stuff too, that I can be a 30,000 foot, see the whole field because I've been doing
00:52:23this so long, as you'd like to point out.
00:52:26But I think a lot of us continue to, maybe to this day, see Marcus with our heart and
00:52:30not with our eyes.
00:52:32And I, particularly as he moves as a guy who was so physical with that body and gave so
00:52:37much that maybe it's, there's that, those cold Belichickian NFL moves, right?
00:52:44When you...
00:52:45Break down on him a bit.
00:52:46And it's happening now.
00:52:48He got off to a rough start.
00:52:49He got hurt again last night.
00:52:50And it's, listen, look at the games played for Brogdon, for Smart, for Rob Williams the
00:52:57year or two before, and look at what's happened since the Celtics made the moves.
00:53:01And we're making these jokes about nobody wanted to take a call from Danny.
00:53:05Why aren't you making the same jokes about not taking the call from Brett?
00:53:08Well, I think that's obvious now.
00:53:10I mean, the guys, the guy doesn't miss.
00:53:11I mean, the Derek White trade started everything and everybody wanted to give him a hard time
00:53:16for that.
00:53:18The Al Horford trade started everything.
00:53:20Well, you could.
00:53:22It was a great move.
00:53:23Kemba was shot and Al's been, can you, do you, are you mystified by this Al Horford
00:53:29thing?
00:53:30I mean, he is way up there.
00:53:33Want a soundbite?
00:53:34Go ahead.
00:53:35Want something you can pull and say, Grandy says this thing.
00:53:39What an outrageous...
00:53:40Absolutely.
00:53:41This is what we live for.
00:53:42Here it is.
00:53:43Whatever you do, make sure, I'll pause so you can cut it off and then take it completely
00:53:46out of context.
00:53:47Let's go.
00:53:48Show me how it's done.
00:53:49It's the best.
00:53:50You ready?
00:53:51Start it with future Hall of Famer, Al Horford.
00:53:53Well, that's an easy one.
00:53:55He's going to be, because we talked about this.
00:53:57He's got the two championships in college.
00:53:58Yeah, there's no doubt.
00:53:59Basketball Hall of Fame, so Al's going in.
00:54:01But here's a...
00:54:02Everybody pause.
00:54:03Ready?
00:54:04Three, two, one.
00:54:05Al Horford has essentially become Tom Brady.
00:54:08Pause.
00:54:09I'll explain in a second.
00:54:10But so you can have it in and of itself, just in context.
00:54:14In that Al is basically the same, what Tom Brady was doing at 38, 39, 40, and obviously
00:54:20he was at a much higher level and he was an MVP caliber player, but he was like the same
00:54:24guy.
00:54:25There was no drop-off.
00:54:26And that's what's happening here with Al.
00:54:28He's the same guy at 34, 30.
00:54:30That's not supposed to happen.
00:54:32And what Al Horford was three or four years ago, he still is, and he's still giving you
00:54:36the same level of play at, you know, and it's obviously very early in his 38-year-old season,
00:54:42but he looks like he's the exact same guy.
00:54:44And again, managing the minutes matters, and him not playing, I'm sure he won't play one
00:54:48of the games this weekend in the back-to-back, and you'll manage him throughout the season.
00:54:51And that's more the Porzingis thing, is how much more are you leaning on Al, and you're
00:54:55going to have to use Cato more, and Tillman, and things like that.
00:54:58But it is stunning what a critical player he was.
00:55:03And I always, I tell the story of running into Al the fall of 2019.
00:55:09We're still traveling for the pandemic craziness.
00:55:12The Sixers and Celtics were in the same hotel in New York, I think it was, and, you know,
00:55:17the elevator door opens, and we're in the lobby, and I see Al.
00:55:20And you're catching up with Al, and it just, it's a moment that we refer back to because
00:55:26when he came back, and when I saw him that night, even though he was a Sixer, it felt
00:55:31like he never left.
00:55:33It just felt like he never, when he walked back in, it was almost as if he was just on
00:55:37vacation for a couple of years, and just, and came back home.
00:55:41But it did start with Kemba, who, we had a highlight in our game last night, it was five
00:55:44years ago, Kemba had like a game winner.
00:55:47Remember, Kemba didn't play well in his first game at Philadelphia, opening night, and then
00:55:51the Celtics went off on 110 in a row, and had the best record in the NBA in that 19-20
00:55:57season.
00:55:58And Kemba, who wanted so much to be a Celtic, he never got to play a playoff game at home.
00:56:06Because the pandemic hit in 2020, and everything was in the bubble, and the next year he was
00:56:09hurt in that playoff series, and didn't play in those home games.
00:56:13That was the reason that you had like Evan Fournier and guys in the starting lineup,
00:56:16because Jalen was hurt, and Kemba was hurt.
00:56:18But yeah, the game had changed, and you could do the whole sliding door thing about either
00:56:24not making the Isaiah Thomas trade, or not making the, was the Kemba trade a reaction
00:56:28to having to fill the Kyrie Irving spot?
00:56:33But it was, you know, Brad Stevens, as we've said, the guy who preached all those years
00:56:37about just hitting singles, he's like Freddie Freeman every time.
00:56:42You know, he's just driving them into the gap.
00:56:46How unfair is it to have, I don't want to hear any, Juan Soto should not be allowed
00:56:50to go to the Dodgers, if that even becomes a conversation.
00:56:52It's so unfair as it is.
00:56:56Well, you can thank Otani for deferring all his money to future players.
00:57:00Salary cap.
00:57:01Right?
00:57:02No, no, yeah, the Otani.
00:57:03Yeah, deferring all his money.
00:57:05Are we going to have like a Bobby Bonilla day for Otani in LA when he gets to pick up
00:57:09a big, huge check?
00:57:10I think it'll be a little more celebratory, however, when the Bobby Bonilla Mets didn't
00:57:17come quite as close to winning a championship.
00:57:20Still my favorite thing every summer is Bobby Bonilla day at City.
00:57:24It's the best.
00:57:25It's running, there's only a few left.
00:57:26It's winding down.
00:57:27Yeah, I was going to think, are we all going to make it?
00:57:30Are we all going to live long enough to see the end of Bobby Bonilla day, who has a famous
00:57:35bad contract the Mets gave out years ago, if you don't know, and every year he still
00:57:38gets a million dollar check on July 1st.
00:57:40It's the best.
00:57:41It's the equivalent, it's the second best deal ever made.
00:57:44The deal that the, I teach my son that the greatest business deal ever made, not in sports,
00:57:51but in the history of business was the St. Louis Spirits of the ABA when they did not
00:57:57get one of the expansion slots.
00:57:59They did not get to go to the NBA and they were really disappointed and all the other
00:58:02teams took cash compensation and they instead, they just wanted a piece of the television
00:58:08deal and in the 1976 in the NBA, a television deal was like 20 bucks a game, but they got
00:58:17an ex, they got a full share or a four sevenths share of television right money in perpetuity,
00:58:24which means the fancy way of saying forever you, you were Evan, you were acting like you
00:58:28don't know this story, go Google it.
00:58:31It's the greatest business deal, not in the history of sports, but in the history of business.
00:58:35And this ABA franchise made hundreds of millions of dollars over the years because they got
00:58:41a piece of the NBA.
00:58:43Tell me who's getting that money now.
00:58:44I think the NBA finally got out of it a few years ago, but for years and years and years,
00:58:51it just literally told all these other teams, the Virginia Squires and the Kentucky Colonels,
00:58:56they all went away and disappeared.
00:58:58And the owners of the Spirit, the St. Louis Spirit made, you know, hundreds of millions
00:59:04of dollars.
00:59:05Got a family for generations.
00:59:07One more on Horford.
00:59:08We've, we've never ever, believe it or not, had this conversation on this show.
00:59:12I'm curious your opinion of it.
00:59:13And then we should wrap because we've been going for a while.
00:59:16So Horford spent what, nine years with the Hawks, I think, to start his career and was
00:59:21obviously, you know, individually speaking, a better player.
00:59:26I mean, he was younger.
00:59:27He was, you know, in his prime.
00:59:29He was, you know, multiple time on the away team, by the way, that pushed the Celtics
00:59:32to game seven.
00:59:35I mean, it was for people that don't remember, I mean, we're all old enough to remember Al
00:59:39Horford signing with the Celtics was the, at the time, I mean, that was the biggest
00:59:43free agent the Celtics had ever signed.
00:59:45I mean, that was, that was significant.
00:59:49No disrespect intended to Dominique Wilkins because he was not the same player at that
00:59:52stage of his career.
00:59:54But anyway, nine years, I think it was with the Hawks.
00:59:56And this is now seven, I believe with the Celtics is Al Horford, you know, and obviously
01:00:04he's won more with Boston and may continue to win more with Boston.
01:00:08We hope is Al Horford when, when, when it's all done, when he goes into the hall, all
01:00:12that stuff.
01:00:13And I agree with you.
01:00:14There's, there's no debate because again, it is not the NBA hall of fame.
01:00:17It's the basketball hall of fame.
01:00:19What you did in college or Olympics or whatever else, it's all relevant.
01:00:22Is Al Horford remember is remembered as a Hawk or a Celtic?
01:00:25Oh, it's a Celtic.
01:00:26It's not, I don't think it's even close.
01:00:29And remember the relationship Al still gets booed when he goes there, not for what he
01:00:33did or didn't do there, but for leaving.
01:00:36So there there's, you know, it was not, and he was the best player on that team.
01:00:42And those were good teams, by the way, when you look at the history of the Atlanta Hawks,
01:00:45there's almost like these outlier teams.
01:00:47Remember they had that crazy long winning streak, uh, one year, I want to say around
01:00:512016.
01:00:52Didn't you win 60 games in Atlanta?
01:00:55Al was one of those guys.
01:00:57There are a lot of really great players in the Eastern conference of the 2010s that never
01:01:01got to the finals because LeBron took them all out.
01:01:03And Al was at the top of that top of that list.
01:01:06I think.
01:01:07And Kemba, who we talked about earlier, Kemba was a guy that like didn't win a game against
01:01:11LeBron James.
01:01:12He had one of those, we had one last night, by the way, uh, Pascal Siakam had lost 13
01:01:17or 14 in a row to the Celtics until that one last thing, crazy stat, because I know I'm
01:01:22the stat guy.
01:01:23I just love weird, innocuous, useless information.
01:01:27Pascal Siakam in his last 22 games against the Celtics is now three and 19, all three
01:01:33wins in overtime.
01:01:34Listen, you can't put 22 games in regulation, not even Dick Leip has that stat.
01:01:39Well, you know, I mean, what can I tell you?
01:01:42And I've lived through it.
01:01:43I stumbled on that one because last year Siakam was really good against the Celtics when he
01:01:48was on the floor and when he would leave the floor, Toronto would fall apart.
01:01:52So I was aware of those in those games.
01:01:54And then when he got traded to Indiana, it happened again.
01:01:56And he went through a year last year where he played nine games against the Celtics and
01:02:00he was dead.
01:02:01He is plus minus was even.
01:02:03And when he was off the floor, his teams were like a minus 50 and he went, oh, a nine against
01:02:09the Celtics last year because he played all four games for Toronto and then got traded
01:02:12to Indiana and played against them.
01:02:14So and then he had the great first half last night.
01:02:16They're up by 22 and then he couldn't make a shot.
01:02:19I was thinking I was just talking about during the game, like, what is what does he have
01:02:22to do to beat these guys?
01:02:23And then the 22 point lead disappears.
01:02:24And listen, you've got to find weird stuff in the course of 82 games to make it make
01:02:30it interesting.
01:02:31Celtics are definitely interesting off to a four and one start, despite that overtime
01:02:36loss at Indiana.
01:02:37Now, the back to back, not on a Monday, sadly, but games in Charlotte on a Friday and a Saturday
01:02:43road trip finishes out, fittingly enough, based on this conversation in Atlanta on Monday.
01:02:48And then it's back home for one of those national televised games at, you know, at the Garden
01:02:53against the Warriors.
01:02:55And we'll be buried.
01:02:56You buried the lead.
01:02:57I thought you were all excited about the fact I got Joe Mizzou to laugh last night.
01:03:00Yeah, we never brought this up.
01:03:02I can't believe we got with this.
01:03:03We should bring this up before we close out.
01:03:05Joe Mizzou.
01:03:06I don't want to say finally showing personality.
01:03:08That guy's been showing personality since that's all he does is show personality.
01:03:12I mean, he's we we affectionately refer to him on this show as as certified.
01:03:17I mean, a psychopath, but our psychopath.
01:03:20And we love him dearly.
01:03:21But yeah, you got him to to actually crack an audible smile, if you will, the other day
01:03:26left on the air.
01:03:27We're just going to run it as a as a loop.
01:03:29It was off the thing that happened the other night, which is the challenges, all those
01:03:34Which is an interesting issue, because fans got upset, right, because the Celtics challenged
01:03:38and won.
01:03:39Then they challenged again and won.
01:03:42And then you're out of challenges.
01:03:43And even though there was one later in the game with Holiday, I think Holiday shot hit
01:03:46the rim, but you're out of challenges, whatever.
01:03:48And somebody as I pass along the story of somebody being a lot of people reacting on
01:03:52Twitter and basically saying, what kind of what kind of ridiculous institution is there
01:03:56that where you can challenge and win, and then suddenly you're not allowed to challenge
01:04:00anymore.
01:04:02And so if I can get Joe to laugh at the truth, again, things you try to do over 82 games.
01:04:10We all talk about side quests and the Celtics need for side quests to make this year interesting.
01:04:16Broadcasters have side quests, too.
01:04:17And I knocked off a big one right there.
01:04:19Yes.
01:04:20I mean, yeah, he's got a little list check.
01:04:22It's a long season, kids.
01:04:23Yeah.
01:04:24Well, I mean, what's what's next for Joe?
01:04:25Is there something next on the Jomezula bucket list for you?
01:04:28I don't know.
01:04:29I find it that you've got to find interesting topics like, you know, you don't want to sit
01:04:36there every night and go, OK, Cunningham's averaging 30 points a game.
01:04:40He's really good, huh?
01:04:42Yeah, because I get it.
01:04:44This is not we're not trying to reinvent the wheel and you're not trying to rise to the
01:04:49every night he has to rise to the great Socratic challenge that is the pregame media gaggle.
01:04:55Right.
01:04:56So he has to do that and then he does a TV hit and whatever so that you're always trying
01:05:01to find interesting things.
01:05:02And that is a challenge when you're talking to the same guy.
01:05:05Remember, for 17 years, I had two guys.
01:05:09I had Brad and Doc 17 years when I remember saying that to him when we did our first one
01:05:15and his first game, that it had been since 2004, went from 2004 to 2021, you know, seventeen
01:05:23and a half years between anybody on the other end of that headset than Brad or Doc.
01:05:28You want to talk about three different personalities, too.
01:05:31And that's the again, that's sort of the challenge of it.
01:05:34And that's the interesting part of it.
01:05:36And, you know, the Brad thing, it wasn't until I became, you know, very friendly with Tracy,
01:05:41with Brad's wife, that I kind of was like tapping into that.
01:05:44You know, you just got to tap into the personality a little bit and make it something that people
01:05:47are going to listen to it where they know they might hear something at least a little
01:05:51bit different, which, you know, with Joe, I think you always know you're going to hear
01:05:54something.
01:05:55You know, listen, this is I've I've said this before, and this is no knock on Joe whatsoever.
01:06:00This is removing Joe entirely from the equation.
01:06:02My my biggest upset, although it's obviously a credit to the organization, my biggest upset
01:06:08about Brad leaving as coach and ascending into the role that he is in now is that we
01:06:13don't get to hear from him as often.
01:06:14I just always enjoyed listening to Brad.
01:06:17Always felt like I learned something.
01:06:18And I don't want to say that that, again, it's not like not the case with Joe.
01:06:22It's just a different thing.
01:06:23It's a different.
01:06:24We've got the DVD set of all of our pregame conversations with Brad.
01:06:27We'll turn that into a, you know, best of you have any thoughts on UFC coming, man.
01:06:33We get can we get Joe's thoughts on UFC 308?
01:06:36I it's it's interesting because obviously I've got, you know, I did MMA for a lot of
01:06:40years, but he's not.
01:06:43He's interested in everything, but he's not like a UFC fan per se.
01:06:47He likes to study it.
01:06:49The baseball thing was crazy that, you know, I was at the game with Fenway this year when
01:06:53the Celtics were honored, right?
01:06:55And they all sat in the box.
01:06:56And that was a game.
01:06:57The Red Sox had a huge comeback and happened.
01:07:00It started when the Blue Jays dropped.
01:07:02There was a foul ball, pop fly, foul ball, and it was dropped.
01:07:06And it's a baseball.
01:07:07If you're a baseball person, you know that that signals trouble, right?
01:07:10When you should.
01:07:11Let's say you're up five nothing in the World Series and you don't cover first and hypothetically
01:07:15hypothetical example, you know, as a baseball fan, you know, bad stuff is is coming.
01:07:21If that happens, we were on the air doing the game last night.
01:07:24I didn't even realize, you know, you see them coming back, but you're calling the games.
01:07:27You don't see the details.
01:07:28I couldn't believe it when I saw the Garrett goal play out there.
01:07:31Obviously, he pushes hard out and all that stuff.
01:07:32But, you know, bad things are happening.
01:07:34When that happened, Joe's on a baseball guy.
01:07:37He literally had his video guys clip that play and showed it to the team that saying
01:07:42that anything can go wrong if you don't do the fundamentals.
01:07:45And his so I think his brain is that's where I've had to learn.
01:07:48He's not a true heart.
01:07:49He's a hardcore baseball fan or hardcore hockey fan or whatever.
01:07:52But he has the brain that a lot of younger coaches have, which is that everything is
01:07:57an opportunity to learn and study and I can apply something that I see into my coaching
01:08:04like breathing exercises at the theater, like breathing exercises at the theater for Sean
01:08:09Grandy, the stat guy, the longtime voice of the Celtics, Evan Valente.
01:08:14I'm Adam Kaufman.
01:08:15Again, the Celts back to work with a back to back Friday and Saturday at Charlotte.
01:08:19Hopefully next time we're talking, because again, that's probably going to be after the
01:08:23Golden State game.
01:08:25I'd love to say four more wins.
01:08:26It's entirely possible.
01:08:28But even if we're sitting here with this team sitting at, you know, seven and two, I don't
01:08:32think anybody's going to be complaining, obviously.
01:08:35So well, somebody will.
01:08:38Yeah, we will.
01:08:39We'll talk about that.
01:08:40We won't be complaining.
01:08:41Thanks for tuning in.
01:08:42Everybody have a happy Halloween.
01:08:44Be safe out there.
01:08:45Eat lots of candy.
01:08:46Get a sugar high.
01:08:47Stay up late and enjoy your Celtics basketball tomorrow again for Sean, for Evan.
01:08:51I am Adam.
01:08:52We'll talk to you again soon.
